Lisbon is a popular destination for tourists, which brings enormous benefits for the economy, but many problems for the inhabitants. One of them is that housing is becoming more and more expensive and is no longer affordable for many, especially the elderly.

Therefore it was the task of this semester project to create a „Home of Generations“: affordable living space for older people, combined with a child day care to bring two generations together.

the rush doesn‘t restrict the older ones in their privacy.

The result is a three-story building embedded in the ground with a walk-on roof as an extension of the garden.

At the street side to the Arco Grande de Cima, you only recognize a one-storied building. From this side you enter the whole complex: the entrance to the residential building and the café, the access to the Child Day Care and to the roof.

If you continue along the path under the ramp, you will come back towards the café, but on the inside of the ramp. Due to a vegetal separation, this is the only way to get to the roof and it should be avoided that curious people get to the private roof garden.

But we are aware that this roof attracts attention and from the street side one will ask oneself what is going on up there. To give everyone the chance to enjoy the top of the building, it is opened to the public once a week, on Saturday during the flea market.

The site for this project is located on a hill next to the Monastery of San Vicente and enjoys an amazing view of the Nacional Pantheon and the Tagus river.

Right now, the plot is surrounded by walls and the monastery on three sides, so the view is blocked for the people on the streets and also from the neighbor buildings.

Our aim is to provide the view for the inhabitants of our Home of Generations and for everybody who lives in the neighborhood.

Something else that we noticed is that there are few green spaces and that, in addition, the hilly location makes them difficult to access for older people.

We try to give them as much green space as possible so that they are motivated to go outside and not to be isolated in their room.

Twice a week there is a flea market right on the doorstep, which takes up the entire street and is very busy. For the apartments, we want to make sure that

Walking down Campo de Santa Clara towards the river, you will discover the full size of the building. The rooms for the elderly are located on the two basement levels and all face the shared vegetable garden. This inner courtyard provides a lot of light for every room of the building.

All public areas such as the kitchen, dining and living room as well as the gym are

located on the ground floor, as there is the least privacy on the street level.

The café is directly on the street under the cantilevered roof. So it is clearly visible and easy to find. To get to the Child Day Care, you have to pass the café and the monastery and go under the ramp of the roof. There you will find the entrance to the kindergarten as well as a second access to the apartments.

A second connecting point is the roof, because on top of it there is also the playground for the children.

Here, the both generations can also play together outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and the view of the river and the Pantheon.

By extending the garden on the roof, another spacious outdoor area for the residents in addition to the inner courtyard with its vegetable patch is created.

As the façade material limestone was chosen because it is a typical stone for Portugal and is often used there. It is timeless and classic and therefore a perfect material to create a Home of Generations. Because a very modern building with extraordinary materials would probably be a bit inappropriate for older people.

What is striking is that the walls jump and change on every floor. This does not create extreme, high walls that look restrictive, but a dynamic, light façade.

This impression is very important to us, because all neighbouring residential buildings are relatively low and we don‘t want to build a monstrous building next to them, which already gains additional height through the roof.

The one-meter high stone slabs are arranged in a regular irregularity. Several narrow slabs alternate with a few wider ones. The joints were created diagonally and the angle varies in the same rhythm as the slab width. This creates an interesting shadow play.

All rooms are located on the first and second basement floors. They are thus protected from the street and enjoy maximum privacy. Only the corridor in the eastern part of the building faces the street and leads to two additional balconies per floor. This is where the residents can stay and meet if they don´t want to go upstairs to the larger common areas. The rooms have no private balconies because we think this is a great danger that some people will only stay there and not be able to socialize. Having shared balconies ensures that the elderlies regularly leave their rooms to stay in contact with the other residents.

Because the Child Day Care is already located in the same building, it was very close to connect the children and the elderly. Between the kindergarten and the dining area of the elderly there is a room where the two generations should come together regularly. They can, for example, make music, dance, do handicrafts or cook together, as there is a kitchen close by.
