The original farmhouse built by Daddy Pete.

We have a story to tell...

From beef cattle to free range turkeys to hogs to dairy cows, Daddy Pete Farms has been part of the farming industry for over 100 years. An active farm since 1907, we are celebrating over 110 years of family farming and are still committed to building upon the rich, farming heritage of knowing and cultivating the true value of a product that most people find useless: cow manure from dairy cows.

Our farm is located in the foothills of North Carolina and was recognized as a North Carolina Century Farm in 2008. The state honors family owned and operated farms for 100 years of continuous agricultural heritage, which helps lead to the rich heritage of the state. Our farm is also honored by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the North Carolina State Fair.

In December of 1907, Joseph Alan Smith bought 102 acres of land in Stony Point, NC, for the sum of $2,500. He built the farmhouse and barns from the timber he gained from clearing the land; and built fences and sowed grass to prepare the farm for raising beef cattle. Molly, Joseph’s wife, nicknamed him “Daddy Pete”.

At one time “Daddy Pete” had two different farms: the present location in Stony Point, NC, as well as a “bluegrass” farm in Wilkesboro, NC. A 25-mile drive with horse and wagon, Daddy Pete hauled the cow manure from the current farm in Stony Point to the bluegrass farm in the hills of Wilkesboro. At that time, cow manure was one of the primary sources for fertilizer to the grasslands, to the crops, and to Daddy Pete’s livelihood on the farm.

Daddy Pete’s son, Sledge, inherited and took over the farm after the death of Daddy Pete. He raised beef cattle and turkeys and served as sheriff of Alexander County from 1950 to 1959. Sledge had a son named Gar Alan Smith who attended N.C. State University where he studied agriculture. Gar was drafted into the military during World War II, and after the war, came back home to Stony Point where he married and had three children. Gar’s only son, Alan, took over the family farm in 1972 and made it a dairy farm.

Alan, who is the fourth generation of Smith family farmers, began exploring the world of composting cow manure in 1988. Daddy Pete’s Plant Pleaser was developed in 1990 and was named after Alan’s great-grandfather who

was nicknamed “Daddy Pete”. The Daddy Pete process begins with composting the manure from the cows on the dairy. This composted manure is then used in the mixes of Daddy Pete’s soil products. Our company continues to build upon the foundation that Alan has established with a passion for excellence, quality you can trust, great customer service, creative product design, and a spirit of innovation.

Alan’s son, Joe Smith, who is the fifth generation of Smith family farmers, helps manage the dairy side of the Daddy Pete operation; and Alan’s grandsons, Colin Smith and Avery Wallace, the sixth generation of Smith family farmers, work at the dairy during their school breaks.

In the words of Alan Smith, owner and President of Daddy Pete Farms, “Farming traditions have been passed down for many generations. There have been failures and successes of ideas to create the good farming practices and products that have stood the test of time. There are traditions that run deep in America, and so many of our ancestors died to provide these traditions for us to enjoy. I believe if you find yourself reading this, it is because you are exercising that love for the soil, for gardening, and for America. Our story and our hope at Daddy Pete Farms is that we will contribute to your experience.”

Alan also shares these words about the farm’s history. “I personally never knew Daddy Pete, but I met him in the stories of my grandfather, Sledge. It was through these stories that I learned the true value of a product which most people would find useless. I was taught that in life the most valuable things are often right before us, sometimes disguised by an uncomely appearance. We simply need eyes to see the value in these things that we normally devalue. Something that seems to be spent or dead to one, brings life to another. Thus it is with Daddy Pete’s Cow Manure and the belief that we help you grow...”

Our Name

Since 1907, the Smith family has been farming 250 acres of land in Stony Point, North Carolina. In 1988, Alan Smith, the fourth generation of the Smith family farmers, began exploring the possibilities of composting the cow manure produced by his dairy cows. As the composting method was developed, he needed a name for the product. His great-grandfather, who originally started the family farm, was nick-named “Daddy Pete”. It is in his honor that we proudly present to you our professional products that we call “Daddy Pete’s Plant Pleaser®”.

Our Mission: to help you grow…one plant, one garden, one business at a time.

DADDY PETE’S COMPOSTED COW MANURE

Since 1988, Daddy Pete’s has developed a quality method for composting cow manure. The result: a composted cow manure that is odor-free and will not burn.

The manure goes through several stages of decomposition. Over a period of 40-60 days, microorganisms convert biodegradable organic matter in the manure to oxidized products. The interior temperature of the cow manure while composting reaches approximately 160°F which is beneficial in eliminating weeds, seeds, and pathogens.

This compost can be applied generously anytime during the year to build a rich, humus soil.

DADDY PETE’S HARDWOOD MULCH

Enhance the look of your landscape with Daddy Pete’s Hardwood Mulch.

Mulch provides a number of benefits to the landscape. From the water conservation standpoint, mulch prevents evaporative water loss from the soil. It also prevents certain soil-borne diseases by acting as a barrier between the soil and the plant. It insulates the roots of plants from extreme heat and cold, and it reduces weed competition by blocking light and by preventing some weed seeds from germinating.

Mulched barriers around trees and structures also prevent mowers and trimmers from causing mechanical damage.

One bag covers approximately 6 sq. ft. when applied 4” deep.
