UNTAPPED TREASURE!
with BOB HOLLAND
One of the talking points this week has been the pay rise for Councillors. Our Councillors are divided over whether to accept the rise or not given the current financial climate. One point worth noting in the debate is that the rise came after a tribunal upgraded Orange Council’s rating, which in turn meant that our Mayor and Councillors are entitled to higher remuneration. To be fair, they didn’t just vote themselves a pay rise.

Something else that came out of last Tuesday’s Extra-ordinary Meeting was questions about Council spending $500,000 of taxpayer’s money to evaluate Mount Canobolas as a site for mountain bike activities. One of the main concerns being that Mount Canobolas is not in the Orange Council area. That should be interesting! A couple of Councillors at Tuesday’s meeting didn’t do themselves any favours with throw away comments like “too many gutless Councillors” and “go on, get it off your chest.” Very disrespectful and unwarranted in my view.
Mt Canobolas is a unique geographical phenomenon that Orange’s whole tourism industry should be “hooked” around, a life-time local and awardwinning photographer believes. Others including Orange Mayor, Councillor Reg Kidd agree, saying that the split responsibility for the subalpine mount and slopes between Orange and Cabonne Councils and the National Parks and Wildlife Service
has seen this landmark neglected for too long. “Orange needs something to hang its hat on. It’s there, let’s use it,” local identity John “Kichy” Kich said. “It’s special, it’s the highest point at this latitude between Sydney and South Africa,” he added. n Turn to page 2–3 for our special on the Mount. n See page 8–9 for John Kich’s photo essay on our greatest natural feature.
Curing the need for quality meats The art of cured meats including freshly-made salami, prosciuttos and cabanossis are now delighting local palates. Orange’s own Stefan Birmili (pictured) is looking to produce these in the district, if he can only find the right location. Go to page 5 for full story.

More news from Council that I am interested in is Council deciding to give away $50,000 worth of Shop Orange Gift Cards to help local businesses, and another $50,000 to help sporting clubs. I’m really interested to understand more about how that all works and how they came up with such a strategy. The Shop Orange Gift Card concept has always been anything but successful, but sadly we seem stuck with it. I’m still very interested in getting a discussion going about a Community Project involving the Botanic Gardens. On that, it’s a pretty simple and straightforward concept, one that will greatly benefit the gardens and Orange overall, so I’m keen to hear from one or more of our service clubs who might be interested in driving such a project with our help. You can read more about this in this week’s Orange City Life.

To continue the tradition of Orange City Life in bringing out the best in people, we started Newswatch a few months back because we felt our City deserved a free newspaper, now we’re launching Hearts for Orange to take the next step, hoping to rally more people to love and support our City even more in areas that matter, especially to help us through these trying times.

It seems that every time the topic of building more houses in Orange comes up, the issue of water follows right on its heels. Wouldn’t you think that given the history of Orange’s water issues, this issue would have been dealt with once and for all before this? Surely this issue is an absolute basic and a MUST to be addressed VERY soon. I wonder if we have at least one Councillor with the smarts to know what needs to be done and then drive it. Might be hoping for too much before the next Council election. Speaking to a business owner this week, I discovered he was doing quite well despite the Covid issue. He’s a butcher and he said more people are staying home, so buying meat and cooking at home is helping his business. Nice to hear from someone who’s benefitting from all the pain for a change, so many are on the other side of the fence. While on that, those of us who are travelling OK should keep an eye and ear out for those who could do with a helping hand. The times are such that there must be a growing number of people who through no fault of their own find themselves in very tough circumstances. Let’s not be backward in stepping forward when we see or hear of any opportunity. There’s a long and pointed letter on our Back Page this week and I commend it to you. Although it sounds like the very same song I’ve been singing, I didn’t write it. We can’t all just ignore the facts raised in this letter forever. I hope by this time next week that many people are starting to talk about our Hearts for Orange project. It a new project we’re launching in this issue of Newswatch, and its purpose among other things, is to encourage those who live in and love Orange to make a greater effort to support it in very tangible ways. See pages 8 and 9 for more.
