L.R.B SITS ON A PROMINENT CORNER IN KL ’ S BUSTLING CHINATOWN. AN URBAN ART DECO BUILDING, IT IMMEDIATELY PIQUES CURIOSITY. BUILT IN THE 1930’S, THE LEE RUBBER BUILDING WAS ONCE HEADQUARTERS FOR THE JAPANESE SECRET POLICE IN WWII.

ONCE THE TALLEST BUILDING IN ITS NEIGHBORHOOD, THE BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED HERITAGE BUILDING EXUDES A CHARISMA THAT IS HEIGHTENED BY ITS MODERN SETTING A GLANCE ABOVE REVEALS A CONFIDENT AND CRITICAL ARCHITECTURAL ADDITION TO THE BUILDING THAT IS IMPRESSIVE AS IT IS RESPECTFUL.SUBTLE AND DISCREET SIGNAGE ON THE BUILDING ’ S FACE CATCH THE OBSERVANT EYE ARTFULLY ILLUMINATED AT NIGHT, IT LENDS A FRIENDLY GLOW TO THE BUSY STREETS BELOW.

ELSE RETREAT

THE APPROACH OF THE DESIGN IS INSPIRED FROM THE IDEA THAT DUALITY EXISTS WITHIN US ALL THUS, TRANSCENDS ITSELF NATURALLY INTO THE CONCEPTUALIZATION OF THE SPACES WITHIN THE HOTEL AND ITS INTERIORS. THE PAST AND PRESENT; THE LIGHT AND DARK; RAW YET REFINED. A SERIES OF MULTI-LEVELED ATRIUM SPACES ARE PUNCHED THROUGH THE FLOORS OF THE EXISTING BUILDING TO EXPAND THE SPREAD OF NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION INTO THE CORRIDOR SPACES LEADING TO THE HOTEL ROOMS. THE NEW EXTENSION RISES QUIETLY ABOVE, DESIGNED TO HOVER OVER THE HISTORICAL MASS THAT SUPPORTS IT. THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE NEW EXTENSION IS DIFFERENTIATED THROUGH THE SERIES OF VERTICAL FINS THAT CAST SHADE AND LEND PRIVACY

THE BELLHOP COUNTER IS SITUATED RIGHT BESIDE THE HOTEL ENTRANCE FOR BETTER CONVENIENCE AS HOTEL PORTER HELPS PATRONS WITH THEIR LUGGAGE WHILE CHECKING IN OR OUT.

WE HAVE CREATED A PERFORATED STEEL POWDER COATED IN SELECTED COLOUR. THERE IS A HIDDEN DOOR THAT WILL LEAD TO A TEMPORARY STORAGE FOR PATRONS TO STORE THEIR LUGGAGE PRIOR/AFTER CHECKING IN/OUT OF

ON THE CABINETRY DOORS,CEILING & WALL PANELING, IT CAN ALSO IMPROVE THE ACOUSTIC OF THE INTERIOR.

INTERPRETATION

: -

In this project, we have challenged to apply fabric as a part of the installation. By implementing fabric into the design, it portrays the flexibility of change in Royce in allows chocolate to take on different form henceforth infinite tasting experience from a single element - chocolate.

_BRIEF

ROYCE' was founded in Sapporo in 1983. Through acquiring the best techniques and enriching our experience, we are able to make chocolate of world-class quality in Hokkaido where the climate and the clean air are ideal for making confections. The fundamental principle of Royce' has been and will always be the painstaking sourcing of high quality ingredients.

For the purposes of illustration only, the following would all be viable responses: – a renewable material for furniture – a quick solution for a library space – an installation that can be rearranged to change the character of a space

Request for better product/merchandise display that resonates their brand identity.

BRAND IDENTITY?

MINIMALISTIC is always interpreted in Royces’ retail design outlets around the world, therefore the additional installation for product display will surround this intial concept and improvised a better design for the client.

INTERPRETATION

Royce has always adhered to their strong foundation of basic principles in making good quality chocolate and with that strong foundation, many different creation was possible. By implementing the same principle of simplistic into the installation, the contents become apparent only gradually.

USER EXPERIENCE : -

The main entrance is welcomed by the reception counter where procedures such as pick up, ordering, accounting management, shipping of products, further collaboration etc. are managed. The vacant space leading towards the feature staircase acts as a multipurpose role of morphing according to the needs of the current activities hosted everyday.

Main events that will be held includes: Weekend bazaar, design exhibition, art expo, talks and presentations. Leisure activities such as movie screening and performing arts can also be accommodated.

USER EXPERIENCE : -

The existing outlet is constructed with a wooden finish as a focus, with an original blank backdrop. By incorporating the clients request and utilizing the limited space given,

Wunderwall team has decided to create a suspended installation to showcase the brand identity, which is to suspend selected fabric pieces from customized steel rods and gold clippings for better reinforcement.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS STAGE HUMBLE ORIGIN [DETAILINGS]

CONSTRUCTION COST : -

The initial proposal for the installation was implementing steel rods to suspend from the existing false ceiling. However, due to the exceeding budget during the tender process, the client requested an alternative to create the same outcome and after further discussion of different possibilities: -

Wunderwall team has given a new proposal that requires minimal changes to the current site by only hacking partial of the existing gypsum board to insert plywood reinforcement to support the wooden dowel (initial proposal : steel rod).

MISSION IN HOSPITALITY

At Ceria Hotel, they strongly believe in providing their customers a pleasant and memorable stay. “Its always been about your stay with us, our friendly and helpful staffs will be eager to shower you with our warm and “Ceria” Malaysian hospitality.” Quote from Ceria Hotel official website.

The Ceria Hotel is located a 10-minute walk from the famous Bukit Bintang shopping area and provides comfortable accommodations with bathtubs in the private bathroom. Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the property.

The hotel is located a 15-minute drive from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and from colorful Chinatown. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is an hour and fifteen minutes by car from the hotel.

The rooms at the Hotel Ceria are fully air-conditioned and equipped with a flat-screen satellite TV and ironing facilities. They are beautifully decorated and fitted with comfortable beds.

SITE CONDITION : -

The existing toilet layout was a mere 62sqft space including the disabled toilet and the regular / staff toilet. Furthermore, both of the toilet is separated by three steps above existing floor finish level [330mm ht affl].

The inconvenience of human circulation and the majority of public access to the disabled toilet has infiltrated the priorities of the disabled community.

DESIGN SOLUTION : -

After detailed analysis of existing architectural drawings, the proposal of pushing the existing steps back 5 feet was proved possible to increase the total utility space. Furthermore, by transforming the existing corridor space (53 sqft) to a common sink area creates a sense of unity between the initial separation of space.

A hidden door design was incorporated to the initial storage door to conceal the presence of staff / storage room & public toilet space.

USER EXPERIENCE : -

The main entrance is welcomed by a suspended terrazzo counter that spans approximately 16 feets vertically across the space. This is where reception takes place. This space aims to create a sense of belonging for the travelers that are visiting our country hence away from home.

Original furniture was reupholstered and reused in the scene to allow the value of each piece of furniture to relive in this newly created identity of Ceria Hotel.

DESIGN INPUT : -

Bench seatings and built in backings are newly inserted into the space to create more seatings as requested compared to the original maximum capacity. Due to the expansion works on Ceria hotel and their successful advertising of repackaging their branding title and of course a well

designed environment, more people tend to be interested to stay under their hospitality. The target users tend to gradually attract larger tourists group, resulting to the requirement per se.

USER EXPERIENCE : -

This is where the new entrance for the newly expanded hotel rooms will be. Wunderwall has inputed a tiny concierge for security and reception purposes.

Move-able furniture that is durable was requested by the clients, However, according to the site condition where the original wall in the corner was slanted, a built in booth seating that relates the design from the renovated reception area was incorporated to increase the seating capacity of this area.

DESIGN SOLUTION : -

Blinds with Ceria hotel logo as a simple sun shading device whilst two outdoor fans was also proposed to create a comfortable and cooling environment to the users.

Furthermore, an abundance of potted plants and greens are greatly encouraged by Wunderwall and our clients strongly agreed to this proposition.

SITE CONDITION : -

This is initially a rooftop area where equipments and storage are cluttered. The original scene was also occupied by the hotel workers that needed a quick nap/rest area to freshen up. Furthermore, water is often stagnant as laundry and cleaning up is done by the Islamic workers before they head for their prayers.

Other than that, many existing air ventilations pipe from the building extrudes on top of the roof top, creating a challenging situation in which concealments are needed to be incorporated into our design.

DESIGN INTENT : -

The dining area is separated into 3 types of different seating areas : 1 bench seatings with seat backings incorporated to move-able furniture (2~8 pax), side seatings (2 pax), booth seatings (center planter box), flexible seatings (4 pax). The color is inspired by the earthy tone of Ceria’s identity whereas a touch of turquoise creates a contrast towards the scene.

Even on this level, greeneries are well encouraged to elevate the user experience and comfortability especially in a hot and humid climate like Malaysia.

DESIGN INTENT : -

The space is remained to be open and spaced are divided to be used efficiently and accordingly. The spaces are divided into: 1 gym area 2 washroom area 3 bar area 4 dining area. One of the clients request is to

maximize the user’s space by including more flexible furniture, therefore a proposal of creating move-able shelvings for storage purposes, additionally, seat backings for the bench seatings are also incorporated on the move-able shelvings to create a comfortable dining experience for the users.

Curvy structural elements to create a fun environment in an otherwise angular site.

Using ovals to tie back to the curved language, also to integrate the rounded nature of the two dip cases to the overall design. Pastel blue cladding complements the brand’s theme color.

Overall low partitions cladded in salvaged wood in assorted colors to give the local ‘kampung’ aka village feel to the overall scheme.

Swirly seating area contributes to the fun atmosphere incorporated with comfy seating to make up a welcoming environment.

1. Store design has to be welcoming, able to deliver B&J’s messages, instagrammable and of course FUN!

4. Emphasis on their social role in environmental awareness & freedom of rights movement.

DESIGN INTENT : -

Our client also requested that reclaimed weathered wood is included into the design as it is one of their trademarks but more importantly their intention in sharing/supporting tehe importance of environmental friendly even in the F&B industry.

Blue weathered wood was chosen along the course to represent their identity while the multi-coloured weathered wood tends to express the multi-cultural background of Malaysia.

Also, local elements was encouraged to be incorporated into the scene, therefore, rattan baskets and traditional tiles were used to express the intimacy of Malaysian culture in an international brand.

The curved seating booth was intended to tie back to the curved language, also to integrate the rounded nature of the two dip cases to the overall design. Swirly seating area contributes to the fun atmosphere incorporated with comfy seating to make up a welcoming environment.

USER EXPERIENCE : -

The new outlet was designed based accordingly to the product sold in this small retail outlet which is causing the recent hype in the F&B industrypoke bowl, but this with a local twist that uses natural and quality ingredients to create a healthy & hearty meal yet maintaining the local

flavours that Malaysians love. The design concept given was : Healthy Fast Food Concept Store.

DESIGN IDENTITY : -

These were graphics designed from an external graphic agency assigned by the clients themselves. We were also given some references from the other brands from overseas that they personally admire to aid in our design process.

Just like the brand identity given, Wunderwall was ambitious to explore new colours and fun elements in seatings and moveable furniture for flexible usage of space.
