Dean’s Message This academic year marks the 14th anniversary of the University of Cape Coast, School of Medical Sciences (UCCSMS) and has been heralded with the graduation of 71 new doctors. This brings to 506, the total number of doctors trained by this noble institution since its inception.

UCCSMS prides itself with 6 core values (academic excellence, discipline, competence, professionalism, integrity and teamwork) which are driving us towards the attainment of our vision of being a school of medicine that is well positioned and with a worldwide acclaim.

Until recently, the school’s capabilities had been underestimated, yet we have risen to the challenge and proven that we are doing exceptionally well with the aim of producing medical practitioners with knowledge, skills and attitudes that are essential to filling the gap in the health working force in Ghana and the world. It is refreshing to note that over 30 out of the 42 first batch of doctors graduated from this school have specialized in various fields of medicine, while a greater proportion of the total number graduated so far are in various stages of their postgraduate and residency training.

Annually, the numbers of graduate students who opt to study medicine in UCCSMS keep increasing, and in order to accommodate the increasing number, a 4.5-year Graduate Entry Medicine Programme was developed in 2018 alongside the regular 6-year programme which admits only senior secondary school leavers.

Despite the achievements of the school, some challenges exist. These include inadequate infrastructure (classrooms, laboratories, and student hostels) partly due to uncompleted projects, inadequate ICT and simulation equipment for skills training and inadequate training sites and human resource. Some efforts are being made to complete a state-of-the-art science laboratory, administration block and offices and the lecture rooms. Recruitment of some skilled staff is also underway.

I wish to congratulate the Class of 2021 for completing their 6-year programme of study. I pray that as you walk into the world of medical practice, you become good ambassadors of UCCSMS. Long live UCC, long live UCCSMS Thank you

My sincere gratitude goes to the Governing Council and Management of the University of Cape Coast, forebears, medical pioneers, staff (teaching and non-teaching), stakeholders (MoH/GHS, Central Regional Health Directorate, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, and PPAG), and distinguished people of the various COBES programme communities for their immense support to the training of our students.

Message from the Class President Life has an interesting way of working out.

After an infinitesimal number of choices that started long before we were even born, we have all ended up here, at the end of a tiring journey. A journey where we’ve earned a degree to pursue a career that is the arrangement of wings that will enable us to take off and burst out of the skyline into another world called life. A title that says we are smart. Yes, we are Doctors!

In the early years of medical school, we figured out how to discover new things. By and by, we showcased our grit and knowledge as we tackled exam after exam. We learned the integration of medical knowledge with the art of caring for a human being sooner than we thought. The most rewarding aspect was serving the rural communities in the Eastern and Central Regions of Ghana noted to have some healthcare challenges as we embarked on our annual Community Based Experience and Services (COBES) Programs. Those experiences are worth repeating.

These past 6 years have been many years of devotion, sacrifices, resilience, stunning persistence, innumerable long stretches of contemplating, uncertainties, unlimited evenings spent learning, preparing for presentations and exams and at the same time caring for patients. At long last, the time is here and we get to show the world that the six years of medical school training is a testament to the exceptional Physicians we will become. This is the point at which the greater part of that commitment will pay off.

This is where the future starts so we will walk the radiance street with our chest out, heads up and jaw up as gallant soldiers ready to serve mankind. We do not lose sight of the challenges the future beholds but believe strongly that with the knowledge and skills acquired, we will overcome all obstacles because we’ve been refined as gold.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented a challenging situation which included the extended duration of our stay in school. There were teary days and nights, gloomy times and seasons but today we smile! Together, we survived the pandemic and we have demonstrated what makes the Class of 2021 unique: Our unwavering commitment to our studies, our camaraderie with our peers, and our resilience in tackling any obstacle presented to us. We are goal-oriented!

I remember walking into the lecture Hall that first day of medical school: bright-eyed and eager. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed seeing almost 70 students fill every nook and cranny in the lecture Hall. I never imagined how much we would grow and develop in 6 long years. My old friend recently asked me, if considering what I know now, I would do medical school again? My honest answer was that I think medical school is an experience that is best enjoyed once in a lifetime, but if I had the opportunity to go back and do it with you all again, I would do it in a heartbeat. To me, it’s about the people and knowing that on the off chance that I ever require anything, 70 people will be there for me. That’s what makes the experience worth having. That’s what makes life worth living. Thank you for making my medical school experience a great one. I’m pleased to be a UCC-trained Doctor.

Honestly I just wanted a “sure” job, although I hear it’s not as “sure” as it used to be.

I inspire myself the most because I’m very proud of how much I’ve grown over the past 6 years. Sometimes I’m even surprised by how much I’ve changed.

That makes me realize I’m even capable of much more.

When i was able to come back to school after I deferred for a year. I felt all hope was lost after the first year.

Hopefully I would have become a consultant

Influence from most sciences students I met in Prempeh College who wanted to read medicine. Quite a number ended up becoming medical doctors.

Akosah and Nadia but not forgetting the rest but these two really inspire me more

Glory to God for how far He has brought me. My gratitude goes to the class for not harassing me because of my age, but gave me all the support from level 100 to now i say God bless you immensely.

When our girls really excelled in the maiden volleyball tournament during our final Healthweek in the school (2019).

My first honours in level 300, I was so proud of myself.

I have an interest in Paediatrics and Child Health. I think it's a rewarding field. Imagine seeing a child who was so sick getting better and better under your care. I don't know yet, but it wouldn't be a bad specialty to be in.

Done with specialization and maybe sub specialty too, making money and chilling and maybe terrorizing the lives of some medical students

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

I just liked it as a child and I guess the liking developed into a desire so I chased after it.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

Dr. Atta Kwarteng Dofuor. His determination to finish medical school against all odds is admirable. We don't have to give up on our dreams just because life happened.

Any farewell message?

Don't be intimidated by anyone or anything. When you fall, rise up. Don't let anything keep you down. Always strive to be the best you can, never settle for being average or mediocre (remember, you're God's masterpiece) and in all things, put God first. Love yourself and love life, besides “problem no dey finish in this world”.

Seeing myself becoming whom I envisioned a decade ago makes me proud anytime it crosses my mind.

What specialty are you interested in?Any reason?

Honestly speaking, I have not settled on any specialty yet.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10years?

I may not be able to tell you exactly where I will find myself, but I can assure you 3 people will come looking for me; "Accomplishment”, "Excellence" and "Nobility”; and they will find me. My location will be on a map in the mind of my patients and all I could touch.

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

The medical profession and all it has to offer provided enough motivation for me to choose medicine.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

My roommate Felix has been one person who has both overtly and covertly inspired me the most along every step of the way.

Farewell message Be the physician whose actualization will be immortality. Immortality because you became the physician whose credentials rebelled against the borders of an A4 sheet and refused to remain dead in ink but lived in the lives of all you touched.

During my Junior Clerkship end of rotation exam in Internal Medicine and Therapeutics, after taking my time to examine at a GI station, the external examiner just looked at my face and told me “Thanks for passing through”. Ow!

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

One was when I went to spend the whole weekend before my neuro I end of module at the CMF biennial conference at KNUST. Yet I managed to pass that paper. I was so happy. LOL.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

I haven’t decided yet.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I wish to have specialised by then and to be contributing to the development of healthcare in the country.

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

Hehe, nothing really. I have been called “doctor” since I was a child. So I guess the path was already created for me.

Dr Edward Akosah Danso. That guy is just too good.

Any farewell message?

The school will keep getting “tensious”, but always remember to put your trust in God and you will never regret it.

Very difficult to pinpoint, because I can see myself doing any of the specialties. They all appeal to me honestly except paediatrics. Children are so unpredictable.

As a consultant in my chosen specialty

Honestly, I don’t know how I ended up in medical school. I always wanted to be an electrical engineer

The past six years have been quite an experience.

Still undecided, but Internal Medicine most likely.

Retired from practice and pursuing other interests I put on hold.

The challenge and discipline of having to concentrate on something for 6 years.

Your most embarrassing moment/nerviest moment?

Ophthalmology rotation. I didn’t really take the rotation seriously and so hadn’t solidified my differential diagnoses. After examining, I was asked for the diagnosis.

I mentioned cataract and Dr Brookman asked me, “What else?” I don’t know how “cracked lens” came out of my mouth. She just stared at me quietly.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

The day someone told me I was the reason that person had made it that far in medical school.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

Transplant Surgery

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

Married with a nice family, a rewarding specialty, an attractive bank account balance and a significant amount of political influence.

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

My mum wanted to be a doctor when she was younger and that didn’t happen; I feel she’s achieving that dream through me.

Well, I remember in Level 400 when we were doing our surgery rotation, I clerked a woman at the ward and some weeks later as I walked past the OPD I overheard somebody shouting "doctor, doctor", obviously I knew I wasn't the one (a freshman in clinical year) so I was just going my way. Then someone said Sister, the woman there is calling you. I went to her, only for this woman to start telling her companion how I helped explain things to her understanding and to encourage her, since she was afraid of the surgery she was going to undertake. She said she was happy and was all hopeful I came by her bed that evening at the ward. I told her, I was only a student and not yet a doctor. She blessed me that day.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

Surgery/Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Not so certain yet.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

If I have breath, hopefully making impact in my profession and developing other areas of my life.

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

Medicine wasn't anything I had talked about as a child. I wanted to read law and defend those who had nobody to help them, until that unfortunate accident of the 3 doctors; Professor J.M.K. Quartey, Dr Isaac Bentsi and Dr Benjamin Osei-Wiafe in 2005. Although I was young then, a part of me was moved by what happened. I thought to myself that probably if we (Ghana) had a lot of doctors, these ones wouldn't have travelled a long distance just to help those who needed their services. To help the sick (a vulnerable group) was my motivation.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

I actually do not have one person who inspires me the most in the class. Different aspects of different people in the class inspires me and I don’t think I will finish recounting if I had to start.

Any farewell message?

Yes. To us the new doctors, I would say we should value human lives above all else and have some form of integrity in dispensing our duty. And to our juniors, whatever you set your mind to do, you can do with determination and a positive attitude.

My proudest moment is making it this far. It has not been an easy journey at all, but through it all God has been faithful!

My most embarrassing moment came when I was asked to examine a patient's cardiovascular system during an OSCE in Level 400. Prior, I had rehearsed for days with theatrics to display for maximum marks. As I bent to showcase the first line of my script by looking under the patient's bed, all my examination accoutrements fell out of my pockets on to the ground. I went on to say sorry thrice to the patient and examiner as it happened again and again. Having finally picked them up, I never regained confidence and composure. The entire cardiovascular examination was shambolic and disorganized. Looking back, the only aspect of that drama I would have staged in any theatre would be; "Good God Almighty, how on earth did I pass that exam?"

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

When the entire class made it to clinical years.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

Public Health. Community Medicine contributed a lot to this interest.

Working with the United Nations

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

My empathy for the sick and desire to help the weak and vulnerable in any society.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

Mr. Atta Kwarteng Doffuor: his drive and willingness to pursue his dream of being medical doctor, despising age, marital and family challenges; to go on and achieve that dream today is very inspirational and commendable.

What is your favourite module or rotation?

My favorite module was Renal II. It’s one of the few modules where you didn’t have to “chew”. For the rotation; I’d go for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Whats your worst module or rotation ?

I think my worst rotation should be Pediatrics.

Your most embarrassing moment/nerviest moment?

During junior clerkship for internal medicine OSCE, at my GI station the external examiner stepped out to make a phone call and this patient I was about to examine whispered to me “it’s my kidney that has the problem” When the external examiner returned and asked me of my impression, I just told him oh the patient has bilaterally enlarged kidneys when the patient actually had hepatosplenomegaly. Those few minutes before the bell went was one of my most terrifying encounters with any lecturer.

What specialty are you interested in?Any reason?

I like to keep my options open but it’ll definitely take a miracle to see me as a pediatrician.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10years?

I believe there are no timelines to achieving things in life. I like to take it one step at a time. No need to rush.

As the days go by the options get clearer

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

Honestly, I’ve picked bits and pieces from almost everyone in the class but my standout guys are Anthony Apio, Randy Gyimah, Edward Akosah. For Apio, he is like a hub of ideas, Randy is always willing to help. For Eddie, his level of academic output is enviable and he is generous to a fault.

Any farewell message?

Like Midas touch, may all that we touch turn into gold.

Embryology. Then, I was really passionate about Medicine.

Psychiatry. Almost always had the medical school syndrome when running the rotation and even worse on days of their exams.

When Prof (Mrs.) Obiri-Yeboah caught me making notes in her class. It was not funny.

Our very first lecture in the medical school when Dr. Yaffeto caught me recording his lecture which Ben advised me to do. He was so furious that day and blasted me very well in front of the whole class. He couldn’t help but talk about the incident every 2 minutes as he continued to lecture.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

Being a part of the carols play during the 2017 CMF Carols Night of which we were the eventual winners.

What specialty are you interested in?Any reason?

Initially it was Sports medicine and Orthopaedics because of my love for sports and the intrigue of getting close to the action while I attend to my duties but due to some personal considerations, I am keeping an open mind.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10years?

In the lay ministry and practising in a private facility

What motivated you into choosing medicine ?

For the job security and prestige. Again, the title ‘Dr’ was added to my name at my naming ceremony so lets just say the prophecy has to be fulfilled.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

Lilly Frimpong. I have a list of other people who inspire me in the class. Bernice, Kepler, Ben, Christian and the list goes on and on. What makes Lilly top of my list is that she is the best definition of an excellent and true Christian medical student I’ve ever experienced.

Any farewell message?

A lot of people deem the medical school as a difficult place to be. Well, it’s true. But the longevity of true friendship, being honest with yourself and quickly learning and following what brings success makes it enjoyable and easy to live with. It has been a roller coaster ride of meeting wonderful people and lecturers, showing my talents and learning A LOT of new stuff. I will be forever grateful to God for putting me in the class of 2021 and in a school like UCCSMS. Long live the Class of 2021, long live UCCSMS!

During my Senior Clerkship in Internal Medicine, Dr Donkor asked me what IRIS (Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome) is, and I said I didn't know, and he said "This your I don't know I don't know thing, It won't help you o" and he said this in front of my juniors...o charley!

When I had honours in Level 300 professional (End of year) exams. And oh the day in Level 100 that Dr Somuah called out my name in class, I thought I had failed, I thought he's about to “blast” me, I was even close to tears, then he said I had the HIGHEST SCORE in his quiz!

Internal Medicine or prolly Paediatrics. I just don't want to do anything Surgery related

Everyone in the class inspires me in different circumstances. Like those who are so versatile to juggle business, art, leadership, pastoral care and even marriage with medical school. But if I'm pressed to choose, Bernice is the female in the class who inspires me the most, she is so diligent with her books. Mr. Atta K is the male figure I admire, he's just so humble, he doesn't see age as a barrier to seek academic help from anyone who can help him.

I always say to people that nothing motivated me. I didn't choose medicine. Medicine chose me and for that I am very grateful.

Not anyone specifically because every one of my classmates back in school were fighters of some sort.

Hard nuts you can't easily crack. The tougher it got, the tougher we all became and that to me is the hallmark of excellence.

First of all, I'm grateful to God. He was there for me throughout my journey here. As to where my path continues. I barely know but I'm sure I can still rely on His help again. Hm, this table you're shaking Respiratory I & II. These 2 modules which didn't look challenging literally "took my breath away" and left me breathless.

Throwback to Level 100 on a particular day, my roommate said she didn't like a shirt I had put on, but I didn't listen to her. We left for class only for the lecturer to call out all those wearing shirts of a colour similar to mine to solve some math problems he had written on the board.

Unluckily for me, I got the most challenging problem which I was unable to solve. At that very moment I just wanted the earth to crack open and swallow me.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

My proudest moment has been me entering this school and keeping my head above the water through it all. After all, they said, “Water will find its own level.” It did, and so did we. Now look at where we are.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

Surgery. Definitely surgery. Though I'm yet to decide which specific sub-specialty.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

Next 10years...okay so I'll still be climbing the medical ladder, moving steadily to get to the top. With a high class, ultra-modern private practice, settled down with a very beautiful family and enjoying life to the max because, "Problem no dey finish for this world inside." Lol

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

I've always wanted to be a doctor since childhood so here I am, Lol. But it has been a personal goal to become one so I motivated myself and my very supportive parents and siblings also gave me the needed motivation and guidance I needed to make this major decision in my life.

Also, the fact that I am likely to get a job after school, was very necessary in making this choice.

Who in the class inspires you most and why?

Edward Akosah Danso. One would be tempted to say he has it all, but he's also one of the most down to earth persons you can ever come across. There were times when he even had more faith in me than I had in myself.

Always pushing you to be the best you can be and most importantly never giving up no matter what. He makes you appreciate the never say die until the bones are rotten slogan. Whenever I count my Medical School blessings, I count him twice.

I'll also miss COBES. The freedom that came along with it, and all the fun games and food. It was a wonderful opportunity to bond with classmates and get to know people better.

Your most embarrassing moment/nerviest moment?

My nerviest moment was during my psychiatry end of rotation exam in 600. We were given 50 mins to clerk the patients after which we were to report the history and examination findings in 10 mins. Not completing the reporting could imply failure. I was given a patient who really stressed me. As at 25 mins, I hadn't gotten her presenting complaint and history of presenting complaint. I was very frustrated. I went to the nurses to ask for a change of patient but they were not willing to.

I nearly cried. My mate who was also clerking near me was laughing at me. I will never forget. She didn't try at all. Thankfully, I went through the history taking. My woes were however not over. At the reporting stage, I dug a grave for myself with an answer I gave and the examiner just kept pushing me down. I felt so terrible and wished time would just be up. Unfortunately for me, even after the bell rang, the examiner kept me in, asking me questions. I felt so terrible after that exam.

It's an experience I would never forget.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

It was during our Orthopaedics rotation in level 600.

Orthopaedics as a rotation in UCCSMS is quite challenging, with a lot of expectation to remember the details of many basic science topics. I started my rotation not knowing what to expect, but I had a rather pleasant experience. My favourite ones were when Dr. Baidoo commended me and gave me handshakes during ward rounds for impressing him with my answers to his questions.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

I have a number of interests but I haven't decided on one yet.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I see myself making the world a better place through medicine, interior design and business.

I really don’t have one, but for a discipline, I’d say not every medical student likes biochemistry. Lol!

Your most embarrassing moment/nerviest moment?

Haha on two different occasions: during my Junior Clerkship End of Rotation examinations with Prof. Ganiyu Rahman and Dr. Mrs Boackarie. After examining the patients, I rattled "...to complete my examination, I will like to do a Digital Rectal Exam" hoping to hear " Oh Skip". Lol, it ended in premium tears when they told me "Okay, you can go on and do it" ei Ewurade! Who sent me! On two different occasions!!! Why me?! Oohh daabi.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

Really, UCCSMS has given me lots of good memories.

From academics to extracurricular engagements, so many. One that comes to mind was when I served as CMF President and just when I was about to hand over, COVID-19 struck. We were sent home indefinitely and in fear. As a fellowship, in the face of the pandemic, God led us into giving birth to an online ministry series called "Candid Conversations" which brought us together, connected to God and helped alleviate fears of members during the trying times. Together with my executives, we hosted prominent Christian leaders who shared their life stories with us. We had people like Dr. Sonnie Badu, LP Adelaide Heward-Mills, Majid Michel, Mrs. Diana Hamilton, and Bishop Kakra Baiden.

What specialty are you interested in? Any reason?

I would say Cardiothoracic surgery. Lately, Orthopedics has been catching my fancy. Endocrinology for the medicine aspect. But really, I'm still open to more daunting options.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

Basking in God's perfect will. Should be done with my chosen specialty, become an international speaker combined with ministry.

What motivated you into choosing medicine?

I just love the science and art behind medicine. Also, knowing I can reach out and minister to strategic people through my profession.

Favourite memory was when our class boys won a football match against the then 500s. We were in 300.

Our class usually loses at these matches so we didn't see it coming and what made this special was that it was on Val's day. I guess they realized we were fed up with them so they had to do something.

I sought for both a gratifying and humbling field and Medicine seemed to be it

Lilly Owusu Frimpong; she is an all-rounder~ Exceptionally brilliant, graceful, ever so kind and hardworking!

Molecular and Cellular Basis of Health and Disease I

Your most embarrassing moment/nerviest moment?

Nerviest moment: Every end of rotation and every time we have to mention our names in class or at ward rounds. I usually have to mention my name more than once.

Your proudest moment/favourite memory?

When Abenase had honours (H) in COBES although we were last or last but one at the presentation
