CHOOSE BIBLICAL VALUES “Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17). John warns us about the danger of thinking the world is special or offers something of value. The world and its lusts will not endure since it is not from God. A brief glimpse at the realities of life prove this. While on television adultery is common and quickly forgotten, in real life it is full of pain, rejection, betrayal and a loss of trust. It is never quickly forgotten. While on television premarital sex is the norm, in real life it leads to unwanted pregnancies, painful decisions and even sexually transmitted diseases. While on television a little lie seldom does harm, in real life dishonesty can kill relationships. Clearly, these are “values” God does not want His children to adopt. But God did not ask us to leave the world. In fact, Jesus required just the opposite. “I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth. As Thou didst send Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world” (John 17:15-18). We are left in the world on purpose. Our task is to shine as lights in a dark and evil world. “That you may prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life” (Phil. 2:15-16). We cannot shine in a dark world if we are not in that world We have been left in the world as a way of leading people of the world away from sin and back to God. This requires some careful discernment. For some of us, it means we know what is going on around us, in spite of the evil it portrays, such as television or movies or music. For others, it is avoiding these things to stand apart. The most important part of all this to me is Jesus’ message, “Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth” (John 17:17). The way to be in the world without becoming worldly is to stand decisively and resolutely on God’s truth. That truth will keep us from being led into evil. That truth will let us know right and wrong in all circumstances. It is the truth that will set us apart, while leaving us to live in the world. Read Your Bible- Welcome.

CALENDAR CONTINUED FROM 1

Teacher performance incentives, differentiated diplomas, a modified accountability system, early college courses and career technical offerings are among the other changes the district is considering as part of its Forward First initiative. In addition to approving the calendar, the board authorized the superintendent to develop the new policies and procedures to bring to the board. “When you are approved as a district of innovation,” said Superintendent Lee Childress,

“the law allows you to maintain that designation for five years because it is understood that it will take time to move through this and hopefully perfect it where it will be a system that works.” He sees excitement among teachers and administrators for the changes to come. “I think we’ve got an opportunity to make a difference,” said Childress. “I think once we get into it, while it’s a change, I think everybody will like it. We’ll have some growing pains, but we’ll work through those.” Many of the changes

can be done at no cost, he said. The 2016-2017 calendar will move to a nineweeks grading period rather than six weeks and will have a long fall break in October and a spring break in March. The two breaks will become the time for remediation efforts rather than at the end of the school year. The extended-year program will continue as normal for this school year, however. The calendar opens the year on Aug. 1 and concludes on June 15. No snow days are built into the calendar, and any days missed for weather will likely be made up during the spring break. With the modified accountability system, the district will begin to use the Cambridge exams for the high school exit testing rather than the English II, Biology, U.S. History and Algebra I exams. “However, our students will still have to take those exams,” said Childress. Also, “We’re still going to have to administer the Mississippi Assessment Program exams. The reason for that is it’s a federal requirement.” The focus on Cambridge will help the district to deepen student learning “rather than trying to race from one end of the textbook to the other and cover a large
