Dear Friends, When I received the telephone call from Cygnus informing me that I had been offered the position of Assistant Editor, I was filled with joy and excitement, but also a little trepidation.

Joy and excitement because I felt I could contribute my many years of experience in the print and publishing industry, along with my life-long interest in personal development, to the wonderful work the Cygnus team do. But also feelings of trepidation about whether I would be able to live up to the many roles and facets of this job, and the great privilege of helping to bring this beautiful magazine and its many benefits to you, and of the enormous responsibility of that role.

I had had a difficult year financially, last year, as many of you may also have had, and coupled with relationship problems, I decided I needed a fresh start. What better place for a fresh start than in the magnificent Brecon Beacons, working with warm and genuine people in tune with my values and beliefs? When other areas of my life, too, had all seemed to come to a natural end at that point, it was undoubtedly going to be an easy matter to ‘make the break’!

A mirrored upheaval Not so simple. There followed two months of battling through storms and floods, driving back and forth on a four-hour round trip, looking for suitable accommodation, before I found a place I could call home, but that wouldn’t be available until January.

In some ways those storms and floods mirrored my own sense of upheaval, my concerns and worries about a whole lifestyle change, and my natural desire to cling on to circumstances that I was used to, like a pair of outworn shoes – so comfortable, so familiar, but well past their sell-by date. I so wanted to move, but resistance was definitely there.

The first snow fall came, and with it solid ice. I slipped and broke my right wrist quite badly.

Being fairly independent (and right hand dominant), and not used to any kind of health problem it came as quite a shock to me, along with all the implications that that brought for someone living on their own. How do I move house and pack, is the job still available for me, and how do I achieve all of these and more, including meeting my hospital appointments, when I’m not allowed to drive for six weeks?

Then came the smaller challenges that I was confronted with day by day. How do I get washed and dressed with one hand? How do I open cellophane packages, peel vegetables, open tins, feed the cats, get the shopping in, go to the bank, and a plethora of daily tasks, that I normally do without thinking, became an enormous challenge made worse by further heavy snowfall.

Creative solutions And yet there was a certain satisfaction and pleasure in finding creative solutions to each and every situation – and I did find those solu-

tions. The everyday things that I took for granted I began to see with fresh eyes. I learnt to discover new ways forward, and to rediscover my sense of resourcefulness and determination, my sense of playfulness and humour – and surely laughing in the face of adversity is one of the greatest of human abilities.

And I remembered a book Zen Mind, Beginners Mind that I had read so long ago, that stated that one should approach each and every situation with a beginner’s mind, a fresh mind, as if coming to it for the very first time. It is only in that beginner’s state that we are able let go of our limiting beliefs about what is possible or not possible, what we can or cannot achieve.

Do something different There comes a time for all of us, at some point in our lives, when circumstances aren’t working for us as we’d like, when crises may occur, but old patterns are simply breaking down to make way for the new. With a background in NLP training, I know well the phrase ‘If something isn’t working, do something different – anything different.’ And here I was presented with a golden opportunity to do everything different! Of course, even using my left hand to accomplish everything was doing something different, and thereby building and strengthening new neural pathways in my brain by doing so, as well as giving me an opportunity to think creatively, to gain that beginner’s mind, to look to the future with a mind now open to new possibilities, and to let go of the past. What a ‘break’ through!

When I was sent the book choices for the month by Sarah I had to smile at what seems to be a common event at Cygnus – the synchronicity of such apt choices that have special meaning just at the right time that you need them most. They have inspired me and I hope they inspire you.

Something new is coming The title of Neale Donald Walsch’s new book, When Everything Changes, Change Everything (see p. 4) explains it all. When everything changes, he tells us, the best thing to do is to change everything – physical and non physical, and that includes emotions, thoughts, even your truths. What we may perceive as a crisis may be looked at as just the process of change – a breaking down of old patterns so that something new may be created. Change may be scary, but it can also be exciting: change indicates that something new is coming.

In Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul

(see p. 8), Deepak Chopra eloquently describes that breakthroughs occur when you start thinking about your problems in a fresh new way.

The biggest breakthroughs, he says, occur when you start thinking in an unbounded way.

Dr Chopra describes how the body is a reflection of the mind, and that each one of us has invented our bodies and our personalities through our beliefs, conditioning and responses to everyday stress, but we have done this unconsciously. It is my belief that our lives, too, are but a reflection of these mental processes.

And this theme continues for me, in Steve Taylor’s book, Waking from Sleep (see p. 6).

He explains how our normal state of consciousness with which we experience the world is really a kind of ‘sleep’ state. What we experience is only our perception of the world, moulded by our beliefs and thoughts.

Co-creating reality ‘We are in the cave looking at the shadows on the wall. Our vision of an inanimate, separate and indifferent world isn’t objective, in the same way that a blurred picture from a faulty camera isn’t a true image. The vision is the product of our psyche, of the mechanism and structures of our mind.’

Our mind, he says, does not observe reality – it co-creates it.

He goes on to describe higher states of consciousness, or what he calls ‘an awakening experience’, which often brings with it a strong sense of love and compassion for other beings, a feeling of newness and aliveness, and a sense of the sacred within, and how to live more often from that awakened state.

Once more, how apt this book is for the present time and the changing season. February, the start of Spring, brings fresh hopes and new beginnings, a time for all of us to awaken to the mysteries within, to gain that sense of newness and aliveness and, as Deepak Chopra says, to live from the soul.

much longer, before some new piece of information was unveiled that seriously confronted his notion of the world. Perhaps half a dozen times during his life such a major event or development occurred that he heard about.

In my father's day that window of change dropped to only fifteen or twenty years. That's about as long as my dad could hold on to his ideas about life and how it works and what is true about everything. Sooner or later something would happen to disrupt his whole mental construction and require him to alter his thoughts and concepts.

In my own life span that time has been reduced to just five to eight years.

In the lifetime of my children it will be reduced to something like two years – and possibly less.

And in the lifetime of their children it could be

reduced to thirty or forty weeks.

This is no exaggeration. You can see the trend. Social scientists say that the rate of change is increasing exponentially. In the time of my great-grandchildren the period of time between changes will be reduced to days. And then, perhaps even hours.

The speed of our communications is catching up with the speed of our alterations.

I'm lying on my back, looking up at the ceiling.

It's dark, but the darkness is different from normal. It's full of something, alive with something – a powerful harmonious force. The darkness is so thick with this force that I feel that I can reach out and touch it. It's almost solid, as if the air is concentrated with 1000 times more oxygen than normal.

But this force isn't just in my bedroom, it's everywhere – a kind of essence, something fundamental, which fills the whole of space and the whole of the universe. It feels like the heart of things, the source of everything that exists, and it fills me with a sense of calm euprhoria, a sense that everything is well in the world, that there's nothing to worry about. No matter how messy and frustrating life can be, no matter how much trouble there is in the world, in some way all of that is just on the surface. Below the surface the whole universe is gently vibrating with warm radiance and is filled with harmony.

And in some way I am a part of this force.

There is no 'me' and no 'it'. I'm being carried along by it, out there in space, surfing on the waves of this ocean of bliss.

The 'sleep' of our normal consciousness Most people spend most of their time in a state of not being fully aware of the beauty of the world around us. We see the world as a familiar, mundane place, whereas in reality it is incredibly fascinating, beautiful and real.

Awakening experiences – or higher states of consciousness – are a state of consciousness or being in which our vision of the world and our relationship to it are transformed; an experience of clarity, revelation and joy in which we become aware of a deeper (or higher) level of reality, perceive a sense of harmony and meaning, and transcend our normal sense of separateness. We become fully awake, experiencing an intense state of connection to the world.

Some materialistic scientists believe that awakening experiences are just 'tricks of the mind' caused by abnormal brain functioning. As a result, they claim they have no more validity than a hallucination or a dream and the vision of the world they give us is an illusion. But I believe that the reverse is true: these experiences are more real than our normal state. It's more accurate to see them as a kind of 'waking up' from the sleep of our normal state. Our normal consciousness is narrow and restricted and gives us a false and limited experience of reality. That's why, in awakening experiences, there is a sense that our consciousness has become wider and clearer and that we have gained access to a deeper and truer level of reality which is normally hidden from us.

In particular, my aim in 'Waking from Sleep' is to try to explain why these experiences occur, to look at what causes them. The psychologist Abraham Maslow believed that awakening experiences occurred accidentally and there was nothing you could do to generate them.

Other religious-minded authors believe that the experiences are given by the grace of God. But I don't believe that this is the case. Although

some experiences may occur spontaneously, I believe that they have two basic sources – disruption of homoeostasis (equilibrium) or by an intensification and stilling of life-energy – and that they are natural and innate.

This is important because once we understand why awakening experiences occur, it should become easier for us to have them.

Rather than waiting for them, we should be able to make a conscious effort to generate them. And in the same way, once we understand the basic psychological 'mechanics' of awakening experiences, we should be able to understand what living in a state of permanent wakefulness would mean and how to go about trying to attain this.

Transforming our vision You can think of our normal consciousness as a particular kind of 'mental structure'. In awakening experiences, the structure dissolves, but it usually reforms itself soon afterwards, like the limb of a newt regenerating after being cut off.

That's why awakening experiences are usually temporary. But under certain circumstances, either through a long process of spiritual practice and development or through a sudden experience of detachment and liberation (often caused by intense suffering), the structure permanently dissolves away. The 'mould' of the structure is broken and so can't reform itself.

There is a different structure in place instead.

As a result, the person becomes permanently awakened.

I certainly don't want to underestimate the kind of effort needed to permanently transform your state of being. Many mystics struggled for

years – even decades – to bring about a shift to a higher state of consciousness, subjecting themselves to severe disciplines and arduous spiritual practices. Spiritual paths such as Patanjali's eight-limbed path or the Eightfold Path of Buddhism demand great reserves of will-power and self-control, as well as a great deal of guidance from others who have followed them before. However, one of the central points of 'Waking from Sleep' is that states of awakening are much closer to us than we might think. In a sense, higher states of consciousness are actually natural and normal, and it is our 'normal' consciousness that is abnormal or, more strictly, sub-normal.

Most people take it for granted that the vision of the world that our normal consciousness gives us is the true picture of reality, so much so that our culture is dominated by a view of the world as an inanimate, mechanical place.

Awakening experiences transform this vision, moving from lower-intensity experiences – when our surroundings become more real, beautiful and alive – to the highest intensity of awakening, when the world dissolves into an ocean of pure spirit.

The idea that higher states of consciousness – at least at a less intense level – may be normal to some peoples in the world may leave me open to accusations of romanticizing other cultures. There is, however, a great deal of evidence suggesting that peoples such as the Native Americans, the Australian Aborigines or the peoples of Polynesia had (and perhaps still have in some cases) a naturally 'spiritual' vision of the world. I also hold the belief that, in some respects, children have a naturally 'awake' vision of the world too.

What lies beyond Waking up isn't just something we do for ourselves, for our own personal benefit or gratification. It does enhance our life massively, in the same way that being freed from prison or regaining full vision after being partially sighted enhances a person's life. But it isn't just a personal matter – as well as transforming our perception and our experience, waking up transforms our relationships and affects society as a whole, even the world as a whole. It's precisely because we're 'asleep' – because we perceive the world as a dreary, inanimate place and ourselves as separate, that we need to wake up on behalf of the human race as a whole, on behalf of the world as a whole and on behalf of the whole evolutionary process that has taken life from the first single-celled amoeba to the astoundingly complex creatures with a hundred billion-celled brains such as us.

The real significance of these experiences is that they are an awakening. They give us a glimpse of the world of beauty, meaning and unity that lies beyond the normal human world of separation – a new world which it is possible for us to inhabit permanently.

Most of us are beginning to realise that the commodity least available to us is the truth.

Politicised news now has so much spin attached to it that it is impossible to unravel the knots. Scientific news is proven to be wrong so many times that most have stopped listening. Flu pandemics turn out not to happen and the pharmaceutical responses turn out to have more severe side effects than if we had just put up with a few days of unpleasant symptoms. The sovereignty of every European country has been swept away in Lisbon and the Copenhagen Conference finished in shambles because the global climate has not changed for the last ten years.

With all of these lies and half-truths in the 'official' world, is it any wonder that so many are turning to 'channelled' sources for information? But then we find that the likes of Lord Sananda and Lord Metatron are, at the least, very unreliable with the best interests of the Earth and humanity not being served.

Question – why would beings who claim to be at the pinnacle of soul development still have an ego that requires the title 'Lord'?

Then, we are urged to take part in massmeditation exercises which are supposed to help the planet. The first example of this was in 2007 with the cry we must 'fire up the grid'. This turned out to be an exercise by those who carry out psychic attack to see if the population was gullible enough to fall for the ploy. The 'grid' in question that everyone was so keen to 'fire up' was, in fact, the grid on the United Nations’ flag.

Many are drawn to the story of the Annunaki and see them as humanity’s hope but then we discover that Lords Sananda and Metatron are Annunaki. These are not our 'Gods' but beings who claim to have built humans as a slave race to serve them.

And on top of all this, 2012 is approaching very rapidly.

Is it any wonder that we are concerned and confused? So, where do we go from here? How do we obtain the answers we so desperately need?

Believe it or not, the answer is very simple. We have become so used to being told what to do by others that we have forgotten our own inner voice.

Raising our energies Since 1996, we have been changing our energy patterns, raising our personal energies to the point where we connect directly to our Higher Self. As we raise our energies and connect with the greater part of the soul, we begin to realise that we are not as small as we thought we were. With this

An inner revolution What we need is a quiet revolution that takes place on an inner level. And this is what all of these agendas are designed to disrupt – our process of reintegration. We are not 'ascending' anywhere, even the term ascending was coined to deliberately mislead, what we are doing is bringing the whole of the soul back into the body. Take a deep breath and do it.

Start by making a positive affirmation quietly to yourself. This needs to be a clear statement of intent to your higher self saying 'I wish to reintegrate my soul without interference'. With that intent sincerely made, the next stage is to make room for the higher self to enter the body. This can only be achieved by clearing space, cleaning out all of the emotional debris we all carry around. The best, and simplest way of doing this is to use the giveaway – see below. We all carry emotions from our past and these need to be cleared. In my first semester in medical, I walked into a stifling dissection room and faced a body lying under a sheet. Pulling back that sheet was shocking – and definitely exciting as well. • The body is at constant risk for contamination and disease; a hostile environment teems with invading germs and viruses waiting to overwhelm the body's immune defences.

• Cells and organs are separare from each other and should be studied separately.

• Random chemical reactions determine everything that happens in the body.

• The brain creates the mind through a storm of electrical impulses combined with biochemical responses that can be manipulated to alter the mind.

• Memories are stored in brain cells, even though no one has ever discovered how or where this occurs.

• Nothing metaphysical is real: reality comes down to atoms and molecules.

• Genes determine our behaviour; like microchips, they are programmed to tell the body what to do.

• Everything about the body evolved as a matter of survival, the ultimate goal being to find a mate and reproduce.

The Forgotten Miracle

I used to find this list very convincing. The bodies that I examined and treated in my medical practice conformed to it. Patients came to me with parts that were wearing out.

I could pare their symptoms down to treatable problems. I prescribed antibiotics to fend off invading bacteria, and so on. And yet every one of these people lived lives that had nothing to do with machines breaking down and needing repair. These lives were full of meaning and hope, emotions and aspirations, love and suffering. Machines don't lead such lives. Neither do collections of organs.

Resurrecting the soul Without a doubt, the body needs reinventing. Each of us is a soul made flesh.

MADDY HARLAND

A couple of years ago a manuscript called Birthrites landed across Tim Harland’s desk and he started to read it immediately. ‘It engaged me straight away. The manuscript was very well written, grounded and I found it deeply moving,’ he says.

We have been publishing books about ‘earth care’ – permaculture design, edible forest gardening, woodland management, eco-building, renewable energy – since the early 1990s but the ‘people care’ aspect of permaculture which we consider vital had not been explored. I was also aware that our wonderful list of talented authors are mostly men and I wanted to redress this so I sent out an inner request for more women authors. The intuitive Jackie Singer must have registered because the manuscript arrived soon afterwards.

I have long felt that ceremony and ritual has an important role to play in building community and inner healing. If we can celebrate and mourn together, mark rites of passage and significant events in groups, we will rebuild and strengthen community and thus our capacity to co-operate. We will also build group consciousness. These are vital aspects of our evolutionary journey as humans – underpinning values for living more peacefully and more ecologically. They engender sharing of skills and resources, compassion and nonviolence, and a sensitivity to the limits of the earth.

The joyful times that I spend with Glennie Kindred, another intuitive and masterful celebrant, have long emphasised this aspect of inner sustainability. We of course need practical approaches like permaculture design and other low carbon solutions but, without the connections found in community, the hands do not have the opportunity to work with the heart in a wider arena. The opportunity to collaborate with and serve others is the key to creating a civilised and low carbon society, one that ultimately can repair the damage our postindustrial growth society has so effectively done.

The value of private ritual My work as a healing practitioner and, earlier in my life, as a psychotherapist, have also shown me the value of private ritual. There are times when we simply do not want to share our pain but we need to mark it and encourage healing. Simple rituals performed on our own or with a close friend or partner can begin that healing process. It is never too late to try.

It therefore fascinated me that Jackie had written a book that not only celebrated the wonders of conception, birth, the naming of children – all events that you would expect frankly – she had written a book about the

other aspects of the birthing years. Here we can read about peoples’ experiences in adoption or simply not choosing to have children, even miscarriage, stillbirth and the abortion. I felt this was brave.

I also like her inclusive approach to ceremony and ritual. There is a rich sense that anyone can do this – whether we have a formal spiritual practice, follow a religion or believe nothing. This is achieved not by setting out ceremonies but by telling stories – we hear the author’s personal experiences and also the voices of the many people with whom she has spoken. This gives us a wonderfully rich variety of approaches and inspires us to be creative and weave together our own events.

had read to my two daughters and Tim Featherboy, from cover to cover. It is a beautifully written and moving story and we all shed tears together at the end. What familial catharsis! The atmosphere of that book has stayed with us all to this day. It was therefore with great pleasure that I met Nicky at the Birthrites book launch and Tim and I told her how much our family enjoyed her work. We were all moved.

There are times in life when a creative project has an energy of its own and a flow that takes it to fruition. It becomes a labour of love, literally. This book is just this for me, both a positive and inclusive contribution to the invisible but vital aspects of social sustainability and an aesthetic work that has nourished all involved. Many years ago, when my son was small we lived in a cottage deep in the Somerset countryside. Every day I would put James in a carrier on my back and the two of us, along with our dog, a collie called Blue, would go walking in the nearby woods. In one part of these woods my attention was often drawn to a holly tree whose overhanging branches formed a small dome about eight feet across. The earth beneath was bare, and there was a magic quality to this small space.

Anyone who walks in the countryside knows that there are special places which have an atmosphere of playful magic. Sometimes these spots are circular and bordered by a ring of fungi. In British folklore they are often called fairy rings. Underneath this holly tree was what looked and felt like a fairy ring, now overgrown with weeds and brambles.

Walking past it one spring day, I received the clear impression that I was being asked to clean it up. This impression remained with me every time I walked past it, but I never did anything about it.

Summer arrived, and I still did nothing. By Autumn I began to feel some remorse, even shame. Finally I took some clippers on our daily walk. James was just about able to sit up, so I propped him up with a twig in his hand and then crouched down to enter the fairy circle. I clipped out all the overhanging creepers and cleaned up the dome under the holly tree. I cleared the earth of all the old stones, branches and rubbish until the dome and circle looked perfect again. In fact there were two fairy circles, one about eight feet across and to its side another about two feet across. I had cleared up the physical reality to match the inner pattern.

It had taken me half an hour to do the job, and miraculously James, who was only sixteen months old, had sat there happily all the time.

Who or what, I wondered, had been entertaining him? I picked him up and we stopped for a few moments of meditation focusing on the fairy rings. I apologised for taking so long to clear them and for the fact that the job was not perfectly done, but hoped that it might in some way serve as a token that at least one representative of humanity was alive to the deva realm.

The next day I took James and Blue out again for our normal walk. Suddenly I became aware of a large amount of very playful activity in my energy field. The whole path and surrounding area were filled with chirping and dancing deva energy. It seemed that there was a procession waiting to lead us along the path towards the holly tree.

It was a procession of gratitude and celebration. My mind could not help but project images of little folk with acorn hats and wispy pink creatures with shimmering wings. Flowers and grass stalks were held up like flags, and they played strange little stringed instruments and

trumpets and drums. The whole wood seemed to resonate with the fun of the occasion.

When we reached the holly tree it seemed that there was a formal and rather solemn vote of thanks given to me, and I was embarrassed at their gratitude because I had delayed so long over such a simple task. But they were thankful for the human involvement.

They then dressed me in green tights with curling elfin shoes, a jerkin with tassels, special green gloves and a green hat. They dressed baby James in a similar outfit but did not give him a hat, so I asked why.

‘He will only receive a hat,’ they replied, ‘when he himself has done something for us. He has the eye for us, but he will have to actually do something as well.’

We watched as they performed circle dances in the fairy ring and tiny baby fairies danced in the smaller second circle. Later a procession led us down off the hill.

As James grew up I took him to different places with a magical atmosphere and talked to him about this event and about nature spirits in general. He grew up to be a tough young man, but he kept his energy field open and could sense them quite easily. When he was sixteen he came to me one day after a weekend visit to the countryside.

‘I have my green hat now,’ he told me, explaining that he had cleaned up another fairy ring and felt them come to him with gratitude.

them. They hover around discussing whether a cosmopolitan Western man could be able to work with them.

‘Oh yes I can,’ I say to them.

‘Prove it,’ they respond.

‘I have nothing to prove,’ I assert. ‘Look at what I’m wearing.’

And they see my green outfit which belongs to the elves and fairies of England, which of course was originally called Angel-Land, and these foreign nature spirits believe me. But they still like to see proof of cooperation – so I do something for them like a song or dance or blessing.

Of course there are people – especially sceptics, cynics and scientists – who would like me actually to prove everything. Unfortunately they cannot see my lovely elfin outfit. They could, however, see the certificate for my PhD in political psychology. I value my doctorate and my elf suit equally.
