Today’s Highlight in History: On Aug. 5, 1966, the Beatles’ “Revolver” album was released in the United Kingdom on the Parlophone label; it was released in the United States three days later by Capitol Records. (Songs included “Eleanor Rigby” and “Yellow Submarine,” which were also issued as a double A-side single on Aug. 5 and 8.)
On this date: In 1864, during the Civil War, Union Adm. David G. Farragut led his fleet to victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama. In 1884, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal was laid on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor. In 1953, Operation Big Switch began as remaining prisoners taken during the Korean War were exchanged at Panmunjom. In 1962, actress Marilyn Monroe, 36, was found dead in her Los Angeles home; her death was ruled a probable suicide from “acute barbiturate poisoning.” South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela was arrested; it was the beginning of 27 years of imprisonment. In 1974, the White House released transcripts of subpoenaed tape recordings showing that President Richard Nixon and his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, had discussed a plan in June 1972 to use the CIA to thwart the FBI’s Watergate investigation; revelation of the tape sparked Nixon’s resignation. In 1986, it was revealed by Arts & Antiques magazine that artist Andrew Wyeth had, over a 15-year period, secretly created some 240 drawings and paintings of a woman named Helga Testorf, a neighbor in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Following the death, a 22-page letter detailing Traylor’s death was found at the Mississippi Veteran’s Museum in Laurel. Bishop was later arrested in Louisiana at a roadside checkpoint for driving with an expired license. Her sentence includes no possibility of parole and she is not eligible for any type of release.

Booneville Taxes will remain same for district BOONEVILLE — Prentiss County School District residents will see no increase in tax rates under a budget approved last week by district leaders. The school board voted last Thursday to approve a $22,429,876 budget that includes an increase in total revenue
of $621,191, primarily due to increases in state and federal funding. Funding generated from ad valorem taxes paid by district residents increases from $3,354,503 for the 2016 fiscal year to $3,394,421 for the new 2017 fiscal year. The largest spending increase in the budget is in payroll. Personnel expenses, including salaries and benefits, make up 87.88 percent of district spending. For the new fiscal year the payroll expenditure will rise by $187,661.35. The projected increase in tax revenues is due to a projected rise in the assessed value of property in the district. Under state law the school district makes a request to the board of supervisors for the setting of a millage rate sufficient to generate the amount of funds requested and the board then sets the rate. Residents will not see a tax rate increase because of a limit set by the state. The law caps the tax rate for school districts at 55 mills, the level currently levied by the district, so the tax rate for the district cannot be increased beyond the current level.
Tippah Co. Appeal dismissed in sex assault case TIPPAH COUNTY — The Mississippi Court of Appeals recently denied the appeal of a Tippah County man and affirmed his conviction and 35-year sentence for sexually assaulting his daughter. Jesse Lee Walker, 41, was convicted in December 2012 of gratification of lust and sexual battery for the assault of his 13-year-old daughter, who was a special education student. In his five-point appeal, Walker argued that the court should not have accepted his confession or declared the victim was of tender years. He also complained about the admission of photos showing the poor conditions of the property as well as jury instructions. In a unanimous opin-
ion, the court of appeals affirmed the conviction and sentence handed down by the Tippah County Circuit Court.
Tupelo Michaels acquires Hancock’s assets TUPELO — One of Hancock Fabrics’ former rivals is now the owner of the company’s intellectual property assets, according to The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. Michaels, based in Irving, Texas, received approval from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware to buy them for $1.325 million. IP assets include anything of value including the name, brands, trademarks, domain names and patents. It also includes customer information. Hancock filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February – it’s second time since 2007 – but later decided on liquidation. A June auction was conducted for the sale of Hancock’s IP assets, which included 22 trademarks, 50 domain names, financial information and about 10 million customer records, according to court records. A Consumer Privacy Ombudsman appointed to the case to advise on issues related to the protection of the privacy of Hancock customers’ personally identifiable information (or PII), said there is no loss of privacy as a result of the sale of the information.

Houston shootings put police on alert HOUSTON — Police are investigating a shooting in Houston for the third weekend in a row, and Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles said his department and his officers are on alert, reported the Chickasaw Journal. “People need to stop this,” said Voyles. “No one has been seriously hurt yet, but if this keeps up it’s only a matter of time.” The latest shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. A police officer walking to his car downtown heard shots fired north of town. The officer later pulled over a car with a wounded man inside and on his way to the hospital. Kelsey Conner, 24, was carried to Trace Regional Hospital, and an ambulance came and picked him up, according to Voyles. He was taken to Tupelo and released on Sunday. Voyles said Conner was shot twice in the side with what was believed to a .22-caliber rifle. Voyles said the incident occurred in the curve of North Starkville
Starkville MSU implements clear bag policy STARKVILLE — In an effort to enhance fan safety, Mississippi State will implement a new clear bag policy for the 2016 football season at Davis Wade Stadium. The policy, which takes effect for the Sept. 3 season-opener against South Alabama, is consistent with the NFL’s current model and being adopted by most Southeastern Conference schools this season, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee and South Carolina. Only clear tote bags that do not exceed 12” x 6”” x 12” or one-gallon plastic freezer bags will be allowed in Davis Wade Stadium. In addition, small handheld clutch purses no larger than 4.5” x 6.5” will be permitted. Spectators also will be able to carry other items allowed into the stadium such as binoculars, cameras, and smart phones, but their cases will not be permitted.
Nettleton Guard armory faces possible shutdown NETTLETON — A fixture of the small town of Nettleton may soon become empty. WTVA reported that Nettleton Mayor Mem Riley received a personal visit from Major General Augustus Collins of the Mississippi National Guard about a month ago. Collins explained that the Guard could not receive enough state dollars in order to keep the small facility open.

and concrete floors covered with feces and dry dog food. Within hours, the pictures had been shared hundreds of times and drew dozens of angry comments calling for better conditions for the animals. It seems the attention has done some good. According to Fulton officials, several changes have been made to both the kennels themselves and their maintenance schedule in the wake of that initial post. “We realize there’s a concern, and we’ve addressed it,” said Fulton Mayor Lynette Weatherford. “This is not going to happen again.” The dogs being kept at the kennel have new, metal water dishes that should be more resistant to algae growth and bowls that attach to the bars of the cages so the animals can’t knock them over.
