The Art of Cooking Chinese Food in the OSA Kitchen
By Angel Melgar Carrera and Destiney Figueroa, OSA Avocado ReportersIntrodution
Interview : Mr. Opp, Mr. Villagomez, Ms. DePaula, and Mr. Offutt
Destiny Figueroa, an 9th grader, said, “ We learned how to cook. No more mac-ncheese like what my mom said” Destiney prepared Chinese lo mein. “It was fun because I learned to experience how cook on my own.”
Angel Melgar Carrera, another OSA freshman, never had to cook in his life. His mother cooked all the meals at his house, mostly Guatemalan food consisting soups and meat dishes. He helped prepared the lo mein by chopping cabbage and carrots in spears.
Learning how to cook lo mein was a little scarry because if we messed up on the flavor, we won’t have lo mein. To be honest, I always went a small corner Chinese

restaurant. They would give me thick-noodle lo mein. I also got fried rice and Pepsi. That’s the only food I got besides the vegetables. By cooking it myself, I realized that it actually takes effort and work.”
Since cooking at OSA, I learned to appreciate my mother’s cooking and food more.
The process of cooking Chinese lo mein turned out to be an easy, welcomed cooking experience, especially doing it as a team.

What are the steps?
First, lay out all the ingredients in a sequential form. The ingredients for our OSAmade lo mein include chicken breast (1 pound), carrots (4 sticks), cabbage (1 head), garlic (3 cloves), onion, soy sauce, and eight packs of ramen noodles.
