Preface

Preface It is with a sigh of relief that we shift the burden of this volume from our shoulders to our gentle readers.

We are proud to present this booklet generally comprise the research and findings delivered by students of UCSI University, Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Interior Architecture Semester 5 Batch 07-2022. This booklet is the essence of 34 students’ diligence for the past 4 months (January - April 2022) and acts an important reference point for them to develop their final year project.

This booklet is also completed under the guidance of 1 studio master: Ms. Seri Intan Binti Md Sidik, and 2 assistant lecturers: Ms. Nurul Anida Binti Mohamad and Ms. Apple Wong Koi Yi. Special thanks to the management of Wisma City Centre for conducting the interview with the students and the residents there, in which allowing them to obtain more personal and insightful information besides online researches. In this booklet, there contains necessary information which will aid the students’ design development and understanding of the site, as it is crucial for them to know more about different parts of Malaysia should they ever initiate any future projects here.

@ Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur In the center of Kuala Lumpur, there is a street called Jalan Alor. It's a one-of-a-kind culinary destination. There is little movement during the day, but as soon as the sun goes down, the street turns into a lively beehive. When you walk down the street, the city takes on a new personality.

It was once known as a red light district and remnants of those activities still exist.

However, after several face lifts, the street has literally become a food haven.

Apart from being a food street, it is also full of various street arts in the deserted back alleys. There is a wonderful feeling of being in a colorful world.

Some of the best food Malaysia has to offer is not in overpriced hipster restaurants, but on the sidewalks, in rows of hawker stalls. At Jalan Alor, these stalls will occupy both sides of the road,

represents

Malaysia. It's not just a place for locals, foreigners often come here for unique dishes that they most likely won't be able to return home.

June will have the lowest rain precipitation, while November has the highest rain precipitation.

Yearly Overall Data (2021) Average temperature for the year 2021 is 25.7℃.

February has the most sun hours (8 hours), while November has the least sun hours (6.5 hours).

The wettest month is November with a total of 20 rainy days, while the driest month is February with only 13 rainy days.

The humidity value of each month is similar with an average of 85.75%.

Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur Built in the 1980s, Wisma City Tower is a mixed use development at Jalan Alor which holds the title of ‘Kuala Lumpur’s Food Heaven’ with plenty of cheap and authentic ASEAN hawker food. Being located in the Golden Triangle of Kuala Lumpur (Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Imbi, Jalan Raja Chulan), Wisma City Tower is at a strategic location and was once the landmark of Jalan Alor.

The street is nocturnal, being alive at night with bright lights, loud noises and crowded street whereas dead in the morning when most of the hawkers are closed.

According to the assistant general manager of Wisma City Tower Management: Objectives: Helps to solve the problem from residents of Wisma City Tower and maintain a good community in Jalan Alor.

Things looking forward: A gather place for cultural exchange and getting more community activities in the future.

Views to the site The facade and rear of Wisma CIty Tower can be spotted from afar, however the sides of Wisma City Tower can only be spotted when approaching near the site.

Views to the site Wisma City Tower has a panoramic unobstructed view of Kuala Lumpur except for view to Jalan Tong Shin which is blocked by the walls and antenna.

There are variety of materials of different texture around the site which ranges from rough to smooth .

How long you have been living here?

A: Since 1993

Can you share your daily routine in this area?

A: Mostly are just collecting rental from the tenant and gathering with friends.

Why do you prefer to live here? Is it because of the facilities of the building, Is it because of the community or the contextual facilities such as public transportation and malls?

A: I moving at 1993 until now and the reason I think will be Jalan Alor have been the heart or the center of Kuala Lumpur from the past until now. Without a doubt that back to the time that the public transportation was convenience but now I don’t think so.

How do you feel about the general facilities at this building?

A: We don’t have any facilities in this building so I don’t know how to commend.

Is there any suggestion to improve the current facilities at this block?

A: Without a doubt, must be the carpark.

Do the community at this block has the gathering space?

If you have a chance to have a community space, what are the space needed by the community? eg: multipurpose hall, playground, education space, community lounge or activities space? Can you give some suggestions?

A: If possible, a multipurpose park will be very helpful.

The concept came from the inspiration of Asian culture architecture that uses arches in their buildings, with that came the idea Asian contemporary

AGGREGATION THE FORMATION OF A NUMBER OF THINGS INTO A CLUSTER The Concept refers to gather, connect and unite the community, to build a strong bond between them, just like the condensation of tiny little droplets into water, and becoming a waves.

THE LIGHTCATCHER Wisma City Tower located in Jalan Alor which is the one of the famous food street in Kuala Lumpur. With the changes of the time, barriers of cross-cultural communication among foreigners and locals lead to many communication problem. Besides, aging problem getting serious in Jalan Alor, lack of youth participation in traditional Chinese art and craft. At the same time, elderly who living here do not have enough and proper recreation space. This will make Wisma City Tower fast falling into decay.

The aims of the LIGHTCATHER is learning the common language in Jalan Alor which is Chinese, exploring on the art & craft of Chinese culture and also provide a recreation space for the community. Which is a space that community can explore on Jalan Alor’s cultural and inheriting with it.

DESIGN STATEMENT Learning centers are usually designed to offer a variety of materials, designs, and media through which students can work by themselves or with others to operationalize the information learned in the classroom.

Every child is an artist in the Art center! It is a place that promotes high level thinking, problem solving, and is rich in vocabulary.

Students can learn and develop skills in all learning domains (language, literacy, math, science, social studies, fine motor, gross motor, and social skills) through art.

The Art Box is a luminal art learning centre where playing with various of design element including blurring, middle zoning, leveling, layering and the connection between all the walkway and corridor.

With the changes of the time, barriers of cross-cultural communication among foreigners and locals lead to many communication problem. Besides, aging problem getting serious in Jalan Alor, lack of youth participation in traditional Chinese art and craft. At the same time, elderly who living here do not have enough and proper recreation space. This will make Wisma City Tower fast falling into decay.

Concept WHY ATOM AS INSPIRATION? atoms are everywhere actually atom is the basis of everything Since Malaysia has 3 different types of art (Malay, Chinese, and Indian) the atom contains 3 main elements (electron, protons, neutrons) where the elements represent the 3 types of art. together they make Malaysia whole just like the atom becomes whole when all the elements are present together.

The concept is creating an ART learning center by using a modern technique where all programs are related to ART at the same time the design is modern and new technology as the atom. The purpose of this concept is to encourage people to form new bonds and relationships after entering the community center through the interactive design of the space. And learn about Malaysian arts in an interesting way
