Kossuth just a win away Aggies take a 1-0 lead in 3A finals BY DONICA PHIFER dphifer@dailycorinthian.com

PEARL — Kossuth played a close one. The Aggies locked up a Game 1 win over Sumrall in a 6-5 final, logging a four run sixth inning that looked to cinch the game. At least until an error got in the way. What had previously been a perfect game was snuffed out in the seventh inning, as Jacob Wilcher misjudged a fly ball into center field. The ball dropped - Sumrall scored its third run of the game, and the race was on. “The sun was bad at that

point,” Head Coach Daniel Threadgill said of Wilcher’s mishap, “It was behind the home stands and difficult to see. There wasn’t a mental error, it was just mother nature.” The Bobcats carried an early lead, scoring on the fourth batter of the game after Austin Watts, who logged the first hit of the day, stole second and third outright. Tyler Mercer, who threw for 6.3 innings, struck out the first two of his seven batters in the first while the Aggies held Sumrall to one run through the sixth. The Aggies took the lead in the third with lead-off hitter Blake Cain charting a double. Wilcher followed Cain’s hit with a stand-up double, earned from an error in left

field while Josh Whitaker gained a single RBI on Cain’s run. Matthew Woodruff’s strike out didn’t matter, as Wilcher and Whitaker timed a double-steal of second and homeplate for the 2-1 advantage. The Bobcats put in three and out showings in the fourth and fifth, while the Aggies fell in the fifth on a double play to send the game to the sixth. Stephen Newell provided the tying run for the Bobcats, batting in Alex Knight for a 2-2 game. Then Woodruff smashed a double into left field, and the game busted open for the Aggies. “We were able to get to their pitcher a little bit,” Threadgill said, “We saw him for five

innings and I knew it was a matter of time before we got some hits. Once those came, we tacked on a few runs.” Kossuth put nine batters in the box in the inning, with all but two reaching first base as Sumrall logged three errors. Connar Boyer’s hit brought Woodruff home, with Chase Peterson’s hit catching him out at first but allowing Charlie Bonee to score a fifth run. Bonee also logged his second base steal of the year, running for third as Boyer slid home. With a walk of Cain, runners sat on the corners for the third time in the inning as Wilcher hit into left field to send Reed Mitchell in for the final run. Please see KOSSUTH | 12A
