This is my 1982 VH Holden Commodore 'Papaya’ model. I’ve had it for a little bit over a year now.

I had a few options, but I chose this one because of the rarity of it. They didn't make many of the ‘Papaya’ models, only about 120. It is certainly not the most expensive Commodore, it doesn't have the name of the Group A’s, but in terms of the numbers produced it was a very limited run.

What do I like about it? I like the fact it has an aerial that goes in and out; you don't see that these days, it is just old school. I like the sound of the 253 engine, the V8, and when you close the door, it’s solid and it reminds me of growing up.

I remember getting in the old HQ day-in, day-out as a kid.

My young fella, who’s 16, loves these old school cars, which I think is unreal. I talked to him about getting air conditioning put in it and he said, ‘don't do it, Dad!’ And he was right!

He's got his head switched on!

My understanding is that this has been resprayed, but it is the original colour. It's got a few things I want to tidy up on it and really get it back to stock standard.

I’d been thinking about buying one for a long time, probably since 2002, but life… I won’t say life gets in the way, but life happens. You don't tend to make time for things that you want for yourself. You make sacrifices for your family and it gets to that point in time where you just say, ‘I got to hurry up and do something!’

And my wife supported me to be honest, she said, ‘Nick, just go and do it. Don't talk about it, just go and do it.’

I’d love a VL Calais, but it's just too hard to find one. And I'd have to sell my house or every kidney that lives in my house to afford one! It would be nice, but I'm happy with this.

HISTORYTALKING

For the past few weeks, I have had an experience which has increased my admiration for the most caring profession of all - nursing. I have spent some time in hospital and have been looked after by dedicated attendants. It has inspired me to look at the history of nursing and those who have worked and are still working in that profession.

Of course, whenever we think of nurses, we think of Florence Nightingale who was born in Florence, Italy in 1870 to wealthy English parents. She was known as “the lady with the lamp” when she looked after wounded soldiers in the Crimean War and walked around their beds by the light of the lamp she held.

In 1860, she established the first scientifically-based nursing school at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital and set up training courses for nurses and midwives in workhouse infirmaries.

In the Colonies at that time, the standard of nursing was very low indeed and those employed in hospitals were completely untrained and usually illiterate. It was so bad that a group of doctors wrote to Sir Henry Parkes asking for his help.

Florence Nightingale’s influence spread to the colonies when Lucy Osborne, a Nightingale-trained nurse, arrived in Sydney in 1868 with five other similarly trained nurses to set up a training school based at Sydney Hospital.

At the same time that Nightingale started her training school in London, Dr Gerald Featherstone and his wife started a similar school, which later became The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.

In the beginning the training was very rudimentary and mothers and family

“The passion for nursing can be found at any age.” members were encouraged to do most of it, but the American Civil War saw a rise in the interest of nurse training and women were taught basic skills and hospital etiquette.

The First World War saw an even stronger spotlight shone on nursing as a most important profession, when more than 3,000 Australian nurses volunteered for service and were exposed to the physical and mental strain of dealing with the huge number of casualties from the battles in which they were involved. They had no choice but to serve for the duration of the War, unless they were badly injured or happened to get married.

Most served with the Army and some with the Royal Australian Navy and others with the Red Cross and the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service. They embarked on the first

convoy of ships that sailed to Europe in November in 1914 and were on hospital ships to receive the wounded at Gallipoli and in hospital camps at Alexandria, Malta and Lemnos Island — where conditions were difficult to impossible due to lack of staff and medical provisions.

After the war, many nurses never recovered from the physical strain but those who did gained new confidence in themselves and their abilities.

The Second World War saw a similar enthusiasm to enlist and 3000 nurses eventually served in a variety of locations including the Middle East, the Mediterranean, Britain, Asia, the Pacific and Australia. Sadly 78 women died; most while in action or as P.O.W.s One dreadful incident took place on February 16th, 1942, on Bangka Island, east of Sumatra in the Indonesian

Another blow fell in May 1943, when, in spite of being clearly lit and marked with a Red Cross, the hospital ship Centaur was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Queensland with a loss of 265 lives.

Today, student nurses enter the workforce via a university education.

One graduate nurse told me that, although she had a degree, she thought that there is more benefit in acquiring skills and knowledge in hospital training: “When a graduate nurse has to face the real world it can come as a shock and many leave the profession.”

She added, “Nursing is flexible and can suit full time, part time or casual work”.

But Paula, who was hospital trained, feels that a University degree is a much better option.

“It is now a profession, not a trade as it used to be. Career paths have improved and now, with better education, comes more responsibility. With further study,more fields are open, like Master’s Degrees and PhDs, and nurses have a greater role in caring for the sick".

There are nurse/practitioners who have the authority to diagnose, order tests and prescribe medications.

Nursing has come a long way and now it is an important part of the medical team.

A SECOND LIFE Julia Hobbs at the recently-relocated “Frockwork Orange”; loves seeing beautiful clothes and accessories given a second chance at life.

A beautiful dress is a wonderful thing; and Julia Hobbs loves seeing them given a second chance.

“It’s a way of giving your clothing a new life,” the owner of the recently-relocated “Frockwork Orange” explained.

Moving from 138 Lords Place to new and larger premises at 145 Kite Street, she sees her unique service as the perfect way to recycle marvellous clothes while providing an outlet for near-as-new apparel.

“They call it ‘upcycling,’ look at this one I just got in; it’s a ‘Kitten D’Amour’ who are sold out of the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney; one of the best dressmakers in Australia,” she enthused, showing other samples on display.

“So many of the dresses are so pretty and elegant, this lady brought in this one because she had changed sizes, we have beautiful French-made shoes… it’s for women who have changed sizes or changed styles,” she said.

Many of the items she sells are literally brand-new.

“We call it ‘BNWT,’ Brand New With Tags’, it’s clothes that they’ve bought and then found they didn’t want to wear or it’s end-of-season items,” Julia explained.

Her business model also ensures that the clothes’

owners profit from the transaction, a win-all-round. “I sell everything on consignment, the owner gets 50 per cent of the sale price, so it’s good for everyone,” she explained.

She also retails jewellery and other accessories and usually requests clothing and other items at the start of each season for those interested in seeing their clothes go to a new home.

“I usually do a seasonal call-out for new stock, I love beautiful handbags and I’m always open to vintage clothes,” she said. “I love it, I’m so thrilled what women bring into me.”

Frockwork Orange features everything from formal wear, evening wear, vintage items, handbags, shoes, jewellery, furs, and more.

The specialist nature of her niche business brings customers from not just throughout NSW, but all of Australia, she said.

“People come from everywhere, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.”

Her lighter, airier, new premises on Kite Street is now the ideal location for her specialist line, she added.

“I opened on the 30th of December from Lords Place,

Wyangala Dam 1955

Wyangala Dam was the place to be on a fine Boxing Day in 1955. About 3000 people flocked to the dam from throughout the district to picnic, swim and see members of Orange Water Sports Club show off their water skiing skills. As well, a carnival with chocolate wheels, foot races and entertainment was organised in aid of Wyangala Dam hall building fund.
