How Smart Glasses are Aiding Communication for the Hearing Impaired

or the hundreds of millions of people globally living with hearing loss, navigating the world can mean a constant struggle to follow conversations, especially in noisy environments. While traditional hearing aids have been the primary solution, they aren't a perfect fit for everyone or every situation. Now, a new wave of assistive technology is emerging from an unlikely place: eyewear.

Smart glasses are evolving beyond simple notifications and cameras. They are becoming a sophisticated platform for accessibility, branching into two distinct and powerful paths to help the deaf and hard-of-hearing: amplifying sound and transcribing speech.

THE "HEARING" GLASSES: AUDIO AMPLIFICATION

The first approach isn't about captions; it's about creating a more discreet and advanced hearing aid. Companies like EssilorLuxottica, the parent of Ray-Ban, have developed "hearing glasses" (such as their Nuance Audio line) that integrate high-tech audio components directly into the frames.

These devices look like standard prescription glasses but are packed with technology. They use an array of beamforming microphones built into the front of the frames. This allows the glasses to "focus" on the sound coming from the person the wearer is looking at, intelligently isolating their voice while actively reducing distracting background noise. The amplified, clarified sound is then delivered to the user's ears through tiny, open-ear speakers embedded in the temple arms.

The primary benefit is twofold: it provides powerful hearing assistance in a familiar form factor, which helps reduce the stigma some associate with traditional hearing aids. It also leaves the ear canal open, offering a more natural listening experience without the discomfort of an in-ear device.

THE "CAPTIONING" GLASSES: A VISUAL SOLUTION

The second, and perhaps more revolutionary, approach is "captioning glasses." These devices, from brands like Xander or powered by software like XRAI, use augmented reality (AR) to provide a visual, real-time transcription of conversations.

HERE'S HOW THEY WORK:

A microphone on the glasses captures spoken language.

That audio is processed by a powerful AI speech-to-text engine. This processing can happen on the device itself (offering more privacy and speed) or by connecting to a smartphone app.

The resulting text is then instantly projected as captions onto the wearer's lens, appearing to float in their field of vision like a personal subtitle for the real world.

This technology is a game-changer. It provides clarity where amplification alone might fail, such as in extremely loud environments or for individuals with profound hearing loss. It also dramatically reduces the "listening fatigue" that comes from straining to lip-read, which has become even more difficult in a world of face masks and video calls.

THE FUTURE OF ACCESSIBLE EYEWEAR

Both technologies are still evolving. Current challenges include battery life, the accuracy of transcription (especially with accents or in crowds), and social acceptance. However, as the hardware becomes lighter, the AI becomes faster, and the designs become indistinguishable from fashion eyewear, these barriers are quickly falling.

These glasses represent a monumental shift in assistive technology. By offering a choice between discreet amplification and real-time captioning, smart glasses are moving beyond being a simple accessory. They are becoming a powerful tool for empowerment, independence, and inclusion.

Is an iPhone 'Flip' or 'Fold' on the Horizon?

n the rapidly evolving smartphone market, one category has captured the imagination of consumers and the investment of manufacturers: the foldable. Companies like Samsung, Google, and Motorola have already released multiple generations of devices that bend and snap, yet one tech giant remains conspicuously absent from the race.

WHERE IS APPLE?

For years, rumors of a foldable iPhone have been the tech world's most tantalizing "what if." But as we move deeper into the decade, the question is no longer if Apple will release a foldable, but when—and perhaps more importantly, what form it will take. The speculation currently points in two distinct directions: the "iPhone Flip" and the "iPhone Fold."

THE 'FLIP' VS. 'FOLD' DEBATE

According to reports from prominent industry analysts and supply chain sources, Apple is not just exploring one idea; it is actively developing and testing prototypes for both major form factors.

The iPhone 'Flip': This design, mirroring Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, appears to be the frontrunner for the first foldable phone from Apple. It would be a standard-sized iPhone that folds in half (clamshell style) into a highly compact, pocketable square. The primary appeal isn't a larger screen, but portability. This design seems to solve a modern problem: phones are getting bigger, but pockets are not.

The iPhone 'Fold': This book-style device, like the Google Pixel Fold, would open vertically to reveal a much larger, tablet-like display. While Apple is certainly testing this, many experts believe this form factor might not debut as an iPhone at all. Instead, Apple may be reserving this technology for a new category-bending product, perhaps a foldable iPad mini or a hybrid device that blurs the line between an iPad and a MacBook.

WHY THE LONG WAIT? APPLE’S QUEST FOR THE 'CREASE'

Apple's delay isn't due to a lack of capability; it’s a strategic choice rooted in the company's core philosophy: perfectionism. Apple is rarely first to a new market, but it often aims to be the best when it arrives.

The current generation of foldables, while impressive, still has compromises. The most notable is the display crease—the visible and tangible indentation where the screen bends. Sources suggest Apple is unwilling to ship a premium product with such a flaw.

Apple’s numerous patents in this area reveal a focus on creating complex, durable hinge mechanisms that allow the screen to bend without a sharp fold, minimizing the crease. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly waiting for display technology (like ultra-thin, self-healing glass) to mature to a point where it meets their rigorous standards for durability.

RELEASE DATE AND FINAL THOUGHTS

So, when can you actually buy one? Do not expect it this year.

While early rumors hinted at 2025, the timeline has reportedly been pushed back. Top analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo, now suggest a launch in 2026 or even 2027 is more realistic. Apple is taking its time to get the hardware, the software (a specialized version of iOS), and the all-important "feel" of the device exactly right.

When Apple finally does enter the foldable market, it is expected to redefine it. They aren't just building a foldable iPhone; they are waiting until they can build the Apple of foldables.

Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. “We are proud of our longstanding partnership with these incredible organizations that work year-round to support those in need.”

For Meals on Wheels Texas, the $1 million gift will support their efforts to provide nutrition services to homebound seniors. In Texas, 13.6 percent of seniors are at risk of hunger, according to Feeding Texas. Every day, the organization delivers more than 100,000 meals, helping Texas seniors live independently without worrying where their next meal will come from.

“On behalf of Meals On Wheels Texas and the many individuals we serve, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to H-E-B for their generous support. Your commitment to caring for our communities ensures that this vital service can continue reaching our most vulnerable neighbors –especially in these challenging times,” said Olivia Burdick, Board President, Meals on Wheels Texas & CEO, The Center in Boerne. “H-E-B’s generosity not only provides nourishing meals but also delivers hope, connection, and compassion to those who need it most. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership and for the meaningful difference you make every day in the lives of aging Texans.”

exas Southern University has named longtime policy strategist and research leader Calvin Johnson, Ph.D., as the new Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs following a nationwide search.

Johnson joins Texas Southern from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Policy Development and Research where he served 12 years as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research, Evaluation, and Monitoring. In his capacity as Deputy Assistant Secretary, he served as one of the principal advisors to HUD leadership on research, demonstration, and evaluation activities. He oversaw a broad evaluation portfolio, including projects exploring the impact of housing on non-housing out-

“Dr. Johnson’s combination of experience in academia, research, policy, and as a practitioner make him uniquely qualified to lead the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs as it continues to meet the needs of an evolving public affairs ecosystem,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Carl B. Goodman.

He brings over 30 years of leadership in research and policy development. Prior to joining HUD, Dr. Johnson served dual roles as the Associate Director of the Office of Research and Evaluation and the Performance Improvement Officer at the Court Services and Offender Supervision

In addition to these gifts and as part of its year-round hunger relief initiatives, H-E-B also recently held its Help End Hunger donation campaign, which raised nearly $1 million from customers to support Texas food banks. In a separate donation campaign, H-E-B customers helped raise $500,000 for organizations in Texas helping to feed pets in need.

Additionally, throughout November and December, H-E-B will host its annual Feast of Sharing, a series of festive holiday gatherings that serve over 340,000 meals at 34 dinners throughout Texas and Mexico. In the more than three decades H-E-B has held the celebrations, 375,000 volunteers have helped serve nearly five million meals. Additionally, he serves as a Commissioner on the United States Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys.

“Our team at SOPA bears an awesome responsibility to rise to the challenges articulated by Barbara Jordan: ‘The imperative is to define what is right and to do it,’ and by Mickey Leland: ‘We’ve got to help resolve the problems…suffering people need our help.’ I am excited to forge partnerships both within and beyond SOPA that will cultivate academic programming and service opportunities, honoring the enduring legacy of our school’s namesakes.”

Dr. Johnson received a B.A. degree in Sociology from Eastern Washington University. He also earned his master’s degree in Sociology/Research Methods from Temple University and a Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland-College Park.

He assumed the role of Dean effective November 3.

STOP WAITING FOR A "EUREKA!" MOMENT: 5 SIMPLE WAYS TO FIND A BUSINESS IDEA

The best business ideas are often simple solutions to everyday problems, hiding in plain sight. You don't need to look for the "next big thing;" you just need to pay attention to the world around you.

HERE ARE FIVE PRACTICAL WAYS TO FIND A BUSINESS IDEA IN YOUR DAILY LIFE.

1. Solve a Problem You Have

If you have a problem, it's likely that thousands of other people have the exact same one. The founders of Dropbox, for example, were tired of emailing files to themselves and forgetting their USB drives. They built a solution for themselves first.

When you are "Customer Zero," you have a massive advantage. You don't have to guess what your target audience wants—you are your target audience. You understand the pain point intimately and know exactly what a "good" solution looks like.

2. Find Something People Complain About

When you hear someone say, "I wish there was a..." or "I hate it when...," pay attention.

"I hate trying to find a reliable plumber." (Idea: A curated, pre-vetted trade services app.)

"I wish there was a healthy lunch spot near my office that was actually fast." (Idea: A healthy-focused, order-ahead food service.)

Complaints are simply unsolved problems. Your business can be the one to finally solve them.

3. Offer a Skill You Already Possess

What are you already good at? You don't need to build a complex product to be an entre-

preneur. You can sell your expertise.

Are you highly organized? You could start a virtual assistant or professional organizing business. Are you a great writer? You can become a freelance copywriter or content strategist.

This is often the fastest path to profitability because you're leveraging skills you've spent years developing. Your initial investment is low, and your product is your own expertise.

4. Improve an Existing Product or Service

You don't always have to reinvent the wheel. Sometimes, you just need to build a better one. Look at the products and services you already use and ask one simple question: "How could this be better?"

Can it be faster, cheaper, stronger, easier to use, or more convenient?

Google wasn't the first search engine, but it was better. Facebook wasn't the first social network. The coffee shop on your corner doesn't have to be the last; maybe you can open one with better service, a more comfortable atmosphere, or a superior product. A small, meaningful improvement on a familiar idea is often all it takes to win.

5. Turn a Hobby Into a Hustle

If you love baking, you could start a weekend business for custom cakes. If you're a skilled woodworker, you can sell your creations on Etsy. If your passion is fitness, you could become a personal trainer or nutrition coach.

This path allows you to build a business around something you genuinely love. Be mindful of turning play into work, but for many, it's the ultimate dream: getting paid to do what they'd be doing anyway.

Your next big idea probably won't come from a brainstorm. It will come from your commute, your kitchen, or your conversations. Just keep your eyes open.

EDUCATION AND CAREER

than children in high-income families. Families in the highest income bracket now spend approximately nine times as much on out-of-school time activities as families in the lowest income bracket, up sharply from five years ago.

inety-five percent of parents with a child enrolled in an afterschool program are satisfied with that program, and there is overwhelming support for more government funding for after school, according to a new study. But unmet demand for these programs is high in all 50 states, and majorities of middleand low-income families who want after-school programs are being shut out.

The parents of 29.6 million children, more than half the school-age students in the United States, want after school programs for their children – but just 7 million children are currently enrolled. Another 22.6 million children would attend after school programs if they were available. That means three in four of the children (77%) whose parents want to enroll them in an after school program are being left behind. Cost, availability, and accessibility are the barriers families cannot overcome.

Those are among the findings of “America After 3PM 2025,” a report released in October by the After school Alliance. The survey of 30,515 U.S. parents of school-age children finds a wide, and widening, opportunity gap, with children in low- and middle-income families more likely to be without the after school programs their parents want for them

“After school programs give students a safe place to go after the school day ends, boost their academic achievement, help address the youth mental health and chronic absenteeism crises, provide alternatives to screen time, give working parents peace of mind that their children are safe and supervised, and more,” said After school Alliance executive director Jodi Grant. “But there aren’t nearly enough after school programs to meet the need.”

More than 8 in 10 parents agree that after school programs provide opportunities for children to learn life skills like interacting with peers and responsible decision making, and help them develop teamwork, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Eighty-four percent say after school programs allow working parents to keep their jobs or work more hours, and 92% of parents with a child in a program say they are less stressed knowing their child is safe. To learn more about the study, visit afterschoolalliance.org.

“Our country will be stronger and more successful when all children can take advantage of what after school programs offer – but, sadly, this study shows we’re nowhere near reaching that goal,” Grant added. “We need greater support from federal, state and local governments, businesses, and philanthropy. Every child deserves access to a quality after school program.”

How School Meals Lift Students Up for Success

ood insecurity among children in the United States is a critical but often silent crisis that afflicts millions of young lives. In fact, 1 in 5 kids face hunger or food insecurity, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and data from Feeding America shows more than 13 million children in the United States live in “food insecure” homes.

Among the factors fueling this epidemic of child hunger are rising food prices and economic instability, which continue to strain families across the country. Lack of nutritious food is also a major reason students miss school or struggle to stay engaged.

“Child hunger is more than a nutrition issue – it’s a quiet crisis that robs children of

Eczema's True Impact on People of Color: More Than Skin Deep

hen most people think of eczema, they picture a dry, red, inflamed and itchy rash. But on darker skin tones, eczema can look very different, sometimes appearing purple, gray or dark brown. These differences can lead to a missed diagnosis and delayed treatment. This not only worsens the symptoms of this common skin condition, but it can also increase the chances of developing additional allergic conditions. Delaying treatment for eczema can take a toll on mental health as well, causing frustration, anxiety, stigma and emotional stress.

WHAT ARE THE UNIQUE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ECZEMA IN SKIN OF COLOR?

Eczema affects people of every race and ethnicity. However,

their ability to focus, learn and thrive in the classroom,” said GENYOUth CEO Ann Marie Krautheim, MA, RD, LD. “Every child deserves to be nourished, supported and ready to succeed, and the solution starts with a commitment to our nation’s schools.”

American adults agree, according to GENYOUth’s second annual “Youth Hunger & School Meals” survey. Nearly 9 in 10 (86%) believe going to school hungry severely hinders a child’s ability to focus in the classroom. Nearly all respondents (97%) recognize the broader impact of food insecurity on a student’s overall school experience, including low energy or fatigue (84%), difficulty concentrating (78%) and declining academic performance (62%).

What’s more, they connect food insecurity with a range of physical and emotional challenges, including frequent complaints like headaches and stomachaches (68%) as well as heightened levels of anxiety and stress, and lowered self-esteem.

School Meals are Critical to Learning

American adults overwhelmingly believe the solution to hunger in the classroom starts with access to healthy school meals. More than 9 in 10 agree students who eat breakfast regularly perform better in school while most recognize starting the day on a full stomach gives kids an academic edge including better attendance and classroom participation.

There is also strong support for making school breakfast a standard part of the school day, not an optional add-on. For nearly 7 in 10, this is a priority.

Rallying Support to Ensure All Children Thrive

School meals, relied upon by 30 million students for a significant portion of their daily nutrition, according to the School Nutrition Association, provide the milk, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein students need to thrive.

Nutrition security emphasizes both quality and quantity in food intake, highlighting the critical importance of consistent access to healthy options. Innovative approaches like Grab and Go, Breakfast in the Classroom and Second Chance Breakfast have proven highly effective in expanding access to and participation in nutritious school meals.

“In our survey, it is encouraging to see that so many Americans recognize the link between school meals and student success,” Krautheim said. “To unlock every child’s ability to learn and succeed, we must uplift school meals with innovative solutions and rally support from parents and community leaders. Let’s work together to make sure every child is nourished and ready to thrive.”

research shows that people with skin of color are at higher risk of developing eczema and often experience more severe symptoms. Eczema on black and brown skin often doesn't appear as the typical red rash seen on lighter skin tones. Instead, it might look purplish, ashen gray or darker than the surrounding skin. As a result, many patients and healthcare providers may not identify the skin condition as eczema. They may diagnose it as something else or dismiss it as "just a rash." Without proper treatment, eczema can cause patches of lighter or darker skin in people with skin of color. It may also cause the skin to thicken over time. These visible changes can be especially distressing for people of color.

HOW DOES ECZEMA AFFECT MENTAL HEALTH IN PEOPLE WITH SKIN OF COLOR?

A study published in the May 2025 issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology found that adults with eczema are two to three times more likely to have depression and anxiety. For people of color, the emotional burden of living with eczema can be even greater. Barriers such as limited

access to affordable or make it harder for many to get effective treatment. These challenges can lead to worse mental health outcomes. A lack of representation in healthcare, historical and ongoing mistrust of care, and limited medical training on how eczema appears on darker skin tones all contribute to delayed eczema and mental health treatment.

How can I find support for mental health? Many resources are available. When you visit your healthcare provider ask for a referral to a mental health specialist. The EczemaInSkinofColor.org website is a comprehensive educational guide with advice on how to talk with your healthcare provider about stress, self-esteem, anxiety and depression related to your skin condition. You don't have to manage the physical and mental burden of eczema alone. s concerns about childhood obesity and chronic disease reach crisis levels, public health experts are urging Americans to eat more fresh produce.

For the first time in history, more children worldwide are obese than underweight – a reversal driven largely by diets dominated by ultra-processed foods and a shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables, according to UNICEF. It’s not just an issue impacting children. In the United States, adult obesity rates have hovered at approximately 40% from 2021-2023,

WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO DOUBLE DOWN ON LEAFY GREENS

according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fresh produce in the United States has never been safer with extensive federal requirements for leafy greens. Farmers and produce companies have also taken food safety concerns seriously, investing heavily in prevention, testing and traceability systems. Many farmers and food companies voluntarily comply with industry-wide standards. For example, in California, the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA) sets measurable and verifiable standards for the produce industry, further enhancing food safety.

The numbers tell a compelling story about both safety and benefits. Americans consume 130 million servings of leafy greens every day, according to the Western Growers Association. Meanwhile, the evidence linking leafy green consumption to better health outcomes continues to mount.

Research published in the journal “Neurology” found eating approximately one serving per day of leafy greens was associated with slower cognitive decline – equivalent to being 11 years younger in age. A study by the “Institute for Functional Medicine” discovered diets rich in leafy greens sparked DNA changes that reversed biological aging by up to 3.23 years. The cardiovascular benefits extend beyond mortality reduction. A study published in the “European Journal of Nutrition” found consuming 1.5 cups of leafy greens daily could help prevent heart disease in older adults. As has long been documented in medical literature, consuming more fruits and vegetables is associated with lower mortality rates.

“This isn’t just about adding years to your life; it’s about maintaining quality of life and independence as we age. It’s also important to remember that,” said Dr. David Acheson, a medically trained food safety expert who previously served in leadership at both the FDA and USDA. Access to fresh produce has also never been more convenient or varied. From bagged salads and pre-cut vegetables to ready-to-eat fresh cut fruit bowls or vegetable trays, there are countless ways to incorporate healthy foods into diets. These options reduce barriers to healthy eating by eliminating prep time and providing portion-controlled servings that help minimize food waste while making nutritious choices more accessible. This means the real challenge is translating this abundance of fresh produce into better dietary habits and improved public health.

In a nation grappling with obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline, doubling down on fresh produce isn’t just good advice. It’s a public health imperative.

Choices You Make Today May Increase Your Chances of Surviving Lung Cancer Tomorrow

Lung cancer can enter a person’s life like a tornado, creating chaos out of nowhere and leaving them feeling powerless. Nobody chooses to have lung cancer, but thanks to advances in research and treatment, some choices may lower the chances of lung cancer shortening life.

CHOICES THAT REDUCE RISK OF LUNG CANCER

Five out of six lung cancer patients smoked tobacco at one time, and quitting at any age reduces your chances of lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases. There have never been better options to help people quit, including more effective nicotine replacements, medications to curb withdrawal symptoms, and counseling.

Other cancer-causing chemicals can make their way into the air, such as radon or smoke from cooking and wildfires. Test your home for radon and address levels if elevated. Use air filters and wear an appropriate mask to help decrease exposure until the air clears.

CHOICES THAT LEAD TO EARLIER DETECTION

Lung cancer screening can detect disease earlier when treatments tend to be easier on patients and more effective. For people who smoke tobacco or smoked in the past, a yearly CT scan can dramatically reduce a person’s chance of dying of lung cancer. Current or former smokers aged 50 or older should ask their primary care provider about lung cancer screening.

One in six lung cancers happens in someone who never smoked and can sometimes run in families. Currently, there are no screening recommendations for never smokers, but this is an area of intense research. People with an immediate family member, such as a parent or sibling who developed lung cancer as a never smoker, should ask their primary care providers about screening during their yearly check-up, as screening recommendations are likely in the next few years.

CHOOSING BETTER TREATMENT

It is important to include lung cancer experts on your care

team who know all the latest incredible breakthroughs in lung cancer. Experts not only will know the right tests, procedures and treatments to offer you, but will understand what parts of your treatment can be handled close to home and what parts may need to happen in a larger hospital that may have more resources in case something goes wrong. The American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer is an organization that ensures hospitals follow the best practices and have the right people to deliver high-quality care to cancer patients. You can connect with a cancer team at an ACS Commission on Cancer accredited hospital.

CHOOSING A BETTER TOMORROW

Cancer research saves lives. In the past five years the survival rates of patients with advanced lung cancer have quadrupled because cancer research brought us new treatments. However, we have more work to do. In the U.S., more than 120,000 people lose their battle with lung cancer every year, so we must keep looking for a better way. You can help by supporting the people who support medical research - from contributing to research fundraising to advocating with policy makers. Research is our best chance at turning hope into miracles.

The Power Move We Overlook

e live in a world that’s always pushing us to do more, get more, be more. Hustle culture runs deep, and while ambition is a beautiful thing, it can also be a trap. When success is the only scoreboard we watch, we lose sight of what truly keeps us grounded: gratefulness.

Gratefulness is about pausing long enough to recognize what’s real, what’s good, and what’s worth protecting. And in a society where resilience is often our default mode, practicing gratefulness isn’t just healthy — it’s a power move.

IT’S PART OF WHO WE ARE Gratitude shows up in the way we gather, support, and celebrate one another — through shared meals, meaningful conversations, and showing up for each other during life’s highs and lows. It’s intentional. It’s how we create space for reflection, connection, and perspective, even in the midst of chaos.

It’s showing up to clap the loudest for someone else’s win, even when you’re waiting on your own. These aren’t empty gestures — they’re quiet declarations of care, connection, and mutual respect. In a fast-moving world, taking time to truly be present with people is an act of gratitude. It says, “I see you. You matter.” Whether it's lending a listening ear, offering your time, or creating room for joy in the middle of stress — these moments are how gratitude becomes real. It's not about putting on a show for social media. It's about choosing to value people and presence, even when life is noisy, unpredictable, or demanding. Gratitude, at its core, is about intention — and in times of chaos, that intention becomes a stabilizing force.

GRATEFULNESS BUILDS MENTAL STRENGTH

Gratitude shifts mindset. Research consistently shows that people who regularly practice it tend to sleep better, stress less, and strengthen their relationships. But beyond the data, it’s about how we carry ourselves through difficulty.

Gratefulness doesn’t erase struggle — it coexists with it. It doesn’t cancel out grief, stress, or frustration. It simply reminds us that even in the middle of hardship, there is still something holding us up. Even if it’s just the fact that we made it through the day.

GRATITUDE CONNECTS US

None of us gets through life alone. Behind every success is a web of support — mentors, colleagues, family, friends, or even strangers who extended a kindness when we needed it most. Gratitude reconnects us to that truth. It nudges us to reach out and say, “Thank you for being there.” And more importantly, it encourages us to return the favor — not out of obligation, but from a place of appreciation.

Acts of giving, supporting others, and lifting someone up are all extensions of a grateful mindset. When you truly recognize what you've been given — whether it's time, resources, wisdom, or simply the ability to keep going — it naturally creates a desire to pay it forward. Gratitude moves us from internal reflection to outward impact. It’s what turns appreciation into action.

That action might look like mentoring someone who's trying to find their way, sharing knowledge without keeping score, or helping a friend stay afloat when life gets overwhelming. It can be as simple as making space at the table, listening without judgment, or offering encouragement when someone’s confidence is shaken.

Gratitude fuels generosity — not just with money or material things, but with time, attention, and care. It says, “Because someone showed up for me, I’ll show up for someone else.” And in that cycle of giving, we reinforce the truth that we’re all connected. Gratitude that doesn’t just live in words but shows up in how we treat others — that’s where the real transformation happens.

GRATITUDE IN PRACTICE

Gratitude doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. It’s in the quiet moments — noticing the way sunlight hits your desk, enjoying a good laugh, finishing something you thought you couldn’t. It’s writing down three small wins at the end of the day. It’s taking a breath and reminding yourself that you’re still standing.

Gratefulness isn’t about ignoring the mess of life. It’s about not letting that mess erase what’s still good.

And If You Can’t Find Anything to Be Grateful For...

Some seasons are heavy. Maybe you’ve experienced loss. Maybe your mental health is on empty. Maybe the pressure is too much, and nothing feels “good enough” to be grateful for.

If that’s you, know this: you’re not alone, and you’re not failing.

Gratitude doesn’t require joy. It starts with awareness. It can be as small as noticing that you made it out of bed. A deep breath. A moment of quiet. A message from someone checking in. A cup of coffee that warmed your hands.

You don’t need to fake it or force it. Just recognize what’s present. Sometimes, just saying “I’m still here” is not only enough — it’s everything.

This time of year, often brings the same surface-level messages: be thankful, be positive, count your blessings. But this year, let’s go deeper.

There’s a lot happening in the world right now — tension, uncertainty, division. And while we can’t always fix what’s out there, we can check in with what’s happening inside ourselves.

ASK YOURSELF:

What am I truly grateful for — and have I acknowledged it?

Who needs to hear “thank you” from me?

What lessons have I overlooked in my own journey?

Where can I shift from complaint to appreciation?

Because gratefulness is often quiet. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t demand the spotlight. But make no mistake — it’s a power move. It grounds us when the world is spinning. It refocuses our energy from what’s missing to what matters. It strengthens relationships, sharpens perspective, and reminds us of our responsibility — to ourselves and to each other.

We’ve been taught to hustle, push, and chase. But gratitude is a different kind of strength — one that doesn’t drain but restores. One that doesn’t compete but connects.

So, as we close out this year, let’s stop treating gratefulness like an afterthought. Let’s see it for what it truly is: a mindset shift, a tool for growth, and a daily discipline that can shape how we live, lead, and relate. It’s not soft. It’s strategic. And it might just be the most powerful move we’ve been overlooking all along.

SHEALTH & WELLNESS

tress and parenting go hand in hand, but during the holiday season, many parents find their stress levels rising to new heights. Between coordinating schedules, shopping, traveling and managing children’s expectations – plus the disruption to the school routine that everyone had finally settled into – the season can feel more like mayhem than merry.

However, by thoughtfully planning and implementing a few practical strategies, parents can protect their well-being and support their families. Early childhood experts from The Goddard School share guidance to help parents stay grounded and make the most of their meaningful family moments this holiday season.

CLARIFY PRIORITIES

One of the most empowering steps is to decide in advance what truly matters to your family. Consider:

• Which traditions or gatherings are nonnegotiable?

• Are there holiday events you can skip this year without regret?

• What obligations are you taking on out of habit rather than genuine desire? By reducing the number of “must-do” activities, you can avoid overextending your family. It’s OK to decline invitations when your calendar is already full.

ESTABLISH A BUDGET

Holiday spending can weigh heavily on your mind. Create a family holiday budget that includes gifts and activities, then stick to it. Use the opportunity to teach your children about responsible spending and gratitude. Remember, the most meaningful gifts are often those made with time, attention or creativity, not the highest price tag.

SET BOUNDARIES

Stress often arises when family dynamics, expectations or traditions clash. You can reduce this by setting boundaries and communicating them early. Speak openly with the relatives and friends you’ll see about what’s comfortable for your family and what isn’t (e.g., physical space, travel, topics to avoid). Let your children know what to expect, as the lack of routine during this time can be particularly challenging. Modeling clear boundaries helps your children learn to express their own needs, too.

PRIORITIZE YOUR PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH

Amid the hustle, your own basic care often slips, but your well-being is key to being present for others. Consider establishing routines, such as:

• Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours per night whenever possible.

• Nutrition: Keep healthy staples in the mix, even if treats abound.

• Movement: A short walk, stretch breaks or gentle exercise may help reset your nervous system. Stepping outside can be especially helpful.

Also, if illness strikes, listen to your body and give yourself permission to pause. Pushing through tends to backfire.

DESIGN A STRESS RESCUE PLAN

Even the best-laid plans don’t prevent tension or unexpected emotional triggers. Anticipate stress by creating fallback strategies. For example, plan to use a playlist, a quick breathing exercise or a sensory object to help you regroup when your stress escalates. These strategies work for children as well.

If you’re worried about unwanted questions – such as a family member asking about politics or your plans to have another child – rehearse your response in advance with a friend. When these stressful moments arise, having a toolkit gives you a sense of control.

UNPLUG AND BE PRESENT

Use screens intentionally, such as video calling out-of-town family members, rather than passively scrolling. Focus on in-person connection by playing games, telling stories, making crafts or taking walks. Remember to lead by example, as your children are watching. Being fully present at key moments is the one gift your family will remember above all else.

As the holidays approach, the pressure to do it all can loom large. By clarifying priorities, setting boundaries and safeguarding your health, you can minimize stress and maximize joy. That said, even with careful planning, things can go off course, and that’s OK. Practice self-compassion and allow for imperfections. Enjoy every laugh, surprise and even the occasional moment of calm.

For decades, a central debate has raged in gyms and fitness forums: to shrink your waistline, should you head for the treadmill or the squat rack? When faced with this challenge, many people default to what seems logical: hours of cardio. But is that the most effective strategy? The science reveals a more nuanced answer. While both cardiovascular exercise and weightlifting play crucial roles, they attack belly fat in fundamentally different ways.

THE CASE FOR CARDIO: THE CALORIE-BURNING ENGINE

Cardiovascular exercise, or "cardio," is any aerobic activity that gets your heart rate up for a sustained period. Its primary benefit is straightforward and powerful: it burns a significant number of calories during the activity.

When you exercise, your body needs fuel. It first turns to readily available glycogen stored in your muscles and liver. Once that starts to run low (typically after about 20 minutes of moderate-intensity activity), it increasingly turns to your fat stores for energy. This is how cardio directly helps you achieve a caloric deficit. You simply cannot lose fat, from your belly or anywhere else, if you are not consuming fewer calories than you burn.

Research has been particularly kind to cardio in the fight against visceral fat. A comprehensive meta-analysis published in Obesity Reviews found that moderate-to-high-intensity aerobic exercise is highly effective at reducing both visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat, even without a calorie-restricted diet.

The catch? The significant calorie burn from cardio largely stops when you step off the treadmill. While it's an incredibly effective tool for "in-the-moment" calorie burning, it doesn't fundamentally change your body's long-term metabolic engine in the same way its counterpart does.

THE CASE FOR WEIGHTLIFTING: THE METABOLIC MAKEOVER

This is where weightlifting, also known as resistance or strength training, enters the picture. While a 30-minute weightlifting session might burn fewer immediate calories than a 30-minute run, its true power lies in what happens after the workout.

Weightlifting is the single most effective way to build and maintain lean muscle mass. This is the secret weapon against belly fat for two critical reasons:

• A Higher Resting Metabolism: Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Unlike fat, which is largely inert storage, muscle tissue requires calories just to exist. Research estimates that a pound of muscle burns significantly more calories at rest than a pound of fat. As you build more muscle, you essentially upgrade your body’s engine, turning it into a 24/7 fat-burning furnace. This increased resting metabolic rate (RMR) means you burn more calories all day long, even while you sleep.

• The "Afterburn" Effect: Intense resistance training creates microscopic tears in your muscle fibers. Your body must then expend energy (i.e., burn calories) to repair and rebuild that muscle, making it stronger. This process is known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), or the "afterburn." This metabolic boost can last for 24 to 48 hours after your workout, meaning a single weightlifting session is still burning extra calories long after you’ve left the gym.

Furthermore, when you lose weight through diet and cardio alone, you often lose muscle mass alongside fat. This can ironically slow your metabolism, making it harder to keep the weight off. Weightlifting sends a clear signal to your body: "We need this muscle!" This ensures that the weight you lose is overwhelmingly from your fat stores, helping you achieve a leaner, more defined physique.

THE

VERDICT: "VS." IS THE WRONG QUESTION

So, which is better? The answer is clear: the debate itself is flawed. Asking whether cardio or weightlifting is better for belly fat is like asking if a hammer or a screwdriver is better for building a house. You need both tools.

The most effective and sustainable approach to eliminating belly fat is a synergistic combination of both.

• Cardio maximizes your calorie deficit during the workout and directly attacks visceral fat.

• Weightlifting builds the muscle that maximizes your calorie deficit at rest and ensures the weight you lose is fat, not muscle.

This combined approach attacks fat from two angles: it creates a significant, immediate calorie burn while simultaneously building a more metabolic body for long-term success.

For a practical takeaway, if you perform both in the same workout, most experts recommend lifting weights first. This allows you to use your full strength and energy for muscle-building when your glycogen stores are full, making your session more effective and reducing the risk of injury. Follow that with your cardio session to finish burning fat.

Ultimately, the best exercise routine is one you can stick with. But for the fastest, most effective, and most sustainable path to eliminating belly fat, the undisputed champion is not cardio or weightlifting. It's the powerful partnership between them.

Helping Kids Make Money Lessons Real IN THE DIGITAL AGE

In today’s world, it’s rare for kids to hand over a few crumpled dollar bills for a purchase. Most transactions happen online or with a tap of a card, which can make money feel less tangible to the next generation. However, that shift doesn’t mean financial lessons have to get lost – it just means they should be taught differently.

From budgeting for a favorite purchase to learning about investing, the digital landscape provides ample opportunities to help kids build smart habits.

TEACH REAL-WORLD MONEY MANAGEMENT WITH DIGITAL TOOLS

One way to start is with a kid-friendly debit card connected to an app. These accounts allow children to manage their own spending while parents monitor activity. Being able to check balances in real time – and seeing the impact of a purchase immediately – helps kids understand budgeting in a hands-on way. When the balance gets low, the lesson is clear.

Parents can also use digital purchases as teachable moments. A $10 virtual item in a game might sound appealing, but comparing it to something tangible, like a trip to the movies or a special snack, can help kids think about trade-offs and decide what’s worth the money.

Use Saving Goals and Compound Interest to Encourage Smart Habits

Saving is another concept technology can make more tangible. Setting a goal such as a new bike, a sports jersey or a piece of tech becomes more engaging when children can track their progress visually. Some apps even offer interest on savings, giving kids a first glimpse of how money can grow over time.

As children grow into teens, their curiosity about money often expands into investing. This can be an ideal time to open a custodial brokerage account and explore concepts like diversification, risk and long-term strategy. Purchasing fractional shares of companies they recognize can make the learning process relatable.

TEACH CREDIT, DEBT AND SECURITY EARLY

It’s also important to cover topics like credit, debt and security before kids start managing money on their own. Teens should understand how borrowing works, why paying bills on time matters and how to protect themselves from identity theft. In some cases, freezing a minor’s credit until they are older can be a smart precaution.

KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING

Above all, money lessons should be an ongoing conversation. Asking kids what they’re hearing from friends, teachers or online sources can lead to meaningful discussions and create teachable moments.

The tools may have changed, but the goal remains the same: helping kids develop the skills and confidence to manage money wisely. By meeting them where they are in the digital world, parents can make financial lessons real, relevant and lasting.

Visit schwabmoneywise.com for more ideas on how to help kids start saving, investing and more with videos, quizzes and articles designed especially for teens.

Planning for the Future to Protect Generational Wealth

n the coming years, baby boomers are poised to pass down an estimated $17 trillion in home equity to their children, according to a recent Freddie Mac survey. But whether or not you’re among the 75% of homeowners in this generation planning to leave your current home or the proceeds from a home sale to family members when they pass away, having a clear estate plan is critical to ensuring your wishes come to fruition.

IWithout one, your future heirs may face complex ownership issues, potential legal disputes and even the loss of family property.

To help your family plan for the future and protect generational wealth, Freddie Mac is sharing information about some of the pitfalls that may occur in the absence of an estate plan, as well as steps you can take to protect the wealth you’ve built over your lifetime.

TANGLED TITLES

Heirs’ property, also referred to as a tangled title, is created when a family member dies without a will or court document passing their property to a specific heir or heirs. When this happens, the property may be transferred by inher-

itance to multiple family members who each have equal rights to use and occupy the property. Unfortunately, this can lead to messy legal disputes among family members, limited access to resources, and loss of generational wealth due to forced sales or costly legal battles.

These disputes are common in this scenario because each heir has shared responsibilities regarding the property. For example, all heirs will be expected to contribute to property-related taxes and upkeep, which can become difficult to manage collectively. Additionally, major property decisions often require agreement among all heirs, which can make it difficult to maintain, improve or sell the property.

As generations pass, the property may be further divided among new heirs, complicating ownership even more. Lacking a clear legal title, heirs often struggle to qualify for resources like home equity loans or disaster relief funds,

leaving properties vulnerable to foreclosure or forced sales.

AVOIDING HEIRS’ PROPERTY

Planning for the future helps prevent legal and financial complications like heirs’ property. Here are steps to take to protect your family’s property and wealth:

• Create a will or trust. Work with a trusted legal advisor to create an estate plan that can ensure your property is passed down as intended.

• Establish a power of attorney. Appoint someone you trust to manage your property and financial affairs in your absence.

• Develop a wealth management plan. This can help you and your family prepare for unexpected situations and emergencies.

• Get smart about estate plans and other wealth management topics. Freddie Mac CreditSmart Essentials, a customizable and free online course, has all the tools, resources and lessons you need to help achieve your financial goals.

Taking proactive steps in estate planning is crucial for protecting your assets and ensuring they benefit future generations.

7 Energy-Saving Tips:

Simple steps to help homeowners cut utility bills

all is the perfect time for homeowners to take simple steps to lower utility bills, improve comfort, and take advantage of available rebate programs. While 71% of homeowners say energy efficiency is important, according to research from the Alliance to Save Energy, fewer than 35% consider their homes efficient.

Plus, heating and cooling account for 50-60% of total household energy use, and more than half of U.S. homes remain under-insulated with outdated HVAC systems. With colder weather on the way, a few smart changes now can pay off all winter long.

Consider this expert-backed guidance from the experts at Midea to help improve home efficiency:

1) Seal it up: Air leaks around windows, doors and attics can account for up to 30% of heating loss, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Use weatherstripping and caulk to prevent waste. Adding attic insulation is another small investment that can lead to major energy savings.

2) Smarten your thermostat: A programmable or smart thermostat can automatically adjust heating schedules and save up to $180 per year.

3) Upgrade your filter: Replace HVAC filters monthly during peak seasons to improve airflow and reduce system strain.

4) Invest in efficiency: Replacing aging systems with high-efficiency heat pumps can cut heating costs by up to 50% while also providing energy-efficient cooling in summer.

5) Explore new technologies: Consider a next-generation heat pump that is designed to deliver reliable heating even in sub-zero temperatures. For example, the Midea EVOX All Climate Heat Pump provides 100% heating output down to -31 F and continues oper-

ating at -40 F, making it an option for families across the country who want to be more energy efficient.

Compact plug-and-play technology solutions like the Midea packaged window heat pump (PWHP) can offer an efficient upgrade option for apartment renters or multifamily housing. These can be installed in less than an hour and plug into most standard outlets.

6) Take advantage of rebates: Federal, state and local utility programs can help consumers save thousands on energy-efficient upgrades, such as qualified heat pump systems. Check available offers before making a purchase.

7) Look for the CVP rating: Choose a heat pump tested under the new Controls Verification Procedure to help ensure the efficiency you see on paper translates to actual savings at home. The first manufacturer worldwide to have its systems certified to this new standard, Midea gives families added confidence in their real-world performance.

Fall may go by quickly, but the habits it encourages can deliver benefits year-round. When homeowners stay mindful of efficiency, they save money, support a more reliable energy grid and create a more sustainable future for their families. From quick DIY fixes to advanced heat pump technology, families have more tools available to take charge of their energy use and choose solutions that fit their lifestyle.

An adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) is often discussed as an option to help lower initial costs and increase flexibility, particularly in a highcost housing market. However, it’s important to understand how these loans work, their potential risks, and strategies for managing adjustments over time.

ARMS 101

An ARM is a loan with an interest rate that will change throughout the life of the mortgage.

ARMS HAVE TWO DISTINCT PERIODS:

The initial period: This period lasts between three to 10 years after you receive your loan, during which time the interest rate on your loan doesn’t change. It’s also known as the fixed-rate period. The most common ARM terms have initial periods of three, five, or 10 years.

The adjustment period: Once the initial period ends, your loan will adjust. All ARMs have adjustment periods that determine when and how often the interest rate on your loan can change. Your adjusted rate will be based on your

The name of your ARM will indicate the duration of the initial period and how often in a year your rate can adjust. For example, the most common adjustable-rate mortgage is a 5/6 ARM. This means you will have a fixed-rate period of five years. After that, you can expect your ARM to adjust once every six months.

ARMs also typically offer a rate cap structure, consisting of these three different caps, which limit how much your rate can increase or decrease:

Initial cap: Limits how much your rate can increase when your rate first adjusts.

Periodic cap: Limits how much your rate can increase from one adjustment period to the next.

Lifetime cap: Limits how much your rate can increase or decrease over the life of your loan.

Let’s say you have a 5/6 ARM with a 2/1/5 cap structure. This means that after your initial period expires, your rate can increase by a maximum of 2 percentage points above the initial interest rate. Every adjustment period thereafter, your rate can adjust a maximum of 1 percentage points. Over the life of the loan, it can never increase more than 5

WHEN TO CONSIDER AN ARM

ARMs typically provide lower mortgage rates during the initial period, which can translate into significant savings. This could be a good choice if you plan on moving or selling within five years — or before the adjustment period of the loan — or if interest rates are high when you buy. You could also select an ARM if you plan to refinance before the initial period ends. Just be sure to account for refinancing costs, which are similar to the costs you pay when closing on your home purchase. Additionally, some ARMs require you to pay penalties upward of several thousand dollars for refinancing early.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR ADJUSTMENT

Freddie Mac’s Adjustable-Rate Mortgage Calculator can help you determine how much your monthly payments may cost over the life of the loan. With this knowledge handy, you can budget ahead of time for even the highest rate adjustments allowable according to your loan’s terms.

When it comes to mortgages, you have options, making it important to carefully consider the features and benefits of each type of loan.

Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE DOUGH

News Provider

n Thanksgiving Day, one of the most difficult things to do is to decide what to eat when it’s not the actual holiday meal. Or, if you’re my family, you simply don’t eat all day, and you wait until everyone is at the absolute brink of breaking to finally sit down and eat.

If you’re a family that actually values peace on the holiday, consider making these sweet potato cinnamon rolls for breakfast and as a fun snack/treat throughout the day. Not only does replacing this breakfast classic with a sweet potato base stay in theme with the holiday, but it provides a heartier meal that’s guaranteed not to ruin your appetite with heaps of sugar. Also, you can make these a few days ahead of time to prepare for a busy day of cooking!

INGREDIENTS FOR THE DOUGH

• 1/4 oz active dry yeast 2 1/4 tsp total

• 1 tsp granulated sugar

• 1/4 cup warm water about 115F

• 4 cups all-purpose flour plus more for rolling

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar

• 3/4 tsp kosher salt

• 3/4 cup sweet potato puree

• 1/4 cup whole milk room temperature

• 6 tbsp unsalted butter melted

• 1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk room temperature

INGREDIENTS FOR THE FILLING

• 3/4 cup dark brown sugar

• 1 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon

• 1/4 tsp kosher salt

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter room temperature FOR THE BROWN BUTTER CREAM CHEESE GLAZE

• 8 tbsp unsalted butter

• 8 tbsp cream cheese very soft

• 2 cups powdered sugar

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/8 tsp sea salt

• 3 tbsp milk up to 4

• 1/2 cup pecans toasted and chopped

Step 1 In a small bowl, combine active dry yeast and sugar. Stir in warm water. Let sit for 10 minutes and a 2-inch head of foam should appear on the top. (This is a good sign that your yeast is active and ready to be used.)

Step 2 Meanwhile in the bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, add 2 cups flour, sugar, salt. Mix on low for 30 seconds until evenly combined.

Step 3 Add in sweet potato puree, milk, melted butter, yeast mixture, eggs, and mix on low until ingredients start to come together, about 1 minute.

Step 4 Add in remaining 2 cups flour and mix on medium until all the flour is absorbed and a dough begins to form, about 2 minutes. Turn up the mixer to medium high and mix for 7-8 minutes. A taut ball should form and the sides and bottom of the bowl should be empty.

Step 5 Remove dough from the mixer, shape into a ball, then place into a glass or metal bowl sprayed with nonstick spray. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and leave in a warm spot for 1 hour. The dough should double in size.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ASSEMBLY

Step 1 While dough is proofing, combine dark brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl.

Step 2 Prepare a 9x9x3 pan by spraying the bottom and sides with nonstick baking spray.

Step 3 Once your dough has doubled in size, chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Step 4 At this point, you’ll want to work quickly, so your dough stays chilled and the filling doesn’t become messy as you roll and cut. Once chilled, set dough on a lightly floured work counter and roll into a 14x17 inch rectangle. (Make sure as you roll out your dough, you ensure it’s not sticking to the counter.) The long side of the rectangle should be facing you/even with your counter top.

Step 5 Using your offset spatula, spread softened butter across the surface of the dough, leaving a 1-inch space at the bottom uncovered.

Step 6 Sprinkle brown sugar mixture on the surface. Press lightly into the butter so it

Step 7 Starting from the top, quickly roll your dough into a log, careful to keep it even as you roll towards the bottom. Once your dough is completely rolled up, pinch the bottom uncovered edge into the dough, so it’s sealed. Position your log so the seal is on the bottom.

Step 8 Using unflavored dental floss, trim ½ inch dough from both edges of your log. Then cut your log into 9 even pieces and place each piece cut side up in the prepared pan.

Step 9 Cover the pan with either a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and place in a warm spot to rise for 40 minutes. The rolls should be almost doubled in size and look plump. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 F.

STORING LEFTOVER CINNAMON ROLLS

These can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 days. Alternatively, you can refrigerate the rolls for up to 7 days but in an air tight container. The key to maintaining freshness is using a reliably air tight container.

To Freeze: wrap your cinnamon rolls in saran wrap or foil and place them in a freezer bag. Keep the bag in the freezer for up to 4 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat using your preferred method: microwave, oven, toaster oven, etc.
