e d i t o ria l Numerous encounters with very special people have contributed to the fruitful development of our publishing house. With our first literary non-fiction book – Ingenious Encounters – World Tour to Nobel Laureates – we have expanded our program to include a genre that will surely open new perspectives, both for ourselves and our readers. Ingenious Encounters clearly demonstrates that the greatest achievements in our society have been brought about by people who believe firmly in something and follow their paths unswervingly. With our program for 2015, we also strive to do the same: We continue to come up with new and exciting ideas and implement these with great passion. It is this very special dynamism, which helps us bring people together and develop new projects. One of these is the new Daab Salon – a place where those who are interested in art and culture can come together and exchange ideas. The concept was greeted with great enthusiasm and, after three successful exhibitions, the Daab Salon has already established itself as one of the hotspots of the Cologne art scene. We also initiated a new fashion fair – the Cologne Fashion Days – which also serves as a platform for the direct and immediate ex change between young designers and their customers. In November 2015, we plan to make Cologne yet again the focus of the world of fashion with the second edition of the CFD – with even more exhibi tors and a more extensive program of events. We strive to bring the contents of our books to life and invite our readers, friends and partners to actively participate in this. Why not join us ?

Excerpt from the chapter J O U R N E Y I N T O T H E PA S T E p i s o d e : “ R o t b l a t ’s p a r a d i s e ” Professor Rotblat ...?” I whisper tentatively into the paper mountain, seriously fearing that the breath from my words

could bring it crashing down. […] I’m standing in a room stacked high with piles of papers, notebooks, and books, which must amount to millions of pages. I hesitate to take another step in case I unleash a worst -case scenario of paper. Joseph Rotblat, on the other hand, is always one crucial step ahead of other people. Firstly the one he took out of Los Alamos, the laboratories of the Manhattan Project. He sees the role of the scientist in the nuclear armaments race in the same way as Lord Zuckerman, scientific adviser to the British government during World War II: “When it comes to nuclear weapons [...] it is the man in the laboratory who at the start proposes that for this or that arcane reason it would be useful to improve an old or to devise a new nuclear warhead. It is he, the technician, not the commander in the field, who is at the heart of the arms race.” Joseph Rotblat quits the atomic bomb project in 1944 before the job is finished. He is co - signatory of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto and co -founds with Bertrand Russell its continuation in the form of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. He shares the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 with this organization. Because he took one step further than everyone else:

The Manhattan Project Dropout never saw the problem as ensuring that things did not fall into the » wrong hands « . The atomic bomb should not be allowed in anyone’s hands—this realization comes to him not after the event like other scientists, but before its completion. […] This nuclear physicist has written hundreds of appeals, pamphlets, and reports in his campaign for the complete abolition of nuclear weapons. The question of whether he has kept them all is answered by the appearance of his study. “Professor Rotblat ?” – I try it a bit louder this time, clearing my throat slightly in the process. Did that sheet of paper at the back twitch then ? […] I am on the point of a third appeal to the professor when a shock of white hair appears. There is something comical about our mutual » revelation« , and we both burst out laughing when we realize it, even before shaking hands. The amusement continues when it takes a couple of attempts to carefully maneuver our hands through the piles of paper to greet each other. The »paper trader« is familiar with the standard question when someone sees this room for the first time, and gets his answer in before I have a chance to ask: “Yes, I know exactly where and what everything is when I need it.” […] Professor Rotblat does not offer me a seat, because there are none, apart from his own office chair. A whole set of chairs may well be lurking under one of the book mountains in this room, but I will never know. So what now ? Small talk about the atomic bomb? I am astonished at how casually this professor talks about things that are very hard to swallow, and even has the occasional mischievous grin. I’m absolute ly fine with that. It seems a bit like a lecture when someone is at pains to emphasize the gravity of an issue by using very solemn words, as if the person he is talking to cannot grasp it otherwise. The weight of the matter is beyond dispute, and the facts are certain ly powerful enough. This highly gifted physicist is in fact the only top scientist to leave the US atomic bomb project before the wayward child is born […]. Like the others, he was recruited to help build an atomic bomb against Hitler. When it becomes clear that Hitler is losing both the atomic bomb race and the world war, Rotblat does not see the point of seeing the destructive enterprise to its perverse conclusion. […] They build the atomic bomb without him, and he becomes a commit ted opponent of the nuclear arms race and advocates the abolition of all nuclear weapons. As he observes in his Nobel Prize speech, you can’t reverse -engineer it ! […] According to Rotblat, the fact that it has not yet come to nuclear war — at the time of the Cuban missile crisis, for example — is sheer luck. And the physicist knows that relying on luck is not a good strategy. Abolishing war would be better. He tirelessly explains to people who regard the destruction of all nuclear Joseph Rotblat—“Paper trader” and the man weapons as utopian that it is only an interim position as far as he is who quit the Manhattan Project concerned: Firstly we have to get rid of nuclear weapons, then war itself. […] Rotblat, however, refutes the objection that there has always been war: “Well, people have always changed what has always been there. Including the things they initially thought impossible...!” Then he smiles like a rascal with a watertight alibi.

Many companies have art collections that, in terms of both significance and scale, are clearly on par with museum collections. Some corporate art collections find their roots in the collecting activity of the entrepreneurs themselves or their families, whereas others were founded on the passion for art of the respective senior managers or boards of directors. Behind most corporate art collections, however, is a curatorial team, which looks after the collection, develops it further and presents it both within the company itself as well as externally. off/on The Story of Light Art It is an undisputable fact that light has been one of the most essential themes of art since time immortal. From Leonardo’s gentle sfumato to Caravaggio’s dramatic chiaroscuro, from the invention of photography (which means literally »drawing with light «) in the first third of the 19th century to the all but scientific investigation of the painterly effects of light on the part of the Impressionists and the experimental photograms by avant- garde artists such as Man Ray and Lászlo Moholy - Nagy in the 1920s: For centuries, light has always been for many artists not only a source of fascination, but also and especially a mystery – also for contemporary artists. In the late 1950s, the artist group known as ZERO, for which light played an exceptional role, was founded in Düsseldorf by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. Shortly after, artists in the United States began creating installations with the ephemeral medium of light – at first glance, the fluorescent tubes of Dan Flavin might seem minimalist or conceptualist, but their transcendental, mystical effect remains undisputed. The same can be said of the nearly esoteric colour and light installations by his colleague James Turrell. To this day, artists across the globe experiment with artificial light to create works of art, which not only enthuse and fascinate viewers, but also confront us with themes as varied as epistemology and transcendence, political and social criticism, pop culture and the interrelation ship between art and design. Artist personalities such as Ólafur Eliasson and Mischa Kuball, Keith Sonnier and Joseph Kosuth, as well as Martin Creed and Tracey Emin are all prime examples for dozens of artists around the world, who make use of light in all its many facets. OFF/ON tells the story of light art from its inception to the present day – with a special focus on the future of the medium, exemplified by the new International Light Art Award, which was presented for the first time in 2015 by the Centre for International Light Art in Unna.

John Jaspers (1959 ) presently is the director of the Centre for International Light Art in Unna. The museum shows light art installations by renowned light artists from all over the world in the underground exhibition rooms of a former beer brewery. Formerly he was director of the Light Art Museum in Eindhoven, where he also was

curator of the international Light Art Festival GLOW. John Jaspers studied at the University of Amsterdam, and worked for many years as presenter of current affairs and arts programmes, and later as general manager at various radio- and television stations. Gérard A. Goodrow (1964 ) is a freelance curator and author based in Cologne. He studied in New Jersey, New York and Co logne. Among the most important stations of his career are the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Ursula Blickle Foundation in Kraichtal, the auction house Christie‘s in London, the art fairs Cologne Fine Art, Art Cologne, and CIAM – Centre for Interna-

tional Art Management in Cologne and Düsseldorf. Over the last 25 years, he has curated over 50 exhibitions in museums. He is author of numerous texts and has lec tured extensively on international contem porary art and the global art market. His most recent book, Passages, was pub lished in Oktober 2014 with Daab. The exhibition STUDIO examines some of the various readings of the artist’s studio through the work of Norbert Tadeusz (1940 – 2011), a German artist who frequently made the studio his subject, while at the same time introducing the basic themes and stylistic characteristics of Tadeusz’s oeuvre. Though he is represented in major museum collections and exhibited widely in Germany and internationally in his lifetime, Tadeusz is not well known in the United States. Born in 1940, he grew up in the industrial town of Dortmund (where he started his career as an apprentice window dresser) before relocating to Düsseldorf, the hub of the West German art world, in 1961. He studied for five years with the eponymous Joseph Beuys, with whom he had a stormy friendship, later becoming a respected professor in his own right by teaching at a number of renowned art academies, including Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Berlin, and Braunschweig. A contemporary of internationally recognized artists such as Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo, Georg Baselitz, and Jörg Immendorff, Tadeusz was associated with the so -called Neo -Expressionist (or New Wild) German figurative painting of the 1980s, though he always resisted categorization. s wi s s se n si bi l i ty The Culture of Architecture in Switzerland

Francesco Borromini is widely known as an Italian Renaissance architect, but he was actually born in Bissone near Lugano in the Old Swiss Confederacy. He began his ca reer by following his father’s footsteps as a stonemason. Le Corbusier originally came from La Chaux -de -Fonds, a small town in Neuchâtel canton; his father painted delicate images onto the dials of watches. Peter Zumthor, one of the most revered contemporary architects, was born to a cabinet-maker and started his career as a carpenter. These ex amples highlight the relationship that many Swiss architects have with craftsmanship and their intimate knowledge of working with materials. It is this deep understanding of the physical nature of making objects out of real materials – wood, stone, glass, concrete – that shines through the buildings of many Swiss architects, both historically and today. Swiss Sensibility examines the rich and deep -rooted tradition of architecture in Switzerland, the sensibility of many Swiss architects and a pervasive culture of architecture. That such a small, land- locked country has produced the wealth of fine architecture is testament to this tradition. The volume of work produced in Switzerland might not seem significant when compared to larger nations, but the resonance and influence of the work is considerable. Swiss Sensibility traces the history of this trajectory, examining the country’s architectural prosperity and the development of its many talented architects.

Why it is that architects in Switzerland have managed to achieve their standard of excellence ? What are the forces at play that have combined to create the fertile ground for the discipline to flourish? Switzerland has a large reservoir of small, creative practices that support a sophisticated culture of building design. This resource, coupled with an excellent standard of architectural education, high quality craftsmanship and a tradition of open competitions allowing new talent to emerge, are all aspects that influence the production of architecture in this country. In most countries the role of the architect has been diminished, whereas in Switzerland architects still tend to have authorship of their work; steering their designs from the sketch stage all the way through to the final finished building. Building in Switzerland’s alpine topography poses a significant challenge but, at the same time, forces architects to think three - dimensionally from the onset. Though one can’t talk of a Swiss style per se, what is evident is a certain understatement and a strong sense of belonging with the context. The extreme weather impacts on detailing; keeping the icy cold out and the heat inside is vital to survival. Ad ditionally, there are not many natural resources like oil and steel in Switzerland, so architects have had to be innovative and use the natural resources they have had at their disposal in abundance: stone and wood. If the definition of sensibility is having an acute awareness and responsiveness, then the architecture presented in this book shows in myriad ways Swiss architects’ keen sensitivity to their environment and history, whether it be the restrained renovation of an old farmhouse in Ticino or a bold, new Youth Hostel in Graubünden; a multi - storey apartment buil ding in Basel city or a museum in Flims village. Buildings, both large and small, each display the architect’s attention to detailing and material, beautiful craftsmanship and precise construction. The catalogue of projects shown have been designed by Swiss architects and built in Switzerland during the past few decades. Each project is examined with the aid of texts, photographs, and drawings. Twenty- four projects from across the country by seventeen architecture practices are interspersed with five essays by prominent academics – both architects and non- architects – and an interview with a master architect. The chosen kaleidoscope of buildings is intended to inspire the reader and convey the admiration shared by many.

Anna Roos studied architecture at the University of Cape Town and a postgraduate degree at the Bartlett School of Architec ture at UCL in London. Moving to Bern, Switzerland in 2000, she worked as an architect, designing projects in South Africa, Australia, and Scotland. She has been working as a freelance architecture journalist since 2007 and writes for A10, En suite Kultur Magazin, Mononcle Magazine, and Swisspearl Ar chitecture Magazine. She also copyedits books for numerous publishing houses in Germany and Switzerland including: Lars Müller, DOM, Gestalten, DETAIL Green, Birkhäuser and Prestel. A love of beauty is common to almost all of us, and every man likes to think himself best able to recognise its presence. But human standards of taste, judgement and dis cernment vary tremendously and standards of female beauty – as well as male – are among those most suscep tible to differences of opinion. Therefore it would be both hopeless and senseless to try to find a common denominator for this most controversial of attributes. If this were not so, one picture would do for all, and there would be no point in producing this book.

George Holz’ photographic career has spanned over three decades. A graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and pro tégé of the legendary Helmut Newton, his fashion editorials have appeared in Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue Italia and Vanity Fair. The Grammy Award- winning photographer has shot countless advertising campaigns, movie posters and album covers. His nudes have been shown in galleries and museum exhibitions around the world. Looking at George Holz’s photographs surprises me – they have allure, a certain unexplainable élégance in a very European style. His vita tells me that his great teacher and guru Helmut Newton (31. October 1920, Berlin – 23. January 2004, Los Angeles) still looks over his shoulders, while photographing his delicate models, actresses, and celebrities. George moulds his goddesses with infinite care. In the phenomena of a moment a fine photograph creates an élite image, an icon – that is and will be forever this famous lady or an unknown beautiful girl. Very often in black and white, his images touch you, they are above reality – his intense admiration and respect for graceful women. In the year 1930, Sir Cecil Beaton (14. January 1904, London – 18. January 1978, Broadchalke ) published, in London, his Book of Beauty and wrote: ”What makes a beauty? We despair, we have little inkling of the secret, for often in no way do beauties resemble one another. Some taunt us with their Rubenesque stature, others are of only modest embonpoint, some are decadent and thin, some are sugary as china shepherdesses, many delight us with their imperfections.“ Written more than 80 years ago – this is still valid. graphed – and since the invention of photography in August 1839 – donated to the world by the French government – there has been an infinite variety of renderings of feminine beauty. Fritz Gruber (1908–2005), began building the Gruber Collection: Photography of the 20th Century, which became part of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne in 1977. An honorary mem ber of the Photographic Society of Germany and founding member of the International Photoscene Cologne, Gruber works internationally as a juror, adviser, and commentator in all fields of photography. It is reported that Wallinger runs in circles, waves endlessly to no one, hops, jumps and falls asleep (exhausted) on the polished granite floor. Performance art requires the audience to suspend logic and good taste to appreciate its meaning or its lack thereof. But the Wallinger piece does have a certain charm of pure confusion. Whether it has links to the Berlin DaDa performances of the twenties or the

DAAB SALON A Fascinating Place to Meet and Exchange Ideas Encounters with interesting people are the basis of everything we do. Thus, when we were consi dering moving to a new office space, it seemed only logical to search for space where we could hold book presentations, readings, exhibitions, artist talks, lectures, soirées and other events. In the end, the space found us – and so, in the sum mer of 2014, we moved to Brüsseler Platz in the very heart of Cologne’s vibrant creative scene. There couldn’t be a better symbiosis between the books we publish and distribute and a fascinating place to meet and exchange ideas. Even more so, since we have Gérard Goodrow at our side – our friend, author and editor – as an excellent curator and »partner in crime«. The inaugural exhibition with works by Kai Rich ter and Lars Breuer was already a major hit – and the Daab Salon quickly established itself as one of the new hotspots of the Cologne art scene. Especially Kai Richter’s »Tribüne« (Bleachers), created specifically for the exhibition, perfectly epitomized our vision of a space, in which people can come together and everything is possible. The series of pictures by Lars Breuer with the volatile title »Esplosione« left no doubt: We began with a BANG! This attitude was continued in the second exhibition, featuring works by the Cologne-based photo-artist Tobias Grewe, who created his very first video work especially for this very special »home game « – a world premiere in his own back yard, so to speak! In the most recent exhibition, the Düsseldorf based Ukrainian artist Aljoscha introduced visi tors and guests to the strange and magic world

of »Bioisms«. With his seemingly organic forms, Aljoscha comments on the way we deal with biotechnical processes and speaks of a future, in which artists will actually create life. For this year as well, we plan to provide a plat form for young artists from the Cologne-Düsseldorf region. A particular highlight at the end of the year will certainly be the exhibition of »No bel Portraits« by the Berlin-based photographer Peter Badge, whose new book »Ingenious En counters«, co-authored by Sandra Zarrinbal, is scheduled to appear in September. Finally, Cologne has a location especially for creative personalities, which is on par with international standards. Following two years of renovation and refurbishment, The QVEST Hotel, conceived and developed by the makers of QVEST magazine, has recently opened its doors to guests from all over the world!

Yoga mats are also available. There is also a library lounge on the first floor and, what is more, the newest issue of QVEST magazine as well as various books published by Daab, are available in all rooms. Breakfast is served at the table.

This hotel with the subtitle of »hideaway« is in fact a place of refuge in the heart of Cologne. It is located on an almost » secret « square, Gereonskloster, in the centre of town, virtu ally unknown even to many residents of Cologne because of the surrounding architecture and the fact that it can only be reached via two small, narrow streets. In the very shadows of the basilica of St. Gereon, one of Cologne’s most famous Romanesque churches, is a small unexpected oasis. Neverthe less, numerous restaurants, bars, museums and galleries are all within walking distance. This hidden jewel in the middle of Cologne’s city centre, located between the Cathedral and the popular Belgian District, surprises most visitors and guests because of its furnishings, all of which has been selected with great attention to detail. Without being dominated by it, the hotel is furnished with a great deal of original art and design. A total of 24 rooms, each with its own unique layout and de sign, range in size from 12 to 120 m² – with even the smal lest room boasting well -designed and high -quality furnishings that would please any art and design enthusiast. The historic building also offers various suites, including the Salon Suite with a nearly six-metre -high cross -vaulted ceiling and who se 40 m² bedroom features what is probably the last hand pain ted medieval wooden ceiling dating back to c. 1390. All rooms are individually furnished, yet clearly in keeping with the overall design of the hotel. This special refuge provides a peaceful atmosphere for all guests. Although it was originally decided to do completely without televisions, these can, of course, be provided in all rooms on request.
