THE EDITOR Dear reader, Scientifically, the process of regenerating begins by dividing an organism into two parts before piecing it back together in a new, unique form.

Much like these organisms, our community has been divided for some time now—but we are finding ways to come together again, stronger than before.

For us at ENYE, regeneration does not just mean something new—it also means building off what our ancestors, community and peers have previously created.

Even the theme—Regeneración—is not new. The theme of this issue was inspired by a revolutionary newspaper from the 1900s published in the midst of a dictatorship in Mexico.

The stories in this issue feature voices in the Latine community that are actively combating stereotypes and injustices. While it is important for us as a staff, and as Latines, to have a conversation about these uncomfortable topics, we wanted to celebrate the actions community members are taking to inspire others to regenerate in their own way.

A big thanks to the team at ENYE, the class of journalism 450 students and professor Teresa Puente for making the magic happen. None of this would have been possible without their collaboration and support.

We hope the reader is inspired to understand that even after destruction, the next step is to always regenerate.

onduras’ Kitchen, located in downtown Long Beach, has represented and supported the Honduran community through culture and food for over three decades. However, this dedication has recently been interrupted

by ICE raids throughout the city.

“Unfortunately, the reality is we’re struggling to stay afloat because people have stopped coming to visit us because of the fear of what might happen,” co-owner and manager of the restaurant in Long Beach, Rafael Larios III, said.

Besides food delivery, there are other ways the public, immigrant community and business owners can support each other.

“Shopping at them, but also showing up for them in actual protests, doing what Minneapolis has been doing,” said Alfredo Carlos, Assistant Professor of Labor Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills. “If they don't shut down, but maybe if they provide discounts for people at the protests, I know for a fact that the people that are protesting will go and frequent that establishment a lot more,” Carlos said.

Its first location opened in Huntington Park in 1991 when Rafael II and Maritza Larios decided to start a business based on Honduran cuisine and culture.

After several years, and gaining popularity by streaming soccer games, Rafael rented more places to accommodate more people.

“That caused him to realize where certain events were doing better, one being here in Long Beach, because Long Beach has a large population of [the] Honduran community,” Larios III, said.

Larios’ father purchased the building from a previous Honduran restaurant, and it opened as the second location in 2006.

Although this newer spot is only known locally, the restaurant itself, as well as its first location, is known nationwide and globally.

“We would bring social media influencers, soccer players, soccer coaches, different things [that] people that learn their culture might [like],” Larios III said.

Those invited to the restaurant include Lil June Afro Punta, CEO of Honduran dance label Unity Soul Company, and James Tir, owner of lbfoodcoma.

As he left the military and focused on the restaurant, Larios III had a few interactions with patrons that left him wanting to pursue a new goal.

“When I first took over this location in 2012, there were a lot of people who just didn’t know Honduran food. They would come in here and they thought it was Mexican food,” Larios III said.

To bring awareness to the difference between this cuisine and other Latino cuisines, he points out items that are unique to Honduras.

“One thing that I always emphasize is las tejadas [fried plantains],” Larios III said.

“I explain to [them that] they’re called tejadas because of the angle that we cut them.”

here in the United States, Larios III and his brother also gave aid abroad by helping community members provide donations.

The Larios Foundation, started in 2020 by the family, has its origins dating back to 1999, when Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras.

At the time, Hondurans living in the U.S. were devastated. Since they could not send essential supplies to their families, they gave donations to the restaurant.

“I remember our house, when we used to live in South Gate, was just full of donations, like mountains,” Larios III said.

Shirley Andrade, 42, and a frequent local customer at the location in Huntington Park, finds a comfortable, ambient atmosphere when she goes to eat there.

“It’s really quiet, and it’s a nice place to just eat in peace,” Andrade said.

Rafael Larios III is still helping his people in Honduras and plans to visit the country in March, in collaboration with Rotary International, a global non-profit organization that helps sustain communities through essential resources aiming to reduce poverty and disease.

“We, as Hondurans, have an obligation to teach people our culture. It’s in our blood,” Larios III said.

ichael Martinez brews coffee for Long Beach residents at the Harvest Farmers Market at Bixby Park on Saturday mornings.

He aims to replicate the warmth of his hometown Comayagua, Honduras.

Residents arrived at the market to buy produce, hand crafted goods and freshly made food and drinks. Martinez’s post, “Mijos Martinez,” is serving organic coffee and specialty drinks used with beans sourced from Honduras.

Martinez wanted to become the bridge for the average American coffee consumer, who may be familiar with Colombian coffee and other varieties, to try out Honduran coffee.

“I wanted to showcase coffee, with how hard the Honduran coffee farmers work to make a great product,” Martinez said.

“Honduras is more than all the bad media that we get with crime, immigration and everything.”

Honduras coffee is not as popular as Colombian and other recognized coffee being sourced, according to Martinez. He traveled to Honduras and returned with coffee in February of 2020 before the pandemic hit a month later.

The farmers market is the only place Martinez sells coffee in Long Beach as he begins to meet and talk to people about coffee. Throughout the last five to six years, he has travelled throughout Southern California looking to pursue his passion for coffee, landing him in Long Beach where he has been selling the most. “It’s great to meet different communities but

The coffee business he started has brought Martinez memories of his past as a kid drinking coffee and doing errands with his grandmother in Honduras. He is reminded of his time helping at the corner store in Comayagua, or as they called them, “pulperías.”

On the weekends, Martinez used to head up to the farm with the rest of the family to hang out and would bring back produce or other items needed for the "pulpería."

He feels connected to these memories and his homeland through the similar work he puts in the farmers market. Other Honduran locals feel the same connection.

Martinez has welcomed them into his store, realizing there is a large community in the area he was unaware about.

“That’s been a huge bonus,” Martinez said. “It just feels aligned to everything I’m doing, kind of like I was supposed to be here in the area.” His stand offers hot and cold options for customers to try out including specialty drinks like Brown Sugar Banana and Coconut Cold Brew. Customers can also take bags of Hondruan coffee beans home, or order them online at mijosmartinez.com.

The coffee shines with a fruity note without the harsh acidity along with a natural sweetness that soothes the pallet with every sip. Showcasing its unique taste in comparison to other brands available in Long Beach.

Martinez freshly brews the coffee with his own coffee maker specifically brewed to the temperature and the quantity of the ground beans to be used. Along with cold brewed options, he brings in thermal containers for residents for a refreshing option.

One of Martinez’s regulars, Genaro Bonilla, arrives by bike to fill coffee in his thermal as he commutes towards his destination.

“I support the local businesses that’s around the area wherever I go,” Bonilla said. “Martinez’s coffee is the reason I come back.”

New customers, curious about the coffee, were offered samples and were amazed by the quality and the taste. Erica Amaro, a first time customer, loved the coffee and the market’s atmosphere. “It doesn’t taste like any of the other major coffees that I’ve tried,” Amaro said.

Martinez’s coffee has brought joy to residents through his attempt to bring the home-like atmosphere of Comayagua. He is praised for his commitment to the community and to his home nation as he continues to share the love of coffee.

“I feel great joy and pride as people look at me and are able to connect with me through just a simple cup of coffee,” Martinez said.

“It’s just like a simplistic beauty and community which is plenty for me.”

BUILDING BRIDGES For Latino Professionals

programs, the organization provides students with preparation, accessibility and representation needed to navigate their future as professionals. The organization also has pillars which include mentorship, leadership, professional development and community.

ALPFA at CSULB aims to facilitate that transition. For many college students— especially Latino and first generation students—the path into corporate America is a new frontier. ALPFA serves as a stepping stone between the classroom and the professional world, guiding students'

In 2024, a study by Coqual found that Latinos remain underrepresented in corporate leadership, making up just 10% of managers and 5% of executives. The report also noted that 40% of Latino professionals said they feel the need to alter aspects of themselves in order to succeed at work.

Coqual aims to create more equity by identifying workplace bias and addressing the challenges that limit professional growth for marginalized groups.

asmine Medina, a fourth-year accounting major at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) has always had ambitious goals. As a first-generation student, she felt she had to take an extra step to find career guidance and found it through the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA).

Entering professional spaces where no one looks like you or has modeled the path forward can make the journey daunting, Medina said. ALPFA serves as that blueprint for students on connecting them with campus opportunities. Outside of campus these opportunities look like audit or tax associates positions for Deloitte even offering full time offers, Baker Tilly Internships and Ernst & Young (EY) as well.

Medina currently serves as president of ALPFA and plans on continuously contributing and maintaining the ongoing legacy this club has given her.

“It really took away the nerve of thinking about it as a scary kind of thing. I don’t get scared of navigating these spaces.

"I don’t get scared of taking up space in these places,” Medina said.

Beyond the community and setting aspect, ALPFA focuses heavily on creating direct access to professionals in common fields to the applicant. Through networking events, alumni partnerships and structured mentorship programs, students are introduced to professionals. ALPFA brings an environment designed to ease the intimidation many students feel in these competitive spots.

"I personally benefited from ALPFA and was able to secure an incoming tax internship at EY through the opportunities and connections I gained from ALPFA,” said Flores.

“We don’t see ourselves as a society. We see ourselves as a community, uplifting each other and sharing opportunities, growing and developing professionally,” Medina said.

For Jocelyn Flores, accounting major and ALPFA’s director of marketing, that access shifted her perspective beyond the classroom.

She joined the group in fall 2025. “ALPFA has been a strong foundation for viewing my professional life beyond just being a student,” Flores said. “It’s given me insight into what it looks like—knowing how to build a resume, how to talk to recruiters, who to speak to and what questions to ask.”

In addition to networking events, ALPFA also offers mentorship through PEG—Professional Education Guidance Mentorship—which pairs students with professionals who volunteer their time and experience.

The positions of these professionals can vary in different fields like accounting and marketing, falling around the theme of business. These mentorships serve as a helping hand into the corporate world while also being that role model many students don’t have.

“It’s not just internship opportunities or job offers. It’s also creating spaces where students can see themselves in those roles,” Medina said.

“I’m more reserved and shy, but honestly, that helped me break the ice. It really helped me become more confident within myself and be open minded,” a fourth-year accounting major who joined ALPFA in her final semester, Nereida Palacios said.

ALPFA fosters a space that enhances how to actively use communication skills and incorporate them in different settings.

Palacios touches on how the more she engages with professionals the easier it is to humanize and relate. She said that sense of comfort extended beyond formal networking events. Some of the smaller gatherings allowed her to engage with professionals in a more relaxed setting, furthering that comfort.

“El cafecito… talking with professionals… that was something that stuck with me,” Palacios said. “But the more professionals I spoke with, and the more questions I heard from other students, it made me feel comfortable to ask anything because they’re like us, they’re people.”

ALPFA provides different workshops and networking events to introduce practical tools to extend beyond coursework.

Some of these events range from resume building and professional headshots, to professional companies and guest speakers. Although the thought of an authoritative figure can be intimidating, rather than replicating rigid corporate environments, ALPFA aims to structure events to feel approachable.

“Our events give you the opportunity to see professionals as people, not someone you should be scared of,” Flores said.

“We emphasize that professionals are people too.

There’s a place for you there just like there was for them.”

Dear CSULB Community, We continue to hold deep grief and for the countless lives harmed, detained, and lost due to ongoing ICE raids and immigration enforcement. It did not make national headlines but in September 2025 ICE agents shot and killed Silverio Villegas González in Chicago under similar circumstances as Renee Nicole Good killed in Minneapolis in January. Their killings are a tragedy, and it sits alongside the devastating losses our communities continue to endure. In 2025 alone, 32 immigrants died while in ICE detention—most of them Latinx. These deaths are part of a system that targets, dehumanizes, and endangers our gente.

Many of us cannot stop thinking: that could have been one of us. One of our students. One of our family members. One of our community members who refuses to look away when injustice unfolds. Renee and Silverio stood where so many in our communities stand—between harm and the people we love—and the violence they experienced echoes what our immigrant communities have faced for decades.

For Latinx, Black, and immigrant communities, this moment hits a familiar and painful nerve. We live with the reality that speaking up, observing, or even simply existing in public space can invite suspicion, harassment, or violence, simply due to our skin color. Community care is too often treated as criminal. Survival itself becomes political. These are not abstractions—they shape the daily lives of our students, our families, and our campus community.

At CSULB, we support students who carry these fears every day. Students who worry about their parents during routine drives. Students who avoid public spaces. Students who ask us quietly, “What happens if something happens to my family?” The deaths of Silverio and Renee and the many individuals lost in detention make those fears heavier and heartbreakingly real.

In this moment, we turn toward one another. Our strength has always come from collective care, from sharing knowledge, and from protecting our communities however we can.

We invite our campus community to contribute to the Latinx Faculty and Staff Association Padlet, where we are gathering resources for undocumented and mixed-status individuals. If you know of support services, legal aid, emergency assistance, or community-based organizations, please share them. This is one way we care for each other when systems fail us. One such organization in Long Beach is Orale and they are looking for volunteers to document, to donate and more.

We also want our community to know that the Latinx Faculty and Staff Association is currently in the works of organizing programming this spring semester to support our undocumented, mixed-status, and immigrant communities and the faculty and staff who serve them.

We honor every life harmed or lost in ICE custody and through immigration enforcement. We carry them with us as we continue showing up for our students and our communities—con amor, con dignidad, y con resistencia.

nside of the Los Angeles Ale Works Brewery on a recent night in February, it was a surprisingly bustling scene for a Tuesday night.

The brewery was filled with people, families and even babies in strollers.

The large patio was busy with food vendors, outdoor bowling lanes and DJs playing music. The impressive turnout was mostly due to the fundraiser being hosted in honor of the Pacheco Family.

Jennifer Pacheco, a first-generation Chicana, also known as Rudeblue, is a DJ who regularly spins at the brewery.

She has been spinning records for 10 years and has been part of a Latina women musical record collective, “Musica.Y.Mujeres” since its inception in Long Beach over three years ago. The music is enjoyed by a diverse audience across generations, evoking feelings of connection and shared community.

What Pacheco didn't know was how she would soon have to turn to this community for support.

On January 23, Gerardo Pacheco, Jennifer's father, was commuting to work around 7 a.m. in San Bernardino County. He was driving as normal when he saw police sirens signaling him to pull over.

He was shortly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has been in detention ever since, being constantly transported and even moved to a detention center out of state in Texas.

Making the processes for legal representation very difficult.

As Pacheco explained, once her family obtained an attorney, they would have to find another one to represent him in the state of Texas, despite being detained and residing in California.

“We were already struggling to find a lawyer...we found a lawyer but now that he got moved to a different state, that lawyer can’t represent him no more, so now we have to start all over again,” Pacheco said.

So Pacheco turned to her community and to what she knows best̶DJ’ing.

The turnout for the collective Noche De Alma fundraiser to honor the Pacheco family, hosted by Ale Works, revealed the impact of ICE activity in the community and the role of support and connection that music serves in the lives of community members.

“I think there are bigger problems that we need to address as far as political issues rather than immigration issues especially in L.A.,” said record vendor, Alex Ochoa.

“It's been hard, I've been really upset.

My family and I were all super upset about that, but at least we were able to locate him; it's just been a process,” said Pacheco.

An overall positive sentiment permeating through the crowd of people at this turnout was the uniting quality of music and the love of oldies by the Latinx and other communities.

“Music is really a healing method. It brings people together, you can see that people, basically anyone's welcome here and we have a common ground. We’re like, ‘we love music, we love to listen to music, we want to enjoy and talk to people about you know, talk it out, and it doesn't have to be this crazy,’” Ochoa said.

Robert Rodriguez has been collecting records since he was 13 years old and regularly DJ’s at the brewery.

“We’ve been at this venue at Los Angeles Ale Works for two and a half years, and you know this is our community, we're here every single Tuesday, so we just want to show support for Jenny and raise extra funds for her and her family,” said Rodriguez. “Music is a time away from the nonsense, and whatever nonsense, it doesn't even have to be political, it could be familial, it could be you know work, it could be just whatever's happening in life, music brings joy, and to us it's like that's why we do this,” said Rodriguez.

The community that the brewery brings makes all the difference for families like Pacheco’s. Without community support, the financial hardships and burden would all fall on Jennifer and her family as they live from paycheck to paycheck.

“We want to bring joy to people, and thankfully, Los Angeles Ale Works gives us a platform every Tuesday, ” said Rodriguez.

According to a 2024 study from the Pew Research Center, 52% of U.S. Latinas say sexism in the workplace is a big problem and 62% say they face great pressure to appear beautiful.

When activists echo the same language that objectifies Latina women, even jokingly, they’re reinforcing the same power structures that demean them.

A National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey found that while Latinas do not report higher rates of victimization than other groups, one in seven Latinas has experienced a completed rape in their lifetime. That number alone should end the joke.

The casual trivialization of these realities can help explain why some women are afraid to reach out for help.

Finally, this rhetoric reinforces old and harmful stereotypes, particularly that of La Malinche, the Indigenous woman vilified in Mexican history as a “traitorous harlot” for aiding the Spanish conquistadors.

For centuries, “La Malinche” has been used to label women seen as betraying “La Raza” for their sexuality or proximity to power. In truth, La Malinche was a woman with little agency, forced into her role under threat and for survival. Even Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has joined historians in reevaluating her legacy, not as a villain, but as a woman exploited and misrepresented by men.

Like La Malinche, Latina women today still face judgment and fetishization for choices or traits often beyond their control.

Turning that history into a meme or a protest punchline repeats the same cycle of blame and objectification.

Like those historians now rethinking La Malinche’s story, U.S. activists should also rethink their own. Advocating for immigration reform by sexualizing Latina women isn’t funny, and it doesn’t work.

If you really support Latinas, retire the “baddies” messaging and start protecting Latina women, including their dignity, safety, and respect.

BREAKING GENERATIONAL CYCLES

anuela Cervantes is a former foster youth who became a mother at 15. This mother went back to college at the age of 40.

Growing up, Cervantes was in between two worlds. As a Latina navigating the foster care system, she often felt like she was balancing two identities that did not

“As a returning student, that identity is my foundation, it's the resilience and the ganas to keep fighting,” Cervantes said.

“My Latina identity was a source of both strength and complicity in the system,” she said.

“I often felt caught between worlds, trying to hold onto my culture while navigating spaces that didn’t always undersand it.”

First-generation students are defined as the first in their household to pursue higher education, but that doesn’t stop there. In some Latinx families, higher education becomes multigenerational, with their parents returning to school after their children graduate.

According to statewide data, Latinx students represent 48.9% of total enrollment.

However, systematic barriers remain, particularly for students who have experienced being in foster care. Research from Annie E. Casey Foundation explains that only 8% to 12% of foster youth earn a two or four-year degree by their mid to late 20s, compared to 49% of young adults in the general population.

“The system wasn't built with cultural needs in mind.”

Cervantes remembers holding onto her culture in quiet ways. Through food, music and memories, because that was something the system could not take from her. Her life quickly shifted when she became a mom.

“It was no longer just about surviving. It was about building a future,” Cervantes said. With every decision she made, even the hard ones, there was always one important question: Would this give her son a chance?

Education became both a path to stability and a way to show her son that their circumstances did not define their future. It became nonnegotiable.

Joshua Chacon, her son, majored in English education and earned his bachelor’s degree in 2023. Now, he is pursuing two master's degrees—one in library science and another in educational psychology.

“She said it was the most important thing I could get and that education is the only easy way to escape poverty,” Chacon said.

At only 16 years old, Cervantes enrolled her son in community college while he was still in high school.

“I’d say that instilled a sense of determination and importance in me,” Chacon said.

“She used to drive miles and miles to take me sometimes and spent so much of her time and money to get me through,” he said. “Sometimes, she even took classes with me.”

Now 25, Chacon says that his mom returning to college at 40 fills him with pride. “I was nothing but proud of her,” he said.

For Chacon, his mom returning to school represents something much bigger to him.

“Understanding what higher education is and what the expectations are can be one of the biggest challenges,” Leyva said.

“They’re excited to be admitted, but once they’re here, they’re asking, ‘Now what do I do?’”

Leyva, was also a first-generation Latino student and said navigating financial aid and course registration can feel overwhelming, especially for students balancing family responsibilities.

“A lot of our Latinx students carry obligations at home,” he said. “They may be picking up siblings, working multiple jobs or supporting their fa m il i e s . That impacts how they experience the university.”

Programs like EOP and Guardian Scholars help by offering advising, financial literacy workshops and community support.

Según datos del sistema de la Universidad Estatal de California, los estudiantes latinos representan el 48.9% de la matrícula total.

Sin embargo, persisten barreras sistemáticas, especialmente para estudiantes que viven en hogares temporales. Una investigación de la Fundación Annie E. "Ya no se trataba sólo de sobrevivir. Se trataba de construir un futuro", Cervantes declaró.

En cada decisión que tomaba, incluso las más difíciles, siempre había una pregunta importante: ¿Le daría esto una oportunidad a su hijo?

La educación era el camino hacia la estabilidad y también una forma de demostrarle que sus circunstancias no definen su futuro. Se volvió innegociable.

Al analizarlo en detalle, la broma tácita detrás de "No deporten a las latinas con traseros grandes" es que los hombres evitarían la deportación de mujeres atractivas a cambio de favores sexuales. No tiene gracia. Es una coerción disfrazada de comedia.

Una Encuesta Nacional sobre Violencia de Pareja y Sexual reveló que, si bien las latinas no reportan tasas de victimización más altas que otros grupos, una de cada siete latinas ha sufrido una violación a lo largo de su vida. Esa cifra por sí sola debería acabar con la broma.

La trivialización superficial de estas realidades puede ayudar a explicar por qué algunas mujeres temen buscar ayuda.

Finalmente, esta retórica refuerza viejos y dañinos estereotipos, en particular el de La Malinche, la mujer indígena vilipendiada en la historia mexicana como una "ramera traidora" por ayudar a los conquistadores españoles.

Durante siglos, el término "Malinche" se ha utilizado para etiquetar a las mujeres consideradas traicioneras de "La Raza" por su sexualidad o proximidad al poder. En realidad, la Malinche fue una mujer con poca autonomía, obligada a asumir su rol bajo amenaza y por supervivencia. Incluso la presidenta de México, Claudia Sheinbaum, se ha unido a los historiadores para reevaluar su legado, no como una villana, sino como una mujer explotada y tergiversada por los hombres.

Al igual que la Malinche, las mujeres latinas de hoy aún enfrentan juicios y fetichismo por decisiones o rasgos que a menudo escapan a su control. Convertir esa historia en un meme o en el chiste de una protesta repite el mismo ciclo de culpa y cosificación.

Al igual que los historiadores que ahora reconsideran la historia de la Malinche, los activistas estadounidenses también deberían reconsiderar la suya. Defender la reforma migratoria sexualizando a las mujeres latinas no tiene gracia y no funciona.

Si realmente apoyas a las latinas, deja de lado los mensajes de "mamacitas" y empieza a protegerlas, incluyendo su dignidad, seguridad y respeto.

“Llevamos dos años y medio en este local de ‘Los Ángeles Ale Works’, y sabemos que esta es nuestra comunidad, estamos aquí todos los martes, así que solo queremos mostrar nuestro apoyo a Jenny y recaudar fondos adicionales para ella y su familia”, dijo Rodríguez. “La música es un respiro de las tonterías, y sean cuales sean esas tonterías, ni siquiera tienen qué ser políticas, pueden ser familiares, pueden ser del trabajo sabes, pueden ser cualquier cosa que esté pasando en la vida, la música trae alegría y para nosotros es como por eso hacemos esto”, explicó Rodríguez.

na noche de febrero en “Los Ángeles Ale Works”, ofreció una escena sorprendentemente animada para ser un martes por la noche. La cervecería estuvo llena de gente, familias y hasta bebés en carriolas. El gran patio se llenó de puestos de comida, pistas de boliche y DJs tocando música. Llegaron para apoyar a la familia Pacheco.

Jennifer Pacheco, una chicana de primera generación, también conocida como “Rudeblue”, es una DJ que toca discos regularmente en la cervecería “Los Ángeles Ale Works” en Hawthorne, Calif. Lleva 10 años tocando discos para el público y forma parte del colectivo musical de mujeres latinas, Música.Y.Mujeres, desde su creación en Long Beach hace más de tres años. La música que se reproduce es disfrutada por mayores y jóvenes, lo que invoca sentimientos de conexión y comunidad.

Pero Pacheco no se imaginó que pronto tendría que recurrir a esta comunidad para buscar apoyo.

al trabajo a las siete de la mañana en el condado de San Bernardino. Conducía como siempre cuando vio sirenas de patrullas indicando que se detuviera.

Poco después fue detenido por el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas o ICE, según sus letras en inglés, y desde entonces ha permanecido detenido, siendo transportado constantemente e incluso trasladado a un centro de detención en Texas.

Esto ha dificultado mucho los procesos para obtener representación legal.

Como explicó Pacheco, cuando la familia ya había conseguido un abogado, tuvieron que buscar otro para que lo representara en el estado de Texas después de ser trasladado aunque fue detenido y reside en California.

“Ya nos estaba costando mucho encontrar un abogado…Encontramos uno, pero ahora que fue trasladado a otro estado, ese abogado ya no puede representarlo, así que ahora tenemos que empezar de nuevo”, explicó Pacheco.

Entonces Pacheco recurrió a su comunidad y a lo que mejor domina: ser DJ. La multitud que a atendió la recaudación de fondos de la colectiva Noche De Alma en honor a la familia Pacheco, organizada por “Los Ángeles Ale Works”, muestra el impacto de la actividad de ICE en la comunidad y la función que el apoyo y la conexión de la música tiene en los miembros de la comunidad.

“Creo que hay problemas políticos más importantes que debemos abordar que los temas de inmigración, especialmente en Los Ángeles”, dijo el vendedor de discos Alex Ochoa.

“Ha sido duro, he estado muy alterada, mi familia y yo estábamos muy tristes por eso, pero al menos pudimos localizarlo, ha sido todo un proceso”, dijo Pacheco.

Dear CSULB Community, We continue to hold deep grief and for the countless lives harmed, detained, and lost due to ongoing ICE raids and immigration enforcement. It did not make national headlines but in September 2025 ICE agents shot and killed Silverio Villegas González in Chicago under similar circumstances as Renee Nicole Good killed in Minneapolis in January. Their killings are a tragedy, and it sits alongside the devastating losses our communities continue to endure. In 2025 alone, 32 immigrants died while in ICE detention—most of them Latinx. These deaths are part of a system that targets, dehumanizes, and endangers our gente.

Many of us cannot stop thinking: that could have been one of us. One of our students. One of our family members. One of our community members who refuses to look away when injustice unfolds. Renee and Silverio stood where so many in our communities stand—between harm and the people we love—and the violence they experienced echoes what our immigrant communities have faced for decades.

For Latinx, Black, and immigrant communities, this moment hits a familiar and painful nerve. We live with the reality that speaking up, observing, or even simply existing in public space can invite suspicion, harassment, or violence, simply due to our skin color. Community care is too often treated as criminal. Survival itself becomes political. These are not abstractions—they shape the daily lives of our students, our families, and our campus community.

At CSULB, we support students who carry these fears every day. Students who worry about their parents during routine drives. Students who avoid public spaces. Students who ask us quietly, “What happens if something happens to my family?” The deaths of Silverio and Renee and the many individuals lost in detention make those fears heavier and heartbreakingly real.

In this moment, we turn toward one another. Our strength has always come from collective care, from sharing knowledge, and from protecting our communities however we can.

We invite our campus community to contribute to the Latinx Faculty and Staff Association Padlet, where we are gathering resources for undocumented and mixed-status individuals. If you know of support services, legal aid, emergency assistance, or community-based organizations, please share them. This is one way we care for each other when systems fail us. One such organization in Long Beach is Orale and they are looking for volunteers to document, to donate and more.

We also want our community to know that the Latinx Faculty and Staff Association is currently in the works of organizing programming this spring semester to support our undocumented, mixed-status, and immigrant communities and the faculty and staff who serve them.

We honor every life harmed or lost in ICE custody and through immigration enforcement. We carry them with us as we continue showing up for our students and our communities—con amor, con dignidad, y con resistencia.

“No nos vemos como una sociedad. Nos vemos como una comunidad, levantándonos el uno al otro y compartiendo oportunidades, creciendo y desarrollándonos profesionalmente”, explicó Medina.

Para Jocelyn Flores, estudiante de contabilidad y directora de mercadotecnia de ALPFA, ese acceso cambió su perspectiva más allá del aula.

Se unió en otoño del 2025. “ALPFA ha sido una base sólida para mi perspectiva sobre mi vida profesional más allá de ser estudiante”, Flores agregó. “Me ha dado más profundidad en cómo se ve esto—sabiendo cómo construir un currículum, cómo hablar con reclutadores, a quién dirigirse y cuáles preguntas preguntar”.

ALPFA ofrece diferentes talleres y eventos para expandir contactos profesionales e introducir herramientas prácticas para extenderse más allá del trabajo escolar.

Algunos de estos eventos varían desde cómo construir un currículum y fotografías profesionales, a compañías profesionales y locutores invitados. Aunque el pensar en una figura de autoridad puede ser intimidante, en vez de replicar la atmósfera rígida corporativa, ALPFA intenta estructurar eventos que se sienten accesibles.

Los puestos de estos profesionales varían en distintos campos dentro de la industria empresarial como la contabilidad y la mercadotecnia. Estas mentorías funcionan como un apoyo para ingresar al mundo corporativo, así como un modelo a seguir que le falta a muchos estudiantes.

“No solamente se trata de oportunidades de prácticas profesionales u ofertas de empleo. Es también sobre crear espacios donde los estudiantes puedan verse reflejados en esos puestos”, señaló Medina.

“A través de nuestro programa de mentoría, PEG, los estudiantes son conectados con profesionales que desean retribuir a la comunidad”.

Mientras el acceso crea oportunidades, la preparación genera seguridad en uno mismo. “Soy más reservada y tímida, pero honestamente, eso me ayudó a romper el hielo. Me permitió ser más segura en mí misma y más abierta de ideas”, expresó Nereida Palacios, una estudiante de cuarto año de contabilidad que se unió a ALPFA en su último semestre.

Palacios menciona que, entre más interactúa con profesionales, más fácil se vuelve humanizar esas relaciones y sentirse identificada con ellos. Dijo que esa sensación de comodidad se extiende más allá de eventos formales de conexiones profesionales. Algunos de los encuentros pequeños le permitieron interactuar con profesionales en un ambiente más relajado, fortaleciendo aún más esa comodidad.

“El cafecito… hablar con profesionales… fue algo que realmente se quedó conmigo”, comentó Palacios. “Pero mientras más profesionales conocía y más preguntas escuchaba de otros estudiantes, más cómoda me sentía en preguntar lo que fuera, porque son como nosotros, son personas".

asmine Medina, una estudiante de contabilidad en su cuarto año de la Universidad Estatal de California, Long Beach (CSULB), siempre ha tenido metas ambiciosas. Como estudiante de primera generación, sintió que tuvo que tomar pasos adicionales para encontrar esa guía en su carrera y la encontró mediante la Asociación de Profesionales Latinos para América (ALPFA).

La ALPFA en CSULB se dedica a facilitar esa transición. Para muchos estudiantes universitarios—especialmente latinos y estudiantes de primera generación—el camino hacía la América corporativa es una frontera nueva. ALPFA sirve como un escalón entre el salón y el mundo profesional, guiando la transición de estudiantes entre preparación académica y

En el 2024, un estudio de Coqual dio a la luz que todavía hay representación insuficiente para latinos en el liderazgo corporativo, con un representación del 10% de gerentes y 5% de ejecutivos. El reporte también notó que el 40% de latinos profesionales sienten que necesitan alterar aspectos de sí mismos para obtener éxito en el trabajo. Coqual pretende crear más equidad al identificar preferencias injustas en el trabajo y reconociendo las dificultades que limitan el crecimiento profesional de grupos marginalizados.

Ingresar a espacios profesionales en donde nadie se parece a ti o ha moldeado el camino a seguir puede ser intimidante, dijo Jasmine Medina. ALPFA sirve como ese modelo a seguir para conectar a estudiantes con oportunidades en el campus. Fuera del campus, estas oportunidades se manifiestan como posiciones de revisión o asociado de impuestos para Deloitte, posiciones de pasante para Baker Tilly y también Ernst & Young (EY), de las cuales algunas incluyen posiciones de tiempo completo.

Actualmente, Medina se desempeña como presidenta de ALPFA, y planea continuar contribuyendo y manteniendo el legado que le organización le ha dado a ella.

“Realmente me quitó los nervios de pensar en ello como algo que da miedo," explicó Medina.

"Ya no me asusta el navegar estos espacios. No me da miedo tomar mi espacio en estos lugares”, dijo Medina.

Más allá del aspecto de comunidad y ambiente, ALPFA tiene un fuerte enfoque en crear acceso directo con profesionales en áreas comunes. A través de eventos de conexiones profesionales, colaboraciones de previos alumnos, y programas de mentoría. ALPFA trae un ambiente diseñado para calmar la intimidación que muchos estudiantes sienten en estos lugares competitivos.

ichael Martínez prepara café para residentes de Long Beach en el mercado agrícola “Harvest” los sábados por la mañana. Él quiere replicar la calidez de su ciudad natal de Comayagua en Honduras.

Residentes llegaron al mercado para comprar productos agrícolas, artesanías, comida recién hecha y bebidas. En su puesto, “Mijos Martínez”, él sirve café orgánico utilizando granos extraídos de Honduras.

Martínez quería convertirse en el puente para el consumidor promedio de café estadounidense, quienes probablemente están familiarizados con el café colombiano, para probar el café hondureño.

“Yo quería presentar café con lo duro que trabajan los caficultores hondureños para elaborar un producto excelente”, comentó Martínez.

“Honduras es más que toda la mala prensa que recibimos sobre la delincuencia, la inmigraćion y todo lo demás”.

El café hondureño no es tan popular en comparación al café colombiano y otros cafés reconocidos, según Martínez. Él viajó a Honduras y regresó con café en febrero del 2020 antes de que la pandemia golpeara un mes después.

El mercado agrícola es el único lugar donde Martínez vende en Long Beach, mientras comienza a conocer y hablar sobre café con la gente. Durante los últimos cinco años, Martínez ha recorrido el sur de California por su pasión por el café, aterrizando en Long Beach.

El negocio que abrió le recuerda a su niñez cuando tomaba café y hacía el mandado con su abuela en Honduras. Recuerda cuando ayudaba en la tiendita, o pulpería, en Comayagua.

Los fines de semana Martínez iba a la granja con el resto de la familia a pasar el rato y traía productos agrícolas u otros artículos necesarios para la pulpería.

“Yo apoyo las empresas locales que están por el área donde quiera que vaya”, dijo Bonilla. “El café de Martínez es la razón por la que vuelvo”.

Otros locales hondureños sienten esta misma conexión. Martínez los ha recibido en su tienda y lo que no esperaba fue que hubiera una gran comunidad en el área.

Se siente conectado a estos recuerdos y su tierra natal a través del trabajo similar que realiza en el mercado agrícola.

“Eso ha sido una gran ventaja”, dijo Martínez. “Se siente alineado a todo lo que estoy haciendo, como si estuviera destinado a estar aquí, en esta zona”.

Su puesto ofrece opciones frías y calientes incluyendo bebidas especiales como plátano con azúcar morena y café con coco preparado en frío. Clientes también pueden traerse bolsas de café hondureño a casa u ordenarlo en línea en mijosmartinez.com.

El sabor del café brilla con las notas de fruta sin la acidez fuerte junto con un dulzor natural que calma el paladar con cada sorbito. Demostrando su sabor único en comparación con otras marcas disponibles en Long Beach.

Martínez prepara el café con su propia cafetería utilizando la temperatura y cantidad de café molido exactas. Junto con opciones de cafés fríos, él ofrece termos para una opción refrescante.

Nuevos clientes curiosos acerca del café fueron ofrecidos muestras y quedaron asombrados con la calidad y el sabor. A Erica Amaro, una cliente nueva, le encantó el café y el ambiente del mercado.

“No sabe como ninguno de los otros cafés populares que he probado”, dijo Amaro.

El café de Martínez les trajo alegría a los residentes mediante su esfuerzo por recrear el ambiente hogareño de Comayagua. Compartiendo su amor por el café, él es respetado por su compromiso a la comunidad y a su país natal .

“Siento una gran alegría y orgullo cuando la gente me mira y es capaz de conectar conmigo a través de una simple taza de café”, dijo Martínez.

“Es como una belleza sencilla y comunidad que es suficiente para mi”.

onduras Kitchen, ubicado en la calle cuarta este en el centro de Long Beach, ha servido y apoyado a la comunidad hondureña por más de tres décadas. Sin embargo, esta dedicación ha sido interrumpida recientemente por las redadas de inmigración por toda la ciudad.

“Desafortunadamente, la realidad es que se nos dificulta mantenernos a flote porque la gente dejó de venir por miedo a lo que puede pasar”, el copropietario y director del restaurante en Long Beach, Rafael Larios III, explicó.

Además de entregas a domicilio, hay otras maneras en que el público, la comunidad inmigrante y dueños de negocios pueden apoyarse.

“Comprando en estas tiendas, pero también demostrando apoyo en protestas, haciendo lo mismo que Minneapolis hizo”, comentó Alfredo Carlos, Profesor Asistente de Estudios Laborales en la Universidad Estatal de California en Dominguez Hills.

“Si no cierran, pero en vez proveen descuentos para la gente en las protestas, sé con certeza que la gente protestando va a frecuentar ese establecimiento mucho más”, explicó Carlos.

Su primera ubicación abrió en Huntington Park en 1991, cuando Rafael II y Maritza Larios decidieron empezar un negocio basado en la cocina y cultura hondureña.

Después de muchos años y que el restaurante se popularizara por televisar juegos de fútbol, Rafael rentó más lugares para acomodar más gente.

“Esto le hizo darse cuenta dónde le iba mejor a ciertos eventos, uno siendo aquí en Long Beach, porque Long Beach tiene una población grande de comunidad hondureña”, Larios III dijo.

El padre de Larios le compró el edificio a un restaurante hondureño anterior, y abrió la segunda ubicación en 2006.

Aunque este lugar más nuevo es conocido solo localmente, el propio restaurante, al igual que su primera ubicación, son reconocidos nacional y mundialmente.

“Invitariamos a influencers de redes sociales, jugadores de fútbol, entrenadores, cosas diferentes [que] le podría gustar a la gente que aprende sobre su cultura”, comentó Larios III. Algunas personas invitadas al restaurante fueron Lil June Afro Punta, director ejecutivo de la compañía de baile hondureño “Unity Soul Company”, y James Tir, dueño del perfil de Instagram "lbfoodcoma".

Al dejar el ejército y enfocarse en el restaurante, Larios III tuvo algunas interacciones con clientes que lo dejaron queriendo perseguir un nuevo objetivo.

“Cuando asumí el mando de esta ubicación en 2012, había mucha gente que no conocía la comida hondureña, entraban y pensaban que era comida mexicana”, explicó Larios III. Para dar a conocer la diferencia entre esta y otras cocinas latinas, él le resalta platillos exclusivos a Honduras a clientes.

“Algo que siempre enfatizo son las tejadas”, dijo Larios III. “Les explico que se llaman tejadas por el ángulo en el que las cortamos”.

Mientras sumergen a clientes en la riqueza de la cultura aquí en los Estados Unidos, Larios

III y su hermano también dan apoyo en el extranjero al ayudarle a miembros de la comunidad a donar.

La fundación de Larios, empezada en 2020 por la familia, se originó desde 1999, cuando el Huracán Mitch golpeó a Honduras.

En ese momento, los hondureños viviendo en los Estados Unidos estaban devastados, y puesto que no podían mandar suministros esenciales a sus familias, enviaron las donaciones al restaurante.

“Yo recuerdo que nuestra casa, cuando vivíamos en South Gate, estaba llena de donaciones, como montañas”, comentó Larios III. Shirley Andrade, una clienta local frecuente en la ubicación de Huntington Park, encuentra una atmósfera cómoda y ambiental cuando va a comer allí.

“Es muy silencioso, y es un lugar lindo para comer en paz”, Andrade, 42, explicó.

Rafael Larios III sigue ayudando a su gente en Honduras y planea visitar el país en marzo, en colaboración con “Rotary International”, una organización global que apoya a comunidades mediante recursos esenciales con el propósito de reducir enfermedades y pobreza.

“Nosotros, como hondureños, tenemos la obligación de enseñarle nuestra cultura a la gente. Está en nuestra sangre”, Larios III comentó.

EDITORA Querido lector: Científicamente, el proceso de regeneración comienza al dividir un organismo en dos partes antes de reconstruirlo pieza por pieza en una forma nueva y única.

Al igual que muchos de estos organismos, nuestra comunidad ha sido dividida por un tiempo—pero estamos encontrando maneras de reunirnos, más fuertes que antes.

Para el equipo de ENYE, regeneración no solo significa algo nuevo—también significa construir a base de lo que han creado nuestros ancestros, comunidad y colegas previamente.

Incluso el nombre—Regeneración—no es nuevo. El tema de esta edición fue inspirado en el periódico revolucionario de los 1900s publicado durante una dictadura en México.

Las historias en esta edición presentan voces de la comunidad latina que combaten los estereotipos e injusticias activamente. Mientras que es importante para nosotros como equipo, y latines, tener una conversación sobre estos temas incómodos, queríamos celebrar las acciones que están tomando miembros de la comunidad para inspirar a otros a regenerarse de su propia manera.
