From The editor!

What’s up D7W! Happy August, the school year has finally begun! As we settle into our online classes, I hope you are all excited for the new club year as well as meeting new members and participing in club meetings! There are going to be a lot of changes this year, but don’t worry, we’re working hard to ensure that it’ll be a fun experience. Recently we have started our Donate for a Challenge fundraiser, where you can challenge any member to do a dare as long as you donate to Key Club’s preferred charities. If you’d like to participate in that check out our Instagram page! Also, we have an upcoming DCM on the 22nd where we’ll be choosing our division’s t-shirt design! I hope you all can make it. Lastly, I wish you all the best this school year. It’s been a strange past few months, but we’ll try to make the best of it! In this newsletter you’ll find more tips and events to stay active in Key Club this year.

From The

ltg!

hey ghoulies! Welcome to the beginning of the school year! I hope you are all as excited to kickoff member recruitment, club meetings, and so much more. While we aren’t on campus anymore, I know we have the innovative talent to be our best during this time. In August so far, we have kickstarted our Donate for a Challenge fundraiser, finished our division t-shirt submissions collection, and established a brand new division Instagram filter! Please also look forward to our August DCM on August 22nd where we will be voting on t-shirt designs and choosing the winner. Also, the Region Training Conference will take place on September 19. The theme is…. *drumroll please*..... Shooting for the StaRTC! Please continue reading this month’s newsletter to find out about the Donate for a Challenge event, July DCM Recap, tips on member engagement, upcoming events, and more!

INDERKUM KIWANIS TALENT AUCTION On July 6th, at 6:30 PM, our key clubbers joined the talent auction with Kiwanis of Greater Sacramento. We prepared ourselves to auction our goods for donations. Little did we know that this event would be highly successful and raised a lot of money! During the month of July, our key clubbers delivered the gifts to our donors. Our key clubbers also made sure to stay safe by wearing masks. In the image, Li takes a picture with Rod Nishikawa, CKM & NP3 Key Club Advisor, after giving him her gift.

After our amazing July DCM,

COLOR A smile

our members continued to work hard and color bright, happy drawings for senior citizens, our troops overseas, and anyone in need of a smile. Coloring cheerful didn’t didn’t just bring joy to those in need, it also proved to be relaxing for many key clubbers. It’s a win-win! Olivia Carrillo is signing off her work in the picture.

Our amazing key clubbers have been writing uplifting messages for hospitalized kids! With our cheerful messages, we spread hope to spread hope, joy, and magic! We’ve created over 40 cards, each of them with a special, thoughtful message inside.

sac blankets for

We partnered with Sacramento Blankets for Sacramento Kids to make warm blankets for kids in Sacramento. These blankets are going to hospitals, shelters, and the homeless. They are also for State emergencies (fires, floods, earthquakes) and National emergencies (9/11, Katrina, shootings). Tovya, a highly dedicated member, spent a large amount of time making blankets for kids in need of warmth. Her beautiful hand knitted blankets will surely make a child in Sacramento very happy! Knitting is another activity that can bring a sense of ease, which benefits our mental health.

SACRAMENTO KIDS

This month, our dedicated members have worked hard to earn grains of rice for the World Food Programme through Freerice. Through countless hours of answering trivia questions, our club has earned over 100,000 grains of rice! Freerice has been an extremely fun way for members to earn service hours. Even though we capped it to a maximum of

two service hours, members are continuing to earn rice to help feed the hungry. Even though social distancing has been challenging, it won’t stop us from helping out the community!

DCM

On Saturday, July 25th, the July DCM was held. The DCM was an effective way to reconnect with other clubs and to stay updated on the events that would take place in August. We were also able to learn more about Key to College and the service project, Donate for a Challenge. In addition, members had the opportunity to earn community service hours by participating in an event called Color a Smile.

During and after the July DCM, members were able to participate in Color a Smile. The members would print out a few pages from the Color a Smile website and then color them in while watching a movie with members from other clubs. All of the colored pages are mailed to troops overseas or senior citizens to help brighten their day.

KEY TO college

On August 8th and 9th, Sacramento State Circle K hosted an event called Key to College. During this event, attendees were able to listen to presentations given by current and past college students. Some of the topics of the presen-

tations include selecting a major, financial aid, advice on how to learn digitally, and time management. Key clubbers were also given the opportunity to ask college students any questions that they may have had. This event was a good way for key clubbers to learn more about college so that they could feel more prepared!

club meeting Most recently, our key club officers had a meeting with our faculty advisor, Ms. Vallesfino, to discuss how we would introduce our club to the incoming Freshmen and how we would recruit members for the new academic year. We determined that we would have a zoom meeting with the Freshmen to introduce our club in a period our school calls a

Earlier in the summer, we agreed that fundraising for the looted businesses during the rioting in the Sacramento area while still supporting Black Lives Matter and COVID safety could be achieved by making Black Lives Matter themed masks to sell and raise money for the businesses in our area. We debated lots of ideas, including having members make masks for hours, or ordering off of customink and having members advertise. We decided that we could get the most involvement if we started this fund raiser in the school year, so there will be more on this event to come.
