Spring SEASON 2016

Welcome to Mountview’s Spring Season

MOUNTVIEW: excellence, access and innovation We are one of the UK’s top drama schools. We deliver the most pertinent training for an everchanging industry. We are committed to training the most talented people regardless of background or income. We work in collaboration with the finest established and emerging creative practitioners to create challenging new work.

In 2015 we celebrated our 70th anniversary. To safeguard our future we are planning a new unified school and theatre in the heart of Peckham in south London. The new home will befit the quality of our training, allow us to expand our outreach programmes and include studio and rehearsal spaces for professional and community groups. Our hardship fund helps students with severe financial difficulties pay for vital costs related to their training. If you would like to support this fund please visit mountview.org.uk/supportus

A backstage battle between former lovers Fred Graham and Lilly Vanessi spills on to stage as they mount a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew. And just when things couldn’t get worse, up pop a pair of gangsters who want to share the limelight! Cole Porter’s classic musical comedy is brimming over with some of musical theatre’s greatest songs, including Too Darn Hot and Brush Up Your Shakespeare. Darren Lawrence trained as an actor at Central School Of Speech and Drama and was most recently seen in Russell T. Davies’ critically acclaimed Cucumber for Channel 4. He has directed at Mountview for over 10 years.

Compassion trumps cruelty in this award-winning show from contemporary musical theatre writers Pasek and Paul. Adam Welsh is a performer, director and founder member of award-winning theatre company Dead Centre. In 2014 Dead Centre won Best Production for Lippy at the Irish Times Theatre Awards and in 2015 received a special citation at the OBIE awards in New York. Adam also regularly develops new work at the National Theatre Studio and has directed many shows for Mountview including Spring Awakening.

Arthur Miller’s classic drama sees a small and pious American town gripped by suspicion and hysteria following accusations of witchcraft. Based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and written as an allegory of the McCarthy blacklists of the 1950s, The Crucible is a powerful study of the combustibility of community. Caitriona McLaughlin is an Associate Director at the Playgound Studio London and was instrumental in creating the Royal Court’s Theatre Local project. Recent directing credits include Monsters Dinosaurs Ghosts (Abbey Theatre) Luck Just Kissed You Hello (Hot for Theatre/Galway and Dublin Theatre Festivals) and She Knit the Roof (Earagail Arts Festival).
