Corinth police charged two men in connection with a Saturday night drive-by shooting in the city. Isaiah Moreno, 18, of Wood Street, Corinth, is charged with drive-by shooting, and Deondre Simmons, 19, of West Harris Circle, Corinth, is charged

Green said it appears that a prior disagreement among some individuals led to shots being fired in the area of Meigg Street and Martin Luther King Drive around 11:30 p.m. Officers were in the area responding to a prior shots fired call when they heard another volley of shots and spotted a car speeding away from the scene.

Officers stopped the car and found three handguns, 33 grams of marijuana, a small amount of crack cocaine and a quantity of methamphetamine inside the vehicle, said Green. Some people were outside in the vicinity of the gunfire, but no one was injured. Green said Please see SHOOTING | 2A

A juvenile is being charged as an adult following an armed robbery of an individual Sunday night. Lanard Chambers, 15, of Proper Street, Corinth, is charged with armed robbery and shooting into a dwelling. Bond was set at $40,000, and Chambers remained in custody at the county jail Tuesday afternoon. Corinth Police Department Detective Dell Green said officers responded to a shots fired call on Foote Street about 11:30 p.m. The victim, who was in the carport of his home at the time of the crime, told police he was approached by a male subject who demanded money. The victim told him he didn’t have any, and Green said the male subject then grabbed the victim’s necklace and yanked it off him. Green said Chambers then

ran from the scene, firing a shot which went into the house. Responding officers observed a black male running down the street and saw him throw a gun to the ground. In other crime news, Corinth police continue to seek leads in last week’s armed robbery at Buck’s on Highway 72. Green said the perpetrators of the Buck’s robbery are believed to be involved in an armed robbery of a convenience store the night before on Aug. 9 in Selmer, Tenn. Two men entered Buck’s on Aug. 10 about 11:30 p.m. One suspect is estimated to be a little more than 6 feet tall and the other a little under 6 feet tall. The man carrying the gun was dressed in black and appeared to have a blue shirt wrapped around his face. The other wore a black hoodie and gray pants and obscured his face with a white bandana.

Zaxby’s tackles attendance issue BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com

LZ is a chicken who isn’t afraid to help. Zaxby’s mascot and staff are doing their part to help high school football attendance. “Our hope is to increase the attendance of games so schools will benefit from additional ticket sales,” said Zaxby’s General Manager April Tucker. Zaxby’s is sponsoring a Punt, Kick and Pass contest. The first contest is Friday night during halftime of the Alcorn Central at Biggersville game. The local restaurant will also be at the Tupelo at Corinth meeting on August 28. “A contestant will start at one end zone and punt the ball,” said Tucker about the contest rules. “Wherever the punt lands, they will toss it and from that spot they will attempt a field goal.”

Any contestant who makes the field goal will be awarded $5,000, according to Tucker. “Sign-up for contestants will take place before the game through the first quarter,” added the general manager. A random name will be drawn to take part in the event. Certain eligibility requirements will be in place for participants. “Zaxby’s as a brand is very community driven and we definitely want to support our schools,” said Tucker. “Schools have stressed they are interested in keeping fans through halftime … we want to help them do that this year.” Zaxby’s will have a booth at both games. Employees will be handing out balloons, give-a-way items, telling people about their products and how they can help with fundraisers and community events.
