Pasadena Rose Float by Dev Bhatt, Ruben Ayala Every year Ruben S. Ayala high school’s Key Club has the opportunity to work with many other volunteering organizations on the floats for the Rose Parade. We arrived in Pasadena in the late morning and were quickly given tasks such as applying glue and seeds to the floats, painting, or cutting petals for use on other floats. For the remainder of the day, Members worked on a jungle themed float by painting details to the animals and scenery while also applying leaves and seeds to the finished parts. It was a fun experience to see the immense amount of detail put into every float as well as the many unusual types of materials used to decorate the floats such as Onion seeds and Parsley. The float featured familiar animals such as flamingoes, a gorilla, a leopard, all clad in various but colorful seeds and flowers in the forests of a jungle. It was good seeing many volunteers work together to help create floats that would be appreciated by thousands of people. On January 1st I was pleased to see our hard work and efforts pay off when looking at the finished float on television. This event may have not been the most action filled service but it certainly was an event that I look forward to participating next year.

Stussy Sale by Nasser Elhajjaoui, Los Osos As the semester came to a close, Los Osos Key Club decided to hold their first Stussy Sale fundraiser of the year. As Fundraising Chair, it was my duty to organize the sale and ensure that everything went smoothly on both sides. Fortunately, everything went as planned and the Stussy Sale was set up in the Los Osos cafeteria during 5th and 6th period and everything was ready for the students directly after school. I helped put clothes onto racks and lay shirts on the tables during my 6th period and stayed to help out as the sale went on. After about three hours, the customers began to die down and soon it was just me and a couple other volunteers. We helped clean up everything afterwards and finished up around 7 pm. The fundraiser proved to be a big success for Los Osos Key Club and we hope to work more with Stussy in the coming years!

Teacher Appreciation Day by Regina Tambunan, Alta Loma Although the formal day for Teacher Appreciation day here in the U.S. is not until May 2, our club thought that it would be nice to show our hard-working teachers at Alta Loma our gratitude for their dedication. So on the morning of the second day of finals week, members woke up early to give hot chocolate and doughnuts to teachers across campus. First, members decorated the carts that were to be filled with the hot chocolate and food using table covers, bows, and garlands of tinsel. Then we filled the carts with the food and drink and started distributing the gifts to the teachers. “It was nice to see the teachers’ faces light up when we told them that it was for them,” Regina Tambunan, “Walking around campus also amplified the club’s presence because students kept asking us for some of the food and why we were doing it.” Our club alone would not have been able to do the task alone without the help of our new teacher club advisor, Mrs. way, who suggested the idea and made the event come to life. Though it was a struggle to wake up earlier on a finals day and to experience difficulties in completing the event on time, our club enjoyed servicing our local community.

Barnes & Noble Christmas Gift Wrapping by Sara Wang, Chino Hills Being able to help so many people gift wrap their presents was such a fun and amazing experience! As they enter through the doors of Barnes and Nobles, they are immediately greeted by us and reminded of our gift-wrapping services. Then, when customers are done paying for their items at the register, they walk over to our stand located conveniently at the entrance. There was an array of festive gift-wrapping papers to choose from and plenty of holiday spirit from our volunteers! Located on our stand is a small little tip jar decorated with the words, “Chino Hills Key Club, Not Required, But Tips Appreciated!” This event was not only a great place to spend my Thursday night, but also one of our many fundraising opportunities for our club. I‘m excited to volunteer again at this event next year as I brought smiles to the faces of many with my extravagant holiday gear!
