Focusing on Student Impact

Supporting students through scholarships, emergency assistance, and funding of Cypress College programs. Learn

Maximizing impact through a gift funding the Greatest Need

Students at Cypress College experience various challenges affecting their academic success. They often suffer from food insecurity, unexpected unemployment, child care and elder care hardships, homelessness, mental health issues, and many other barriers to their success. Sometimes students simply need funds to purchase a book or even diapers. Oftentimes our most successful students need a little help just to stay in school and remove the everyday stressors that prevent them from continuing their college journey.

A gift to the Foundation’s Greatest Need Program is the most impactful way to provide flexibility when supporting students’ everyday necessities. Funds often offer Emergency Assistance in the form of grants or loans and fill the gap for student scholarships helping students who might not otherwise receive an award.

Making a lifetime impact through a Cypress College Foundation Legacy Society Endowment

Your gift will ensure that students will receive scholarship awards in perpetuity, recognizing your commitment to the college beyond your lifetime.

Your Legacy Society Endowment will grow through the Foundation investment portfolio with earnings used to support students through scholarships or any other pre-determined programmatic purpose. You can add to the endowment each year, further growing its impact on students. When you provide scholarships for students, they not only receive the monetary support, but also are further encouraged through the knowledge that someone believes in them and their success. Donors and scholarship recipients also benefit from the Scholarship Awards Ceremony. You and your student recipient will both be recognized and have the opportunity to meet and discuss the impact of the scholarship.

Cypress College: 2023 Aspen Prize Top 150 U.S. Community College

Cypress College–the beautiful, thriving campus that you see today – had modest beginnings in 1966. On September 12, most of the initial student body of 1,200 stood around the flagpole with a barely dry concrete footing for the first flag raising, complete with a Marine color guard and several dignitaries present.

The new community college campus was dubbed the “Instant Campus” by Newsweek Magazine because of the mere 74 days that intervened between the digging of the first shovelful of dirt and the beginning of classes. Indeed, the main electrical transformer for the classrooms was turned on just hours before the first class sessions began. The buildings were all temporary modular constructions, though some of these “temporary” buildings continued in service for over 40 years!

The first students to apply at Cypress College were an intrepid, pioneering group, for when they applied, there was no campus, only a few apartments and houses converted to administrative offices and a place to register students. But register they did, and the college’s first semester started on schedule with students taking classes with a bare-bones curriculum. After the first year, 25 transfers to the college became its first graduates.

Cypress College has since grown into the beautiful 112-acre campus that it is today, one of the most attractive campuses in the state and nation. It was ranked the #1 community college in California by Niche.com, a well-respected school search platform, in both 2018 and 2020. For two years in a row, in 2021 and 2022, Cypress College was named an Equity Champion of Higher Education for Latinx Students. Cypress College was also honored as a is correct] 2023 Aspen Prize Top 150 U.S. Community College.

Today, approximately 16,000 students attend Cypress College each semester, taking courses that range from advanced calculus to cybersecurity, nursing, aviation and travel careers, and geographic information systems. The college now offers 174 career-training programs, associate degrees in 98 areas of study, and 56 transfer degrees. Since 2017, Cypress College has also offered a Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service on campus, one of only 15 bachelor’s degree programs in any field offered at a California community college.

Cypress College students have gone on to succeed academically at four-year institutions across the nation, where Cypress College transfers consistently do as well as, or better than, their peers who began their education at the four-year school.

The college’s Career Technical Education programs are also premier, with several ranked among the best in the nation. The preponderance of respondents to a 2020 survey of Cypress College CTE students reported improved employment success because of their education at the college. They noted a 61 percent increase in hourly wages after completing their coursework —exceeding the 56 percent average statewide increase—and 93 percent of them voiced satisfaction with their Cypress College experience.

At Cypress College we invest in the success of our students. Buen Cypress! We Take This Journey Together.

Americana Awards: A Brief History

Americana’s Origin

A letter sent 50 years ago to Cypress College from then-president Gerald Ford encouraging organizations to pay tribute to the upcoming 1976 Bicentennial was the impetus for what has become the college’s signature event as well as an Orange County tradition. Based on this letter, Marion “Stoney” Stoneking, then community services director, along with associates Kaleta Brown, theater instructor, and Don Cantrell, public information officer, conceived of a “Community and Americana Awards night,” the purpose of which would be to recognize people, “the sum and substance of America.”

Honorees

Stoney met with the mayors of each of the college’s seven (now eight) service cities and asked each to identify someone who had made “contributions of service” to their city. The people the mayors selected became the Citizens of the Year. (Today, each of the eight cities has a designated committee that selects an honoree from nominations received from the entire community.)

For the first nine years, seven well-known people in various categories (entertainment, business, sports, the arts, the media, etc.) were given the Americana Award. One of these seven honorees also provided the evening’s entertainment. These honorees included Ray Bolger, Edgar Bergen and Ella Mae Morse. Other well-known honorees with a more local connection were: Marion Knott, Mickey Mouse, Carl Karcher, Buddy Ebsen, Dr. Sammy Lee, Cypress alumna Geri Jewell, Florence Arnold, and the Sons of the Pioneers. Since 1985 a Man and/or Woman of the Year has been chosen from numerous nominations. Among those honored have been: Tommy Lasorda, Irv Pickler, Frank Garcia, Bill Medley, Bruno Serato, and Trevor Hoffman, Baseball Hall of Fame inductee.

The Evening

From 1976-1984, the event was held on campus. The first Americana evening started with a dinner prepared by the faculty and students in the Culinary Arts program. The dinner was held in the Band Room although in subsequent years it moved to the Culinary Arts Dining Room, which is now the Art Gallery.

Following dinner, the awards ceremony and entertainment were scheduled. Since the theater had not yet been completed, the show that first night, with Ray Bolger performing, was held in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. A year later, the program moved to the theater and was held there every year until it was moved off campus. The event was well received by the community, and the theater was generally full. The awards were given out by Stoney and the college president. At one point, the mayors asked if they could give out the awards, but Stoney said no because he didn’t want the event to become political.

The expenses for the program were paid by the community service tax that colleges were allowed to collect at the time. However, when Prop. 13 was passed, that money was no longer available, which is why Jack Scott, then president, saw the opportunity to raise funds, and the current format was established. The event was moved off campus and was held at the Disneyland Resort from 1985-2023.

In 2005, as the 30th anniversary of the Americana Awards was being celebrated, an Emeritus program was implemented, as over 200 past honorees were recognized and presented with bronze medallions attached to red, white and blue ribbons. Since then, each year’s honorees receive their own medallions.

The on-campus event drew more than 600 attendees to the campus theater. The 200 who attended the dinner prior to the awards and entertainment paid $10 for a dinner of beef stroganoff served over noodles. Of course, today’s event brings 600 together for slightly more than $10 for a four-course dinner in a spectacular setting, the proceeds of which support the work of the Cypress College Foundation. Each year the Foundation provides student scholarships, student emergency assistance, student book loans, and faculty grants among other programs.

The Closing

Stoney had seen a video of Frank Sinatra singing “The House I Live In (That’s America to Me),” and he thought the ideas expressed in the lyrics fit the theme of Americana perfectly, so each year he ended the program by reading the lyrics of that song.

He particularly emphasized the last two lines—“But especially the people/That’s America to me”—because in his mind, that’s what Americana was all about: the importance of people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others.

For 49 years, since that first Americana in 1976, Cypress College has continued to recognize outstanding community volunteers. We sincerely thank you for helping us celebrate these citizens and for assisting us in raising millions of dollars in support of Cypress College students.

Together

Message from the Executive Director

Welcome to Americana – This is an important community event that we have celebrated for 49 years. Thank you for joining us to honor our Citizens of the Year and Person of the Year. We are also proud to showcase our incredible students. They pursue their education with unwavering strength and persistence against tremendous odds.

Cypress College enrollment is its highest since the pandemic which means students need our help more than ever. Cypress students continue to endure homelessness, food insecurity, medical issues, and the difficulties of caring for their children and other loved ones. Despite these challenges, our students are succeeding because of their fortitude and the Cypress College family of employees, community supporters, and you – our donors.

The Cypress College Foundation, led by your support, plays a pivotal role in the success of our students. As we celebrate our honorees and enjoy our meal during the Americana Awards, please help our students through your continued generosity and commitment.

Enjoy and thank you!

Message From the Cypress College President

Thank you for joining us to honor our Citizens and Person of the Year. By participating in the Americana Awards Gala this evening, you are also supporting the critical work of Cypress College, including providing financial assistance to our students. Community colleges play a unique role by ensuring that anyone who desires a higher education has the opportunity to enroll.

Your financial contributions allow the Foundation to support our students’ journeys through scholarships, emergency assistance, and funding of other important programs. While these resources may seem simple, you will hear from our students and others tonight just how vital they are to successfully completing an associate degree, university transfer, and/or career certification. In short, your support may well provide a lifeline to help someone continue their education.

Like community colleges themselves, the Americana Awards are a unique and special event that allows the college to give back to the communities we serve while providing financial support to our most-deserving and most-needy students. Cypress College is your community college, and the impact we make together is seen in the success of our students.

The focus of the Americana Awards Gala is to recognize and reward greatness in our community. It is my privilege to recognize the inspiring contributions made by each of our honorees this evening. This group represents the quiet heroes among us. They are people who roll up their sleeves and work to ensure their communities are better today than they were yesterday. Through generosity, ingenuity, hard work, and commitment, each has contributed in ways that leave a lasting impact on their community. It is indeed an honor to celebrate their contributions in this beautiful new venue this evening.

Thank you for being part of this special night. Your support of our honorees lauds the spirit of volunteerism and your generosity in support of Cypress College truly makes a difference. So, on behalf of our students, I offer my sincere

Person of the Year

A classically trained musician, a jazz pianist, a successful business owner, a talented designer, an avid outdoorsperson, a generous philanthropist, a loyal and supportive friend, a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother—the 2024 Americana Person of the Year is all these things, and more.

Music has been Bobbie Stovall’s defining passion all her life. She started playing piano by ear before she was two years old, just from listening to the radio, and at eight she learned that she had perfect pitch. When she was 13 years old, she was studying classical music at the Stephen Balogh Conservatory in Seattle. But she also had a love for jazz, so her mother arranged for her to have private lessons with well-known jazz musician Gaylord Jones. As his protégé, she became quite well known in the Seattle area and was even interviewed on the local television station.

Eventually the family moved to Arizona, and later Bobbie continued her musical education at Arizona State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in music. While the piano is her primary instrument, during college she expanded her repertoire to include the harpsichord. In college, she tuned these instruments and gave her senior concert on a 2-manual harpsichord.

Playing the piano has been one of her favorite activities all her life. She hopes to bring joy to those who listen to her, helping them feel the inner peace that music gives her. She continues to perform to this day, having become a guest artist at the GEM Theater in Garden Grove 20 years ago. Her most recent concert at the theater—”Bobbie’s Lounge: Bobbie and Friends at the GEM”—was held in January 2024, and, as has been true for her many other shows there, was a great success.

Her business experience has been as the co-owner, with her husband, Jim, of the Best Western Stovall’s Hotels. The company includes four different hotels, all located close to Disneyland, which were built in the mid-1960’s. As a contractor, Jim also built many other hotels in the area, providing a “home away from home” for the thousands of people who have enjoyed visiting Disneyland and Southern California over the years. Bobbie and Jim’s business was a large and integral part of the rapidly developing Anaheim resort area.

As Jim looked for other properties to develop, he came upon the historic old home that is currently The Anaheim White House restaurant. Built in 1909 and now a national historical landmark, by 1981 the building needed significant renovation, so Jim’s original plan was to level the property and build condominiums in its place.

Americana 2024 14
Bobbie Stovall

However, Bobbie intervened, saying, “The building is too beautiful to tear down. Instead, we could fashion it after the White House in Washington, D.C.” Jim reconstructed the building, and then Bobbie and her sister decorated it, making it into a themed restaurant.

In 1987, Chef Bruno Serato (Anaheim’s 2003 Americana Citizen of the Year and the 2012 Americana Man of the Year) purchased the restaurant from the Stovalls, turning it into a highly regarded Northern Italian steak house.

Given Bobbie’s background as a musician and designer, her petite size, and her always elegant appearance, it is somewhat surprising to learn that she hunts dove, pheasant, and duck with sporting dogs. She also golfs and skis, and is particularly fond of deep sea and stream fishing. In fact, one of the biggest thrills of her life was catching a 50-pound salmon on Oregon’s Rogue River during a 65-mile float trip. It was Jim who introduced Bobbie to these activities, opening up a new world to someone whose main interest had always been music.

Having a successful business, Bobbie and Jim, who unfortunately passed away in early 2023, were inspired to share their good fortune with those in need. Bobbie was a member of the Assistance League in the city of Orange and of the Amigos del San Jose, St. Joseph Hospital, Orange. Since 1999, she has supported U-Turn For Christ in Hemet, a Christian residential rehabilitation center for those struggling with addiction.

Inspired by one of the founders, Bobbie and Jim have been long-time supporters of the Speech and Language Development Center, a special needs school for children as young as six months and up to age 21. The Center recognized their generosity by dedicating the Speech and Language Development Center Communication Building to James and Barbara Stovall.

Another favorite recipient of their generosity is Caterina’s Club, named after Bruno Serato’s mother, who once insisted Bruno cook some pasta for a little boy she saw eating potato chips because his parents couldn’t afford a proper dinner. This nonprofit feeds over 25,000 children a week and has expanded to include a housing program that helps families move from motels to apartments or condominiums.

Jim and Bobbie’s outstanding support was recognized with an award at the Caterina’s Club’s 13th annual Red Carpet Gala.

Americana 2024 15

Those who are fortunate enough to call Bobbie a friend benefit greatly from her caring and giving spirit. She is kind and generous, always thinking of others and interested in what is going on in their lives. She has a warm and engaging manner, while listening carefully to what is being said. Her idea of a perfect day includes having a stimulating conversation with family or friends.

But no description of Bobbie would be complete without describing the strong and supportive relationship she and Jim shared. Bobbie describes Jim as an inspiration to her, encouraging her commitment to music while also finding ways to help her learn more about the outdoor world. He was patient and kind, consistently giving generously to those who were less fortunate.

When Bobbie first learned about the One More Productions/GEM Theater, Jim was quick to say, “Let’s go check it out.” As they learned more about the important work the theater was doing, they were both happy to support this community theater that truly is a “gem.” Jim was Bobbie’s biggest fan at her performances over the years.

Together they enjoyed ski trips, golf, fishing, and hunting, as well as traveling to many different places all over the world. Spending time at their cabin in Big Bear, especially over the 4th of July holiday, was always a highlight of their year. Family time with their two children—Tina Stovall Luis and Scott Stovall—and four grandchildren—CJ, Jimmy, and Thomas Luis, and Brooke Stovall—was always special as well.

Bobbie sums it up nicely: “I’ve been blessed with the most wonderful life imaginable” as a result of giving back to the community in so many ways. Clearly the community has been blessed as well to have her in its midst.

Congratulations, Bobbie!

City of Anaheim

Many people might claim to love their city, but how many of them would be willing to lead monthly walks for people to pick up litter? Jody Daily and Kevin Kidney are those rare individuals who do just that.

For a number of years Kevin has picked up trash on his walks throughout the city. But it was not until Kevin and Jody went to Japan and saw groups of people in green vests removing litter from neighborhoods that they realized there was a model they could use to formalize this activity.

Green Bird Anaheim, with team leaders Kevin and Jody, is part of an international volunteer organization, started in Tokyo in 2003, that removes litter from streets. The organization provides green vests, emblazoned with the Green Bird logo, “grabbers,” gloves, and anything else that is needed. Jody and Kevin organize a monthly walk, which usually draws 40-50 people who spend 1-2 hours picking up trash. The Anaheim group was the first in the United States; now there are affiliates in Costa Mesa, San Francisco, Boston, and Denver.

Of course, at the same time that people are picking up litter, they are also getting acquainted with fellow residents, so not only are Kevin and Jody helping clean the city but they are also engaged in community-building. Local businesses are now part of the effort, often offering free or discounted products to groups who remove the trash from a nearby area.

This same desire to improve their community led to Jody and Kevin’s involvement in the Anaheim Fall Festival and Halloween Parade, which celebrated its centennial in 2023. As professional artists who have designed products and parades for Disney properties all over the world, the couple has used their skills and talents to inject new life into the festival and parade, both of which had been declining in volunteer participation.

Jody has been the president of the nonprofit Anaheim Fall Festival for seven years, and he and Kevin spend countless hours helping with float design, obtaining sponsorships, soliciting and reviewing applications for participation, and organizing the many different activities involved in an event of this size. The festival and parade attract thousands of people; the parade has even been compared to the Rose Parade in terms of how much fun people have when they attend.

The Anaheim Historical Society has also benefited from Kevin and Jody’s participation. They have both been board members and at different times have been elected vice president of the organization.

Americana 2024 18
Jody Daily & Kevin Kidney

Being part of the Historical Society fits with Kevin and Jody’s interest in history and in preserving historical buildings. After growing tired of the long commute from Los Angeles to Anaheim, they purchased and completely renovated a downtown historic home, originally built in 1897 by an Anaheim walnut farmer named John Rea. An historical sidenote: Katella Avenue was named after Mr. Rea’s two daughters, Kate and Ella.

The main room of their home is furnished with period antiques, including a player piano and pump organ from 1840. When musician friends visit, they all sometimes enjoy a “rowdy singalong.” Outside, Jody and Kevin designed the landscaping, which includes a dozen trees and a raised-bed vegetable garden.

Another way they have contributed to the city is by creating the Andy Anaheim character graphics that are used by the City of Anaheim on its website, newsletters, and on signage around town. Andy Anaheim itself is Anaheim’s official mascot, given to the city in the 1950’s by Walt Disney.

Kevin and Jody also volunteer their time to go to local schools to attend career fairs and participate along with other community leaders in reading to students.

After many years of working for Disney, in 2006 the couple opened their own business, the Kevin & Jody Show, Inc., through which they continue to do design work for Disney as well as other companies.

Not surprisingly, Jody and Kevin’s contributions have been recognized by various groups, including the California State Senate and the Anaheim City Council. Because of their many years of designing Disney parades, merchandise, and artwork, in 2023 they received the Disneyana Fan Club Legends Award. Their Green Bird efforts have earned them recognition from the Anaheim City Council, the California State Assembly and Senate, and the United States Congress.

Over the years they have fallen in love with Anaheim. The people in their neighborhood and all those whom they have met through their various civic activities have become their extended family. Preserving the history and traditions of the city has become very important to them, and thinking of ways to improve Anaheim has become their favorite project.

But first, there is some litter to pick up in the nearby park.

Americana 2024 19

City of Buena Park

Beth Swift says she can be asked almost any question and the answer will be “Buena Park.” Whether she is being asked where she was born, where she went to school, where she got married, where she taught, or where she served on the school district board and the city council, the answer will be “Buena Park.”

Beth’s mother was a teacher, and from a young age Beth wanted to follow in her footsteps. While other children played various games, Beth and her siblings played school. One day, while attending Buena Park High School, Beth decided that she wanted to come back and teach history at that same school—and she did, for 15 years. Later, she taught at La Habra High School, and during her career her assignments included not only history but 14 other subjects as well.

Beth was not only a teacher but also a role model. As a young teen, she had been inspired by a cousin earning his Ph.D. so later decided to pursue her Ed.D. She used her experience to inspire her students and was delighted to find they cheered her on, proudly referring to her as “Dr. Swift” after she successfully defended her dissertation.

Even though she was busy teaching and raising four young daughters, Beth decided she wanted to do more to help her community. She was elected to the Buena Park School District Governing Board, where she served for 31 years, including seven years as president. During this time she was also active in her daughters’ PTA’s and was a member of the Rotary Club of Buena Park.

One of her favorite Rotary projects was “Books and Bags for Babies,” which certainly showcased her ability to bring different entities in the city together. The Acacia Quilt Guild of Buena Park made the drawstring bags, the Buena Park Women’s Club put the drawstrings in them, the Rotary Club purchased the books, and the Buena Park school districts provided the necessary information. When the bags were finished and filled with books, they were taken to local hospitals to be presented to new parents who lived in Buena Park.

In 2010, Beth was elected to the Buena Park City Council, where she stayed until 2022, serving as mayor twice. Her responsibilities as a councilmember included representing Buena Park on the Orange County Fire Authority, the Association of California Cities, and the League of California Cities. She was particularly active with OCFA, holding a number of positions including chair and vice-chair of the board of directors.

During her years on the city council, she became known as the “education councilmember,” sponsoring several different initiatives to help students in the city. One initiative was “Buena Park Goes to College,” designed to increase the number of residents who were college graduates. This one-day event includes motivational speakers and a college fair, during which attendees learn about college opportunities.

Americana 2024 20
Elizabeth “Beth” Swift, Ed.D.

Later, she started a program to recognize recent college graduates who live in the city, and she established an Education Committee that includes superintendents of local school districts, the director of the chamber of commerce, and the mayor. It meets quarterly to discuss issues of common interest.

In addition to her elected positions, Beth has been a lifetime member of the Buena Park Historical Society, a congregant of the Neighbors and Nations Community Church, and an active participant in the Acacia Quilt Guild of Orange County.

She has received many awards for her community work, having been honored by Soroptimist International of Buena Park, Buena Park’s Woman’s Club, the Buena Park Rotary Club, and the California State Assembly.

She has also been recognized for her work as an educator: California State University Fullerton, Honored Teacher Award; Buena Park High School, Teacher of the Year; Fullerton Joint Union High School District, District Teacher of the Year; and Orange County School Boards Association, Marion Bergeson Award/Board Member of the Year. One of the things she is most proud of is having taught high school students for 21 years.

Sewing, quilting, crocheting, and embroidering are Beth’s main hobbies. She has made hundreds of dresses for special occasions, and she makes her own quilts while also finishing many of her mother’s.

She and her husband, Greg, have been married for 53 years. Sadly, in 2018, he had a debilitating stroke and is no longer able to speak or walk. However, Beth says he understands everything and “is a comfort to me.”

She takes great pride in her four daughters, two of whom are school counselors, while the other two homeschool their children. As the saying goes, “The apple didn’t fall far from the tree,” and Buena Park has certainly been the beneficiary of this family’s strong commitment to education.

Jon Peat is that unusual individual who combines the analytical skills of an MBA-holder with the kindness and compassion of a person whose “Christian faith teaches [him] to love and care for others.”

With a bachelor’s degree in business administration/ finance, later followed by an MBA, Jon spent his career with the Raytheon Company, a major U.S. defense contractor and industrial manufacturing corporation. For a good part of his time with Raytheon, Jon had responsibility for strategic planning and later for “competitive intelligence,” a process that involves the collection and analysis of information for leaders to use in making decisions.

Given his background, it is not surprising that when Jon served on the Cypress City Council, from 2014-2022, he made sure that the city used strategic planning and data analysis to drive its decision-making.

Jon is focused on his family—his wife, Bonnie (currently a member of the Cypress City Council, as well as the Cypress College 2022 Alumna of the Year), and Michael, his 31-year-old special needs son. In fact, two of Jon’s civic activities are the direct result of his commitment to Michael.

In 2001, Doug Bailey (the 2018 Cypress Americana Citizen of the Year) asked Jon and Michael to join the Challenger Baseball program that Doug was setting up. This program provides “an adaptive baseball experience for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges.” After the first season, Doug asked Jon to take over the day-to-day leadership; and now, 24 years later, Jon is heading up one of the largest special needs baseball programs in the country, with about 200 participants on 16 teams.

Not only does Challenger Baseball provide a fun and supportive environment for participants, giving them the opportunity to be successful at whatever level is possible, but it also enables others—family members, “buddies” from local high school and college baseball teams, and anyone who loves baseball—to come together to cheer on these players. This is truly community-building at its best.

For his contribution to Challenger Baseball, in 2013, Jon was given the Chuck Dubski Award, named after a man who was instrumental in establishing the Champions League of PONY Baseball. It is PONY’s highest award, given to someone who “acts, dedicates and cares for the betterment of today’s youth and serving the special needs community.”

Another similar program, Champion Ministry at SeaCoast Grace Church, is part of a national Champions Club that serves people with special needs. Jon was instrumental in starting this program at his church and continues to provide leadership and support to it.

Jon Peat

Their family’s experience with Michael has given Jon and Bonnie the opportunity to serve as advisors and resources to other families struggling with the issues involved in raising special needs children. Jon gets great satisfaction from being able to use the lessons he and Bonnie have learned to help others—an unofficial but very important part of his contributions to his community.

The Boys & Girls Club of Cypress (now the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Anaheim-Cypress) has also benefited from Jon’s experience and commitment as a board member for many years. He has received numerous awards from the Boys & Girls Club in recognition of his leadership.

Jon’s most recent foray into serving his community is his appointment in 2023 as the Head of School for the recently established elementary school at SeaCoast Grace Church. They started with a kindergarten class and will add an additional grade each year. Jon is very excited about working with young children as he meets this new challenge.

Closer to home, Jon enjoys helping Michael indulge his passion for visiting fire stations and meeting firefighters. Since their very first visit, when Michael was attracted to the station because a firefighter was outside playing the bagpipes, they have visited 121 fire stations throughout the country. It is heartwarming to hear how the firefighters have welcomed Michael, showing him their equipment, giving him coats and hats and small pieces of equipment, and even taking him for rides in their vehicles.

Peat family trips always include visits to fire stations, especially those in Hawaii, which is a favorite vacation destination for the three of them.

Jon credits Bonnie with helping him find his Christian faith, his partnership with her being “crucial” in his life. They are a team, sharing their love for Michael and their commitment to their community. It is Jon’s belief that he is “living out God’s purpose for [his] life” and therefore he is at peace with where he is, finding great satisfaction in doing what benefits others.

City of Garden Grove

Anyone who is worried about getting older should spend some time with 94-year-old Joe Hammer. Joe still drives himself wherever he wants to go, serves as the treasurer of the Garden Grove Rotary Club, regularly goes bass fishing with his two sons and grandson, and pursues his woodworking hobby, often making clocks for friends. He is active both physically and mentally, easily recalling events from many different times in his life while also enjoying the challenge of completing daily Sudoku and crossword puzzles.

One of Joe’s guiding principles is being ready for any challenge. For example, in 1950 he was a student at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA, and not doing particularly well. He felt sure that he was going to be drafted, so he decided to enlist in the Army, choosing that branch of the service because his enlistment commitment would be only three years. However, while at the recruitment station, the Air Force recruiters encouraged him to enlist in the Air Force instead of the Army because they were not meeting their enlistment quotas. Even though the Air Force required a four-year commitment, Joe allowed himself to be persuaded, figuring, “Oh, well, it’s only one more year. I can do that.”

His business career was spent primarily in the moving and storage industry. That was the industry his father worked in, too; but after Joe and his brother were both discharged from military service, they decided to start their own business rather than join their dad. They were successful for several years, but later on the two brothers decided to dissolve their partnership. Joe went on to work for various companies in moving and storage until he eventually started his own company, which ended up specializing in helping people relocate internationally.

Joe’s father had always stressed the importance of giving back to the community, and Joe’s wife, Marie, also encouraged him to get involved. Joe ended up serving on the Safety, Parks and Recreation, and Planning commissions in the city of La Mirada, where the family lived at that time. He also held leadership positions in industry organizations, such as the California Moving and Storage Association.

When the family relocated to Garden Grove, Joe joined the Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board for 17 years and chaired the group from 2007-2009. He also spent four years on the board of the Acacia Adult Day Center, and he has been a long-time member of the Garden Grove Rotary Club, which he twice served as president. Currently, he is the treasurer, a position he has held for 16 years.

One of the reasons he has participated in Rotary for so long is to support its commitment to the elimination of polio. When Joe was a young boy in Pittsburgh, PA, he had friends who had polio, so he saw firsthand what a terrible disease it is.

Americana 2024 24

For his work in these civic organizations, Joe was named the Garden Grove Chamber of Commerce Director of the Year in 2012 and 2015. In 2023 he was the City of Garden Grove Man of the Year.

Joe likes sports, especially baseball, and enjoyed coaching and holding leadership positions in the sports leagues in which his sons participated. When he served on the Parks and Recreation Commission in La Mirada, he was pleased to help with efforts to turn unused school playgrounds into baseball fields.

Joe lives by the principle that a person should act simply “because it is the right thing to do.” It was actually his older son who came up with this idea when Joe was working on a mission statement for his business. Joe’s son said, “It’s simple, dad. You do it because it’s the right thing to do.”

If Joe sees something that needs to be done, he’s willing to give it a try even if he’s not sure how to do it. As he says, “I’ll plod through it and figure it out.” He’s willing to take on challenges and see them through.

But the main thing to say about Joe is how important his wife has been to him during their 70-year marriage. Their life hasn’t always been easy, but they have had lots of adventures, and most of the time life has been good. They both firmly believe that there is nothing they can’t accomplish if they do it together. Joe says that having had Marie’s support throughout their many years together is what has made him successful in both business and life.

So, thank you, Marie, and Joe for all that you have done to help your community!

City of La Palma

Michele Steggell is a person who takes advantage of opportunities when they are presented. Whether it’s selling real estate, serving on the La Palma City Council, chairing the Orange County Fire Authority Board of Directors, or establishing the La Palma Community Foundation, Michele is willing to give it a try.

Her real estate career began in 2006 when her brother encouraged her to go to real estate school. He is a contractor and thought that they could work together if she got her license to sell real estate. At that time Michele was in the medical field, doing work that she did not find particularly interesting, so she said, “Why not?”

It was a propitious decision because as she says about selling real estate, “I love it!” She gets to meet so many great people, and she is able to maintain long-term relationships with them. Some of her clients have used her services five and six times in the 17 years she has been in business. She feels it is an honor to serve them and to have them become repeat clients.

It was Peter Kim, then mayor of La Palma, who encouraged her to run for city council. He felt that her knowledge of the city and her many connections with its residents would make her a valuable addition to the local government. Although she was inexperienced at first, she was a quick learner who never used her elected position for her own benefit. Even when she became mayor (twice), she felt she was still the same person, just trying to make La Palma a place that provided effective services to its citizens.

As part of her council responsibilities, she was appointed as the La Palma representative to the Orange County Fire Authority. In this position she found many helpful mentors, especially Stanton Mayor Dave Shawver, and eventually came to love being part of this organization. She became the chair of the Human Resources Committee and then in 2022 served as the chair of the OCFA Board of Directors.

Her responsibilities as mayor included attending events in other cities. One such event was a police appreciation program for the Cypress Police Department, at which a video about the national “Every 15 Minutes” program was shown. (“Every 15 Minutes” is a program for high school students that discourages drunk driving.)

Michele recognized the power of such a program and decided that La Palma’s students needed to have one as well. She enlisted the help of the La Palma police chief, and soon she was able to establish the La Palma Community Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds to pay for “Every 15 Minutes” presentations at Kennedy High School.

Americana 2024 26
Michele Steggell

Since its founding, Michele has been the president of the Foundation, and her commitment to it is so strong that she sees it as something she will do for a long time. In addition to funding “Every 15 Minutes,” the Foundation supports the School Resource Officer program (through a grant from the Orange County Public Safety Collaborative), the “Police Interaction with Youth” program at the elementary schools, scholarships, Christmas gifts for disadvantaged students, bingo for seniors, hot dogs in the park with firefighters, and other programs and services. Funds are raised primarily by a very popular annual themed party that includes music and dancing.

On the family front Michele has four nephews and three great-nieces and nephews. She enjoys watching her brother and sister-in-law being grandparents and points out that, as a “great-aunt,” she finally has the title she deserves! One of her favorite family traditions, which has lasted for more than 50 years, is for the whole family to celebrate Christmas Eve at the Northwoods Inn in nearby La Mirada.

To relax, Michele enjoys water-related activities. She visits local beaches, goes boating on Lake Mead, and especially liked visiting the island of Aruba with its many white sand beaches.

Being a Christian is an important part of Michele’s life. She has been a member of Cottonwood Church in Los Alamitos for 20 years. As befitting someone with her strong Christian beliefs, her favorite book is the Bible.

Through her work on the La Palma City Council and the Community Foundation, as well as her many years of providing real estate services, Michele has made La Palma a better place to live for all its residents.

The good news for La Palma is that she plans to continue her commitment for many years to come.

City of Los Alamitos/Rossmoor

Shelli Appling is part of a second generation of honorees from that city, proving that a desire to “give back” can run deep in families. Dave Appling, Shelli’s father-in-law, was the Los Alamitos Americana Citizen of the Year in 1999. Marilynn Poe, who is like a second mother to Shelli, was honored in 2007; and Marilynn’s son, Dr. William Poe, was honored in 2020. Now it is Shelli’s turn to be recognized for her long list of contributions to her community.

While her two sons were growing up, Shelli’s volunteer work focused on their activities. She served on the board of Los Alamitos AYSO (youth soccer), volunteered for the PTA at Los Alamitos Elementary and Lee Elementary schools, and helped with Los Alamitos Jr. Baseball, working the snack shack and scorekeeping or being team mom for every team her husband coached and her sons played on.

At Los Alamitos High School, she was a member of both the Football Boosters and Basketball Boosters clubs, designing and selling Griffin (the high school’s mascot) gear at home games.

By joining the board of the Los Alamitos Youth Center, a nonprofit that has always been close to her heart, she continued to help the youth in the city. She worked Saturday night bingo games and spent many December weekends selling Christmas trees and her own personally decorated wreaths—two major fundraisers for the Center.

Shelli is currently serving on the board of the Los Alamitos Museum Association, which she joined in 2000. She helps organize events and fundraisers for the museum, and she also volunteers her time and computer skills to the Los Alamitos Football Foundation and the Finest Annual Trout Invitational Tournament, which her father-in-law started 40 years ago. Proceeds from the tournament are used to restock fish in Lake Crowley, where the tournament takes place, as well as to support cancer research, the Los Alamitos Museum, and Ronald McDonald House.

Shelli and her husband, Donny, are employed by Appling Insurance Services, which Donny’s father started many years ago. It is currently owned by Strategic Insurance Partners, but the company remains a very important part of the Los Alamitos business community, earning the honor of being named Business of the Month by the Los Alamitos Chamber of Commerce in 2023.

Shelli really enjoys helping out wherever she can in Los Alamitos, but her greatest love and highest priority is her family. Her two sons, both of whom earned associate degrees at Cypress College, are successful businesspeople, one in Los Alamitos and the other in Tennessee. Her granddaughter, eight-and-a-half-year-old Allie, brings Shelli and Donny great joy.

Christmases are always celebrated with the whole family, as well as the Strohmyer family. (Johnnie Strohmyer was the 1991 Cypress Americana Citizen of the Year.) Adults draw names

and then have to make a gift for that person for the following Christmas. Shelli, as a quilter and expert craftsperson, finds it rather easy to come up with gifts, but she and Donny once made a bunk bed for a family member.

The Applings are big sports fans. They love college sports like basketball and football, as well as pro baseball, football, and hockey. Shelli is a huge Dodger fan, thanks primarily to her grandfather but also her parents.

For 35 years the entire family has enjoyed an annual houseboat trip on Lake Powell, and of course during the year there are many birthdays and other occasions that bring them all together.

A surprising fact about Shelli is that for a year she and several friends played ice hockey for the Lady Kings in Los Angeles. She even got to play at Staples Center--although her games were usually at midnight--and she once scored a goal. Donny framed the puck she used to make the goal.

Another “claim to fame” that Shelli has is she can walk on stilts. Her grandfather made them for her when she was 10, and even though that was a few years ago, she is quite confident that she could still walk around the block on them today.

Shelli is highly motivated to help all the various organizations in Los Alamitos, believing that if she can help just a little, she will feel like a better person and have a greater purpose in life. She is known as someone who will help in any way she can, which is why so many people and nonprofits in town turn to her when a need arises. She has been volunteering since she was 25 years old, and fortunately for Los Alamitos, she shows no signs of slowing down!

City of Seal Beach

A loving couple for 55 years, Greg and Kathy Fellers met in 1964 as they both waited to board a bus to take them to a freshman orientation camp at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. Their friendship turned into a deep love during their college years, and they married the summer after graduation.

Kathy worked as an elementary school teacher while Greg attended the University of California, Davis, earning his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1972. He went on to own several veterinary medical practices in Northern California, specializing in large animals and earning the right to introduce himself as “a horse doctor.”

He also found ways to contribute to his community, serving on the Loomis City Council for several years, including a term as mayor.

Kathy kept busy with her teaching, transitioning into a 10-year stint as a computer teacher, even though she had never even attended a computer class. Fortunately, by that time, her two sons were old enough to know about computers, so they could help her.

Following their retirement in 2008, the couple decided to return to Southern California, where they were both raised. As they visited different towns along the coast, they were particularly impressed by the First United Methodist Church of Seal Beach. It was small, wellestablished, with meaningful sermons. The location was also close to where their sons and four grandchildren live. The decision was made—they would spend their retirement years in Seal Beach.

Being blessed with time and good health, they decided to contribute to the community’s “vibrancy” in any way they could.

Greg has held a number of leadership positions at their church, including service on the Board of Trustees, where he was president for five years; the chair of the Administrative Council; and the Lay Leader. Kathy has been active in the United Methodist Women organization, which she served as secretary and as its long-time president (2011 to the present). She has been the United Methodist Church Administrative Council secretary since 2012, and she and Greg both sing in the church choir.

Americana 2024 30
Greg & Kathy Fellers

Also church related, but on a broader scale, Greg has served as a leader on four teams that are part of the California-Pacific United Methodist Church Disaster Response Task Force. These teams have gone into areas hard hit by a disaster to help survivors in whatever way possible.

Greg has also served on the Save Our Beach board of directors; the Seal Beach Police Foundation board of directors; as the Homeless Awareness Liaison with Seal Beach churches and the police department; and a Habitat for Humanity volunteer on build sites in California, Mississippi, and Romania. He has also been a member of this organization’s Long Beach Faith Coalition Steering Committee.

Kathy’s significant focus in the community is the LOTE (Ladies of the Evening) service club, so named because the members meet at night rather than during the day when many women’s clubs meet. LOTE members help with various Seal Beach projects, including the car show and the kite festival. Their baked goods are much appreciated by the police and fire volunteers. A very special project is raising funds to purchase teddy bears for lifeguards to give to children who are lost or scared at the beach.

Kathy has served as the LOTE historian, newsletter editor, and the LOTE representative to the Seal Beach Police Foundation homeless backpack program. Like Greg, she has been a member of the Save Our Beach board and helped with the Orange County point-in-time homeless count.

Recognition of their contributions has come from various organizations. Kathy earned the United Women in Faith Special Recognition Award in 2022. Greg was named the Outstanding Alumnus of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and he was honored with the North American Trail Ride Conference Jim Menefee Lifetime Achievement Award.

Both Greg and Kathy were thrilled to be the grand marshals of the 2019 Seal Beach Christmas Parade, an honor bestowed on people who contribute significantly to the community.

Their busy lives include plenty of physical activity: regular bike rides with friends, pickleball, snow skiing, and beach activities such as swimming. In 2000 Kathy added aerobics teacher to her resumé, and while she no longer teaches it, she continues to participate in aerobic dancing and Jazzercise.

While both Greg and Kathy have their separate activities, they stress that they work together. One of them may take the lead in a particular project, but the other one also contributes in whatever way possible. As Kathy says, “Greg and I do encourage, support and accomplish our goals as a TEAM that has prospered well for 55 years.”

And may their partnership continue for many years to come.

City of Stanton

“I believe it is easier to mentor a child than to rehabilitate an adult,” says Rigoberto Ramirez. When people ask Rigo, a long-time professional in the financial industry, “What is the best investment?” he pulls them in close and spells it out for them: “K.I.D.S.”

Rigo believes that we need to invest in kids now more than ever. They need role models and a community that is committed to them—and that is where Rigo focuses his civic involvement.

For over a decade, Rigo has been a speaker in the Youth Motivation Task Force (YMTF), a partnership of local companies, community volunteers, and schools, the purpose of which is to increase high school graduation rates and encourage continued higher education.

During his visits to classrooms, Rigo shares his personal story with the students—how his parents owned a strawberry business on the westside of Long Beach for 53 years; how he got a first-hand education on how to grow berries and cultivate relationships with the customers; how his father always told children when they stopped by the strawberry stand for free samples on their way home from school, “Invest in yourselves by learning as much as you can in school, read as many books as possible, and stretch your imagination.”

Using his background in the financial services profession, Rigo talks “dollars and cents” to the students in classes he visits: how much money will they make in certain jobs; how much of that money will go to pay taxes, then housing, food, transportation; how borrowing for college can become an overwhelming debt, etc. It is exciting when he sees the students beginning to understand this vitally important information. In fact, Rigo’s idea of a perfect day is when he sees that he has made a difference in a person’s life.

Servite High School is also the beneficiary of Rigo’s commitment to youth. He is in his second term on the school’s board of directors and does all he can to support their goal of creating “faith-filled leaders,” men who can lead themselves, their families, and their professions based on a life of Christian values.

Other ways he helps kids in his community include the following: serving as a judge for the Lions Club International Student Speaker Contest Regional Finals; participating (with his son, Nicholas) in the Santa Siren annual toy giveaway in five different Stanton neighborhoods; donating to the City of Stanton Halloween festival to purchase pumpkins, which reminds Rigo that he and his father used to plant and then donate pumpkins to the event; and supporting the fundraising efforts of the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton and the food drives of the Buena Parkbased Giving Children Hope organization.

Americana 2024 32
Rigoberto Ramirez

Rigo was elected to two terms on the Stanton City Council, where he also served as mayor. He was instrumental in establishing the Talk on the Block program, through which elected officials and city staff visit different neighborhoods in the city to listen to residents’ ideas on how to improve life in Stanton. As part of his focus on helping kids, Rigo, with the support of his fellow councilmembers, also instituted a Youth in Government Day, when local high school students spend a day at city hall and get hands-on experience running a city. Stanton Jr. Council was also established to provide a group of high school students the opportunity to meet regularly and participate in city government.

He loves baseball, having played in an adult baseball league until he was 45. Then, as would be expected, he turned his attention to coaching. He has coached and umpired youth baseball throughout the local area.

He also has a passion for classic Chevrolets. His father and he used to collect first-generation Camaros. They would fix up the cars and then sell them, thoroughly enjoying the time they spent together on this hobby. Rigo and his son have continued this tradition. Once a month they join other classic car fans to cruise from Costa Mesa to Long Beach. Rigo’s current “ride” is a 1967 Camaro RS/SS convertible.

Clearly Rigo’s father was an influential figure in his life. Much of the motivation for Rigo’s civic involvement was inspired by his father telling him, “A business has an obligation to be a good contributor to the community in which it operates.” An unusual activity that he and his dad shared was going to Guadalajara, Mexico, to herd cattle that his parents owned.

From “cowpoke,” to classic car collector, to community leader, Rigo Ramirez undoubtedly has many perfect days because he has certainly made a difference in the lives of countless numbers of people. Thank you, Rigo!

Citizens of the Year

From the first Americana Awards in 1976, Seal Beach was included with the neighboring areas of Los Alamitos and Rossmoor. In 2004, it was determined that residents of Seal Beach should be recognized separately. Since that time, there have been 20 Citizens of the Year from Seal Beach who were chosen by a committee of that city’s residents and honored at the Americana Awards

Sabrina Tosti

Baking and Pastry Arts, 2023

Having grown up baking with her grandmother, it is just something that’s always been in Sabrina Tosti’s life. She knew she enjoyed baking birthday cakes for family and making desserts for different holidays, so after earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Cal State Fullerton, she decided to earn a degree in baking and pastry arts at Cypress College.

Sabrina, who was named the 2023 Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the CTE pathway, hopes to combine the knowledge gained in those two degrees by one day opening her own bakery. In the meantime, she looks forward to growing in her craft by first participating in a culinary internship in the Marriott Voyager program, then continuing in the hospitality industry.

Garrett Deiro Kinesiology, 2022

During his childhood, Garrett Deiro logged many more hours than most in doctors’ offices and operating rooms, having undergone four open-heart surgeries by the time he was 14 due to a congenital heart defect. He came to trust and value the care he experienced, leading to an interest in medicine as a career to become like the physicians who helped him, and to help children like him in kind.

Garrett was selected as the 2022 Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the Kinesiology pathway. He transferred to CSUF in fall 2022 and plans to pursue medical school after earning his bachelor’s degree.

Pre-Engineering, 2023

Mia came to the United States from Vietnam when she was 15 years old, ready for a challenge. It was her dream to go to college in the U.S., and she worked hard to make that dream a reality. That included joining the military and applying to four-year colleges. She achieved her goal of serving her new country, but was turned away by the colleges she contacted.

Mia pivoted and started her higher education journey at Cypress College. She selected Cypress for its wide range of classes and support services, like EOPS and the Veterans Resource Center. In 2023, Mia became the Presidential Scholar of Distinction for the SEM pathway and transferred to UCI as a chemical engineering major to further realize her dreams, sharpen her skills, and give back through service to others.

Knowing she'd need to support herself to afford college, Lia took a semester off and went to work directly out of high school, then transitioned to taking classes while working part-time. After being promoted to a full-time position, Lia found she had much less time for classes and decided something had to give. She quit that job to prioritize her education and became a part-time tutor instead, eventually working in the college's L/LRC as a tutor and Supplemental Instruction leader.

Lia's scholarly passion is genetics. She transferred to UCI in fall 2021 to study biochemistry and one day hopes to earn a doctorate and work in genetics research to help prevent the suffering caused by genetic diseases.

Alumnus of the Year

The Cypress College Foundation selected Betty Sarkis as the 2023 Alumnus of the Year. Betty was born and grew up in Tehran, Iran. As a Christian minority, after the Revolution in 1979, she was forced from her home and came to America through political asylum, arriving in San Francisco. Although she could speak Aramaic, Farsi, and French, she spoke no English.

She moved to Cypress and began her journey in 1989 at Cypress College. She started learning English as a second language and graduated in 1991. She then transferred to CSULB and completed her BA and MA in French and began teaching at CSULB as she earned her teaching credential and her first teaching position. Betty is now a high school teacher in Little Saigon where she teaches French and English Learning Development and helps immigrant students from Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Because of her life-changing experience at Cypress College, Betty has been a strong supporter and advocate of the college. She has inspired her husband, Troy Edgar, to give back to Cypress College. Together they have been actively involved since 2007 with the Cypress College Foundation providing significant support through the Americana events that provide an opportunity to students like her to get their education. In addition to her efforts, her husband was also awarded the 2022 Americana Citizen of the Year representing Los Alamitos.

Betty is grateful for her experience at Cypress College and the opportunity that was provided with so many memories and inspiration from her professors and counselors.

FORMER CYPRESS COLLEGE

In an important step to establish a lasting legacy for Cypress College students, the Foundation established the Legacy Society. Donors who commit to an endowment of $10,000 or more through a will, trust, annuity, insurance policy or outright cash, are inducted into the Legacy Society. The Foundation inducted 36 Charter Member families into the Legacy Society in 2017. Legacy Society donors include members of the community, Cypress College faculty, managers, staff, and retirees as well as Foundation Board members. Of particular interest is that five former college presidents have all committed their support to Cypress College through the Legacy Society.

To join the Legacy Society or for more information contact:

I am participating in the Cypress Legacy Society because of the transforming impact that it will have on students. Particularly important is the education this will provide for first-generation students, students from low-income families, and students deserving a second chance. My contribution and the contributions from others to the Cypress Legacy Society will provide scholarships to deserving students for many years to come.

PRESIDENTS SUPPORT LEGACY SOCIETY

Bob Simpson

Cypress College is a special place doing amazing things for students. Having been a member of the Charger family, I know the value of our mission in transforming the lives of our students. Being a Legacy donor provides the opportunity to support that mission now and into the future.

JoAnna Schilling

As President of Cypress College, it was my honor to contribute to, and support, the Legacy Society at Cypress College. When a donor gives to the Legacy Society they are making a life-changing difference in the lives of students who are beating the odds of economic, racial, and cultural barriers. While our students possess a resilience born of courage, grit, and enormous potential, the Legacy Society ensures they also have the financial support to achieve their dreams. I am proud to commit to an endowment that ensures the economic future of these amazing students, and the communities in which they live.

Margie Lewis

I’m a member of the Cypress College Legacy Society because I want to do all I can to ensure that future students will have the financial support they need to complete their degrees and certificates. By setting up an endowment through the Foundation, I know my gift will be used effectively to help students for many years to come. It’s my way of following Nelson Henderson’s quotation: “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”

Mike Kasler

Having immigrated to the United States with my family, my parents ingrained in me the importance of education. They believed education was the “equalizer” in terms of achieving one’s goals. As a youngster I didn’t always understand that, but as I grew older I did and instilled the same in my children. There is no better return on investment for our country than investing in a student’s education---the Legacy Society does that! You can become part of that investment.

ENDOWMENT GIFT OPTIONS

An endowment gift may be designated for a specific purpose. Please let us know if you wish to restrict the use of income from your gift for a specific program or purpose. You may wish to make the endowment gift in your honor, or in memory of another person. We can help you make a gift that creates a legacy of remembrance for you and your loved ones.

For additional information on endowment giving or to review information about our endowment plan, please contact us. We look forward to helping you create your legacy!

YOUR SUPPORT MAKES OUR WORK POSSIBLE

Did you know that by making a gift to our endowment, you can create a permanent source of income that will ensure the continuation of our programs far into the future? This type of meaningful gift can create a legacy for you while providing lasting support for our mission.

PLANNED GIVING BRIEF

CREATE YOUR LEGACY WITH AN ENDOWMENT GIFT

YOUR LEGACY SOCIETY ENDOWMENT GIFT WILL GROW TO BECOME A PERMANENT LEGACY OF SUPPORT FOR OUR GOOD WORK!

WHY MAKE A LEGACY SOCIETY ENDOWMENT GIFT?

An endowment gift is a gift to an established fund that is permanently invested.

When you make an endowment gift, you create a steady stream of annual income to support our good work. Your gift will be maintained in perpetuity and make a lasting, meaningful difference.

There are several ways in which you can make an endowment gift either today or as part of your estate plan.

WAYS TO MAKE AN ENDOWMENT GIFT

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY

When you transfer your cash or appreciated property (stock, CDs or real estate) to our endowment, we will agree to pay you fixed-income for life at a rate based on your age. You may benefit from a charitable deduction and a portion of your income may even be tax free.

GIFT OF CASH

You can start an endowment with a single gift of cash paid today or over time. Your Legacy Society gift will grow over time, ensuring future success for Cypress College students.

BEQUEST

A gift to our endowment made through your will or trust, may provide your estate with valuable tax savings. Your endowment bequest can be a gift of a specific asset, percentage of your estate or the residue (what's left after specific bequests are made to your family). Your endowment gift will create a permanent legacy of lasting support for our work!

When you know the secret of throwing one, a boomerang always comes back to you. In the same way, our organization has a secret you may not know. It's a charitable gift annuity.

When you fund a charitable gift annuity with us, you get cash back at high, fixed annual rates that never change.

BUILD YOUR LEGACY WITH MANY HAPPY RETURNS

OUR CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY GIVES YOU PAYMENTS EVERY YEAR FOR AS LONG AS YOU LIVE

When you fund a charitable gift annuity, we agree to send you a check each year for as long as you live, based on your funding amount and your age at the time of funding. The payment amount never changes. In addition, you may also receive:

An income tax deduction this year for part of the funding amount.

● If you fund it by transferring stock, some of your capital gains are eliminated, some spread over a number of years.

● After a lifetime of payments to you, any remaining funds automatically support our mission in your name.

Call or email us to learn what your payment rate and tax benefits will be. When you do, ask about deferred charitable gift annuities and other options that may give you greater payments and tax benefits.

Education is a step to a future of possible.

The Americana Awards began almost 50 years ago as part of our nation’s Bicentennial celebration. Its original purpose, which is still true today, was to recognize outstanding community volunteers—people doing their best, serving their communities, and sharing their talents with others. More than 400 exceptional honorees have been recognized for these very special awards.

We have partnered with the Westin Anaheim Resort to continue this tradition of excellence in a fresh and exciting new venue. The Westin Anaheim Resort, with its state-of-the-art facilities and elegant ambiance, provides the perfect backdrop for celebrating the achievements of our honorees.

Americana is the Foundation’s annual major fundraising event and has raised millions of dollars over its 48-year history. These funds support Cypress College students through scholarships, emergency assistance, and campus programs that promote student success.
