March 2018

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As I write this message for the March edition of our Parent Newsletter, our school community is processing the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Naturally, we pray for all those affected by the shooting and ask that God bless their journey of healing from loss and injury. On Wednesday, March 14, our students, faculty and staff will unite in prayer for the victims of the Florida tragedy and all those affected by violence. These incidents compel every school to reflect upon its established safety protocols and we at Bishop Amat are no exception. As such, our faculty and staff have been working to review our current evacuation, lockdown and medical response procedures in addition to evaluating our daily protocols regarding campus visitors and other general safety measures. Thank you in advance to parents for their cooperation and understanding as we continue to keep the safety of our school family a top priority. Thank you to all parents who attended the February presentation by Dr. Jerry Weichman on parenting students in a multi-media driven world. The positive response offered by those parents in attendance is very much appreciated. We are blessed to have made arrangements to have Dr. Weichman speak to our student body on Thursday, March 8. In order to accommodate Dr. Weichman’s availability, adjustments must be made to the block rotations and dismissal time on Tuesday, March 6 in which we will now follow a fullday schedule with dismissal at 2:45 p.m. rather than the minimum day dismissal as printed in the school calendar. I do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for parents and students regarding dentist/doctor appointments, etc. that were perhaps scheduled in advance for the afternoon of March 6. Registration for the 2018-2019 school year continues for all current Lancers. Please be sure to read the article enclosed regarding the course registration process and payment of associated fees. Additionally, the tuition and fees schedule for the 2018-2019 school year has been determined as shown on the attached Schedule of Financial Obligations. While every effort is made to keep our tuition and fees affordable for our families, the attached schedule does include an increase of $25 per month for one-student tuition and a registration fee increase of $50 per student. Substantial tuition discounts have been maintained for multiple-student families

Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, March 15 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar to attend, especially if you have specific concerns regarding your student’s academic progress. As a reminder, parents are encouraged to monitor their student’s grades via the online parent portal and communicate with teachers via email whenever questions or concerns arise. For parents of current seniors, graduation season is right around the corner. This month, I begin my visits to senior Theology classes to discuss the various requirements and policies related to graduation in addition to highlighting the events planned for them in the days leading up to the June 1 commencement ceremony. All information provided to senior students will be shared with parents via the graduation packet mailed to homes during the week of March 12. Lastly, as our Lenten journey continues, I call your attention to the article from our Family Faith Formation Program regarding the upcoming Evening of Reflection scheduled for March 22. All Lancer Families are encouraged to participate. Lenten Blessings and a joyous Easter to All, Mr. Beck

Freshmen completed the registration process last month, sophomores need to have their forms turned in to their counselor by March 20, and juniors by April 25. Students who fail to submit completed registration forms to their counselor will be scheduled for classes by their counselor and will be unable to choose elective classes or alternate choices. Also, students who do not register on time will not be permitted to request a schedule correction when schedules are available and classes start in August. Please note:
