Duck Dynasty stars coming to Arena ... Jack BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Corinth is about to be happy, happy, happy. The Crossroads Arena has reached an agreement to bring two stars of A&E's reality series Duck Dynasty to the facility in September as part of the Alcorn
County Fair. Willie Robertson and his son, John Luke, will be part of “Kids and Family” day sponsored by the Arena and Alcorn County Fair. The two will be town Sept. 21 with pre-sale of tickets being July 8. The Robertsons have gained a cult since the series debuted
in March of 2012. A&E's mostwatched series features the West Monroe, La., family living the American dream while operating a thriving business and remaining true to their family values. Willie Robertson, the third son of Phil and Kay Robertson, is CEO of Duck Commander — a compa-
ny that makes products for duck hunters and was started by Phil in 1973. “We can't wait to bring Willie and John Luke to Corinth,” said Crossroads Arena General Manager Tammy Genovese. “This show will be something special for the Arena.”
Local child honored for nutritious recipe Associated Press
BOONEVILLE — A Booneville child is invited to dine at the White House after submitting a winning recipe for a nutritious lunch of Mississippi catfish. A news release from the office of first lady Michelle Obama says 10-year-old Reed Lindsey of Booneville is one of 54 winners in the “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.”
There was one winner from each state, the District of Columbia and three territories. Reed’s recipe was for panseared Mississippi catfish on a bed of river rice. All the winners are invited to a July 9 dinner that Mrs. Obama is hosting at the White House. The children will get a tour of the White House vegetable garden.

Club racing toward Family Fun Day BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
Members of the Boys & Girls Club are ready to go racing. The green flag is set to drop July 13 on the club’s Indy 500 Family Fun Day. Staff and members started putting together wooden go-karts to be used during the noon to 3 p.m. event this week. Five local teams – Red, Yellow, Purple, Pink and Gold – are set to take on teams from the Iuka Unit of the Boys & Girls Club. Each team will be made up of a crew of five. “We are going to paint them
and add decals,” said unit director Christy Grice. “Any sponsor that would like to have their decals put on a cart can let us know.” Lowe’s sponsored the project by providing the material. “We couldn’t have done this without the help of Lowe’s employee Terry Kono,” said the unit director. Grice said one of the carts will be named Terry because of his help in the project. The go-karts are not self-propelled and will need someone to push. The steering will be done by using the drivers feet to rotate the front axle.
“Everyone of the kids wants to be the driver,” said Grice with a laugh. Medallions and trophies will be distributed following the day of races. “People can bring their lawn chairs or tents and enjoy the day,” said Grice. Hot dogs and hamburgers along with icy treats are slated to be served. The fun day is part of the club’s “Vacation Adventure” summer camp. Vacation spots such as New York and Gatlinburg, Tenn. are being incorporated into the camp fun.
The mission and vision continue with the return. The Easom Outreach Foundation is celebrating the history of Easom High School and the schools that preceded it with “A Return to the Beginning” on July 4-6 at the school in South Corinth. “A lot of people who haven’t been in awhile are coming since an event is being centered around the school,” said Samuel Crayton, Jr., a 1966 Easom graduate and outreach foundation board chairman. “A Return to the Beginning” has numerous activities scheduled as past graduates come together to remember an honorable past, dedicated present and an impactful future. Crayton expects around 5,300 people to attend with half being from out of town. “We want them to enjoy a fun-filled weekend and just hang out at the school,” added the Easom graduate. Registration begins Thursday, July 4 from 4-7 p.m. at
Easom High School. Following registration, a sock hop is slated for 7 p.m. with a bonfire to follow. Cost of the sock hop is $5. A full day of activity is planned for Friday at the school. A city and museum tour will begin at the school at 11 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. “Buses will be used to take those wanting to tour downtown,” added Crayton. Several activities are slated for children all during the day. Easom grad Tommy Morrison will be conducting the Yellow Jacket Basketball Camp for youngsters July 4-6 in the gym, featuring the Princeton Offense. The camp is set for 8-11 a.m. each day. “It will help with the mindset needed to be a good athlete,” said Crayton. There will also be a fashion and talent show involving children from 1-3 p.m. Refreshments will be available during the day at no cost. A dinner and play are slated Please see EASOM | 3A
Alcorn welcome center holding coloring contest BY STEVE BEAVERS sbeavers@dailycorinthian.com
The Alcorn County Welcome Center is getting children involved in the community. All the youngsters need is some crayons. To promote it’s latest theme – “Fun Things for Kids to do in Mississippi” – the welcome center is having a coloring contest. An overall winner and three age-division winners will all receive a copy of local artist Tony Bullard’s Historic Corinth Coloring Book Volume I. “We thought this would be good to educate kids in the community on the history of
the state,” said Sherry Brown, welcome center supervisor. “It also helps promote the Crossroads Museum at the Historic Depot.” Those interested in entering can pick up a coloring sheet at the Alcorn County Welcome Center, Corinth Artist Guild Gallery or Crossroads Museum. The sheet – a page from the Volume I coloring book – is of the Historic Depot and must be done in crayon only. “This our way of getting the community more involved in what we do here,” added Brown. “Cane grows abundantly in the ravines, and by platting a few of them together with bark and placing something under the ends to raise them a few inches from the ground, quite a springy and comfortable bedstead is made, which is much better than lying on the ground, especially when the weather is wet.” — Union soldier at Vicksburg.
