DESIGN PORTFOLIO | “Works Release” by: David Lynch, Aug 2005 - present

profile These work samples are a composition of both my academic and external works. Starting an architecture education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in August 2005 and ending in May 2010, the spectrum of work displays urban, building and material/human scales. My interest are in all areas of design and hope to focus at sustainable methods of living and minimizing energy consumption. My future endeavours are focused on satisfying the requirements through professional development to become a licensed architect.

Programatically, the following works cover residential, institutional, exhibition, academic, transportation, field conditions and single occupancy capacities. My thesis project lends to the notion of mixed use and executes a single built hybrid of a “living” and “working” environment testing new typology for “program.”

BUENOS AIRES “VERTICAL ZOO”

PROGRAM: Public Urban Zoo LOCATION: BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA This Sept. - Oct. 2009 competiton requested a design for a new urban zoo through vertical form.

The approach to the project went against the grain to intevene more of a zoo “experience” for then city of Buenos Aires. The inspiration behind the design was a comic strip for a more exciting day to work, including muliple levels and paths that consisted of a virtual continuois observation deck for commuters. Nodes of the city and spaces more accomodating to larger species were segregated for larger cages.

The vertical element of the zoo is a large spire that draws 1 the attention from farther points in the city. The intervention into the urban fabric A is adjecent to a large reservation across from 3 the canal. The canal is easy to cross and conB nects contrasting nodes of 4 an urban hub and a prospected park and reservation.

The green roof installation process examined structual consequences for soil loads and the passive effects of cooling within a building with a green roof. The conclusions of this project were a hybrid operation of continuing designing through more static operations of structural, building systm, and sustainable and site issues.

This Design Development studio adopts the partially completed or schematic stage of another’s work and engages the project to a more developed phase. The primary focuses of the Studio Behnisch project in Italy were structural issues with cantelivers, complex facade design, green roof design, and passive systems through lighting and ventilation. To accomplish these tasks the team used 3D Microstation software to both model digitally and to extract drawings from design development quality stages in the project.

BARCELONA COMPETITION “The In-complete Bridge” LOCATION: Barcelona, ESP | 41°23′N 2°11′E PROGRAM: Mies van der Rohe Pavilion gallery / exhibition / curator offices The design is driven by water pools on the Mies van der Rohe Spanish Pavilio site and connects an “in-complete” bridge of axes formed through four “fingers” or bars. Each bar represents lecture “education,” archive space, gallery, and visitor/cafe desitnation The archives are for the Spanish government, whereas the galleries display the influence of Mies’ work in Spain. Curators’ offices are located in the gallery wings along with visiting faculty and food workers station in adjacent wings. The entrances are depressed below grade and also at grade.

B. ARCH Final Project THESIS TITLE: “Constructive Convergence” ADVISORS: David BELL, Dr. Thomas MICAL This thesis questions the potential of converging programs to reveal tectonic methods of joinery and cohabitation. Constructive Convergence is an expansion of the “in-between” condition of both the “living” and “non-living.” These two environments are realized through the selected programs of student housing and classrooms. They are unfolded to reveal tensions within a residential college complex sited at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.

site transverse section Interior Connections The requirements of the “living,” (sleeping, bathing, privacy) with the less formal and spatially soft conditions of “non-living,” (lecturing, eating, exercising, public), result in a unitary scale juxtaposed with moments of public and interstitial constructs.

ESTACIÓN DE CHAMARTÍN

LOCATION: Madrid, SPAIN PROGRAM: Train station / Urban park The station developed out of this modular development, and both the interior and exterior subscribe to the modular conditions. The interior of the station has modular massing that identifies the programming as well as a break in an otherwise smooth monolithic mass. Likewise, the exterior skin of the station is a smoother facade condition that responds to the interior of the station with the shifting block-like massing.

The smooth exterior skin is a combination of materials, spanning from glass to a more planar panel of plaster. The panels shift in opacity and transparency, and ascribe to the interior massing

Facade Assembly and Function The introduction of a design that is more permeable and singular is more appealing to the endless rays of sun. The permeability is more of a controlled entrance of day lighting, and a play with the ventilation through the subsequent layers along the facade. The solar paths tested on the site during the Spring Equinox at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

The “Urban Mosaic”

The landscape with the urban fabric of Madrid completes a two-part unit for this project. With the tectonic style of orthogonal “tiles” assembling a larger mass similar to the design and dimensions to the train station skin this landscape creates fields, caves, and nooks set for interaction and labyrinths. The material palette ranges from concrete to sedum.

The concrete and wooden planks are for more heavy traffic, whereas the sedum more relaxed spaces.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 1 | LOCATION: WEST 181ST STREET | New York City, NY 40:40°:11’N 73:56°:38’W PROGRAM: MoMA Extension Museum and Offices

A series of galleries is defined through an emerging topographically issue in the Washington Heights district of W. 181st Steet in New York City. The gallery spaces are combined with staging areas for smaller exhibitions and in-house artists under this small Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) extension gallery.

The urban topographical issues of Manhattan are running from north to south. The connection to 182nd Street north of the extention museum is a linkage to separate neighborhoods and combine contrasting city auras and demographics through a this gallery form(ally) inspired by stone quarry composition.

ADAPTABLE INTERIOR WALL Adjustable exterior [to] interior walls The adaptable interior wall is a study into the behavior of operable partition and skin walls. The objective is to engage the motions and preferences of inhabitants and the adjustablity of tubing that shifts from interior to exterior and through rooms.

MOISTURE BARRIER RAIN SCREEN

HOLLOW-CORE CONCRETE SLAB Specific materials both organic and synthetic are chosen to act as the “in-wall” furniture, light tubes, indoor garden pods and rain water collectors. These PLASTIC BEARING STRIP tubes apply to individual spaces for living or working and can be installed with and existing environment internally or applied to a larger system or commune.

Adjustments vary to support water, people, or plant life.

CAMPO MINERAL | LOCATION: Lisbon, PORTUGAL | 41°23′N 2°11′E PROGRAM: Mixed Use - Student Housing, Apartment housing, Office/Research, Row-housing, Hotel, Daycare Lison’s urban growth from the water’s perophery inland has evolved through a system of paths. The urban identity of “old” lisbon city form and a “new” urban one are being tested though the development of segregated nodes of space by car travel and scares of eighteenth and nineteenth century transformation and planning.

Through the “Campo Mineral” development, a new avenue is designed culminating the historic backbone of Lisbon’s development over the centutries shifting to a return to a more permeable cityscape.

With the inclusion of academic, communal, hotel and transportation stations, the new avenue engages the city’s existing network with a new hub of interlaced activities and people.
