HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR LTG!

04

Dear Ricky... Wowow happy birthday Ricks! It's crazy how time has flown so fast. I remember being in 8th grade when I met you and we would hangout with Francesca during PE. It's amazing how far we've come especially you and becoming Treasurer and then LTG! You've really done amazing things and have always left such an outstanding impression of the type of person you are. You have always been kind and so full of character and I'm really glad I've had the opportunity to work with you and become better friends. Thank you so much for everything you do Ricky! Stay Milky ;) Lyndsey Chu Happy Birthday Ricky! I'm so glad I've been able to join you as part of your DLT, but more importantly, I'm glad we became friends! You've been so helpful and supportive, and your charisma tugs at the hearts of many! You always put others before you as a selfless leader, and we all admire you for that. Thank you for all that you do Ricky, we love you! - Adriel Eje

Happy birthday Ricky!!! Through all the years I have gotten to know you, you have never failed to make me laugh, cry, or do both at the same time. You are honestly so amazing, and you never stop breaking barriers left and right (such kapow amirite), not only in Key Club, but also everything else you do. Your amicable personality and contagious laugh/wheeze/cackle is the greatest I have ever experienced and heard. As an LTG, I know you have your own doubts sometimes, but you have a whole division and community who loves and supports you, and I hope you always remember that. On the behalf of myself and the division, I wish you the best of birthdays, and I also thank you, for just being you. Grace Yang

love always, your DLT

Region 13 Beach Bonanza by Regina Tambunan, Alta Loma Region 13 Beach Bonanza took place on August 6 at Santa Monica Beach. There, the clubbers participated in Olympic Games, beach activities, and collaborated with the Elephants, Seals, Green Turtles, and Blue Turtles. An ice breaker that was led by our division EA, Dylan Pelayo, was called “My Friendly Neighbor.” To start the ice breaker activity, the group starts off in a circle, where someone had to say something someone else had, and then those people had to run around and tried to fill a spot. The last person to try to find a spot has to go in the middle of the crowd and introduce themselves as well as share a hobby they enjoy. After ice breakers, the region was divided into teams for the Olympic Games, where groups chose their team names and created chants. Then the groups got into the first game, in which members held hands in a circle and keep them linked together as a hula hoop was passed around the circle by putting their bodies through it. The next game involved two representatives from each team, who competed in a three-legged race. The last game required team effort, as each group built sandcastles using their creativity. Once the sandcastles were built, each team “sold” the masterpieces to the Kiwanians, so they could select the winners. Finally, the clubbers dispersed onto the beach to pick up various forms of trash, such as wrappers, pieces of plastic, straws, paper, etc., to dispose of them in the designated area. “The Region 13 Beach Bonanza is definitely an event I will not forget! We started off with ice breakers and moved onto our Olympic Games. It was great to meet the people on our teams from the other divisions. After our Olympic Games we began our beach cleanup, which went on for about an hour. Lastly we got to hang out with our friends on the beach for the rest of the time. Hopefully we will have another Santa Monica beach trip next summer!” Caitlyn Diaz e x c l a i m s .

Vacation Bible School by Grace Yang, Los Osos A few times this month, I went to the division event, Vacation Bible School, at the Ontario Salvation Army Church. Throughout the whole event, which lasted a little bit longer than a week, we helped with setting up their summer Vacation Bible School event. The theme was called “High Seas Expedition,” so we were outlining, drawing and painting ocean scenes on the walls, making props to decorate the chapel, hanging up decorations and signs, and decorating their multipurpose room to make it seem like visitors were inside a whale. I met extremely kind people who were volunteering there on their own from local schools, and found it very heartwarming to see a community―our community―of people coming together and having a great time while decorating for the event. Moreover, I was amazed at how creative and resourceful the project leaders were. Just from flexible PVC pipes, tablecloth material, tape and zip ties, we were able to transform a room to house a beautiful drapery hanging above, from which handmade, painted paper fish were hanging. In the end, the whole entire building looked amazing, and I was extremely proud of everyone who came and worked long hours, as everything was done by hand, and from scratch. All in all, I definitely look forward to volunteering with the Ontario Salvation Army next y e a r !

EtiRanchOs Beach Clean Up by Susi Le, Rancho Cucamonga The EtiRanchOs Beach Clean Up at Santa Monica was an exciting event! On Saturday, July 30th, members of the Rancho, Etiwanda, and Osos Key Clubs embarked on a journey to Santa Monica Beach. When we first arrived at the beach, we played a few fun icebreakers such as My Friendly Neighbor, Spucket, Feet Up, and Human Knot. After the icebreakers ended, we gathered into groups of 3-5 to begin cleaning up the beach. Each group went its separate way to pick up trash in the sand. We found mostly styrofoam, bottle caps, cigarettes, and paper products. While collecting trash, we got the opportunity to meet and get to know the other members in our groups. It was a great bonding experience! Cleaning up the beach together with our fellow giraffes also showcased our amazing teamwork. It was our teamwork that made the event a success! After we finished cleaning up the beach, we further bonded with one another by spending the rest of the day together. We learned how beneficial our service is to those in the beach environment, especially to the creatures that live in the ocean. We were happy to have had the opportunity to help keep sea creatures safe and healthy. Caring, inclusiveness, leadership, and character-building were witnessed throughout the day.

Concerts in the Park by: Kaitlyn Hall, Upland The Concerts in the Park event was a weekly concert and movie night at Magnolia Park in the city of Upland. Many families in the community came to hear live music and watch their favorite movies in a unique environment. At the event, I felt that many members were able to take responsibility for each job thanks to the guidance of the Kiwanians. The success of the event was also reflected in the number of volunteers who came, which was almost 30 upland members. We managed the snack bars for the event goers with great ease with not a single unhappy customer. Others made snow cones or popcorn, while others dealt with the money box. We also had runners who were vital in the smooth flow of this event. They were always there to bring us a bag of ice or a wet rag. The experience I had here was very positive because of the people I met and the time that I spent with them. I didn't have a single dull moment with the members I volunteered with and it made a great event even greater. It was very fun to bond with members of the Upland Kiwanis and their hearts for service were very encouraging. The optimism and dedication I saw here inspired me to work even harder to set an example for the members that I will meet in the future.
