The Bridge to Nowhere Lodge is a unique place. Located deep in the Whanganui National Park wilderness region, we are the only Whanganui River accommodation of this kind in the area. Perched high above the river and surrounded by native bush the only access is by the lodge’s jet boat service, canoe, by foot or helicopter.

Bridge to Nowhere Campground privately owned

We are 9km or 1 1/2 hours paddling below the Mangapurua Landing where you probably stopped to walk into the Bridge to Nowhere.

The campground is about 100 meters up stream from our Bridge to Nowhere Lodge on the same side of the river, so if you are canoeing you will see it first.

The campground was fully upgraded in 2014.

Mountain Biking the Mangapurua/Bridge to Nowhere Track “If you only have the chance to do one adventure ride this year, this is the North Island’s best.

A range of options available including transport and accommodation to assist in organising your trip.

With accommodation bases in both Raetihi and at the river end of the bike trail, and with a jet boat transfer service we are able to look after all your transport and accommodation requirements. At the start of the ride you will be given a tour map indicating approximate times, places of interest and historic sites to see. How to find us To Pipiriki 30 minutes from Raetihi, 40 minutes from Ohakune. Drive down the main street of Raetihi and keep on going for about 30 minutes. You will reach the village of Pipiriki. Carry on straight through the village until you get to the cross roads. Turn right and our base is pretty much straight in front of you!

From Wanganui via the River Road. 1 1/2 - 2 hours travelling. Drive north out of Wanganui towards SH4 locally known as the Paraparas. 10 km out of Wanganui is the little village of Upokongaro. Carry on through the village and then take the second turn on the left. It is well signposted River Road, Pipiriki etc. Carry on until you reach Pipiriki and carry on to the cross roads. Turn left and our base is 30 meters in front of you!

areas, and camping spots. Recommended as a two-day trip, cyclists are able to truly enjoy the region’s friendly hospitality and stunning countryside. This route follows the Manawatu Scenic Route, the official scenic driving route.

Cyclists will be treated to some of the very best New Zealand has to offer, including soaring white mudstone cliffs in Mangaweka, the dramatic backdrop of the Ruahine Ranges and lush farmland along the Pohangina Valley terraces. This off-the-beaten-track ride takes you on a journey to discover hidden places and tucked away treasures, ranging from convivial country cafes and pubs; heritage sites, galleries and gardens to scenic reserves, day walks, swimming holes, glow-worm caves, picnic

The Ride, North to South Ride past the Mangaweka Campground and over the bridge. Expect to be greeted with incredible views of soaring white papa cliffs and magnificent cobbled river terraces.

8km from the start of Ruahine Road, you will find Mt Huia Farmstay and a further 2km from here is Mairenui Rural Retreat. Rangiwahia is only 10km from here and has public toilets, campsites and some amazing history. Back on the road, past Ruapuna Park & Museum, head down Te Parapara Road for some of the best scenic views. Be sure to check out the Ruahine Dress Circle Reserve, this attractive picnic spot sits on a riverbend and is surrounded by cliffs and dotted with waterfalls.

Lush farmland with the Ruahine Ranges as a backdrop greets you as you enter Main South Road. Stop for a break at Michael Bourke’s Wetlands, a series of ponds that are home to native birdlife and trout. From the start of Main South Road Apiti is 17km away but well worth the journey. Along the way, be sure to get your photo taken next to Conspicuous Road. Head to the Apiti Bar & Grill for a hearty meal, wander through Mageo Woodcraft & Gardens or camp at the Apiti Domain.

On from Apiti, head back up Oroua Valley Road and into Pohangina Valley East Road.

Be prepared for some amazing photographic opportunities as you wind your way down into the Pohangina Valley. 26km from here, you will find the small, basic Piripiri Campsite run by the Department of Conservation. Just down the 8 | Manawatu / Rangitikei / Whanganui / Taranaki

road is Springvale Gardens & Accommodation, then the Pilgrims Rest Tea Rooms (open on weekends) - home of the friendly deer named Chicken.

This area is rich in native bush and has a good range of bush walks for all abilities. Head down past the historic Komako Church and you will find Totara Reserve, a playground of native bush, glow worm caves, swimming holes and campsites with great facilities. 12km on from here is Raumai Reserve, a great place to cool off in the river, camp or use the restrooms.

Head down the road and turn left onto Pohangina Road (on weekends, a 5km detour into Pohangina Village is worthwhile to visit County Fayre, a community run tearoom and heritage display site, and the nearby Cartwheel Creamery, makers of artisan cheese). You will pass by Valley Road, which is home to the Pohangina Estate Winery. Next along the route is The Waterford CafĂŠ & Bar, offering a deck and gardens for summer dining, or a roaring fireplace indoors for the cooler months.

Continue down Pohangina Road for 8km and you will find the township of Ashhurst. Stop for coffee at Fusion Cafe, picnic on the Village Green or camp and explore Ashhurst Domain.

Ashhurst Inn offers all day dining and good accommodation. From Cambridge Avenue, turn left onto SH3 (Napier Road). Continue down towards the bridge, then pull off to the left before ducking down under the bridge and onto the first section of the Manawatu River Pathway. You’ll ride along for 3km before turning right onto Raukawa Road which will bring you back out onto SH3 (Napier Road).

Head along SH3, keeping to the shoulder, for 2.6km then turn left onto Te Matai Road. Follow Te Matai until Riverside Drive. Turn left down Riverside Drive and at the end of this road is the second section of the Manawatu River Pathway.

You’ll follow a gentle, undulating path that follows the Manawatu River into Palmerston North City for 6km. At the Fitzherbert Avenue Bridge, take the path under and around the bridge and head up Fitzherbert Avenue. 2km later and you will find yourself in The Square of Palmerston North City. Highlights of the inner city are the free WiFi, a smorgasbord of fantastic cafes and the unique arts trail offering up sculptures from all over the world. Make sure you visit Te Manawa Museum, Gallery and Science centre, also home to the New Zealand Rugby Museum.

This local favourite lets you experience four levels of trails on top of a scenic mountain range, and offers some of the best single tracks in the lower North Island. The Grade Two Jack Frost trail is a great option for less experienced riders, or check out About Time, Rocky or Berlin Wall for more action and technical riding. With access points at the top and bottom of the park, riders can choose to tackle the 4km backtrack up the mountain, or begin from the top via Scotts Road where you can park your car, unload your bikes and check out the multitude of trails on the information board.

Te Ara o Mahurangi mountain bike trail takes riders on a fast-paced downhill ride through 2km of ancient native bush, and is rated Grade Three.

Riders have the option of parking at Bridge Cafe and riding 1.6km up Hall Block Road, before starting their descent on this trail. Alternatively, at the top of Hall Block Road near the start of the trail there are turning bays where vehicles can drop off bikers wishing to get a head start and avoid the climb up Hall Block Road. Finish up with a delicious coffee or ice cold drink at Bridge Cafe, or wander off and check out some of the nearby bush walks.

NOTE: In colder months the trail can get slippery and becomes more of a Grade Four ride so care and experience is needed. This ride is not suitable for beginner riders due to some reasonably steep downhill sections. Currently this trail is best avoided after heavy rain as it can get very slippery and muddy.

A mixture of hills, open flats and gravel rides, this ride showcases the unique scenery of the Pohangina Valley and offers plenty of great stopping points along the way with awesome views. If you have time, pop in to Pohangina Valley Estate for some wine tasting. The Pohangina Road is mostly gravel, but worth the effort for the scenery. From Manchester Square in Feilding, head north on Kimbolton Road for 4.5km before turning right onto Colyton Road.

In 4km turn left onto Taonui Road, then take the second right onto Valley Road and follow this along for 11km, where it will exit onto Pohangina Road. Turn left onto Pohangina Road and head up through Pohangina Village.

From the village, continue for about 10km (on gravel road and some good climbs). Turn right onto Churchill Drive (you are back on sealed roads now) crossing the bridge and heading up past Totara Reserve (worth a stop for a swim, picnic or bush walk). At the end of Churchill Drive, turn right onto Pohangina Valley East Road, which is fully sealed. Head south down this road, all the way past Raumai Reserve to the end where you will meet Pohangina Road again.

Turn left onto Pohangina Road, and head south for 5km past The Waterford Cafe & Bar, until you get to Spur Road. Turn right onto Spur Road and follow it all the way through to Taonui Road. Turn left onto Taonui Road, then left again onto Colyton Road. At the end of Colyton Road turn left onto Kimbolton Road and head back into Feilding to complete your loop.

You need to be reasonably fit as there is a good climb to start off with and it is a reasonable distance to ride. Starting from the East at Bridge Cafe on Ballance Gorge Road, ride out of the carpark and across the road to Hall Block Road. over 6km to reach the first of the wind turbines where it becomes North Range Road. Go through the gate and continue along the gravel road through the windfarms ensuring that you leave all gates as you found them. Once you get to the Pahiatua Track Road, turn right and descend the long downhill to Aokautere. Turn left at the intersection to take the road through Summerhill and across the Manawatu River into Palmerston North City.

You will need transport to drop you off to the start of this ride, or alternatively you can do it as an out and back ride from Palmerston North.

Alternatively, park your car at the top of the Pahiatua Track and ride up North Range Road through the windfarm and back again.

NOTE: Caution needs to be taken, and this ride is best avoided in rough weather conditions, so please keep an eye on the weather report before setting out. Layered clothing is recommended to be prepared for all types of weather. It is not recommended that you do this ride if the wind is up. It is also not recommended that you bike through the Manawatu Gorge (SH 3), so please arrange transport to drive you out to this ride and drop you off. This is not a return ride. You start on Gorge Road and end in Palmerston North City.

www.ManawatuNZ.co.nz/bike An easy cycling trail from Foxton township to Foxton Beach following a shared walking and cycling pathway, this ride begins beside Foxton Primary School and leads you down to the sea-front, Manawatu Estuary, the boat ramp and the camping ground. To start, head along the path that runs alongside Ladys Mile for about 4km and takes you just inside the start of Foxton Beach township. About 500 metres from the town’s entrance, turn left onto the bike path that runs alongside the field and playground.

This pathway takes you down to Hartley Street, where you’ll ride past the Manawatu Marine Boating Club before joining a pathway again. Follow this pathway alongside the Manawatu River and in front of the riverfront houses. The bath will be a mix of limestone, and sealed sections. Follow the path through the pine trees and you’ll end up on Pinewood Road by the holiday park. You can access the

Manawatu Estuary from here, or head over to the park for some dirt tracks. From here, you can safely bike to the Foxton Beach entrance on Marine Parade, head to Simply Balmy Cafe on Signal Street or visit Mr. Grumpy’s and the Little White Rabbit on Seabury Ave. Foxton Beach is well known for water activities including kite boarding, and is also one of the best spots in NZ for observing migratory wading birds. There is a viewing platform along the promenade and expect to see a few keen enthusiasts with binoculars or telescope. Check out Wind Warrior Kitesports on Thomas Street for some stand-up paddleboarding action.

Manawatu River Pathway Grade:

Te Matai Road, Ruahine Street, Albert St, Centennial Drive (beside the Fitzherbert Bridge), Victoria Esplanade, Ruha Street and Maxwells Line.

www.ManawatuNZ.co.nz/bike This ride is a perfect family or beginners ride as it is all flat to mildly contoured, with some limestone sections as well as wide cement paths.

There are many access points to this trail, which runs for over 9kms between Maxwells Line in the West to Riverside Drive in the East. A new 3km section has been added between Ashhurst and Raukawa Road, with plans to link this to the existing path over the next two years, making over 22km of scenic tracks to explore alongside the river. When biking or walking the Manawatu River Pathway, take the chance to pop into the Victoria Esplanade which runs alongside the middle section of the Manawatu River Pathway.

With rose gardens, bird aviaries, BBQ facilities, a cafe, playgrounds, miniature train rides and duck ponds, there really is something for everyone, public toilets are also available here.

Great rides around Whanganui Matipo Park A recreational reserve with a mixture of native and exotic trees donated to the town by the Matipo Land Company in 1913. Walking and mountain bike tracks throughout and a 30 minute ride maximum, access from Brunswick Road, Whanganui.

Lake Wiritoa Head south on SH3 and turn right into Kaitoke Road. Continue on until you reach a car park by the forest, main gate and sign.

Routes are available and all are named and rated for grade of ease. There are 2.5km of trails and new ones under development all the time.

The 5ha of trails includes a stream and wetland area, and a route used by tuna (eels) migrating between the sea and lake. One of the trails is called Araheke, in recognition of that.

The tracks are signposted opposite the entrance to Lake Wiritoa and open to anyone.

Hylton Park Hylton Park has something to offer all riders as this is the cross country venue for the New Zealand Masters Games and the North Island School Secondary Championships. Trails are generally suitable for beginners to intermediate riders.

The level of difficulty greatly increases in wet conditions.

Access via Brunswick Road, Whanganui, on the right hand side opposite the Fertiliser Works. Park by the gate but please do not block the gate.

Araheke Mountain Bike Park The name “migratory path” refers to the tuna (eels) that use the Kaitoke river flowing from Lakes Pauri and Wiritoa through the MTB Park to the sea. They are an important source of food for the local Maori. The park has 9km of trail in two separate areas joined by a short section (300m) of road.

The access turnoff is signposted on State Highway 3, 3km south of the Whanganui River motorway bridge, onto Kaitoke Rd. It is another 3km to Lake Wiritoa Reserve carpark. There are toilets and a swimming area. Accommodation is available (camping and cabins) at the adjoining Scoutlands Campsite. Please be aware that walkers and dogs also use the tracks.

Lismore Forest is an operational forest so please take care at all times. Numerous trails have been developed and the most popular are signposted.

• Old Walking Track 20km North of Whanganui, from SH4 turn right into the Old Parapara Road and onto Mangaone Road. Park at the picnic area.

Begin your Mountains to Sea journey on the historic Ohakune Old Coach Road. The Ohakune Old Coach Road links a number of fascinating pieces of New Zealand¹s rail heritage through a spectacular part of Tongariro National Park. This section of the trail is full of variety combining purpose built cycle trail, the old cobbled coach road, gravel and paved rural backroads and tranquil indigenous forest. Stop along the way for spectacular photo opportunities at the historic Hapuawhenua Tunnel and Hapuawhenua viaduct.

Head on to Horopito, home of Horopito Motors aka ‘Smash Palace’, dismantlers of vintage cars dating from 1920’s through to the 1970’s. From Horopito make your way to the idyllic Ruatiti Domain, starting from SH4, travel down Shorts Hill before following the Orautoha Stream and then the Maunganui-a-te-o River to the Ruatiti Domain. There is a free camping ground here, excellent swimming and trout fishing in a delightful riverside setting.

From Ruatiti continue on your journey through the valley of abandoned dreams – to the legendary Bridge to Nowhere. For the most part the track generally follows the Maungapurua Stream. Aramoana Viewpoint

Te Awa O Whanganui - The Whanganui River is the second longest in the North Island after the Waikato, and the longest navigable river in the country. The river’s most spectacular scenery is in its middle reaches, between Whakahoro and Pipiriki, where it passes through a series of narrow gorges amidst one of the North Island’s largest areas of unmodified lowland forest, much of it part of Whanganui National Park. The Whanganui River Road follows the lower reaches of the river from Pipriki to Whanganui is the only cycle trail route alongside a river in New Zealand, with such richness of both cultural and natural heritage.

Hapuawhenua Viaduct

in 1934. Before the 1930s, almost all access to this remote area was via riverboat. A journey along the river road is a step back in time, revealing the heritage of local iwi, remnants of early European settlement and many historical landmarks and features.

Pipiriki signals the start of the Whanganui River Road section, an undulating country road journey it ends at the village of Upokongaro, from where it’s another 11km to Whanganui and a further 7km to Castlecliff on the Tasman Sea. Settlements and highlights along the Whanganui River Road include Jerusalem, Ranana, Kawana Flour Mill, Matahiwi, Koriniti , Atene, and not to be missed is the Aramoana Viewpoint.

The Gentle Annie This 136km ride takes cyclists from Taihape, the northern gateway to the Rangitikei District, across the Gentle Annie to Fernhill in the Hawke’s Bay. A remote, multi-day ride that traverses picturesque high country sheep stations, untouched rugged river valleys and boutique vineyards between the Central North Island and the East Coast. These two regions are worlds apart in their natural heritage and landscapes, offering a challenging but exhilarating ride that is not for the faint hearted. Bring your camping gear and experience the best of the magnificent Rangitikei and Hastings Districts. The climate is changeable so be ready for all weather conditions any time of the year. There are no towns between Taihape and the Hawkes Bay so good preparation is key to getting the most out of this spectacular trail.

Plan & Prepare The Gentle Annie cycle route is graded advanced due to a number of steep gradients. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Directions Starting from Taihape head north on Hautapu Street which morphs into Spooners Hill Road. At the Kaiewe Junction, turn right onto Pangatawa Road, left at Waikakahi Road (gravel) and left again on to Moawhango Valley Road (mostly gravel).

Turn right at the school in Moawhango and you’re on the Taihape Napier Road, which is fully sealed.

If you want to avoid the gravel at the start, go straight through the Kaiewe Junction, which connects directly to the Taihape Napier Road via Spooners Hill Road (note that this route is 1-2 km longer and hillier than the gravel option). After a couple of days challenging hill climbs and exhilarating descents you will be entering the Hawke’s Bay. The Taihape Napier Road ends at State Highway 50. Take care turning right here and ride 1 km to cross the Ngaruroro River bridge and connect with Hawke’s Bay Trails. From here you can follow the trail which follows stop banks to either Hastings or Napier.

This trail has a steep climb worthy of the Tour de France, but the reward is the unparalleled views from the summit of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Taranaki, Kapiti and the Ruahines.

The trail begins at Hunterville which is a good place for accommodation and supplies.

Head out of Hunterville on Ongo Road and turn left onto Aldworth Road, passing through farmland to State Highway One. To avoid the Highway it is possible to bike the gated section of the old road, opposite the entrance to Bruce Reserve. Turn right onto Mt Curl Road and climb steadily at first, and then steeply, to the summit.

(For those wishing to eschew the rigours of Mt Curl there is an alternative route via Leedstown Road).

At the bottom of a downhill, before turning onto Ruahine Road, there is a five minute walkway (marked) to a dam that in times past provided power and water to Mangaweka. On the other side of the road are the remains of the old powerhouse and a view through to the train viaduct over the Rangitikei River. Soon after the right turn onto Ruahine Road, the Rangitikei River is crossed and immediately on your left is the Mangaweka Domain, an ideal spot for camping and swimming.

This is a hilly ride but well worth the effort.

Turn off SH1 at the Mokai Gravity Canyon sign onto Gorge Road. Immediately after the turn off, a small bridge crosses the Hautapu Stream. As with other bridges in the area it is well worth a look down. Head straight ahead up Gorge Road and then down to the bridge crossing the Rangitikei River. Here views of the Rangitikei canyons are at their best.

Turn right onto Omatane South Road where a short, sharp ascent will test even the fittest.

Potaka Road is gravel and a steady climb, but this is compensated with an exhilarating downhill, still on gravel, into the picturesque Kawhatau River valley. Once the Kawhatau River is crossed there is a short climb and a right turn onto Kawhatau River Valley Road.

This is a day in the country which starts and ends on the Rangitikei River. Cross the bridge over the Rangitikei River at the Mangaweka Domain and follow the Mangawharariki River on Ruahine Road towards Rangiwahia. On a fine day there are views of the Ruahine Ranges all the way. At 11 km from SH1 a 2 km (return) side trip can be taken to the Ruahine Dress Circle, an attractive picnic spot with a waterfall.

There is a small settlement at Rangiwahia which boasts a basic camping ground (but no shops). At the historic Pemberton corner, turn right onto Mangamako Road. From here the route largely descends towards Sandon Block Road. Sandon Block Road is gravel, and winds its way up and down through farmland and bush with views of the Rangitikei River in the distance.

The trail crosses SH1 and follows Tangimoana Road, McDonell Road and Tangimoana Road south to Tangimoana. There is a camping ground in Tangimoana with small cabins to rent. The trail turns left onto Tangimoana Beach Road and then right at the sign to the launching ramp. After that a first left turn leads onto a sandy track to the beach. The trail heads south for 8 kilometres along the coast to Himatangi. The sand can be soft – the best time to ride is within 2 hours each side of low tide. Trail 4 starts in Marton. The hills are left behind and the vast Rangitikei plain is flat all the way to the sea. The trail heads south out of Marton on Wellington Road turning left onto Makirikiri Road. After the intersection of State Highway 1 there is a short section on SH1 leading to the intersection of SH1 and Kakariki Road.

The trail follows Kakariki Road in an easterly direction as it drops down the terraces to the Rangitikei River and then ascends to the intersection with Mingaroa Road. It then follows south along Mingaroa, then Wilson Road until it turns west into Hurst Road (gravel).

At the top of Hurst Road, the trail turns left and heads south along Wightman Road until it reaches SH1. A detour can be made to the shops and cafĂŠs in Bulls which is the last town on the cycle way before Himatangi.

Access to the mountain bike trail is via a car park at the end of Plantation Rd (off SH3, just south of the lake’s main entrance).

Lake Mangamahoe’s purpose-built downhill and cross-country mountain biking trails can be used by riders of all abilities with different trails of varying difficulty and distance.

History Taranaki’s history was indelibly shaped by the actions at Parihaka Pa, where passive resistance was first used to great effect under the leadership of Te Whiti O Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi. In protest to the confiscation of their lands, the people of Parihaka used non-violent protest to delay the construction of the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, until 40 members of the Armed Constabulary were stationed there to ensure its completion.

Forgotten World Highway

New Zealand’s oldest heritage trail and the country’s quietest State Highway Following ancient Maori trade routes and pioneering farm tracks through varied scenery to provide cyclists with what’s regarded as one of the best touring routes in the country.

It begins in Taumarunui, a great base to explore the adventure opportunities of the Whanganui River and surrounding forest areas.

If you have more time to dedicate to this area, a drive of around half an hour to an hour in other directions from Taumarunui takes you to celebrated mountain bike trails of the 42 Traverse and the Timber Trail, which offers a family-friendly cycling adventure on much easier gradients.

Once here, allow extra time to explore the award-winning 12.7km New Plymouth Coastal Walkway that winds its way along the edge of the Tasman Sea, past world-class surf breaks and dynamic kinetic art. It is a short ride from the central city to the coastal precinct alongside Ngamotu Beach, where sporting events and a seaside market are hosted, along with those wishing to take in the sun sinking on the west coast horizon.

Taumarunui to Whangamomona Grade: Advanced Distance: 89.7km one-way The Forgotten World Highway is a challenging ride and you will need to be wellprepared as there are very few food stops (none until Whangamomona), but the ride is gaining rave reviews for its scenery, connection to the real New Zealand and very low traffic count.

You’re likely to meet more wild animals than other vehicles along the route.

There are plenty of points to stop and explore scenic, natural, or historic points of interest and discover the stories of the pioneering farmers who sought to conquer this land. Whangamomona is the main settlement, roughly at the half-way mark.

With a population of 30, the village declared itself a republic in 1989 and offers a range of accommodation options, centred round the iconic Whangamomona Hotel.

Highlights of this part of the ride are the beautiful bush-lined Tangarakau Gorge and the Tahora Tunnel – also known as the Hobbit Hole – which is lined with fossilised shellfish.

Access: From Taumarunui, follow SH4 west. Cross the Ongarue River and turn left on SH43. Follow SH43 - the Forgotten World Highway.

Food: Plan in advance and go well prepared, particularly as there are few food options between Taumaranui and Whangamomona and

the Whangamomona Hotel may be closed on Mondays (or other days) through winter. Lauren’s Lavender Café is 15km from Taumarunui while the Whangamomona Hotel is 87km from Taumarunui.

Accommodation: Whangamomona Hotel. This offers hearty meals and Bed and Breakfast/ dining options. Free WiFi A large portion of the ride has no cell coverage at all.

Trail surface: Varied/sealed and gravel sections.

86% sealed road, 14% gravel road.

The Ride: The ride includes hill climbs and gravel sections, and is on a State Highway 43.

This isn’t your usual State Highway however, it is the quietest State Highway in New Zealand with approximately 200 cars using the main section per day. Suitable for fit and experienced cyclists with good on-road and/or off-road skills, the route heads over hilly farmland for 30km before climbing over Paparata Saddle, with its sweeping views of the mountains of the central North Island. It then drops down into the native forest of the Tangarakau Gorge, a beautiful bush-lined gorge where there is 12km of smooth gravel. Road bike tyres can usually cope, but it is not always easy, especially when the road has just been graded. Beyond the gorge there is a moderate climb to the Moki Tunnel (known locally as the Hobbit’s Hole) which is lined with fossilised shellfish. You then head over Tahora Saddle where accommodation is available, followed by a long and gentle downhill ride to the settlement of Whangamomona.

Whangamomona to New Plymouth Grade: Advanced Distance: 93km one-way Access: Head northwest on Upper North Whangamomona Rd/Whangamomona Rd toward State Highway 43.

Food: Lepperton Store, 40m off route at Lepperton, Bell Block shopping centre, 100m off route at Parklands Drive, numerous options in New Plymouth Accommodation: a former school house at Purangi, some 31km after Whangamomona.

Trail surface: 75% sealed road, 16% gravel road, 8% sealed pathway About: The continued journey along the Forgotten World Highway takes you through true back country before deviating through farmland to the Taranaki coast, finishing on New Plymouth’s stunning Coastal Walkway. Some 30km from Whangamomona is Purangi, and as you pass through the town you’ll see kiwi signs

– there’s the East Taranaki Environment Trust Kiwi and native bird sanctuary nearby. The Trust started in 2005 and now has pest control over 13,000 hectares, achieving its target of 500 pairs of kiwi under protection.

The ride: 16km from Whangamomona turn off the state highway at the Pohokura Saddle and turn right onto Junction Road. You will need wide road tyres or mountain bike tyres since the first 16km of Junction Road is rough gravel. Junction Road passes through several original settlements including Purangi, where it becomes Tarata Road. The road is narrow, quiet and scenic. This is Kiwi country. The route continues over Tarata Saddle. Turn right onto scenic Otaraoa Road, which leads through the Tarata Tunnel. From here it is largely downhill to the turnoff left onto Tikorangi Road, 10km after the tunnel. Turn right onto Ngatirimu Road, turn left into Bertrand Road, to the historic Bertrand Road Swing Bridge across the Waitara River. Watch for the speed bumps on either side of the bridge. Turn left onto Waitara Road, right onto Cross Road.

Turn right onto Kelly Road, left on to Manutahi Road, passing through Lepperton and across SH3A. You will pass the Sentry

Whangamomona Township was established in 1895, and with a large amount of agricultural, road and railway work available, the town soon became quite prosperous.

The Whangamomona Hotel has always been the focal point for the district – surviving the Great Depression when it was once sold with the incoming publican’s wife as part payment.

From the 1960’s, the population of Whangamomona started to shrink, with a major fire destroying many of the buildings on the main street, and the completion of the railways causing many men to lose their jobs.

In 1989, the Hotel became the place where the citizens of the town met to declare Whangamomona a republic, after Wellington bureaucrats had placed half the community in the new Manawato - Wanganui region, and left the other half in the Taranaki region.

At the Tangarakau Gorge you will find the simple grave of Joshua Morgan, which has become a memorial to all the original surveyors who spent their lives working in harsh conditions to pave the way for the roads

Born in 1858, Morgan was a surveyor and true pioneer – often venturing into bush areas where no white man, or even Maori, had been. Morgan was a staunch supporter of the ancient Roman method of making the roads as straight as possible, and so favoured piercing through ridges with tunnels instead of undertaking the difficult climbs up and down the hills.

He proposed seven tunnels – five to replace the Pohokura, Whangamomona, and Moki Saddles, and two west of Whangamomona. These were rejected mainly because of the cost, and also because they would completely side-step the Whangamomona Township. But the Moki Tunnel, Morgan’s pet scheme, was finally formed in 1936. He died at age 35, and was buried where he died by the members of his camp, only 200 yards from the highway he helped peg. His wife Anne never re-married, and, although she moved to Auckland, her dying wish 60 years later was for her ashes to be buried beside the man she never ceased to love.
