Deaths Bobby Caldwell
Funeral services for Marvin Harold “Bobby” Caldwell, 88, of Corinth, are set for 2 p.m. today at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with burial in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Caldwell died Thursday, November 15 at his home following a lengthy illness and with his family by his side. Born July 18, 1924, he was a contractor and land developer for 50 Caldwell plus years and a member of the Carpenter’s Local. In addition he was a 36-year member of the Alcorn County School Board, former member of the Lions Club, a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shriners and Eastern Star. Mr. Marvin Harold “Bobby” Caldwell was awarded a certificate of appreciation of effective service from the United States of America War Department Army Service Forces-Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District dated August 6, 1945 and signed by the Secretary of War in Washington, D.C. for participation in work essential to the production of the atomic bomb thereby contributing to the successful conclusion of World War II, He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. Funeral services for Mershell Keeton, 53, of Corinth, are set for noon Tuesday, November 19, 2012 City Road Temple CME with burial in Forrest Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Keeton died Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Born January 15, 1959, she was a cook. He was a Corinth High School graduate and member of
City Road Temple. She was preceded in death by her father, J o e Keeton; a sister, Peggy Keeton; f o u r grandp a r Keeton ents; and one grandchild. Survivors include two children, Monique Keeton and Bacarra Hill; her mother, Johnnie Bell Keeton; seven siblings; and 15 grandchildren. Rev. Robert Fields will officiate. Visitation is 5:30-7 p.m. Monday at Patterson Memorial Chapel.

Willie E. Sherer
GUNTOWN — Funeral services for Willie E. “Bubba” Sherer, 82, are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Ebenezer M.B. Church with burial in Bethel Cemetery. Mr. Sherer died Monday, November 12, 2012 at the Magnolia Regional Health Center. Born April 4, 1930 to the late Roosevelt and Willie Mae Sherer, he attended school in Guntown where he was active in sports. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as gardening and rock collecting. He was a member of Ebenezer M.B. Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Leroy Sherer. SA

Funeral services for Ida Mae Simmons Poindexter, 86, of Corinth, are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Corinthian Funeral Home with burial in Valley of the Dogwood. Mrs. Poindexter died Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. Born July 17, 1926, she was a member of Fraley’s Chapel Church of Christ. She liked gardening, her flowers and taking care of her yard. Survivors include two sons, David Lee Poindexter (Joan Lamb), and Tim Poindexter (Pattie Whitehurst) all of Corinth; a sister-in-law, Clydene Simmons of Corinth; grandchildren, Nikki Poindexter Lambert (Kevin) of Corinth, Emily Poindexter Ferguson (Curtis) of Guthrie, Ok., and William Cody Poindexter of Corinth; one great grandchild; and a host of friends and neighbors from the Kendrick Community. A gathering to celebrate the life of Ann Jennings Whitfield is set for 1 p.m. today at First Baptist Church–Corinth with Bro. Dennis Smith officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park. Mrs. Whitfield died Thursday, November 15, 2012 at Whitfield Nursing Home following a lengthy illness. She was born in St. Louis, Mo. on April 25, 1932 to the late Jack and Eleanor Jones Jennings. She moved to Corinth as a child and graduated from Corinth High School. She then furthered her education at Judson College in Marion, Ala. where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She was the publicity director and instructor of English there at the college. Following that, she performed a graduate study in journalism and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Mississippi. She was also a co-owner of Whitfield Nursing Home. She was a passionate supporter of animal rights. She served on the board of the Corinth-Alcorn Animal Shelter, and provided funding for the building and furnishings of the visiting room that has been named in her honor. She has been an active mem-

She has served as president of the Little Garden Club of Corinth, Shakespeare Club, Corinth Music Club, and the Twentieth Century Club. She was also the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of Corinth Theatre Arts, a recipient of Whitfield four Magnolia “Maggie” Awards, and the recipient of one of the Rotary’s highest honors -a Paul Harris Fellow. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Maury Whitfield. Her survivors include her daughter, Jennie Whitfield Hibbard and husband Jack; one granddaughter, Jacqueline Hibbard; one brother-in-law, Winston Whitfield and wife Genida; a niece, Lynda Whitfield; two nephews, Whit and Benjamin Whitfield; a cousin, Margaret Huntley; and special friends, Jimmy Deaton and the staff of Whitfield Nursing Home. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church. McPeters Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.
