At the turn of another year, many people start planning and coming up with new intentions and objectives. At the same time, and connected to this, the idea of a journey has become firmly lodged in my head. I was watching a bit of the final of Strictly Come Dancing and counted the number of times contestants mentioned having been on a journey. (There were many.) It has become a cliché but you can also understand what people mean, and it’s a helpful way of seeing things. The journey is a specific period when there’s intention but when our circumstances are much changed and there’s an opportunity to get out of a familiar mindset.

Much of the time I think that people are fortunate to be able to go on a challenging but safe journey like that, where they have the option of going back to their “old” life afterwards, whatever that means. It’s much harder for others though who are forced into taking a more challenging journey that has no pre-arranged ending and which potentially can cause them pain and suffering, like one that involves illness, death or major financial insecurity. It can be transformative and we can be better people at the end of

one of these journeys, but that’s also uncertain. At least the idea of a journey can help you make sense of things and perhaps feel better about the suffering.

I love to read books about people’s lives especially when the narrative involves a spiritual journey. I am reading one now, but I won’t say what it is because I don’t think it’s very good! I am still enjoying reading it though. People awaken to the spiritual life, go and live in a commune of some kind, meet another teacher and change direction, make a few mistakes and then have a breakthrough that means they can write a book about themselves because a consensus of people agree that this life has been significant enough. Books like this can be inspirational and encouraging.

My journey has covered a lot of physical places and I am privileged to have travelled a lot. My spiritual journey? Not so sure. Nothing that would get me published. A lot of false starts and cul-de-sacs. I have been to see a lot of great teachers talking, like Ram Dass, Caroline Myss and Deepak Chopra, but they are the interesting ones, not me.

Being honest, it feels like I am at the end of another rubbish year, the third in a row involving Covid, weird climate, war and economic near-disaster. But a lot of that is also a reality in my head; it’s a way of seeing, and you could say that it’s partly my attitude that is making everything seem so miserable. I was thinking just yesterday: maybe I need to stop being so grumpy…

As I said at the beginning, this time at the turning of the year is one for goals, plans and objectives, and I think that one of being more cheerful might be a start! Often making new year’s resolutions is just a reflex thing but then nothing happens when we don’t stick to them. It’s just “life”. It feels though as if things have changed and that all the things that were throwaway and routine have the potential now to be much more. Also, outward conditions are different and there’s a huge potential for a new world, because everything is more

fluid and a lot of old preconceptions have gone. We might not create the ideal world we all want to see but, through our efforts, we might be able to get closer to it.

I really hope that now my journey will be different. Not all of us in Cygnus are in the same position but I hope many of us can now start on new journeys and that we can truly become more realised and feel that we are being our best selves. Or at the very least that we are doing the best we can. And along with that we will contribute to making the world a better place. The sun is shining on the road ahead – let’s put our bag on our back and start walking.

“The things that were throwaway and routine have the potential now to be much more”

For a long time we’ve shared narratives to make sense of our lives and to comprehend the entire Cosmos and how it underpins and frames our perceptions of the nature of reality. Over the last four centuries, our current collective narrative has become a paradigm of secular science, embracing a solely materialistic reality and widespread apparent separation.

Now, however, its presumptions are incapable of encompassing scientific breakthroughs. These require a radical new and expanded understanding which might enable an emergent and unitive narrative of the unified nature of reality to emerge.

The progress of materialistic science began four centuries ago with a book that changed the world. De Augmentis Scientiarum by Francis Bacon (also purported by some researchers to be Shakespeare) was intended to be revolutionary and it succeeded in that aim. Introducing what he called the scientific method, it proposed experiments that could be replicated and validated by other investigators. Crucially, it urged us to follow the evidence, wherever it led.

Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet: “There are more things in Heaven and Earth Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy”. I believe Bacon intended his “scientific method” to unfold and follow the evidence, as a journey of exploratory revelation of the divine in its role as the fundamental nature of reality.

Yet omissions in translations, and the secular views of those who followed, distorted this original intention, leaving this methodology to be applied within a progressively constrained and materialistic worldview.

The strength of Bacon’s scientific method though is to continue to follow the evidence. In doing so, we are now at threshold of integrating Heaven and Earth and potentially revolutionising our perception of the world and ourselves.

Wide-ranging scientific breakthroughs at all scales of existence are all now coming to the same conclusion: that the appearance of our Universe arises from deeper non-physical

Our Conscious Planet and Us

realms of causation, as digitized and meaningful information, pixelated at the most minute scale of existence. And its in-formed reality manifests holographically, with its innate and multidimensional wholeness expressed in the nested and relational complexity of its differentiated and diverse parts. Fundamentally, discoveries are revealing that mind and consciousness aren’t something we have but what we and the whole world actually are. Its emergent cosmology is of an essentially living and evolutionary Universe, beginning 13.8 billion years ago not in the implied chaos of a Big Bang but as an incredibly ordered and fine-tuned first moment of an ongoing Big Breath. As space has since expanded and time flowed forward, our entire Universe meaningfully and purposefully exists TO evolve: from

simplicity to complexity and diversity, with ever greater levels of individuated and collective self-expression, selfawareness and interdependence.

Over the last 4 billion years, this evolutionary impulse has been embodied in our planetary home, Gaia. Pulsed, not by passive continuity, but proactively by change and challenge, Gaia’s emergence has not only survived but flourished; the collaborative cycles of her entirely interdependent gaiasphere continuing to provide a breathable atmosphere, liquid water, resource-rich land, and habitable climate to sustain and nurture the evolutionary complexity of her organic children.

Alongside and beyond intellect, however, Gaia has progressively nurtured empathy and emotional attachments. Bacteria, insects and fish work together to look after others of their communities, especially the vulnerable. And in the altruism of rats and monkeys, the grieving of elephants not only for their own kin but for a human carer, the self-sacrifice of a human stranger, and the protection of other species by humpback whales from orcas, the circles of care further expand as spirals of compassion.

Following the evidence to here and now extends to us an existential choice and opportunity, to wake up and realise that we’re inseparable from each other, from Gaia and from the whole world. It invites us to realise that we are an integral part of Gaia’s own evolutionary progress and purpose. And it offers us the authentic opportunity and empowerment to remember who we really are and who we can evolve to become.

THE STORY OF GAIA by Jude Currivan

This is the latest book from the popular Cygnus author Jude Currivan, who combines a rigorous scientific discipline with long-term spiritual commitment. In this work she continues her exploration of how the Universe, our planet, ourselves, and everything in existence has inherent meaning and evolutionary purpose and how both the Universe and our Earth can be considered living beings. The joy of Currivan’s writing is that she uses scientific, cultural and consciousness data to inform her narrative, but she is also a storyteller and in her writings she brings

This latest book by the author of Cygnus titles Animal Soul Contracts and Soul Healing with our Animal Companions is another tribute to the animals in our lives and how they are here to assist us. This time Tammy highlights the 5D consciousness they all possess and how they are lightworkers involved in raising the planetary vibration. Of course the book is full of heartwarming stories and many lovely photographs of the animals included. Unsurprisingly the animals are all cats, dogs and horses, along with a turtle plus Murray the Rabbit. The book includes exercises and meditations. The stories are lovely and made me smile and it coaxes us to look at our pets and other animals around us and perhaps acknowledge that there is more to them and what they are thinking and doing than we might imagine.

This is a new book by the author of Child of the Cosmos. As it’s published by Temple Lodge, it is guided by the principles of Rudolf Steiner’s teachings and it refers a lot to elemental beings and the Christ. The book explores the interplay between humanity and the earth we live on, including other animals. Through observation the author reveals ways in which we can relate to nature. Likewise through looking at nature and learning from it, we are brought back to our own being, and as the author says, deep encounters with nature thus become self-encounters. Founded on first-hand observation, this book shows a deep respect for life’s hidden aspects, as well as their significance for our personal growth.

PET PSYCHIC by Beth Lee-Crowther

It doesn’t feel outrageous to say that cats and dogs have psychic powers. I often feel that my cat can read me very easily: well, with this book the communication can flow in both directions and we can read them too. It feels like this title has everything you will ever need to be able to get psychic messages from your pet, which will be great for forming closer bonds with them. Plus there are other more basic benefits from this, because you will be able to support them when they have problems, and you will get help trying to find them should they get lost. There are many exercises in the book that will help you hone your skills, with pet photos to focus on and get readings from. Beth talks a lot about the theory behind this as well. Finally the book includes plenty of stories and anecdotes. Highly recommended.

This lovely book is written in diary form as naturalist and conservationist Nick Acheson observes different species of geese as they stop off in Norfolk on their migrations. It turns out to be a beautiful and constructive way of passing your time during a pandemic. He ends up cycling 1200 miles criss-crossing the county on his old bike, which is the exact distance of the pinkfoot’s migration to Iceland. It’s an expression of his love for nature and just as much of his love for his native county, and as such it’s a very uplifting book as we track the author’s appreciation of the simple, slow and unglamorous things in life. The book is full of stories from history, personal anecdotes and encounters with people whose lives are also involved with geese and other wildfowl. It’s a quiet classic. 240pp, 229 x 153 mm, Hardback, 2023, RRP £18.99

You may have connected with Peter Owen-Jones from his appearances in several award-winning documentaries on television. He continues to practise as a priest in East Sussex, and is also both an ecological thinker and a champion of ethics, and as such, a powerful voice. This pocket-sized paperback contains 18 meditations on our relationship with nature and how to reconnect with its voice. Short and luminous, the writings are a work of profound imagination and contain intense, urgent messages reminding us of the need to be humble in all things and to learn from nature. They are illustrated with spare, charcoal drawings by Jerry Shearing which also make you stop and think. I think that this is a book to carry with you always, one to turn to when feeling overwhelmed by the issues of modern life. 92pp, 174 x 124 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £10.99

GLEE by Cheryl Rickman

It’s been dawning on humanity over recent years how important trees are to us. That’s not just to our survival and to keeping the planet inhabitable, but also to our mental health and everyday happiness. This is quite a commercial book that would make a good gift, and it’s well-packaged and full of colour photos. It describes all the ways that trees care for us and likewise all the ways we can care for trees. The obvious possibilities the book discusses are how we can be more like trees and how being amongst trees can calm us and make us more fulfilled. It goes beyond that with suggestions of how we can befriend trees and play games around trees. Finally it’s very practical in the ways it proposes for us to help trees, and to protect them as individuals and collectively, including a very specific resources section. 192pp, 234 x 173 mm, Hardback, 2022, RRP £16.99 ❖ Code: 320459 ❖ Non-Member Price: £14.43 ❖ Member Price: £12.99

Welcome to the Raise Your Vibration Oracle Guidebook!

Congratulations on arriving here, for whether you realize it or not, you are making the choice to increase positive energy for yourself, those around you, and ultimately the world.

This oracle deck is a spiritual tool that is intended to support you in raising your energy, your “vibes,” and living an elevated life. Each card has a simple but powerful message to inspire positive choices and also to offer an opportunity for reflection, so

you can see the internal shifts you are making on your journey.

To raise your vibration is to make a conscious choice. It’s to come to the realization that every one of your actions, non-actions, choices, and feelings is in some way affecting the whole, and your daily life is ultimately affecting the unfoldment of your destiny, either taking you closer to your purpose or further from it.

On a spiritual level, each card works as a mirror, revealing information that already resides within your own consciousness.

The book of Raise Your Vibration has just been reissued and here is a card deck to accompany it. Kyle is of course one of our most popular authors. The cards are written and illustrated in an upbeat and contemporary style and you can tune in to their frequency to cultivate high-vibe spiritual practices and align your energy with living a heart-centred life. With 11 themes such as Ignite, Express, Activate and Manifest, all the cards align with one of the chakras (including four higher chakras: Earth Star, Gaia Gateway, Soul Star and Stellar Gateway) to offer you guidance for any challenge. You’ll learn to trust in the support and love from the Universe, feel confident in your personal practice and attract positivity, miracles and joy into your life. Through this deck, Kyle shows you how to discover your true potential, elevate your vibration and create an incredible life.

Archangel Michael is seen as the most active of the great Archangels and he is characterised by the sword he carries. He is not aggressive or militaristic though. Here are 44 cards that each carry a confident and dynamic message from Michael: for example Archangel Michael is With You Now, Change is Coming and Put Your Creative Energy into Action. On the back is a lovely design made up of two swords, a set of wings and a butterfly at its heart, and on the front – with the message – is a dynamic and striking image, rarely of Michael himself, but always characterised by a signature sapphire blue. Radleigh is Hay House’s heir to Doreen Virtue and correspondingly it’s a very New Age deck in its approach. It’s amazingly uplifting and the substantial booklet inside is full of more words of guidance from Michael. 44 full-colour cards and a 120-page booklet, 2022, RRP £17.99 ❖ Code: 320408

DRUID WISDOM by Andres Engracia

This is a beautiful and well-produced deck. The 49 cards are thick, strong and edged with gold and the book of guidance included is full-colour inside. There are 13 Archetypal Medicine Women cards, to go with the 13 moons, and then there are 3 suits: Gifts of the Feminine, Totem/Allied Spirits and Medicine Action cards. I hope you can now see the different ways the cards can work together, almost as a shamanic course in healing. The deck as a whole pays tribute to the way of the Great Goddess, and the images on the cards range from goddess images to power animals to seasons, trees and mandalas. The book has many suggestions on spreads and other ways to use the cards, but they seem so powerful to me that I would suggest you could just dive in and let the cards guide you.

This deck is very similar to Avalon Magic, a previous deck we carried from Rockpool Publishing. It’s the same small thin format with 40 cards inside an elegant box that seals magnetically. Likewise again the cards have a picture on one side and written advice on the other, based on the picture. This time the image is a photograph, taken by the author on his solitary wanderings, seemingly mostly in the British Isles. I recognise Stonehenge and the Giant’s Causeway, and there are also castles, moors and many other standing stones. On the back is a symbol or sigil, a title like The Winding Trail, Mirror Visions or King’s Landing, a short inspirational statement and finally a piece of direct advice, like Carry Rose Quartz for Respect and Love and Place Pink Opal by the Bed for Peace and Calm. 40 colour cards, 2022, RRP £10.00

So this is where we begin: by acknowledging that our times confront us with realities that are painful to face, difficult to take in, and confusing to live with. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling anxious, defeated, or in despair.

There’s something else we’d like to bring in alongside this difficult starting point. It is a recognition that when we’re at our most exasperated, we can sometimes surprise ourselves. We might discover strengths we never knew we had or experience degrees of aliveness we’d not even suspected were available to us. This is a time to reach out and find new allies, as well as to discard forms of thinking and behavior that have led us astray. In a process known as adversity activated development, our very act of facing the mess we’re in can help us discover a more enlivening sense of what our lives are about, what we’re here to do, and what we’re truly capable of.

Do you hope this will happen for you? Or that you might play a role in helping this happen for others? If so, we invite you to join us in our journey. Together we will explore how we can access unexpected resilience and creative power, not just to face the mess we’re in, but also to play our part in doing something about it.

What Is Active Hope?

Whatever situation we encounter, we can choose our response. When facing overwhelming challenges, we might feel that our actions don’t count for much. Yet the kind of responses we make and the degree to which we believe they count are shaped by the way we think and feel about hope. Here’s an example.

Jane cared deeply about the world and was horrified by what she saw happening. She regarded human beings as a lost cause, as so stuck in our destructive ways that she believed the complete wrecking of our world was inevitable. “What’s the point of doing anything if it won’t change what we’re heading for?” she asked.

The word hope has two different meanings. The first, which we’ve

An Introduction to Active Hope

touched on already, involves hopefulness, where our preferred outcome seems reasonably likely to happen. But if we require this kind of hope before we commit ourselves to an action, our response gets blocked in areas where we don’t rate our chances well. This is what happened for Jane – she felt so hopeless she didn’t see the point of even trying to change things.

The second meaning is about desire. When Jane was asked what she’d like to have happen in our world, without hesitation she described the future

she hoped for, the kind of world she longed for so much it hurt. It is this kind of hope that starts our journey – knowing what we hope for and what we ’d like, or love, to have happen. It is what we do with this hope that really makes the difference. Passive hope is about waiting for external agencies to bring about what we desire.

Active Hope is about becoming active participants in the process of moving toward our hopes and, where we can, realizing them.

Active Hope is a practice. Like tai chi or gardening, it is something we do rather than have. It is a process we can apply to any situation, and it involves three key steps. First, we start from where we are by taking in a clear view of reality, acknowledging what we see and how we feel. Second, we identify what we hope for in terms of the direction we’d like things to move in or the values we’d like to see expressed. And third, we take steps to move ourselves or our situation in that direction.

Since Active Hope doesn’t require our optimism, we can apply it even in areas where we feel hopeless. The guiding impetus is intention; we choose what we aim to bring about, act for, or express. Rather than weighing our chances and proceeding only when we feel hopeful, we focus on our intention and let it be our guide.

The challenges we face can be difficult even to think about. Climate change, political polarisation and economic upheaval together create a planetary emergency of overwhelming proportions. Active Hope shows us how to strengthen our capacity to face this crisis so that we can respond with unexpected resilience and creative power. Drawing on decades of teaching an empowerment approach known as the Work That Reconnects, the authors guide us through a transformational process informed by mythic journeys, modern psychology and holistic science. This process equips us with tools to face the mess we’re in and play our role in the collective transition, or Great Turning, to a life-sustaining society. First published in 2012, this was one of the first books that tried to tackle this Dark Night of the Soul for humanity. 288pp, 216 x 140 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £16.99 ❖ Code: 320461 ❖ Non-Member Price: £14.43 ❖ Member Price: £12.99

In this short book Peter, who’s a medical doctor, takes the reader through various spiritual techniques that will help them achieve their goals in life. Clairview is primarily an Anthroposophical publisher and these teachings do come from that tradition with a lot of Rosicrucian aspects as well: the author believes that Rudolf Steiner was initiated by Christian Rosenkreuz, the legendary founder of Rosicrucianism. The techniques are on one level based on regular psychology and involve relaxation and working with your thoughts but they are also quite magical and include mantras and visualisations of different symbols. You probably have to be sympathetic to the Steiner teachings to get the most out of this book. However it’s not long and there will be some useful exercises to take away.

The subtitle here is Non-Dual Principles of Living. It’s a profound exploration of ordinary reality from the point of view of a poet and of a human being who’s had a lifetime of spiritual inquiry. He has been training in Zen, Tai Chi and many other traditions since 1966 and now he shares the fruits of all his searching. The book is full of stories and anecdotes from his own life, moments of revelation that occur both in rarefied and in more mundane settings. It’s a rigorous but not difficult text and it’s full of learning opportunities for us. We can use his pointings as a guide for our own lives so that we too can transcend and transform the sometimes challenging ordinary stuff. It seems to be primarily driven by what he has learned from Buddhism; however there are references to other mystical traditions. 288pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2023, RRP £17.99

If you, or someone you know, are embarking on the spiritual path, then this book is highly recommended, and its subtitle, A Mighty Companion on the Spiritual Awakening Journey, brilliantly sums up its content and the role it will play in your own process. Unlike some of the other titles in this field that are muddled and bewildering, this work is very well structured, extremely insightful and best of all, an easy read with light-hearted and fun elements that make you want to try harder and go further. Because the author has been on the same journey, she has first hand experience of what to expect, the highs and the lows, the clinging and the letting go. Her support gives much needed reassurance that you are not odd, that all the strange things happening to you are a normal part of your growth, and most importantly that life will get better.

AT WORK IN THE RUINS by Dougald Hine

This is a very challenging book about science, climate change and pandemics. It asks what we can do about these things. What we can expect science to do. And what will happen if we seemingly allow science to solve all these problems for us. Dougald is a former BBC journalist and a philosopher and social thinker. These times have been very strange for everybody and there’s a sense in which we all need to take stock. How though do we get objectivity on this and stop wandering in the dark? I can’t say this any better than to quote the author: “Modernity has gone round the world making no end of scars. Under its spell, we think the world is trying to kill us, because we have forgotten that dying is part of what we are here for and have come to treat it as an error in need of correction.” I have to stress, the issues in this book are vast but it’s not difficult to read. 224pp, 216 x 140 mm, Hardback, 2023, RRP £22.00 ❖ Code: 320402 ❖ Non-Member Price: £17.76 ❖ Member Price: £15.99

This is an interesting take on shadow work showing us how our buried histories and childhood fears take shape in our feelings and phobias around animals. By giving us a better understanding of the animals we dislike or fear, the author hopes to help us learn more about what we unconsciously fear and dislike in ourselves, and in this book she provides a rich and detailed history of the most common fear-triggering animals. More than that, she makes us examine our relationship with these animals and use this knowledge to work on ourselves. By presenting an animal-centred guide to shadow work, Brunke has revealed how shadow animals protect and advise, challenge and encourage, inspire and offer support to the spiritual adventure of enlightenment as we awaken to who we really are.

REVIEWS – Life in all its Variety

It is wonderful to be asked by the Cygnus Review to share some reflections with you at the close of the year as we move towards the turning of the light. I find myself reflecting a great deal at the moment, as so many of us are, on our current times. I can’t help but keep coming back to a little diamond of a feeling, more than a thought, rooted in the sense of profound gratitude for anyone with a spiritual practice or an eye towards a more profound way of life at this time, from Zen to Tarot and all points between. However the work calls us, it is something to be grateful for.

We can all feel that it is a dark and strange time on the planet, and it’s not just the run-up to the Solstice: something deeper is shifting. Yet as I’ve been fortunate to tour around quite a bit of the country this year, leading day retreats and giving talks around my newest book Signposts of the Spiritual Journey, I have found that the same questions and comments keep coming to light. What’s going on? And when will we come through this? Signposts is an invitation to meet our particular path with greater meaning and see how we can transcend the blockages that often get in our way. All my work is about this and how we work as human beings. The book is meant as a space of comfort, support and inspiration as you meet things in your own sweet way.

There are two different ways we meet our calling if we are people whose hearts lean towards the spiritual. The first, and most usual, is because we hope that it will add something to us or that we might be saved from pain by engaging with the things we are drawn towards. The second is to meet what we are drawn towards with authenticity, awareness, and love. We all know the difference, but moving from the first to the second is still a

Your ordinary heart is enough

gradual process. The authentic way is the one that holds our answer to what is going on in the world, but of course, the difficulty and the beauty we all must face is that it is so easy to look at the world and others with this awareness, but trickier to look at ourselves and our own actions and contributions. But we need not worry, every authentic step leads us a little more into the light, and the more light we allow, the more light there is.

Here is the thing - You are the light! You are the answer this world needs. When we allow the motion of authenticity, awareness, and love to carry us forward and begin to lay

out the path for us right here in this very moment, you don’t need to be someone other than you are. Just your ordinary lovely heart is enough. When we express our too human hearts, it’s then just us. We no longer try to trick life and life can get on side with us. I’ve always felt this was the true secret of what we call ‘manifesting’.

What I sense, as we move through this dark period, is that something is being born through us, and it is inviting us to show up in our practices and consciousness and to move into making the world rather than finding sanctuary from the world. The old ways are unwinding, so the steady ground that is what is true in us is asking to be expressed more than ever. How does that saying of our old friend Ram Dass go? We are all just walking each other home.

A deep bow to you at the turning of the light. Bless this wonderful community of Cygnus readers, you are a very special group of people.

With gratitude and love John Siddique

‘The more light we allow, the more light there is.’

Mindfulness is a word much in use these days. We are constantly reminded that it is the doorway to a better life, but trying to achieve it can still be a struggle. Rose Elliot has been well known for decades as a pioneer of vegetarian cooking, but here she uses her skill for writing clear and practical explanations to guide us towards achieving mindfulness through our breathing. The Buddha taught simple breathing exercises, so using the breath to assist focus and transform a mindfulness practice is nothing new. Breathing is far more than just air entering and leaving the body, it can be a powerful tool for developing self awareness, and no special equipment or study is required, just guidance towards recognising we already have all we need. A small simple book but something to treasure.

Having said that this legendary dialogue was over, in August 2016 bestselling author Neale Donald Walsch was awakened again by a voice in the night. What he was told he could not keep silent about and consequently here is the unexpected 4th volume of this bestselling series, where Walsch attends very closely to that voice that comes from within and the amazing revelations it delivers. Whatever our feelings about its origins, we must look coolly at what the voice says, and for myself, I can say that these are words worth reading. These are powerful teachings, which offer a way out of a dead-end existence and a hollow experience on earth where we risk not fulfilling our destiny.

One of the best and most practical healing manuals was republished a few years ago with extra added material. This includes a foreword by Anna Parkinson, an extra appendix and a full-colour chakra reference chart. In 1975 Martin Brofman healed himself of terminal cancer in his spinal cord, and then wanted to share his technique with the world. It’s a simple approach that combines Western psychology and the Eastern chakra system. The book is richly illustrated and patiently lays out every aspect of his approach. The author explains how healing the symptom needs to involve not only releasing the tension on the physical level, but also letting go of the stressful way of interacting with the environment. Thus, the process of healing always implies a process of transformation. When we recognise the divine and the healing potential in all of us, anything CAN be healed.

GIFT OF AN ANGEL by Wendy Erlick

There’s a great quotation from renowned author Cilla Conway on this book, and it sums up my feelings as well: “I don’t normally read books on angels as I find many of them too saccharine, but I found Wendy Erlick’s book direct, authentic and sometimes very moving”. This gets it exactly right: it’s down to earth, everyday and for that very reason very inspiring. A spiritual gift like this can descend on any of us at any time, and her story is well-told and compelling, but the account becomes even more useful in the second half of the book when she goes into detail about her training and shows us how we too can get in touch with invisible beings. She discusses the different angels and what they specialise in and how we can work with them, but all this in a very straightforward and refreshingly non-ethereal way. 184pp, 216 x 141 mm, Paperback, 2016, RRP £10.99 ❖ Code: 260225 ❖ Non-Member Price: £8.87 ❖ Member Price: £7.99

This has been a Cygnus bestseller in both hardback and paperback. Dr Dispenza offers a set of tools that allows ordinary people to reach extraordinary states of being. He brings together research in neuroscience, epigenetics, psycho-neuroimmunology, neurocardiology, electro-magnetism, and quantum physics to show how human transformation and change take place and what they mean to our lives. With glowing reviews from authors like Lynne McTaggart (The Power of Eight) and Tony Robbins (Unshakable), this title is truly revolutionary and life-changing. Dispenza’s easy-to-understand and compassionate style will help you rewire your brain and recondition the body to make lasting change. ACID WATCHER DIET by Dr Jonathan Aviv

Do you suffer from abdominal bloating; a chronic, nagging cough or sore throat; postnasal drip; a feeling of a lump in the back of your throat; allergies; or shortness of breath? If so, odds are that you are experiencing acid reflux without recognizing its silent symptoms, which can lead to serious long-term health problems. Dr Jonathan Aviv, a leading authority on the diagnosis and treatment of acid reflux disease, helps readers identify those often misunderstood symptoms while providing a proven solution for reducing wholebody acid damage quickly and easily. His 28-day programme is part of a two-phase eating plan, with a healthy balance of both macronutrients (proteins, carbs and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and antioxidants), that works to immediately neutralise acid and relieve the inflammation at the root of acid reflux.

A Guide to Starting a Cygnus Café

We know that we have many members who are interested in starting Cygnus Cafés in their community, and that they have questions, both about how to get started and also how they want their group to run. Below is a mini-guide to running a Cygnus Café to give you a taste of what you can expect – if you would like to start your own Café please do get in touch.

❖ The starting point for setting up a group is the purpose of a Cygnus Café, and that is creating a space for you to meet people of like mind in your own locality. Nowadays it is often the case that you might find you can only get so far by yourself using a book. Sometimes it can be a great help on your spiritual journey to share issues that feel unresolved, with others of like heart.

❖ Most of our groups run in what we would call an unstructured way, they have no agenda and allow the magic of the moment to provide the topics spontaneously, depending on who wishes to share their recently experienced insights or share their current concerns of the heart.

❖ When getting down to practicalities the first thing you need is a space, generally meetings are held in members’ homes or quiet rooms in cafés or community spaces. Any room hire costs etc. are shared by the participants on a donation basis. We advise avoiding noisy venues or spaces that have no door, as this helps a great deal. You need a safe space where you know you will not be interrupted.

❖ When thinking about when and how often to hold your meetings, consider the needs of the group when deciding what is best for (most of) you. Some groups choose mornings, others evenings, some even choose a weekend. Larger groups sometimes choose to have two meetings in a month, once in the evening and once in the morning, to match the different lifestyles. Most meeting last for around 2 hours and our advice is to stick to the same day every month, week or fortnight to allow people to organise their diaries.

❖ Many groups take a little while to gain momentum, and this is normal. We suggest you avoid the temptation of trying to find a perfect arrangement.

❖ For meeting support you can contact Vicky Hartley at Cygnus on vicky@

❖ Setting up for the meeting we suggest that the host prepares the room in the most appropriate way, arranging the seating so that everyone has eye-to-eye contact. Meetings generally begin with everyone taking turns to say their name and where they are from and, if they wish, a mention about something they may want to talk about later.

❖ Many groups have found it very helpful to keep the level of the meeting at a higher level by setting the intention of the group to the highest good at the beginning of the meeting. So that, whatever happens, the highest good may come out of it.

❖ Gradually most groups begin to observe how Cygnus Cafés can grow in depth as participants feel more comfortable and they can share their vulnerabilities and “soft spots”. This gives others the confidence to share their concerns or doubts.

This is an amazing and very different deck and card set. The artist has chosen to honour lots of obscure, seemingly awkward, but immensely loveable animals with beautiful portraits and then affirmations or statements linked with those animals or inspired by the poses they are striking. The animals include warthogs, cockroaches, dung beetles, aye-ayes, jellyfish and axolotls. The images are charming and the affirmations fairly simple, like You Are More Resilient Than You Think and Your Voice Has Power. You would pick a card to help you in a situation and to get intuitive help on which course of action to take. But when the message comes from such charming and gutsy creatures, it makes you smile and I think it becomes even more encouraging.

This would make a great gift.

This set of cards allies the powers of minerals and plants; just like gemstones, essential oils work on an energetic level to rebalance us spiritually, mentally, and emotionally and offer many physiological benefits. Each card shows an essential oil on one side with its related gemstone on the other and the detailed booklet describes therapeutic properties and safety precautions as well as how the gemstone relates to the use of the oil. The cards are colour-coded and divided into six groups: Focus, Grounding, and Protection; Health and Well-Being; Love, Friendship, and Romance; Money, Creativity, and Motivation; Happiness and Self-Confidence; Intuition and Communication – each helping you to understand yourself better. As author Margaret Ann Lembo explains, “this deck will help you focus on your intentions and ignite transformation in your life”. 42 full-colour cards and 160-page guide book, 2022, RRP £16.99

WORDS OF INNER JOY by Lorriane Anderson

This card set is so simple it’s crazy but all the same I believe it works really well. There’s a small colourful box, about three inches long and two inches wide, containing 40 colour cards. On one side is a colourful sunburst design and on the other is a short slogan written in fun bubble-gum style writing, which is meant to inspire and uplift. There’s a one to three word headline then one sentence to follow: PLAY Give yourself Permission to be a Child Today; APPRECIATE Be Thankful for Something that DIDN’T Happen today; CONNECT Call a Dear Friend or Loved One; and SMILE It Will Turn on the Light in Your Soul.

Of course on one level these are simple statements that any of us could come up with. However just having these on hand can really lift your day with their cheerful design and unselfconscious positivity.

JUST ONE THING by Dr Michael Mosley

This is quite an introductory book and it’s mainstream by Cygnus standards, but I also think it is very helpful and will appeal to readers across the board. Michael Mosley is of course very well-known and this book is based on the programme and podcast he made for BBC Radio 4, likewise called Just One Thing. It’s an informative list – heavily backed up by science and research – of simple things we can do to make our lives better and ourselves healthier. Each habit separately will help and we can add them one by one for a cumulative effect, even if some of them don’t suit us and don’t stick. The “things” include Eat Chocolate, Get More Houseplants, Take a Nap and An Apple a Day. There are plenty of notes too which point us towards the scientific research backing up what he says. It’s not a big book but it’s great for getting most of us out of our troughs. 208pp, 226 x 161 mm, Hardback, 2022, RRP £16.99 ❖ Code: 320427 ❖ Non-Member Price: £14.43 ❖ Member Price: £12.99

This is a really comprehensive guide to the angelic realm covering many different aspects of working with the angelic kingdom, and it is written with love and honesty. It is laid out in four parts, from how to become an Archangel Messenger through to the Archangel Alchemy Healing System via an in-depth look at all the Archangels and how they can help us.There are many exercises, meditations and invocations to help with the process and Alexandra also provides plentiful evidence of the Archangels’ existence. She writes with insight, wisdom and knowledge and leads us on a journey of discovery into the inner landscapes of our souls.

As the author remarks in his introduction, what most of us really want is a long life filled with vibrant health, meaning, and purpose, and in this book he shows us how we can work towards having all of this. He is also the maker of the documentary series The Human Longevity Project where he investigated the lives of long-lived, healthy populations around the world, discovering their secrets and the scientific basis underpinning their good health. In his travels he met and interviewed more than 100 health experts and dozens of amazing elders from around the world, and in this well-written and approachable book he shares with us what he learned. In the first part he illustrates the underlying fundamentals of life — what is biological ageing and how we heal; then, in the second part he focuses on the primary aspects of healthy living, detailing them and then connecting the dots between the latest science and the wisdom of the elders.

This is not a deep or complicated book but it’s inspiring and easy-to-read. It tells a story of someone’s everyday struggles and how they changed their life and developed a whole new point of view on things. Katrina decided she was buying too much and so tried to go a whole year without buying anything. She was mostly successful and, as the year went on, she started to awake to other aspects of reality. Strange things also started happening that encouraged her to reassess and to explore pagan ways of being. Ultimately she became a druid. It’s a book about getting away from a materialist way of life and awakening to nature. She now lives a more authentic and fulfilling life. THE HIGH 5 HABIT by Mel Robbins

Mel Robbins is the author of The 5 Second Rule, a motivational technique which became a global phenomenon, and it’s of some surprise that someone so successful should have looked into the mirror and suffered the same self-doubt that plagues so many of us. Having shared that with us, she goes on to explain how she came up with the idea of literally giving yourself a High 5 every day, based on the simple premise that you are your own best supporter. By doing this regularly in everything you do, you immediately increase your self-esteem – it’s clever and it works! In her entertaining book, Robbins describes how you can apply this principle to many areas of your everyday life, with exercises and examples to illustrate how to go about it. Her science-based wisdom, use of personal stories and reassuring real-life results really help in learning how to form a habit of believing in yourself and release a confidence you didn’t know you had. 264pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2023, RRP £12.99

The author of this book is a social worker as well as a practitioner of magic. This makes it practical and deeply connected to personal development, but as a text it’s also spiritual in its approach and aware of the esoteric realms. I think if any book is going to transform you it’s this one because it uses cognitive behavioral therapy techniques alongside affirmations and positive self-talk. It’s a book to be taken slowly – the author uses images connected to gardening to describe the process and gardens take time to grow. The author focuses on 9 areas including sexuality, self-love and career and gives you ways of cultivating your garden through journaling and meditation, and even if only half of it sticks, it will be an effective tool for self-development. 256pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £17.99

It’s really great to find books about love written by younger, cooler writers who recognise and want to confront the unique pressures faced by the younger generations. This author, a popular YouTuber, writer, poet and rapper, wrote this book as a result of the miserable realisation that he didn’t know how to love (himself or others) and wanted to find out why. His research soon made him understand that he and his generation are horribly prone to self-criticism and setting impossible goals, believing that love is something they have to earn or a destination to be reached, rather than a path to follow. In this guide he lays out techniques to help shake off these assumptions, clearing a path for the reader to begin to love. He writes with youthful vigour and vernacular, and includes lots of insightful stories and down to earth advice. 336pp, 203 x 152 mm, Hardback, 2022, RRP £19.99 ❖ Code: 320410 ❖ Non-Member Price: £13.32 ❖ Member Price: £11.99

THE BEAUTY OF LIFE by J Krishnamurti

This lovely, small, hardback book containing the journals of Krishnamurti is a complete edition, containing 36 pages that were not included in the first editions. Apart from the brief foreword by the original editor, Mary Lutyens, the rest of the book is a chronological presentation of Krishnamurti’s journals which you can read as laid out or enjoy dipping into at random. If you haven’t read these pieces before, we can highly recommend them because they are beautifully written, meditative and include the most evocative descriptions of nature alongside profound reflections on the workings of the mind. If you want to calm yourself and escape the distractions of the modern world, then pick up this book which is easily small enough to carry with you. 128pp, 185 x 130 mm, Hardback, 2023, RRP £12.99 ❖ Code: 320454 ❖ Non-Member Price: £9.44 ❖ Member Price: £8.50

THE MANDALA WAY by Eitan Kedmy

In the epilogue to this lovely volume, the author says “I pray that the painting of the mandala will bring love, peace, quiet and harmony in the world” which beautifully sums up the joy of his book. In the first chapters you learn about the mandala itself and about the mandala way with an interesting description of how it was brought to the attention of the modern world by Carl Jung. Of course it has also existed in other cultures, especially Tibetan Buddhism, for millennia. There’s no substitute then for doing it for yourself and enjoying the process of revealing your inner spiritual world. The instructional chapters are very easy to follow, and are really approachable so you learn to sketch a template, then to meditate and lastly how to work on your mandala until it is finished. You’ll learn about the four components that make up the process - energy, physical, mental and emotional and before long you’ll be off. This could be an invaluable book for so many people who need help overcoming a critical voice in their head. At certain times it can be so insistent and even though we know it’s just a voice, just a mental phenomenon with no connection to “reality”, we are so used to it being given authority and dominating our minds that we lack the will and resolve to deal with it and see it for what it is. I am confident that this book will make all the difference. The author is a psychotherapist who has trained hundreds of individuals in the use of mindfulness, and interestingly the cover carries endorsements from three high-profile Buddhist teachers: Tara Brach, Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg. Poor self-esteem is the bane of many people’s lives and this book puts forward six strategies that will help us loosen its grip. 240pp, 214 x 139 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £17.99

So what is Reiki? Literally the word Reiki translates as spiritual energy. This is not some kind of specific vibration which hangs somewhere in the sky and needs to be pulled into our body to channel it. This spiritual energy is our essence, our True Self, or as my teacher Takeda Ajari says, Reiki is Kami and Buddha. Kami in Japan stands for our own inner divine being and Buddha is our buddha nature. But these are just names. In essence, how can you point out your True Self which is so vast and so open, which has no beginning and end? Impossible.

Thus we have to say something so that we make it workable. Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, called this spiritual energy not only Reiki but also Great Bright Light. Why, because our True Self is luminous and shines out through the whole universe; in fact it is in the universe. Or as the ancient teachers used to say, we are the universe and the universe is us. It is our non-dual nature, or as they point out in the Japanese teachings, dai kômyô is emptiness…

Often we get confused by these names if we do not have the right understanding. For example, when we talk about emptiness we might think this means that we are empty like zombies, that our lives will

THE WAY OF REIKI by Frans Stiene

What Reiki Really Offers

become boring because we are empty. But this is of course a big misunderstanding; emptiness is like light, luminous, which means we see everything clearly. We can see, for example, why and when we get angry which in turn gives us the possibility to let the anger just melt away. And through this clarity we also see how we can help others, how we can be compassionate to others and to ourselves. Because the essence of emptiness is compassion and wisdom – clarity. But not only that – it is pure energy, unpolluted by our confused and mistaken views.

A must read for any Reiki practitioner or teacher. Frans Stiene has been pursuing the deeper meaning of Reiki and working to understand the teachings of Mikao Usui since the early 2000s. He has absorbed knowledge from teachers, writings, and his own practice, and in this book he shares all that he has learned; and in the process he has created the ultimate roadmap to discovering the essence of the system and the path to Self-Realisation. The book is split into two parts: the first looks at the less commonly adopted process of Preparation, and the second studies the various Practices in detail. There is also a helpful Appendix. To be a truly successful Reiki practitioner, Stiene urges you to get onto the path of becoming a better human being, and to understanding your true nature. In this book you will find out how. 224pp, 215 x 141 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £14.99 ❖ Code: 320425 ❖ Non-Member Price: £11.66 ❖ Member Price: £10.50

In other words, we can say that emptiness – Reiki – is a state of mind in which we have not put extra ideas in our mind, ideas that may come from experiences or judgements rather than from our True Self, our buddha nature. Emptiness is a state of no borders – no expectations, no labels, no preconceived ideas, no mistaken beliefs, unfabricated, of just pure freedom, which is wide open, and free from dual fixation. And with this emptiness, pure energy flows through our whole being, within and out like a great bright light emanating its radiance in all directions. This pure energy is our driving force for compassion and kindness, our motivation to help others, and help others to rediscover their own great bright light…

Thus to be able to realise that we are Reiki, that we are nonduality, emptiness, a great bright light, buddha, kami, the universe, or whatever word you want to use, we need to have a system in place to help us remember this. Because remembering this as we live in modern society is not so easy. This is why Mikao Usui placed very specific practices within his system. However, we need to practice them in the correct way, just like making a cake. For example, if we bake a cake and we put the ingredients together in the wrong way or we do not read the instructions correctly or we do not use the correct time and temperature, we get a cake which might not even be edible.

Therefore we need a qualified teacher who has walked the path themselves so that they can guide the student the right way to practice the system of Reiki, so that the student can have a direct experience of their True Self, of their non-dual nature. Because it is only through this direct experience that we are really creating a difference in this world, creating it ourselves. And that is what the system of Reiki is all about. We will start to get a much clearer perception of this as we explore in this book all the different teachings Mikao Usui placed within his system…

A lot of it is practical and will help you connect with your own guides, use manifestation to make your life better and connect with other dimensions. It’s not a long book but there’s enough there to enable you to expand your consciousness.

This is both a visceral narrative of having to deal with the diagnosis, hospital treatment, palliative care and death of a beloved husband, and an uplifting and reassuring personal account of signs and messages received by the author revealing life after life. The author captures the intensity of dealing with death and the confusion and conflicting emotions that come with grief. You really feel for her, but at the same time you get to feel joy at her gradual realisation that she was being contacted by her husband after his death. The sub-title of the book is Signs from the Other Side Offering Comfort and Hope after the Death of a Loved One and it delivers on this, but her honest narrative of the intensity of both the dying and the grieving process, before realising how and why she was meant to go on, make this a really helpful book.

This is quite a simple book but it’s enjoyable and easy to read. Laura Lynne Jackson looks glamorous and very Hollywood but she is also an Oxford graduate and a school teacher. She works now as a psychic and this book is full of stories or amazing communications and all sorts of signs from loved ones on the other side that prove that death is not the end and that people are still there talking to us and guiding us. There’s an introduction and then 31 chapters and each one I believe tells a story that shatters the usual materialist view of the universe. There isn’t any analysis really, but the author wants to lift us and encourage us. You have to take a book like this as it comes but it will definitely lift your spirits and also encourage us to examine the signs around us to see whether we are actually being told or shown something. 320pp, 229 x 158 mm, Paperback, 2019, RRP £14.99

AFTER by Dr Bruce Greyson

When Raymond Moody, author of Life After Life, calls a book “A major contribution to the study of what happens when we die, which will quickly prove to be a classic in near-death studies” you need to take notice. After is a ground-breaking book for anyone curious about the nature of consciousness and the pursuit of a meaningful life. What happens when we die? Ten percent of people whose hearts stop, and then restart, report near-death experiences. Stories of lights, tunnels and reunions with late loved ones have been relayed - and dismissed - since ancient times. But when Dr Bruce Greyson’s patients started describing events that he simply could not dismiss, he began to investigate. Here are the results of his research.

BOOK REVIEWS – Psychic Powers & The Other Side

If you are unfamiliar with the Akashic Records, they consist of all thoughts, deeds and actions that have ever been created in the past, present or future. The author, a past life regression practitioner, realised through sessions with clients that more was needed to help them heal, and started to help them gain their own access to these records as part of their journey. In this book she shares the processes she used to do this, from the revelations that came after a near-death experience, to extensive, easy to follow exercises that she has developed over the years. If you are at all sceptical, don’t be, she is very clear that if you have the proper desire, technique and intention, you too can enter the Mindstream, and visit your own personal distinctive mystical spaces and find custom-made answers to life’s most perplexing questions.

This is a lovely weighty hardback full of colour and helpful diagrams and illustrations. The subtitle is “A Cosmic Guide to Health, Healing and Harnessing the Power of the Planets” which pretty much sums up its approach and reach. It goes deep but it’s not daunting or academic. The positions of the planets mean a lot more than whether you are going to have a good day or what colour clothes you should wear. This book weaves together all the levels that are touched by astrology from nutrition to exercise and from healing to psychology. You can use this book to design daily practices and longer-term programmes to improve your life and feel more integrated. These can also be adjusted over the cycle of the year to stay in touch with planetary influences. This is a great book for people who know a bit about the planets and who now want to take a deeper dive.

This is a wise and calm book. Many people require reassurance nowadays and this book provides it. The author is a qualified counsellor who has appeared on mainstream television and radio. It’s about pain, grief and sleeplessness, about being awake – as she describes it – at 4.00 a.m. and all the pain and opportunities that entails. It’s not a practical book on helping with sleep although there are a lot of tips and advice. Rather it’s a wise arm around the shoulder and a gentle chat from someone who has seen it all. She talks in particular about how grief and loss can have an impact on our sleep and she is strong on dreams, on what to do when your dreams are getting you down, and how you can use dreams to get you out of it, because dreams can also heal you. There are many exercises in the book and also some extremely useful resources in the back.

It is accepted that the Tibetan Buddhists have the best techniques for working with dreams and sleep. Andrew Holecek, the best non-Tibetan teacher on the subject, calls Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche “the pre-eminent voice in the world of dream yoga”. This is a new and revised edition of his seminal work on the subject. People talk about taking a retreat, but sleeping and dreaming – which takes up, all being well, one third of our lives – is a ready-made retreat possibility that we can use any time to step away from the everyday world. The book is of course full of exercises and there are some esoteric terms but the author guides us gently and patiently. There is also a glossary. With our busy waking lives it would be good to make space for personal development at night. The book carries a very positive foreword by the Dalai Lama. 272pp, 227 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £17.99 ❖ Code: 320437 ❖ Non-Member Price: £14.43 ❖ Member Price: £12.99

THE ORACLE OF NIGHT by Sidarta Ribeiro

This is not a spiritual book and is very much straight down the line scientific, but it is also poetic and mysterious. Its subtitle is The History and Science of Dreams and that captures it all. The author is a Brazilian professor of neuroscience and he knows most of what there is to know about the brain. The obvious question is Why Do We Dream and the author looks at the whole of human history and culture to try and find out. He ends up coming to some exciting conclusions and along the way we learn a lot about different societies and groups all over the world and their different approaches to sleep and dreams. It also strays into mental illness, nightmares, drugs and a possible end to dreaming as we know it. It’s a big book but it’s never academic and I can’t think of a more authoritative book of dreaming.

THE KABBALAH OF LIGHT by Catherine Shainberg

The Kabbalah of Light lineage began with Rabbi Isaac the Blind in the 12th and 13th centuries and Catherine is the contemporary lineage holder in that tradition. This book contains 160 different exercises and practices, all rich in imagery, that will help you dialogue with your subconscious. It’s like an instant self-therapy and you don’t need to know too much about Kabbalah to start on the work. It’s practical but it’s also tinged with the beauty and mystery of the Jewish spiritual traditions. The process might initially throw up challenges but if we are brave and patient we can work through to get to a place of peace and tranquillity. With all the exercises included, I believe it would be hard not to benefit from this book.

BOOK REVIEWS – Astrology & Dreams

Ialways had a well-developed sixth sense; even when I was unaware. I could see when people were lying, sense the energy forms, and even felt the pain of others. I also felt as if someone was always near me, as if the Universe was taking care of me – I just couldn’t put my finger on it. The majority of people live life from the five-sensory experience. This is why empaths can feel like weirdos around “normal” people. But for empaths, it is painful to pretend to be “normal” to be accepted. Trying to fit in is detrimental for an empath’s soul. Let’s just agree, we are the aliens who incarnated at this time because we have a beautiful mission to share our light and elevate the vibrations of Mother Earth…

You probably have a beautiful imagination but have been told all your life to minimize it, when, in reality, your imagination is everything.

It is crucial to break through the negative societal collective energy.

I often hear questions such as: How can I stop being so sensitive?

How can I stop being an empath?

The “gift” of being highly sensitive can sound like a burden when you are in an unaware state. But worry not, because you are about to uncover how to overcome the challenge and turn it to your advantage. You are about to learn how to move from an unaware to an empowered empath.

Here is the bittersweet truth: you can’t turn your empath powers off. However, you can morph yourself from an unaware state to an empowered state.

Becoming Aware

When you are unaware, this can bring a lot of people from lower energy frequencies to you.

This book will help you take care of your energy, so you don’t get tangled in other people’s negative vibes, and it will help you to figure out how to take a positive turn in your life as a sensitive person.

It’s not about running away from yourself; it is about harnessing your internal power and turning it into your superpower.

There is a reason you came into this world being sensitive.

You want to help people. You are always there to offer advice. You are present with others and yet you respect their boundaries and would never overstep with your suggestions.

That’s because empaths can feel if another person is uncomfortable and will navigate the murky waters

of social situations to avoid hurting them.

You hold space for others and powerfully influence their energy without realizing it. People feel good around you and never want to leave. When empowered, empaths neutralize negative energy. This gift comes with time and practice.

This book guides you through elevating your vibrations. Once you vibrate higher, you will only attract those who match your frequency, and the Universe will take care of the rest. And while you are still working on your empowerment, I want to offer you tools that can help you at any moment to feel the ease and lightness of your being.

Through this book, I want a beautiful adventure to unfold for you, one in which you will finally get to know yourself, stop hiding from your gift, and know how to navigate in this world as a highly sensitive person…

In this book I am going to share with you all the tools you need, along with understanding and acceptance of your innate nature. To help you unwrap the gift of sensitivity.

As you can see, there is nothing new to learn; you’re simply awakening to your true nature.

Treasure this moment, I hope you enjoyed the beginning of what will be an incredible adventure of coming to your own empowerment.

It is so common to hear sensitive people expressing their desire to change, to stop being an empath and to get some peace from anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. This is sad, because being sensitive is to be kind and caring and it would be a loss to everyone if you turned it off. Which is where this book comes in. Straightforward, clear and easy to follow, it focuses on how to overcome the challenges of being an empath and turn them to your advantage, into a super power if you like! The author, Jane Novak, is a self-admitted empath and she shares her innermost thoughts and her journey with us so you feel inspired by her to follow her path. Her guide includes tools to use, exercises to practise and helpful advice and context along the way. It’s a great new addition to all the books already out there. 192pp, 216 x 135 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £12.99 ❖ Code: 320456 ❖ Non-Member Price: £9.44 ❖ Member Price: £8.50

We first engage with fairy tales in childhood and they never leave us. Characters such as the transformational Sleeping Beauty, the “rescuer” Prince Charming and the scary, shapeshifting wolf in Little Red Riding Hood are embedded deep in our imagination and conjure up feelings that we all can identify with on some level. Working with fairy tales can be as easy as aligning to a character in a tale and then putting a positive spin on it. The simple act of “making it real”, by living out the story in your mind, can change the way you think and behave. Alison Davies offers a whole host of tips and practical exercises for working with the symbols, characters and plotlines in fairy tales. These include storyboarding your own fairy tale to boost your creativity and learning how to be your own fairy godmothers in order to bring the changes you want into your life! Colin Wilson was one of the greatest writers in the esoteric field and his books have served as a crucial introduction to various subjects for many of us. He was an undoubted expert. But he was also a generous supporter and consequently he also wrote a staggering 180 introductions, forewords, prefaces and afterwords to other people’s books. He rarely said no to anybody. In these works he wasn’t interested in fulfilling a contractual obligation but wanted instead to convey his excitement and enthusiasm for the accompanying text. Here are 17 of his best pieces, chosen by Wilson expert Colin Stanley, and in them you can read his best thoughts on magic, witchcraft, exorcism, ghosts, poltergeists, the Loch Ness Monster, the afterlife, dowsing and much more. It’s a really interesting greatest hits. 224pp, 218 x 143 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £13.99 ❖ Code: 320417 ❖ Non-Member Price: £11.10 ❖ Member Price: £9.99

Iona Jenkins is an author, creative writer and poet, and here she brings together her love of wisdom, sacred places, native landscapes, legends, the arts and nature. It is beautifully crafted and a joy to read: part story, part poetry with a few practical suggestions, optional meditations and tasks at the end of each chapter to help us discover our own inspirations. While enjoying her narrative we discover how to connect with our souls by opening to the living world of Nature through simple exercises aligning our lives with the seasons, communing with the trees and embracing the wisdom of the animal kingdom. Originally published in 2002, Healing Sounds has become the foundation for the field of sound healing and remains simply the best guidebook on the subject. To add to its already thorough examination of this form of healing and the exercises laid out in the book, this 30th anniversary edition also includes over 100 minutes of exclusive audio downloads featuring recordings of sound healing exercises, guided meditations and sonic excerpts. The book itself also looks at spiritual and scientific viewpoints on how to use the transformative power of sound for healing on physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. It then explores overtone chanting - also called vocal harmonics - the ability of the human voice to create two or more notes at the same time, and describes how to perform them and experience their transformative and curative powers.

THE OTHER WITHIN by Daniel Deardorff

This is a profound and daring book and what it covers is quite demanding but also so life-enhancing. I was drawn to it though because it contains commentaries by three authors who are popular at Cygnus: the storyteller Martin Shaw, Robert Simmons, author of The Book of Stones and Robert Bly, the poet and author of Iron John. It’s a book about Otherness, which can still be relevant to most of us who don’t have an overt “Other” aspect. Daniel certainly did – he was a survivor of childhood polio and he got around in a wheelchair. He was also a scholar of myth, and a storyteller and ritualist. Sharon Blackie calls this “A book to savour…a love song to the Outsider”. It is full of myths and stories of tricksters and of trauma, exile, disability, illness, death and grief. Through reading this enjoyable book we might be able to release the outsider in us, whether it is low or high profile. 288pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £16.99 ❖ Code: 320452 ❖ Non-Member Price: £12.21 ❖ Member Price: £10.99

THE ULTIMATE BOOK ON VOCAL SOUND HEALING by Githa Ben-David Githa Ben-David wrote the popular book The Note from Heaven, which was a groundbreaking title on using the human voice for spiritual development. That title is now unavailable but it’s been included as part one of this new book: there are two other parts and the book as a whole is more than 500 pages long. She says that if you surrender to the Note from Heaven, you are led into a state of oneness. I did a class once with Githa and I remember singing notes that I could never have imagined reaching. I think this text must contain almost all you need to know about healing through the voice. It’s full of stories and anecdotes about the author’s own life and her training in India at the feet of several eminent teachers. There are several photographs and hand-drawn diagrams where necessary but most of all the teaching is experiential. 552pp, 216 x 142 mm, Paperback, 2022, RRP £28.99 ❖ Code: 320424 ❖ Non-Member Price: £22.21 ❖ Member Price: £19.99

BOOK REVIEWS – Sound & Creativity

This newly published version of one of the greatest classics of esoteric literature - which first appeared in the early 20th century - does not tinker with the original text but now includes images for each of the chapters which “fulfil a representative and archetypal role of each of the chapters of the work”. They are designed to help those of us who are just beginning to read about Hermeticism to get to grips with its mysteries. This is a text that has influenced spiritual seekers for a long time. Even though it’s a work that’s deliberately been presented as esoteric, it is actually immensely practical. The work itself is based on seven fundamental principles that govern this universe which help you to understand that in whatever circumstance of your life you find yourself, you are where you need to be. It also makes it clear that the spiritual path is extremely personal and that you must walk it alone.

It can be daunting to tackle the fundamentals of karma, especially since there are some ongoing discussions of inconsistencies and controversies, so this book represents a refreshing change. Not only does it acknowledge and confront the issues by examining the difference between universal consequence and environmental consequence but it presents the information in the really approachable form of a conversation between a guru and his young student. The inquisitive and sometimes demanding student is keen both to question and to learn, and the guru calmly instructs him. We in turn learn about karmic debt incurred as the result of personal action, and about the path whereby karmic attachment can be decreased. It’s a comprehensive “discussion” and because it’s scripted as a conversation it’s easy to learn and feel well instructed in all its fundamental principles.

THE FUTURE ANCESTOR by Annabelle Sharman

The popular Cygnus author Rebecca Campbell says in the foreword of this lovely book “The Future Ancestor is a call to see the sacred in the everyday, and to develop a conscious relationship with the land that holds, sustains and nurtures us. It’s a clear call to action to own our story, personally and culturally, and to heal what’s ours to heal so that, ultimately, we can take our place as ancestors for those yet to come.” The author, Annabelle Sharman, is an Aboriginal Bush woman of the Mutti Mutti tribe, one of the “Stolen Generation” who were forcibly removed from their parents. Here she shares her own (some heartrending) stories and wisdom along with the wisdom of her ancestors. Beautifully written, poignant, poetic and uplifting, this book is an absolute delight.

BOOK REVIEWS – Spiritual

This is a book about polarity work, a holistic practice that can help us to integrate the masculine and feminine energies within us. Elliott Saxby, a practitioner and trainer, has written an excellent guide, useful both for anyone new to this form of healing or anyone more experienced looking for more insight and ideas. Fusing ancient Vedic knowledge and Western psychology with Tantric and Taoist wisdom, it lays out the overlying principles and concepts but also provides practical information, from the 4 main polarity maps through to examples and exercises to help us navigate our inner duality. The definitions of masculine and feminine are known to us, but by mapping them out clearly, it makes it easier to understand why we, and others, are behaving in a certain way. Polarity work then takes this knowledge and helps us to evolve physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The Undines are famous in spirituality and magic as the people of the water element, who can bring a special power into our lives. Now you can transform your world even when it’s not near water with this book on healing, spell work, and connecting to merfolk of all kinds. With this deep dive into the realm of mystical water creatures, you’ll find your mermaid self by exploring eight archetypes. From the Water Goddess to the Sea Witch to the Nymph, these archetypes help you balance your chakras, harness the power of the moon phases, call on the healing powers of water, and bring more abundance and happiness into your life. There are also rituals, devotions, healing exercises, energetic alignments, and more. With teachings as deep as the ocean, this book shows you how to find your own source of power and live an enchanted life. 264pp, 203 x 133 mm, Paperback, 2023, RRP £15.99 ❖ Code: 320434 ❖ Non-Member Price: £13.32 ❖ Member Price: £11.99

RADICAL REGENERATION by Andrew Harvey and Carolyn Baker In this big book the authors have brought together four previous shorter books: Return to Joy, Savage Grace, Saving Animals from Ourselves and Radical Regeneration. These were all published by a smaller and less high-profile publisher. Cygnus has featured many books by Andrew Harvey before and he is always bracingly wise and seriously spiritual. He is one of the best guides we have to sacred activism and I would recommend this book highly as a way into really getting involved in the work of healing the world. Sometimes it takes courage to immerse ourselves into the horrible things that are happening and I believe that sparing ourselves the pain can be justified. However this is the perfect book – succinct, clear and full of practical information – to turn to if we want to start facing head-on all the heavy issues. 576pp, 229 x 152 mm, Paperback, 2023, RRP £25.00 ❖ Code: 320448 ❖ Non-Member Price: £17.76 ❖ Member Price: £15.99
