BREAKING THE SURFACE

WINE & BUSINESS CLUB

16th August – 22nd September, 2019

Four Seasons Hotel, Limassol

Anassa Hotel, Neo Chorio Art Exhibition by Yorgos Papadopoulos (www.yorgos.studio)

Unlike any other glass artist, Yorgos does not treat his material with caution but rather with violence. He smashes, drops or shoots the glass. Breakage is demonstrated in this new show with a collection of New Icons. The randomness, the uncontrollability in the process of breaking is for Yorgos the divine hand in his art, not unlike the traditional acheiropoieta, icons that were considered to be made without human hands. Further explorations of materials, transparency and reflections combined with the philosophical considerations of unconventionality lead to recent works called Inside the Box. They are an invitation to look inside but think outside the box. A leading proponent of his unique technique, Papadopoulos’ highly experimental approach remains at the cutting edge of innovation in contemporary glass art. He is the author of the book titled Lamination, published in 2004 by A&C Black. He has exhibited extensively around the world.

WHERE ART MEETS NATURE

“KYPRIA” International Festival was born in 1993 and has a reputation for being the leading cultural event this island has to offer. It takes place annually in all major towns across Cyprus and aims to present Cypriots and visitors with a rich variety of high standard cultural events relating to music, opera, dance and theatre from Cyprus, Greece and further afield.

According to the Cultural Services Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture, “KYPRIA” has become the “catalyst of an unprecedented cultural movement which gives audiences a plethora of choices” and, to the greatest extent, “an opportunity for the representation and participation, of Cypriot artists and groups, without of course, detracting from the international character of the Festival.”

The “KYPRIA” Festival has hosted a number of worldwide renowned music ensembles including, but not limited to, the English National Symphony Orchestra, the Madrigalisti di Venezia, the European Union Baroque Orchestra, the Salzburg Philarmonic Chamber Orchestra and the State Orchestra of Greek Music. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“I LIKE TO EXHIBIT MY ART IN PUBLIC SPACES” MEET YIOTA IOANNIDOU

Leading Bronze Sculptor in Paphos

The Girl and the Sparrow sculptor, Yiota Ioannidou, is a Paphos-based artist who lives with her husband and two sons in Tala. She was born in Paphos and is a great advocate of the town. Her sculptures are very well-known and positioned in various locations including the Paphos Harbour, Old Town Paphos and Argaka. She is a great believer in Public Art and sharing her work so it can be seen by all.

“…BRING BACK THE CHILDREN AND BIRDS … REDEFINE THE ROLE OF THE SQUARE IN THE CITY” WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WISHED TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE FOR EXHIBITING?

From a very early age I was always drawing and creating. I knew even before starting school that I wanted to be an artist.

Without question, I like to exhibit my work in public spaces. I firmly believe that this takes them to a wider audience. PAFOS 2017 gave me the chance to see how public artworks can be seen by a bigger audience. This gives me the opportunity, as an artist, to communicate through my art with the public, rather than just an elite few in the art world. I have four of my works positioned in public places and they have been seen by a huge number of spectators. I want my art to be inclusive and available for everybody who wants to see it outside of a gallery setting.

WHERE DID YOU STUDY? I studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens. One of my lecturers there was Panayiotis Tetsis, who was a big influence on my work. Initially, I studied painting and drawing but I followed this with sculpture. It was by accident that I specialised in sculpture. The painting studios were so busy with people and I preferred the peace of the sculpture studio. The sculptural lecturer saw my work there and that is where I stayed for the following 3 years and specialised in sculpture. WHICH ARTISTS ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY? I absorb many influences around me. I have great admiration for the Cypriot sculptural artist, Angelos Makrides, who also studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens before me. I am also very fond of the Polish sculptor, Igor Mitoraj, who produced sculptures heavily influenced by the classical tradition, but always with a modern angle. I also admire the Italian sculptor, Giacomo Manzu, who often worked in bronze, as I favour this material for my works. My sculptures are often positioned near the sea and exposed to the harsh weather and salt.

Main photos by Amita Cathcart

I see the placing of one of my works as a huge responsibility. The public space does not belong to me. I am putting work on display without the permission of the spectator but I hope that they appreciate it. My work is also included in art collections around the world in Kuwait, Greece, USA and of course Cyprus. ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY THE NATURAL LANDSCAPE AROUND YOU HERE IN PAPHOS? The sea, for me, makes me see things in a different way. The sea and myths of Cyprus certainly inspire me. With my sculptures being positioned near the sea they have to be done in bronze otherwise they would not survive the exposure to salt water. The longer that they are there, the more character will develop in the bronze and I look forward to seeing these developments.

“SPARROWS ARE BIRDS THAT NEVER LIVE IN CAGES.” “I HAVE RECEIVED GREAT SUPPORT FROM THE PAPHOS MUNICIPALITY.”

16

September 2019

EXPLAIN THE ICONOGRAPHY IN SOME OF YOUR MOST FAMOUS WORKS. For example, in The Girl with the Sparrow it is because I want to bring back the children and the birds to the square. Sparrows are birds that never live in cages. They are always free and this is why I like them. The purpose of this sculptural composition in the square is expressing my own interest in my city – Paphos. Almost every city has at least one central and other smaller public squares, which are often a source of history and culture. The purpose of this sculptural composition in the square of administration is to redefine the role of the square in the city and to attract visitors. It is not just a way for me to actively express my interest in the city but also a way of dealing with a public, urban space and how it influences our human senses. Sol Alter is another one of my sculptures positioned next to the Paphos Castle and represents a young, contemporary Aphrodite who is secretly glancing at the landscape of Cyprus, trying to penetrate the beauty, mythical life and existence. Sol Alter stands for ‘other sun’ which was the name given to Aphrodite by Pythagoras.

I have received great support from the Paphos Municipality. They have listened to my ideas and enabled me to take them forward by allowing me to exhibit in public spaces. Such is my passion to make art available to everyone that I have provided the sculptures with no payment. I would very much like to encourage other artists to do the same and create something very special in Paphos. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOUR LATEST SCULPTURAL WORK IN PAPHOS? The Girl and the Sparrow had one of the birds stolen from it. I replaced the bird which had been stolen and it was taken again. It is not a problem unique to Paphos. Through my travels across Europe I have seen this happen a lot to public sculptures. It is just one of those unfortunate things and does not deter me from continuing with public displays.

“MY WORK IS INCLUDED IN ART COLLECTIONS AROUND THE WORLD.”

Maybe in other countries the whole sculpture would have disappeared!

17

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

DO YOU FEEL SUPPORTED IN THE ARTS BY THE PAPHOS MUNICIPALITY?

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? I generally don’t have time to think about the future. I am working and concentrating on the present. Whilst I am involved in projects abroad, anything else is at a very early stage. I am delighted that my most recent sculpture of a little girl, entitled ‘The Circle’, was donated by Mr Henry Jiang to be displayed in the Old Town of Paphos. Everything is moving fast as new ideas become outdated within a very short space of time. Staying one step ahead all the time is a great challenge. However, I am currently working on delivering two new projects. At the moment they are nearing completion and I am working very hard to finish them. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE REGENERATION OF PAPHOS? I think what they are doing in the Old Town has made a tremendous difference to Paphos. The restoration of so many buildings, new businesses and street art are all to be admired. I like most of what they have done. I think we need to see more art and sculptures by different artists to really create a route where art can be displayed. This could really be a great attraction for Paphos.

“I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE OTHER ARTISTS TO DISPLAY THEIR ART PUBLICLY”

TOP CAUSES OF DEVALUING A HOME CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO DO BEFORE PUTTING YOUR HOUSE ON THE MARKET Written by James Fraser Buying a house is generally the largest investment most people will make in their lifetime and it makes sense to maximise the value of your investment, especially when it is on the market. We all want to get the best possible price when selling our house, so it is essential to pay attention to the things that are most likely to have a negative impact on the property’s value. We all design and decorate our home to suit our personal taste. However, survey after survey of purchasers has shown that bold colours and decoration, can in fact, put off buyers. This is because they can more easily imagine how their own belongings would fit into a space without distractions. Many interior designers will say that neutral decoration makes a space seem bigger as well. The NAEA (National Association of Estate Agents) recommends redecorating in neutral tones before you put your house on the market. In the same vein, presentation is also one of the keys to a good and quick sale. We’ve included a checklist below of things to do before putting your house on the market:

CLEANLINESS

NEAT GARDEN

The house should be cleaned thoroughly and any outstanding DIY jobs finished off.

The same goes for the garden and outdoor entertaining areas. Make sure the garden is weed free, shrubs are pruned and leaves swept up. Replace faded outdoor furniture, cushions, pergolas and awnings.

CLUTTER Clutter should be cleared away. As a rule of thumb, remove one third of ornaments and photographs from shelves and display cabinets. This same rule should apply to your kitchen surfaces as well. If a home is clean and smells fresh and has lots of space, it has a much greater chance of selling quickly. NATURAL LIGHT It is generally agreed that we have more than enough sunlight here in Cyprus, so make the most of it. Dark and dingy rooms always seem small so let some light in. Start outside and make sure there are no trees or climbing plants obstructing the light from coming in, or the view of the Mediterranean sparkling away in the distance. Also, don’t forget to clean your windows and repair any splits in the flyscreens! SWIMMING POOL If you have a swimming pool, make sure it is in tip-top condition and looks crystal clean and inviting. Have a look at the liner. Is it faded and bleached and in need of replacement? If your pool is tiled, are any tiles chipped or cracked and need replacing? Remove limescale stains and try to clean the grouting as well. Swimming pools are usually a large feature of the outdoor space in Cyprus, so make sure it looks its best.

20

September 2019

GENERAL MAINTENANCE The condition of the property is another important area to pay attention to, as poor maintenance has a significant effect on the value. Issues such as cracks in the walls, damp patches and flaking paint can adversely affect the value of the property and interest from potential buyers. LEGAL One of the biggest impacts on the value of your property is the legal side. If your title deeds have been issued, make sure you have an up-to-date copy. If your property does not have title deeds issued, do everything in your power to get them. If you completed any works during ownership, such as extensions or conversions, make sure you have the appropriate planning permissions and certificates of completion, and have access to these documents. If you do not have them, you may find that you have to pay for them retrospectively anyway, to agree a sale. With current market conditions as they are in Cyprus, it is worth taking the time, trouble and expense to make sure your property is in great condition and ready to be marketed in order to maximise the value and interest from buyers.

‘BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS’ ANDREAS ANDREOU MultiBusiness Ltd

Andreas Andreou grew up in Geroskipou but moved to central Paphos when he got engaged as a young man. Following his 2 years of national service in the army, he went to Athens University on a scholarship where he studied Economics and Business studies. After his graduation he returned to Cyprus and studied with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants to become a fully qualified accountant. He also worked for one of the largest auditors in Paphos to further qualify as an auditor. After working for other firms in the area he decided that he wanted to launch his own audit company and launched MultiBusiness in January of 2010. Andreou states

“My main priority was to offer high quality accounting, audit and taxation services combined with a good pricing structure for my clients”. The slogan for the company from the very start was ‘because quality matters’. Initially he started with just a few clients but now looks after hundreds of businesses in Paphos. He has built his client base mainly by customer recommendations and now leads a team of 16 staff who have all been selected at the highest level for their qualifications and skills. Due to the business climate in Paphos and the Cypriot economy improving greatly over the last few years, Andreou has seen most of his company clients to be profitable. This has led him to further develop his professional services so that clients can take the necessary steps required to be successful in the long-term. These include accounting, auditing, taxation, consulting and other related professional services.

Two companies in Paphos that have benefited from using MultiBusiness Ltd are Cypriano Property Valuers Ltd and M.S.V. Interactive Ad Ltd. Dimitris Chrysanthou from Cypriano states

“it was a friend that first recommended me to Andreas Andreou. My friend had used the audit firm Multibusiness for many years and said that they offered a highly professional service. I am very pleased with my decision to use them and would recommend them to anyone.” Another very satisfied customer is Makis Efstathiou from M.S.V. Interactive Ad Ltd who is also the owner of Loft Club and he says

“For anyone looking for an accountant to help with their business I would have no hesitation in recommending audit firm MultiBusiness. Excellent, professional service.” Currently, MultiBusiness Ltd is one of the largest audit firms in Paphos but they intend to expand into other towns in Cyprus in the near future. Andreou’s goal is to be able to advise business owners on the best and most profitable way to run the business side of their company. They will then be able to make the best decisions relating to the accounting and taxation side of their business whilst also taking into consideration the current economic climate.

“My aim is to be able to advise our clients at the highest level on all aspects of their business. My staff are multi-lingual so we are able to look after British and Russian clients too” says Andreou. Section Sponsored by

MEET STEPHEN LILLIE

British High Commissioner to Cyprus

The new British High Commissioner arrived in Cyprus last year in April to take up his new post. Based in Nicosia, Mr Stephen Lillie relished the chance to come to Cyprus with his wife, Denise, and they live together in the High Commissioner’s residence. Their two sons are currently studying at university in the UK.

“I HAVE HEARD EXCELLENT REPORTS ABOUT THE REGENERATION OF PAPHOS OLD TOWN.” WHERE ARE YOU ORIGINALLY FROM? I was born in Bradford which makes me a Yorkshireman, but I actually grew up in Nottingham, which also means I am a Nottinghamshire man. This ties in very well with the serving regiments who are currently here in Cyprus – The 2nd Battalion Royal Anglians and 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment. I studied German and French at Queen’s College, Oxford University. Upon graduating, I joined the Foreign Office where I spent 2 years learning Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This led to postings in China, and a subsequent career focused on Asia, with more postings to India and also to the Philippines where I served as British Ambassador from 2009 – 2013. I received a CMG in 2017 for services to UK relations with Asia. This was presented to me by HRH The Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace in March 2018, shortly before I came to Cyprus.

Following five years in the UK as Director of Asia Pacific at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we moved to Cyprus in April, 2018. WHY DID YOU JOIN THE DIPLOMATIC SERVICE? I have always been fascinated by international politics and foreign relations. And I was also interested in foreign languages, which I studied at university. The Diplomatic Service is the perfect career for someone with those shared interests, all the more so if, like me, you are attracted to living overseas and travelling to different destinations. HOW DO YOU LIKE CYPRUS? I am very much enjoying my time in Cyprus. I came here with no pre-conceptions and feel that I came with a fresh pair of eyes to the Cyprus problem. We are based in Nicosia but have enjoyed going out and about across the island. It has been a wonderful experience to explore Cyprus and discover the place, the scenery and the culture. Before coming to Cyprus I learnt to speak Greek to help enhance my experience of the island, but still need to keep practising. WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? I’m here to promote and protect the UK’s interests in Cyprus across the board. A big focus of our work at the moment is Brexit. Since I arrived, I’ve been very clear that Brexit will not mean a reduction in UK engagement in Cyprus. So we are actively promoting UK interests in a whole range of areas, from business to education, from law enforcement to military Photography by Amita Cathcart

“BREXIT WILL NOT MEAN A REDUCTION IN UK ENGAGEMENT IN CYPRUS”

co-operation. I also closely follow political issues such as the Cyprus problem. An important part of my job here involves supporting our British community, who not only live here, but also holiday here. There are 70,000 British citizens living in the Republic and over 13,000 living in the north of the island. In addition each year we have 1.3 million visitors to the island from the UK. We provide assistance to visitors in a variety of situations. We provide support to British citizens in difficulties – both residents and visitors. We focus as a team on the most vulnerable who may need our help. Very often we work in the area of health needs and try and work with others to support those going through hard times. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR PROFESSION?

“IT IS THE VARIETY OF MY DAY THAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING PART.”

I would say that it is the variety of my day that is the most interesting part. I find myself dealing with a whole range of very different issues. For example a typical day could be meeting a government minister, having lunch with business people, a media interview and then a meeting with members of the British community. This gives me the chance to meet a variety of people from different cultures. Being out and about is very much a part of my job. WHAT IS THE WORST PART OF THE JOB? The only hard part is that you are never truly completely off duty. The work is very full on and does not stop, even if I take a day off. I always need to be fully available to deal with situations which may arise. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING? One of my perfect days out would be to do a hike that finished with a nice taverna at the end of the walk. I particularly enjoy the countryside of the Troodos Mountains. In the end, ambassadors and high commissioners are the same as everybody else. So I also enjoy listening to music, watching television (usually crime or other dramas) and reading. I have enjoyed visiting the Paphos District where we have done many Brexit outreach events. We did three events in Paphos once in one day. On future visits to Paphos, when I am not quite so busy, I hope to be able to explore the old town area as I have heard excellent reports about the regeneration there. The area around Polis and Latchi is particularly beautiful. The Paphos Forest and Cedar Valley are areas I look forward to further exploring. I have also been very impressed with the high standard of Cypriot wines and relish the chance to visit the numerous wineries across Cyprus. At our events we serve Cypriot wine at The High Commission.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“GREAT BRITAIN IS A FRIEND OF THE CYPRIOT PEOPLE”

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE TO BRITISH CITIZENS AT THIS TIME? The UK Government is committed to leaving the European Union on the 31st October of this year. Our British citizens need to prepare for this to happen. Whilst agreements have been reached with the European Union to safeguard the rights of UK nationals, it is essential that British Citizens have secured either an MEU 1 (temporary residence) or an MEU 3 (permanent residence). This will ensure that, after Brexit, our citizens will have the same rights as they do now. For example, the right to live here and to work, own property and access benefits like healthcare and social security.

I cannot stress enough that all British Nationals must do this to be properly registered with the Cypriot authorities. If you have an old Alien Registration Card (ARC) from years ago, or an outdated and invalid immigration stamp in your passport, you must also change this to an MEU 1 or 3 - with no exceptions! If you do not do so, it could restrict your ability to live in Cyprus post-Brexit. Editor’s note: Since this interview took place, the Cyprus House of Representatives has unanimously approved a bill which guarantees that even in a No Deal Brexit, UK nationals legally residing in Cyprus before Brexit will retain their citizens’ rights. The above registration advice still stands in order to qualify.

31

“…IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT BRITISH CITIZENS HAVE SECURED EITHER AN MEU 1 OR AN MEU 3.” WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS AT THE HIGH COMMISSION? My main aim is to build a positive and modern relationship between the UK and Cyprus. We share lots of great history, but we need to focus together on the future challenges and opportunities we may face. We are also taking the High Commission and our work to a larger audience through social media to explain what we do. We are doing projects, for example, to reconnect with Cypriots who have studied in the UK. There are tens of thousands of Cypriot students who have graduated from the UK and we are very keen to maintain our relationship with them. We are working with various alumni and university groups to keep in touch. The UK/Cyprus partnership is a very special relationship. We are working together in many areas, from education, science and innovation to trade, investment, legal co-operation, entrepreneurship, environmental issues and security issues; and as partners within the Commonwealth. Our co-operation is about much more than the Cyprus problem or the British Bases in Cyprus, important though these are. One of my main aims is to ensure that Brexit, when it happens, does not diminish relations between Britain and Cyprus and to make sure that wider negotiations do not lead to barriers to trade. I also want to make sure that there are no problems for Britons living in Cyprus and for Cypriots living in the UK. We also hope to make a positive contribution to the Cyprus Problem. Great Britain, as a friend of the Cypriot people, will always do what we can to support the process.

WINE COLUMN

ALL ABOUT WINE Written by George Kassianos on Tsangarides Winery President of Cyprus Sommeliers Association

“TSANGARIDES WINERY IS WHERE A FAMILY’S LIVELIHOOD IS ALSO THEIR PASSION.”

“IF A VARIETY FINDS ITS MASTER, IT CAN DO MIRACLES.” Angelos Tsangarides is at the forefront of the new generation of winemakers in Cyprus and part of a new wave movement of winemakers across the island. I once described him as a ‘young gun’ but now he should be referred to as an ‘experienced pistolero’. Today, Tsangarides is one of the most distinguished personalities in the Cypriot winemaking field. Tsangarides Mataro and Shiraz Rosé are two of their emblematic brands that have maintained their excellent level of quality over the years. As for Xynisteri, it is a wine that proves that if a variety “finds its master” it can do miracles. Angelos Tsangarides’ grandfather and father prepared the ground by planting and then looking after the first vineyards of the family. It only seems natural that since his teenage years, wine production technology has been of great interest to him. Although he initially followed another professional career, he soon abandoned it and ended up attending various oenology courses. His love for nature did not stop in just looking after the vineyards. Angelos Tsangarides developed a keen interest in organic farming and how it works in harmony with nature rather than against it. This new direction resulted in the creation of the winery, which is situated in the village of Lemona in the Pafos region. His vision and desire became reality. Tsangarides winery has over 200 hectares of organic vineyards and is renowned for being one of the best in Cyprus. Organic farming involves using techniques to achieve good crop yields without harming the natural environment or the people who live and work in it. He believes that whatever you’re buying – from cotton buds to wine – when you choose organic food, beauty or textiles,

you choose products that promote a better world. Once you meet Angelos, you know this to be true. The modernisation of the vineyards and the establishment of modern equipment in the winery have led to the production of good and, in some cases, excellent quality wines. Angelos Tsangarides managed to bring local wines out of obscurity and mediocrity and to give them quality credentials. As for the varieties, he has already acquired many fans with his Xynisteri and his Maratheftiko, two of the most famous native varieties. The variety, however, that gives him his highest credentials is the red variety Mourvèdre or Mattaro, a grape variety known for excellent wines in southern France. Mourvèdre is however of Spanish origin and is called Monastrell. In recent years, it has been produced from organic vineyards. The winery also produces red wine from the Cabernet Sauvignon variety from organic vineyards, as well as Maratheftiko blended with Shiraz to create an excellent semi-dry rosé. The cosmopolitan Chardonnay white variety compliments the series of organic wine vineyard labels. Five out of a total of eight labels are organic. In addition to the dry and semi-dry Xynisteri, there is the rosé, Shiraz, and the red Saint Ephraim, a blend of red varieties, usually Cabernet Sauvignon, Mattaro and Shiraz, plus two Cypriot varieties. Also, for the wine lovers the winery offers sweet wine from the Moscato variety. Angelos is not alone in his effort to ensure the winery continues to thrive. Loukia, Angelos’ sister, also shares the responsibility. Tsangarides has a solid history in the art of winemaking and is en-route to opening up yet more ‘wine frontiers’ as they face the ever-changing challenges of modern winemaking.

WINE NEWS

ZAMBARTAS WINERY LAUNCHES SINGLE VINEYARD RANGE Zambartas Winery in Agios Amvrosios has just launched a new range of “Single Vineyard” wines. This series of wines includes four different wines which are all produced out of a single varietal and unique vineyard. Their main aim is to highlight the importance of the vineyard and its natural habitat. As Marcos Zambartas states “All vineyards are organically grown. We apply limited intervention winemaking and therefore the wines express the unique terroir of Cyprus. Our range includes a white Xynisteri, rosé made from Maratheftiko, a red Shiraz and finally a unique red wine, Margelina, produced from Mavro vineyard which is nearly 100 years old”.

TSIAKKAS WINERY LAUNCHES NEW RANGE ‘EPILOGI’ Tsiakkas Winery in Pelendri has just launched 4 new labels under the name Epilogi. In general, epilogi means selection in Greek. Orestis Tsiakkas states “The idea behind this line of labels, are wines that are experimental in nature and we believe are a good quality to be released from the winery”.

Epilogi 1: Merlot Keramis This is a single vineyard merlot from our vineyard in Kerami. The idea behind this wine is to express this mono-varietal wine in its pure terroir form. It is a premium wine that has a long ageing potential.

Epilogi 2: Xynisteri Terroir This wine is being produced from grapes originating solely from the Pitsilia area. The vineyard is found at an altitude of 1350 metres. The altitude of the vineyard gives high acidity and high concentration to the grapes, which in turn provide a long ageing potential to the wine.

Epilogi 3: Orange Wine Orange Wine is made from the extended maceration of white grape skins with their must. Due to the maceration and the extensive oxidation it gets this orange colour. Orange Wine was typically made in the older times. It was made in this way because the wine receives a high phenolic concentration which helps the wine to last longer and to be protected from oxidation.

Epilogi 4: Mavro Mouklos The Mavro variety is the most predominant Cypriot variety. It is mainly used to make bulk wine and commandaria. Mouklos is an old vineyard (65 years plus) that the winery has recently bought. The original idea was to uproot the vineyard in order to plant something else. However, before doing so, they decided to experiment on this variety in order to see its potential. The wine-making team decided to make a light easy to drink red wine that can be enjoyed even during the summer. The experiment was a success and now Mavro can be enjoyed slightly chilled throughout the whole year.

FROM THE CHEF’S TABLE

FROM THE CHEF’S TABLE MEET MICHAEL LIPSCOMBE

EXECUTIVE CHEF, 5* ELYSIUM HOTEL Every month we speak to a different Chef about their favourite and most recommended recipe. This month we visited Michael Lipscombe, the Executive Chef at the Elysium Hotel.

Michael Lipscombe arrived at The Elysium Hotel in Paphos in January of 2019 to take up the position of Executive Chef. He relocated to Cyprus with his Cypriot wife and two children after a very impressive professional career in the UK. Lipscombe knew from a very early age that he wanted to be a chef and applied at the young age of 16 for a job at London’s leading restaurant, The Ivy. He was told to build up his knowledge and then come back to them in a few years. After he worked in different kitchens in London and Ascot, he tried again at The Ivy to become a commis chef. This time he was successful and stayed there for two years. He went on to work with some of the top names in the industry including Raymond Brown, Gary Rhodes, Jason Atherton and Albert Roux.

“Cooking for Chef Albert Roux is most certainly the most terrifying person you can cook for – luckily, when I have cooked for him he has only ever been complimentary” says Lipscombe. Through an associate in the industry he was recommended for his current position at The Elysium. Today he leads a team of 65 in the kitchens covering all the restaurants at this 5 star hotel with their sole aim being to further grow their reputation for excellent fine dining.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

A UNIQUE GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCE KOUTOUROU OUZERI OLD TOWN PAPHOS

“I WANT TO DO SIMPLE CUISINE WITH EXCELLENT INGREDIENTS” Demetris Nicolaou, Koutourou Koutourou Ouzeri is a popular restaurant situated by the Municipal Park near Eros Square in the centre of Old Town Paphos. Housed in a traditional building, Koutourou is filled with interesting artefacts, mainly from the 20th Century and is beautifully designed to give the feel of a unique, trendy space in London. It was opened in June of 2014 by the charming owner and head chef, Demetris Nicolaou, who now leads a team of nine staff working both in the kitchen and front of house. Koutourou is not just a meze place – it is so much more than that. The menu changes every day, in order to provide the diner with the freshest ingredients. Do not let the dishes mislead you; they are large and designed to be shared at the table. As Demetris says

“I want to do simple cuisine with excellent ingredients that are not smothered with coverings. I believe if you cover good ingredients, you have lost the taste”. Koutourou, translated literally, means ‘randomly’. You can select the dishes you want to enjoy. Most of the vegetables used in the restaurant are homegrown in their own garden in Paphos. Front of house is covered by a very friendly and efficient team who serve the food at the tables and look after all the guests, whilst chef Demetris can be seen in full view cooking away in the kitchen. On the night we dined there we enjoyed a wonderful selection of dishes served with a beautiful home-baked loaf of bread. The beetroot salad with tahini and honey was exquisite and perfectly balanced. Their most popular dish at Koutourou is the oven-baked halloumi with honey which the whole table marvelled at. Our main dishes of prawns in beer and duck with peanut butter certainly lived up to Koutourou’s reputation of Mediterranean Cuisine with its own identity. Certainly, in all the food you can taste influences from Asia, North America and South America. On the side we enjoyed roasted cauliflower, roasted potatoes and a unique spicy cheese dip. All together this made a unique gastronomic experience. Booking is absolutely essential.

THE PLACE TO BE

THE PLACE TO BE OURANOS LOUNGE BAR & RESTAURANT ANNABELLE HOTEL, PAPHOS

‘A TRULY UNIQUE AFTERNOON TEA EXPERIENCE’ There are many options in Paphos where we can enjoy Afternoon Tea, but one of the lesser known venues is the relatively new and beautifully positioned Ouranos Restaurant and Bar at The Annabelle Hotel. The hotel, made famous not just by its clientele, has created a restaurant and cocktail bar on the roof of its newly-built extension. The bar is stocked with no less than 45 different varieties of gin and 25 malt whiskies! Ouranos presents a beautiful alternative for Afternoon Tea with a choice of 3 different set menus. The restaurant offers superb views of the sea and has been designed by an interior designer from Paris. It also offers peace to meet with friends and relax in luxury over an everlasting afternoon treat. Priced at 16 euros per person, the menu includes a choice of tea or coffee. Entitled “Afternoon Tea Experience”, the menu offers three alternatives to suit personal tastes: • Cypriot Afternoon Tea • English Afternoon Tea • Asian Afternoon Tea On the afternoon we visited, we voted for the old favourite of English which included raisin scones, walnut soft brownie, Victoria sponge sandwich, apple crumble and a fresh fruit tart. These delights were served with sandwiches of Norwegian smoked salmon and cream cheese with citrus, coronation chicken with apple, egg and watercress. The Cypriot Afternoon Tea Experience includes Cypriot specialities and the Asian one has the emphasis on spices and unusual combinations from the east. We were very attracted to the dark chocolate tart with Sichuan pepper. Entertainment & Dress Code Ouranos Bar also holds regular entertainment nights with live singing and DJs playing the music. It is definitely the new hot-spot for eating and drinking - in style - in Paphos. Mentioning style, they have a very strict dress code of smart casual for dinner which means no shorts, flip flops or sports attire. If you have a special occasion or just fancy treating yourself, you can’t go wrong with Afternoon Tea at Ouranos.

MEET GEORGE KASSIANOS

Wine Writer & President of Cyprus Sommeliers Association George Kassianos is the President of the Cyprus Sommeliers Association, the wine columnist for Sunday Cyprus Mail, Check in Magazine and Cyprus in Style Lifestyle Magazine. After a lifetime in hotel management he is now the Training and Quality Manager for the Thanos Hotel Group. He is on the board of several wine committees including the Wine Expert Committee which approves the appellation of wines from Cyprus. He was born and spent his early childhood in Morphou but after 1974 he relocated to Nicosia where he grew up. He now lives in Paphos.

“ALL THE BIG NAMES IN THE WORLD WINE INDUSTRY WILL BE GATHERING IN CYPRUS IN 2020” WHEN DID YOUR REALISE YOU LOVED WINE?

grew from there.

After I finished my studies at school, I went to London to study for a degree in hotel management. After I graduated, I received a very attractive offer from Sheraton Hotels to work in their London hotels and later enter their management programme in the USA. But I decided against this and gained a lot of experience working in hotels and restaurants in London.

I had to talk to the class about the wine laws and I presented them with a Chablis and Beaujolais, which were the first wines I ever bought. I selected them after reading a book which my uncle had bought for me. I started studying wine by tasting wines and learning about them. I then went on to visit France, bought wine and took the bottles back to London.

I actually never tasted wine until the age of 21. I had always drunk beer, brandy or whisky. Then one evening, during a meal with my father at a fish restaurant, I drank a rosé wine by Keo which I realised went really well with the meal. This was my first appreciation of how wine can improve the taste of food. As part of my degree I had to study oenology and started with the wine laws of France - my fascination

Portrait photography by Amita Cathcart

This led me to doing extra classes at the Court of Master Sommeliers under Brian Julian. A sommelier can be defined as a trained and knowledgeable wine professional. I was obsessed with wine and also with the role of sommeliers. My first job as a sommelier was with the three Michelin starred chef, Nico Ledenis, in his restaurant in Pimlico, London.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“THE FUTURE IS VERY GOOD FOR CYPRIOT WINE”

WHAT WAS YOUR EARLY CAREER?

“THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO SHOW THE WORLD WHAT CYPRUS HAS TO OFFER” “I WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE EASTERN REGION OF EUROPE TO TRAIN THE WINE PROFESSIONALS FOR THE FUTURE.”

I was unsure if I should specialise to be a sommelier or work in hotel management but in the end, I decided to return to Cyprus. Whilst I selected hotel management with Thanos Hotels and Resorts, I also spent a lot of time still studying wine with a great emphasis on the developments of Cypriot wine. I have worked in hotel management at the Annabelle Hotel, Coral Beach Hotel and Alexander the Great Hotel, all in Paphos. In 1998 the Annabelle Hotel decided to launch a Year of Wine and I was involved in the planning and organisation of wine writers to come from the UK to Cyprus. I had the knowledge to take them around the local wineries. We went on to do a brochure about Cypriot wine, written in English and German, and won an award from the International Marketing Institute. HOW DID YOU GET INTO WINE WRITING? Many years ago the late Jill Campbell Mackay, a leading journalist at the time in Cyprus, came to one of my talks on wine. After this she wrote a review about it for the Cyprus Mail. She wrote the restaurant reviews for Cyprus Mail and our friendship grew as I advised her on wine pairings with her food for the reviews. When the original wine columnist for the Mail left, Jill suggested my name to take over and encouraged me to write. I have written the wine column for the Sunday Cyprus Mail since 2003. My friendship with Jill grew and we became very close; I am always very grateful for the support she offered me in my career. DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS SOMMELIERS ASSOCIATION. In 2007, I attended, as a journalist, the world competition organised by the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) in Rhodes. The year after, I became the 2nd President of the Cyprus Sommeliers Association, a position I have held since then, apart from a break between 2012 -2014 when I was re-elected. Now, as the President of CSA, our prime role is to ensure that, through the proper training of professionals, the culture of wine is promoted. Whilst we place great emphasis on Cypriot wine, we are also working with spirits, beer, coffee, tea, chocolate, mineral water and cigars. Our priority is to ensure that members get the proper training they need. The association is a non-profit making organisation, so we must always ensure sponsorship and support from the government and private sectors. We organise training events and represent Cyprus to the ASI through competitions such as Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa and Best Sommelier of the World. We also hold national competitions with Best Sommelier of Cyprus, which is held every 3 years, and Best Young Sommelier, which is an annual competition. We are always recruiting and encouraging new members to join our association.

September 2019

Currently there are about twelve wineries which are leading the way in Cyprus. The ones who follow their successful methods of making good wines and marketing will do well, but the ones who don’t, will cease to exist. The future is very good for Cypriot wine as the wineries are employing professional oenologists to look after their vineyards. They are also using more and more indigenous grape varieties and also expanding the wineries to attract visitors. They do this through the introduction of restaurants, tasting areas and lifestyle features. Of course, of paramount importance is to look after their vineyards. TELL US ABOUT THE EXCITING PLANS FOR ‘THE BEST SOMMELIER OF EUROPE AND AFRICA’ AWARD COMPETITION IN CYPRUS IN 2020. Over three years ago we decided that we would try to win the huge opportunity for Cyprus to host the Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa, mainly because we feel confident in our infrastructure and we have the vineyards here to show off our wine. Two years ago we were unanimously voted at the ASI General Assembly, as the host country. We beat other countries including Spain.

We have been working on this project and it will take place on November 16th – 20th in 2020 in Limassol. In addition to the competitors, the event will include 55 of the leading wine journalists and the Sommelier Association Presidents of 65 member countries flying in to Cyprus. This is our chance to show the world what Cyprus has to offer and also to promote our wine. All the big names in the world wine industry will be gathering in Cyprus in 2020. The last live final of the competition was live streamed to an audience in excess of 1.8 million viewers and we are hoping for a similar figure from Cyprus. ARE YOU A RED, WHITE OR ROSÉ MAN? I don’t have a favourite here but I do favour certain grape varieties. With red I like Pinot Noir, a grape which is difficult to grow but once you do, can produce some of the best wine in the world. With white wine I appreciate the Riesling grape which has complex, powerful qualities. In Cyprus I am very happy to see many varieties but I am especially excited for the Xynisteri grape. I particularly look forward to the development of Promara, Morokanella, Spourtico and Yiannoudi varieties, not forgetting Commandaria, our flagship wine in Cyprus.

“I HAVE WRITTEN THE WINE COLUMN FOR THE SUNDAY CYPRUS MAIL SINCE 2003.”

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

HOW DO YOU SEE THE FUTURE OF CYPRIOT WINERIES?

“WE ARE ALWAYS RECRUITING AND ENCOURAGING NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN OUR ASSOCIATION.” DO YOU ENJOY JUDGING SO MANY INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS? I really do, as I am always gaining experience. With every wine that you taste you are always learning. Wine is never the same as it evolves over time. Judging competitions takes me all over the world and gives me the chance to connect with other wine professionals to learn the latest trends. I have travelled all over Europe, South Africa, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Japan and Hong Kong to judge competitions. WHO IS YOUR WINE HERO? Without doubt it is Gerard Basset from France, who worked for most of his career in the UK. He had so much knowledge and passion. He also had a real vision of what a sommelier

50

September 2019

should be. I most admired his humility on meeting him. He was, in my opinion, the greatest sommelier and had every accolade in the wine industry. I was very sad when he died recently from cancer. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? Obviously, right now I am working very hard towards the 2020 competition. After this I would very much like to open a School for Sommeliers in Cyprus. I would like to create a centre of excellence for the Eastern region of Europe to train the wine professionals for the future. After that I will retire and enjoy my wine cellar, although I don’t think I will ever slow down.

FEATURED Artist

CHRISAVYI NEOPHITOU Paphos Based Artist

“MY SOUL AND THOUGHTS ARE COMMUNICATED THROUGH ART AS I AM ON A CONTINUAL SEARCH AND JOURNEY TO MY OWN INNER WORLD”. The Paphos based artist, Chrisavyi Neophitou, works from her gallery in the Old Town. She is a self-taught artist and sees art as a way of expressing her feelings. She states that “My soul and thoughts are communicated through art as I am on a continual search and journey to my own inner world”. Chrisavyi is an observer of human emotions through everyday life. She is inspired by what she sees around her and how it makes her feel. She finds great inspiration through people’s behaviour and this is reflected in her choice of colours, which is influenced by our island, surrounded by the ever-changing shades of blue from the sea. Although Chrisavyi works in many media including charcoal and oil, she is always keen to experiment with new styles and techniques. Her subjects are wide-ranging but she favours the human form, especially nudes, as she says this represents “freedom, purity and the simplicity of our being.” She has participated in over 25 group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including the second International Art Festival in Nicosia. She is a collaborator on cultural issues in the newspaper, Antilogos, and has also had two of her paintings used as front covers for two poetry books. She greatly admires a wide range of past artists, including Tamara de Lempicka from the twentieth century, Sandro Botticelli from the sixteenth century and the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. Currently, she is working on a future solo exhibition to be held at her own art gallery, ‘Chrisavyi’s Art Gallery’, situated near Ibrahim’s Khan in the Old Town of Paphos.

CULTURAL SPACE

“THE ENERGY HERE IS AMAZING” CHAKRA ART GALLERY OLD TOWN PAPHOS

Chakra Art Gallery was born in Paphos in October of 2017 and has since grown into a homely cultural space where over 40 artists from across the island showcase their art. This beautifully renovated, traditional stone house holds a great energy, and has become well known for its vibrant and uniquely styled events taking over the Secret Garden. Its beautiful sea views, refreshing drinks and excellent music choice make you never want to leave. At the front of the building, you will see the glistening ‘Paphos Mosaic Map’ designed and built by children aged 4-9 under the guidance of leading mosaic artists, Sharen Taylor and Mary Chojnowski. Also, a very large mural (you cannot miss it) designed and created by street artist, Anatolios Spyrlidis, also known as RoyalVenom. As you walk through the Secret Garden, you will also find a small bar called ‘Interlandia’ housed in the outbuilding at the back. It is named after the large wooden boat structure designed by local Cypriot artist, Zenon and made entirely from oceanic debris. The boat is displayed above the bar. Sit in the sun (or in the bar) and enjoy a G+T, a beer, a glass of wine or even a delicious frappé.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

“OUR AIM IS TO PROMOTE TALENTED MUSICIANS” MEET ANDREW OLIVER

President of Paphos Music Lovers Association

Andrew Oliver lives with his wife in Paphos, but travels extensively to attend musical concerts across Europe. He is the President of Paphos Music Lovers Association which promotes music of all genres and arranges concerts across the region. A professional musician himself, he has played the piano from a very early age.

“I TRAVELLED ALL OVER THE WORLD DOING GIGS FOR 18 YEARS, OFTEN WITH A MINDER OF MY OWN.” HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? When I was nine years old my father was the manager of a dance hall where he held many concerts. My interest in music started when I heard the rock band Status Quo performing at the dance hall shortly after they had had their first hit. Watching the real Status Quo really brought music to life for me. In the dance hall there was a stage and a grand piano. That is where I learnt to play the piano and when I practised it was always with an audience as the dance hall was busy. It was good for my later career as I never had a fear of an audience. I went on to join the school orchestra and played a variety of instruments including the recorder and clarinet. WHAT WAS YOUR PREVIOUS CAREER? At the age of 16 I went to Music College in Colchester where I continued to learn the piano and also to learn the art of music composition, which I found fascinating. I also learnt to sing. On leaving music school I formed a pop group called Fiesta Show Band.

I then moved on to performing in piano bars again and did a very long tour in Norway where I performed in front of a nightly audience of up to 1000 people. The idea was that we played any song we liked but we always did the No. 1s from the charts. WHEN DID YOU COME TO CYPRUS? When I turned 50 my agent suggested a 6 month tour in Cyprus. I thought, ‘why not?’ for a change, and came. Such was my fascination for the place I decided to put down roots and bought a stone house in Lania. After my 6 months I decided to come back and spent 10 years arranging tribute band concerts and performing myself. I was discovered by local tv and radio stations and was inundated with work. But my end mission was to promote local musicians. I did this through many shows, but thoroughly enjoyed working on the Ratpack Shows. Then I was offered the opportunity to tour for 3 years on cruise ships to some amazing destinations. I was keen though, to return to Cyprus so I could marry my Hamburg sweetheart, Christiane, in 2018.

There were 5 in the band who were all graduates of classical music. Over the next 20 years I toured with different bands. In the 1980’s, with the advent of karaoke, I started playing in piano bars. During an audition for the Café Royal in Regent Street, London, I was asked to perform two Elton John numbers. This led me in a new direction as an Elton John tribute act. I was no longer just a musician but now found myself as an entertainer. Whilst I have never met Elton John, he has stated that I was very good as a tribute and I travelled all over the world doing gigs for 18 years, often with a minder of my own.

WHEN DID YOU HAVE YOUR LIGHT BULB MOMENT TO CREATE PAPHOS MUSIC LOVERS? I spend a lot of time in Hamburg with my German wife. Hamburg is a very cultured city and what I have tried to do is bring many of their ideas back to Paphos. Paphos Music Lovers is a non-profit association which is dedicated to helping musicians find new venues and, in turn, open up the musical performances to more people. A big part of our work is publicising the events through our newsletter, Facebook and website. Where we see a need, we create and promote a certain genre of music. Paphos is strong in the rock/pop concerts but where we saw a void was in classical performances. Most months we create 3 -10 concerts and during the Bach Festival we put on 10 events. These are all designed for everyone to enjoy and to appreciate the music. In June we organised 5 concerts. In September/October we have our World Music Festival when we have musicians flying in from overseas who will perform at 11 events.

“WATCHING THE REAL STATUS QUO REALLY BROUGHT MUSIC TO LIFE FOR ME.” “WHERE WE SEE A NEED, WE CREATE AND PROMOTE A CERTAIN GENRE OF MUSIC.”

66

September 2019

WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE AIMS? The aim is always to promote and publicise music. I realised from the beginning that I could never do such a big job on my own. Paphos Music Lovers is a group of like-minded people who all share the same aim. As their President, I am using my many years of experience to show how to organise, support and grow. It was in 2017, following our year of culture that I saw the need for more concerts in Paphos. 2017 proved to me that you can never have too many concerts – put them on and the audiences will come. Our events take place through volunteer support and sponsorship. My main future aim for the association is to eventually make myself dispensable and hand over to others. We now have over 50 volunteers and members who, with guidance, are taking the association forward and are learning how to organise and promote events. We have recently appointed our first part-time professional Arts Administrator called Dan Merson who is bringing a wealth of experience to the role.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

It is very hard for me to decide between Bach or Mozart. Mozart came after Bach. Between the two, I think I would go for Mozart as he never wrote a bad tune. I hope to arrange a festival around Mozart one day.

After such a busy professional career I am always careful never to get bored. In Paphos I enjoy many activity groups which include four walking groups a week, a media studies group, a Jazz appreciation group and a history group. Obviously, I intend to concentrate and grow the Paphos Music Lovers Association over the next few years. I also plan to walk more and enjoy my semi-retirement with my new wife.

WHAT IS THE BEST CONCERT YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO? The best concert I have listened to took place last March. It was the Brandenburg Concert No. 5 which was performed by members of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra at the hall at La Scala de Paphos. I felt so proud having arranged these top musicians to come down from Nicosia and perform this masterpiece, which was breathtaking.

Further information can be found about Paphos Music Lovers on their website PaphosMusicLovers.com and a selection of their events are included in our own Events Guide.

“2017 PROVED TO ME THAT YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY CONCERTS – PUT THEM ON AND THE AUDIENCES WILL COME.”

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IS A WEALTHY LIFESTYLE. DO YOU START YOUR DAY THE RIGHT WAY? What is the first thing you do in the morning when you open your eyes? Before you think about coffee. You stretch out your arms and legs from the sleeping position you are in and prepare to stand. Stretching is instinctive for humans and animals after a long night’s sleep and the benefits are more than you think. In this article, we delve deeper into the art of stretching and show you how to maximise your ‘morning stretch’. Stretching not only feels good when you wake up, but it also does good. Sleeping in the same position overnight can result in stiffness due to lack of movement. Blood pressure and heart rate also drop and rest during this time, which means that you need to do more than just open your eyes in order to wake the body up every morning. The purpose of stretching is to alert the brain to the fact you are awake. The brain then sends signals to the muscles, alerting them to also ‘wake up’. Stretching helps to get the blood flowing again throughout the body, increases energy levels and reduces the risk of injury while you are awake and active. More energy at the start of your day means less stress and increased productivity.

6 MORNING YOGA POSTURES TO IMPROVE YOUR DAY, EVERY DAY: to stack your hands underneath your forehead. • BREATHE - Take a slow, full breath in through your nose and notice the back of the chest expand whilst the ribs widen. As you exhale through the nose, see if you can sink the buttocks back down toward the heels. Feel the spine gently relax over the thighs. • Stay here for 5-10 breaths, or however long feels good for you.

We spoke to Vanessa Morton at ‘The Yoga Space’ in Pegeia for some expert guidance on her most recommended stretching exercises (or yoga postures). We also discussed the health benefits and contraindications of each.

1. CHILD’S POSE Asana1 : Balasana

2. CAT & COW

The Child’s Pose is a calming and centering yoga posture which encourages the relaxation response, stretches the quads and lengthens the lower body. Anyone suffering from knee problems, frail knees or arthritis are best to avoid this posture.

Asana2: Bidalasana

• From kneeling, bring the big toes to touch and take the knees slightly wider than a hip’s distance apart. • Release the hips towards the heels and soften the groin. • Reach the arms out in front, a good shoulder distance apart. If the shoulders are stiff, it is ok to go wider apart. Explore and see what feels right for you. • Lengthen the sides of the body from the outer hip to the outer wrist. • Try to keep the forearms lifting away from the floor. Arms straight. • Spread the fingers and root the entire circumference of the palm into the earth and rebound up through the inner upper arms. • If you feel tension in your neck, it may feel more comfortable

70

September 2019

The Cat and Cow posture increases circulation in the back and shoulder muscles. It helps you to establish an even and conscious breathing pattern and develops awareness of where the spine moves easily and where it feels restricted. Regarding the lower back, be mindful not to overarch and keep the navel to the spine. Regarding the neck, try not to extend through the chin; lead with the chest. If the wrists are sensitive, try coming on to the fist of the hand instead. Knees can be supported with a blanket. • From a Table Top Position, bring the hands underneath the shoulders and the knees underneath the hips. Straighten the arms and line the creases of the wrists so they are parallel to the top edge of your yoga mat. • INHALE Cow Stretch. • Reach the chest forward, press the shoulder blades into the chest and draw the shoulders back away from the ears. • Arch the back, lengthen from the pubic bone to the sternum (chest) and distribute the stretch evenly along the entire length of the spine. Spread the collar bones wide. (Avoid

overarching the lower back) • EXHALE Cat Stretch. • Round the back completely from the tailbone all the way to the crown of the head and spread across the shoulder blades, flexing the spine. • Keep drawing the navel to the spine.

bent and the heels lifted. It’s more important to keep the hips high and the spine straight than to get the soles of the feet to the ground. • Relax the eyes. • BREATHE – Take deep breaths, drawing the navel to the spine on exhalation.

• BREATHE - One breath, one movement. • Take several rounds of Cat and Cow, or more if it feels good.

4. STANDING FORWARD BEND Asana4 : Uttanasana This yoga posture stretches the hamstrings and inner thigh muscles. This is the perfect position for lowering blood pressure and has a cooling and calming effect on the brain. This exercise is not recommended to anyone suffering from disc disease or disc herniation. Also, avoid this if you have a history of reflux, hiatal hernia, glaucoma or detached retina. • From the Downward Facing Dog, walk your feet toward the hands and let the upper body hang. • Have your feet hip-distance apart and root down the four corners of the feet. • Hinge from your hips rather than from the waist.

3. DOWNWARD FACING DOG Asana3 : Adho Mukha Svanasana This posture will come with practice, patience and discipline. It increases the range of motion in the shoulders and strengthens the upper body whilst stretching the hamstrings and calves. Props and/or alternatives can be used for this posture. Avoid this posture if you have high or low blood pressure, history of a stroke, glaucoma or detached retina.

• The neck, head and eyes are relaxed, and the knees bent to start with. If there’s no tension in your lower back, you can slowly start to straighten your legs. • As you inhale, find length through the spine, exhale and the head moves slowly towards the feet. • 10 breaths here and you’ll feel a foot taller.

• Take the palms a little wider than shoulder width and the wrists parallel to the front edge of the yoga mat. Tuck the toes and lift the hips into the air. • Move the chest back toward the thighs and relax the head - arms straight! Inversion. • Roll the shoulders away from the ears. • Press the floor away with your hands to lengthen the arms and back up. • Keep the neck in line with the spine. • If the hamstrings (back of the legs) are tight, keep the knees

HAIR & BEAUTY IN STYLE SKINCARE WITH BEVERLEY SHAW

‘PRESS GENTLY & PUSH THE MOISTURISER IN’ Beverley Shaw has worked for over 40 years in the beauty industry with some of the world’s leading brands including Clarins, Christian Dior and Giorgio Beverly Hills. She also spent 13 years working and training staff for La Prairie and will now be sharing her top secrets with us – in style. In this month’s edition of Cyprus in Style Magazine, Beverley discusses Skincare.

TOP SKINCARE TIP: Most people apply moisturiser to the skin in the wrong way. Pressing it in deep, circular motions and being rough with the skin is not the best way to get the most out of your moisturiser. Try and avoid causing friction on the face and always apply moisturiser with a spatula. Apply one dab to each of the five areas of the face including chin, both cheeks, forehead and nose. Now gently press and spread evenly onto the skin. The tip here being to press gently and push it in. DO NOT RUB MOISTURISER INTO THE SKIN.

TREATMENT OF THE MONTH COOLIFTING by Protocol Beauty

Coolifting is a revolutionary new procedure endorsed by Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton, designed to reduce and prevent wrinkles from developing in the skin. Mary McNicol is a beauty therapist and now offers this treatment in her salon, Protocol Beauty Salon, in Chloraka.

neck and face massage. The skin is then cooled down with an ice-ball massage before a mixture of carbon dioxide and hyaluronic acid is sprayed onto the skin with a spray gun. The combination of the two ingredients applied together ensures the hyaluronic acid is absorbed more effectively into the skin than if it was just applied topically. You may feel a slight tingling sensation whilst it is being sprayed, but it is not painful. Mary is incredibly friendly and is a mine of information on anti-ageing. After the initial first treatment, she advises a course of 5 treatments followed by a maintenance treatment once a month.

“Certainly, based on the comments made by my friends about my skin looking younger and glowing, I am going to complete the course.”

HOW DOES IT WORK? It is important to Mary that you are relaxed throughout the Coolifting process and so she begins with a cleansing facial, For further information or for appointment availability please call Mary direct on 96 766 213.
