Over 240,000 tourism jobs at stake in the Western Cape T least one in 22 jobs in the Western Cape will be lost if national government does not intervene to save the tourism industry. The province contributes over 24% to South Africa’s overall tourism share. Said Western Cape Provincial Parliament member and DA spokesperson on Finance, Economic Opportunities and Tourism Deidré Baartman in a June 14 statement: “In

A

excess of R65-billion is generated in tourism revenue by the Western Cape. “This represents 248,872 tourism-related jobs, with up to 50% of all tourism businesses projected to close in the province. We cannot wait until only next year for a gradual, safe reopening of our tourism industry - too many lives and livelihoods are at stake.” National Tourism minister Nkhensani Kubayi-Ngubane has not given a breakdown of any concrete plan to safely reopen the industry. The absence of her department in this way effectively leaves hundreds of thousands of households out to dry. Baartman added: “I have noted that the

Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) has developed a comprehensive framework to safely open the tourism sector in line with government’s risk-adjusted approach to Covid-19. “The TBCSA protocols indeed match the recommendations of the World Health Organisation, and ought to be welcomed by minister Kubayi-Ngubane.” Over 1,000 tourism-related companies have applied for UIF TERS, with many more already undergoing liquidation or planning to do so. National government has allowed for tour guiding, hunting, hiking, recreational fishing, and canoeing and kayaking to take

place under lockdown level 3. But at the same time, it cuts off the tourism supply chain by keeping the market closed, even though other countries, which have faced worse conditions under the pandemic, have gradually reopened, including Italy, Spain, and Tunisia. Baartman concluded: “In addition to requesting a briefing of tourism stakeholders at the provincial Covid-19 Ad Hoc Committee, I have now also written to provincial Finance and Economic Opportunities minister David Maynier, requesting details of his engagements with national counterparts and an update on support provided to tourism in this province.”

Plett’s world heritage site is open for business again OBBERG Nature Reserve offers one of the most important and iconic experiences on the Garden Route. This natural monument and world heritage site, managed by CapeNature and normally frequented by thousands of local and international tourists, has been closed since the national C-19 lockdown. But since its reopening on Friday June 12, locals are looking forward to a probable boost in tourism numbers during Level 3 lockdown. “We cannot underestimate the impact that nature and the environment play in our Garden Route tourism industry, and particularly for Plettenberg Bay,” says Plett Tourism CEO Marius Venter. “When CapeNature contacted us last week, we were overjoyed and positive that SA Tourism is cautiously reopening and that the constant lobbying by organisations such as SATSA and the TBCSA is key to the survival of our industry. “We are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and are confident that it will be nothing short of spectacular,” says Venter. Owner-manager of Beacon Isle KwikSpar Duncan Brown agrees that the opening is a huge benefit for the town. “Being one of the closest businesses to Plett’s most popular beaches as well as Robberg Nature Reserve has its benefits. Our turnover was impacted negatively by the closure of these areas during lockdown. “Robberg serves as a desired and popular destination not only for our residents, but also for ‘local’ tourists. As a business we would certainly benefit from this because it also meets social distancing requirements.” BI KwikSpar, like so many of the other local businesses in Plett, is a mere 1.3km or 4-minute drive from Robberg. Tour operator Luckz Mdzeke says: “Robberg is such an important part of my business. My clients just love it, and they see so much beauty during their visit, which along with its historical value makes for an incredible experience. “I was raised in Plett and can honestly say

that Robberg is home to me. I want to share this with the world.” Additionally, the mental health of locals is deeply impacted by the ‘berg. “Many locals need Robberg. It is important for us to know that it is open because it is our ‘go-to’ place, not only physically but also mentally. “It’s like a warm blanket on a cold day, feeding the mind, body and soul,” says local chiropractor Dr Grant Butterworth. Like many locals, Dr Butterworth and his family hike or picnic at Robberg several times per month. Long-time resident, owner of Bobbin Craft upholstering, and multi-awarded sporto Steph le Roux averaged four trips around Robberg per week prior to the lockdown. When it comes to the reserve, you can consider him an absolute connoisseur. A veteran adventure racer, he has participated throughout the country for locally sponsored teams including both the BUCO and Plett Tourism adventure racing teams. He was granted a special permit by Plett Tourism and Bitou Municipality to photograph his Robberg experiences to assist with destination marketing endeavours during lockdown. “During my walks and runs on Robberg, I see myself somewhat of a tourism ambas-

sador. I can’t help myself; I often point out wildlife, fynbos and flora to tourists or stop to show them marine life and other creatures that I have trained myself to find over the years. “I’m an extra set of eyes for the Robberg Nature Reserve Team, alerting visitors to areas that may have suddenly become dangerous due to the environment, report on wildlife that has been scarce, or just provide general information,” says Le Roux. According to CapeNature, both the Keurbooms River and Robberg Nature Reserve reopened on June 12, with limited times and appropriate permits. Keurbooms River slipway is open for boats with valid annual boat permits from 8am to 4pm to accommodate recreational fishermen. Visitors are not allowed to water-ski or braai on the picnic sites as these activities are excluded by Level 3 lockdown regulations. Robberg Nature Reserve is open for anglers, hikers and trail runners, but one needs to book online as there is a limit of 120 people per day, including Wild Card holders. Fortnight of chaos in Knysna Municipality followed by the filling of two key positions Knysna finally has a new mayor, following the removal of the town’s former first citizen, Mark Willemse, in September last year - YOLANDÉ STANDER reports HE election of Cope councillor and former teacher Ricky van Aswegen as mayor was not the only new appointment in Knysna over the past week; the town also now has a new acting municipal manager. This comes in the wake of two weeks of political turmoil in Knysna which saw the resignation of some of

the town’s top officials and a council meeting walk-out by several officials over various issues. Knysna was plunged into chaos on May 28 when former acting municipal manager Michele Gratz, along with the town’s chief financial officer and Ward 10 councillor Peter Myers, announced their resignations.

During her resignation speech, Gratz quoted several reasons for her decision including that the municipality was “broken” and paralysed, and that attempts to address these issues were being hampered by “outside forces”. Following her resignation there were calls, including from the DA, that the mu-

After Bouw-Spies was ousted, DA members left the chambers without voting for a new mayor. Willemse was nominated for the position and the majority of the remaining councillors voted in his favour. This led to two votes of no confidence in Willemse by his fellow caucus mem-

bers. These however failed and Willemse remained in the position until his membership termination. Willemse then sought relief from the Western Cape High Court in the form of an interdict to place his suspension on hold. This attempt, however, failed in March this year.

was not prioritised, several DA councillors walked out of the meeting before the budget could be approved. Knysna municipal spokesman Christopher Bezuidenhout confirmed that Gratz’s resignation was accepted and that her final day at the office was on June 11. On Thursday last week, another special council meeting was held, during which not only her [acting municipal manager’s] position was filled, but also the

post of the mayor. Following an ANC and Cope coalition, Van Aswegen was voted into the mayoral seat, which has been vacant since Willemse was ousted in September last year [see box below]. Dr Louis Scheepers - said to be an experienced local government practitioner with more than 20 years’ experience under his belt - was appointed as acting municipal manager. Garden Route Media

Opera Angel joins Kwano-based baritone for two Sundays of top entertainment DVERSITY sometimes creates opportunity, and having been deprived of performing arts of late, we are now in for a treat this according to Lady Annabelle Conyngham, who has over the years been responsible for organising an extensive range of concerts for the enjoyment of local music lovers. “After the disappointment of having to cancel the Opera Angels performance on Easter Sunday, I am delighted to announce that on this Sunday, June 21, and the following Sunday two concerts, Amazing Grace and Cantiamo, will be livestreamed from St Peter’s

Church Hall at 6pm as part of the Plett Arts Festival. “Dr Lisa Engelbrecht, soprano and one of the Opera Angels who delighted many of us in February this year, will perform with our very own home-grown baritone Bathande Mike Bayibhile, who hails from KwaNokuthula. “I have greatly enjoyed attending the rehearsals and I do encourage you all to tune in from the comfort of your homes and thus support the artists themselves, Hospice Plett, and the St Peter’s Church outreach programmes,” says Annabelle. Visit www.plett-tourism.

Plett-based baritone Bathande Mike Bayibhile studied at the University of Fort Hare for a Bachelor of Music degree under wellknown voice teacher Gwyneth Lloyd. He had also previously studied as a tenor under the late Professor Sidwell Hartman at UCT’s College of Music. Not only was Mike a prize winner in the SA Tertiary Choral Eisteddfod of 2014 and 2015 in the solo and duet sections for tenors, but also overall winner of the SATICA OR Tambo Choral Festival in the bass/baritone category for two years running. Mike sang the leading role of Eisenstein in Johan Strauss’s Die Fledermaus, accompanied by the Stuttgart Academic Orchestra from the University of Stuttgart when they toured South Africa. He performed with the Eastern Cape Opera Company as one of its soloists from 2015 until its closure in 2019. He has toured with choirs throughout SA and conducted his church youth mass choir since 2013, as well as having coached school choirs in the Eastern Cape region. This is the first time Mike will be collaborating with Dr Lisa Engelbrecht in recital.

Pianist/soprano Dr Lisa Engelbrecht is a renowned musician in both South Africa and Europe, where she regularly performs and coaches specifically in London at the Royal College and Academies of Music, and Trinity Laban at the University of Greenwich. She is the operatic vocal coach at UCT’s Opera School, where she also lectures in Lyric Diction. Lisa initially received her B. Mus degree in piano performance at UCT but went on to study voice in Milan with Virginia Borroni and completed an opera diploma at the Conservatoire di G Verdi. She decided to fuse her skills as singer and pianist when she was accepted on a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music for a post-graduate diploma in Higher Performance for Répétiteurs in 1998. She subsequently coached for the Jeunes Voix du Rhin opera programme in Strasbourg, The Renata Scotto academy in Savona, Italy, The Merola (San Francisco Opera), and Glimmerglass (upstate New York). In the USA, she embarked on a Masters in Vocal Accompaniment at the University of Illinois under accompanist John Wustman. She returned to SA mid-2002 and embarked on her D. Mus, achieving her Doctorate in Collaborative Musical Performance in 2008 before moving to the Opera School, where she has been musical director of a number of semi-staged concerts. Lisa is musical director of Opera in Darling, which introduces the genre to wider audiences throughout the Western Cape and abroad. She is also part of the dynamic Cape Town-based Opera Angels duo alongside British mezzo soprano Lindsay Thomson. Following their debut performances upon the Cunard’s Queen Victoria world cruise early in 2019, Opera Angels have been in demand countrywide. They create unique programmes that encompass many musical genres, whether it be an introduction to opera, an evening of cinema greats, or a taste of Italy. Lisa also accompanies many young professional opera singers in recital both in South Africa and in Mauritius under the auspices of Société Musicale de l’île Maurice.

Have a laugh with Dad on Father’s Day, June 21 • Becoming a father is easy enough, but being one can be very rough. Father’s Day is just like Mother’s Day, except on Father’s Day you buy a cheaper gift - although an iPad would be nice, most fathers will settle for 20min of silence. • I know what I’m getting for Father’s Day. Last night my daughter asked me what size aftershave I wear. • I asked my father for his best dad joke and he said: “You.” • My son wants 50% of my Father’s Day gifts. He says if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t even be a father. • A girl was at the zoo with her dad. They were looking at the tigers and her father was telling her how ferocious they were. “Daddy, if the tigers got out and ate you up…” “Yes, my girl?” the fa-

ther asked, ready to console her. “…Which bus would I take home?” • Son: “For 20 bucks, I’ll be good.” Dad: “Oh, yeah? When I was your age, I was good for nothing.”

• Dad: “You will never amount to anything because you procrastinate.” Son: “Oh yeah? Just you wait!” • Sue: “I made a bad mistake today and gave my dad some soap flakes instead of corn flakes for his breakfast.” Jan: “Was he mad?” Sue: “Yup. He was foaming at the mouth!” • Q: How do you know your dad is planning for the future? A: He buys two cases of beer instead of one. • Most fathers want their kids to have things they never had, like As on their report cards. • Being a great father is like shaving. No matter how well you shaved today, you have to do it again tomorrow.

• Dad: “How do you like fourth grade?” Son: “It isn’t much fun.” Dad: “That’s too bad. It was the best three years of my life!”

The proud new father OM buys a round of drinks for the entire bar, announcing that his wife has just given birth to their first child, a baby boy weighing 24 pounds. He is showered with congratulations, along with many exclamations of “Wow!” Two weeks later, Tom returns to the bar. The bartender says: “Say, you’re the father of the baby that weighed

24 pounds at birth. How much does he weigh now?” Proudly, Tom answers: “Eighteen pounds.” The bartender, puzzled and concerned, asks: “Why? What happened? He already weighed 24 pounds at birth.” Tom takes a slow swig from his beer, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans into the bartender and proudly says: “Had him circumcised.”

Query from Cape Town regarding Plett crime answered by commander in chief My wife and I live in Cape Town and are selling our house with a view to moving to Plettenberg Bay, where we hope to buy a house and retire. However, we have recently been advised that the crime rate has gone up in Plettenberg Bay and it is becoming rather untenable. We, obviously, do not want to move there and find the crime stories true. So basically, as somebody in the know, could CXPRESS fill us in on the situation there, please? Is the crime any worse than elsewhere in South Africa? We lived in Johannesburg years ago and experienced a break in. In Cape Town, we have had our car broken into twice - is it any worse there? I hope you do not mind me writing to you as I thought it would be good to get the story from the horse’s mouth. Thank you very much in advance. John Irvine, Cape Town CXPRESS forwarded John’s query to Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) chairman Bruce Richardson, who furnished us with the following response: Good day John, your email to CXPRESS has been referred to me for reply in my capacity as chairman of the Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association. I am not sure where you have received your information from but it could not be further from the truth. Plettenberg Bay is certainly the only town in South Africa (and possibly in the world) that has succeeded in reducing crime by approximately 60% over the past seven-

year period, and is consequently the safest town in the country, with very low crime rates and hardly any violent incidents. What crime we do have is largely of a petty nature. Women and children wander and cycle in our streets freely and safely even late into the evening. Having been involved in crime prevention in the town for about 14 years, I do not recall an incident that caused sufficient concern for us to recommend that they do not do so. That said, we obviously urge all our residents to follow the recommended internationally accepted crime prevention protocols to avoid becoming victims of crime. Complacency and crime prevention never go hand in hand. Although our overall crime rate has been down over the lockdown period, we have had a nagging problem with the criminal element trying to take advantage of the fact that our active neighbourhood watches have been prevented from carrying out their normal patrols and activities by the lockdown regulations. This has resulted in more activity than normal around the town, but most of this activity has not translated into actual criminal incidents. Now that neighbourhood watches are back on the streets, we expect things to return to normal. You may be wondering as to how we have achieved these extraordinary results, so I will give you a brief rundown of who and what the PBCPA is. The PBCPA was formed about nine years ago and comprises the police, Municipal Law Enforcement, emergency and medical

services, a number of participating security companies, and our particularly active neighbourhood watch groups across the region, working together under a single highly interactive banner. The PBCPA has its own control room which is efficiently staffed 24/7 by competent personnel - the contact number is 082 251 8134. I strongly suggest that you enter that number on your cellphone in anticipation of your move to Plett. List it as ‘AAPBCPA’ so that it is the first item that comes up under your contacts should you face an emergency, or are concerned about some suspicious behaviour in your area. Calling that number and requesting help will result in the closest operative among the above group of organisations being despatched to your point of need. Depending on your location, help will arrive within a period of less than 3 minutes - probably a worldrecord beating response time, too. The number can also be used to call for medical help or other emergencies as the PBCPA is a highly interactive networked organisation. The performance of the security operatives working under the PBCPA is nothing short of extraordinary, as you will come to appreciate once you are living in our town. Efficient, prompt, easily-accessible and effective help at the touch of a cellphone button has become very much part of our lifestyle here, and does much to promote our wonderful “Plett - it’s a Feeling” mantra. The PBCPA has a fully trained and armed tacti-

cal reaction group operating under Plett Security (one of the participating organisations); a bulletproof vehicle to transport the tactical team, an armoured vehicle able to enter areas in which civil disorder is taking place, a military grade infra-red camera, a sophisticated drone with both infra-red night vision camera and laser-pointing technology, and many other resources. Although we do not have all areas covered as yet, CCTV is widely used with feeds into the PBCPA control room. All these attributes are offered at no cost to members, but we do request voluntary financial support, as it is an expensive exercise to maintain all these resources. Upon arrival in Plett, I suggest you register with the neighbourhood watch responsible for your particular area. They will place you on an interactive WhatsApp group, which will enable you to keep track of all activity in your area and call for assistance when required. All you need to do is email your name, cellphone number, residential address, and the name of the security company (if any) that takes care of your premises to plettwatchmembers@gmail. com and shortly thereafter the relevant WhatsApp group will come up on your phone. I trust you will now understand that we were somewhat surprised to receive your email. Plett is simply not a good place for criminals to operate in! If I can at any time be of additional assistance to you, please do not hesitate to give me a call on 076 956 9165. We look forward to welcoming you to our town.
