Big storm dumps snow on East Coast PHILADELPHIA — A plodding storm that dumped heavy snow on the unsuspecting MidAtlantic region left roads slippery and slushy in the Northeast for Monday’s commute while travel disruptions continued rippling across the country days after the same system first began wreaking havoc in the skies. The storm that coated parts of Texas in ice struck with unexpected force Sunday on the East Coast, blanketing some spots in a foot of snow, grinding highways to a halt, causing power outages, and closing schools or delaying start times. The federal government was allowing workers to arrive up to two hours later than normal Monday or take unscheduled leave as freezing rain fell. In Washington, cab driver Mahdi Abdi said he had been driving since around midnight and the main roads were clear. But side streets were a different story. “The small streets, a lot of them are icy,” said Abdi, 52. “I don’t even go in.” The storm canceled more than 2,800 flights Sunday and delayed thousands more, according to estimates from the website Flightaware.com. More than 1,200 flights Monday were already canceled, the greatest share from Dallas/ Fort Worth International Airport, which was still reeling from the effects of the ice storm that brought North Texas to a standstill. The forecast for Monday remained up in the air for the Northeast, depending on how quickly the system moves and temperatures rise, according to the National Weather Service. The expectation overnight was for another weather system moving out of Virginia to follow the same path as Sunday’s storm. It was forecast to dump icy drizzle and eventually freezing rain through the New York City area and into Boston, National Weather Service meteorologist
Greg Heavener said.
Obama heads to Mandela memorial WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama headed to South Africa on Monday to speak at a national memorial service for anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. He was joined on Air Force One by former President George W. Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Obama and his wife, Michelle, boarded the plane under cold, rainy skies for the long flight. Bush and his wife, Laura, and Clinton, already were on board. Former President Bill Clinton was traveling separately from Rio de Janeiro, where he was attending a Clinton Global Initiative event. Former President Jimmy Carter also planned to join the group in Johannesburg. George H.W. Bush is the only living president who will not attend. His spokesman said the 89-year-old no longer is able to travel long distances. The American leaders will join dozens of other dignitaries and tens of thousands of mourners at the memorial service at a Johannesburg stadium. Mandela will be buried Dec. 15, after a state funeral in his hometown of Qunu. Obama is to be one of the speakers at Tuesday’s memorial. White House officials said Obama was hoping to meet with Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel, and pay respects to the extended Mandela family. Also traveling with Obama on Air Force One were Attorney General Eric Holder and Susan Rice, Obama’s national security adviser.
Ex-San Diego mayor receives sentence SAN DIEGO — Bob Filner was sentenced Monday to three months of home confinement and three years of probation for harassing women while he was mayor of San Diego, completing the fall of the former 10-term congressman who barely a year ago achieved his long dream of being elected leader
of the nation’s eighthlargest city. Filner, who resigned amid widespread allegations of sexual harassment, pleaded guilty in October to one felony and two misdemeanors for placing a woman in a headlock, kissing another woman and grabbing the buttocks of a third. Superior Court Judge Robert Trentacosta’s sentence was the same as what prosecutors recommended in a plea agreement with Filner. The 71-year-old former mayor faced a maximum penalty of three years in prison for the felony and one year in jail for each misdemeanor. Filner apologized to victims and told the judge that he would work to earn back the trust of those he betrayed and recover his integrity — a sharp contrast to his defiant resignation speech nearly four months ago in which he said he was the victim of “a lynch mob.” Filner cannot seek or hold elected office while on probation and will be monitored by GPS during his home confinement, which begins Jan. 1. Exceptions to home confinement include medical, mental health and therapy appointments as well as travel to religious services.
committed, he said the heavy damage done to the alleged victim’s testimony made it difficult “if not impossible” to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
New airline emerges as deal closes FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines emerged from bankruptcy protection and US Airways culminated its long pursuit of a merger partner as the two completed their deal Monday to create the world’s biggest airline. It’s the latest in a series of mergers that will leave four airlines controlling more than 80 percent of the U.S. airtravel market. With less competition, the airlines have successfully limited the number of seats, boosting prices and returning to profitability. American’s old parent, AMR Corp., is gone, replaced by the new American Airlines Group Inc. CEO Doug Parker remotely rang the opening bell of the Nasdaq Stock Market, flanked on stage by executives and labor leaders of both airlines and in front of a crowd of cheering employees. For passengers, the merger won’t mean many immediate changes. Whether the deal leads
to higher ticket prices, the issue at the heart of legal challenges from the government and consumer groups, remains to be seen. Parker dismissed the notion that fewer airlines will lead to higher airfares because, he said, the new American plans to keep all the service currently offered by American and US Airways. Elite members of the two frequent-flier programs will get reciprocal benefits in early January, with other changes being phased in, executives said. The airlines expect to soon be able to book passengers on each other’s flights, increasing the destinations available to customers of both. It will take about two years to combine American’s fleet and workforce with those of US Airways, Parker said. US Airways will join Continental, Northwest and other airlines that now exist only in the memories of employees and longtime travelers.
Invasive cockroach can take the cold NEW YORK — The High Line, a park that turned a dilapidated stretch of elevated railway on Manhattan’s West Side into one of New York’s newest tourist attractions,
may have brought a different kind of visitor: a cockroach that can withstand harsh winter cold and never seen before in the U.S. Rutgers University insect biologists Jessica Ware and Dominic Evangelista said the species Periplaneta japonica is well documented in Asia but was never confirmed in the United States until now. The scientists, whose findings were published in the Journal of Economic Entomology, say it is too soon to predict the impact but that there is probably little cause for concern. That competition, Ware said, will likely keep the population low, “because more time and energy spent competing means less time and energy to devote to reproduction.” Michael Scharf, a professor of urban entomology at Purdue University, said the discovery is something to monitor. The newcomer was first spotted in New York in 2012, by an exterminator working on the High Line. The scientists suspect the little critter was likely a stowaway in the soil of ornamental plants used to adorn the park. “Many nurseries in the United States have some native plants and some imported plants,” Ware said.
Naval academy chief discusses assault ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The U.S. Naval Academy superintendent says he decided to court-martial two midshipmen in a sexual assault case because he wanted to make sure the charges were examined in great detail. Vice Adm. Michael Miller said Monday he believes a court-martial was the only way to determine whether an offense was committed by either student. Miller made the decision for Midshipman Eric Graham on a charge of abusive sexual contact and Midshipman Joshua Tate on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a woman midshipman. A military judge had recommended the cases not move forward. While the investigating officer found reasonable grounds to believe offenses may have been

Read And Follow There are thousands of religious groups in our world today. It is obvious that the Bible - Word of God - is not followed or even read. What a shame. Jesus prayed for man to be united with Him. The bible - “How can two walk together, except they be agreed”, Amos 3:3. Many honest people are looking and searching for the Lord’s Way. They want to know the truth, they want to please God, they want to go to heaven. The Bible, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.” John 17:17. It is our purpose to point man to the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world. man must be willing to hear the Lamb - man must be willing to believe the Lamb - man must obey the Lamb of God. Many sin now as they did in the first century. The Bible - “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23. Man needs salvation now as they did in the first century. The Bible - “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” Acts 4:12. Mans obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ will save one now as it did in the first century. The Bible - “...the gospel of Christ is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” Rom. 1:16. The gospel reveals a keen insight into the needs of people of all ages. Therefore, the gospel must be taught to all mankind. The Bible “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15. There is a need in Alcorn County, as in other parts of the world. When the church come together at Northside, the good news of Christ is taught. We are putting forth a special effort we desire all people to come to a knowledge - understanding - of the word of God. Paul preached the gospel in many parts of the world. Some rejected the word - others accepted the word. The same is true today. Some search the scriptures, “These - those of Berea were more noble than those in Thessalonia, in that received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether these things were so”. - Acts 17:11. Thus they learned the Lord’s way. We encourage people to do the same today. Read Acts 16.
