This Studio aims to entirely re-imagine the BNY Mellon Building as an adapted and revitalized Civic Center that would
support a mixture of Civic, Commercial, and Residential uses in the very heart of Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle. This project
is a collaboration between the Department of Architecture and the Swanson School of Engineering. Proposals produced in
Arc 1204 during Fall (‘24) will later be adopted by students in the School of Engineering for their capstone (Spring, ‘25).
Studio Objectives
• Build a robust body of knowledge in the subjects of Housing and Design for Adaptive Reuse
• Develop an in-depth understanding of adaptive reuse strategies for Office-to-Residential Conversion
• Employ an iterative design methodology to explore new and innovative solutions to Housing Typology
• Establish a stated design objective/concept and maintain it throughout the AIA standard project delivery schedule (PD, SD, DD, + CD)
• Explore new forms of Architectural Media including Hybrid Drawings, Triptych, Speculat
