he time has come to respect the world in all its diversity, to respect others for their differences without forgetting to respect ourselves...

With the tremendous developments of recent decades, we’ve lost sight of such a crucial part of our existence... our emotions. Living means feeling and experiencing; it means living our emotions. We so often throw ourselves headlong into the fleeting emotions offered by the acquisition of material goods whilst forgetting our real emotions, those that are experienced when we pay attention to who we really are.

The magazine that you are about to explore expresses all my emotions and their reflection on me... My shared emotion with clients that becomes the sketch of a jewel that will symbolise it, my emotion when I visit certain places, the emotion renewed over time with my partners, my emotions when I create, draw, paint and design pieces of jewelry, the emotion forged by high-quality work.

hat can I say about Andreas Gmur? An artist, a dreamer, an enthusiast... whose path I have had the pleasure of crossing. Thus began a beautiful friendship, with this man with the overflowing imagination and creativity hard-wired within his DNA, whose unique take on life never ceases to surprise me. So, it is with great pleasure that Blush Editions invites you to discover this personal piece of work that describes the human values and wonderful connection that Andreas and I share.

This edition will give you an insight into the DNA of Jag Jewelry, his know-how and his jewelry-making expertise. It will also take you to some of his favourite places around the globe, from Geneva to Bangkok via Belgium. For a few precious moments, Andreas Gmur opens up the doors to his sanctuary, giving us a glimpse of his view of the world.

— Un bijou, gardien de votre histoire

H

istorically, jewelry had a special significance. It might be the emblem of a status or function, as with the crowns worn by royalty, or of a title or distinction, like the ring that adorns the hand of the Pope. Or it could be a token of love and commitment between two people. I set out to make jewelry meaningful again, giving it back its unique power to symbolize aspects of the wearer’s life.

JAG jewels are defined by their wearers, symbolizing and representing them. I often think of my mother’s solitaire ring or my grandmother’s brooch: nothing is so powerfully evocative of someone dear to us as an item of jewelry they have worn for so long that it has come to embody them.

Together, we will instil symbolic meaning and emotional significance into your item of jewelry, constantly seeking to make it utterly unique and personal, so that it becomes part of you - an object that reflects all your different facets and encapsulates your life-story. No other jewel will express what makes you different from everyone else as this one does.

epuis la nuit des temps, le bijou revêt une symbolique particulière ; un statut ou une fonction telle la couronne de la royauté, un titre ou une distinction à l’image de l’anneau papal qui orne la main du souverain pontife ou bien encore, un gage d’amour et d’engagement entre deux êtres. Je tiens à redonner du sens au bijou, en insufflant à la création joaillière, ce qui fait sa particularité... une symbolique unique dans une vie.

Le bijou JAG se définit par la personne qui le porte et en devient ainsi, sa représentation, son incarnation. Je pense souvent au solitaire de ma mère ou à la broche de ma grand-mère ; rien ne peut mieux personnifier ces êtres chers que ces bijoux qu’ils ont tant portés, et qui ont fini par les symboliser.

Ensemble, nous rendrons au bijou toute sa symbolique et sa valeur émotionnelle; qu’il devienne une fraction de vous-même, un objet qui vous ressemble dans toutes vos subtilités, comme le gardien de votre Histoire, une quête continuelle de la personnalisation, du bijou unique, l’expression de vos différences.

Emotional Value — Retrouver la valeur émotionnelle

W

hat do you most remember from your travels?

Is there one particular moment that remains engraved in your memory? What makes it

stand out?

The answer is that, independently of the intrinsic significance of the event, thing or person that made such an impression on you, its memory is associated with an emotion - and the memory can spark the emotion again.

For me, that unforgettable image is a moment during my trip to Africa, when I suddenly came face to face with a volatile young elephant in the savanna. Seeing such a large, impressive animal at close quarters, I felt a combination of delight, astonishment and fear. If I could only remember one thing about my trip to Africa, it would be that moment and the emotion I felt at that precise instant - and feel again every time I think about the encounter.

I try to build an emotional meaning that is specific to each jewel and its wearer into each of my designs, so that instead of being just an object, the jewel encompasses the wearer’s thoughts and reminds them of significant moments in their life. A unique jewel that reflects a range of experiences and so will be especially valuable to the person it embodies.

uel est votre plus beau souvenir de voyage ? Vous souvenez-vous d’un instant en particulier, resté gravé dans votre mémoire ? Et en quoi ce moment était-il si exceptionnel ?

Il l’est tout simplement car le souvenir de cet événement, de cette chose, de cette personne qui vous a tant marquée, est associé indépendamment de sa valeur, à une émotion. Une émotion qui prend vie à nouveau, au travers de ce souvenir.

Pour ma part, je garde en tête une seule image de mon voyage en Afrique, la rencontre soudaine, dans la savane, avec ce jeune éléphant fougueux. J’étais empli de joie, de surprise mais aussi de crainte, face à cet impressionnant animal. Si je ne devais retenir qu’une chose de ce séjour en terre africaine, c’est ce moment-là et l’émotion ressentie à cet instant précis ; une émotion qui refait surface à chaque fois que je pense à cette rencontre.

Dans toutes mes créations, je m’efforce d’intégrer une charge émotionnelle propre à chaque bijou et à celle qui le portera. Plus qu’un simple objet, une pièce qui exprime l’ampleur de ses pensées et lui rappelle les moments significatifs de sa vie. Des expériences différentes qui animent un bijou unique, d’autant plus apprécié par la personne qu’il incarne.

— Le parcour d’un artiste-joaillier

A

s far back as I can remember, I have always been very creative. As a young child in my native Belgium, I loved drawing and was fascinated by the beauty of colors.

I was never happier than when I was clutching a fistful of crayons. I would spend hours filling the pages of my sketchbooks.

As I got older, my artistic aspirations receded, and I chose a path of study that was light years away from my childhood world of color. After many years working as an employee, then a consultant, for big firms and consortiums, I could no longer suppress my urge to create. I yearned to make things with my hands. My childhood passion for art reclaimed its rightful place. It turned out it had been there all along.

Now I was finally able to give free rein to my penchant for art and especially painting, my artistic renascence led me, quite naturally, towards a specific artistic genre that was closely linked with my family background. Jewelry turned out to be the branch of art that would allow me to express my creativity to the full. While traveling in places like Thailand, Sri Lanka and Africa, I had seen and fallen in love with gems. I decided to become a gemologist to learn how to bring out all the subtle nuances of these gorgeous, translucent stones, created by nature and extracted from the bowels of the earth, ready to be transformed into unique, exquisite objects in the skilled hands of a jeweler.

ussi loin que je me souvienne, depuis ma plus tendre enfance passée au sein de ma Belgique natale, j’ai toujours été un grand créatif. Passionné de dessin et des couleurs qui embellissent notre monde, je passais de longues heures, mes crayons au bout des doigts, à griffonner les pages blanches de mes carnets.

Toutefois, en grandissant, les aspirations artistiques de mon enfance laissèrent place aux études à des années-lumière de ce monde de couleurs qui était le mien.

S'en suivit une longue carrière dans le conseil auprès de grands groupes et entreprises. Puis, après de nombreuses années de salariat, cette passion enfantine s'est rebellée pour reprendre la place qu'elle n'aurait jamais dû quitter. Comme avant, j'ai ressenti une volonté de créer, de fabriquer de mes propres mains et enfin j'ai pu

laisser libre cours à ma passion pour l’art qui ne m’a finalement jamais quitté.

Il était devenu clair que je ne pouvais plus renier cette part d'héritage familial et notamment mon goût affirmé pour la peinture. Cette renaissance de mon inclination pour l'art m’amena tout naturellement vers un art singulier, à travers lequel je pourrais exprimer toute l’étendue de ma créativité, la joaillerie. En parcourant le monde, de la Thaïlande au Sri Lanka, en passant par l’Afrique, j’ai découvert ces extraordinaires cailloux translucides, extraits des entrailles de notre Terre. Des joyaux offerts par la nature, métamorphosés grâce à mes mains expertes, en un bijou unique de beauté. Par amour pour ces pierres précieuses, j’ai décidé de devenir gemmologue afin d’exprimer toutes leurs subtilités, à travers mon art.

WHEN family heritage IS TRANSMITTED AS A force, A passion — Quand l’héritage familial se transmet comme une force, une passion

F

or many people, jewelry is immediately associated with Paris. Yet although it was at the Haute École de Joaillerie in Paris that I learned about the ancestral tradition of the goldsmith’s art and acquired the techniques developed by its greatest exponents, I undoubtedly get my devotion to it from my grandfather.

As a small boy, I had the freedom of his workshops, watching him molding metals and cutting and polishing diamonds. He used to let me play with his tools and handle chunks of pure gold - though back then, I had no idea how valuable they were. I was fascinated by his skill, his respect for materials and his passion.

I absorbed his words and gestures, and they helped me find my way through life and my career path as a jeweler.

I remember the afternoons I spent with my grandfather with love and gratitude. I often think that he was the person who sparked my desire to create beautiful things. Opening my jewelry shop and studio in Geneva in 2016 was a way of honoring him and bringing his legacy back to life - and a tribute to him as a goldsmith and as a person. Although he died before I became a jeweler, I hope he would have been proud to see me carrying on the art he loved so much.

orsque nous évoquons la joaillerie, notre esprit s’envole tout naturellement vers la ville lumière. Et même si c’est à Paris, à la Haute École de Joaillerie, que le savoir-faire des plus grands et la tradition ancestrale de l’orfèvrerie m’ont été transmis, je dois sans aucun doute ma dévotion pour cet art, à mon grandpère.

Petit, je flânais déjà dans ses ateliers, l’observant travailler les métaux, tailler et polir les diamants. Il avait pris l’habitude de me laisser jouer avec ses outils, toucher l’or pur, sans même que je sache la valeur de ce que j’avais entre les mains. J’étais fasciné par son expertise, par son respect de la matière mais surtout par cette passion

qui l’animait. Je m’imprégnais de ses paroles et de ses gestes comme autant de repères qui jalonneraient ma vie et mon parcours joaillier.

De ces après-midis passés à ses côtés, je garde un souvenir ému et reconnaissant. Je pense bien souvent que mon grand-père aura été l’élément déclencheur de cette volonté de créer à mon tour. Ainsi, en ouvrant mon propre atelier-boutique genevois en 2016, j’ai tenu à lui faire honneur et à faire renaître cet héritage familial. Plus encore, j’ai souhaité rendre hommage à son travail et à l’homme qu’il était et même s’il ne m’a jamais connu comme joaillier, j’espère qu’il serait fier de me voir perpétuer cet art qu’il aimait tant.

THE LOVE OF painting AS AN expression OF jewelry creation — L’amour de la peinture comme expression de la création joaillière

J

ewelry is an art in its own right. As with painting, drawing or sculpture, it requires mastery of technique and creative endeavor to keep producing pieces that say something new. Between great master jewelers and humble servants, many people have tried their hand at it - and others have merely sought to popularize or even debase it.

As an artist, I want to see jewelry reinstated where it belongs - in the world of art. I want the creative praxis that gives rise to a jewel to jolt us out of our complacency and make us experience the same kind of frisson as when we look at a painting by a great artist, or the excitement of listening to a piece of music by a great composer. My aspiration is to make my customers feel a strong emotion when they look at the jewel they have helped create.

I see every piece of JAG jewelry as a unique artwork, and give it the same consideration. To bring the worlds of jewelry and fine art closer together, I have evolved a distinctive working practice. I develop each jewelry design via a series of sketches, before finalizing it at my easel, in my studio, in the form of a painting, using charcoal, watercolors and Indian ink.

Comme pour la peinture, le dessin ou encore la sculpture, la joaillerie requiert maîtrise et créativité au service de la création de pièces toujours plus innovantes.

Entre grands savants et humbles serviteurs, nombreux sont ceux qui souhaitent s’y frotter quand d’autres ne cherchent qu’à lui nuire ou la vulgariser.

En tant qu’artiste, je souhaite redonner à la joaillerie sa place dans le monde auquel elle appartient : celui de l’Art. Que la démarche créative à l’origine d’un bijou nous amène à nous interroger, à ressentir des émotions et à vivre des expériences particulières, comme un frémissement devant le tableau d’un maître, une palpitation en écoutant la partition d’un maestro. J’aspire à faire ressentir à mes clientes, une émotion forte face au bijou qu’elles auront créé à mes côtés.

Chaque création JAG est une pièce unique, conçue et considérée telle une œuvre d’art. Dans l’optique d’associer plus encore ces univers qui me passionnent tant, j’ai imaginé une approche créative singulière, où le bijou se construit au fil de diverses esquisses. Depuis mon atelier, sur mon chevalet, se finalise la création, avec une dernière peinture au fusain, aquarelles et encre de Chine.

THE INFLUENCE OF architecture IN MY creations — De l’influence de l’architecture dans mes créations

A

lthough my designs are strongly influenced by painting, they are inspired by art as a whole. Architecture, which is simultaneously so complex and so human, indubitably plays a crucial role in my creative process. I enjoy rediscovering the variety and freedom of architecture by looking at the monuments around us every day - the beauty of the buildings and the complexity of their construction, be they simple or highly sophisticated structures.

I defy anyone not to appreciate the quattrocento the new architectural language that emerged in Florence in the fifteenth century, combining the principles of classical architecture with the latest techniques. Brunelleschi led the way: he was hailed by his contemporaries as «the ingenious engineer» for his increasingly daring feats of design. I am thinking in particular of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, whose soaring Dome is a testimony to his genius.

JAG jewels incontrovertibly adhere to the same architectural principles: the beauty of stone goes hand in hand with the technical difficulty of assembling it and ensuring that the resulting object will be immediately comprehensible to the purchaser. My designs speak of my love of architecture as a universal art, spanning ancient and modern, European and Asian.

i mes créations sont fortement influencées par la peinture, elles n’en restent pas moins inspirées par l’art dans sa globalité. Et, sans conteste, l’architecture tient un rôle primordial dans ma démarche créative. De l’esthétisme des bâtisses à la complexité des constructions, des structures simples aux plus recherchées, je me plais à redécouvrir chaque jour, par l’observation des monuments qui nous entourent, la diversité et la liberté que nous offre l’architecture.

L’architecture, cet art si complexe et pourtant si empreint d’humanité.... Comment ne pas apprécier le quattrocento, ce nouveau langage architectural florentin, mêlant les fondamentaux du classicisme aux dernières

prouesses techniques. Une période artistique conduite par Brunelleschi, célébré par ses contemporains comme « l’ingénieux ingénieur », pour ses créations toujours plus audacieuses. Je pense notamment au dôme de la Cathédrale Santa Maria del Fiore, lequel de toute sa hauteur, affiche l’habileté de l’artiste.

Les bijoux JAG respectent indéniablement les mêmes principes architecturaux ; l’esthétisme de la pierre s’allie à la difficulté technique de son montage tout en assurant à son acquéreur, une lecture claire de l’objet final.

Mes créations relatent ainsi mon amour pour l’architecture, tant antique que contemporaine, aussi bien européenne qu’asiatique, tel un art universel.

s our creative process progresses and we find the words to capture your personality, your unique piece will start to take shape, which I will illustrate through a series of sketches.

Once the final sketch has been completed and approved, we will set this joint creation in the centre of a beautiful canvas as an easel painting at my Geneva studio.

That is how your jewel with come to life, in the form of a delicate work that combines watercolours, charcoal and India ink. More than a simple painting, I want to offer you a personalised portrayal, symbolic of this unique creative experience.

However, this artistic quest often doesn’t end there.

If the piece allows, I am sometimes able to guide my clients through each and every step of the artisanal production process right up to the final polish.

You will be able to see for yourself how this unique object comes into existence, an experience that will make it even more valuable in your eyes. Finally, the day will come when your jewel leaves the studio to meet the person whose dreams were the inspiration behind it. It’s at that precise moment that you will start to appreciate the essence of a uniquely creative keepsake, when it will take on its sentimental value and the symbolic meaning with which you have imbued it.

Bien souvent, cette quête artistique ne s’arrête pas là. Si la pièce de joaillerie le permet, il m’arrive d’entraîner mes clientes, en un mouvement fluide, égrenant ensemble chacune des étapes de la fabrication artisanale jusqu’au polissage final.

C’est ainsi que vous pourrez découvrir cet objet unique tout au long des différentes phases de sa réalisation, lui conférant ainsi une plus grande valeur encore à vos yeux. Enfin, viendra le jour où le bijou quittera l’atelier pour rejoindre la personne dont les rêves lui ont donné naissance. I

n 2013, I left Paris and headed towards Lac Leman in search of a place worthy of my values and vision of High Jewelry; and naturally, it was in Geneva that I finally set down my bags. In Calvin’s city I found a place steeped in history that exuded an atmosphere of peace ideal for contemplation. I wanted to welcome each visitor like a friend, in intimate surroundings far from the madding crowd and hoards of rampaging shoppers. A place that would encourage us to dream and create a jewel together, sitting around the table, in a close relationship of trust and equality. I had this vision of a workshop that would be a source of inspiration and sharing, where lovers of craftsmanship, tradition and elegance, as well as those drawn by mere curiosity, would always be welcome. A place that would allow each individual to propel their imagination towards new horizons while enhancing their own self-awareness. Tucked into a corner of the Old Town opposite Saint Peter’s Cathedral, I found the ideal spot to fulfil my creative desires.

n 2013, je quittai Paris en direction du Lac Léman, à la recherche d’un lieu en adéquation avec mes valeurs et ma vision de la haute joaillerie ; c’est tout naturellement à Genève que je décidai de poser mes valises. J’ai trouvé en la Cité de Calvin, un endroit chargé d’histoire, de calme et de recueillement. Je souhaitais accueillir chaleureusement chaque visiteur comme un ami, dans un espace convivial, loin du tumulte de la ville et de la frénésie commerciale. Un lieu qui nous permettrait de rêver et de créer ensemble un bijou, autour d’une table, dans un rapport de confiance et d’égalité. J’avais en tête cette image d’un atelier, source d’inspirations et d’échanges, où les amoureux de l’artisanat, des traditions et de l’élégance tout comme les simples curieux, seraient toujours les bienvenus. Un lieu qui permettrait à tout un chacun de déployer son imagination vers de nouveaux horizons, tout en apprenant à se connaître soi-même. C’est niché dans la Vieille Ville, face à la Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, que j’ai trouvé l’emplacement idéal, propice à la création selon mes souhaits.

Jewelry AS consumer goods — Le bijou comme objet de consommation

S

ince we entered the new millennium, globalization and revolutionary industrial techniques have eroded jewelry’s traditional importance. Jewels have been transformed from unique items into consumer goods. Despite all the marketing claims of hand-crafting, jewelry has become a standardized product, churned out by machine tools.

Over time, jewelry has lost what made it unique: its past, its story, its soul. Nowadays, many people see it as a marker of status - a sign of belonging to a particular social group - sometimes to the extent that it dispossesses the wearer of their distinct individual identity. It ends up becoming a mere accessory - useless, unnecessary and meaningless.

Through my designs, I endeavor to restore jewelry’s image by giving each jewel a soul - capturing its essential quality, a symbolic value that makes it meaningful, so that, as in times past, the wearer forms an emotional bond with this one object that they have with no other jewel.

epuis le début de notre millénaire, l’ouverture sur le monde et les révolutions industrielles ont transformé la joaillerie traditionnelle, faisant perdre au bijou, son aura symbolique.

Autrefois création singulière, le bijou est rapidement devenu l’apanage des sociétés de consommation. Promu par le marketing comme un produit artisanal, il est standardisé et désormais fabriqué en abondance par des machines-outils.

Avec le temps, le bijou a ainsi perdu ce qui faisait sa particularité : son vécu, son histoire, son âme. Aujourd’hui, il est pour beaucoup le reflet d’un statut, garantissant l’appartenance à un groupe socioculturel. Plus encore, un objet si commun, qu’il en dépossède son porteur de son individualité, de son unicité. C’est ainsi que le bijou est devenu un simple accessoire ; un objet futile, superflu et sans signification, pour la grande majorité.

Par mes créations, je m’applique à redorer l’image de la joaillerie en contribuant à rendre au bijou, son âme. Réincorporer ce qui en fait l’essence même, cette valeur symbolique qui lui donne du sens. Que celle qui le porte puisse ressentir une émotion particulière et qu’elle tisse à nouveau un lien fort avec cet objet unique, une sensation qu’aucun autre bijou ne pourra lui procurer.

Le premier contact établi, je suis allée à la rencontre d’Andreas Gmur dans son atelier de la Cour de SaintPierre, à Genève. Un endroit à la hauteur de l’événement ! «Luxe, calme et volupté» semble avoir été écrit pour son atelier. Une conversation détendue, presque amicale, s’est immédiatement instaurée. Au fil des phrases et des silences, j’ai pu dévoiler mon envie de célébrer ma

Andreas Gmur knew how to guide my thoughts and lay out the markers needed for his creative reflection.

I watched him draw this magnificent ring set with a beautiful blue sapphire, a symbol of this new union with myself, reflecting my own revolution, with contours that seem to show me the path for tomorrow.

Mme Heliodora DIERCKX I have often remarked that women don’t treat themselves to jewelry as folklore, real-life fairytales, teaches us that a jewel is a symbol of love from a man. And so, one day, I decided to love myself and to prove it right away, in an almost selfish way, as a sort of obliging self-satisfaction.

This being proof of love, I needed THE gift, the ultimate expression of love... a ring!

And as the love that we give ourselves is immeasurable, I needed to find the Artist that was capable of matching my ideas. I wandered through the luxury aisles and the larger retail stores and then I settled on an idea. I wanted a happy medium, a per-

son to listen to me and a philosophy that matched my desires. Eventually, almost at the point of despair, I found JAG Jewelry...

The studio, belonging to the Artist Andreas Gmur, was pleasant, elegant and welcoming all at the same time. It perfectly fit that wild idea of mine. We spoke (a lot), considered things (in great detail) and we found a starting point. A word became a sketch, a moment’s silence a detail, Andreas Gmur understood me, better than I could have ever expected from someone who didn’t yet know me. He then drew a quite beautiful ring, simple yet powerful, a pure symbol of love... At last I had found my expression of joy.

J’ai souvent remarqué que les femmes ne s’offrent pas de bijoux tant les contes populaires, véritables mythes, nous apprennent que le bijou est le symbole de l’amour d’un homme. Alors, un jour, j’ai décidé de m’aimer et de me le prouver sans attendre, de façon presque égoïste, dans une forme d’autosatisfaction complaisante.

Puisqu’il s’agissait d’une preuve d’amour, il me fallait LE cadeau, l’ultime recours de l’amoureux... une bague !

Et comme l’amour que l’on se porte à soi-même est incommensurable, je devais trouver l’Artiste à la hauteur de ma démarche. J’ai erré dans les méandres du luxe, les affres de la grande consommation et j’ai transigé. Je voulais un juste milieu, une personne à l’écoute et dont

la philosophie collerait à mon souhait. D’errance en désespérance, je suis arrivée chez JAG Jewelry...

L’atelier de l’Artiste, Andreas Gmur, est agréable, élégant et convivial à la fois. En cela, il répondait parfaitement à cette folle idée qui était la mienne. Nous avons parlé (beaucoup), réfléchi (énormément) et nous avons trouvé notre point de départ. Un mot entraînant une esquisse, un silence ajoutant un détail, Andreas Gmur m’a comprise, mieux que je n’aurais pu l’espérer de quelqu’un qui ne me connaît pas. Puis, il a dessiné une très jolie bague, simple et puissante, pur symbole de l’amour... J’avais enfin trouvé mon emblème du bonheur.

ature is perfect in its imperfection. We often seek stones that have no inclusions, but this visual perfection may actually be the hallmark of a synthetic stone. Inclusions are all the deformities naturally present in a stone, such as small fractures, veils and bubbles. Personally speaking, I prefer little inclusions that are the source of a gemstone’s charm, like a garden in an emerald, a butterfly wing in a sapphire, silk in a ruby or a feather in a diamond. These inclusions don’t spoil the colour or brilliance of a gem; on the contrary, they guarantee the stone’s authenticity, as only Mother Nature has the power to incorporate another natural feature into a jewel without destroying the beauty and value we perceive in it. These deformities are millions of years old, appearing during the formation of the

stones amid the turmoil of magma and bedrock.

Once the stone’s authenticity is confirmed by its structure, other criteria may be taken into account such as colour, which is one of the most important clues. Natural gemstones have thousands of tone varieties and change their appearance depending on the light. Colour hues often enhance a jewel’s attractiveness.

The cut fashioned at the hands of the gemcutter also has an influence on the price. The facets must be regular, balanced and perfectly polished in order to enhance the gem’s lustre.

That said, so-called defects of inclusion or colour are for me a true gauge of the quality that makes the gem a unique specimen. Inclusions have great value in the eyes of gemologists, as they prove the natural origin of the

stone. Far from being defects, inclusions can give gems a unique character and specific traits that are absent from synthetic creations designed to look perfect. For me as a jeweller, imperfection is the hallmark of a stone’s beauty and value. These atypical features tell the story of the gem and reveal its evolution throughout the ages on earth and beneath the ocean.

Buying a stone is a privileged experience that establishes a unique bond between you and the stone. A gem should be meaningful in your eyes and, in a certain way, should resemble you. For these reasons, whatever type of stone you’re after, I advise you to buy it only from a recognised dealer. This expert will be able to guide you and provide a guarantee of the stone’s authenticity and responsible extraction, amid surroundings that foster trust and peace of mind.

a nature est parfaite dans son imperfection. Nous recherchons souvent des pierres sans aucune inclusion alors même que cette perfection visuelle peut cacher une pierre synthétique. Les inclusions sont l’ensemble des difformités naturellement présentes dans

la pierre comme une petite fissure, un voile ou bien encore une cavité. Pour ma part, je privilégie les petites inclusions qui font le charme de la pierre comme un jardin dans une émeraude, une aile de papillon dans un saphir, de la soie dans un rubis ou une plume dans un diamant.

Ces inclusions ne gâchent ni la couleur, ni la brillance de la pierre ; mieux encore, elles sont la garantie de l’authenticité de la pierre car seule la nature a le pouvoir d’inclure un autre élément naturel dans un joyau, sans en abîmer la beauté et la valeur que nous lui accordons.

Ces déformations datent de plusieurs millénaires et sont apparues durant la formation des gemmes au sein des magmas et des roches-mères.

Une fois l’authenticité de la pierre validée par sa structure, d’autres critères doivent être pris en considération comme la couleur qui reste l’un des indices les plus importants. La tonalité des pierres naturelles se décline de mille et une façons et change d’apparence selon la lumière. Les nuances de couleurs ajoutent souvent du charme au bijou.

La taille de la pierre réalisée par le lapidaire, influe également sur son prix. Ses facettes doivent être régulières, équilibrées et parfaitement polies afin de donner à la gemme son plus bel éclat.

Toutefois, ces soi-disant défauts d’inclusion ou de couleur représentent, selon moi, un réel gage de qualité faisant de la gemme, votre joyau unique. Les inclusions ont une grande valeur aux yeux des gemmologues car elles prouvent la naturalité de la pierre et lui confèrent bien souvent une personnalité unique et des caractéristiques spécifiques contrairement aux créations synthétiques qui tendent vers la perfection. En tant que joaillier, je considère l’imperfection des pierres comme le témoignage de leur beauté et de leur valeur. Ces détails atypiques racontent l’histoire de la gemme et son évolution au cours du temps, sur terre et dans les océans.

Tanzanite, MY magic STONE La Tanzanite, ma pierre magique

D

iscovered in 1967 by the Massai, a tribe of nomadic warriors living in East Africa, tanzanite is a variety of zoisite, a mineral of rather special composition. There is to date only one known operating mine where this mineral is extracted.

The mine occupies an area of only 8 square miles at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Arusha region of Tanzania, the country that gave its name to the precious stone.

This gem is one of my favourites due to its remarkable colour properties. Renowned for its unusual crystal structure, tanzanite is noted for its strong trichroism, a light effect where three different rays of colour are emitted when a beam of light passes through the gem.

The crystal appears alternately sapphire blue, purple, violet and burgundy depending on its orientation, an effect as dazzling as it is exotic which makes tanzanite, in my own humble opinion, even more beautiful than blue sapphire. Its colorimetric diversity and geologic rarity make it a highly sought-after stone that is a delight to rediscover each time I gaze upon its facets.

écouverte en 1967 par les Massaïs, une population de guerriers nomades de l’Afrique de l’Est, la tanzanite est une zoïsite, pierre à la composition bien particulière. Il n’existe aujourd’hui qu’une seule mine connue et exploitée, permettant d’extraire cette gemme.

Une petite surface d’une vingtaine de km2, située aux pieds du Mont Kilimandjaro, dans la région d’Arusha en Tanzanie, d’où le nom de tanzanite.

Ce minéral, dont la propriété chromatique est remarquable, est l’une de mes pierres préférées. Reconnue pour sa structure cristalline, la tanzanite possède un fort trichroïsme : un phénomène lumineux qui émet trois rayons colorés distincts, lorsqu’un faisceau de lumière traverse la pierre. Selon son orientation, elle prend alors des éclats de couleur bleu saphir, mauve, violet ou encore rouge bourgogne. Un résultat aussi clair que somptueux, qui rend la tanzanite, à mon humble avis, encore plus belle qu’un saphir bleu. Sa diversité colorimétrique et sa rareté géologique font d’elle une pierre très demandée, que je me plais à redécouvrir à chaque regard porté sur ses facettes.

MY leitmotif : MINIMIZING THE

ecological impact — Minimiser l’impact écologique comme leitmotiv

W

hether a high-end jewel or a simple item of costume jewelry, the jewelry design process would not be possible without a certain ecological impact. Saying otherwise would be a lie.

Although the stones must necessarily come from deep with our Earth, the key difference lies in the way in which they are extracted. It is for that reason that I am committed to getting to know my suppliers on a personal basis, in order to learn about their methods and ethics.

I only work with suppliers that can guarantee the source of their stones as well as respect for social principles, working conditions and the natural environment. None of the gems used in my studio are ‘bloodstones’ or derived from human exploitation. I believe strongly in the universal energies that flow through these stones and I could not imagine such a beautiful item transmitting negative energy. With this in mind, my suppliers are subject to frequent checks, based on the Responsible Jewelry Council or Kimberley processes.

Our gold and platinum come exclusively from recycled jewels. Their smelting and refining is carried out in Switzerland by a German-Swiss company. Under the strictest of conditions, this Öcogold-certified processing enables the full recovery of heavy metals and fume filtration.

Finally, the last step of this creative journey takes place in my studio with all the essential precautions needed to protect the surrounding environment and our health, through a process of sorting, filtering and recycling used materials. This commitment is also strengthened by the

local artisanal production and creative process.

Seeking to minimise my ecological impact has become part of my daily work, a way of life and a professional goal that fits seamlessly with my desire to imbue my creations with an emotional value that is unique to each one. It would not be possible to perceive and appreciate this emotion if it weren’t generated with respect for the natural environment.

u’il s’agisse d’une pièce de haute joaillerie ou d’un simple bijou fantaisie, la création joaillière ne saurait exister sans un certain impact écologique. Dire le contraire ne serait que mentir.

Si les pierres proviennent nécessairement des entrailles de notre Terre, toute la différence réside dans la manière de les extraire des sols. C’est pourquoi je m’attache à connaître personnellement ceux qui me fournissent les gemmes afin de prendre connaissance de leur parcours et de leur respect de l’éthique.

Je veille à m’associer à des fournisseurs me garantissant la provenance de leurs pierres et le respect des principes sociaux, des conditions de travail et de la nature. Aucune des gemmes utilisées dans mon atelier ne sont des pierres de sang ou ne proviennent d’une exploita-

tion humaine. Je crois fortement en la transmission des énergies universelles au travers de ces dernières et je ne peux imaginer qu’un si beau joyau ne devienne un simple transmetteur d’ondes négatives. Dans cette optique, des contrôles fréquents sont effectués auprès de mes fournisseurs, s’appuyant sur les processus de Kimberley ou du Responsible Jewelry Council.

Quant à nos ors et platine, ils résultent exclusivement du recyclage d’anciens bijoux. Leur affinage et leur fonte se déroulent en territoire helvétique, au sein d’une entreprise germano-suisse. Dans des conditions draconiennes, ce traitement, certifié Öcogold, permet la récupération totale des métaux lourds ainsi que le filtrage des fumées.

Enfin, la dernière étape de ce parcours de création s’effectue dans mon atelier avec toutes les précautions indispen-

sables au respect de l’environnement proche et de notre santé, au travers du tri, du filtrage et du recyclage des matériaux utilisés. La création, la fabrication artisanale et locale renforcent également cet engagement.

Chercher à minimiser mon impact écologique est devenu un leitmotiv quotidien, un mode de vie et un objectif professionnel en parfaite adéquation avec ma volonté de placer au sein de mes créations, une valeur émotionnelle, propre à chacun. Une émotion que l’on ne pourrait saisir et goûter si elle n’était pas mise en exergue dans le respect de la nature.

AN ALL-CONSUMING PASSION After studying psychology in Geneva and Paris and following a succession of uninspiring training courses, Johann Sauty faced up to the truth and realised that his place did not belong in this world of bureaucracy. A fervent admirer of the arts from the outset, the young man set off in search of new creative experiences. It was actually a friend who introduced Johann to the art of photography in his analogue development studio. He quickly acquired a passion for the discipline and completed a succession of training courses, specialising in portraits. The budding professio-

While the Umami restaurant offers exquisite delicacies representing the best of Japanese cuisine, the Arabesque offers authentic Lebanese dishes and the Bayview, headed by French master chef Michel Roth, lives up to the challenge of its one-star Michelin Guide rating. I have always thought of cuisine as an act of creation unto itself, an art that arouses euphoria and joy just like a jewel.

PRINCESS CAROLINE MURAT, A RENOWNED ARTIST AND ARISTOCRAT Founded in 2006 by Princess Caroline Murat, this musical occasion was just begging to be created in her opinion.

Also known under the name of Caroline Haffner, the budding pianist whose talent was revealed when she was only 9 years old studied at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique, which had never before admitted such a young pupil. Her youthful virtuosity earned her a series of prestigious prizes during the 1970s, including the Marguerite Long competition and the Geneva International Music Competition. Not content with resting on her laurels, however, Caroline Murat decided to diversify by passing on her talents to younger generations, working as a teacher in a number of prestigious universities including Harvard. I wholeheartedly share her passion for classical music, that rigorous art form whose subtle lightness I can enjoy at the hands of one of my daughters, a young and promising talent.

MUSIC, THE LANGUAGE OF THE EMOTIONS Having contributed to the foundation of the Verbier Festival Piano Academy and the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad festival, Caroline Murat is now artistic director of the Gstaad New Year Music Festival, through which she seeks to promote upcoming young artists. According to Princess Murat, music is also transmitted through the shared pleasure of talent and listening. The pleasure I feel, just like a performer launching into the first notes of a work, brings us together, in the precision required to bestow beauty on the notes which seem, notwithstanding, to fly out of their own accord, in the precise expression of the composer’s emotions, and in the life encapsulated in these scores, which would be but useless scraps of paper without the performer who transforms and sometimes transgresses them, all in the cause of beauty.

VIVE LA DIFFERENCE! (AS LONG AS IT’S BEAUTIFUL) Every year, Caroline Murat selects works and musicians that surprise her, using her intuition to concoct a pro-

gramme composed entirely of talented and exceptional musicians of varied origins spanning a broad spectrum of musical genres.

CAROLINE MURAT, UNE PRINCESSE ET UNE ARTISTE DE RENOM Créé en 2006 par Caroline Murat, cet événement musical lui est apparu comme une évidence. Connue également sous le nom de Caroline Haffner, la très jeune pianiste dont le talent s’est affiché à seulement 9 ans a intégré le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, institution qui jusque-là n’avait jamais accepté d’élève aussi jeune. Je partage indéniablement son amour pour la musique classique, art rigoureux s’il en est, dont je peux respirer la légèreté subtile auprès de l’une de mes filles, encore très jeune musicienne de talent en devenir.

LA MUSIQUE, LE LANGAGE DES ÉMOTIONS Caroline Murat, après avoir jadis participé à la création de la Piano Academy du Festival de Verbier et aux Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad, se consacre aujourd’hui au Gstaad New Year Music Festival, afin de promouvoir des talents prometteurs. Selon la Princesse Murat, la transmission de la musique se fait également par le plaisir partagé du talent et de l’écoute. Ce plaisir que je ressens, au même titre que ces artistes osant les premières notes d’une œuvre, rapproche nos expériences… dans la précision nécessaire à la beauté des notes qui pour-

Meandering through the narrow streets of the old city centre surrounded by ancient moats and brick ramparts, holidaymakers can visit the Buddhist temples that are the pride and joy of this region. A familiar sensation of peace and calm washes over me whenever I wander around Chiang Mai, getting lost in these havens of meditation where time seems to stand still.

Man, dates from the end of the 13th century and is easily recognisable by the 15 elephant sculptures guarding the base of its stone chedi. Only a stone’s throw away in a garden full of trees is the Wat Phra Singh or Gold Temple, famous for its frescos and Lion Buddha statue. Not only bastions of peace, these temples take us on a journey of initiation.

But I also love Chiang Mai for its expertise and passion for beautiful artefacts, which inspire us and bring us together. Fuelled by a long history, a strategic location on the Silk Road, ethnic diversity and a key role in the local economy, Chiang Mai’s craft industry has rapidly grown

up and spread its wings. Today, the city is still one of Thailand’s most famous craft centres, particularly renowned for its parasols, wooden sculptures and jewelry. Albeit less well known than Chanthaburi or Bangkok, Chiang Mai is famous for its legendary stones such as sapphire and ruby extracted from the most beautiful mines in the region just over the border. This way, the city perpetuates the legend, allowing aficionados to set out in search of the most authentic stones in the most intimate of settings.

I cannot possible leave Chiang Mai without visiting one of its local markets with its colourful stalls - they’re not far from the cottages used as workshops by local craftsmen and women. For 15 years now I’ve been visiting an old stonecutter with whom I’ve struck up a close and trusting relationship. Every time without fail, he rummages in his drawers behind the counter and picks out his most beautiful sapphires, which he has kept to show me. Each deal concluded with this old friend ends with a hearty meal where we taste Chiang Mai’s traditional dish, khao soi, at a neighbouring market. I cherish the precious memories of these men whose dexterity and attention to detail never cease to amaze me. Passionate proponents of their art, they fashion true masterpieces at the tips of their nimble fingers. I think in particular of the jewellers and stonecutters who are an invaluable asset to Chiang Mai, as Thailand is one of the world’s foremost exporters of precious stones. These artists have harnessed their experience in service of the country’s jewelry industry and have raised it to the top while preserving and, above all, encouraging ancestral local practices such as traditional hammered silver.

Much more than just a tourist destination, Chiang Mai is the standard-bearer for a flourishing culture of many facets.

ressée au pied du Triangle d’Or, Chiang Mai peut s’enorgueillir d’une culture forte où les traditions se mêlent à la modernité. Considérée depuis peu comme une Ville créative par l’UNESCO, la cité n’a pourtant pas oublié son histoire. Les étroites ruelles qui serpentent au cœur de la vieille ville protégée par ses anciennes douves et murailles de briques emmènent ses visiteurs vers les temples bouddhistes, joyaux de cette contrée. Flâner dans Chiang Mai et me perdre en ces lieux de méditation où le temps semble s’être arrêté, me procure toujours le même plaisir de sérénité retrouvée. Le Wat Chiang Man, le plus ancien de ces oasis de contemplation, est un édifice de la fin du XIIIe siècle, aisément reconnaissable à ses quinze éléphants sculptés à la base de son chedi de pierre. À quelques pas de là, dans un jardin arboré, se dresse le Wat Phra Singh, admiré pour ses fresques et sa statue de Bouddha-Lion.

Plus encore que du recueillement, ces temples nous offrent un véritable voyage initiatique.

Si j’aime autant Chiang Mai, c’est également pour son savoir-faire et sa passion pour les beaux objets, laquelle nous anime et nous réunit. De par sa longue histoire, sa situation géographique stratégique sur la Route de la Soie, mais aussi grâce à sa mixité ethnique et son rôle dans l’économie locale, Chiang Mai a rapidement vu fleurir et se diversifier son industrie artisanale. Aujourd’hui encore, la ville reste l’un des centres artisanaux les plus renommés du pays, particulièrement pour sa production d’ombrelles, de sculptures sur bois et de bijoux. Bien que moins connue que Chanthaburi ou Bangkok, cette cité livre ses pierres légendaires, comme le saphir et le rubis, extraites des plus belles mines de la

région juste de l’autre côté de la frontière. Ainsi, Chiang Mai entretient la légende et permet aux experts d’officier dans un cadre intimiste à la recherche de pierres plus authentiques.

Je ne peux passer à Chiang Mai sans visiter l’un de ses marchés locaux aux étals colorés, situés non loin des cottages servant d’ateliers aux artisans. Depuis une quinzaine d’années, j’ai pris l’habitude de retrouver un vieux lapidaire avec lequel s’est tissée une relation de confiance et de respect mutuel. Il ne manque jamais de sortir de leur cachette derrière son comptoir, ses plus beaux saphirs conservés à mon attention. Une affaire conclue avec ce vieux compagnon se concrétise immanquablement dans la bonne humeur et devant un Khao Soi, le plat typique de Chiang Mai, dégusté sur un mar-

ché voisin. Je conserve précieusement le souvenir de ces hommes dont la dextérité et la minutie n’ont cessé de m’impressionner. Passionnés par leur art, ils conçoivent du bout de leurs doigts agiles, de véritables chefsd’œuvre. Je pense notamment aux joailliers et aux tailleurs de pierre qui sont d’une importance fondamentale pour Chiang Mai, la Thaïlande étant l’un des premiers exportateurs de gemmes au monde. Ces artistes ont mis leur expérience au service de la joaillerie thaïlandaise et l’ont hissée au sommet tout en conservant et surtout en encourageant, les pratiques locales ancestrales comme le traditionnel argent martelé.

Au-delà d’une simple cité touristique, Chiang Mai est donc assurément l’étendard d’une culture florissante aux multiples facettes.

One of Brussels’ few star-rated restaurants located in a magnificent 17th century residence in the city’s historical Sablons district. L’Ecailler du Palais Royal welcomes all lovers of good food ranging from prestigious guests, including the Belgian royal family, to itinerant Epicureans in search of new gastronomic experiences. Personally speaking, I can’t visit Brussels without booking a table at this illustrious dining establishment, the epicentre of traditional Belgian cuisine where choice ingredients are transformed into culinary wonders with skills rivalled only by the world’s most prized chefs. The pleasure begins with reading the menu, a veritable palette of sumptuous dishes including a wide choice of seafood guaranteed to deliver a feast worthy of a king.

I cannot recommend this place strongly enough to all of you seeking a unique experience that will leave you with an indelible memory of Belgian cuisine!

Smack bang pop in the centre of Brussels you will find the famous Comics Art Museum, a testimony to the Belgians’ love of the Ninth Art. Located in a magnificent Art Nouveau building dreamed up by architect Victor Horta, the museum houses over 6,000 original works organised into permanent and temporary collections that change with the seasons. Alongside classic stalwarts such as Tintin, the Smurfs and my personal favourite, Gomer Goof, you can also make some interesting discoveries from more recent comic strips. I never tire of wandering from room to room in the hope of unlocking the arcane secrets of another work - which is what makes this place such an ideal monument in honour of creativity. The museum is a must for all comic strip fans embarking on a weekend excursion to the Belgian capital.

À chacun de mes passages à Bruxelles, sans exception, je vais dîner dans cet établissement, chef-lieu de la cuisine traditionnelle, où les beaux produits sont sublimés par un savoir-faire qui n’a d’égal que celui des grands chefs. Le plaisir commence à la lecture du menu proposant des mets de premier choix, des spécialités de la mer entre autres, pour un repas digne des plus grandes tables étoilées. Je ne peux que vous recommander de vivre cette expérience culinaire unique qui vous laissera, sans aucun doute, un souvenir mémorable de la gastronomie belge.

En plein cœur de Bruxelles se trouve le célèbre temple de la Bande Dessinée, témoignage de l’amour passionné des Belges pour le 9e Art. Lové dans un merveilleux édifice de style Art Nouveau, imaginé par l’architecte Victor Horta, le musée y expose plus de 6 000 œuvres originales et propose des collections permanentes et temporaires, au gré des saisons. PASSAGE DU ROI ET DE LA REINE For me, no trip to Brussels is complete without the compulsory - and compulsive - shopping spree in the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries.

Believed to be the oldest covered galleries in Europe, the Galleries consist of three shopping arcades including the King’s Gallery (Koningsgalerij) and the Queen’s Gallery (Koninginnegalerij) which are, in my humble opinion, simply the most beautiful streets in Brussels.

Inaugurated in 1847 by King Leopold 1, the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries are more than just a place to go shopping: they are a place for meeting people and having fun, and are now ranked among the city’s prime attractions. The arcades feature traditional shops, Belgian restaurants and craft boutiques, not to mention a theatre and a cinema.

The Galleries attract some 6 million visitors a year and you will not fail to join them in their admiration.

En visite à Bruxelles, je ne manque jamais de me promener entre les échoppes des Galeries Royales St-Hubert. Considérées comme les plus anciennes galeries couvertes d’Europe, elles regroupent trois rues commerçantes dont les Passages du Roi et de la Reine, qui sont à mon humble avis, les plus belles allées de la ville. Inaugurées en 1847, par le Roi Léopold 1er, les Galeries Royales St-Hubert sont un lieu de shopping certes, mais également de rencontre et de divertissement ; elles sont reconnues aujourd’hui comme l’une des meilleures attractions de la ville. On y trouve au programme, commerces de tradition, restaurants belges et boutiques artisanales ainsi qu’un théâtre et un cinéma. As an ardent fan of Thai cuisine, I can never resist the gourmet menu, a never-failing opportunity to titillate the taste buds with a new and astonishing array of succulent flavours. In a region steeped in history lies the little town of Ayutthaya, a place that exudes culture and civilisation from its very pores. The ancient capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya has become a prized destination for travellers drawn, among other things, by the multitude of Buddhist temples in the vicinity. Grouped in a historical park included on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, these places of worship bestow peace and calm on an exotic landscape filled with ruins and vegetation that bear witness to the ancestral history of Ayutthaya, once considered to be one of the greatest cities in the world. Lost in meditation, I also get lost easily in the winding alleys of Wat Phra Mahathat, one of the city’s oldest religious buildings, a haven of peace offering countless opportunities for discovery, a leap into the past amidst exquisite natural surroundings.

La Thaïlande regorge de splendeurs en tous genres, mais la cuisine locale reste l’une des merveilles du Royaume de Siam. De passage à Bangkok s’impose une visite du Blue Elephant, un restaurant traditionnel situé au cœur de Sathon, dans une splendide demeure de style colonial, d’ailleurs classée par le département des Beaux-Arts de la Thaïlande. Sous la gouverne de la cheffe Nooror Somany Steppe, l’établissement est une institution de la scène culinaire bangkokienne, proposant une carte délicieusement diversifiée, regorgeant de trésors, des mets colorés et délicats. En grand amateur de cuisine thaïlandaise, je ne peux m’empêcher de toujours commander le menu dégustation afin d’avoir le plaisir, chaque fois renouvelé, de goûter à de toujours plus étonnantes saveurs originales. Au-delà d’un périple au bout du monde, The Blue Elephant est la garantie d’une véritable odyssée culinaire.

Dans une province chargée d’histoire se dresse la petite ville d’Ayutthaya, lieu empreint de culture et de civilisation. L’ancienne capitale du Royaume d’Ayutthaya est devenue une destination prisée par les touristes attirés, entre autres, par la présence de nombreux temples bouddhistes. Réunis dans un parc historique inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, ces lieux de culte révèlent un paysage somptueux mêlant ruines et verdures, témoignant de l’histoire ancestrale d’Ayutthaya, autrefois, considérée comme l’une des plus grandes cités du monde. Au gré de mes méditations, je me perds facilement dans les ruelles dépaysantes du Wat Phra Mahathat, l’un des plus anciens édifices religieux de la ville, un espace de recueillement et de découvertes locales, offrant le dépaysement extraordinaire d’un saut dans le passé, ancré dans la nature.
