Recently, University of California, Davis, researchers revealed the discovery of a genetic mutation across breeds that is responsible for chondrodystrophy (the skeletal disorder leading to shorter legs and abnormal intervertebral discs) in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Being able to identify the cause of this painful condition is the first step to alleviating pain and suffering for dogs at greatest risk.

I had always thought that Dachshunds were not water dogs and that to pass the DTK test one need some sort of arcane secret knowledge transmitted only in High German to the select few. However, my mind was changed by my friend Marie, who had Portugese Water Dogs. She said, “Oh, nearly any dog can learn to swim! And if you can retrieve on land, you can retrieve in water.” She persuaded a couple of us to take a simple introductory water seminar with a PWD person in Connecticut that totally re-arranged my mind about water work.

I have to confess. I am a traitor. A dachshund traitor, that is. Until recently, my household was exclusively filled with loveable, animated dachshunds. I have bred, shown, trained and owned dachshunds for more than 25 years. Throughout those years, my doxies have successfully competed in all venues, earning Breed Championships, MACHs and PACHs in agility, and multiple CD and CDX titles in obedience, and even a few CA (Coursing Ability) titles along the way.

Letters to and from the editor Hi Members and Subscribers, I hope that 2017 was a good year for most of us, but it was bittersweet for many. Dachshund fanciers have lost many long time wonderful friends and family members this last year. Just these past few months we have lost many breeders that made a huge impact on our history. Let’s hope for a better 2018. Oh a brighter note, congratulations to all the winners at the huge Eukanuba Show this year in Florida. Dachshunds did very well!! Kudos to an exceptional breeder: AKC just announced the Breeder of the Year award for Sports. Congratulations to Jean Dieden, Hathor Farm, for being The Breeder of the Year for Sports in Earthdog! Don’t forget that the next issue will be the one before Nationals in Ohio if members are interested in advertising in the newsletter. Thank you to all of those who advertise and especially our wonderful contributors! We still publish extremely affordable litter announcements ($10) - those announcements can be sent in right up until I send the files to the printer. Have a great New Year and I hope your holidays were filled with friends and laughter.

Since the early 1900s, veterinarians have observed intervertebral disc disease, a common cause of back pain, rear limb paralysis and inability to walk, more frequently in dogs with short legs (dachshund, French bulldog, and Pekingese to name a few.) But they couldn’t pinpoint why, until now. “Dogs with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) are 50 times more likely to have this mutation; that‚ an incredibly strong correlation with disc disease” said Danika Bannasch, a veterinary geneticist and the paper’s senior author. Being able to identify the cause of this painful

8

Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

condition is the first step to alleviating pain and suffering for dogs at greatest risk. A dog lover and breeder of Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers, Bannasch has long been fascinated by the makes and shapes of canines.

discs that can lead to paralysis in the worst cases.” Treatment can be quite costly and prohibitive for some. “The disease cost our clients approximately $1.7 million last year on cases that were severe enough to lead to surgery.” Dickinson said. “In addition to the pain and discomfort it causes our patients, it takes an enormous financial and emotional toll on owners.”

Genetic search began with shortlegged breeds

As a geneticist, she is driven to understand what creates those physical characteristics. Her colleague, UC Davis veterinary neurologist Pete Dickinson, has witnessed all too often the correlation of unique shapes and debilitating disease in the neurology clinic. “IVDD is the most common neurological condition we deal with in the clinic” Dickinson said. “It’s the herniation of those abnormal

Bannasch started her genetic search with the toller breed, some of whom also have shorter legs. Her laboratory found a genomewide region of significance on chromosome 12 that appeared linked to abnormal long bone growth. When the group looked for other breeds that shared the DNA sequence in this region, they found that it was in the chondrodystrophic breeds such as beagles, dachshunds and spaniels. Thanks to an extensive biorepository amassed at the UC Davis veterinary hospital over the past 15 years, Bannasch and her team were able to

look at the DNA from cases with IVDD from a variety of dog breeds, which showed the same region was implicated. The hunt for the actual mutation took lots of hard work from DVM/Ph.D. student Emily Brown, who completed her doctoral thesis using this project. At first, the results weren’t revealing. It took meticulous combing through the genetic sequence by eye to detect the presence of an FGR4 retrogene insertion. Once Bannasch realized what they had uncovered, she went screaming down the hall with excitement. “It was kind of like looking for a needle in a haystack,” she said. “I knew it was there somewhere.” The FGF4 retrogene is an important molecule involved in development. When its receptor FGF3R is mutated, it can also lead to dwarfism in humans.

Discovery could help reduce risk of disc disease “There’s a lot of literature that points to chondrodystrophy in dogs as an exciting animal model for degenerative disc disease in people,” said Bannasch, who also holds the Maxine Adler Endowed Chair in Genetics. Now that we know more about why it’s occurring, it might make it a better animal model.” Being able to identify dogs with this genetic susceptibility could provide a valuable tool for owners, breeders and veterinarians for mitigating the risk of intervertebral disc herniation and resulting spinal cord disease. “I am a geneticist but I am also a veterinarian and having the ability to eliminate a disease as painful and debilitating as IVDD is the most satisfying result of my scientific career,” Bannasch said. “This is what research is all about, reducing pain and suffering in animals.” “What we need to know now is the prevalence of this retrogene in all of these breeds,” Dickinson said. “Without that, it’s difficult to establish how to start breeding the condition out. We need as much information as possible to make a plan and help improve the well-being for dogs who suffer from this condition.” Additional UC Davis authors on the paper include Emily Brown (a DVM student who recently completed her Ph.D. in the Veterinary Scientist Training Program), Tamer Mansour, Beverly Sturges, Miriam Aguilar, Amy Young (UC Davis Genome Center), Courtney Korff, Jenna Lind, Cassandra Ettinger (Department of Animal Science), Samuel Varon (2017 DVM graduate), Rachel Pollard, and C. Titus Brown. Terje Raudsepp of Texas A&M University also contributed to the paper. This study was funded by generous donors to the Center for Companion Animal Health at UC Davis, funds from the Maxine Adler Endowed Chair, the National Institutes of Health and a UC Davis Signature Research Genomics grant. Veterinarian Uses Stem Cell Therapy to Keep IVDD Dogs Walking Dr. Steven D. Garner DVM, DABVP is an innovator. When a cutting-edge veterinary treatment is introduced, he is known for setting his sights on mastering the technology if it will benefit his patients. That is why the veterinarian uses stem cell therapy to keep IVDD dogs walking. He is one of a handful of professionals who perform this procedure in a private clinic. When Dr. Garner founded Safari Veterinary Care Centers, near Houston, TX in 1984, his goal was to give pets the level of care they would receive at a top veterinary school hospital. He put together a skilled team and incorporated advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures into his practice. In 2011, Dr. Garner became interested in holistic medicine for his patients. So, with his innovator spirit, he became certified in Canine Rehabilitation. His care centers now include rehabilitation therapy, underwater treadmill therapy, laser treatments, acupuncture and more. Two years ago, his interest in rehab led to a curiosity about stem cell therapies for animals. Dr. Garner researched studies that were going on in the US and in Europe. Then he took a course from a major veterinary stem cell laboratory. He became certified in clinical stem cell procurement and treatment. In 2015, he turned research into realty when he built a state-of-the-art stem cell lab. One of the main goals of Stem Cell Safari is to treat and cure dogs with IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease). IVDD is the most common cause of back pain, herniated or ruptured discs, and hind end paralysis in dogs.

How Dr. Garner uses stem cell therapy to keep IVDD dogs walking Dr. Garner kindly answered questions about the stem cell treatments he performs and how it is helping his patients. Could you give an overview of how IVDD stem cell therapy works? Intervertebral discs are cartilage filled with glycoprotein matrix like a jelly donut is with jelly. Stem cell therapy involves injecting live stem cells into the degenerating disc. The degenerating disc is physically collapsed and the disc matrix material is bulging or leaking from the disc causing spinal cord damage. So, there are two diseases; one is the degenerating disc and the other is the damage to the spinal cord. Stem cells produce more matrix in the disc which holds water re-hydrating the disc cartilage and re-inflating the disc structure.

This reverses the degeneration process for the disc. We use autologous fat derived stem cells (also called adult stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, stromal vascular fraction stem cells) which are from the pet itself so there is little likelihood of any untoward reaction. It is like a skin graft taken from one part of the body and placed on another. There should be no reactions and we have not seen any. Dr. Garner wants everyone to know that he does not use embryonic stem cells. They are associated with tumor formation and are not

being used in animals or humans for therapy. Spinal cord injury from IVDD has 4 stages that are treated differently depending on the stage. Stem cells injected into the spinal cord or into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord enhance regeneration of damaged nerves through many pathways. Describe the perfect candidate for the procedure? The perfect candidate is one that does not yet have spinal cord disease. A pet that is just painful, reluctant to jump or go up or down stairs. Injection of these discs will reverse these changes and prevent or lessen the severity of the disc disease. How far after a spinal injury can you do the procedure? The ideal time after an insult, assuming surgery is not an option, is seven days after the injury. Spinal cord compression causes significant inflammation in the spinal cord and this inflammatory response is fatal to stem cells. So, research has shown that day 7 to day 14 after the event is best for an injection into the spinal cord at the area of compression. Because the stem cell procedure has to be done 7-14 days after an IVDD injury to lessen inflammation, how can he be sure it is the stem cells helping and not the crate rest which is typically prescribed for a dog? The short answer is that you can’t. However, research has shown that stem cells administered in conjunction with surgery actually doubles the pet’s chances of a full recovery. Your website says the stem cells injected build tissue. Does that mean it grows disc material? In the disc the stem cells build matrix and the stem cells secrete proteoglycans which are the continued on next page... Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

9

Continued from page 9... main constituent of the disc matrix. In the spinal cord, stem cells replace dead neuron support cells and give “support to otherwise dying nerves. The nerve support cells (astrocytes and oligodendrocytes) that are replaced make myelin and help regenerate axons. How do you know where to inject the cells? Degenerated discs are narrow and can usually be identified on radiographs but MRI is the gold standard. Spinal cord compression is diagnosed with a myelogram in about 90% of the cases. Many times all the discs are injected. How long have you been using stem cell therapy for IVDD dogs? Over 2 years. How much improvement can people expect to see? Depends on how much damage. Dogs that are painful, have an arched back and just have disc disease are expected to be cured. (Physical therapy is important as well.) Is your work part of a clinical study? No, not a formal study. We do keep medical records and do results analysis and use this to adjust our therapy. It was explained to me that Dr. Garner practices his stem cell usage based on current studies. One of those studies was conducted by researchers who mimicked IVDD damage to the spinal cord of dogs. A balloon catheter was used

10

Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

to pinch off the spinal cord. Half of the dogs were given stem cells and half were not. All of the dogs that received stem cells walked again. The other half did not. A second study found that dogs who received surgery and stem cells for an IVDD injury were twice as likely to have a better outcome than dogs who received surgery alone. Have any of the IVDD dogs you treated with stem cell therapy developed the disease later in life? It was explained that none of the dogs have had future episodes. Not many have returned for MRI’s or other follow-up diagnostics.

Dr. Garner describes the disease process of IVDD In general, we have two diseases at play, disc disease and spinal cord disease. Signs of disc disease are pain, hunched back, reluctance to jump, pain when touched and so on. These signs are treated by treating the disc itself. Injections of stem cells into the disc reverses the degeneration, re-inflates the disc, moderates the inflammation and is a potential cure for the disease. The sooner the better with the stem cell application. Spinal cord disease on the other hand has four stages. 1. The Per-Acute stage which is the first 24 to 48 hours where surgery to decompress the spine is aimed at preventing nerve death. 2. The Acute stage which is the first week after the injury where the damage is done and

the nerves are dying or degenerating due the initial insult causing poor blood flow, inflammation, swelling, hyperexcitability and release of harmful toxic chemicals. This phase is best treated with cage rest and anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDS, DMSO, Minocycline, cold packs, and laser therapy. 3. The Sub-Acute stage is the stage of healing and starts 7 days to 2 weeks after the initial injury and is where stem cells are most beneficial at restoring the nerve function. This stage lasts for about 6 weeks. Physical therapy is very important during this stage as is electrostimulation, acupuncture and so on. 4. The Chronic stage starts at 6 weeks and goes on for up to 2 years. This stage is where the surviving nerves take over the function of the dead nerves. This relearning has a lot to do with rehab, water treadmill and so on. Stem cells therapy along with chondroitinase ABC does improve the outcome of these pets as well. (This is a study from Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine) Dr. Garner and his staff invite pet owners to visit the IVDD Answers Facebook page to learn more or ask questions. https://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/veterinarian -uses-stem-cell-therapy-to-keep-ivdd-dogs-walking/ Note: Stem cell therapy is more commonly used as a treatment for pets with arthritis, kidney disease, and some heart conditions. Dr. Garner is a speaker, teacher and consultant. He was a featured speaker at the AAHA Annual Meeting and at many veterinary schools and conferences. !

The Dachshund Mind by Trudy Kawami salixbrooklyn@aol.com (article from the AKC Gazette)

and Ours

Photo by Jolanta Jeanneney, with Teddy Moritz

f you look at any general book on Dachshunds you will never see the word “biddable.” Biddable conjures up images of compliant Labrador and Golden Retrievers eager to do what ever you want. Instead you see phrases like “stubborn,” “hard-headed” and “independent,” descriptions that set up the would-be Dachshund trainer for frustration, if not failure. Scour the internet and you find the same thing. Adding to the mix, the Dachshund is usually described as a smart dog. So if it’s smart, why isn’t it easy to train? The confusion lies in the differences between biddable and smart. Biddable, which means willing to follow directions, is a characteristic of gun dogs. Guns dogs are selected to follow the hunter’s lead and respond to the shot only when the hunter tells them. They were developed with the use of the long gun, initially a musket, then a rifle, to hunt birds. This activity developed in 17th century Europe. But Dachshunds are hounds, an older canine type, a dog that found the scent of furred game and then chased it toward the hunter or hunters who in earliest times were armed with a throwing stick flung with an atlatl or perhaps a spear. This type of hunting by it very nature requires a more independent, persistent dog, one eager to range out in front on its own.

I

Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

The mental characteristics needed to perform these two tasks, finding and retrieving game birds and finding and chasing furred game, were selected for over centuries. The resulting dogs were sensitive, soft-mouthed retrievers and spaniels (originally bird dogs from Spain) and

In making our own actions simpler and clearer to the dog, and in praising it enthusiastically when the command is understood, we also alter our own behavior – and not just toward dogs more independent hounds eager to move far and wide. So when we see our beloved Dachsies dash after a rabbit or insist there is a mouse in the wall, we see the end result of breeding for a specific mental function as well as physical appearance. (Curiously the most biddable of the three Dachshund varieties, the long, the smooth

and the wire, is the long-hair. Is this perhaps a legacy of the spaniel in its ancestry?) Because of the Dachshund’s mental heritage we need to think like a hound when we want to train a Dachshund. By training I mean teaching it to be a well-mannered pet around the house and perform basic obedience commands. Hounds like variety and do not respond well to extended repetition. Therefore to train a Dachshund you need to make the sessions short and focused. Hounds like action and movement. So use action before and after a “stationary exercise” like SitStay or Down-Stay. Most Dachsies love to tug. A soft braided fleece, a long squeaky plush snake or similar toy will produce action and even better – excitement for training. Hounds love food, so reward the dog IMMEDIATELY after it does the exercise correctly. And on these three concepts, variety, action and reward, we can build a strong connection with our Dachsie. Yes, I can hear the cynical reader thinking, but what about the other part of the title – us? This is where the “magic” of dog owning and training comes in. Training our Dachsies forces us to focus on them alone. We must clear our mind of anything else and see only what is in front of us – our dog. In making our own actions simpler and clearer to the dog, and in praising it enthusiastically when the command is understood, we also alter our own behavior – and not just toward dogs. We become more attuned to differences in posture and gesture, both our own and that of others. Unlike people, dogs give us immediate direct feedback. They may not understand because perhaps we were not clear enough, or gave confusing, contradictory signals, but they don’t lie. They don’t gaslight us, therefore we can trust what they “say.” This trust in turn is good for us as well. The calm focus needed to interact efficiently with your dog takes one away from all sorts of nagging worries and banishes extraneous thoughts. It’s a kind of canine-oriented meditation that is good for the human body as well. Our breathing steadies, our pulse drops a little, yet our perceptions are heightened. To re-write the old equestrian proverb – the outside of a Dachshund is good for the inside of a person!!

e don’t automatically connect Dachshunds and water work in this country, but in Germany it is a given. The German Dachshund Club (Deutcher Teckelklub/DTK) even has a simple water retrieve test as a standard part of their training repertory. And if you can retrieve on land, you can retrieve in water.” She persuaded a couple of us to take a simple introductory water seminar with a PWD person in Connecticut that totally rearranged my mind about water work. I first learned that swimming is a good exercise but one that some dogs do not immediately understand. Comfortable, safe swimming depends on the strength of the lateral muscles that are not always developed in Dachsies. Accustomed to using their short powerful legs for leverage, they need to learn to use their lateral muscles instead. Of course in the long run, strong laterals are essential to the thoracic and lumbar support that every Dachshund needs. So swimming is excellent for Dachshunds in particular. To start your Dachsie swimming you need two things: calm shallow water (Fig. 1) and lots of high value treats. These treats need to stand up to some immersion, so kibble or even BilJac won’t work very well as they get soggy and can dissolve. Hot dogs cut into tiny pieces seem to be the training treat of choice with many Porty people, but other kinds of solid treats can also work. The water must be calm and shallow so that the dog feels comfortable (Fig. 2) and is not splashed over by waves nor rocked off its feet. The water should be still so that the dog does not have to deal with any currents in the beginning. It is also important to remember that the handler/trainer does not try to lure the dog out into the water, but walks parallel to the shoreline merely asking the dog to walk along side and get its feet wet while getting fed treats. At this point you are only in an inch or two of water. After going a few feet along the beach, the handler pivots around and at the same time changes the hand holding the treats. The dog is ALWAYS between the handler and the shore, the dog’s safety zone. (Fig. 3) Note that this is NOT obedience heeling. Do this three for four times and then do something else. Water work is supposed to be FUN, nor boringly repetitive. When the dog is comfortable walking parallel to the shore, which may be immediately or after several exposures, the handler than asks the dog to pivot to the “water” side when the handler turns. This exercise is done in shallow water with the Dachshund walking, not swimming. After several sessions if the dog shows no worry about walking on the “water side,” the

Fig. 2 Fig. 1 handler then moves to slightly deeper water so that when the dogs pivots away from the shore the forelegs start to paddle though the hind legs may still be pushing a bit on the sand. (large picture) This is the point that you really pile on the treats. You want to connect the physical feeling of partially floating - which may unnerve the dog a little - with really good treats. Only after the dog is totally comfortable with partially swimming on both sides as the handler

Fig. 3 wades parallel to the shoreline, is the dog to swim out perpendicular to the shore. Don’t ask for distance nor for very deep water at this point, just dispense lots of fabulous high-value treats. You want to totally connect the concept of swimming (regardless of direction) with good food. The next step is the introduction of games in shallow water, primarily games that lead to retrieving. I find that a dried bird wing zip-tied

Fig. 7 Fig. 6 to a small floating bumper is very attractive to Dachshunds. (You can find these wings at various gun dog supply companies like Lion Country Supply, Cabela’s or Gun Dog Supply.) I tease the dog with the bumper then throw it parallel to the shoreline in the shallows. A thin line tied to the bumper allows me to pull the bumper in little jagged bursts. This irregular pull plus the effect of the feathers usually creates the illusion of a small critter running in

Fig. 8 the shallow water. In short order the dog is grabbing the bumper. (Fig. 5. The dog in the photo was trying to take the bumper to the beach rather than to the handler.) Then you throw the bumper in deeper water but not at any distance and reward, of course, when the dog swims back toward you. (Fig. 6) Don’t try for a formal retrieve; just play a game. Sometimes it helps to play with several dogs together so that there is a bit of competition to get to the bumper

first. (Fig. 7) Now your Dachshund is comfortable in water, even choppy water, and happy to get wet. (Fig. 8) It also has good lateral muscle tone and can be kept in shape during hot weather when strenuous work is out of the question. You may even find yourself seeking out the water in the colder months! (Fig. 9) Yes, that Westie IS going into the surf and that IS Manhattan on the far horizon.! This amendment would include the dog awarded Select Dog or Bitch in the calculation of Grand Championship points for that award. This proposal was brought forward by the AKC Board of Directors based on a Staff recommendation. There was a two-thirds vote in the affirmative and the amendment was adopted. This Passed very easily, it should have been this way right from the beginning. LLS There was a vote on the proposed amendment to Chapter 14, Section 22-A, new paragraph, of the Field Trial Rules and Standard Procedures for Pointing Breeds. The new paragraph would allow for a National Gun Dog Championship for Gordon Setters. The event is limited to walking handlers. The amendment was proposed by the Gordon Setter Club of America and was brought forward with a positive recommendation from the Board of Directors. There was a two-thirds vote in the affirmative and the amendment was adopted. This passed very easily. LLS The final vote was on the proposed amendment to Chapter 11, Section 8-A, of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows - Dog Show Entries, Conditions of Dogs Affecting Eligibility. This amendment would require permanent identification for a dog that is disqualified if it is ever to be considered for reinstatement. Reinstatement would be conducted by AKC staff. Judges would not participate in the process. No reinstatement procedure would take place on the grounds of, or in any building, hotel or venue connected to a dog show or event. would be conveyed to the show superintendent. The amendment was brought forward by the Delegate Dog Show Rules Committee. The AKC Board of Directors unanimously disapproved the amendment. The Dog Show Rules Committee requested that this amendment go forward to the Delegates for a vote, as per the AKC Bylaws. The Chair recognized Sue Goldberg, Delegate for the Lewiston-Auburn Kennel Club and Chair of the DQ Reinstatement Committee spoke as follows: I respectfully move that we withdraw the amendment of Chapter 11, Section 8-A, because after speaking with the Parliamentarian, the enhancements that our committee voted yesterday to add today to benefit dogs, people, and the fancy at large, are not within the scope of what's been noticed to the Delegates. In order to provide a comprehensive amendment, we will resubmit to the Board. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to your approval. The majority of the Delegates voted to withdraw. This is and will be a hot topic now and in the future. It will be at least a year before it will come back. LLS SEPTEMBER 2017 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT At the American Kennel Club, our love of dogs knows no bounds, and our educational mission compels us to share our passion as broadly as possible. Reimagining the AKC Museum of the Dog in its original home in New York City is an exciting opportunity for us to introduce the wonders of the purebred dog to more people than ever before. In 2018, work will begin on a new headquarters for the American Kennel Club at 101 Park Avenue opposite Grand Central Station, a prime location for tourists, visitors and commuters traveling to and from all parts of New York City and beyond. The AKC Museum of the Dog will occupy the first two levels of this imposing class-A building, including the ground floor, and will be a beacon that welcomes the world to America’s greatest resource for and about dogs. Building upon thirty wonderful years in the beautiful Jarville House in Queeny Park near St. Louis, the Museum’s mission will remain a guiding light, even in its future home: the collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of the art, artifacts and literature of the dog for purposes of education, historical perspective, aesthetic enjoyment and enhancement of the human-canine relationship. In this next phase of the Museum’s growth, a new vision will shape its objectives and

activities. The AKC Museum of the Dog will celebrate dogs and their inspiring bond with mankind through its collections, dynamic exhibits and interactive content. The incredible response to events like AKC Meet the Breeds has shown us the value of and public demand for “edutainment” experiences. The new space aims to meet that need while showcasing the treasures of our fancy’s heritage. Certainly, the Museum will feature AKC’s collections of fine art, artifacts and books – broadly recognized as one of the most important resources of its kind. Dog fanciers and clubs will be pleased to find the AKC Library and Archives situated within the Museum as an important vehicle for research and learning. Displays will strike a balance by including both classic and contemporary works to align with interpretive themes. Our objective is that this new learning center will transcend the typical “time capsule” effect of many museums by featuring a vast range of captivating and interactive topics relating to dogs and AKC. Our research has also confirmed that the Museum must serve a broad audience well beyond our core. A central location in one of the world’s leading cultural capitals will allow us to do just that. The Museum will follow a mandate to welcome and serve everyone with an interest in dogs, educate as many people as possible about the joys of the human-canine bond and responsible pet ownership, and promote the AKC’s history and mission. With this fresh approach, the Museum will become the destination for people from all over the world to appreciate and gain a deeper understanding of purebred dogs. A member of our planning committee summarized the goal: “Everyone should come away fascinated and saying ‘I love dogs.’” With a lease recently signed, initial plans for the build-out of the Museum and AKC’s offices are now underway. There will be many opportunities to support the new AKC Museum of the Dog in the months ahead. Look for additional updates throughout the year about ways to get involved as a donor, member, volunteer and more. FINANCE Joseph Baffuto, CFO, presented AKC’s unaudited financial results through the seven months ended July 31, 2017. Total revenues of $41.5 million were 1.1% above budget and 10% greater than 2016. Dog Registrations volume was 2% above budget and 7% higher than 2016, along with Litters processed being 2% above budget and 7% higher than last year as well. Total operating expenses of $36.8 million were 8.6% below budget, but 9.1% higher than 2016 predominately due to increased headcount reflected in Payroll and Benefits costs. YTD Operating income of $4.7 million significantly exceeded both the budget of $816,000 for the seven-month period, as well as the prior year’s recorded actual of $4.0 million. Our investment portfolio reflects unrealized gains on investments totaling $7.3 million year to date, which combined with operating income reflects AKC as a total net income of $12.0 million at July 31, 2017. continued on page 40...

have to confess.

I

So, when I purchased a toy poodle puppy four years ago, my friends thought I had gone insane. Was there a “method” to my “madness”? Why did I suddenly switch to a different breed? It was a big decision in my life, as I always believed that I was the quintessential “Doxy Lady.” To be honest, as a dog trainer however, I had always aspired to earn the coveted UD (Utility Dog) title in obedience competition. I considered it like attaining the elusive “brass ring.” I watched friends reach that goal, but never with a dachshund. The only times that I saw dachshunds in the Utility ring was at our national specialty show, where only one or two dachshunds - from other parts of the country- would compete at that top level to which I aspired. To earn the Utility Dog title is evidence that your dog has been successful in the most challenging class offered by the AKC. Over the years, while I continued training only dachshunds, I became convinced that this top level could never be achieved. I thought long and hard about what was keeping me back from getting to the next level in obedience and earning the UD title. The Utility exercises require the dog to watch the handler for signals 20 feet across the room. Lots of attention is required. Since most dachshunds are natural ground-sniffers, could I ever get a dachshund to focus on me? Could I get precision in heeling, instead of a dachshund lagging 10 feet behind me? And then there was the directed jumping, known as “go-outs.” This exercise requires the dog to run away from you until you shout “sit!” My initial attempts at teaching these exercises to my dachshunds were disheartening at best. The question that was prominent in my mind was always, IS IT ME? Or is it the fact that I am exclusively training dachshunds? Time and again, friends would say that dachshunds could not be trained at the highest levels and that I should give it up. I was led to believe that the best title that I could ever expect to achieve on a dachshund would be the CDX. (The Companion Dog Excellent title is the first advanced title after the novice level CD.) Only a handful of dachshunds have earned the UD, UDX and the coveted OTCH. I started to believe that this particular brass ring was beyond my grasp. So several years ago, I convinced myself that I could not succeed at high levels in obedience

Utility Obedience Training: Reaching for the “Brass Ring” By Karen R. Scheiner

with a dachshund. Rather than figure out the solutions for my dachshund, I resorted to another breed. What I have learned from this experience is that it’s all about the training, and not so much about whether you have a dachshund or any other breed of dog. And so, after starting to train a toy poodle, only then did I figure out the training solutions that would be incredibly successful for my dachshunds! I am sharing this information with you now, so maybe you won’t have to take the circuitous training route that I have traveled.

FUN IN THE RING In training for Utility competition, there are a myriad of components to each exercise that the dog must be taught. I will assume that if you are training at this level, then you have the basics down. Nevertheless, expect to encounter many training problems along the way. Some of these might be the dog lags in heeling, the dog doesn’t do the signals from a distance, the dog doesn’t want to stay still for the moving stand, or the dog doesn’t understand the go-outs. I have wrestled with all of these common problems, initially thinking there would be no solution with a dachshund. It is NOT hopeless, just because the solution doesn’t immediately smack you in the head! Taking time to carefully consider the problems, a change in training techniques and in my attitude have made all of the difference. To begin with, training obedience must be FUN for you and the dog. If it is not fun, then it won’t be successful. If you and your dog aren’t having a great time practicing the exercises, then you are setting up to fail. If you train by routinely running through each Utility exercise every time, then the dog will become bored and lose interest in the program. The trick is to use toys and games and break up each exercise into individual component parts. Use food only sparingly. Make it fun with toys and games, so that food does not become your crutch.

HEELING AND SIGNALS CAN BE FUN! When I teach heeling, I do it with a toy pressed under my left arm. The dog watches, knowing the toy is there, eagerly waiting for it to drop to the floor! Take a few steps with the dog watching and let it go. After the toy drops, I may have a “tug” with the dog. Once the dog is proficient at heeling and staying at my side, I often tether him to my jeans. I can then work on heeling, with no leash. To create a tether, use braided, heavy embroidery thread which length should match the measurement from the dog’s collar ring to your belt loop. Attach small leash hooks on either end of the braided thread. One hook will attach to your belt loop and the other to the dog’s collar (See photo). If his collar is

loose and comfortable, he knows he is in correct heel position. If he lags or forges, the collar will become uncomfortably taut and the tether will be self-correcting. One of the most challenging exercises in Utility is the signal exercise. It is called “signal” exercise because the handler is not permitted to speak to the dog at any time. Once you tell the judge that you are “ready,” it’s all hand signals from there until the exercise is finished. (There is no leash on the dog in any of the Utility exercises.) It is a fairly long exercise, with a heeling pattern, one or two halts (dog sits), right turn, left turn, fast and slow. After a lengthy heeling pattern, the judge directs you to “stand” your dog at the far end of the ring, then “leave” your dog. The dog is to stand and watch the handler walk to the other end of the ring. Before you even get to signals, you need the dog to really WATCH you as you leave him. So in training, one of the best ways to teach that “watch” is using a favorite toy. I normally walk a few feet away, bend over holding the toy between my legs and let the dog race toward the toy. (See photo.) The minute he grabs it, he gets to play “tug” with me. My dogs all love this game and it is very motivating. The next time he is set up for signals, he doesn’t take his eyes off me, because he doesn’t want to miss the tug game, which may or may not come! He never knows.

TRAINING GLOVES – MORE FUN Toys are great for other exercises as well. In training the pivot for the directed retrieve (ie. gloves), I usually have a toy under my left arm. Whether it’s a right pivot for gloves one or two, or the left pivot for glove three, the dog is anticipating that I will eventually throw the toy, causing him to be very responsive to my movement. I always take an assortment of favorite toys when I go to a training session. The dog usually tells me which toy he wants to work with. We may start with the squeaky chicken in heeling, and then a crackly snake for the gloves. Have different types of toys so the dog doesn’t ever get bored. Training the pivot by using a golf disc or a frisbee tells the dog where to stand. If he understands that his front feet must remain on the disc, when you move around, he will rotate his hind legs, but keep the front feet next to you on the disc. (See photo.)

DIRECTED JUMPING FUN My favorite Utility exercise to train is the Directed Jumping, more colloquially known as the “go outs.” This is considered the Utility “recall” exercise. It is actually the opposite of what most people train their dogs to do. For example, in the Novice recall, the dog is told to sit and stay while the handler crosses the room. The handler then turns and faces the dog, and

calls the dog to “come.” In contrast, in the first part of the Utility recall exercise, both the handler and the dog are facing the other end of the ring. Instead of calling the dog to “come”, the dog has to be taught to run away! The handler can say “go!” and the dog must run straight, until the handler yells “sit!” The dog must then turn and sit in the center of the ring. When I teach directed jumping, the dog learns to love to run to the stanchion at the other end of the ring. First I teach him to “look!” at the stanchion. Start close to the stanchion and, over time, gradually move the dog back to full ring distance. That skill may actually take several weeks until he is looking at the stanchion for at least a minute or two. Sometimes there is a toy placed on the floor next to the stanchion. After I send him, I tell him to “sit!” Once he sits, I tell him, “get the toy!” Rock Star loves to grab his toy and proudly prance around the ring with it. Other times, I will tell the dog to “hit it” when he gets to the end of the ring. He has learned to gleefully jump up, putting his front paws on the stanchion. (See photo). It’s a great way to teach full distance in the ring. Occasionally I will throw food or his toy after he jumps on the stanchion. I initially learned about the “hit it” exercise from a book called Go Bop! by Laura Romanik, who trains top shelties. The book is a step by step approach to teaching go-outs; it is available for purchase from the author on-line. I found this book to be an invaluable training resource.

SCENT DISCRIMINATION IS EASY AND FUN Of all of the Utility exercises, I have to say that teaching scent discrimination to a dachshund is a piece of cake! They are real naturals for this exercise because of their extraordinary scenting ability. I initially teach this exercise using Janice Demello’s Around the Clock method. You can find her specific directions on-line. Starting out with a small amount of Cheese Whiz on the scented article, the dog learns to love to go to the article pile because he gets a treat. In the Around the Clock method, the articles are strategically placed like the numbers on a clock, so that the dog gets used to searching in a circular path for the correct scented article. In a few weeks, the cheese is eliminated and the dog reliably locates the scented article. You can also practice articles with the dog on a flexi-lead. That will make it easier to correct him if he chooses the wrong article. If he is correct, you can add drive by pulling him toward you, and throwing food or a toy as he bounds back to you with the article.

LIMIT YOUR TRAINING SESSIONS You might consider working on only one or two exercises for an hour training session. Don’t try continued on next page... Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

SUCCESS AT LAST – THE BRASS RING!

continued from page 27 to cram everything into one session, as it will overload the dog. For example, on the glove exercise, teach the dog to pivot while you hold the toy under your arm. Let it drop only after a successful pivot. Give the dog an opportunity to play with the toy. Toys that squeak or crackle are really engaging. After practicing the pivot for a while, send the dog to get the glove, then turn and run away and let him chase you with the glove in his mouth. Or, if you have problems getting fronts, when the dog is bringing back the glove or an article, throw food or a toy between your legs so he becomes more motivated and has to chase it. The next time, no food or toy, and see if he has a better front. It is important that the dog understands all parts of every exercise, so don’t rush through training. You want the dog doing everything correctly, so he earns a reward. That is the only way it will be fun for him!

SUMMARY AND FINAL SUGGESTIONS As if I haven’t said this enough, the first rule in training in obedience is always: Make it Fun! In prior columns, I have written about training puppies with toys. (See “Choosing & Training Your Performance-Bound Puppy,” Dachshund Club of America, Spring, 2014). Tugging and asking the dog to retrieve the toy are the top of my list. That interaction between the owner and dog carries a long way into showing in the obedience ring. Toys are often better to use instead of treats, because they are easier to take away when you want to start competing. The toy

can be thrown after each exercise, so the dog gets excited and motivated. When I am at an obedience trial, I always take several of Rock’s favorite toys. He needs to be excited about going into the obedience ring with me. This is important for any dog, but critically important for a dachshund. Rock and I usually choose one toy together, and I “rev” him up by playing a game of tug, before we go in the ring. Admittedly, it wasn’t always like this with him, in fact, I had altogether given up at one point, and was even thinking about placing him in a “pet” home, when he refused to pick up the dumbbell for the Open class. Suffice it to say, patience, perseverance and my new attitude in training, made a huge difference which has paid off in spades!

The American Kennel Club Announces Advanced Recognition Levels For Breeders of Merit New levels designed to recognize the dedication of breeders who contribute to the sport. The American Kennel Club is pleased to announce the launch of Advanced Levels of Recognition for Breeders of Merit. The program is being introduced to provide recognition to those long-term, successful breeders that have produced numerous titled dogs. Dogs titled prior to the launch of the program will be grandfathered in, provided the titles can be verified. “Many breeders have demonstrated a long-term commitment to breeding quality, healthy puppies and to mentoring new puppy buyers,” said Mari-Beth O’Neill, Vice President of Sport Services. “These breeders have done so much for their breeds that the AKC is proud to recognize their commitment and success.” Advanced Levels of Recognition will be available to those breeders the have met the following standards: • Have qualified and are enrolled as a Breeder of Merit • Can provide proof of Parent Club required health testing on parents of their most recent litters • Have demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that their puppies are 100% registered with the AKC

In October, 2017, I finally achieved what I previously was convinced was an impossible feat. My dachshund, Rock Star, successfully earned the Utility Dog title, with brilliant performance of all of the exercises!! With a lot of practice and hard work, there also comes relief and a huge sense of accomplishment. I am now realizing that it is not the breed at all. Dachshunds are extremely intelligent, although admittedly not naturals for the obedience ring. With the right kind of training, dachshunds can be successfully trained, even for high levels of obedience! My purpose in this column is not to “brag” on Rock Star, but simply to demonstrate that what I, and many others, thought was impossible, ultimately became a reality. If you are reading this, and have been convinced that your dachhund cannot accomplish this title, then think again. These are some suggestions to start, or shift, your training. Hopefully after reading this article, you will find solutions to reaching your brass ring in obedience with your dachshund. As Dorothy, in the Wizard of Oz, proclaimed, “If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard.” In other words, there really is no need to find another breed when you have that wonderful dachshund already in your home. If you are wondering about my toy poodle, well let’s just say that he and my dachshund, Rock Star, both having earned a UD, are now vying for the UDX title! Actually, in the last few competitions, the dachshund amazingly beat out the poodle with slightly higher scores! So in my house, it’s now a competition between the two of them; we’ll see who wins that UDX first. Frankly, my money is on the dachshund! !

Breeders will be recognized at the following levels: Breeder of Merit (current) Minimum of 4 titled dogs Breeder of Merit – Bronze Minimum of 10 titled dogs with at least 5 prefix-titled dogs Breeder of Merit – Silver Minimum of 25 titled dogs with at least 15 prefix-titled dogs Breeder of Merit – Gold Minimum of 50 titled dogs with at least 30 prefix-titled dogs Breeder of Merit – Platinum Minimum of 100 titled dogs with at least 60 prefix-titled dogs The Advanced Levels of Recognition program launches on November 7, 2017. Breeders will be acknowledged on a breed specific basis. The Advanced Level of Recognition application can be found at http://www.akc.org/dog-breeders/breeder-of-merit/. The program encourages breeders to introduce new owners to the multitude of opportunities that are offered by AKC sports. The Advanced Level of Recognition will be displayed on Registration Certificates and Marketplace listings. “This new program will have a positive influence on all AKC sports,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of Sports and Events. “Breeders have a meaningful impact on our sports through their quality breeding programs and the guidance and encouragement they provide to new dog owners. The Advanced Levels of Recognition provide a well-deserved acknowledgement of their commitment. ”

This program is sponsored by Royal Canin USA. To learn more about the Advanced Levels of Recognition for Breeders of Merit, please visit www.akc.org/dog-breeders/breeder-of-merit/.

DCA BOARD MEETING MINUTES Sunday, May 28, 2017 Crowne Plaza Hotel , Louisville, KY Meeting opened at 8:27 a.m. In attendance: Walter Jones, Fran Colonna, Bob Wlodkowski, Ken Levison, Vicki Spencer, Cheryl Shultz, Paul Martin, Connie Fisher, Dan Burke, Kathy Lockyer, Deneice Van Hook, Anne Carson, Ken Hagmueller, Cyndy Senff, Georjan Bridger and Larry Sorenson Absent: Carl Holder and Charlotte Borghardt

President’s Report: none Recording Secretary: Vicki Spencer reported Jerry Cerasini has agreed to chair the Good Sportsmanship Committee for 2017. She also reported Ginger Prentiss will oversee the junior exhibitors for DCA 2017. Since Ann Gordon’s last dachshund column for the AKC Gazette was this past February, she stated a replacement is needed. After a discussion, it was decided to select someone to be in charge of heading this committee and organize guest columnists. A motion was made and adopted for Trudy Kawami to head the AKC Gazette Column committee. Board members submitted the following names of DCA members willing to write columns for the Gazette: Anne Schmidt Trudy Kawami Patt Nance Judy Anderson A motion was made and adopted to publish the Gazette article on the DCA website.

Corresponding Secretary: Cheryl emailed the Board members a Report consisting of correspondence beginning January 24, 2017 to May 10, 2017. There were two Action items. • 3-31-17 Email from AKC’s Neil Singer inviting club nominations for the AKC 2017 Lifetime Achievement Awards in 3 categories: Conformation, Companion & Performance events. Submissions to AKC due 6-13-17. No nominations were made. • 5-4-17 Email from Michael Canalizo, AKC Event Management Consultant, announcing an opportunity for National Breed Clubs to host a Designated Specialty (National or Regional) or Supported Entry at the 2017 AKC National Championship or future events, presented by Royal Canin. He requested a response from our club by July 1, 2017 if there is intent to support the 2017 event or future events. It was noted DCA already supports this.

No action was taken by the Board at this time. Standard Revision – Ken reported the next step will be to send out voting ballots to all members. Since our by-laws require the Board to make a recommendation, a motion was made and adopted that the Board recommends members to vote their own conscious. Ken will create a ballot with the Board’s recommendation.

AKC Delegate’s Report: Larry Sorenson shared that the calculations of Grand CH point will be voted on at the next Delegate meeting and he recommended a yes vote. Larry explained this change will bring the counting of point in line with the way all CH points are counted. Without objection, Larry was instructed to vote yes.

Standing Committees: Brochure Committee Trudy Kawami emailed a report to Board members concerning the booklets and brochures now offered. No action was taken by the Board at this time. Additional titles for the ROM program Vicki Spencer sent an email to Ann and Bob Wlodkowski requesting their input concerning adding Agility and Tracking Championships to the ROM program. Their main concern was the complications that ensue when adding additional titles to an established program. Discussion followed. Without objection, a committee will be formed to explore the possibility of developing a Performance Event ROM. Ken Hagmueller agreed to head the committee.

TAC recommendations concerning Absolute: Vicki Spencer reported she received an email from Tracy Freeling requesting more time for TAC to consider this. She will have a report for the Board at the October meeting. Board went into Executive Session at 8:52 to discuss Spring 2017 Membership Applications. Board reconvened at 8:58.

Membership Georjan Bridger. Spring 2017 applicants: The following people were voted into membership: Kyle and Jordin Wallis Amy Creel Kristen and Joseph Gerling Debbie Melgreen Sandra Alexander Frances Woods Daniel and Mary Stolz Sue Rucker

Treasurer’s Report:

Challenge Trophy report

Ken Levison – Ken passed out copies of the 990 form which has been submitted to the IRS. He reported DCA having $414,390.27 in assets. He reported our major expenditure is the Newsletter. Lynne had emailed the Board with her concern that advertising revenue is down.

Ann Carson reported we will need someone to take over the duties of this committee after DCA 2018. Gayla and Gordon Stueber are willing to oversee the trophies for the upcoming DCA, but will need someone to take over after that. Connie Fisher agreed to be in charge. Brian

38

Dachshund Club of America Winter 2017

Owen will work with Connie to acclimate her to the duties. Paul Martin reported that a trophy honoring DCA Junior winners has been found and he and Monica have updated it.

Versatility Committee Vicki Spencer reported she sent an email to Julie Couch asking her opinion on the recommendation for including additional qualifications for the DCA Versatility Award including but not limited to: Earthdog: Endurance Dog Agility: PACH and PAX Obedience: Optional and alternate titling classes Julie Couch responded in an email that she was agreeable to including these titles, but more information was to follow. Denny Van Hook volunteered to contact Julie to gather more information and will report back at the October meeting.

Special Committees: DCA 2019 National Specialty: Greater Portland Dachshund Club has withdrawn its bid to host DCA 2019. Carl is looking into returning to Purina Farms. Kathy Lockyer suggested a location in Topeka KS. Cheryl Shultz reported the Dachshund Club of Santa Ana Valley may be interested in hosting 2019. Update on pedigree research transition project: Cyndy Senff reported the Pedigree Program was off line for a short while due to the website host provider being sold, but it is now up and running thanks to Charles DeLashmutt and Robert Grimes responding to the problem. Cyndy was able to talk to Robert Grimes who is the person the Boltons have been sending the current information to for updating on the DCA site. Robert agreed to take the most current version from the Bolton’s and update it online (last update was January 2015). Robert also will send this current data in a csv file to Cyndy for mapping into PedWin, DCA’s new software. Once that is up and working Cyndy will take over doing the monthly data entries. The new software, along with the free interface that the PedWin programmer has recommended, will allow Robert Grimes to be phased out of the equation per his request. Charles and Robert are in the process of putting the pedigree database domain within the actual DCA domain.

New Business: Recognition of Committee Chair Volunteers – Vicki Spencer would like to see DCA recognize our many volunteers by placing a Thank You in the Newsletter. Without objection, Vicki will gather names of volunteers to be placed in an ad in the DCA Newsletter. DCA Facebook page – Vicki Spencer noted DCA has a Facebook page and was curious as to who set it up and how it could be used. After a discussion and without objection Cyndy Senff will try to locate the administrator and have it deleted. DCA Voting for Conformation Judges – Cheryl

had a few questions concerning the voting process. She asked since members will be able to vote by variety, should judges be nominated by variety? The consensus was no. Members will send in a judge’s name without stipulating a variety. A ballot will be deemed illegal if more than one judge is nominated for the same variety. Members may vote for only one judge per variety. Alternates will be decided by selecting the second highest vote getter in that variety. If there is a tie, the President will break the tie. The deadline for all judges, Conformation, Field Trail and Earth Dog, will be the same. Without objection, the nomination cards for all judges (conformation, field trial and earth dog) will be sent out with the due reminders. A motion was made to use the post mark on the envelope when there is a date due by. Motion did

not pass. DCA trophy plan wording for a condensed premium list – Ken Hagmueller suggested there be a one line statement in the premium list saying this club supports the DCA trophy plan. This should cut down the number of pages needed for a premium. Without objection, Ken will work with Sheila Parish to create the proper wording. DCA National premiums – Cheryl Shultz suggested the Board require host shows to post the DCA logo on the front of the premium list. After a discussion, Cheryl was instructed to add to the hosting guidelines a strong suggestion the DCA logo appear on the front. New title rosettes in obedience and rally for DCA – A motion was made and adopted to offer new title rosettes in obedience and rally at DCA.

Vicki will contact David Temple to let him know they need to be offered in 2018. Denny Van Hook will remind Lynne Dahlén to send medical articles to both her and Dan Burke for review before they are published in the Newsletter. Drs. Denny Van Hook and Dan Burke will report at the next meeting on their recommendations for required genetic testing of dachshunds. It was noted that we don’t have definitive tests for some of the concerns we have with our dachshunds. Our next meeting will be held October 14, 2017 in Columbus, OH. Location to be determined at a later date. Meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m. Submitted by Vicki Spencer

LLS AKC Trick Dog Program Status Report The staff provided the Board a status report regarding the new AKC Trick Dog program. The AKC Trick Dog program was launched on May 1, 2017. There are four levels of titles: • Novice (TKN) - Dogs perform 10 novice tricks. Examples include: bark on cue (“speak”), high five, crawl, and jump through a low hoop. • Intermediate (TKI) - Dogs perform 10 intermediate tricks. Examples are: carry a basket, rollover, jump through handler’s arms, and wave good-bye. • Advanced (TKA) - Dogs perform 5 advanced tricks. Examples include: take a bow, circle right/left, play dead, cover your eyes, open mailbox/refrigerator and take out an object. • Trick Dog Performer (TKP) - Each dog does at least 10 intermediate and advanced tricks put into a routine. The response to the Trick Dog program has been overwhelming. As of July 14 (11 weeks since launch), we have received over 6,500 title applications. Since the launch of the Trick Dog program, there has been a noticeable increase in new CGC Evaluator applications per month. The number of currently approved Evaluators is at an all-time high. over 11,500 Evaluators acting as advocates for the AKC. The program has also succeeded in attracting new dog owners to the AKC, as indicated by the fact that the trick dog title is the only title that 30% of these dogs have earned. More opportunity for puppies to participate in dog shows. • 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy Competitions (BPUP) Allowing BPUP Events in Conjunction with BMatches The Board reviewed a recommendation from Staff to allow 4-6 Month Beginner Puppy Competitions (BPUP) to be held on the same day and at the same location as the club’s Conformation B-Match. Current BPUP Regulations require that the competition can only be offered at a point show. Following a motion by Ms. McAteer, seconded by Mr. Carota, it was VOTED (unanimously), to consider the matter at this meeting, waiving the usual notice requirements. Following a motion from Ms. McAteer, seconded by Ms. Biddle, it was VOTED (unanimously), to modify the BPUP regulations to allow clubs to hold the competition with either a point show or a Conformation B Match that is held at the same location. This recommendation is a change to Regulations and is effective September 1, 2017. Some information from the Board Minutes. LLS

LITTER BOX TRAINING FOR PUPPIES 101 by Anne Schmidt So you have a litter of puppies coming? Be it a litter of 1 or of 9, caring for the elimination needs in a sanitary way can be a lot of work as you know. I hope to make this unpleasant task a bit easier for you in the future. If you start off with the right introduction and a little persistence, you can train your puppies to eliminate on a tray with pellets and save yourself a lot of work! This is especially helpful with a winter litter. Get rid of the pee pads; puppies just like to rip them up anyway! You will need a few supplies that are reasonably priced or you can improvise with something you already have. The Tray/Pan: Because doxie pups have such short legs, the tray is very important if you want them to be able to get into it!! I start with a boot tray or lid to a large Rubbermaid container (something relatively flat) and graduate to a rabbit pan or washing machine drain pan, both the rabbit pan and wash machine pan have a 2.5 inch lip which works for my pups once they are 4 weeks. Another alternative is a concrete mixing tub or old Rubbermaid container and cut down one side for an entrance. Whatever you choose, make sure you can wash and sanitize as necessary. The bigger the litter, the bigger the tray you should have, or you may want two. The Pellets (Litter): It is always safety first with the type of pellets and always assume that the pups will at least “taste” it, so you want something that will not cause blockage or GI upset. I have found the best pellets to be 100% recycled Paper Pellets (unscented) and Horse Alfalfa pellets. Both of these are safe if the pup eats them! Do not use clumping cat litter or wood (pine) pellets as these are dangerous to the pups. The Training Technique: I start at 2½ weeks, preferably a few days before starting to supplement with your weaning mixture. They usually do not need mom to stimulate them to eliminate at this age. At the beginning of training it is extremely important that the bed and litter box are right next to each other as puppies eliminate almost immediately after waking up. I put the boot tray down with a potty pad and just a few of the pellets to start. At this stage I use the potty pad so I can see if they have gone (urinated), and I put down just a few so they can get used to the smell and feel under their feet. After they have been sleeping awhile (with momma out) wake them up

and put them on the tray with litter. Keep this up a few days and they will start to go there on their own when they wake up. I generally will leave the boot tray down until 4 weeks; then put in the larger washer drain pain and add enough pellets to cover the floor of the pan, do not over fill the pan as it will just fall out and make a mess. At this point I still keep it right next to the bedding area. When they are 5 or more weeks you can move to a location farther away. I am in with my puppies a lot and remove the stool as often as possible; I use a cat scoop to make this an easy cleaning process. The pellets will expand when they get wet with urine and eventually break down somewhat. You can add more litter as it breaks down or gets smelly, but at least once a week totally dump and sanitize the pan. As a little variation on this process, I have found that if you prefer to keep using the potty pads, the puppies usually will not play and tear them up if you put some of the litter on top of it. Just put the potty pad in your larger litter pan or in a clamp down holder made for the pads, and put about ½ cup (a handful) of litter on it, that way you can change out the pads more frequently if you don’t want to deal with the larger tub filled with pellets. A little time to start will save you a lot of time in the end. Cost: • 28˝x 30˝ Washing machine drain pan, $16 Menards • Alfalfa pellets – 50# at feed store, about $12 • Yesterday News pellets – 30#, about $16 • Cat litter scoop – Dollar store item No tracking of poop all over and cleaner puppies – Priceless!!
