PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

BACCALAUREATE DEGREE CANDIDATES The following students are candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Funeral Service. This is the first cohort completing the baccalaureate degree at Cypress College, one of 15 community colleges in the state selected to participate in this prestigious program. Congratulations to this pioneering cohort of students.

JoAnna Schilling, Ph.D. President, Cypress College I am reminded every day of the amazing students who attend our community colleges. The commencement season brings their stories of success to the forefront more so than at any other time of the year. Our students overcome obstacles most of us will never know, and still they persevere and succeed. I am so honored to know and serve them. Our passionate staff, faculty, and managers deserve thanks for the opportunities they help create for these deserving students. Cypress College is the #1 community college in California, as named in the national 2018 Best Community College rankings. We are also a Guided Pathways college, and that means we seek to ensure that every student has a pathway toward their own individual academic goal. We describe this commitment with our motto of Buen Cypress, which means that every student is important and that We Take This Journey Together — our employees are invested in the success of our students. We find this commitment reflected in our beautiful campus environment, as well as the many exciting things taking place in our classrooms, instructional labs, performance halls, athletic fields, and student programs and pathways. Your success makes us proud. Today’s commencement ceremony follows a tradition dating back centuries. While more Americans have completed a college degree than at any other point in U.S. history, only 6.7% of the world’s population hold a college degree. Thus, commencement ceremonies are important milestones that affirm students’ search for knowledge. This is an occasion for students, faculty, staff, family members, and guests to recognize the achievement of an academic goal. For today’s graduates, you are joining the many Cypress graduates who have come before you. Be proud of this accomplishment; you will forever be part of our Cypress traditions. And to these scholars, I say: this degree or certificate is an acknowledgement of your hard work and perseverance, but the things you have learned in your pursuit of an education is what will propel you to achieve great things the rest of your life. While your accomplishment marks the completion of an educational destination, it is not an end to the journey of learning. My very best wishes to you for a bright and fulfilling future as you continue your education, pursue a career, and take your place in the community. CYPRESS COLLEGE OUTSTANDING GRADUATE FOR 2018

Abhiruchi Chaulagain 2018 Outstanding Graduate of the Year Abhiruchi Chaulagain’s career goals became perfectly clear on the April 2015 day that a 7.8 earthquake struck her native Nepal. Nearly 9,000 people died, roughly 22,000 were injured, and 3.5 million people were left homeless. This experience motivated Chaulagain to move to the U.S. in pursuit of a medical career focused on emergency and disaster medicine. “Enrolling myself in Cypress College was the first thing I did after moving to this country,” said Chaulagain, an Honor’s Program and (STEM)2 student who was selected as the recipient of this year’s Outstanding Graduate Award. “I was in desperate need of a fresh start, and when I visited the campus I knew this was the right place to start my journey. I was highly attracted by the diverse crowd, welcoming atmosphere, and tremendous student resources.” As she prepares to attend University of California, Irvine in the fall, she does so after significant academic achievement and campus involvement during her two years at Cypress College. A member of the President’s Honor Roll, Chaulagain has worked as a Student Ambassador, representing the college at events such as the 50th Anniversary Celebration, Senior Day, New Student Welcome Night, the Americana Awards, commencement, and at local schools. She is a member of the Honors, Chemistry, and STEM clubs, and served as an Integrated Club Council representative. She is one of the college’s top performers in the American Mathematics Association for Two Year Colleges competition. Chaulagain has volunteered at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach for more than 400 hours, assisting patients with eating, bathing, and walking. At the hospital, she was awarded the Most Dedicated Patient Care Ambassador award. “I will be forever grateful to Cypress for providing me with such wonderful opportunities, and helping me grow personally and academically” Chaulagain said. “With a content heart, I can say that I am CYProud.”

Farisa Morales NASA Astrophysicist

Curtis Scheetz is the founder and owner of Total Environmental Management, Inc., a leader in the HVAC industry for over 30 years providing temporary and emergency heating and cooling throughout California and the West.

NASA’s Farisa Morales hunts planets for a living. In addition to her work as an active astrophysicist searching for unknown planets at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, she is a professor at California State University, Northridge and Moorpark College.

After obtaining his associate degree in heating, ventilation and cooling from Cypress College, Curtis entered his profession on the ground floor working at Barber Colman in the stockroom and later as a controls application engineer. From there, he moved on to Western Air where he honed his skills in sales and then was promoted to service manager.

Her journey to the cosmos, though, is one Cypress College students can identify with. With a 3-year-old daughter and a 6-month-old baby, she began her college education at L.A. Mission College, where she majored in mathematics. As she completed her community college studies and transferred to UCLA, she participated in Caltech’s SURF internship program at NASA/JPL. While working at JPL as an academic part-timer and raising her kids, Morales graduated with a bachelor’s degree in astrophysics from UCLA. She continued to earn a master’s degree in physics from CSUN. Her work on planetary debris disks at JPL with the Spitzer Space Telescope evolved into her dissertation project, resulting in attainment of her doctorate in physics from USC.

He re-entered the sales force at York and later moved on to Southland Industries where his sales skills and success led him to become the sales manager of their then-new division known as Sisco. He managed a sales team of nine professionals and helped to make Sisco a well-known and respected service contractor in the Southern California marketplace. Curt’s passion for his industry, combined with an astute ability to think outside the box, led him to found TEM in 1985 as a way to provide emergency and temporary HVAC services lacking in the industry at that time. Starting as a part-time business with just one air handler, Curt tirelessly worked around the clock and today the company has the largest inventory of any HVAC rental company on the West Coast. Always searching for new challenges, Curt is as passionate about community service and fundraising as he is about climate. Currently he volunteers his time and efforts to help raise money for the Millers Children and Women’s Hospital, Long Beach and has also become involved in Serving People In Need, an organization that helps homeless individuals in Orange County. He is a strong advocate for Cypress College, his alma mater, where he helps with both fundraising and the promoting of the school’s stellar HVAC program. He is also a regular blood and platelet donor, and supports many other charitable organizations through TEM.

Morales currently studies stars with planetary debris disks — the dusty, ring-like structures, home to colliding asteroids and sublimating comets, that circle stars like the sun, and hint at planet formation processes, their architecture and composition. Morales also searches for the planetary companions stirring the dust around nearby stars. Her work is conducted using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Hale Telescope in Palomar. Born in the U.S., Morales was raised in Jalisco, Mexico, where she completed her primary education. As a teenager, she and her family migrated back to the U.S., where she completed high school in the Los Angeles County public school system. Morales married at 18 and began a family.

Curt has been married to his wife, Jill, an interior designer, for 42 years and is the proud father of a son, Curtis, and daughter, Natalie, both of whom live with their families in the Southern California area.

Academic dress, which includes a gown, a hood, and a mortarboard cap, originated in the oldest universities and colleges. In fourteenth century England, the statutes of most colleges and universities forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown which provided warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. The tailoring of gowns was strictly governed. In the early days of Oxford University, any tailor who departed from the authorized design of the gown, “even by a nail’s breadth,” was to be punished by the vice chancellor of the university or college. The four basic kinds of degrees awarded by the colleges and universities are the associate, the bachelor of arts, the master of arts, and the doctorate. The holders of those degrees are distinguished by their gowns and the hoods. The associate degree, awarded by community colleges, signifies completion of two years of specific work.

The Gowns Most academic gowns are black. The cut of the robe and sleeves, as well as the trimming, indicates various academic degrees. No trimmings are permitted on the gowns for the associate, bachelor of arts, or master of arts degrees. However, the gown worn by those who have earned their doctorate has a front facing of velvet and three bars of the same velvet across the sleeves.

Mortarboard Caps There is no general rule for the position of the tassel on a mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have required candidates to wear their tassels on the right side during commencement exercises and to shift them to the left side at the moment the degrees are conferred. This custom replaces individual hooding which was practiced many years ago and still remains in effect at some universities.

The Hoods Hoods fasten around the neck, drape over the shoulder, and fall down the back. Historically, hoods had several uses. They were used as a head covering; a cape; a receptacle for carrying books and other personal items; and as a bag to collect alms, since most medieval scholars were quite poor. Hoods are worn by those who have earned the master’s degree or doctorate. The colors on the hood represent the field of study and indicate from which college or university the individual received the degree.
