Thank you to our Sponsors:

Orange City Life is grateful to the following sponsors for their ongoing support over many years. These sponsorships, among other things, have enabled us to bring our readers a lot more enjoyment to our publications than would otherwise be possible. In return, we ask you to please support them as often as you’re able.

Thanks to those who have inquired after my health after getting knocked about by Covid. To the one reader who wrote in to correct me, remotely diagnosing my malaise as ‘4G & 5G technology’, I have to say that given that I can barely get any mobile reception from Optus inside the OC Life office I feel I’m pretty safe in that regard.

This week we welcome new features and the return of some popular competitions!

Starting on page 16 we have Healthy Life, the launch of our new monthly feature showcasing local businesses, products and services to help you stay active and healthy.

And on page 40 you will see we have launched a new weekly page just for our younger readers, ‘Kids Zone’. There you will find ‘Kids Talk’ interviews, puzzles, codes, word games and more. Please let us know what you think! We’d love to hear more suggestions from all you kids (or mums and dads) about what you would like to see in ‘Kids Zone’ each week.

In our last issue, I mentioned that we are shaking things up a little with our competitions and so inside you will see the return of ‘Name that Business”. As many long-time readers will remember, ‘Name that Business” involves you revealing the name of a local business using the clues provided. One lucky winner will receive a $20 voucher to spend at Coco’s Cafe or Pauls @ Coco’s.

We are also reintroducing ‘What am I Watching?’ a competition where you have the chance to win a double pass to the Odeon 5 Cinema each week! We’ll give you a date and session time of a movie we will be watching at the Odeon 5 Cinema and all you have to do is check the session listings inside this magazine and tell us the name of the movie that’s on at that time on that particular day.

And we haven’t forgotten ‘Face in the Crowd’! It will be back in our next edition. You will find the details of all our competitions on page 40.

Messages to Mum on Mother’s Day

From all of us at Orange City Life, we hope you mums out there had a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday. We know that there are so many mums out there doing an amazing job, but this Mother’s Day we thought we’d hit the streets and speak to a few local dads to find out from them what makes their partner such an incredible mum.

Phil and Nadia Donato

My wife is incredible. She’s raised five children, all boys, and has always been rock solid in terms of her love and support of her children and myself. We had all five in six years, and even giving birth to them in that timeframe is incredible.

Our youngest is nearly 21, but those early years are difficult. She always seemed to just manage it all. Her patience and tolerance have always been remarkable, and our amazing sons are an absolute credit to her efforts. Looking after them, raising the boys, feeding them and providing for them – I’m in awe of her.

From myself and the boys, thank you for everything you do. We couldn’t have done this without her.

Jason and Melissa Hamling

Melissa is an amazing, hard-working mum with a full-time job. She supports my council career and has always been accommodating with all the times I’ve had to go away over the past 20 years. With our sons, she’s doing a great job of rearing three gentlemen who are growing up to be three great men.

Her best parenting moments are often on the sporting field when things go wrong. She’s always very positive about what you can take out of that and learn for next time, and she’s the same in everyday life — teaching the boys to see the positives, to learn and put that into practice next time.

Our Mother’s Day message to Melissa/Mum is that we love you very much and we really appreciate everything that you do for all of us. You are the best mum a family could ever have.

Adriano and Jenna Grelli

Jenna is the most incredible mother. As a miner’s wife, she had to travel around the country and parent far away from our family. She’s able to take it all in her stride and raise our three beautiful kids while working herself and dealing with my shift schedule without an extended family support network. She’s amazing!

Our message to Jenna: from Levi, Layla and Amelia, we just want to say happy Mother’s Day, thank you for everything that you do for us.

Micheal Sobotta and Clair Whelan

Clair is just the most complete human I’ve ever met and is able to do everything that she needs to do to live her fullest life. She does a lot of self-care of exercise, yoga, reading and a great social group. She has had to work hard as a female surgeon in a male-dominated world. She’s had three children, and mothers them amongst everything else she does. Clair is an active community member in the CWA, Nashdale Hall and the local gardening group. There’s this whole question of “can women have it all?”, and for her it’s just that she embraces everything. She loves doing everything for her community, her children and everyone around her. Her best parenting moment is her ability to connect with each of our daughters with one-on-one time whilst doing something specific to them, and talk about what makes them good humans. Her goal as a parent is to make sure her children are kind and caring and decent human beings.

Our message to Clair is just that we appreciate her for who she is, for what she does for us, her family, and for things she does in the community. We just appreciate her for being her and we’re so very fortunate to have her in our lives as a partner, as a mum and as a friend.

Michael and Kylie Duncan

Kylie has always been an inspirational achiever. When we first met, she studied a double degree, worked, played 1st grade volleyball and had made the 2000 Olympic trials for track. I’ve never been more impressed than when, after years of stress, tears, hope and help from IVF, she birthed our first child. Her “nothing is too hard” attitude has been her “mum mantra” and that has rubbed off on our children by continuing to show them (blindly or bravely) that anything is possible whether by means of stubbornness and blunt-force effort. Her best parenting moment (so many comedic wife moments) would have to be her explaining to our eldest that his IVF “siblings” were being donated to another couple who needed help creating a family and he imagined five snap-frozen 7-year-olds in a glass front fridge and didn’t sleep for two days. He’s fine now and both understands and loves what we did.

Our message for Kylie/Mum, is to keep being courageous. It is deeply, deeply annoying at times how you go at life leading with your forehead (as beautifully large as it is) but somehow you “find a way” like Combat Carl. You continue to overcome. You inspire your daughter to run fast and hard like mum, you inspire your son to simply have a crack. You drive me crazy but I love you for it.

“It’s

great to be able to give something back”: CLINICAL TRIAL PATIENT CHRIS HELPING OTHERS LIKE HIM

“He said, ‘I’ll supply the truck and the fuel and you raise the money’,” says Chris Fieldus of the conversation he had with friend Peter Vardenega about taking part in the 2024 Cruisin’ Along Car Rally.

Founded in 2009 by former Orange Mayor, the late John Davis, the Cruisin’ Along rally has raised more than a million dollars for local charities over the last 16 years. Run under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Orange Daybreak, money raised on the tag-a-long car tours as they travel to various parts of the country has been instrumental in the establishment of the Cancer Care Western NSW Cancer Care Lodge and continues to fund vital clinical trials here in Orange.

Chris and Peter were joined by sons Jake Fieldus and Cameron Vardanega on the ten-day 2024 Cruisin’ Along rally, which returned to Orange from a loop to the Grampians and back on May 4.

On Friday, Chris and his team joined Rotarians at Orange Hospital where they

gladly handed over more than $50,000 raised on this year’s rally to the Orange Clinical Trials Unit.

“I think about $25,700 our car has made around the whole trek,” Chris said at the hospital on Friday.

“I’ve got three mates here, they come on board with me just to get on and be able to raise money, but it’s the local businesses that actually donated to us… It cost us to do the trek but it was the local businesses, as you can see with the stickers on our truck, they’ve come on board and donated and been just so generous.”

For Chris, this fundraising trip has had particular meaning as he has been living with cancer for the past 18 years and participated in multiple clinical trials himself.

“I was diagnosed with kidney cancer when I was 40 and I’m 58 this year… they removed a kidney, I’ve had two major surgeries. Then became a clinical trial patient when I was 50, and here we are — living proof that it actually works,” Chris said. “Being a clinical trial patient it’s great to be able to give something back.”

SATURDAY 18TH MAY

8PM - LATE FREE ENTRY

Dr Rob Zielinski, Director of the Orange Clinical Trials Unit, said they are extremely grateful for the community support of the work they are doing. He said every $10,000 raised means another patient has the opportunity to be part of a trial that could save their life and lead to better treatment for other cancer sufferers.

“The trial workforce, we do it for lots of reasons – passion and looking after patients – but it’s so powerful to have the community and patients like Chris raising money for us,” Dr Zielinski said.

“It gives us that extra kick to really work harder and do more and it’s lovely knowing, we’ve got this massive support behind us.”

In the decade since trials started in Orange, more than 300 patients have taken part. Dr Zielinski said most trials have been drug therapy, but others have looked at radiation treatment plans, medical cannabis and appetite-increasing drugs as well. Currently, he said, there are 50 patients participating in 15 active trials.

“Year on year it’s just increasing,” he said. “Patients, mostly, love being part of that frontier of medicine I have to say and

they love knowing that they’re tapping into potentially the next generation drugs early… I kind of find that really exciting personally as a doctor as well.

“We are changing practice for the benefit of not just Australian patients, but global patients.”

While Chris has seen a benefit from the experimental treatment he received in the trial — he is still undergoing regular treatment for his cancer.

“You’ve just got to move on,” Chris said when asked how he’s coped with the ups and downs over the past 18 years. “Move on and live life to its fullest and enjoy what you have. That’s how I get through it.”

“I tell you what,” added Dr Zielinski. “I’ve learned a lot from my patients about that for my own philosophy of life as well and that’s how I try and adapt my life, to living for the day as much as we can.

“Because these guys, their world gets turned upside down within moments of the scan or a blood test showing them things have changed. So I learn a lot from these guys as well.”

Orange Inventor hoping StraightShooter hits the mark at US golf show

range inventor Michael Middleton is taking his StraightShooter golf training aid to the USA where he will join other entrepreneurs in pitching his device to a panel of investors, manufacturers and business leaders.

Michael has been formally developing and marketing the product in Australia since 2015, but a trip to the USA in January saw the StraightShooter attract interest from one of the biggest innovation events in golf, the Golf Pitch Challenge by Signature GP.

“The future of StraightShooter is in America,” Michael said. “The American golf market is the big market and there’s people showing interest in us, so we’re going back.

panel comprised of industry leaders including world-renowned golf coach David Leadbetter and entrepreneur Kevin Harrington, one of the original “sharks” on US television’s Shark Tank.

“There’ll be a big range of people in manufacturing, marketing, inventions… So we will be in our element,” Michael said.

Did you know that unclaimed optical health fund benefits don’t roll over into next year?

“They’ve suggested it’s similar to Shark Tank, So I’ve been practising… concentrating on making sure I’ve got my pitch refined so that I can answer any of those questions.”

but we just need help with the marketing process,” he said

“We’re going with the idea that there’ll be somebody there, they’ll pick us up and help us take this to the golf world.”

To the golf world and maybe beyond, Michael adds, saying he has had interest in the StraightShooter’s application to other sports.

“When we were at the golf show in Orlando in January, the first group of inventors that I approached commented, ‘Have you thought about this in baseball?’,” he said.

unclaimed optical benefits don’t roll over

His invention, the StraightShooter, Michael describes as a “flexible lead arm guide”. It is a training aid, he says, that solves one of the biggest problems in a golfer’s swing which is slicing and having your club face open at the contact point.

The StraightShooter training aid is worn on the lead arm and contains specially calibrated springs to help correct a golfer’s

“We’ve been selected to go and present StraightShooter at the golf pitch challenge in Orlando on the 21st of May and we’re quite excited and thrilled about that!”

Founded in 2023, the idea behind the Golf Pitch Challenge is to find the “next big thing” in golf; new innovative products that help golfers on the course.

Inventors invited to the event get the chance to showcase their idea to a judging

Michael said they will have three to five minutes to pitch the idea and then there will be another five minutes answering questions.

The StraightShooter works, says Michael, who is hoping the judging panel will see the value in his idea.

“The thing works, all the experts that have measured it and so on say this thing works,

“And pickleball… We’re doing research on pickleball in the Hunter Valley at the moment. Pickleballs taken off in America, it’s really big. So potentially any arm-related sport, Straightshooter has got a possible application.”

Michael will be pitching the StraightShooter at the Golf Pitch Challenge in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, May 21.

Bella marking her mark on Fashion Week

Orange local Isabella Hoyle Davies always wanted to study fashion.

“I always loved drawing people and then drawing clothes and cutting around them and pasting them

on figures and things like that,” she said.

So when Bella was selected to feature her collection on the 2024 Australian Fashion Week runway in Sydney, it was a dream come true.

“I really enjoyed this whole process, I’ve had so much fun this year,” Bella said.

Bella graduated from Kinross Wolaroi

School in 2019, taking a gap year in 2020. She said her textile teacher at school took her class on an excursion to Sydney, where they did a tour of the TAFE in Ultimo.

“I just really loved it, and I always wanted to go there during school, and it ended up happening,” Bella said.

Bella studied at the TAFE NSW Fashion Design School and graduated at the end of last year. Each year, TAFE NSW produces a show, where they pick around six students to showcase their work.

“Teachers select students to pitch new concepts for fashion week, and then they decide from there who they actually want on show,” she explained.

Bella’s fashion design collection was featured on Tuesday (May 14) at the highly anticipated ‘The Innovators’ show at the 2024 Australian Fashion Week in Sydney, alongside some of the industry’s biggest names.

Exhibiting under her label ‘Bella Davies’, Bella will be showcasing a collection that embraces contemporary textile artistry, while also blending femininity and creative expression.

“It’s based on the concept of personal space, and using clothing, shapes and silhouette to keep distance between the wearer in their environment around them,” she said.

While the ‘Bella Davies’ label is not currently selling anything, Bella is looking at starting to release small, limited drops of certain garments for people to enjoy.

Grateful for the experience, Bella had time to reflect on who some of her creative

influences are.

“My parents are super-creative,” she said. “They have always supported me to follow that kind of path, and I did… Mum and Dad both went to art school, so they’ve always kind of encouraged me to draw and paint, and do all those kinds of creative things just as a kid.”

From here, Bella hopes to continue her study, while also branching into expanding her label.

Local beekeepers launch initiative to tackle varroa mite menace

Local beekeepers Julia Hutabarat and Shelby Ashelford are looking to launch a new group, bringing beekeepers of all types together so they might share information and learn from each other as they face the threat posed by the invasive varroa mite.

Both advocates of natural beekeeping, Julia and Shelby came together to create this group as they believed “there needed to be more open conversations and information sharing which catered to

the diversity of beekeepers especially in relation to the varroa mite situation”.

At an event on May 19, they are inviting all local beekeepers to join them for the launch of a new group called ‘Bee Natural Beekeepers (BnB) – Varroa Warriors’.

“The idea behind the group is to make sure that we include everyone in the conversation because to date, sadly, not everyone has been brought together to actually have a conversation,” said Shelby.

“We’re going to be very transparent and inclusive and we’ve invited people from all different areas of beekeeping whether they be queen bee breeders, commercial beekeepers, backyard recreational beekeepers… We’ve talked to government departments and also scientists in the ‘bee space’ as well.”

Shelby said the BnB Varroa Warriors will focus on natural, organic, and biodynamic management practices, but will also be learning about the different chemicals and non-chemical treatment options.

“The concept behind [the group] is to explore natural beekeeping, although with Varroa we do know that chemicals may be required at some point to save our

hives,” she said

“So we will be investigating synthetic and organic chemicals as well, so that we are fully informed but the concept is that we try to prevent the Varroa mite getting into our hives in the first place.”

Julia Hutabarat the Varroa mite is something that will impact all beekeepers, which is why they want to bring everybody together.

“Beekeepers across Australia will be facing the same uncertainties with Varroa mites, and we hope to start a conversation where everyone has a voice,“ Julia said.

BnB Varroa Warriors will not just be limited to Varroa Mite discussions, she said, but will be a supportive environment to help beekeepers and will investigate any bee pest or disease.

The free launch event will be held on Sunday, May 19. Anyone interested in attending can contact Julia on 0434900226, Shelby on 0401473010, or email BnBVarroaWarriors@gmail.com

THE GOOD ENOUGH Parent

Rehab

I’m in a rehab program. No, not for the scotch. It’s not one of those fun rehabs packed with c-list celebrities from The Bachelor you end up in after a week-long bender. It’s a pulmonary rehabilitation program and, most surprisingly, I bloody love it.

Parts are hard: I recently used a treadmill for the first time in a decade, and the physio “helping” me seems to be a sadistic bully who didn’t get hugged enough by his parents. (Like, we all have childhood trauma Damien, but most of us don’t work through it by telling heartbreaking lies about how many reps are left.) I’ve cried twice, and I’m not even remotely ashamed to admit this. A recent lung scan showed extensive, irreversible damage due to the blood clots and I’m working hard to do the best with what lung function I’ve got left. So I exercise every day, drink water instead of coffee, and go to bed early. I’ve basically become everything I despise, but I feel incredible. Luckily I have the kids to keep me in check, otherwise I might become a bit of a wanker about the whole experience. This is of course my fault, because one of my health goals is to increase my breath capacity so I can sing louder on the drive to school. Miss 15 points out that the car ride with me in the morning is already an unbearable hostage situation. Miss Nine points out that my Adele sounds like a YouTube video she watched in school of a goat screaming. I point out that any ungrateful children are welcome to simply walk to school. Unfortunately, I say this not on the way to school, but on the way to a medical appointment, so they have plenty of opportunity for revenge.

My cardiologist asks about protein in my diet and I announce that I enjoy protein bars. Hubby looks confused and says, “I didn’t know we had any protein bars”. This is when my 15-yearold narc lets everyone know that I’ve actually been eating the Snickers bars he keeps for golf. “They’re full of nuts,” I say quietly to a disappointed medical professional and a 45-yearold smirking golf enthusiast. I make hubby and kids join me for my afternoon walk as punishment.

But the hardest part of being a healthy person and committing to Damien’s torture is finding the time. And, yes, my health is my top priority, but my bank’s top priority is that I pay my mortgage and I’m required by law to feed and clothe my children. So, like all mothers, my life is an exhausting juggle right now. I don’t actually know if there’s a maximum number of nights per week I’m allowed to feed my kids toasted sandwiches for dinner before I need to report myself to the authorities, but I feel I’m dangerously close if there is. I’d just like to assure everyone reading this that they occasionally have a thin slice of tomato on there, which I reckon counts as a win. However, the lack of time comes to a head on Wednesday morning when Miss Nine says she’s nervous about giving a speech at school and asks if I’ll come to watch her. It breaks my heart to say no, but I’m off to get yelled to as I cry on a treadmill, and this beautiful girl of mine tells me it’s OK. When I pick her up in the afternoon I ask about her speech, tell her I’m so proud of her for doing it, and apologise again for missing it. “That’s OK, Mum, I did a great job and told everyone that you couldn’t make it because you go to rehab on Wednesdays.” Fantastic!

LEARN FROM INDUSTRY LEADERS AT CADIA –2025 APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM OPENS

Applications for the Newmont Cadia (Cadia) 2025 Apprenticeship Program are now open. The program enables apprentices to kick-start their mining career at Cadia, learning from industry leaders about worldclass mining techniques and methods, including the development of Australia’s largest block cave.

Cadia’s General Manager, Tom Lukeman, is encouraging tradespeople wanting to begin an exciting career in mining to apply.

“Cadia is the perfect training ground for those wanting to learn from industry leaders and embark on a diverse career in mining,” Mr. Lukeman said.

“Our Apprenticeship Program provides the skills and experience to develop high-quality tradespeople who are across the latest cutting-edge technologies and best practices in mining operations.”

Cadia’s Apprenticeship Program has been running for over a decade, with more than 137 apprentices successfully completing their trades at Cadia. In 2025, Cadia will offer apprenticeships in the following trades: Auto Electrical, Boilermaking, Electrical, Fitter Machinist, Heavy and Light Vehicle, Technology and Innovation.

Apprentice Auto Electrician, Max Hunter, said he has been fortunate to work with some of the most knowledgeable tradespeople in the industry.

“Every day I am learning something new, whether that is working on a 793 haul truck or a land cruiser, the wealth of knowledge and experience my team has shared with me is second to none,” said Mr. Hunter.

Apprentices at Cadia are given the opportunity to experience both underground and surface environments, working on a diverse range of machinery.

Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, Annalise Brouwer, who is a finalist for the 2024 Western NSW Apprentice of the Year, said the program has helped build her confidence servicing and maintaining vehicles.

“As you get further along in your apprenticeship, you will gain a lot of independence and confidence to complete tasks autonomously,” Ms Brouwer said, “I have learnt how to work in a team of people from all different ages and backgrounds who are always willing to share their tips and tricks of the trade.”

Both Junior (16-20) and Adult (>21) candidates are eligible to apply.

Applications are open and will close at 23:59 on Sunday, 26 May 2024. For more information, scan the QR code.

Last week the Parliamentary Inquiry into insurers’ responses to 2022 major floods claims visited our region.

In November 2022, the communities of Eugowra, Molong, Manildra, Canowindra, Cudal, Wellington, and many places in between were devastated by storms and floods.

WHY WAS AN INQUIRY WAS NEEDED?

In the aftermath of the tragedy, disaster-hit communities were left reeling by callous insurance companies, which forced struggling policyholders to jump through hoop after hoop — only to knock back claim after claim.

That’s why I fiercely advocated for the establishment of the probe, and asked the Prime Minister in Question Time in May 2023 for his support to get an inquiry up and running.

The inquiry was announced by me and the Assistant Treasurer at the wrecked home of Brian and Lesley Smith in Eugowra last year. It then kicked off in late January, and at each public hearing I have pushed insurance companies to not only acknowledge the cruel and callous way they handled claims, but to apologise for their gross mistreatment of their loyal policyholders — who were just trying to pick up the pieces of their lives and move forward.

Out the front of the Preschool proudly stands a flagpole, but recently the flags were looking a little tired. So, I brought along brand new Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and together, we held a flag raising!

Recently, the children have been learning about the symbolism of the 3 flags, so it was great to get everyone involved as we tied the new flags to the pole. This year, Trinity Preschool is celebrating 100 years of operation! Established in 1924 in the Bluestone Hall, the preschool relocated to Kooronga Avenue in 1976. Thank you for having me, Trinity Preschool!

Brave residents, organisations and business owners spoke up about the cold-hearted and shocking way insurers treated them in the days, weeks and months following the disaster.

BRIAN AND LESLEY SMITH’S STORY

Local residents of Eugowra, Brian and Lesley Smith, spoke passionately about how, despite having flood insurance, they were put through the wringer by their insurer. The couple were initially offered a very low-ball cash settlement — less than half of what was in their policy. On top of that, the insurance company refused to cover damage to the support piers under the house (which had shifted because of the force of the water and being smashed up by a floating log) due to the age of the building, and wouldn’t pay out for damage to the roof sustained when a helicopter (which saved their lives) hovered above the house to rescue them and their dogs. As the months went by, the Smith’s, despite being heartbroken and traumatised from the disaster, determinedly fought for what was owed to them. They obtained a thorough and independent building report which proved that the insurers didn’t have a leg to stand on. That report, coupled with intense pressure from the media, and representation from my office, meant that they received what they were due — 12 long months after the disaster.

HEBA ELKURDI’S STORY

PHIL AND ANN-MAREE DAVIS’ STORY

Another story voiced during the hearings was the case of Molong local Heba Elkurdi, who owns and runs Downtown Fitness in Molong. After the disaster, it took her insurers a whole month to get a hydrologist to visit the premises. After the assessment, it took a further three months for a 1.5 page report to be produced. During this four-month delay, Ms Elkurdi’s business was closed, but she still had to meet financial commitments on the extensive gym equipment — which had all been destroyed.

This had a huge impact on her. For four months after the storms and floods hit, she couldn’t move on. Next came weeks of toing and froing with the loss adjuster over reasonably minor items on the inventory list which Ms Elkurdi prepared — even though they ended up being paid in full.

There were issues like asking Ms Elkurdi to confirm that the computer hard drive and the hard drive podium was on the floor and not on the desk. In the middle of this, the loss adjuster downed tools and go and work on a job in New Zealand.

Ms Elkurdi’s story shows how devastating it is for customers to not only survive a traumatic event, but then battle their insurers to simply be listened to and have their claim dealt with in a timely way.

Phil and Ann-maree Davis of Molong had their home destroyed and were then put under disgraceful pressure by the insurance company to accept a low-ball offer over $200,000 less than the claim was actually worth. This reprehensible carry-on went on for a year. It was only after we launched this inquiry and we called the insurer out on Facebook that Phil and Ann-maree got justice. They’re still living in a pod but their house will now be properly re-built.

I’M HOPEFUL FOR LASTING INDUSTRY CHANGE

Having the inquiry travel to our region has provided local communities with a real chance to shine a spotlight on their experiences following the storms and floods.

Thank you to everyone who presented at the hearing, participated in the community panels, gave a community statement, or who showed their support by listening to their fellow community members.

With the inquiry now wrapped up, I’m hopeful that it will be a real turning point in the way that insurers deal with disaster-hit policy holders, that positive change can occur from the suffering and heartache that our residents have had to endure, and that lasting change can be brought to this industry.

The submissions portal and the online survey remain open to share insurance experiences following the November 2022 storms and floods. To complete the survey, head to: www.aph. gov.au/floodinsurance

This month the senate inquiry into supermarket prices handed down its report – once again laying bare the hypocrisy of the major parties. The report recommended breaking up the power of the supermarket giants (divestiture).

You can’t make it up! This is the very thing that Bob Katter and I put to the vote in Parliament in our Reducing Supermarket Dominance Bill. None of the major parties supported it.

In their dissenting reports to the main Senate report, the Labor Party said it would not support divestiture powers.

The Coalition, in their dissenting report said it’s now not so sure about divestiture despite the leader of the Nationals previously saying they would support a Greens

divestiture Bill. The Nationals are now saying they won’t support this legislation. What a backflip!

What does it all mean? It’s just all words! Smoke and mirrors! The major parties talk about cracking down on supermarket giants and divestiture because the focus groups tell them it’s a hot topic but when they get the chance to back their words up with a vote in Parliament, they pike it. This report shows them crab walking away from meaningful action on winding back supermarket power.

Just like the rude and nasty insults yelled at Bob Katter and I by the National Party when we held a press conference to talk about our legislation tackling the supermarket giants, this Senate report is just hot air. My prediction is that it will go nowhere and not lead to any real change. And the price gouging of farmers and consumers by supermarket giants will continue.

No wonder people are cynical about politics and the major parties.

WALLAROOS SELECTION FOR CENTRAL WEST DUO TABUA & ARABELLA

Congratulations to Orange's Tabua Tuinakauvadra and Bathurst’s Arabella McKenzie on being selected in the Australian Wallaroos squad.

The squad played Canada in Sydney last Saturday night as part of the Pacific Four Series. While the Wallaroos showed a lot of heart, Canada proved to be too good on the night. The Wallaroos will definitely take away plenty of positives from the game and come back stronger.

Tabua went to Orange High School and played for the Orange Emus. She has played four games for Australia.

Born in Bathurst, Arabella played Fly-Half in her 22nd cap for Australia.

I was at the game Saturday night and Tabua, Arabella and the whole squad did us proud. The Wallaroos next match in the series is this Friday night against the USA. Go the Wallaroos!

ART REVIEW

Make Believe

Victor Gordon’s thoughtprovoking exhibition, ‘Make Believe (Once upon a Time in Waspasia)’ at Orange Regional Gallery poses uneasy questions about the concept of a ‘lucky country’. Through his work, the Orange-based artist delves into a wide range of social issues in Australia and internationally.

Born in South Africa, Gordon draws inspiration from personal experiences and the social and political undercurrents from

the past and present. As a socially engaged artist he opposes nationalism with a focus on social justice.

For Gordon, art can be used to alter, expand and improve people’s perception of the world around them. The function of art for him is to mirror the world and act as society’s conscience to provoke a muchneeded re-evaluation. His painting, ‘Site of Sorrow’ (2023), for example, interrupts a typical ‘landscape’ painting with a powerful reminder of the violence and sorrow that are erased in the telling of history.

The exhibition is striking a chord with visitors, some of whom have left comments in our visitor surveys. “It is already very impressive and most enjoyable, and found Victor Gordon’s works a thought provoking experience” (01/05/2024) and “I really enjoyed the small spaces and found the exhibitions, particularly the Victor Gordon exhibit, particularly well-curated, set out and very thought provoking. I really enjoyed it” (14/04/2024).

The exhibition is accompanied by an

excellent documentary created by local producer Vince Lovecchio, offering insights into the artist’s intentions and experiences behind the works that give them their sardonic brilliance.

See this exhibition at Orange Regional Gallery daily between 10am and 4pm until 9 June.

Orange Regional Gallery is a facility of Orange City Council. Entry is always FREE. For details visit www.orange.nsw.gov.au/ gallery

Healthy Life!

Warm up this winter with Pickleball

Anew sport to play as well as the chance to relax near a cosy fire, that’s what Orange Indoor Tennis Centre can offer the public this winter. We all know how important physical activity is for our health and wellbeing but as the cooler weather sets in, it can be that little bit harder to get motivated.

That’s where pickleball comes in! “What is pickleball?” I hear you ask.

Pickleball is a paddle and ball sport played on a hard court with a net and up to four players.

Think tennis, badminton and ping pong wrapped up in one neat little package.

It’s fun for all ages and you don’t need to

have any previous experience to join in.

The Orange Indoor Tennis Centre runs pickleball every Thursday night and the best part is it is all indoors (no icy winds or rain here!)

Orange Indoor Tennis Centre also has a cosy fire in its lounge area.

They provide all the equipment you need. The friendly staff are also on hand to help you learn the game. Bring your friends along for a night of fitness and fun.

Orange Indoor Tennis Centre hosts pickleball on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm at its Palmer St location (behind the Orange Function Centre).

Cost is $10 per person (your first visit is free). To get involved call the Orange Indoor Tennis Centre on 6362 9811.

Pickleball set to take o in Orange

The colour city has a new sport that is about to surge and the Orange PCYC on Friday, May 17 is one place to learn all about it.

Pickleball is Australia’s newest sports craze and Orange PCYC is hosting a seven-week Friday-night competition starting on Friday, May 24 at the PCYC.

Players must register by 8pm tomorrow (Friday, May 17) and the perfect way to do so is by attending the PCYC’s information and rules evening that night from 6pm.

Pickleball is more accessible for seniors and the combination of “ping pong, badminton and tennis” played on a smaller court is “going nuts”

across the country.

To learn more, people can attend on the night and even see visual demonstrations.

Orange PCYC Club Manager Jaime Wenban is certainly excited to be putting on the new competition.

“It’s all very new to us here … a new sport that we are looking forward to running,” Ms Wenban.

“It’s a really good little sport that we can’t wait to run.”

The seven-week pickleball competition costs $70.00, while people can also try social pickleball on Wednesday mornings (9.30am to 11.30am) and Friday

afternoons (4pm to 6pm) for $8 a session. Offering pickleball is just part of PCYC’s mission to keep young people (and those young at heart) active.

Ms Wenban said it is important to keep active.

“Enjoying something that you do in life, be it going to the gym, taking the dog for a walk or playing a sport … just keeping moving,” she said.

With an enthusiastic staff of 14 (including casuals for school holiday programs), the PCYC offers a multitude of programs.

On Wednesday mornings, Orange PCYC provides a program called Fit for Life, which provides

young people a chance to play a sport and have breakfast before getting a lift to school.

A new boxing space is currently being set up, including a boxing ring. PCYC Orange will be starting a competitive boxing program in the coming months.

Various gym and group fitness classes are all available in the direct debit membership which is $22 a fortnight. PCYC Orange has been supporting the community since 1994.

For more information on Orange PCYC, or to find out about pickleball, please call 6360 2249.

International singer of popular music and folk songs, Peter Byrne, is one of Australia’s most talented and versatile entertainers. This June, Peter is bringing his award-winning tribute act, celebrating the career of the legendary Neil Diamond, to the Orange Civic Theatre.

Peter began his music career singing in pubs in his home city of Dublin. Looking for something more, he ventured out to Australia in 1988 where he would perform at weddings, parties and pubs around Sydney.

“And then, one night, somebody asked me to sing a few Neil Diamond songs, which I did,” recalls Peter, his Irish accent still very evident even after nearly four decades in Australia.

“And somebody came up and said, ‘You know, you sound like him, you should do something more’. I kind of ignored it at first and then the years went by and more and more people just wanted to hear me sing Neil Diamond songs.”

In 1992, Peter put together his first Neil Diamond show, performing it at the Wenty Leagues Club in Sydney.

“That’s 32 years now,” says Peter, who has been touring

Peter Byrne is no rough Diamond

tribute shows to Neil Diamonds ever since.

“I guess it would never have happened If somebody hadn’t said to me, ‘You sound like Neil Diamond’, because I definitely don’t talk like him and I definitely don’t look like him!”

But it’s Peter’s uncanny ability to recreate Neil Diamond’s distinct and powerful vocals that has won him fans all over Australia and even impressed Diamond’s pianist Tom Hensley, who gave Peter a resounding nod of approval after seeing his Diamond tribute.

Peter’s performance received peer recognition when he won a prestigious Australian Entertainment Mo Award, which even got him a congratulatory message from Diamond himself.

“All of a sudden, about two months later in the mail, arrived this lovely signed picture from Neil and saying, ‘Thank you so much. Congratulations. Thanks for the great tribute show!’,” Peter says.

Forever Diamond, says Peter, is a 50-year celebration of music; 31 songs over two-and-a-half hours covering all the hits from Diamond’s vast repertoire.

“I think he’s released 51 albums. So that’s a lot of material!” says Peter. “So I’ve picked what I reckon

people would love. What his fans want to hear. So we do all the iconic albums, obviously Hot August Night, we do a salute to The Jazz Singer, the Beautiful Noise album, we do his duets.

“It’s also a very informative show. I tell people where the songs came from, the years they were written, and I guess my Irish charm on stage shines over too as I tell funny stories and I very much get the audience involved,” continues Peter.

From the very beginning, Peter says he did not want his show to be just someone pretending to be Neil Diamond, but rather himself, as an artist, celebrating il Diamond’s life and his music.

“I’ve got a terrific band on stage as well. They’ve been with me for about 10 years and the sound that they can create as a five-piece band along with my vocal ability takes people on that magical journey,” he says.

“They’ll be able to close their eyes and they’ll hear the voice of Neil Diamond!”

Experience Forever Diamond - A celebration of Neil Diamond at the Orange Ex-Services Club on Saturday, June 1. Doors and bar open at 7.30pm, show begins at 8pm. Scan the QR Code for tickets or search “Forever Diamond” on www.123tix.com.au

ORANGE EAGLES UNDER-12S GO THROUGH WJL BASKETBALL SEASON UNDEFEATED

Orange Eagles under-12s coach Mitch Brakenridge knows enough about sport to know it has its sad stories from time to time, so he was delighted this junior basketball tale had a deserved happy ending.

The Orange Eagles’ Black Division One under-12s squad went through Basketball NSW’s Western Junior League (WJL) undefeated to qualify for the State Cup in August.

It was a remarkable achievement, with the side winning 14 straight games, scoring 840 points and conceding just 400 along the way.

Orange plays against teams from across the Central West, Blue Mountains and Riverina in the league.

Three preliminary rounds were held, one in Narrandera (February 10 and 11), Lithgow (March 9 and 10) and Orange (April 6 and 7).

Orange played four matches at each, winning all 12 contests by convincing margins. That meant Orange Eagles’ top squad qualified in first place for the top-four finals series at Griffith on May 4 and 5.

At Griffith, the Orange Eagles were able to defeat Bathurst 59-42 to directly qualify for the grand final. They faced the Goldminers again in the decider and won 64-42 to take out the crown.

In 2023, Orange under-14s team won a WJL division one title, defeating Leeton 50-47 in the final.

A year on, and the Eagles have another top-tier success, this time via the under-12s.

Mitch said his side started to understand their capabilities which meant ahead of the round three and the finals series winning became a clear goal.

“There was a fair bit of feeling the job wasn’t done,” he said.

“At the end of the grand final the boys were excited… you could tell they were saving all their celebrations for that game.

Sport doesn’t always give you what you deserve, but it was nice in this instance that they got what they deserved. It’s special to win WJL, but even more so to go undefeated.”

Mitch pointed to the group being hard trainers as one reason for success.

The guidance of co-coach Paul Ringland, a noted rugby union coach at Emus and exercise physiologist, ensured the Orange Eagles under-12s division one side were one of the fittest teams in the competition.

“Getting Paul’s input and making sure those boys were really, really fit I think is what helped us,” he said.

“Having Paul to be able to be relied upon to know how far we could push the boys was a secret in our success. We had a little team motto that no-one was going to work harder than us.”

Brakenridge said one of the most satisfying aspects was seeing how well this team came together as a group. He was also happy with how they responded once they understood they were a good side.

“The boys were over the moon,” he said.

“Round one we go undefeated, round two we go undefeated, we’re starting to think we’ve got something pretty special.

“Knowing that these boys will have the memory of this team for the rest of their lives is pretty cool. The boys did all the work and all the training.”

The hard work started last September at selections.

The squad plays together in local Orange competitions as well as Mondays as well as turning out for their respective club sides. They also train on Thursdays.

That program continues because as WJL division one winners Orange Eagles will play at the State Cup in August.

“It ramps up a gear,” coach Brakenridge said.

“It’s where you play the best of the best from the entire state. The metro teams are typically pretty awesome.

“It’s good for our guys in the county to play against that level of competition. But given we’ve had a good season, we’re confident we can take it to them this year.”

As a club, Orange Eagles made five grand finals across the WJL.

The Eagles generally field two sides (if possible) in any age group where, Eagles Black (A-grade, division one) and Eagles White (development side, division two).

This year, Orange’s under-12 girls won the WJL division two title, defeating Narrandera 57-37 at Griffith.

Other Orange sides that made grand finals in 2024 to finish runners-up include under-12s, under -14s and under-18s Eagles White division two sides.

Division two winners do not progress onto the State Cup finals.

Mitch said the expectations are high across the Eagles for 2025.

“We’re looking to push it further as a club,” he said.

The Orange Eagles under-12s division one boys squad included Archer Mendl, Artie Keegan, Dylan Brakenridge, Felix Fleming, George Millner, Lachlan Bailey, Noah Brakenridge and Toby Dover, with Aleisha Peschka the team manager alongside coaches Brakenridge and Ringland.

Finals the goal for Waratahs after mixed start to 2024

Before Saturday’s 5-3 Western Premier League loss against Dubbo Bulls FC in Orange, Waratahs FC coach Justin Splithof said the clash would be a great gauge of where his side is at.

Waratahs had started 2024 with two wins and two losses going into the May 11 fixture.

Netting three goals in an eight-goal shoot-out demonstrates that Waratahs FC have the fire power to threaten the best sides in soccer’s WPL.

In previous fixtures this year before Saturday’s two-goal loss, Waratahs FC had lost 1-nil to defending premiers Bathurst ’75 and 2-1 to Macquarie United but also had strong wins against Parkes Cobras 6-1 and Panorama FC 3-1.

Tahs finished seventh last year in Splithof’s first year in charge and he is determined to do better in 2024.

Qualifying for the finals is the base target.

September is a time of the year Waratahs are used to playing, with last Saturday’s two opponents having won nine WPL titles between them.

Bathurst ’75 has won the most premierships (seven), but Waratahs (five) and Bulls (four) are not far behind.

The fact Waratahs have netted 14 goals this season in five appearances means the talent is there.

“The main aim is to be playing finals at a bare minimum,” Splithof said last week.

“Let’s get into finals because Waratahs don’t miss too many finals.

“Let’s get back to where we belong and then see if we can shake things up once we get there.

“On our day, we can match it with and beat any other side in the competition.”

And while the decision of last year’s grand finalists and fellow Orange side Barnstoneworth United FC not to play at WPL level in 2024 ensured the competition’s 2023 joint golden boot winner Carlos Castrillon ended up at Waratahs, Splithof said he’d much prefer two sides from the colour city competing for this year’s WPL crown.

“I’m more disappointed we don’t have another Orange team in the comp,” he said. “I’d rather more teams coming into the comp than teams leaving.”

TWO organisations in Orange are taking on the challenge of running pickleball competitions.

Pickleball is Australia’s newest sports craze and both Orange Indoor Tennis Centre (Thursday nights) and Orange PCYC (Friday nights) are running programs.

So, what exactly is pickleball?

“Pickleball is a paddle and ball sport with a perfect balance of court dimensions, rules and equipment to afford all skill levels and age groups, enjoyment and success on the court,”

Pickleball Australia’s website states, with some of the prose put together from Mike Hess’ article

The Perfect Balance.

“The game … is both fun and challenging with a combination of long rallies and a blend of soft and rapid-fire shots.

“The best athlete must earn their points not purely by athleticism, power and speed, but also through the use of positioning, patience, tactics and touch.”

Orange City Life is reliably informed that Pickleball is great fun for all ages and is a combination of “table tennis, badminton and tennis”.

Check out the Healthy Life feature in this edition of the OCL to learn how you can play this new sport.

ORANGE CYMS had a dream away trip to Nyngan in rugby league’s Peter McDonald Premiership (PMP), racking up four wins for a combined forand-against of *196-6 against the Tigers.

The big trek west is never an easy one which makes CYMS’ performances all-the-more impressive.

For the record, CYMS won 46-6 in first grade, *44-nil in reserve grade, 46-nil in under-18s and 60-nil in blues tag. When faced with a 300km one-way trip to Larkin Oval that’s a mighty effort.

The tally may have been 198-6 with a *46-nil win in reserve grade.

Official scores on-line had the reserve grade clash at *44-nil.

Whether it was 196-6 or 198-6, it’s a mammoth one-sided tally.

With the match between Bathurst St Pat’s and Wellington postponed, it means CYMS (+70) tops the first grade PMP table on points difference from Bathurst Panthers (+14). Orange CYMS’ blues tag (+118) is also on top from Dubbo Macquarie (+70).

Meanwhile, Orange Hawks toiled hard but went down 24-10 in first grade to defending champions Dubbo CYMS at Orange’s Wade Park on Sunday. In blues tag, Hawks won 12-nil. Orange United were not in action due to the Woodbridge Cup rep-round general bye. George Tooke Shield won both the first grade (18-10) and blues tag (42-18) representative fixtures against Woodbridge Cup at Cowra.

Orange’s Taj Jordan was also named in the NSW Country under-16s side to play NSW City at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, May 18.

Jordan, now at Orange CYMS after formerly playing with Bloomfield, starred for Western Rams in the Andrew Johns Cup at fullback. Fellow Rams Logan Coombes, Triston Ross and Kemp Riches also made the NSW Country 16s’ side.

Former Orange CYMS first grade fullback Lachlan Munro, now at the Albury Thunder in Group Nine, made the NSW Country men’s open age side that also plays NSW City at the NRL ground commonly known as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’.

EMUS and Orange City both have two wins and two losses from the first four rounds of rugby union’s Blowes Cup first grade competition. Both Orange clubs face-off this Saturday (18 May) in the derby at Endeavour Oval and given both teams have played every other side in the competition and have 50 per cent win ratios it could be anyone’s game.

Emus lost 27-14 to Forbes at Forbes on Saturday (11 May) while Orange City went down 29-7 to Bathurst Bulldogs at Bathurst. Bathurst Bulldogs (20 points) stand alone with four straight wins while Cowra (three points) have not won a game.

Outside of that, Forbes (second, 12 points), Dubbo (third, 11), Emus (fourth, 10 points) and City (fifth, nine) all have 2-2 win-loss records. Interestingly, Orange Emus and Orange City Lions have also similar records in women’s Westfund Ferguson Cup action. Emus lost 14-5 to Forbes, while City went down 26-5 to Bathurst. Both are 1-3 after four rounds, with the Lions (fourth, six points) ahead of Emus (fifth, four points) due to bonus points.

ORANGE Tigers had a bye in Central West AFL men’s tier one and the women went so close against Bathurst Giants.

The Tigers’ women went down 2.8 (20) to 1.5 (11) at Waratahs on Saturday, May 11.

There was better news for Tigers’ men’s tier two side, who had a big 11.10 (76) to 1.4 (10) win against the Giants.

CYMS had a huge 5-nil win in the Orange derby in women’s Central West Premier League Hockey at Bob Davis Field on Saturday (May 11).

They now top the standings after two rounds with two wins and a plus-seven goal difference. Orange United have dropped both matches to sit in sixth place.

The men’s competition started on Saturday with the new format being introduced.

All four games were played at Lithgow Hockey Centre.

Orange outfit Wanderers had only one match and went down 2-1 to Lithgow Storm.

Interestingly, Dubbo Lions came away from Lithgow with two wins, beating Parkes United (2-1) and Bathurst United (2-nil).

National Simultaneous Storytime — Wednesday, May 22

The Australian Library and Information Association invites you to join in the fun of this year's National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) at Central West Libraries on Wednesday, May 22 at 12 noon.

This year, everyone will be reading Bowerbird Blues by Australian author and illustrator Aura Parker — on the same day, at the same time across Australia!

Bowerbird Blues stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for (you guessed it) blue! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.

When learning her book was selected as this year’s NSS story, author Aura Parker said: “National Simultaneous Storytime brings us

To the Editor,

together and makes us smile, and the shared experience can send imaginations soaring to new heights. I am surprised and blown away with excitement that Bowerbird Blues has been chosen as the book for 2024!”

In 2023, NSS saw over 2 million children reading on the day. For 2024, they’ve adjusted the time slightly with the goal of further supporting librarians, teachers, parents, and caregivers to get millions of kids in Australia, New Zealand, and around the world reading together.

Join in at Cowra, Forbes, Manildra, Molong and Orange City Libraries for this incredible Australiawide event on Wednesday, May 22 at 12 noon. All welcome!

I’d like to give two big ticks of approval for the best of Orange. Last Tuesday, after picking up hearing aids, I found the front tyre of my car was flat. I was having trouble changing this in Lords Place when a young fellow came across and o ered to help me — this was a godsend for an 86-year-old! He got me going and would take nothing but my grateful thanks. Then Brock and his team at Bridgestone Tyres went to a special e ort to see my vehicle was ship-shape in the quickest time possible. These two things prove once again that there are special people in Orange who take service as a top aim.

Look for the beauty in your own backyard!

“Look for the beauty in your own backyard!” says Huntley resident Alexandra Rezko, who dropped in this photo she has taken of the new light installation recently unveiled in the laneway connecting Summer Street with the Orange Central Square shopping centre car park. Alexandra, a retired school teacher, says there is so much beauty to see in our natural and human-built environments if we just take the time to look for it. Her photo, titled “Walkway”, won the Open Colour Print section at the recent Orange Show.

SIN LUZ (LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS) WITH

STEFANIE OVERHALL

As I write this our street has been without power for 18 hours. When the power went out, all of our appliances shut down, but the main thing we noticed was that we were plunged into darkness. In Chile we say we are sin luz, literally without light.

Darkness is good when we want to sleep, but causes fear and confusion at other times. In the dark you can’t see where you’re going or find things. When out at night we seek the light because darkness provides cover for bad behaviour.

All this got me thinking about what Jesus said in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Speaking metaphorically, each of us has a dark side; hidden thoughts and actions that we don’t want to broadcast. I am so thankful that Jesus has brought light to the darkest corners of my life. He has illuminated my sin, not to shame, but to forgive. If you have ever walked in darkness mentally, morally or spiritually, why not look to Jesus? His light is sufficient to guide us safely now and into eternal life.

THUMBS UP and congratulations to Mrs Lola Wyatt upon receiving an award for her years of faithful service with the Blayney Hospital Auxiliary. We wish her many more happy years.

THUMBS UP Huge congratulations to Ray and Julie Spurr, new owners of Telegraph Hotel in Molong for their wonderful service on Mother’s Day. We could see why they were fully booked for lunch. Everything went very smoothly, staff were attentive, friendly and happy to go the extra mile to ensure the experience was brilliant all around. Food was of a very high standard and delivered in a very timely fashion. Well done Julie, Ray and the team for a wonderful lunch service on quite a busy day.

THUMBS UP to Chris at Petbarn for always being so friendly and helpful and going out of his way to ensure customers are treated well.

THUMBS DOWN I went to buy a can of Aussie apricots to support local farmers and was unhappy to see they were made in China and South Africa for a greatly reduced price! How does that work out?

THUMBS UP to Orange City Council for removing all obstructing tree branches and vegetation impacting safety on Ploughmans Lane near the Canobolas Road intersection.

THUMBS DOWN to the people who continue to hoon in the early hours of the morning when people have to work very early. Be considerate of others!

THUMBS UP to all the organisers of the lovely high tea on Mother’s Day at the Hotel Canobolas. Huntington’s Australia is such a worthy and deserving charity. Thanks to the hotel staff also.

THUMBS UP to the Fire Department. Two firemen have just been to my house to change the batteries in my smoke detectors. They also changed two detectors that were very old models. This is a free service for the elderly and I am very grateful for it.

THUMBS DOWN to the person who went through the magazines at Coles and removed the competition tokens. Hope you don’t win anything!

THUMBS DOWN to the taxi driver speeding down Gardiner Road that almost ran into my son and I crossing the road, then beeped the horn as if it was my fault!

THUMBS UP to the person who stopped and picked up our puppy, who had got out, and taken him to the vet on William Street.

THUMBS UP to the beautiful kind lady who dropped off 22 gifts to an aged care home to give to our mothers on Mother’s Day. If there was more kindness in the world like you showed, the world would be a better place! All the nursing home staff and our residents thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

THUMBS UP to Babbette at the Blayney Train Station. My Mum had to travel to Sydney for medical reasons and was unsure as to how she could do this. Babbette explained everything clearly to her, making sure she understood everything. She advised the best option for Mum, where she needed to change trains and even what platform she needed to be on. The care and compassion she showed was amazing. She even called Mum after she came home just to check up and see how she was doing. What an absolutely lovely lady! Thank you again for looking out for my Mum.

THUMBS DOWN to the white 4WD on May 9 for not letting me merge into the lane on Byng Street. I didn’t use that lane to get past everyone. How about sharing the road with other road users and letting people merge and stop being an arrogant 4WD driver. You might be bigger but you don’t own the road!

THUMBS UP to Luke B from EcoScape Solutions for hydro-seeding my front paddock. He took great care while manoeuvring his machinery. Looking forward to seeing the little sprouts this coming springtime.

THUMBS UP to the girls at Greengate Sandwich Bar. Lovely smiles on their faces. Delicious food and excellent service keep up the good work girls.

THUMBS UP to the Orange City Council wetlands team who do such a terrific job keeping the Ploughmans Wetlands mown and looking great.

THUMBS UP to the wonderful team at BreastScreen Orange. You were all so understanding regarding my concerns during a recent breast scan. Your kindness made all the difference. Thank you.

THUMBS UP to the delightful “The Good Enough Parent” column in the May 2-8 issue. It made me giggle, reminisce and overall made my day. It’s clever and delightful!

THUMBS DOWN to Orange City Council for not erecting a decent-sized sign to Benjamin Short Grove aged care home. A small blue sign was placed right opposite the right turn into the home. This is just asking for trouble when families are looking for the address either way from Forest Road or Huntley Road. Please put the sign 50 metres back or near the big set of lights on Forest Road. No accidents then.
