Antonia Monique Dapat 12yrs old 5th grade Daegu Elementary Daegu CYS Youth Sports Cheerleader November is Month of the Military Family. In celebration and to honor all of our military families around the world, United States Army Garrison Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Reaction is

featuring the Dapat family. The Dapat family is just one of the many famileis make of the USAG Daegu Child and Youth Services program and we would like to share their story.

At the age of 2, Antonia was diagnosed with Williams Syndrome. Williams Syndrome is a developmental condition that is characterized by mild to moderate intellectual disability or learning problems, unique personalityt characteristics, distinctive facial features, and heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular)

problems. When Doctors informed Antonia’s parents Aprilyn and Renato Dapat that their daughter had pulmonary stenosis, a condition that affects a person’s cardiovascular system, they were devastated.

Antonia would not be able to do any physical activities like normal children. Miraculously, at the age of 8, Antonia she out grew her pulmonary stenosis! This meant that she could now run and play like her

brothers Yosef and Luiz! Antonia’s mom, Aprilyn explained, “Even though the doctors cleared Antonia to participate in Youth Sports, I was still concerned for my daughter’s health and did not allow her to play any sports.” Four years later, Antonia now age 12, while attending her younger brothers’ Yosef & Luiz

soccer practices at Kelly Field, observed Cheerleaders practicing in the distance. Antonia was intrigued,

and it sparked a deep desire to be a part of the cheer team. Antonia begged her mom to sign her up for

cheer. Though it was evident of her daughter really wanted to do this, Aprilyn was still concerned for her daughter’s health. Aprilyn informed her daughter that she didn’t think it’s was good idea. Antonia was persistent in her approach, and finally Aprilyn decided to inquire with the Daegu Youth Sports staff. At

first, aprilyn just wanted to purchase a uniform for her daughter to have just so Antonia could feel like

she was a part of the teams, but after speaking with Sports & Fitness staff, Mr. Giovanni Smith & Chong

Ho Yu, Antonia’s dream of being a Cheerleader became a reality. Aprilyn, credits the Daegu Youth Sports team for reassuring her that we are an all-inclusive program and that the program welcomes Antonia and any other child to participate.

Aprilyn says that, “Antonia routinely reminds me of practice/days and times, she is just so excited to be

a part of the team and she has made a ton of new friends in the process. Before this experience Antonia

would jut roam aroud looking for something to do while her brothers, Yosef and Luiz, played. I know that Antonia always wanted to play and I am so happy that she is now able to do so. This is her first time that

she has ever participated in any type of organized sports and she is enjoying it. We are looking forward to the next opportunity.”

With Antonia Cheerleading and her brother’s Yosef and Luiz playing soccer, this has truly become a

family affair. The Dapat family are happier than ever that now all of their children can participate and feel included in a community that welcomes all!
