Television PICK OF THE DAY Sabrina (Nova Classics, 21.00) Regular readers will wonder if we’ve gone irredeemably retro: yesterday’s Pick of the Day was The Trouble With Harry, made in 1955 - and now here’s Sabrina, made a year earlier. We’ll come back to the present soon - but Sabrina stars Audrey Hepburn, and the sad truth is there’s no-one around at the moment who’s anything like Audrey Hepburn. You could say Keira Knightley or Natalie Portman, and they certainly have a similar look (that slim, gamine-ish, ineffably graceful look) but something’s missing, and it may be gone for good - because being an actress is now a viable career option, which gives every actress a kind of subconscious self-confidence. Not that Ms. Hepburn was timid or mousy, quite the reverse, but you sense that she always viewed being an actress with a kind of amusement. She was, after all, an aristocrat, born in Brussels to a Dutch baroness and a rich English banker - and it’s no surprise that she moved beyond acting in the last few decades of her life, becoming a special ambassador for UNICEF. Audrey’s innate nobility - her poise, and above all her reserve, which is foreign to the Knightleys and Portmans - is ironic in a way, because Sabrina is a rom-com about class difference, with our heroine on the wrong side of the class divide. “What right does a chauffeur have to call his daughter Sab-

rina?” asks old Mr. Larrabee huffily (“What would you suggest? ‘Ethel’?” replies his son) - and Sabrina is indeed the chauffeur’s daughter, “a small girl on a large estate”, gazing wistfully at the lavish parties where her rich employers entertain other rich people. She’s in love with David (William Holden, with his hair dyed blond), the rich family’s younger son, but he doesn’t even know she exists - at least till she goes to Paris, gets a makeover and comes back (even more) irresistible. Alas, that’s where the film’s problems start - because David is now in love with Sabrina, but he’s also engaged to be married so his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) starts courting her as a form of damage limitation. I revere Bogart, but he’s all wrong for this role - not just too old, but too cynical and tired-looking. You don’t root for these two people to end up together; he seems bad (as in dangerously bad) for her, the relationship clouded by the lurking fear that he might poison her magical purity. She does have a magical purity, though: Hepburn was never more luminous (no, not even in Roman Holiday) and the film is a near-classic, hamstrung only by its failure to find worthy swains for its beautiful heroine. That the 90s remake starred Julia Ormond is beyond hilarious. Made in 1954.

Lethal Weapon 3 (LTV, 21.00) “We’re back, we’re bad. You’re black, I’m mad!” said Mel Gibson, unforgettably, in Lethal Weapon 2, leaving him with nothing to say when he and Danny Glover returned once again as Riggs and Murtaugh (the tag-line was equally uninspired: “The magic is back again!”) but in fact the threequel was better than the sequel, a slick action comedy with spectacular explosions (the city of Orlando actually allowed the ﬁ lmmakers to blow up their old City Hall, having meanwhile built a new one; ah, the days before CGI), sassy dialogue and the usual negligible plot, in this case involving a bad cop turned arms merchant. Murtaugh once again points out that he’s getting too old for this shit, Rene Russo adds love interest and fast-talking Joe Pesci is Leo Getz, furious at having been given a rectal exam “with a telescope big enough to see Venus”. “I guess all they saw was Uranus, huh?” quips Mel. Zing! Made in 1992.

Julia’s Eyes (Novacinema1, 22.00) Kudos to Spain: not only do they have the world’s best restaurant (though El Bulli’s closed down now) and the world’s best football team, they also lay claim to making (some of) the world’s best horror fi lms, specialising in creepy chillers like The Orphanage - and this one has the same lead actress, Belen Rueda, playing both Julia (our heroine) and her twin sister. Both sisters suffer from a degenerative sight disease (i.e. they’re slowly going blind), but Julia senses something’s wrong when her sister hangs herself in the basement - an apparent suicide, but what if it was more than that? “What if she wasn’t alone? What if she was with someone?” she wonders - but who? And who (or what) is the shadowy figure that keeps fl itting in and out of Julia’s failing vision? “Part psychological thriller, part slasher horror, part whodunnit,” wrote Empire magazine approvingly. In Spanish, obviously; made in 2010.

Four Weddings and a Funeral (Sigma, 22.20) It’s Hugh Grant, letting fly with a stream of expletives in the opening scene (he’s late for a wedding) yet emerging with his cuddly-Brit persona at its cuddliest. He’s the best man at the fi rst wedding, and makes an embarrassing speech - but also meets Andie MacDowell, a charming Yank who’s more experienced than she looks (cue countdown of past lovers, with Hugh looking increasingly flustered) and stands a good chance of walking down the aisle with Hugh at the fourth wedding. Also with Rowan Atkinson as an accident-prone vicar and W.H. Auden’s ‘Stop All the Clocks’, movingly quoted at the inevitable funeral. Made in 1994.
