Longtime Springville resident Frank Memory will serve as grand marshal of the 2022 Art City Days Grand Parade on Saturday, June 11. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed down 400 South and Main Street.
Frank George Memory was born in Standardville, Utah, on July 29, 1923, to Franklin and Arlean Miner Memory. Frank’s mother, Arlean, died shortly after his younger brother’s birth, and Frank was raised by his father and stepmother, Christine Nelson Memory. Frank’s grandparents, Med and Ella Miner, lived on 400 South in Springville.
Frank graduated from Carbon High School, after which he joined the Navy and served in World War II. He first served on a minesweeper and then was transferred to a submarine, the USS Gato, for the balance of his enlistment. This submarine went on many harrowing and dangerous missions destroying enemy targets.
On one run, after two hours of dodging depth charges, the Gato surfaced and discovered a live depth charge on its deck. At the same time, two Japanese escorts were sighted heading toward it. The Gato outran the enemy escorts while disposing of the depth charge by setting it adrift on a rubber raft.
Frank was still on the Gato when it steamed into Tokyo Bay on Aug. 31, 1945. It remained there for Japan’s surrender ceremony on Sept. 2. Frank was honorably discharged on Dec. 29, 1945,
as a First-Class Quartermaster.
Frank returned home and married Eileen Brown. They made their first home in Springville. They later moved to two other locations in Springville, then near the mouth of Hobble Creek Canyon, and, finally, to 200 West, where Frank has lived ever since.
Frank first worked with Jeff Miner at Miner’s Garage after he took a car there for new spark plugs and Jeff offered to show him how to replace them. This started a wonderful life as an auto mechanic. He learned quickly and enjoyed working on cars and trucks. He worked for Jeff for many years in two locations.
He later started a new venture in a building on the corner of Main and 4th called Frank and Kelly (Jensen)’s Garage. Eventually, Frank bought the garage on Center Street from Bill Ruff. He enjoyed working there for several years and retired at this location. He gave his services many times for little or no charge to people in need.
Frank was involved in civics and the church during most of his life. He served on the city’s Planning Committee. He was also a Springville City councilman, during which time Springville City purchased the land where the Hobble Creek Golf Course would eventually be built. Frank helped organize the Springville Ambulance. He loved to help those in need.
Frank enjoyed serving in many positions in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Counselor, Bishop,
High Councilman and Counselor to the Branch President at the Missionary Training Center. However, his favorite calling was that of Scoutmaster. He took many young men on hikes in which they would be begging to stop while their 60-year-old Scoutmaster, Frank, wanted to keep going. Frank’s family and friends always called him the “Mountain Goat.” Frank has walked tens of thousands of miles during his lifetime.
Frank and Eileen enjoyed raising their five children in Springville: Von (Glenda), Sharon (Doug), Ann (Duane), Gary (Carla) and Richard (Sunnie). Frank has 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, and he still lives at home at the grand old age of 98.
Frank’s favorite saying is “Springville has been a good town to us. We have had many wonderful family and friends here.” He is very humbled and honored to be chosen as the 2022 Art City Day Parade Grand Marshal.
Local filmmaker Dean Duncan will be honored during the 2022 Art City Days celebration as Springville’s Resident Artist. He will be a featured part of the Art City Days Grand Parade on Saturday, June 11. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and travel down 400 South and Main Street.
Duncan is an associate professor of film in the Department of Theatre and Media Arts at Brigham Young University. He has served as director of the BYU Children’s Media Initiative and director of his department’s London Study Abroad Program.
He received his bachelor’s of fine arts degree in film production from BYU in 1987. His master’s degree in film criticism came from the University of Southern California in 1992. He earned his Ph.D. in 1999 from Glasgow University. He is especially interested and involved in documentary and children’s media.
He has produced many film projects, including “Fit for the Kingdom: Lives of the Latter-day Saints,” a series of films
telling the stories of ordinary people living their lives.
Duncan has made presentations about various aspects of film at conferences and workshops both nationally and internationally. In 2016, he curated and presented a film series at the Springville Museum of Art in conjunction with the museum’s exhibit of Soviet-era art. The series was titled “Kino: Russian Stories and Soviet Ideals in Film.”
He has written several books about filmmaking, including “Charms that Soothe: Classical Music and the Narrative Film,” a survey of the aesthetics of classical music in film; “Thinking About Film: A Critical Perspective,” a book for those who want to be more active, intelligent film viewers; and “Stories of Childhood: Evolving Portrayals in Books and Films,” which questions the widely held perception that books, as an artistic medium, are superior to and more respectable than film or television.
He has also authored many scholarly articles for various publications, in-
cluding BYU Studies and The Children’s Media Review.
Duncan and his wife, Sharon Anderson Duncan moved to Springville in 1992. They have raised six children here.

Longtime Springville residents Shirlene and Jim Jordan will be honored during the 2022 Art City Days celebration as Springville’s Citizens of the Year.
Jim Jordan is a third-generation Springville resident; he met and married Shirlene Curtis in 1976, and they started the fourth generation of Jordans born and raised in Springville.
Jim opened his flooring business, Custom Carpets, off 400 South in Springville in 1996. For 25 years, he has fulfilled flooring needs for residents in Springville and the surrounding area. He is an avid golfer and faithfully supports the chamber golf scholarship tournament event each year. Last year, Jim retired and closed the doors of Custom Carpets to enjoy more time on the golf course and with Shirlene and their family.
While Jim ran their store, Shirlene cared for their children and worked in several ventures leading up to her time as executive director of the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce. Shirlene was hired by the chamber in 2014 and took on the challenge of bringing new life to the organization.
With her hard work and love for Springville and the business community, she has grown the chamber into today’s thriving organization. She continued leading the chamber and serving the Springville and Mapleton communities until her retirement at the end of 2020. Even in retirement, Shirlene continues to serve the community and is always willing to help in any capacity, especially the chamber.
Reams Springville Market will be honored during the 2022 Art City Days celebration as Springville’s Business of the Year.
Reams Springville Market has been proudly serving this community for over 30 years. Reams Springville Market has been voted as the “Best Grocery Store” and having the “Best Customer Service” in the Daily Herald’s Best of Utah Valley competition for 10 years in a row. In other words, as its owners like to say: there are bigger stores, just not better ones.
The store attributes its three decades of successful operation in Springville to its friendly employees — some of whom have worked at Reams for more than 25 years — and its loyal customers who understand that “keepin’ it local” is what it’s all about.
Located at 759 E. 400 South, Reams opened in Springville in 1991 after purchasing a vacant building on the property. Dove’s and Village Market had operated there previously.
Locally owned and operated, the store has gone out of its way to treat its customers like family. Over the years, it has become a community hub of sorts, with people coming to grab a gallon of milk and staying to chat because they run into friends and neighbors.
In 2016, the store began planning a remodel of its interior, and maintaining a comfortable, “homey” atmosphere was an important consideration. Instead of the modern, sleek design that was popular at the time, Reams decided to go with a vintage and familiar design that feels nostalgic.
The Reams meat department has received individual accolades, having been named “Best Butcher” in the Best of Utah Valley contest for several years in a row. They cut, wrap, filet, chop and grind meats onsite. Whether a person is grilling, smoking, frying or “bacon,” they can help.
Making items by hand carries over into other departments such as the Reams deli, where customers can pick up wraps, dips, cheese balls, salads, meat and cheese platters and more, all made onsite.
They opened up a popcorn bar that boasts a family recipe of “Highly Addictive” and “Habit Forming” corn pops, can-
died colorful popcorn, and huge bags of buttery “Art City” theater-style popcorn.
Reams has one of the few scratch bakeries left in Utah Valley. Chaz and Carrie Hill have been baking at the store for more than 19 years, and customers can watch as their creations are mixed, kneaded, rolled and baked. More than 30 different flavors of fritters are on the list of possibilities.
In the produce section is the “Grab and Go Fresh” area where customers can find roast bowls, noodles, parfaits, fruit and veggie trays and fruit cups that are prepared fresh daily. Reams works with local suppliers to obtain the freshest produce. They also search the world for exotic and fun fruits and vegetables they believe their customers will enjoy.
Also in the produce department is the “DYI” orange juice machine that takes fresh oranges and makes the freshest juice possible while customers watch in amazement.
The pharmacy at Reams offers a convenient drive-up window and a
consultation room for vaccinations and one-on-one meetings with the pharmacists.
Reams recently added the “Balloon House,” a great addition for the one-stop shopping experience they are creating. Grab a balloon or order an arch; they have a great selection of all things to be filled with helium. Reams also offers fresh flowers, plants and seasonal bouquets as well as a unique gift and one-of-a-kind home decor section with ever-changing offerings under the famous pergola that everyone loves to browse around.
With a desire to give back to the community, Reams loves to support community events and groups such as local schools, PTAs, charities and more. Ream’s has been a community favorite for giving many their “first jobs.” They love training and teaching young employees customer service skills that will last them a lifetime, whether they stay with the store or not. Ream’s doesn’t only try to keep it local, they are local.
The 98th annual Spring Salon, an art exhibit showcasing the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art, is now open at the Springville Museum of Art.
The Spring Salon is one of the longest-running art shows in the state of Utah. It is a juried exhibition featuring pieces by Utah artists from many backgrounds. The pieces are created using a wide variety of mediums.
The salon will remain on exhibit through July 2 at the museum, located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays (except for special events).
For more information about the Spring Salon or other events and exhibits at the museum, visit smofa.org.
The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was begun by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original
artwork. The salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide.
The salon is open to all Utah artists working in any media. Each artist may submit up to two works of art created within the last three years. Works over three years old are not eligible.
Each year, hundreds of art works are submitted for consideration, with around 250 works accepted for display as part of the Salon.
The entrants to the exhibit come from many backgrounds. There are many professional artists who enter their art for consideration, but many others are amateurs. There is a wide variety of art mediums including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture, mixed media and assemblage sculpture, photography and digital media. Overall, the exhibit showcases the diversity and quality of contemporary Utah art.
One past tradition of the Spring Salon was the Penny Vote. Early in the history
of the show, contestants for Art Queen from the high school received votes through pennies that were cast into a box. The contestant with the most pennies was selected as the Art Queen and the money went toward new art purchases for the museum.
The community is invited to celebrate the cultures of Latin America during the ¡CelebrARTE! event to be held Saturday, June 4, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Spring Acres Arts Park, 700 S. 1300 East (just northeast of Springville High School), Springville.
Come play games, eat and watch music groups perform songs and dances from Latin American countries. Bring blankets or lawn chairs for comfortable seating on the grass.
¡CelebrARTE! is being held in conjunction with Art City Days and is being presented by Springville United.

As part of its 75th anniversary celebration, the Springville Playhouse will present the popular musical “Into the Woods” as its Art City Days production this year. Organized in 1947, the playhouse is Utah’s longest continuously running community theater.
“Into the Woods” will open on Friday, June 3, and performances will continue every Monday, Friday and Saturday through July 2.
The shows will be presented at Merit Preparatory Academy, 1440 W. Center, Springville, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission ($10 for students and seniors). Tickets are available at springvilleplayhouse.com or at the door.
The musical “Into the Woods” weaves several Brothers Grimm fairy tales together to tell a story of what happens after “happily ever after.” Audiences will see characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack of Jack and the beanstalk fame and Rapunzel brought into the story as a baker and his wife
embark on a journey to break a curse placed on them by a witch.
“Into the Woods” has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (“Company,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”) and a book by James Lapine (“Sunday in the
Park with George,” “Little Miss Sunshine”).
The Springville Playhouse production of “Into the Woods” is being directed by Robinne Booth. Cast members are: Craig Gardner, the Narrator/Mysterious Man; Cindy Thompson, the Witch; Dave Chapa, the Baker; Kristin Nielson, the Baker’s Wife; Hannah Spencer, Cinderella; Todd Christensen, Cinderella’s Prince/the Wolf; Tucker Smith, Jack; Autumn Walton/Jocelyn Ballard, Little Red; Connie Jackson, Jack’s Mother; Lauren Smith, Rapunzel; Adam DeFord, Rapunzel’s Prince; Tannie Hjorth, the Stepmother; Jennifer Spongberg, Florinda; Katie Davis, Lucinda; Joseph Grooms, the Steward; Karen Amsden, Granny/the Giant; and Karl Young, Cinderella’s Father.
A small group of Springville citizens gathered together in 1947 with a goal to promote and produce drama in their community.
The resulting organization, known as the Springville Playhouse, is now the longest continuously operating community theater group in Utah.
The group is celebrating is 75th anniversary this year and will be presenting the musical “Into the Woods” as part of Springville’s 2022 Art City Days celebration.
After presenting some small theatrical productions in Springville in 1947, the group offered its first full-length production, “An Ideal Husband,” in 1948. Originally known as the Springville Little Theater, the theater group changed its name to the Springville Playhouse in 1949.
Since its beginning, the group has produced many well-known and well-loved plays and musicals, including “Meet Me in St. Louis,” “Our Town,” “Exit the Body,” “Anything Goes,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” and “You Can’t Take It With You.” Currently, the playhouse presents up to four productions each year.
In addition to offering plays with adult casts, the playhouse has over the years had a strong children’s program, presenting plays for children that are cast with children, including “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” and “James and the Giant Peach.”
The playhouse has been on the cutting edge of theater as well, being the first community theater in Utah to present the musicals “Into the Woods,” “Crazy for You,” and “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical.”
One of the most unique aspects about the Springville Playhouse is that no one, from directors and cast members to costumers and sound and lighting technicians, is paid for their efforts. The hundreds of people who have participated in playhouse productions over the years have done so purely out of a love of theater and a desire to see it promoted in the community.
The Springville Playhouse, a nonprofit organization, is run by a board of direc-
tors. Funding comes mainly from ticket sales and government grants.
The Springville Playhouse has presented plays in many different locations over the years, including the Springville

It’s time to Rodeo!
The annual Art City Days Hometown Rodeo will return to the Springville Arena on Saturday, June 4. Mutton Busters will kick off the rodeo at 6:30 p.m. while the main dirt-stomping, heart-pounding events including Bull Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding, Barrel Racing and Team Roping will begin at 7 p.m.
Competitors of all ages are expected from all corners of Utah. Barrels and Team Roping will be offered in slack starting at 9 a.m.
Mutton Bustin’ is offered for children 8 years old and younger and a cash scramble will be offered for youth ages 9 to 13.
The Rodeo Committee is pleased to welcome Bert Davis, The Coppertown Clown, with his wacky sense of humor and wonderfully trained group of dogs to this year’s rodeo as its Specialty Act. His quick wit, award-winning comedy routines and ability to interact with a crowd offer up the promise of tear-rolling laughter for his Springville audience.
Returning to the arena this year are the hard-bucking bulls and horses of local stock contractor Rocking B Rodeos, owned by Mapleton native Brady Burningham, and Utah’s own announcer, the extremely knowledgeable Monroe Mangnuson, a Castle Dale native.
The Springville Arena is located at 767 W. 1600 South, Springville. Bleacher seated is limited, so audience members are invited to bring their own folding chairs. The arena gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets will be sold at the gate. Please no outside food or drink. Rodeo concessions will be offered by the Springville Rotary Club.
Admission will be $5 per person or $25 per carload. Cash is preferred. Please call Taelor Hansen at 385-4502261 for entry information. Event or arena questions can be directed to Kami Ashby at 801-360-5978. The rodeo is produced for Springville City and the 2022 Art City Days Celebration by the Hobble Creek Riding Club. The Hobble Creek Riding Club always welcomes new members.
How well do you know Springville?
Those who think they’re familiar with every aspect of this community may have a chance of winning an Amazon gift card through the Art City Days Eye Spy Photo Contest.
Photos will be posted online at www. springville.org/art-city-days/eye-spy on Monday, June 6, at 9 a.m. of 20 different locations or objects in Springville. The catch is that only a very small portion of the location, object or sign will be shown. It’s then your job to figure out where each picture was taken and then take a bigger picture of the location or object.
Once you have found all the locations and taken larger pictures of them, submit your answers to the Springville Recreation Office either in person or by email at artcitydays@springville.org. The recreation office is located at 443 S. 200 East.
Get your entry in quickly! The first individual or group to submit all the correct answers will win a $50 Amazon gift
card and a gift basket full of Springville Swag. In case of a tie, the person/group that submitted their entry first will be
declared the winner. Visit www.springville.org/art-city-days for more information.
Springville residents will be challenged to become super sleuths and use clues to find a special hidden item as part of the Art City Days Medallion Treasure Hunt.
Each day from Monday, June 6, through Thursday, June 9, at 9 a.m., a single clue will be revealed at www. springville.org/art-city-days/medallion that will lead searchers to a special Springville medallion hidden somewhere in the community.
Each clue will be somewhat cryptic, so it will require deductive thinking to put each part together and find the medallion.
In past years, the medallion has been found out in the open, but it also has been found inside a public building. There will be a message on the medallion giving specific instructions to the person or group that finds it, which could result in winning valuable prizes including a $50 Amazon gift card and a gift basket full of Springville Swag.
After the four days of clues, a final
clue may be released on Friday, June 10, if the medallion hasn’t been found by then.
Only one person will know where the medallion is hidden, so peppering city employees with questions will do you no good. Be very specific in your search as you get closer to finding the medallion, but, most of all, have fun!
All are invited to enjoy the animated feature “Encanto” (2021) as it is screened outside in the Spring Acres Arts Park during the 2022 Art City Days celebration.
The movie will be shown on Monday, June 6, beginning at dusk (around 9 p.m.) at the park, located at 700 S. 1300 East, Springville (just northeast of Springville High School). Admission is free.
Seating is general admission. Those attending should bring blankets and/ or lawn chairs to set up on the grass and enjoy the movie under the stars. The park gates will open at 7 p.m. Bring your own picnic snacks or enjoy concessions provided by local food trucks.
Anyone causing a distraction or disturbance will be required to leave. For the safety and enjoyment of everyone, no alcoholic beverages or dogs will be allowed.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical
house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal — every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz).
But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger,
Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope.
This will be the first of the Movies in the Park series to be held at the Arts Park during the summer of 2022. Admission to all movies is free. For more information, visit springville.org/recreation/special-events/movies-in-the-park/.
