INTRODUCTION

Dear friends of the Czech Centre London, I am delighted to present the Czech Velvet Festival featuring a mixture of movies, plays, music, visual art and lively debates and discussions to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the profound political, social and economic changes that swept across Central and Eastern Europe in November 1989. In the country of the Czechs and Slovaks, combined at that time, this period of change became known as the ‘Velvet Revolution’. Why Velvet?

In the Czech language ‘velvet’ represents the peaceful transition from an authoritarian one party state to parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech, movement, artistic

expression and other liberties which are the cornerstones of many western democracies. We can never remind ourselves and the younger generation enough how our societies have evolved, how our values were formed and how the principles of governance developed. I believe, particularly in today’s world, that the idealism, commitment and determination for individual freedom that the Velvet Revolution represented is still relevant and inspirational.

The Czech Velvet Festival celebrates this spirit of freedom in many artistic forms. It will be opened by a photographic exhibition capturing the essence of November 89 and the unique Touching 1989 project that presents video testimonies to the ways in which the Velvet Revolution

altered people’s lives. The musical Velvet Havel portrays in an unorthodox way probably one of the most iconic leaders of these political and social changes, Václav Havel, who, from being a dissident and playwright, became the first democratically elected president of our country since WWII. The Made in Prague film festival will feature numerous film screenings created by talented Czech directors some of whom were professionally impacted by the pre-1989 climate and atmosphere, while providing a contrast with the new generation of free-spirited film makers. The Festival will also be a platform for discussions and debates led by acclaimed experts on topics which may have arisen 30 years ago, but remain acutely topical today, such as national identity, individual responsibility, freedom of speech, the role of the media and fake and manipulated information.

In areas of science and innovations the Czech Centre presents in a creative technological masterpiece — Czech Innovation Expo scientific discoveries as well as a future of modern technology. The Festival closing gala

will be shared with our good friends from Slovakia, Hungary and Poland in a concert of electronic music on the main stage at Rich Mix. As the Festival celebrates the zest for freedom and a journey to the soul of our democratic Europe, it might be both an inspiration and a sanctuary to our marvellous British friends.

The End of the Totalitarian Regime in Czechoslovakia

The exhibition curated by photographer Dana Kyndrová brings together photographs by 13 leading Czech photographers capturing ground-breaking moments in modern Czech history 30 years after the fall of the communist dictatorship: the demonstrations against the totalitarian regime in 1988, ‘Palach Week’ in January 1989; the student protests of 17 November 1989 and the exhilarating atmosphere that followed. Many of these photographs have now become iconic images documenting the peaceful civic resistance which transformed political domination by one party into a pluralist democracy and made Václav Havel president of Czechoslovakia.

Touching 1989 Reflections & Recollections

ORAL RY HISTO 30 years ago, the events of 1989 redrew the political map of Europe, affecting the lives of millions. Looking at those historical moments and their aftermath from today’s perspective the Touching 1989 project combines videoed personal stories of Czech, Slovak, Polish and British people of all backgrounds and of all ages currently living in the UK into one strong voice, testifying to the changes we have experienced within the last 30 years. Jan Patočka and the Grounds for Political Action

FILM & SION DISCUS Tom Roberts, UK — Channel 4, 1988, 60' Leading historian and political scientist Jacques Rupnik and multi-award winning documentary film director Tom Roberts revisit their 1988 revolutionary Channel 4 documentary series which revealed the impact of 40 years of communist rule on the nations of the ‘Other Europe’. Written and narrated by Jacques Rupnik, this programme examines power, ideology, resistance, art and the traumas of the totalitarian experiment using interviews with leading opponents and extracts of their work. Recalling what it was like for a Western crew filming in communist countries on the brink of collapse, meeting filmmakers Andrzej Wajda, Jiří Menzel, writers Václav Havel, Josef Škvorecký, and young Viktor Orbán, the panelists will discuss the notion of the Other Europe post 1989 and in relation to the current political climate.

The conference explores the contributions of Czech philosopher Jan Patočka to our understanding of whether and how meaningful political action is possible — taking cues from his phenomenology, his essays on arts and culture, his writings on Europe, and his conception of sacrifice. The day will feature Patočka scholars and academics who worked underground in the former Czechoslovakia. A topical introduction to the ideas of this fascinating philosopher, offering novel ways of reflecting on our contemporary political crises. Followed by an event which will include a performance by the acclaimed Echéa Quartet, short talks, poetry in English translation and fine art images.

EX HIBI TION Czech contemporary artist Barbora Balek exhibits at Modern Panic, an annual exhibition of surreal, controversial and provocative art curated by Guerrilla Zoo founder James Elphick. The exhibition brings together over 70 visual artists and live art practitioners offering a commentary on our contemporary world and the darker reaches of human nature with works that shock, disturb and confront.

From Nowhere To Nowhere, Balek's kinetic installation of an imaginary race course where dictators Hitler, Mao Zedong, Stalin and Kim Jong-un, who manipulated the course of the past century impacting the lives of millions, now become pawns on the boards themselves, fits right in.

The 23rd edition of the not-to-be missed Made in Prague Festival returns with an exciting range of new films mapping contemporary Czech society. Opening with the comedy miniseries Most!, an exhilarating and provocative portrayal of a local community and the biggest cultural and social phenomenon since 1989, and closing with The Nagano Tapes, the stirring underdog story of the Czech ice hockey team's surprising victory at the 1998 Olympics and a source of national pride, the festival presents three days jam-packed with features, documentaries and shorts that inspire, entertain and provoke discussion while showcasing the diverse landscape of Czech cinema.

A provocative and politically incorrect comedy miniseries, Most! advertised as They Love Each Other but They Do Not Know It Yet, has won over the Czech TV audience and became the most talked-about show of 2019. Set in the city of Most it revolves around pub bum Luďan, who owes money to the local mafia boss, but has just lost his job thanks to his racist comments. Finding refuge in the local pub, Luďan spends his time drinking beer with his mates: Eda, the owner of the ‘only-for-whites’ pub; an excommunicated priest; and Franta, a Romany who is the only one able to pay his bill. A local, sleepy community changes forever with the arrival of Luďan's brother, now turned into an energetic sexy blonde, and triggers a merry-go-round of lies and improvisations.

A celebration of the life and work of Jiří Suchý, performer, singer-songwriter, writer, composer and poet whose songs and plays span generations and who has become a Czech national icon. It looks back at the more than 60 years of Suchý's creative life associated with his legendary Prague Semafor theatre and inspired by Laurel & Hardy, Czech theatre gurus Voskovec & Werich and British comedian George Formby. Playing the accordion, reading his funny stories and poetic texts full of surprising rhymes, Suchý is an engaging, gossipy presence, enjoying the good times, not concentrating on the bad ones for long. This is a portrait of a man full of humility who has dedicated his life to the theatre and music and who, despite his struggles with the communist regime and personal tragedies, has never lost his optimism and humour.

His eldest son is a member of a paramilitary youth group, and involved in the death of a classmate. As he starts to investigate, Milan calls into question the deep-rooted traditions of his faith and village realising that he must overcome his own failings before he can protect his son from being led astray. This compelling drama about the strength and fragility of family ties addresses far-right extremism through the prism of a family raising its children. Winner of the Best Actor Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Slovakia's entry for the Oscars.

Vlasta and Tonda, WWII veterans and ex political prisoners, now elderly and infirm, have one last mission — to find and kill the communist prosecutor who once jailed them and escaped justice. Gearing up for the job with an old pistol and a rusty camper-van, the would-be assassins set off on a cross-country vengeance trip accompanied by Tonda's beloved dogs. Deploying a grumpy old man act, their age and Vlasta's wheelchair to manipulate the authorities and their caring families, they try to right old wrongs. Full of oddball humour and empathy for the unlikely heroes fighting for justice, this bitter comedy with excellent performances successfully combines a road movie with a revenge thriller.

The Lucky Four — Fifinka, Pinďa, Bobík and Myšpulín — live in a small house in the picturesque village of Třeskoprsky. One cosy night, sitting around a camp fire in their garden, they share stories of the best adventures they had last year: a successful climbing trip to the Devil's Thumb, tracking a mysterious werewolf, a trip to outer space full of rubbish and pirates, and delivering presents to the devil's children on St Nicholas's Day. While faithful to the original style, mystical creatures, pirates and local villain Kamil Zádrhel together with Myšpulín’s wonderful inventions refresh these four short stories with new thrills and frights suitable even for preschool children. Inspired by the most famous of Czech comics for children, this is a 50th anniversary present for the Lucky Four’s many generations of fans.

Cherrry-picked from the Venice, Berlin and Annecy International Film Festivals, including the winner of the 2019 Student Academy Awards, this selection showcases the best Czech animations from FAMU, one of the top international film schools.

The animated black comedy Happy End offers an overview of stereotypical Czech characters while The Kite is a touching tale of a boy and his grandfather and Hide N Seek pulls the viewer into the surreal world of the human subconscious.

The puppet drama Daughter about a strained father/daughter relationship and the limits of mutual understanding contrasts with the animated documentary Apart dealing with life after the loss of loved ones and the contemplation of womanhood in Woman's Day while Bloody Fairytales transforms classic tales into an homage to the movies of both Lotte Reiniger and Quentin Tarantino.

The uplifting story of the Czech Republic men's ice hockey team's surprise victory at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where professional players participated in the Games for the first time. The underdog squad from the Czech Republic led by Jaromír Jágr and Dominik Hašek stunned the world on its way to an historic gold. Their triumph in Nagano is recognised as a defining moment and a source of national pride at a time of the country's resurgence. FILM An hommage to the first lady of time-lapse documentaries, Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková, whose impressive film career spans over 40 years and features more than 50 documentaries including the European Film Academy the Prix Arte 2008 winner, René.

Following people's stories over the course of several years even decades, Třeštíková builds up character studies of her protagonists full of openness and intimacy whether they are married couples (A Marriage Story), young delinquents (René) or women (Mallory). Finding the universal in her subjects and their life dramas, an unsensational excitement in these adventures of the ordinary, Třeštíková plays witness to human condition evolving before our eyes while celebrating the time similarly to Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood.

FILM Miloš Forman, Oscar winning film director and charismatic storyteller spins with gusto his American-style success story exploring the twists of fate and turning them into a narrative of one individual's never-ending fight for freedom against authority. An orphan after he lost his parents to concentration camps, Forman became a leading Czechoslovak New Wave filmmaker only to start all over again in America following his emigration. His impoverished early years in the Chelsea Hotel in New York are juxtaposed with Hollywood success with the Oscar winning One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, and his own testimony with that of Michael Douglas and others. In a revelatory collage of rare private and official archives, together with autobiographical memories narrated by his son Petr, Forman muses on his love of film and freedom revealing a courageous artist unafraid to question himself. Mallory made a promise to herself to quit drugs and live a better life for the sake of her new-born son. But a drug-free existence proves harder than she thought.

For 13 years Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková followed this strong, caring woman as she battled through toxic relationships, endless knock-backs from the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of social services and having her son committed to a psychiatric facility. Despite living in her car and being rejected from all angles, Mallory keeps pushing to get off the street and help others around her. A mesmerizing portrait of a woman's life on the fringes of society and a true testament to human resilience.

This time-lapse documentary follows 35 years of ups and downs in the married life of Václav and Ivana Strnad. From newlywed fresh-faced architectural students living in a cramped socialist-era flat in 1980, they become parents of five children, and post 1989 business owners with a family house to match. Coping with children's rebellions and Ivana's depression, the Strnads keep persevering until a deep marital crisis shakes the foundation of their relationship. Their daily routine is played out against the dramatic backdrop of political and social change where moments of absolute harmony mix with dramatic fights and shocking revelations in this astute and empathetic portrait of family life unfolding in front of the camera.

For its November edition, Dash Café, a popular monthly event featuring conversation, live performance, film and music, will explore the long term impact of the 1989 revolution that caused the collapse of the Soviet Union. Through the prism of artists, filmmakers and writers from across the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it will explore whether that extraordinary spirit of activism still exists today. Speakers include Monika MacDonagh-Pajerová, diplomat and former spokesperson for the Student Strike Committee; Ondřej Štindl, journalist, writer, award-winning screenwriter and DJ; Tereza Nvotová, actress and director of the documentary Mečiar; and Zuzana Kepplová, columnist, writer and editor of the opinion section of the leading Slovak newspaper, SME.
