Juneisfastapproaching,andtheCreigiauCarnival Teamhavebeenbusybehindthescenespreparing plentyofactivitiesforthelocalcommunitytoenjoy. Onthe21stJunetheteamwillbeholdingaChildren’s SportsDay.Theeventswillbeginat10amuntil12noon atCreigiauRecreationalGround.Therewillbeamixture ofracesandfunactivitiessuchasthree-leggedraces, eggandspoonandmore. CreigiauCarnival2025willbetakingplaceon28June. Adultticketsare£3andunder16yearsgofree.The carnivalwillopenwithaprocessionstartingoutside Creigiau’sdoctor'ssurgery(Parc-y-Bryn)at1pm.The processionwillleadeveryonethroughParc-y-Fro,Heol Creigiau,StationRoad,andfinallystoppingatCreigiau RecreationGroundat2pm.

Thisyear’sthemeisbasedonChildren’sBooks; everyoneiswelcometodressupandeithermaketheir ownfloatorjointhewalkingparade.Prizeswillbe awardedforthebest-dressedwithintheprocession. Photographywillbetakenthroughouttheeventto capturespecialmomentsandallthewonderfulcostumes. Therewillbeanarrayofstalls,activities,foodanddrink. Aswellasplentyofentertainmentrangingfromadog showtoamagicshow,andmuchmoreforvisitorsto enjoyandparticipatein.

Tokeeptheeventasfamily-friendlyaspossibleandto respecttherecreationgroundasacommunalarea,the teamasksvisitorstoonlyconsumealcoholpurchasedon -siteandtoleavenotraceofrubbish.Parkingisavailable

onsite,butpleasebemindfulasthegatestoCreigiau Quarrywillbelockedaround4pm. Thecarnivalteamisformedofagroupoflocalvolunteers whoputalotofworkintoorganisingtheevent,andthey hopetomakethedayasentertainingandpleasantas possibleforall.

PentyrchCommunityCouncil(PCC)ismadeupof13 Councillors,albeitwecurrentlyhavesomevacancies. Councillorsattend2meetingsoftheCouncileach monthplusworkinggroupsestablishedtotakeforward initiativescontainedwithintheBusinessPlan.This ambitiousandcarefullyconsideredPlansetsouta progressiveprogramofinitiativesandtargetsaimedat enhancingthequalityoflifeforthepeopleofour communities.

CommunityEngagement.

PCCcontinuestoresearch,compile,publishand distributearound3,000copiesoftheever- popular ‘CommunityLink‘onaquarterlybasistohomesacross ourcommunities.Thispublicationcontainsnewsoflocal issues,eventsanddevelopmentsaswellashighlighting theconsiderableamountofworkandactivityconducted bylocalcommunity-basedgroups.The‘Link’isalso usefultobringlegalnoticesandplanningapplications andpermissionstotheattentionofresidents.

TheCouncilhasanactiveFacebookgroupwhichisa usefultoolforrealtimeengagementandforhighlighting issuesandeventswhichareoflocalinterestand importanceandalsomaintainsanumberofCommunity NoticeBoardsacrossourvillages.

PCCemploysaCommunityEngagementOfficer responsibleforworkingwithlocalpeopleand organisationsacrossourcommunitiestoprovide guidanceandsupporttothosefacilitatingactivitiesand servicesforlocalpeople.

ThehighlightoftheyearwastheCivicReceptionheld atPentyrchRFC.Communitygroupswereinvitedto attendandthepurposeofthiseventistwofold: Tothankgroupsfortheirvaluedcontributiontolifewithin ourcommunities

Toprovideanetworkingopportunity

AttheSeptember2024CivicReceptionalmost80 communitygroupswereinattendancetocelebratethe vibrantnatureofcommunityactivitiesinourvillages. Importantly,italsoacknowledgedthecontributionof severalwell-knownandrespectedlocalpeopletothe enrichmentofourcommunities.

TheCommunityCouncilremainsinastrongfinancial positionwiththemeanstodelivertheinitiativescontained withintheBusinessPlan.

MaintenanceofthePublicRealm.

PCC’sCommunityMaintenanceTeamhaveexperienced anotherverybusyyear.TheCouncilhasresponsibilityfor themanagementofover200acresoflandwhichnot onlyincludestheGarthanditsenvironsbutalso considerableareasofrecreational,woodland,cemeteries andopenspaces.TheworkfortheTeamisconstant giventhechallengesposedbychangingseasonsandthe multitudeoffixturesandfacilitiesacrossandbetweenour villagessuchasplayareas,greenspaces,cemeteries, styles,footpaths,kissinggates,benches,litterbinsand flowerbeds.

Acrossourvariouslandholdingstherearealargenumber oftrees.Unfortunately,theconditionofsomeofthe treeswassuchthatduringlastyearwehadnochoicebut tohavethemremoved.

Onamorepositivenote,weworkedwithCoed Caerdyddtoholdtreeplantingsessionsacrossour communities.

ActivitiesandAchievements

TheCouncilisproudtohavesupportedmanyinitiatives andprojectswithinourvillages,including:

PentyrchRFC - Duringthewintermonthsresidentswere abletoenjoyawarmspace,achatandlunch(soupand aroll).Thisfreeservicewasofferedduetoa£600grant fromPCC.

KeepCreigiauTidywasawarded£200forinsurance& otherrunningcosts.

GwaelodyGarthTuesdayClubwasawarded£550to enableresidentstogoontripsthroughouttheyear.

GarthRotarywasawarded£450forXmasdecorations.

PentyrchTennisClubwasawarded£600toassistwitha youthproject.

CreigiauTennisClubwasawarded£500toassistwitha wheelchairaccessiblegate.

CreigiauRecreationCharitywasawarded£5,000tofund thecompletionofafootpatharoundtherecreation ground.

TheFriendsofPentyrchPrimarySchoolwereawarded £500toassistthefundingofanoutdoorshelter.

PCChasbeenproactiveinfulfillingitsroleasan importantpartofthelocaldemocraticprocessby expressing,totheSenedd,theCountyCouncilandother representativepublicbodies,theviewsoflocalpeopleon strategicandsite-specificplansandprocesses concerningourlocalarea.

TheCardiff&ValeHealthBoardhasproposeda relocationofthePentyrchSurgery.Whilstithastaken sometimetogettheHealthBoardtoengagewiththe communitycouncilanumberofcommunitycouncillors didattendHealthBoardmeetings,discussingthe transportchallengesfacedbyresidentsaccessingthe proposedsurgeryatRhydlafar.Unfortunately,the conclusionsreachedbytheHealthBoarddidnotmeet ouraspirations&PCCagreedthatitcouldnotsupport thereport.

PCCsupportedtheannualRemembranceServiceat PentyrchCenotaphandChristmaseventsaroundthe villages.

FortheRemembranceServicePCCorganisethe purchaseofpoppywreathsforthecounciland communitygroupsfromtheRoyalBritishLegion.

Asmallnumberofresidentsareinvolvedinourregular litterpicksandweareverygratefultoresidentswhogive uptheirtimetoimproveourenvironment.

Prioritiesfor2025/26

TheCommunityCouncilrecognisedthehardshipcaused bythecostoflivingcrisisanddecidednottoincrease therateofcounciltaxpaidbyresidents.

PCChasinplaceaBusinessPlanwhichsetsoutits ambitionsforthecomingyears.Thisincludes improvementstolocalpublictransport,thesustainable managementofourlandassetsandtheenvironment,an improvednetworkoffootandcyclingpaths,exploring waystoimproveaccesstomedicalservices,afocuson youthprovisionandparticipation,accessibilityoftoddler groupsforparents/carers/childminders/grandparents etc,treeplanting,enhancedcommunityengagement andofcoursesupportforlocalcommunitygroups, events,buildingsandorganisations.

Varietyisthespiceoflife,theysay.Wellwe’vecertainly hadthatinGarthRotaryoverthepastyear - fromaflutter atChepstowracestochasingtheChristmasbaubles downtheroadaftertheChristmasstorms.Wealsohad atastycurryinanIndianrestaurantinLlandaff.We collectToolsforSelfReliance,kitchenutensilsforCardiff BoomerangCharity,children’sToyBoxandbikes.We alsoholdanannualfundraisernightofmusicand dancingtosupportvariouslocalcharities.Thisyear’s musicnightonSaturday7JuneinPentyrchvillagehall willcontributetotheNoah’sArkchildren’scharity.Local firmsdonatetheraffleprizes.Wearealsoinvolvedinthe Santa’ssleighridesaroundPentyrchandCreigiau, erectingthePentyrchChristmastreeandplacingfestive baublesonthetreesnexttoPentrychshops.We organisetheEastereggprojectwithlocalbusinesses displayinglargeEastereggsforcustomerstowin.The venuesaretheValeResortandLeisureClub,Pentyrch RugbyClub,PentyrchPharmacy,CreigiauGolfClub, CreigiauInnandGwalod-y-GarthInn.Thisyear’sEaster eggdrawsawaprofitofalmost£400forRotary’s charitableactivities.

TheHappyMemoriesCaféonthethirdMondayofthe monthinPentyrchRugbyClub - 11.00-13.00 - provides freecoffeeandcake,atopicfordiscussion,amemory task,andfinisheswithajollysing-along.Another monthlyeventistheTinontheWallcollection. Therehasbeenanincreaseinvehiclecrimeacross Cardiff.InMarchandAprilthreekeylessentryvehicles werestolenfromtheGwaelod-y-GarthandPentyrch area.ThevehiclesstolenwereLandRover/RangeRover andFordFiestamodelvehicles.Statisticallyacrossthe forceareabothtypesofvehiclesaretargetedmorethan anyothermakeormodelforkeylessentrythefts. Carswithkeylessentryunlockautomaticallywhenthe keycomeswithinashortdistanceofthecar.Thiscanbe frominsideapocketorbag.Ifyouhavetopushabutton onyourcarkeytoopenyourcar,youdon'thavekeyless entry.

Keylesscartheftor'relaytheft'iswhenadeviceisused tofoolthecarintothinkingthekeyiscloseby.This unlocksthecarandstartstheignition.

Thievesonlyneedtobewithinafewmetresofyourcar keytocapturethesignal,evenifit’sinsideyourhome. Thismeansthatevenifyourcarandhomearesecure, thievescanstillunlock,startandstealyourcar. Youcanprotectyourkeylessentrycarwiththefollowing advice:

 Whenathomekeepyourcarkey(andthespare)well awayfromthecar.

 Putthekeysinascreenedorsignal-blockingpouch, suchasaFaradayBagandcheckifthebagorpouch isstillworkingeveryfewmonths.

Ruralcrime

Withthelambingseasonunderwaywehavealreadyhad somereportsoflivestockworryinginPentyrchandother ruralcommunitiesnearby.Oneoftheseincludeda pregnantewebeingattackedbyadogoffthelead resultingintheewerequiringtreatment. Incidentssuchasthesecancauseasignificantfinancial impactandstressforlivestockownersandcanresultin injuryorsufferingtotheanimalandinworsecasethe deathofanunbornanimal.

Candogownerspleaseactresponsiblestickto designatedfootpaths,keepdogsonalead,andavoid fieldswithlivestockinifpossible.

CommunitySpeedWatch(CSW)

PentyrchCommunitySpeedWatchhasbeenrunning since2019,makingitthelongestrunningCSWinthe Fairwatersector.Wearelookingforadditionalvolunteers fromthecommunitytohelpitcontinueinmaking Pentyrchasafeplacetotravel.Wealsopreviouslyhad oneinCreigiauwhichwearelookingtore-establish.

CSWisanationalinitiativewhere,inpartnershipwiththe police,membersofcommunitiesusedetectiondevicesto monitorlocalvehiclespeeds.

Onalovely,warmTuesdayevening,April29th,wehad the36thPentyrchHillRace.It’sanannualtrailracefrom PentyrchthenoveraroundGarthHill.Thisyear,the distanceofthenewroute,was9.3kmwith340mof ascentwithsomeverysteepclimbs.,Wehad258 entries,witheveryonecompletingthecourse.Abig shoutouttothe60marshalsaroundthecourse,who guidedandencouragedtherunnersandmadesure everyonewassafeandsound.Theathletesreally appreciatethesupportfromthemarshalsandspectators. Thankstotheteamoftimekeepers,recorders,and registrationofficials,basedattheRugbyCluband sweepersatthebackoftherace,whomadesurenoone wasleftbehind.Wealsoappreciatethesupportofthe landowners.AllmoneyraisedwillgotowardsrestoringSt Catwgs,FOPSA,andcoveringthecostsofpermitsand otherexpenses.Weweregratefulforthe£100grantfrom PCCtobuythesweepers’tabardsandroadwarning signs.ThankyoutotheRugbyClubforlettingususe theirfacilities.

Weweretalkingoverour eveningmealtonightand myfather,RobertGardner wastellingusofwhathe remembersofVEDayMay 8th1945.InPentyrch village.

Hewasthenjusta14year oldboy,aboutthesame ageasmysonsJamesand Robertaretoday.Hewas livinginCastleCottagejust aboveStCatwgsChurch. EveryonewastoldafewdaysbeforebyChurchillthatthe 8thwasgoingtobedeclaredVEDay,thisallowed everyonetoprepareforthecelebrations.

LivingjustaboveStCatwgshewasveryawareofthe churchbellsbeginningthecelebrationday,beingrungfor afewhoursthatmorning.latercongregatedatwhatwas thenthefootballandrugbyfieldwhereTroedYGarthis today.greatbonfirehadbeenerectedandthevillage cametogetherandsangpopularsongsofthetime accompaniedbyDorothyJohnonthepianoaccordion. Wethinkit'spossiblethatmyDadandhisschoolpal DonaldWibley,arethelastremainingoriginalPentyrch peoplewhowouldrememberthatdayinPentyrch,unless youknowsomeoneelse?HappyVEDayeveryone.

WecelebratedEidinschoolonApril 1stwithcelebrationstowelcome familiesonthegateandalsoa specialassembly.Childrenwhohad markedEidwiththeirfamilieshad theopportunitytosharetheir experienceswiththerestofthe school.OurNurseryandReception childrenhadawonderfulday learningaboutandcelebratingEid withTeachingAssistant,Mrs Ahmed.MrsAhmedbroughtingifts foreachchildandtheyspenttime listeningtoastoryallaboutEid. Therewerelotsofwonderful discussionsaboutwhyandhowthis festivaliscelebrated.Thechildren especiallylovedlookingatthe prayermat,prayerbeadsandThe Qur'anaswellaswatchingthe teachershavehennaartontheir hands. /඗උඉඔඉඖඌ5ඍඏඑ඗ඖඉඔ(එඛගඍඌඌඎ඗ඌ

Thisyear,fortheveryfirsttime,we enteredintotheUrddEisteddfod withpupilsbeinggiventhe opportunitytoparticipatein recitationsanddramaperformances intheWelshlanguage.OnSaturday 8thMarch,pupilsinyear1to6took partinthelocalEisteddfodatYsgol Plasmawr.Wecannotbeginto expresshowproudweareofallof thepupilsfortheirincredible performances,theyareacredittoour school.Particularcongratulationson thedaywenttoHeatherforgetting throughtoandthenwinningthe mainstageintheafternooninthe year3/4recitationforWelsh learnersandSophie,Marthaand Lily-Mae,year6forcomingsecond intheirdramaperformanceofa sceneforWelshlearners.Bothgot throughtotheregionalfinals!!Onto theregionalsonApril1stand5thand onceagainourpupilsshone.Faced withahugestage,brightlightsanda massiveaudienceatCardiffUniversity StudentsUnion,thechildrenwereall soincrediblystrongandperformedout oftheirskinsagainststiffcompetition.

Heatherdeliveredanamazing performance,securingthirdplace. Weareincrediblyproudofher achievement.Ouryear6girlsputon abrilliantperformancetowinand havenowearnedthemselvesaspot intheNationalEisteddfodat MargamParkduringtheMayhalf term.Daiawngirls,bendigedig! Sophiesharedherexcitement:“It wasanamazingexperiencetobeon thebigstagecompetinginsucha prestigiouscompetition.Wemetlots ofdifferentchildrenandhadagreat time!”

OnMarch6thwecelebratedWorld BookDay.Everyclasscelebrated anauthor,studiedtheirbooksand completedfunactivitiesbased aroundtheirauthor.WorldBookDay aimstoinspirealoveofreadingand ourchildrenwereabletodressup asbookcharacters,takepartin storytellingsessionsandbook swaps.Additionally,ourpupil leadershipgrouphavealsocreated abrand-newlibraryareawithanaim forallchildrentodevelopaloveof reading.Theylaunchedthenew schoollibrarysystemonWorldBook Daytoeachclass.Theyhavemade librarycardstogivetoallthe childrenandtheynowhavethe opportunitytovisitourschoollibrary onceevery2weekstoswaptheir booksforanewone.ThePupil LeadershipGrouphavebeengiven differentresponsibilitiesandare runningthelibraryindependently makingsureourbooksarebeing takencareofandeachclassisable tosharetheloveofreading.Mia said,“Itwasreallyfunhelpingallthe childrenfindnewbookstoexplore.” Wearealwaysonthelookoutfor donationsofgoodqualitybooks suitableforages3-11particularlynonfictionandpoetry.Ifyouareableto helppleasecontacttheschooloffice PentyrchA5@hwbcymru.net Thankyou!

TheBigWalkandWheelisaUKwideeventthatrunseveryyearin partnershipwithBikeabilitytrust.As partoftheSustranswalkandwheel challengethechildrenhavebeen encouragedtowalk,scooterorcycle toschool.Thispromoteshealthy choicesanditwasamazingtosee lotsofchildrentakingpartinthis challenge.Thereareplentyofbike sheltersonsitethatthechildrencan usewhentheywouldliketobring theirscootersorbikestoschooland weencouragethisgoingforward.

Year4enjoyedafunsquashtaster sessionthishalfterm!Theypractisedcontrollingtheball,which helpedthemtoimprovetheirhandeyeco-ordination.Theyalsopractisedsidesteppingtobecomequickerontheirfeet,assquashcanbea quickspeedgame.Catchingtheball withboththeir‘goodandbad’hands wastrickybutfun,anditmadethe childrenmoreskilful.Theylearnt moreabouthowthegameisplayed, withinfourwalls.Thesessionkept thechildrenactive,andtheircatchingskillsimprovedalot.Working withpartnerswasgreat,andthey enjoyedthrowingandcatchingthe ballwithoutrackets.Theyhavecontinuedexploringthegameduring theirPEsessions.

Aspartoftheirtransitionto secondaryschool,year6were askedtotakepartinafootball tournamentonthebrandnew4G pitchatRadyrComprehensive.They playedlotsofgameswiththecluster schoolsandeveryonepulled togetherandshowedgreat sportsmanship.Theygottomeet someofthePEteachersfromthe highschoolwhowillbecomefamiliar facesinSeptember.

Whilsttheydidn’twinonthis occasion,theyallreallyenjoyed takingpart.Jamiesaid,“AscaptainI enjoyedseeingeveryonewantingto playandweenjoyedtheexperience ofplayingonthenewastropitch.I’m lookingforwardtostartinginmynew

Atthestartofthehalfterm,year3 wentonaschooltriptoCardiffMuseumastheirintroductiontotheir learningexpedition‘Wonderful Wales’.Here’swhattheyhadtoreportontheirvisit.

‘WegottofindoutallaboutWalesin thepast.Firstly,weexploredthe dinosaurandanimalsection,and builtaspecialdinosaurjigsaw.We sawawoollymammoth,ahyena andmuchmore.Afterthat,wesaw lotsofdifferentrocks - somewere moonrocks!Weinvestigatedsparkly,beautifulcrystals.alsousedpaper andcrayonstosketchspecialfossils onatable.Afterlunch,wewentupstairstotheArtGalleryandwehad tobeveryquiet!Wesawlotsofinterestingthingssuchasstatuesand paintings.Therewasahumongous vase!youhaveeverthoughtabout goingtoCardiffMuseum,wehighly recommendit!’Year3pupils

Aspartofyear5’snewlearning expeditionforSpring2halfterm,they wereabletogoonaschooltriptothe RhonddaHeritageParktolookatand experiencelifeinaWelshcoalmine. Thetripwasamazing,andtheyhad thechancetodosomanydifferent activities.Theyhadatourofthe museumandthenwentdownintothe coalmine.TourguideJohntaughtthe classlotsoffactsaboutwhatthe differentworkersandthechildrenhad todo.Hetaughtthemaboutthe minersusingbirdstotelliftherewere dangerouslevelsofcarbonmonoxide inthemineandhowthechildrenwere responsibleforopeningandclosing thedoorsforthehorsesthatworked underground.Hetoldtheclassthat theyoungestpersonreportedtohave workedinthemineswasjust3years old.Johnalsoplayedafewprankson theclass,makingthemthinkthere wereratsbytheirfeetwhenitwas darker!Thechildrenalsowentona virtualroller-coasterrideattheendof thetour. Johnalsotoldthemthatthe coalfromtheRhonddaHeritagePark wasusedonboardtheTitanic.Thetrip reallyhelpedbringlearningtolife throughexperiencingtheWelshCoal minesfirsthand.

Year4transformedintoascenefrom medievalWalesaschildrendressed upasknightsfortheirWOWday.As partoftheir'WonderfulWales'learning thechildrendelvedintothefascinating history of Owain Glyndŵr and his role incallingthefirstWelshParliament. Thechildrenlearntaboutthehistoryof shieldsanddesignedtheirown.The afternoonwasfilledwithexcitementas studentsappliedtheirmathsskills, specificallyanglesanddegreesof turn,tonavigateatreasurehunt aroundtheschool.Theactivity mirroredthemovementsofOwain Glyndŵr as he led the Welsh against HenryIVintheirfightforland.We werealsofortunatetohaveamember oftheSeneddjoinusinclass.They sharedinsightsintotheworkingsof theSenedd,explaininghowimportant decisionsaremadeandthetypesof issuesthatareaddressedinWelsh Parliament.Theycontinuedtheir explorationbycomparingthehistorical eventsof600yearsagowiththe modern-daydecision-making processesinWelshParliament.

Onthe17thMarch,Year5wenton aresidentialtriptoDolygaer.Hereis theirreportoftheexcitingtimethey had.

Ourfirstactivitieswerecrate stackingandthenaverticalobstacle coursecalledasquirrelrun.That eveningaftersometimeplaying tablefootballorgiantconnectfour weheadedoutforournightactivity, BushCraft.Wehadtobuilda waterproofshelterbigenoughfor ourteamtofitunder...inthedark! Thisisarguablytwiceasimportantasretainingasurgery inourvillagegiventwicethenumberofpeopleusethe pharmacyasopposedtothesurgery.

Imusthavebeenoneoftheearlymembers,althoughnot presentatitsinception,andhaveseenitshighsand lows,although,thehighshavebeenmanymorethanthe lows.TheClubisnowagroupseekingstimulationfrom thearrayof,oftenveryeloquent,speakers.

Recently,wehavehadaProfessorofMedicine,anda ProfessorofPoetry,twoverycontrastingprofessions:a scientistfromtheRoyalMint(withatourplannedinthe nearfuture),aconsummateactor,withherfascinating hour- longmonologue.Afterthepresentations,our guestsnormallysitdownwithmembersforacupoftea.I listenedtoaconversationasouractorwasasked:“How doyourememberallthewords?”“Ithinkinpictures”,she said.“IfIhavethepictureinmyheadthewordsflow”. Shehasaboutthirtydifferenttitlesofmonologuessheis abletooffer.Weseeher,averywelcomeguest,twicea year.
