Sunshine of the Soul

William Bloom Do you know The Gayatri? It is part of the Sanskrit scripture, the Rigveda, and is thought by many scholars to be the oldest known prayer in the world. There are many translations of it, but here is one of the better known: O Thou Who givest sustenance to the universe, From Whom all things proceed, To Whom all things return, Unveil to us the face of the true Spiritual Sun Hidden by a disc of golden Light That we may know the Truth And do our whole duty As we journey to Thy sacred feet.

At the heart of this beautiful hymn is the spiritual realisation that there is a soul that uses the Sun as its body, just as our souls incarnate through our bodies.

From the moment that I first heard The Gayatri, I was stunned by this insight, which I could feel to be true in every fibre of my body, that the Sun is not just the source of all our light and heat, but is also a vast being of consciousness.

Sometimes in my classes we do an exercise that builds on this realisation.

We go outside into landscape or a park and stand in an atmosphere of calm and mindfulness. We each of us then turn our attention to a particular tree and sense its roots, trunk and foliage.

Then, from the tops of our heads down to our feet, we open up our energy bodies so that we can truly feel and sense the presence and essence of the tree. Calm and open, we come into rapport with the spirit of the tree.

We then do the same exercise with the Sun. Calm and quiet, we open fully to its spirit. And then we turn our attention to something tiny, a blade of grass, and again open ourselves to its spirit.

Tree, Sun, blade of grass – all of these have their own spirit. One of the most important teachings of shamanic and pagan traditions is the respect and appreciation given to the spirits of the natural world – from that of a grain of sand to a stellar constellation. St

Sunshine of the Soul Francis of Assisi is a good Christian example of this too, befriending all nature’s creatures and conversing with Brother Sun and Sister Moon.

Saluting the soul In spiritual development, it is considered to be a major step forward in the growth of our consciousness and compassion when we recognise and respect the inner soul in all life. In many traditions we are asked, when we meet each other, to salute each others’ souls. In Hinduism it is traditional to greet someone by placing your hands prayerfully in the centre of your chest and then bowing, saying ‘Namaste’ or ‘Namaskara’. I greet your soul. In mystic Christianity, there is also this tradition of bowing to your companions and meeting the ‘Christ within’.

This practice of greeting someone’s soul can have practical benefits. If, for example, you are encountering someone whose behaviour or attitude you find challenging – perhaps your children, partner, parents, colleagues, neighbours – then to meet their souls may completely transform your attitude. In the language of A Course in Miracles [090847] you will have participated in a miracle simply by changing the way that you perceive them. You no longer perceive them as an irritating challenge who winds you up – but you meet and greet them as souls and manifestations of the cosmic Christ and Buddha consciousness.

But this can also give rise to a problem. This approach might be used to justify a value judgment, assessing the soul as good and beautiful, but valuing the manifest form and personality as being unworthy and less than valuable.

‘I love your soul, but I don’t love the rest of you.’

This kind of judgmental attitude is human and understandable, especially inside conflict and challenge, but it

misses the great spiritual lesson of unconditional love. Jesus loves everyone regardless of their state. The Buddha’s compassion has no limits. The Great Spirit of Mother Earth embraces and nurtures all of us.

I live in a house that contains dogs, cats, teenagers and untidy creative people (me) and sometimes I choose to meet friends in cafes rather than have them come to my home, because I would want to put in two hours tidying up before I felt okay about them visiting. But I like to believe if that if Jesus or Buddha or Mother Teresa or Nelson Mandela dropped by, they would not give a toss about the untidiness and would just love me and my home unconditionally. Indeed when spiritual teachers like Eileen Caddy or Ram Dass have visited, they were just completely relaxed and loving.

A process of grace and beauty Great saints and good people love both the soul and the form, the essence and the vehicle, without getting caught up in judgments about appearance. In this issue of Cygnus the featured book is The Warmth of the Heart Prevents Your Body from Rusting [210326]. It was also BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week earlier last month and I like it so much that I bought six copies of it for friends and relatives. It touches my heart precisely because it describes, in warm and inspiring prose, how to address the process of getting old with a grace that honours both internal and external beauty. The title incidentally comes from a song that the 100-year-old inhabitants of Okinawa Island in Japan sing together as they work in their communal gardens, working with heart and body.

This then is surely the important insight for all of us whatever our age, that we put into practice these two things at the same time. We greet the heart of all living beings – trees, people, blades of grass. And simultaneously we unconditionally love their forms too. Great saints and wonderful people display this generosity of spirit, modelling in a small way the virtually infinite blessing of The Gayatri’s ‘true Spiritual Sun hidden by a disc of golden Light’.

MARIE DE HENNEZEL I am convinced that if we surround ourselves with goodwill, and keep our hearts open and a ray of light shining deep within us, our old age, whatever it might be like, will have dignity and meaning.

Being with radiant, remarkable elderly people does me so much good that I think of them as my good-luck charms. Here is one of them. At almost one hundred years of age, Sister Emmanuelle is a nun known to all French people for her charisma and the twenty years she spent working in the save shanty towns of Cairo, combating 46%! poverty and illiteracy.

When I invited Sister Emmanuelle to talk to me about her old age, she looked me straight in the eye.

‘Well, you see, Marie, old age is the most beautiful period of my life. I feel as though I am rich from all the encounters I have experienced. Thousands and thousands of people have enriched me, so I have an immense store of capital, and feel responsible for passing on what I have received.’

As I pointed out to her that people view her as a wise woman, she retorted: ‘But I am not wise, Marie! I am a bit of a crank! I launch myself into adventures, and I’m unreasonable; I’ve always been like that.

I always did whatever I did, come hell or high water, though nobody approved. When I became a nun, everyone laughed at me, because I was a girl who enjoyed having fun, travelling, and dancing with good-looking boys. I was a flirt. Looking good was important to me. So people said to me: ‘What on earth are you going to do in a convent?’ The others didn’t see that, deep down in my heart, I had a desire for the absolute. I flirted, and I travelled, but where was that leading me? I felt that I was made for something that doesn’t pass away. I wasn’t then familiar with the words of Pascal: ‘Everything slips away from us and flees with an eternal flight.’ I sensed that everything was slipping out of my hands, and I wanted what doesn’t pass away: love, love that is free and true, for that is eternal.’

A greater freedom ‘So would you say that old age confers greater freedom?’ I asked.

‘Yes, I think so. Contacts are so much easier, and the affection that may seem ambiguous when one is younger, and which consequently one may not dare to experience fully, becomes a very clear human

dimension. I have very affectionate friendships, which are real and which give me a great deal. And also, when I see my life unfolding, I feel at peace. I made the right choices.’

I then asked her how she spends all her days. She replied: ‘I have visits from friends, people from the association that I founded and whose activities I follow closely. I don’t know why, but I have an enormous number of young friends, and I rediscover myself in them. Young people refresh my soul; it’s delicious! Did she sometimes feel lonely?

‘Never! You see, Marie, I believe deeply in the presence of a spirit of love that dwells within us. It is my home. I enjoy it constantly.’

‘Do you call this presence God?’ I ventured.

Her face lit up; suddenly, it was the face of a young girl. ‘I have two infinite sources of joy: God and mankind. I believe in God, and I believe in mankind. When I am alone, I pray. I always have my rosary within reach. I take into my prayers all the people who are in my heart, and I make an immense bouquet that I offer up from morn till night.

‘Lord, please bless all those I love!’ I am sure that God is listening to me, that He helps them to bear their lives, to surmount obstacles, to love.’

When I asked her what she would like to say to all those who are entering the third age and who are afraid of growing old, she concluded in a voice that was strikingly firm and gentle: ‘Do not be afraid! Old age is like a coronation. I have reached the summit of my life, and I see the world and other people with infinite tenderness. I feel them in my heart.

This affectionate contemplation gives me immense joy. For me, it is like champagne!

Joy bursts forth in my heart!

‘You, too, can dispense this joy around you. One becomes old the day one no longer believes in mankind and in the worth of every individual, whoever he or she may be. Take these words of a Muslim poet, which I am very fond of, and make them yours: ‘Break open the heart of man and there you will find a sun!’ But in order to do that, you must forget yourself a little, and take an interest in others!

‘Elderly people should realise that it is their mission to love. Whatever the state in which one grows old, one can look, smile, stretch out one’s hand, and bless. And that transfigures life.’

Lighting up old age It is faith and love that light up old age, and Sister Emmanuelle is an example of that. Her faith is rooted in her religious experience; other radiant elderly people, as we shall see, are not borne along by a religious faith, but quite simply by a faith in life and in mankind.

This last stage in our lives is an opportunity to continue enriching ourselves emotionally and spiritually, and to pass on our experience, our values, and our faith in mankind to younger generations. Through encounters with remarkable elderly people such as Sister Emanuelle, we know that it is possible to live to old age and retain our self esteem, experience moments of joy and happiness, and continue to learn from life. We can experience a fulfilling old age.

been clinically proven to halve the risk of depression in those who have suffered the most debilitating forms of the illness. It’s at least as effective as antidepressants, and has none of their downsides. In fact, it is so effective that it’s now one of the preferred treatments recommended by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

The MBCT technique revolves around a form of meditation that was little known in the West until recently. Mindfulness meditation is so beautifully simple that it can be used by the rest of us to reveal our innate joie de vivre. Not only is this

worthwhile in itself, but it can also prevent normal feelings of anxiety, stress and sadness from spiralling downwards into prolonged periods of unhappiness and exhaustion – or even serious clinical depression.

Focusing on the breath A typical meditation consists of focusing your full attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body (see the One-minute meditation, below). Focusing on each breath in this way allows you to observe your thoughts as they arise in your mind and, little by little, to let go of struggling with them. You come to realise that thoughts come and go of their own accord; that you are not your thoughts. You can watch as they appear in your mind, seemingly from thin air, and watch again as they disappear, like a soap bubble bursting. You come to the profound understanding that thoughts and feelings (including negative ones) are transient. They come and they go, and ultimately, you have a choice about whether to act on them or not.

Mindfulness is about observation without criticism; being compassionate with yourself. When unhappiness or stress hover overhead, rather than taking it all personally, you learn to treat them as if they were black clouds in the sky, and to observe them with friendly curiosity as they drift past. In essence, mindfulness allows you to catch negative thought patterns before they tip you into a downward spiral. It begins the process of putting you back in control of your life.

A One-minute Meditation 1 Sit erect in a straight-backed chair. If possible, bring your back a little way from the rear of the chair so that your spine is selfsupporting. Your feet can be flat on the floor. Close your eyes or lower your gaze.

2 Focus your attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body. Stay in touch with the different sensations of each in-breath and each out-breath. Observe the breath without looking for anything special to happen. There is no need to alter your breathing in any way.

3 After a while your mind may wander.

When you notice this, gently bring your attention back to your breath, without giving yourself a hard time – the act of realising that your mind has wandered and bringing your attention back without criticising yourself is central to the practice of mindfulness meditation.

4 Your mind may eventually become calm like a still pond – or it may not. Even if you get a sense of absolute stillness, it may only be fleeting. If you feel angry or exasperated, notice that this may be fleeting too.

Whatever happens, just allow it to be as it is.

5 After a minute, let your eyes open and take in the room again.

Words alone cannot describe the enormity of the presence of a whale as you swim next to it.

Living out on the ocean surrounded by them for a week was such a profound experience that was to alter my life forever. To be able to connect with the caretakers of the planet in such trusting proximity is a blessing beyond words.

On the third day of our journey with the whales, we were invited to share a beautiful encounter with a lovely mother and calf who seemed really content with human presence.

She explained that it was essential that we believed in the deeper concept of trust especially within ourselves. The outpouring of wisdom that followed had me wiping tears from my eyes.

I asked her if she would help us with the planetary healing and that perhaps she could guide me as to the best way to assist the global effort. I questioned her to see if she had any knowledge of the Lotus Heart. She told me that this cushions the planet and that we have to send as much love out to the planet and into ourselves, in order for the planet to be lowered into the protective divine love of the Lotus Heart. She advised me to visualize the earth being gently wrapped in the divinity and joy of the one love, symbolized by the lotus. I also wanted to question her about the Akashic records. I’d been told that the whales were the record keepers, and that they held the keys of all that is. She replied that each and everyone of us held the keys to the knowledge of the Akashic records. She said that the key was held in my heart and the way to activate the key was to send loving energy into my heart.

She likened me to a tiny ant that seemed to be rushing around, directionless. She went on to say that I perceived that I was separate and without purpose. I had to remember that, although I was tiny; I was a vital component of the colony; or part of the whole. She said that I

I thought about her words, comparing me to an ant and remembered that size for size it was capable of incredible feats of strength far beyond its diminutive stature. She was right in describing the way I had been feeling about myself. I’d been feeling isolated and disconnected from the whole, wondering what difference I could make to anything going on in the world. My former friends seemed to feel that I’d lost the plot. Anchoring the healing heart Next day, with the help of a few interested people, we visualized Gina’s vision of sending love into the earth. I explained her guided message of healing for the planet. When I think of the late Susy Smith, author of some thirty books about parapsychology and life after death, I think of James Taylor’s song ‘You’ve Got a Friend’. As it turned out, she was a friend not only to me but to all those seeking verification of life after death and of Spirit’s willingness to hep and guide us.

When I first met Susy, she was eighty-five years old and preparing to die. And as she was fond of saying, she couldn’t wait to die so she could prove to the world – including me – that she was still here.

However, I could never have foreseen, or even imagined, the creative and extraordinary proofs that Susy would subsequently provide from the other side about life after death and the active role that spirits can continue to play in our lives. As part of my personal quest to discover if Susy was still here and would continue to play a meaningful role in my life, she ended up revealing a new research protocol for exploring the apparent reality of Spirit and its possible benefits for all of us.

I continue to find it remarkable how what I do in my personal life – particularly related to Spirit – ends up seemingly informing and advancing my professional concerns. It could be because the mind or ego separates professional from personal as it does alive from deceased, while Spirit insists on one unified whole or continuum.

Susy was tough. If she needed to assert herself, she would. And she was not about to let me misinterpret her beliefs, whether they were valid or not. Since this was her persona while physically alive, there was good reason to anticipate that, if her consciousness did survive death, she would continue to assert herself in this way.

Furthermore, if anyone was going to insist, after they died, that I not misinterpret genuine communication from the other side as being explained by telepathy, or that mediums didn’t always read dead information from the vacuum of space, it would be Susy.

If Susy could find a way to prevent me from misinterpreting what was really occurring, she would do it. Her pragmatic approach is a model for everyone seeking the truth about afterlife contact and how not to fool one’s self.

Well aware that I was an orthodox agnostic, Susy knew it would take a lot of evidence – both in and out of the laboratory – for me to conclude that her consciousness survived and there is continued presence of Spirit in our lives. So Susy provided the evidence, in spades.

Surprise, surprise, I’m here Within twenty-four hours of Susy’s death – she was eighty-nine – on February 11, 2001, I began conducting blind readings to see if mediums could obtain evidence of Susy’s continued existence. These were not university investigations or experiments; they were private investigations conducted in my personal life, or selfscience, as I call them.

did not in and of themselves prove that Susy’s living consciousness continued after her death.

However, within a month or so of Susy’s passing, I received a surprise email from a then-unknown purported medium, whom I will call Joan. Joan claimed that she had been psychic since childhood, and though she strived to live a normal, non-psychic life most of the time, deceased people still showed up unannounced in her house every now and again.

She then reported that a deceased older woman named Susy was hanging around her house, and that Susy had important messages for me. Joan said she would like to learn what, if any of it, was correct.

I determined that more than eighty percent of it was not only factually accurate, but it sounded like Susy as well; and I realised that the specific content related directly to me could be separated into two categories.

The first I called ‘watching-over’ information.

This was about me in my present life, like ‘Susy shows me that you recently experienced X.’ The second type was what I termed ‘predictive’ information, pertaining to me in the future, like ‘Susy is showing me that in a few days Y will happen to you.’

I proposed to Joan that we conduct an informal investigation with me acting as a private person, who happened to approach his person-

al life as a scientist, and who wanted to know whether this was Susy or not.

Someone watching over me?

I suggested that five mornings a week, Joan would agree to contact Susy and ask her two questions: 1) What had Susy witnessed as happening to me in the previous twenty-four hours – the watching-over information. 2) What did Susy foresee happening to me in the upcoming twenty-four hours – the predictive information.

Joan would then email the information she believed she had received from Susy, then I would score it. Since most turned out to be ‘watching-over’, we focused our attention on it.

I decided that if I purposely did novel things and experienced rare events and Joan reported these activities supposedly via Susy, this kind of unique reporting could be meaningful. I decided to begin the watching-over experiment by watching a novel movie in a novel way.

I watched the baseball movie Field of Dreams – note that I rarely watch baseball – decided to order in Chinese, something I hadn’t done for two or three years, then watched the movie and ate my Chinese dinner in bed – three things I have never done together.

The following morning I read the email from Joan: ‘Susy is showing me something about baseball; you were watching baseball last night.

Susy is showing me that you are eating some kind of foreign food.’

What came next strongly captured my attention: ‘I don’t understand this, but Susy shows me that you are eating while reclining. Does that make any sense?’

We continued our personal exploration five days a week for more than two months, and the information averaged around eighty percent accuracy. Sometimes it was truly uncanny, especially when predictive information would show up in the form of warnings. One morning Joan wrote that Susy claimed that I needed to check the tyres on my car. I did not act upon her purported request. Later that afternoon, I discovered in my laboratory’s parking lot that my car had a flat tyre. I decided to have all four tyres replaced.

All told, it seemed reasonable to conclude that at least something psychic was transpiring.

However, as reliable and dramatic as this evidence was, it was not by itself sufficient evidence to conclude that Susy was actually watching over me and sometimes giving me useful warnings.

It was possible that Joan was merely being very psychic, engaged in remote viewing as well as precognition – the ability to foresee future events. However, what happened next in this particular self-science venue was beyond my wildest imagination. In fact, it ultimately became a transformative discovery, provided by, of all people the deceased but spiritually alive Susy Smith, a spirit interloper par excellence...

A renewed sense of love And the next month he wrote to me: ‘Actually things have gone smoothly over the last month, and I recognize it is because of my blessing everyone all day and night, no matter what they have done to me. Yes, things are a lot easier here, not because the officers have changed, but because my outlook has changed. I look at things with a renewed sense of love and understanding. I now try to look for the good and perfection in all of God’s children, even those that hate me, because God made us all perfect.

There are many different paths and ways to experience that connection, but essentially spirituality is the feeling of awareness and connection with the divine, and spiritual practices are all ways of striving to strengthen that awareness and connection.

Becoming aware of Oneness Spirituality is looking into the depths of life within us and around us and finding Oneness there. This sense of Oneness causes us to make connections between all that is.

Spirituality is the process of becoming aware of that Oneness and its manifestations. How do we become more aware of this deeper reality? We need to value our neighbour and ourselves, we need to cherish the earth and we need to work towards a more just and peaceful world.

June Pettitt Stay in the present moment I use the word ‘spirituality’ to denote an awareness of the quality that joins me to everyone and everything. An awareness of the oneness of creation, of love, of all.

Far beyond the idea of religion, which can be a separative worldly tool, I think spirituality is the love that once discovered within, is seen without, and everywhere. It is what will finally put an end to the cruel and petty estrangements encountered everwhere in our dream of time and space.

The only way I seem able to stay ‘in the Spirit’ is to stay in the present moment, and love what is. Last week I was given such a gift by a little girl, a 3 year old friend of my granddaughter, as I sat outside her house waiting impatiently for a bus whose late arrival threatened to ruin my plans for the day. She appeared from the house, still wearing her pink pyjamas, and picked me a little bunch of wildflowers from the garden. One by one she handed them to me, and I marvelled at their beauty of colour, form, and delicacy.
