Schnabel tops Steel Shoe 3 Hr Campbellsport, Wisconsin - January 22 By Dave Hollub

I

kept thinking, what a difference from last year as I drove over to NanSea’s Tiki Bar on Kettle Moraine Lake for the 2012 Steel Shoe Benefit race. Last year the drive started in minus fifteen degree temps, which by race time climbed all the way to zero at the noon start. This year the temperature was hovering near the freezing point and snow was falling lightly. As I pulled into the parking lot I was glad to see it was nearly full of race trailers, and people getting ready to head onto the lake. A quick check in with race organizer Judy Sumner revealed the course was again a Jeff Fredette creation, and around 6.3 miles long. As soon as the first wave of practice ended it was obvious the course was challenging with a mix of tight turns, high speed sweepers, and some straights just long enough to keep the throttle twisted to the stops. New this year was an Ironman class, and seven racers were entered to test their personal endurance. This year the start was returned to waves by bike class and when the green dropped on the first wave JR Schnabel edged out the Diamond Racing Wheels (Nick Smith/ Adam Bushman) and How Did I Get Roped Into This bikes at the end of the start straight. Next up were the Middleweight bikes with the DC Riders (Scott Fittshur/ Ryan Gilbert) bike getting a big jump on the rest of the class. Hyde Racing (Jay Waalen) and Just The Tip rounded out the first three onto the course for the Middleweight class. Tyler Smulders on

Ironman JR Schnabel won his class as well as the overall.

the Rob’s bike went into the corner just ahead of the Moto On Ice Lites (Mitch Lewis/ John Lewis/ Ricky Piskoty)entry. Last year’s Lightweight winner Lemon Pie Productions was still sitting on the start line as Jon Stewart stalled out briefly. As Stewart refired the bike and headed down the start it was obvious he wasn’t going to hold anything back to regain the lost time. By the time a couple laps were on the score sheet Schnabel was showing the same

uncatchable speed he had last year, and he was already starting to gap everyone. On lap four the Lemon Pie Bike was forced out by a mechanical. By the midway point in the race the light snow was turning into a freezing rain making visibility difficult, and forcing most riders to toss their goggles. The bad visibility seemed to have little effect on Ironman Schnabel as he was still out front followed by the Mischlers HD/BMW bike.

The pre race pits were busy.

Chris Foskett and Serge Figliuzzi head home after a fun day of racing.

At the two hour point only Schnabel and the Mischler bike were on lap thirteen while the Diamond Racing Wheels entry was running third just ahead of the FHK Racing (Terry Hahn/ Roy Nafzer/ Tom Hofmaster) and Retreiver Racing (Patrick Ryder/ Zac Rosine/ Lance Wollin) bikes, all on lap twelve. By this time seven bikes were out of the race for various reasons, leaving fourty-five still out there putting in laps. By the time Schnabel raced his Suburban HD/Cedar Creek MS/ Fuel PS backed Kawasaki across the finish he had logged twenty laps to take the overall win as well as the Ironman class win. Mischlers HD/BMW (Eric Mischler/ Dan Mischler/ Nick

Smith) entry took the Heavyweight class win by also logging twenty laps. Schnabel later said, “This year was fun, and that’s the main reason behind the Steel Shoe Fund. The idea is to go out have a good time and raise money for a good cause. One thing I liked this year was not having to run to our bikes in the start, I am usually the last one to my bike because I run so slow. This year we went back to a regular motocross type start, and I got as good jump. The first couple laps were more finding out the track because we didn’t get our normal hour of practice to figure it out. The first couple laps were just kind of hang on and hope you make the turns right. By about a

half hour in I kind of figured out some of the trickier turns and was able to start picking up my pace. The mid part of the race I felt really good and was really jamming through some laps. By the end of the race it got so rough and snowy I was kind of circling, and not running tot hard. This year I have some of the people that helped me out my rookie year coming back so I really want to thank Suburban Motors Harley Davidson, Cedar Creek,

Fuel Motor Sports, and Millenium Technologies.” Retriever Racing crossed the finish in the fourth overall position (with nineteen laps) to clinch the lightweight class win just ahead of the Rob’s Performance bike (Ed Smulders/ Tyler Smulders). DC Riders was the first Middleweight bike to cross the finish in the eighth overall spot, just ahead of Heinecke Auto (Andy Heinecke/ Jack Sutherland).

Jeff Fredette commented, “The day went really good. I think everyone had a great time out there. We had a little over a 6 mile course setup. I don’t think anybody could memorize the whole track- guys would start to think they got it and then they would start to blow corners. For as thin as the ice was the track held up, and we didn’t have to change anything all day. I was also working on some new tires today and was getting crazy good traction from them. My 250 seized out there, but the bike we (Jeff Fredette/ Tim Farrell/ Pete Laubmeier/ Chase Guthriehad) in the heavy class ran great and we got third on that. I think we made the top five overall, and everything went good. Thanks to Kawasaki, Moose, Fredette Racing Products, and Arai for all their help today.” By the time the racers hit the finish at 3PM they were covered with a sheet of ice from the freezing rain, which made goggles useless. D23 Off-Road Banquet erstwhile host and hostess. Once again the chef at the Little Falls Ballroom’s laid out a tasty feast worthy of a banquet! If there is a location better suited to our banquet, it has yet to be discovered. This place has a warm atmosphere, friendly bartenders and an authentic northwoods-knotty pine atmosphere. Didn’t hurt that Larson’s Cycle was there with shiny new KTM’s and Husabergs for us to caress longingly. And what of the 2011 season, you ask? Two words: Nate Ferderer. As with the 2010 season, Mr. Ferderer dominated the woods, tracks and trails. He won every single enduro he entered... convincingly. Nate never finished lower than second place in a Hare Scrambles. When he and his Yamaha approach you in the woods, his sound signature betray’s him; he’s absolutely pinned, and as the rolling thunder arrives it reminds one of a couple fellows named Bobbit and Lafferty. Taking home the overall trophy for both Enduro and Hare Scrambles attests to his speed and riding talent. But Nate was not alone at the front of the Hare Scrambles pack. Kyle Nelson and Matt Stavish both hounded Ferderer all year. This

CWIRA Season Opener

Amherst, WI - January 8

S

eason openers are always special. You never really feel ready, but still you and everyone else in the pits is excited to get the racing started. Even in the northern portion of the Cycle USA readership area, many have their bikes and quads put away for the winter. Still, others have been busy for weeks, prepping, making final adjustments, and eagerly awaiting January 8th, as it opened the 2012 Central Wisconsin Ice Racing Association’s season. There’s a big variety or riders and machines at these events. Bikes and quads that never get touched during the summer, specially built and used only on the frozen lakes during winter. Then there’s the riders that race all summer, then convert the machines over for the new season. Some are very serious... and there is no limit to how fine tuned some of these machines can get. Also, there are the guys that show up with just a set of decent tires and added fenders, ready to have a great time. Regardless, everyone enjoys it, and appreciates every weekend they get out of the short season. If you think summer events are weather dependant, try ice racing. Still, all these racers consider it well worth the effort, it is

addicting, even as a spectator. This season opener was different from any I had ever been to... it was run on a dry land course. An old oval used for horse racing in the past, now converted to a really good ice racing track thanks to weeks of effort, and a lot of hauled in water. Mother nature took care of freezing the million plus gallons of water that built up an average of ten inches or more in ice. Also unique, this event was combined with a snowmobile racing weekend. Several classes were added for the sleds on this, their second day of racing. Some of these guys were the best in the country... Pros with serious efforts and a lot of money invested in the racing efforts. As a spectator, it was cool having the mix. The CWIRA regulars seemed to like it as well... for the most part. The added classes, added practice, and a lot of course delays from simple crashes (during the CWIRA program) delayed the program enough that the second half of the racing had to be cut out. Basically it became a one moto type of format. Spectators got an awesome show, and even the racers didn’t seem to bummed about the half day of racing that ended under the lights as it was. The combined show, and first race excitement kept any disappointment to a minimum. The ProAm Rubber ATV class was as wild as any all day. John Flick quickly took over the lead with Mitchel Williams, Jim Falke and Scott Davis all close behind. As they entered the second lap Flick had a small margin.

The pit area was flooded so ice would protect the studded tires.

Tryton Stewart leads Hanna Daniels in the Junior motorcycle class.

Out of turn four Davis slid around Falke but then half a lap later the red flag came out as a rider was in the hay bales. A rolling restart had the same three front runners out front for a lap as Tad Fehrenbach started making a move to the front on his Honda. After another restart, there was a bunch of scrambling yet Flick never surrendered that lead position. Davis made the most of the final laps and finished second, just edging out Fehrenbach. Colin Wilcott and Williams rounded out the top five. Two restarts, a bunch of position changes - all part of the never ending close action in the non-studded classes. The following class was for the Open C motorcycle riders. Marshfield, WI’s Hayden Henry got a good jump, then slipped past Hanna Daniels coming out of the second turn to take the lead all the way to the finish. Daniels held close, just ahead of Tryton Stewart and Sierra Heindl. Adam Zylkowski rounded out the top five on his Suzuki. The Junior motorcycle class had plenty of action as Trenton Stewart took the lead off the line with Cody Funk pushing him hard. As the two finished the second lap, Funk dove to the inside of Stewart for the lead. A half lap later Hanna Daniels made up some ground and caught onto Stewart’s pace, fighting over second. As the white flag flew Daniels charged hard into turn three of the final lap and came together with Stewart and they both tumbled off the track, into the hay bales.

Dj Schultz was on top of his game, winning the Open Pro Quad class.

Marshfield’s Noah Baehnman was in the right spot to cross the line in second ahead of Mason Barth on his Honda. When the Pro Vet class came to the line, the questions was if anyone would be able to knock last year’s regular winner John Strangfeld off the top box. At the drop of the

flag, Moose/ Part Unlimited backed Strangfeld set out to answer the question by pouncing into the lead between turns two and three. From there he was kept honest for sure, but never out of control of the lead, taking it to the checkers. The race for second was between two Kaukauna, WI riders. Dan Van

Daalwyk got the jump off the line ahead of Fred Therrien, and they rode close in that order each lap. Pat Bean finished fourth on his Yamaha. In the Amateur Vet class, David Zavistowski had the best reactions to lead the pack into the first turn with Mike Trulen second. Rick Rozinski made the trip up from Kenosha, and was quick to look for a way around Trulen. As he raced into turn three, still on the first lap, Rozinski held it on and moved up. From there he stuck to Zavistowski’s rear fender through every lap, never able to make another move. Trulen fell victim to Gordy Halys in the third lap, then Corey Schroeder right before the finish. Dale Funk finished sixth ahead of Jack Potter. Always fun... the Quad A Rubber guys had two heat races to set up a final. Louis Plaskey was out front early but then slid ino the hay bales, but was back in the chase just as quick. Cody Norris grabbed the lead to eventually win ahead of Jeremy Flees and a quick to recover Plaskey. In the second heat, Scott Lindner was leading with Mitchell Williams second. Dan Lindner joined the battle, passing Williams, then going side by side for two laps with wis brother Scott. Late in the third lap Dan Lindner lost it with Williams forcing a re-start to finish the final laps. Scott Lindner again stayed out front to finish ahead of Dan. With time running out in the day, the second portion of racing was cancelled, so only the finals from any earlier heat races were left to run... and that brought out some of the fastest racing of the day. In the Quad A Rubber final, Scott Lindner managed to put it all together for the win. It was still another close, and action filled race as Flees finished second with Dan Lindner, Louis Plaskey and Cody Norris rounding out the top five. In the Open Pro motorcycle class final Strangfeld jumped out to lead, but with a ton of pressure right away. By the second lap it was too much and the pace was really fast. pulling a really tight move on the inside. The pass pushed Strangfeld out a little, and the lost momentum allowed a freight train of others to move past. By the end of three it was Adam Bushman in second ahead of Jacob Cunningham and then Strangfeld. They held those positions to the end with Brain Frandsen finishing fifth in the ten rider final. Schwarzenbacher got a $500 bonus check for the win from crashedtoys.com, as this event was part of the new Triple Crown three race series. Later, in the 250/450 Pro race Russel Bradley found the right pace to win ahead of Schwarzenbacher and Bushman. The Open Pro Quad riders were just as impressive. After a restart, DJ Schultz held the lead, just ahead of Wes Asbach and Dustin Hoffman. On the last lap, just corners from the finish Hoff-

n one of the coldest days of the winter, MX racers and families got together to celebrate the overall winners of Crossroads MX Series at the Knights of Columbus in Effingham, IL. and share expectations for the upcoming season. As the racers entered the hall, they were presented with goodie bags filled with product from the banquet sponsors. A slide show provided by Kathleen Gepford, was playing on the big screen to entertain everyone until the program started later that evening. After dinner, everyone was informed of track changes, 2012 race schedules, membership information and practice schedules, and up coming events. CRMX also announced that they have no intention of taking quads off the track. The program will continue to run as it has in the past with the quads running their full program after the bikes finish. Welcome news for sure to those riders, and good for the events and sport overall as well. Sponsors were recognized and thanked for all their generous support during the 2011 race season as well as their give-aways for the banquet. Just before the banquet, announcer Gary Rufner became ill and wasn’t able to do the awards presentation. A special thanks to

Cody Willenborg of CW Motorsports who stepped in, and filled his shoes. Awards were personalized by having the winner’s favorite racing picture printed on each plaque. Overall Champions of each class were presented with a CRMX Team Hoodie. Overall track champions in the Youth, Caiden Gerling, Amateur class, Dylan Glueck and 4Wheel class, Kristofer Wildhaber, were presented a five foot trophy as well as a free gate pass for the 2012 racing season. Crossroads MX would like to thank everyone for their support during the 2011 race season and look forward to a great year in 2012.

Spring Creek MX Banquet Red Wing, MN - Oct. 29 By Rolfe Otterness

J

ohn Martin and crew closed up the books on the 2011 Spring Creek Motocross Park Super Series with the grand finale at the Treasure Island Casino near Red Wing. The dynamic duo of Guy Ohland (the voice of Spring Creek) and Mike Quinn (referee) hosted the event. After a deluxe buffet meal the troops settled down in a relatively peaceful chaotic fashion to see who did what over the summer. There were a few special awards given out first off. The Mazeppa area Jaycees rep Dale Preble presented a $500 scholarship to Brent Bargahn. Mike Quinn presented Brian Raskovich an award for being the first spectator ever to be air-flighted out to the hospital (where he recovered nicely). Multi-class winners were given some extra attention for their triumphs and in this group were Travis Frias, Jerry Robin, Keenan Strom, Nick Jackson, Henry Miller, Blake Raskovich, Donny Bonnickson and Jeff Ferrin. The first Spring Creek version of the Horizon Award was announced by Dave Wessling with Dean Patterson taking the

honors. It may have been the “Over the Horizon award, perhaps? All those who were eligible for top ten awards received plaques and if high on the list, as in first, they received the treasured championship jackets provided by Bob’s Cycle. Those in second and third received hooded sweatshirts. Ample goodies were handed out to the rest of

the riders thanks to the other sponsors. The lucky winners of the drawing for the bikes were Ben Adamson taking home a KTM 65 provided by Larson’s Cycle and KTM; and Blaze Best snaring the Kawasaki KX250F donated by Plainview Powersports. Thanks to all the sponsors that helped to make the season and the night a success.

Bostrom bakes Pine City Pine City, Minnesota - January 28 By Tim McBride

J

acob Bostrom scored the win in the Open Pro bike main event during round three of the Stud Club promoted - Minnesota Championship Ice Racing Series, hosted by the Danny C’s Beach Rocks Resort on Pokegama Lake in Pine City. With the unusually mild Minnesota weather, the big question was weather the ice conditions would be safe enough to even have the event, but a cold snap allowed event Jimmy “Quick” Bjerke, promoter and president of the Stud Club plenty of safe frozen aqua to prepare the multi-turn road coarse style race track. “I wanted to make a big track so it would have a nice flow to it,” explained Bjerke. The large race track provided plenty of passing opportunities and some very high speeds as well. During the Dash for Cash, which was held after the preliminary qualifying heat races, pro class luminary C.J. Wise unloaded his Yamaha hard at one of the faster sections of the track. Wise was on the ice for quite some time and as the race resumed, Craig Torgerson edged Bostrom and the rest of the field for the first place winnings. Meanwhile, Wise was fielding the customary questions from the EMT’s such as, what is your name? What is today’s date? Who are the judges on American Idol? After much scrutiny, Wise eventually said he was ok, and was later lined up for the Open Pro bike main. Bostrom had to take advantage of the passing opportunities that the expansive circuit allowed as once again he struggled of the starting line and chased previous event winner Torgerson for three laps before making the pass and eventually racing on to a comfortable win. Jesse Edwards finished third ahead of a recovered C.J. Wise. Dain Olson rounded out the top five of the ten rider field.

#00 Tevin Liimatainen came from behind to win his Mini class.

The Open Pro class saw #407 Jacob Bostrom take the win.

Open B class’s #112 Justin Sund bested 15 other competitors.

The four wheeled division saw Taylor Peterson scoring a hat-trick by winning the Pro Open, Open A, and following it up in the Unstudded Open Unlimited feature as well. Cameron Johnson finished a close second place to Peterson during both of the studded Pro Open and Open A main events. Dean Trahan finished a close second to the versatile race winner Peterson in Unstudded Open. One of the more incidental races came in the Open C main event. Early race leaders Derek Rossing and Brock Zychowski were battling for the lead when suddenly Zychowski ran into the back end of Rossing as they entered the first turn at a very high speed. The two riders were soon tumbling off the track and out of contention. The miscue allowed third place Ryan Bruggerman to take the lead and eventual win. Daniele Flanscha was awarded second ahead of Tom Clark and the rest of the pack. The much anticipated Open B Quad final was a sight to behold as fifteen competitors rumbled into the first turn. Justin Sund emerged the winner ahead of Bruggerman. Kyle Hogie, Ryan Garson and Ryan Santikko rounded out the top five finishing positions respectively. Great day at Rock Dam Lake Rock Dam, Wisconsin - Jan. 29

W

e caught up with the third round of the CWIRA 2012 series just west of Eau Claire on Rock Dam Lake. With the ongoing fight for good ice this winter, this event was moved from another location, back to this same lake that had been used the week prior. Often that leads to a tough day of racing, on a chewed up track. That wasn’t the case today, the exact same track was used, and it was in great shape. A good turnout enjoyed a typical fun day at the races in Central Wisconsin. Rock Dam had the full oval course where most of the racing takes place, as well as a GP layout with right and left hand turns. This is the norm for CWIRA events, but wasn’t an option at the season opener in Amherst. John Strangfeld ran out Colin Wilcott and Nick Moelter (13) ran like this all day in the Pro/Am Rubber class. front all the way in the first race Kallee Dhein never blinked, keeping the Tryton Stewart finished fourth. Eichmiller did everything he could lap after lap to find a way of setting up Mueller, but it just didn’t work. Mueller ran a great race to finish second for that runner-up spot overall as well. The first three laps of the ProAm Rubber #25 Cody Funk went on to win the Junior motorcycle class. Quad class never really had a solid leader as CYCLE USA, March 2012 29

Nick Moelter, Colin Wilcott, and Mitchel Williams were side by side, and trading positions in each corner. After the opening laps, eventually they fell into that same order as Jordan Drexler joined the lead pack. Drexler took over third in the final lap, dropping Williams back a spot. It was just as close in the second race, maybe even more so. This time Wilcott had a small edge over Moelter, but it was still close enough at the finish line to have the scorers looking at each other. Wilcott got the big win, good for the overall (2-1) also. Just as close was the contest between Williams and Helgeson. Up to the last lap at that is, then spoiler Luke White pinched his way into it, and dropped Helgeson back to fifth. Jim Mullen led the first lap in Open C motorcycle class before Hayden Henry made a good inside pass. Mullen slid out in the next lap, but was up so quick he only lost one spot, letting Hanna Daniels get past for second. Matt Fisher finished fourth. Henry won the second moto as well for a clean sweep, another good ride for the Marshfield, WI rider. Mullen beat Daniels to the first corner and they ran that way to the end, Mullen then getting the advantage for second overall. The Outlaw Rubber Quad class always delivers a great show with the closest racing of

the day... and this race wasn’t decided until the very end, and only by a couple feet. Louis Plaskey nailed the start and then spent the first two laps trading places with Jeremy Flees. Then Plaskey had about a two quad advantage (very little in this class) as Flees was getting swallowed up by Scott Lindner and Nick Nett. The three of them were passing each other several times a lap, and trading places all the way to end, pulling up to Plaskey in the last two turns. Lindner had the best drive out of turns three and four to pull next to Plaskey as the charged for the checker flag. Plaskey held on with Lindner side by side, back half a quad length. Flees had to settle for third, just ahead of Nett and a fast charging Dan Lindner. Such good racing is impossible to really describe well enough. The second race was another “wow” type of spectacle. Plaskey and Lindner were swinging out wide, diving under, crossing lines, and all over the track looking for the best traction, neither clearly leading for more than a quarter lap at a time. If that wasn’t enough, the same type of action was all through the pack behind them.

CYCLE USA, March 2012

#4 Jamie Hanson won the 250/450 Pro class after a close race with #30 Russell Bradley and Ian Malinowski.

In the final lap, Lindner came back under Plaskey out of turn four, and just beat him to the checkered flag for the overall win. Dan Lindner pulled into the mayhem at the end as well, and finished third ahead of Nett and Cody Norris. In the B Rubber class, Nick Moelter had his hands full, but managed to win both motos just ahead of James Helgeson, Dustin Dix and Luke White. There was

still plenty of position swapping, but the top seven finished in the same order both races, something that almost never happens in non-studded racing. The day ended in the late afternoon, just perfect for everyone to slowly make their way home after spending a little more time hanging out in the pits. Another successful, and fun day at the races for sure!

Held annually during the second weekend of November, the District 16 Awards Banquet was another smashing success. A couple years ago the plan was put in place to move the activities to the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells. The 2010 banquet saw an increase in attendance, and 2011 was more of the same. More riders and their families joined us for the awesome dinner that took place half way through the evening’s awards presentations. There was also a large increase in the overall attendance as many took advantage of awards only ceremony tickets, while possibly having dinner at one of the local restaurants. At a time when many activities are doing well just to come close to year prior attendance, the crowds keep growing for the annual banquet. More riders are following the points chase, and the family friendly Kalahari Resort is proving to be a great place to come and celebrate another concluded season. Again this year a lot of awards were passed out to top finishers before dinner. After dinner the motocross and dirt track Lofquist Award winner Mike Vrana awards were handed out with D16’s Ron Blazek and Danny Vrana

This is a self supporting sport that is only made possible because of enthusiastic clubs, promoters, and volunteers. After all the meetings are finished, everyone runs off to get

ready for the fun part of the evening, the dinner and awards presentations. This is when all the smiles and good times that get shared make the season’s hard work worth it. Rider and their families often make sacrifices to chase a summer filled with dreams at the events, the district volunteers give many hours to support those riders and

events, and this banquet brings it all together in a very cool celebration. After all is finished in the evening’s planned activities, everyone catches their breath, and finishes the night off in their own way. Kids are often back off to the water park, or any one of the many other indoor fun options. Some will kick back in

their rooms to have their own smaller parties. The resort bar is famous for good times that will run into the next morning, and for all practical purposes, the District 16 crowd takes the place over and mixes with the others for what always becomes a wide open night of fun, and more memory making.
