In this issue we’ll bring you news about the expansion of our Day Hospice,

which in my opinion is a ‘hidden gem’ will buy a book to help where patients who may not need a child understand about a full-time care can receive emotional, loved one dying social and psychological support in friendly and informal surroundings. The Day Hospice also provides an opportunity for some respite for carers who are otherwise supporting will provide the the patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Day Hospice expansion plans

our Hospice Matters is excited to bring you news of the expansion plans which will enable our Day Hospice to open its doors to even more patients and carers!

Launching in April next year, our service will increase from two days to five days per week and offer countywide, specialist care to help patients maintain their independence through rehabilitation, enablement, self-management and self-care.

The recreation and information programme that currently sees around 20 patients attend the Day Hospice two days a week for group discussions, games, quizzes, complementary therapy and demonstrations will continue as will the social aspect that patients enjoy so much.

“When I come to the Day Hospice I get to talk to other patients and have made friends which would be difficult for me to do otherwise. I enjoy the activities we do, especially the woodturning demonstration and the lady who came to talk to us about yoga.

We all get along well and have a singalong sometimes which is fun!”

Day Hospice therapists will work with patients and their carers to set out and agree achievable goals.

Through support programmes delivered on an individual or group basis over a period of six to 12 weeks, patients will learn how to manage breathlessness, fatigue and pain.

Therapists will also help teach them that through exercise and the help of aids and adaptations that can be made in their homes they can improve their independence. Patients

The new plans also aim to help as many patients with different conditions as possible including those needing palliative neurology care such as Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease, giving them access to all members of the multidisciplinary care team.

“We’re extremely grateful that through the generous donations received by the Hospice charity we are able to make our vision a reality for our patients and launch our new Day Hospice model. However the costs of maintaining the services will be a major challenge but hopefully with the ongoing help of our amazing supporters we will be able to continue to help our patients who are so desperately in need.”

Isle of Wight Challenge Darren & Claire Brockwell

“The Challenge is to run, walk or jog 106km around the Isle of Wight in either one day or two. We chose to go for it in one! Our target was to raise £350.00 each and having both had close members of our family cared for at Cynthia Spencer Hospice, we wanted to show our appreciation in a small way.

We set off on a bright sunny Saturday morning on a route that takes in hills, ravines, boggy woods, muddy fields and a chain ferry crossing! Starting from the south of the Island and heading clockwise we broke our run up into quarters and by the final stage we’d been treated to sea front views and a fantastic sunrise which was very welcoming after the chilly conditions we had experienced running through the night. Our final 12km brought the highest climbs of the challenge which were in excess of 500m. We reached the finish at 9.24am the next day to collect our medals and t-shirts, bringing to an end our toughest challenge to date.”

helped us plan how to raise awareness ahead of our challenge. We set up a ‘Just Giving’ page and organised a Race Evening which raised over £350. We also approached several local organisations who kindly donated prizes for a raffle that helped raise £200.

The generosity of friends, family and colleagues was amazing and we were extremely pleased to far exceed our target and reach £2,066 for the Hospice!”

ycle4Cynthia Head Marshall, Steve Storey is at home on two wheels. In fact, he has taken two cycling challenges, riding over 600 miles through four countries to raise over £6,000 for the Hospice so far. What’s more, he’s planning his next fundraising ride.

Steve said: ‘When I took on my first major cycle ride, London to Paris, I’d reached a time in my life, 50, where I wanted to set myself a target and cycling was the way forward for me’.

Raising money for Cynthia Spencer Hospice comes from a very personal place for Steve after losing his niece to cervical cancer. He told us: ‘My wife has raised money and also volunteers at the Hospice shop so it was about time I stepped up and did something for Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

“The sites you see on the route are fantastic and reaching the Eiffel Tower was absolutely unbelievable.

I was very emotional, it made me reflect on my four day’s cycling and on my niece.

I felt extremely proud.’

Steve has advice for anyone thinking about taking on one of our long distance cycling challenges: ‘Some days you’re cycling 120 miles so you need to have

done the training beforehand. Anyone can take on any of these challenges provided they’re prepared to train.

You’ll get a great feeling of pride but also achieve goals like getting fit and being healthy.’

We’re really pleased to be able to give you the opportunity to experience this amazing country and its scenery while raising money for the Hospice with our Iceland Trek. Setting off in July 2017, this is a trekking challenge to beat them all!

M It’s a family affair!

W

ith husbands and wives, mums and daughters, fathers and sons and even three generations pedalling together, it was certainly fun for all the family at our Cycle4Cynthia event in September.

The event, now in its 13th year, was held at Holdenby House by kind permission of James and Karen Lowther and saw an incredible 1,154 riders leap into their saddles to pedal almost 50,000 miles in total around the local countryside in aid of the Hospice.

For Jessica Pilkington from Spratton, the ride was particularly poignant as she, her 14 year old daughter Polly and Mum Patsy, aged 67, cycled in memory of Jessica’s sister Jasmine, who passed away at the Hospice some three years ago aged just 39: “Jasmine was so lovingly cared for by all the team at Cynthia Spencer that Polly wanted to do something in memory of her aunt. We’re delighted to have raised £1,000 already with money still coming in,” explained a very proud Jessica.

All three rides (50, 25 and five miles) were started by Northampton Saints and England captain Dylan Hartley before, in keeping with the family theme of the event, he pedalled off with partner Jo alongside, while she had their one year old daughter Thea in a basket on the back!

Hospice Fundraising Manager John Helm commented: “I cannot say a big enough thank you to all those who gave up their warm, cosy beds to come out and make it such another special year.

“From our team of marshals and volunteers, to Dylan and to Holdenby, to those cheering out in the villages and of course to the cyclists themselves, each with their own story as to why they were riding, who could have thought that it could be better than ever, yet it truly was!” he enthused.

It will be some time before it is known if the 2015 total of £76,000 has been bettered but

aking that extra effort for our patients is second nature for the clinical team at the Hospice but recently some of our staff turned their hands to planning romantic surprises.

When Daniel Jwanczuk wanted to make his wife Suzanne, who was receiving some care at the Hospice, feel special on their wedding anniversary the team stepped in to help him make some arrangements.

After 11 years of marriage, Daniel decided to spring a surprise on Suzanne so arranged for their vows to be renewed and wedding rings blessed in the Chapel. Staff, family and friends were all on hand to help him make sure it went off without a hitch, from Healthcare Assistant Emma who did Suzanne’s hair and makeup, to Hospice Chaplain Gerard O’Flaherty who performed the blessing, and Daniel’s in-laws who

On summing up his feelings Daniel said: “It’s true what they say: love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning. My darling Suzzi is the one that gave it meaning for me and I am totally in love and still adore this truly amazing and inspirational woman. Many thanks to the Hospice Staff for making our day extra special.”

Vintage and retro bargains galore at our new Hospice shop

I

f you’re a fan of all things retro (or in need of fancy dress inspiration) you’ll love our specialist vintage shop, which is a gold mine of fashion and accessories from the turn of the century right through to the 80s and 90s.

Launched in July 2016 our vintage and retro emporium is located in the Weston Favell Shopping Centre, opposite Card Factory, and next to Carphone Warehouse and is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday’s 10am to 4pm.

For Mark Thickbroom of Northampton, this year’s ride was full of drama as he unfortunately fell from his bike and was unable to complete the ride on the day. Thankfully he was spared serious injury thanks to his helmet. Undeterred by his fall, Mark was determined to finish the full 50-mile route and returned two weeks later to finish off his epic ride and claim his finisher’s medal. Pictured is Mark (centre) together with fellow 50-mile cyclists Geoff and Matt who completed the ride on the day, but returned to ride those remaining miles with him.

ANNIE’S TREE OF LOVE MEMORIES SERVICES ON THE EVENINGS OF

TUESDAY 13TH & THURSDAY 15TH DECEMBER AT 7.30PM THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY & ST THOMAS Our two services are informal and warm celebrations during which our Christmas tree lights will be illuminated in dedication to those who brightened up our lives but are no longer with us.

Both events will feature readings, carols from local choirs, solos from soprano Alison Roddy and lots of quiet moments for reflection.

By dedicating a light to your loved one and making a donation you will be helping Cynthia Spencer to light up the lives of patients and their families, not only at Christmas but the whole year through.

As a lovely keepsake, your dedications will be featured in our commemorative order of service which will be available at the Cathedral and on our website after the service. Our deadline for inclusion in the order of service is 24th November 2016.

Dedications received after this date will be featured in a commemorative book kept in our Chapel at the Hospice over Christmas.

This year we’re delighted to be able to bring the services to those who can’t make it to the Cathedral. We’ll be recording both services which will then be available to view on our YouTube channel ‘CynthiaSpencerTV’ from 23rd December (There’s a link available on our facebook page).

“I first went to the Tree of Love in 2013 which was the year my Dad passed away.

I dedicated a light to him and to my Nanna too. I remember being amazed by the tree, it is so big and when it’s lit up it’s so beautiful. The choirs are fantastic too, especially the children. It’s such a nice event and lovely to see so many people attending.

I always see lots of people that I know from my volunteering. This year I’ll be dedicating a light to my friend Jayne Hill who sadly died this year. Jayne worked for the Charity and we’ve done so much fundraising and had lots of fun together over the years.

Lottery fundraising tops £100,000 for the Hospice

W

e’re really delighted to announce that by playing Your Hospice Lottery in support of Cynthia Spencer Hospice you have helped raise an amazing £111,619 over the last two years!

Fundraising Manager, John Helm said: “We’re amazed by the total amount raised so far by our local lottery players. Their loyalty to Cynthia Spencer is of enormous value. It’s this kind of ongoing participation that is so important in ensuring we can continue to provide the vital care and support our patients and their families need.”

We teamed up with Your Hospice Lottery in March 2014, to bring our supporters the opportunity to help patients and their families who are living with life limiting illnesses in South Northamptonshire – as well as giving lottery members the exciting chance to win cash prizes.

Currently over 6,200 numbers are played in the lottery draw each week in support of our wonderful Hospice,

and £32,025 in cash prizes has been handed out to players so far.

Your Hospice Lottery is an easy and fun way of supporting Cynthia Spencer Hospice; it costs £1 per play a week, and there is £2,250 worth of prizes per week plus an amazing rollover prize that can reach up to £10,000!

Joanne’s headed ‘down under’ with her jackpot win e’re thrilled to announce our latest supporter to have won the Your Hospice Lottery jackpot came to see us at the Hospice recently to collect her £1,000 winnings.

For Joanne Smith, from Northamptonshire, the money is going to help her reconnect with family on the other side of the world! She explains: “I was absolutely over the moon when I received the call to say I had won, I couldn’t believe it! My daughter has moved to Australia so the winnings will go towards a trip to see her which is absolutely fantastic!
