Answer the Call – Obey Gospel A man who admittedly drinks intoxicants and gambles was told by a preacher that if he were involved in a car wreck and fatally injured he would be saved if he called on the Lord while he was dying. Such fake teaching encourages people to continue living in sin, and plainly contradicts the teaching of the inspired Apostle Paul, who, concerning the second coming of Christ and what will occur, said, “Taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of or Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of His power.” –2 Thes. 1:8-9. However, we are aware of the fact that those who do not understand the plan of salvation nor the proper division of the Word, might read some passages, which, isolated from others, would leave the impression that all the sinners need to do to be saved is to pray. We note a text that is often used. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” – Acts 2:21. This text is a quotation from the prophecy of Joel Chapter 2:32. The quotation is found in the first sermon preached under the great commission of our Lord. Neither the prophecy of Joel nor the quotation in Peter’s sermon has reference to prayer. In the prophecy: 1st. Joel said, “it shall come to pass in the last days...” The last days or the last age began on the day Peter preached the sermon including the quotation. The Christian age, the one in which you and I live, is the last age. After this comes the final judgement. Peter said, “This is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel... The prophecy was fulfilled beginning that day. 2nd. Joel said that God said, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh...” This refers to the baptism of the Spirit received by the apostle on that Pentecost, and later by the Gentile, Cornelius and his household – thus upon all flesh, Jew and Gentile. 3rd Joel prophesied that the sun would be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and notable day of the Lord should come. This refers to the darkness that shrouded the earth from the sixth to ninth hour when Jesus died upon the cross of calvary. The salvation prophesied by Joel did not began during the personal ministry of Christ, but after the darkness that followed His death and ascension. 4th Joel prophesied whosoever should call upon the name of the Lord would be delivered or saved. Deliverance or salvation would began in Jerusalem. Jesus said, “Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name, among all nations, beginning of Jerusalem.” –Luke 24:47. We call upon Him when we obey His commands. Acts 2:14-17
