Nigeria is a nation with a diversity of tribes and traditions and has a host of symbolic influences. Yet in a general view, their traditional fabrics and prints are the most important reflection of this culture. This ultimately contributes to an early discernment of which society it represents. One of the Nigerian fabrics usually referred to as Ankara are an expression of pride, emotion, tradition, trust and commemoration. It is a declaration as a lot of time and effort goes into making the fabric match into the intent for which it is being made; even thinking of how the individual can stick out extraordinarily for turning heads. Any colour, symbol/pattern or even form on the textile has an important role in its purpose, thanks to its patterns and bright colours. Perhaps these textiles may be indicative of social status, ingenuity and loyalty to unique tribal origins, thereby increasing their cultural importance. Still, I believe there is more to be learnt about Nigerian printing and its relevance.
