Welcome to START 2017

Each summer, every student new to Oregon State University attends a START session to prepare them for their first year at OSU. Incoming freshmen will be led by START leaders, who will help with check-in, lead small groups of students in team-building activities and teach the incoming students how to be successful at OSU. Incoming freshmen are not the only new students to attend START sessions.

Four transfer START sessions will be held throughout the summer for students transferring from a different university to OSU. These students will be led by Transfer Ambassadors, peer leaders who are transfer students themselves.

Family Ambassadors are a new addition to START 2017. These students have served as START leaders in the past and will assist in supporting families at the first 10 freshman START sessions. These ambassadors

According to Natalie Rooney, OSU orientation coordinator, each student-staff member assists in making each START session welcoming to new students.

“These students really are a great representation of Oregon State University, and they do an amazing job of creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all students and families who come to START throughout the summer,” Rooney said.

Included in this issue are short bios of each student-staff member.

“All of our student-staff members are incredible students here at Oregon State,” Rooney said. “They represent many different backgrounds, are involved in a wide variety of organizations and activities here at OSU and they come from all corners of campus.”

OSU offers resources for students to maintain overall wellness

CAPS, SHS provide services for mental, physical, other types of health

By Delaney Shea, News Contributor You’re sitting in your residence hall, maybe peoplewatching or browsing Netflix. The trees outside your window rustle faintly in the breeze. You’re a brandnew college first-year and it’s the first week of school.

Everything should be great, and you should feel great, right? College is supposed to be the best four (or five, or six) years of your life. Yet, people hardly ever talk about how hard it can be at first.

Staying healthy and as stress-free as possible in college, especially on a large campus like Oregon State University, can seem confusing and overwhelming.

However, there is a wide web of support for first-years and beyond on campus that isn’t necessarily apparent at first, with numerous professionals who want to help.

“We are here to serve (the students). We are very experienced in caring for students away from home for the first time and feeling overwhelmed about getting help,”said Kathi Carley, the administrative coordinator and assistant to the director at Student Health Services, via email.

Staying mentally well

Makenzie Atwood, a first-year majoring in psychology, lives with an anxiety disorder and was nervous about transitioning to college. She wishes that people would talk more about what adjusting to college is really like.

Atwood recalls the time she first opened up to her Sackett Hall hallmates about her anxiety and the difficulties she experienced settling into OSU. “Almost everyone there was like ‘Oh my gosh, me too, I cried all the time in my room,’” Atwood said. “No one ever tells you it takes a few weeks (to adjust).”

Although Atwood experienced a tough transition to OSU, activities that she discovered helped her stay calm and acclimate to her new home.

“Maybe this is cliche, but try to get yourself to talk to people, because realizing that the people around you… even if they’re not going to open up to you about what they’re going through, just realizing that you’re not alone there in general, that there’s other people there and it’s still new to them also is helpful,” Atwood said.

In addition to reaching out to others, Atwood found familiarizing herself with campus helpful.

This isn’t to say that college will be miserable for weeks on end, or that students should be afraid of this massive life change. Friendships will form, people will find clubs or jobs they love and campus will start to seem like home. It just takes some time, according to Atwood.

“The people that I walked in and first saw (in my hall), I was like,‘These are strangers, they are all doing so good and I’m not,’”Atwood said.“It was a negative thing to be around people, because I was comparing myself and thinking they were fine and I wasn’t. But they are like my best friends now, it’s like a family, honestly. And it’s people who, if something was wrong now, I could go talk to. It’s the same people I was trying to hide any sort of weakness or concern from before are the people that I go to (now) when I have a bad day.”

Another resource Atwood has utilized in the past is Counseling and Psychological Services, located on the fifth floor of Snell Hall. It offers individual, couple and group counseling, as well as a Mind Spa with a mas

Finding a home away from home Oregon State University offers incoming students many organizations, communities to get involved in, build experiences

For students just arriving at Oregon State University, figuring out how to spend your time outside of the classroom can be difficult. However, regardless of what students are interested in, they can find their homes on campus within various student-run organizations, clubs and programs.

At OSU, students have a wide range of options for getting involved around campus. These include, but are not limited to, Student Leadership and Involvement, OSU Program Council, the Associated Students of OSU, intramural sports and sport clubs, Diversity and Cultural Engagement and Greek life.

“Typically when you come from any place that is off campus to on campus, this is a different environment,” said Damoni Wright, the executive director of SLI. “It’s just a very different place and we want to make sure that people are connected or begin to find some level of community, whether that be one person or whether that be a group or a student organization or people from a class and a lab. Whatever it is, we want to make sure that that happens as soon and as often as we possibly can.”

Student Leadership and Involvement

SLI encompasses many organizations on the OSU campus. Getting involved is a way students can become engaged while also enhancing their co-curricular experience while attending university, according to Wright.

“Getting students involved means it’s not just about having fun while you’re here, although that’s a huge part of it,” Wright said. “It’s about connecting with people, having fun, building community, getting people excited about these learning experiences that hopefully are not all the same, that are very different. We need people that are different from you, learning from each other. That means (staff ) learning from students as well.”

According to Wright, getting involved on campus can also benefit students’ educational and social experience in college.

“We know that research shows that students that are more involved, they have more of a chance of having a more satisfying college experience, typically having higher GPAs and typically us retaining them until they persist, meaning until they graduate,” Wright said. “So

the more they are involved, the more all of those elements increase.”

Within SLI, students can get involved in academic and professional organizations, honor societies, volunteer and philanthropic groups and many others.

Students can also become involved with OSUPC, a student-led organization that plans and produces events for OSU students and community, such as Dam Jam and Fall and Spring Family Weekends.

“We’re planning events that we think students really want because we are students, so we can pull that information from our own heads,” said Phoebe Chin, the marketing and social media coordinator at OSUPC and a fourth-year studying graphic design.

According to Philip Harman, a special-events coordinator with OSUPC and a junior studying industrial engineering, working at OSUPC is a fun experience because of the various opportunities to collaborate with students and other organizations and offices around campus. “(We’re) just creating positive things for students to be a part of and create memories and have fun while we’re doing this whole college thing,” Harman said.

Associated Students of Oregon State University

Another way students can get involved at OSU is through ASOSU, the student-led body of government on campus.

“We are the recognized organization on campus by the state of Oregon to be the entity that will funnel student voices up to the administration and external to the university as well,” said Rachel Grisham, the 2016-17 ASOSU president.

“We’re recognized as really the only people that can speak on behalf of the entire student body.”

Students are able to become a part of ASOSU through their executive, legislative and judicial branches, according to Grisham. Other aspects of ASOSU that students can get involved with include SafeRide, the Office of Advocacy and various volunteering events both on and off the OSU campus.

“We’re always trying to cover all facets of student life that have any problems or issues, so no matter what your interest area is, if there’s something on campus that you’re passionate about, we’ll probably have a space for you to do that in a way that will impact students positively,” Grisham said. “Whether you’re passionate about the environment, or you’re passionate about health and wellness, if you’re passionate about issues that international students face, we have positions dedicated, with committees, that support those positions to actually ANDREA MITEV | ORANGE MEDIA NETWORK address those issues.”

“A lot of things that have been changed on this campus have come from first-year students that see a problem on this campus and they want to make a change. And it happens,” Grisham said.

Intramural sports and sport clubs

For a more physically-active form of involvement, students can also participate in recreational sports through intramural sports or sport clubs.

According to Sam Rodenberg, the sports program coordinator with recreational sports, opportunities for all individuals to get involved are available to students, regardless of their athletic backgrounds.

“For those individuals who are passionate about a sport and are maybe not involved at that higher level within athletics, they can come to our department and be involved with something that creates community, friendships, for them to have fun and be active,” Rodenberg said.

In intramural sports, according Rodenberg, there are two different leagues: the ‘A league’ and the ‘B league.’ The league a student chooses is dependent upon whether they want to play a sport competitively or recreationally.

“The thing that I really like about the different leagues that we offer is like ‘B leagues,’ it’s just a fun environment for students to come play ball and be with their friends and it’s a less-competitive environment and more of a ‘Let’s come out here and let’s have fun’ environment,” Rodenberg said.

Within intramural sports and sport clubs, students can join a team that has games each week, as well as participate in various sporting events throughout the year, according to Rodenberg.

“We have different events that take place and each term we offer around probably 10 different events for students to be involved with. These are special events that take place on a Friday night, a Saturday or a Sunday,” Rodenberg said. “Some of these events can range from a track meet, a 5K, pickleball, we have a disc golf tournament and an innertube water polo tournament. So we offer a variety of different sports that people can try out or if they’re used to playing in those sports, just being involved and being active again.”

Diversity and Cultural Engagement

Students interested in social justice on the OSU campus, according to Erich Pitcher, the associate director of research and communications at DCE, can get involved with DCE, which connects students to cultural communities they can be a part of.

“Part of what I think we’re trying to do is help students understand systems of power, privilege and oppression, help them understand where they are in those systems, how

that affects their life experiences, and then how to create change,” Pitcher said. “We support students in developing social change-oriented leadership skills.”

Students have various ways to get involved with DCE, according to Pitcher. Students can get involved through internships, volunteering, attending projects and becoming employees of DCE in the office or at one of the seven cultural centers around campus.

“The cultural resource centers are a space for people to connect with people who are like them, but also a space for people to connect with people who are different from them,” Pitcher said. “Part of what we do is building bridges across communities and within communities.”

Fraternity and Sorority Life

If students are looking for a community outside of the OSU campus, they can get involved with Greek life through sororities or fraternities.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to get involved in the university and I think that when you’re involved, you have a better experience,” said Melissa Barr, the vice president of public

relations and marketing for the Panhellenic Executive Council and a junior studying computer science and marketing. “I was really all on my own and joining Greek life, I met so many girls the first week I was here and that was great to have all those friends and support systems so quickly.”

According to Barr, some students overlook getting involved in Greek life because they do not think it would be a proper fit for them.

“I just think that a lot of times people think maybe it’s not for them and I was kind of that person too, but I think giving it a shot and stepping out of your comfort zone is really great,” Barr said.

Students can get involved with Greek life by participating in formal recruitment for sororities and fraternities the first week of school, according to Barr. Students can also join Greek life at any point in college, not only their first year.

Regardless of how students choose to get involved on the OSU campus, the benefits of doing so can have a large impact on their college experiences, according to Grisham.

“All of the skills and tangible things that I’m taking away from college I learned in my extracurricular activities,” Grisham said. “School’s really important, don’t get me wrong, but there’s so much more to learn outside of the classroom.”

OSU dining centers help students eat more nutritious meals

Walking into a typical university dining center, one might expect to be greeted by a barrage of the sights and smells of unhealthy foods.

The dining centers at Oregon State University, however, have taken a direct initiative to ensure healthy, nutritional options are available for students through education and adjusting dining center meals.

“We want to teach individuals that live with us some of those lifelong skills that they’ll need to be healthy,” Tara Sanders, a registered dietitian and the assistant director of nutrition and sustainability at University Housing and Dining Services, said. “We try

to teach skills and recipes that they can duplicate in the residence halls using products either from the dining center or from our stores.”

UHDS offers a number of cooking classes while the university as a whole ensures students learn about nutrition.

As part of the Baccalaureate Core requirements for all degree programs, students are required to take a lifetime fitness for health course, HHS 231, or an equivalent. One of the focuses in HHS 231 is on nutrition and the proper way to construct a healthy diet, according to Dr. Erica Woekel, the director of the Lifetime Fitness for Health Program.

“We do about 40 percent physical activi t y p ro m o t i o n and then 40 percent of nutrition education,” Woekel said. “The other 20 is stress

management, behavior change, that kind of mental health stuff.”

A large number of students taking HHS 231 and gaining this knowledge are first-years living in the residence halls, as required by OSU’s First-Year Experience program, which might make healthy eating even more difficult, according to Woekel.

“I also think there are a lot of competing temptations within a dining hall with how food is positioned and the cost of certain foods,” Woekel said. “I think it becomes really difficult, especially for people living in dorms as freshmen—primarily who I work with—because they are kind of navigating that all for the very first time and they’re trying to figure out what actually is healthy.”

According to Woekel, eating healthy in the dining centers might be hard, but it is possible.

“There are a lot of great things in the dining center. But sometimes it does take a little bit of effort and time and planning,” Woekel said. “I think sometimes when you’re hungry or have a very busy schedule, you kind of go into the dining center like, ‘What looks good? What smells good?’ So, even though we would hope that they

have a bit more planning that goes into food choice, that’s not always the case.”

According to Sanders, student food choices are often motivated by factors other than nutritional value.

“Taste is the top motivator for consumption,” Sanders said. “If it doesn’t taste good, they’re not going to eat it.”

This preference for less-nutritious foods is something that develops as a result of eating an unhealthy diet, according to Woekel.

“Unfortunately we tend to have a high sugar diet in our society, so we tend to get foods that are high in sugar, high in fat and then our taste buds become accustomed to those things,” Woekel said. “Then the idea of moderation is hard because they are accustomed to sugary things and maybe they don’t want to eat things like vegetables—broccoli, dark leafy greens, those kinds of things—because they don’t like them as much.”

that looks good, so that students will eat it, while also containing some healthier aspects, according to Sanders.

“That’s the angle we’re taking with nutrition,” Sanders said. “We want it to be appealing. That’s what’s going to incentivise.”

UHDS does this by changing some of the ingredients in traditionally less-healthy foods so they will still look and taste good while being slightly healthier, according to Sanders.

“We start with healthy ingredients,” Sanders said. “Even if you’re getting a burger, you’re still getting health benefits there. We have a whole grain bun that everyone gets.”

According to Jay Perry, a chef de cuisine at Marketplace West Dining Center, the chefs try to keep a balance in mind as much as possible when it comes to the freshness, taste and nutrition in their ingredients.

“Fresh, flavor and nutrition are all right there at the top,” Perry said. “We don’t compromise one for the other. All three aspects come into play as best as we can.”

In order to do this, Sanders and the chefs work together to create new ideas for upping the nutritional aspects of the dining centers while still keeping the students happy.

“Tara introduces the thought,” Perry said. “And then we discuss it and as chefs it’s our job to turn it into something students will like. We don’t get it right all the time.”

According to Sanders, UHDS gave pizza, which is often considered one of the unhealthier food options, a healthy update by adjusting the crust.

“All of our pizza crust and calzone dough is made in-house and with a whole grain blend,” Sanders said.

dients in a number of the meals, according to Sanders, portion sizes have been minimized as well.

“We’ve shrunk things down a bit,” Sanders said. “We’ve done a lot for portion size control.”

According to Sanders, UHDS also introduced healthier drink options. Although though the typical soda and juice options are still available in the dining centers, large jugs of drinking water are also prominently displayed.

“We just try to make water really accessible because we just want it to be the number one choice,” Sanders said.

UHDS has also implemented self-serve stations, including salad and smoothie bars, which allow students to control and shape healthier options into something that better fits their preferences, according to Sanders.

“Largely what we try to do is make things to order,” Sanders said. “Things that are made in the moment the customer can design. They get to design their food based on their preferences.

That choice factor is huge.”

According to Woekel, planning meals before going into the dining center can be a powerful way to increase nutrition.

“Just thinking about it, it’s almost like the visualization or dreaming of what you’re going to eat,” Woekel said. “That kind of gets you more excited about what you’re eating. But, also then you make better choices because you’re not as swayed by things like smell. So it becomes more empowering for an individual.”

The city bus is free to ride, with service Monday through Saturday throughout the year. For those who choose walking as

their source of transportation, Corvallis is very walkable with only a mild elevation change throughout city limits.

Corvallis has many activities unique to the area which provide students and community members to get to know what the city has to offer, whether it is a jam-packed day or discovery throughout the year.

The Irish Bend covered bridge stands at 36th Street and Campus Way, featuring a two-and-a-half round trip trail leading through farmland and grasslands.

Bike to the Irish Bend Covered Bridge The Irish Bend Bridge is one of three covered bridges in Benton county and one of fifty historic bridges in the state of Oregon.

Pedal Corvallis offers eight bike rideshare stations across the city, two of which are located on Oregon State University’s campus—one near the Kerr Administration building on 26th Street and another outside Weniger Hall on Monroe Avenue.

The service offers a three-day pass with a fee of $5, a one month pass with a $10 fee and an annual pass with a fee of $25.

After the fee is paid, trips under two hours are free, with every additional hour costing $3, up to $24 per ride. Pedal Corvallis adds an additional charge for bikes kept

over 24 hours.

From the Weniger Hall station, the Irish Bend Covered Bridge is a two-anda-half mile round trip on a mostly flat bike ride through OSU’s scenic campus.

The path to the covered bridge cuts through pastureland for the dairy farm and a six-acre solar farm, and is a frequented recreation site for students and the Corvallis community alike.

After working up an appetite on a bike ride, the Pedal Corvallis station near Weniger Hall is adjacent to Monroe Avenue, which offers over a dozen dining options providing a wide array of cuisine.

Find something fresh at the Farmers’ Market The Corvallis Farmers’ Market occurs every Wednesday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., April through November.

Vendors set up along NW 1st Street and the Willamette River, one of a few rivers in the United States that flows south to north. The market hosts dozens of vendors selling artisanal meats and cheeses, fresh produce, live music and locally-grown plant starts for budding or seasoned gardeners. The market also hosts local farms from the greater Corvallis area, which includes Midway Farms located on Highway 20 near Albany and Gathering Together Farm in Philomath.

Catch a flick at the Darkside Cinema Founded in April 2005 as the successor of the Avalon Theatre, the Darkside Cinema is the only independent, locally-owned movie theatre in Corvallis.

Located on the corner of 4th Street and Madison Avenue in the heart of downtown Cor vallis, the Darkside Cinema specializes in independent, art and foreign releases.

“We try to keep it dynamic,” Darkside Cinema owner Paul Turner said.

Being the closest theatre to campus, the Darkside Cinema hosts film festivals and classes partnered with the OSU film department throughout the year. The walls of the theatre are decorated with paraphernalia of well-known Hollywood movies like posters for “Silence of the Lambs” and James Dean, and includes a

neon-lit velvet painting gallery.

According to Turner, the Darkside Cinema stands apart from the other two movie theatres in Corvallis because of its size.

“You spend a lot of time in class just being a student. If you go to the bigger theatre, you are treated as just another admission. But if you come here, we treat you like a human being,” Turner said.

General admission is $9 and students with a valid ID can get tickets for $7.75.

The Darkside Cinema is one of the many places in town to cool off from the Corvallis summer heat in an air-conditioned theatre and catch a flick.

Shop local Downtown Corvallis is home to businesses like Many Hands Trading and Mod Pod that feature handcrafted goods by local artisans alongside a constantlyrotating selection of wares. Both stores offer a unique collection of Corvallis and Oregon-centric goods.

Mod Pod has had a storefront on NW 2nd Street since 2009 and specializes in boutique-style clothes and modern furnishings.

“Mod Pod is fun, affordable fashions and gifts. We specialize in fun, happy things like a gummy-bear nightlight,” owner Jessica Klein said.

As a counselor at CAPS, Jim Gouveia sees many firstyears and understands how common depression and anxiety are in today’s society. For first-years trying to manage their mental health, Gouveia suggests trying to avoid becoming isolated. Learning about resources from CAPS if students know they have a disorder coming into college is a good idea, according to Gouveia.

Gouveia mentioned taking alone time to practice self-care, especially for introverts who get tired around groups of people, as a way to stay mentally healthy throughout college. From the meditation room in the Student Experience Center to taking a hike in a nearby forest, to a study room in The Valley Library, there are a lot of ways to find peace and quiet.

“One thing that Oregon State has is nature that is close enough that you can ride your bike or walk to. So take advantage of that. Don’t sit on campus 24/7 and sit in your room. Take a walk to the (covered bridge off of 30th Street), go to Bald Hill.Those are all within walking distance. And sometimes, nature can be the biggest healer,” Gouveia said.

According to Gouveia, over 370 student organizations exist on campus. Getting involved, especially in a volunteer capacity, can make students feel happier about their college experience.

An emphasis on physical health Another resource for wellness at OSU is Student Health Services. Many students will get sick at least once during their first year on campus, and SHS offers walk-in appointments with certified nurses at the Plageman Student Health Center.

“SHS staff is very experienced in dealing with students and... all records are strictly confidential,” Carley said via email.

Carley emphasized that students should take preventative measures, like frequent sanitizing, to avoid getting sick, especially for students living in communal environments like residence halls.

If students do get sick, however, a pharmacy is located on the first floor of Plageman, where students can get prescriptions filled or pick up over-the-counter medications. In addition, many students choose to bring some common medical supplies with them to college for easy access.

Useful things to bring include: “Thermometer, Ibuprofen or acetaminophen, Band-Aids, antiseptic

wipes, antibiotic ointment, instant cold compress, basic first aid kit, hand sanitizer, sanitizing wipes to keep environment clean,” Carley listed via email.

SHS also has affiliated services to take care of students in other ways. They offer massage therapy, a Collegiate Recovery Community for students who are struggling with alcohol or other drug use, wellness coaching and much more. More information about these resources can be found on the SHS website.

Eating intelligently For students who are worried about managing a healthy diet while at college, SHS @ Dixon, located in Dixon Recreation Center, offers nutrition counseling.

This service is free and confidential—all students have to do is make an appointment. Nutrition counseling can be an option for learning how to plan out meals on a campus where students can fall into a rut with eating choices. Amy Frasieur, a registered dietitian nutritionist at OSU, encourages students to try new foods and stay active. When Frasieur meets with students, she helps them make plans to stay healthy.

“I hope that the impact I am making on campus is a combination of supporting students’overall well-being, offering education/information on food/cooking/nutrition and disseminating that individuals can be healthy at any size,” Frasieur said.

Taking time to explore Some students may also need to take some extra time to figure out the type of person they want to be now that they are becoming more independent.

Gouveia wants OSU students to see college as a time to find themselves, but in a way in which they are not trying to pander to others.

“My thing is, be intentional about understanding your freedom. Align your values with your behavior, have integrity in your actions; you will feel better and you will perform better,” Gouveia said.

Gouveia sometimes sees students that get a little too carried away in their newfound freedom and stop focusing on their goals.

On the other hand, Gouveia also sees a lot of perfectionists and people who constantly compare themselves to others.

“You don’t need to be superhuman. It’s not necessary for you to be perfect at everything you do; both academically, socially, emotionally; you’re just human.
