Sounds from the rooftop, my eyes opened wide. And as I sat wondering, not making a sound, Down the chimney he came with a grunt and a bound. He was in a red suit, with white trim and a sack. I looked at my glass, and then I looked back. He had a full tool set and a quick, lively pace. And a patient expression on his chubby red face. His eyes gave a twinkle as he smiled at my trouble. And his hands moved quickly, one two three on the double. He had two screwdrivers, some wrenches and pliers, Sanders and chisels and hammers and wires. He spoke not a word,

but went straight to work. He did this without making me feel like a jerk. He looked at those toys all in disarray. His attention was focused, he had nothing to say. He grasped the instructions which made no sense to me, And read them as quickly as A, B and C. In his hands the toy parts all fell into place. A look of amazement fell over my face. He finished, then winked, with a sly kind of smile. And squeezed up the chimney in fat puppy style.
I never understood, considering his size, How he fit through that chimney on his way to the sky. Nor did he reveal what he did later on, Once he stepped from my chimney and departed my home. And I still am not sure what I witnessed that night, If my mind was addled by whiskey or fright. But I knew I was grateful for what he had done, Before those quick footsteps that come with dawn.
