CelcandLlantwitMajorfirstmetInthelastseasonoftheWelshLeaguedivision1inSeptember 2018onawindyandrainyaernoonattheWindmillGround.Celcsnatchedvictory1-0througha ChrisHamgoal.AsuperbperformancefromgoalkeeperRhysPictononhisCelcdebutdeniedthe hostsapoint.LlantwitgainedrevengeinthereturninJanuary2019atCelcPark,winning4-2 againstaCelcteamravagedbyinjury.Celcstartedwithouttheirtworegularcentrebacks,Rhys Williams(suspended)andNiallYeates(stoppedplaying)andthenathalfmetheylosttheir replacementpairingofRakeshPatelandLukeJones.DebutantrightbackKallumHajgatoalsohad togooff.ChrisHamscoredbothCelcgoals.

In2022/23twogoalsbyAlexBonthron(oneapenalty)gaveCelctheir1stwinoftheseasonatthe WindmillGround2-0.InOctoberCelclookedlikebeingdumpedoutoftheWelshCupwhen Majorwere2upmidwaythroughthe2ndhalf,howeverLewisIlespulledagoalbackandinme addedonBonthronequalisedfromthepenaltyspot.Celcdulywonthepenaltyshoot-out3-0 thanksto2greatsavesbykeeperJoeRegan.InthereturnleaguegameatCelcParkLlantwit avengedtheirtwodefeatswitha2-1win.LewisIlesscoredCelc’sgoal.

LastseasonBonthronagainscored2goalsinCelc’s2-1winatCelcParkwhichendedCelc’srun of8successivehomegameswithoutawin.IntheawaygameLewisIlesscoredinhis100thgame forCelcastheteamsdrew1-1.ThisseasonLlantwitwon2-1attheWindmillGround.Oscar BalkwillscoredforCelc.

CwmbranCelcfootballclubwasformedin 1925.Intheearlyyearstheclubwasknownas CYMS(CatholicYoungMen'sSociety).Aerthe immediatesuccessofwinningtheNewport& DistrictDivision2SeconAtlein1925/6there wasthena25yeargapbeforethenexttrophy, thePremierDivisiontlein1950/1.Theclub disbandedinthelate1950’slargelyasa consequenceofnaonalservicecall-upsbuta largeinfluxofjuniorandyouthplayersbrought aboutthereformingoftheclubin1964under thenewnameofCwmbranCatholics.In1970/1 CelcwontheGwentSeniorCup.In1972/3 withplayingmembershipopentoall denominaonstheclubdroppedthecatholic tleandre-namedasCwmbranCelcwinning theGwentAmateurCupandfinishingrunnersupintheGwentPremierLeague. In1979theclubboughtitsownpremisesatOak Street,OldCwmbran,theclub'spresent headquarters.Theclub'sgroundwasin CwmbranParkbutaround1995theymovedto thegroundsoutsideCwmbranStadiumwhich weresharedwithCwmbranCricketclub.The cricketclublatermovedtoCaerleonandCelc obtainedtheleasefromTorfaenCouncil. CelcplayedintheGwentCountyLeagueinthe 1980sand1990sandaergainingpromoonas championsofDivision2in1986/7remainedin the1stdivisionforthenext10seasons. Howeveradisastrousslidefoundtheclub languishinginthe3rddivisionwhenPaul "Dishy"Richardsonbecamemanagerin1999. Hetransformedthesidebringinginexperienced ex-CwmbranTownstalwartsMickeyCopeman andKevinPaynealongsideteenagestriker ShaneWilliamsonwhoforadozenseasonswas topscorer.Thesidewaslaterbolsteredbythe returnofex-professionalsBenGrahamand MarkParfiwhohadstartedtheircareerswith Celcasjuniors.Thereweresuccessive promoonsfromthe3rdto1stdivision between1999and2001andin1999/2000Celc wontheGwentCountyleaguecup.

In2004/5undernewplayer-managerMickey Copeman,theclubwererunners-uptoClydach Waspswhoappliedformembershipofthe WelshFootballLeaguebuttheirgroundwas adjudgedtobenotoftherequiredstandard. Celcappliedinstead.Theirgroundwasalsonot uptostandardbuttheywereabletoshare CwmbranStadiumwithCwmbranTownandthe WelshLeagueacceptedtheclub'sapplicaon. IntheirfirstseasonintheWFL,2005/6,Celc struggledneartheboomofthe3rddivisionall season.InAprilCelctravelledtoChepstow Townneedingawintostayintheleague.They went1-0down.Withminutesofnormalme remainingsubstuteJasonPriceequalisedbuta drawwasnotenough.Inthe9thminuteofme addedonplayermanagerMickeyCopeman wentupforacorner.Theballwasclearedoff thegoal-linebyaChepstowdefender,ithit Copemanonthebackandreboundedintothe net.Celchadachievedalastgaspwinand,by winningtheirfinalmatchagainstSevenSisters, Celcescapedrelegaonongoaldifference. Thefollowingseason,2006/7,Celcnowback attheirupgradedandnewlynamedground, CelcPark,weretransformed.Theyonlylost2 gamesandenjoyeda24matchunbeatenrun. TheywenttoRiscafortheirlastmatchalready promotedbutneededtowintosecurethe ChampionshipaheadofLlanwern.With3 minutesleCelcwere1-0downplayingwith 10menaeraredcardforKevinPayne.Then SammyWinterequalisedwithaspeculavelong rangeshotandinthelastminuteaRisca clearancefoundfullbackBenGrahamoutside thebox.

Hehitaperfectloopingvolleyoverthe goalkeeper'sheadandintothenet.Celcwere champions.

InDivision2Celcconsolidatedtheirposionin 2007/8and2008/9duringwhichthey introducedanumberofplayersfromtheirnew partnershipwithFairwaterHighSchoolFootball AcademyinCwmbranmanagedbyCelccoach DellaCheedy.

In2009/10Celcwerefrontrunnersdesnedto wintheChampionship.Howevertheylosttwo keydefendersatacrucialmeandvitalpoints weredropped.NeverthelessCelcfinishedtheir gamesin1stplaceandwouldwinthetleif PenrhiwceiberfailedtowinatNewcastleEmlyn. Thehomesidewas2-0upatonestagebut Ceiberclawedtheirwaybacktowin3-2and denyCelcthechampionship.Attheendofthe seasonMickeyCopemanstooddownaer7 yearsduringwhichhesecured3promoons whichtooktheclubfromGwentCountyLeague tothetopdivisionoftheWelshLeague. Intheirfirstseasoninthe1stdivision,2010/11 undernewmanagerBenGraham,Celc struggledformuchoftheseasonandwere firmlyplantedintherelegaonzonebuta superbrun-induringwhichtheywon7and drew3of14gamesearnedthem12thplaceout of16.In2011/12agoodstartwasmadeunder AlanDibblewhosteppeddowninSeptember withtheteamin5thplace,tobereplacedby GarethMorgan.EithersideofChristmas,Celc were2ndbuttheyhadadismalendofseason runandagainfinished12th.

In2012/13withheadcoachDellaCheedyatthe helm,Celcstartedbrightlywithsomefine performancesincludinga4-2winversus reigningchampionsCambrian&Clydachbut theylosttheirwayintheNewyearandatone stagewereinlastplace.However,with characteriscdeterminaontheydragged themselvesupthetableandsealedanother seasoninthetopdivisionwitharesounding51winagainstHaverfordwestCounty.Under SteveMorganin2013/14Celc underperformedfinishing4thfromboomand withAfanLidorelegatedfromtheWelsh PremierLeague,Celcwererelegateddespite appealingtoanFAWarbitraon.WithDella Cheedybackasmanagerin2014/15Celc finished7thinDivision2.

In2015/16NickyChurchstartedasmanagerbut heresignedmid-season.ExTonPentreboss DeanMorristookover,wontwomanagerofthe monthawards,andguidedCelctotherunnersupposionandpromoononthebackof10

straightwins.Theclubalsoreachedthequarter finalsoftheWelshCup,goingdown2-1aera bravefightathometoWPLsidePortTalbot. JoshBullwastheWelshLeague’stopscorer with32leaguegoals.

In2016/17,backinthe1stDivision,Celcwent topoftheleagueearlyintheseason.Dean MorrisresignedinMarch2017andfirstteamer LeeChallengertookover,winninghisfirst5 gamesinchargeastheteamendedin6thplace, theirbestposionin5seasonsinthetoper.

In2017/18Celcfinished8thintheleagueand enjoyedtheirbesteverleaguecuprun,reaching thesemi-finalbeforelosingtoLlanelliTown3-0. ChrisHamwasWelshDivision1playerofthe seasonandtopscorerwith28leaguegoals.

In2018/19Celcfinishedadisappoinng10th intheLeaguewithLeeChallengerresigningin March2019.

In2019/20,fortheinauguralseasonofthe CymruLeagueSouth,CelcinstalledNicky MorganandSimonTrumanasthemanagement team.With9newsigningstherewasalotof opmismforasuccessfulseasonbuttheteam nevergotgoingandaera6-1drubbingat PontypriddinJanuarytheclubregreully dismissedthemanagementduo.

DevelopmentteammanagerJamesKinsella tookoverwithMahewWilliamsasassistant, theteamfinishing13thinacurtailedseasondue tothepandemic.

In2020/21onlyonegamewasplayed,in December2020/21,a2-0defeatatPontypridd TownintheNathanielMGLeaguecup.

In2021/22havinglostkeyplayers,Celcwere involvedinabasementbaletoavoid relegaon.Foursuccessivewinslateontook themoutoftheboom3andinthefinal analysisanequaliserinmeaddedonby AndrewHewisavedCelcandtookopponents RiscaUniteddownintotheArdalLeague.Inthe pasttwoseasonsCelchavefinishedcreditable 8thand9thplaceinthetable.

ThisseasonwehaveanewmanagerSimon BerrywhoreplacedJamesaerhedecidedto stepdownfromtheMen's1stteamand concentratesolelyontheWomen’s1stteam.

ABRIEFHISTORYOFLLANTWITMAJOR

LlantwitMajorFootballClubwasformedin1962.Aseleconcommieeselectedtheteamunlentry totheSouthWalesAmateurLeagueSecondDivisionwasgainedin1971.LifeMemberGwynJohnwas appointedasthefirstteammanager.ManagerJohn'steamwerepromotedtothe1stDivisionaer finishingsecondinthe1976–77season.Llantwitconsolidatedinthedivisionbeforeclaimingtheirfirst AmateurLeaguetleundernewmanagerAlanFosterinthe1979–80season.Thiswasclosely followedbytheirsecondchampionshipjustayearlateraerretainingthetleandaddingthe CorinthianCuptoachievethedouble.Thiskickstartedagoldenperiodinthe80'swheretheclubwon anotherdoubleofleagueandCorinthianCupin1983–84.Thehat-trickofCorinthianCupscameinthe 1986–87season.Theclubwerealsorunnersupintheleagueonafurthertwooccasionsduringthe decade.

The1990sbycontrastwasaverymixedperiodfortheclub,firstrelegaonin1991–92underRob Sherman'sleadership,followedbypromoontwoyearslaterwithSteveManningatthehelm.Fast forwardtwoyearsandrelegaon,thismewithrecordappearanceholderPeteLinghamasplayer/ manager.However,theclubmadesuretheywereinthefirstdivisionagainattheturnofthe millennium,themanagementduoofKevPycroandPhilClaygainingpromoonbywinninga comfortableSecondDivisiontle.Theclubspentthenextdecadeconsistentlyflirngwiththeleague tlewithouteverlookinglikeserioustlecontenderswithLlantwitstalwartsTimWasandJohnGuy providingmuchneededstabilityincharge.TheclubalsocamerunnersupintheCorinthianCupin 2005.JohnGuysteppeddownasmanagerin2010followingadecadeasmanagertomoveupstairsas chairman.Guydidthisselflesslyinordertoallowtheintroduconoffreshideasintotheclubfrom newbossKevinReesinpartnershipwithWas.ReesandWasintroducedfleshbloodintothe playingstaffgaininginstantsuccessbyliingtheSWFASeniorCupin2010–11.Thebedrockofthe newplayerswasDarrenRobinsonwhobecameplayer/coach/manageralongwiththeirrepressible Was.

Supportersandrivalries

LlantwitMajorsupportersareknownasthe'WindmillArmy',andcandrawcrowdsofupto250for importantmatchessuchastheir2018tledecideragainstSTMSports.Formanyyears,thenumber onerivalwasSt.Athan,howeverthisrivalryhasdiminishedduetoLlantwit'srisethroughtheleagues. Instead,Pen-Y-BontFChavebecometheopposionmostlookedforwardtobyfansandplayersalike. ArivalryhasalsodevelopedwithAmmanfordAFC,whichbeganwhenaTwiervideopostedbythe LlantwitMajorTwieraccountaera3–1victorylenumerousplayersandsupportersofthe Ammanfordsideintears.

Meanwhile,theclubhasfriendlylinkswithDutchclubFeyenoordRoerdam,BocaJuniorsandPort TalbotTown.

Recentsuccess(2016-onwards)

LlantwitMajorhaveenjoyedincrediblesuccessinrecentyears,risingfromtheamateurdivisionsto theseconderofWelshfootball.ManagerKarlLewishasestablishedastrongsquadofplayersfrom thelocalarea,manyofwhomhavebeenplayingtogetherfortheirenrelives.Themostnotable successsofarwasliingtheWelshFootballLeagueDivisionTwotleinthe2017/18season,inthe club'sfirstseasonatthatlevelhavingbeenpromotedfromDivisionThreetheseasonbefore.Former playersSamSnaithandAdamRoscrowhavegoneontoplayintheWelshPremierLeaguewithCardiff Met,andtheclubalsoenjoyedavictoryoverBarryTownAFC–oneofthebiggestclubsinWales.The WindmillLanestadiumhasalsoseenimprovements,withtheaddionofanewseangareaand concretestandingareas,aswellasimprovementstothebarandclubhouse.Followinga4-3victory overPontypriddTown,KarlLewisannouncedhewouldleavetheclubattheendoftheseason. DarrenRobinsonwasannouncedashisreplacementshortlyaer.

CymruSouth2019–20

Forthe2019–20season,LlantwitwereinauguralmembersoftheCymruSouth.Anumberofimprovementsweremadetothegroundandpitchtobereadyforthecampaign,withthehighlightbeingthe addionofanewmainstand.

Llantwitfinishedtheseasonin11thplace,withthefinalstandingsdeterminedonapointspergame basisduetothecoronaviruscrisis.ThismeantLlantwitfinishedclearofrelegaonandwouldonce againbeintheseconderthefollowingseason.Thehighlightoftheseasonwasthereturnofformer ManagerKarlLewis,whohadoverseenthemostsuccessfulperiodinthehistoryoftheclub.

CymruSouth2021–22

Withthe2020–21campaigncancelledduetotheimpactoftheCOVID-19pandemic,Llantwitonce againremainedintheCymruSouth.Farfromtherelegaonbaletheywerepredictedtoendure, Llantwitledthetableformuchofthe2021–22season,andwerecrownedchampionson18April 2022,followinga3–1victoryawayatUndyAthlec.ItwasanoutstandingcampaignfortheMajor, beangalmosteveryteamintheleagueatleastonce,withSwanseaUniversityFCtheonlyexcepon.

CymruSouth2022–23

Beforethe22/23season,managerKarlLewisdecidedtoleavetheclubtobecomeanassistantat BritonFerryFC.HetooksevencurrentLlantwitplayerswithhim,leavingtheclubwithasignificant rebuild.NewmanagerStevieCampbell-McCarthywasquicklyappointed,whowenttoworkbringing innewplayers.

FormermanagerLewiswouldconnuetoraidtheclub,takingatotalof15formerLlantwitplayers withhimduringthecourseoftheseason.Despitethis,newsigningssuchasMaKimminsandPaolo MarenghienabledLlantwittobeinadecentposionatthehalfwaypointoftheseason,overcominga poorstarttothecampaigntositmidtable.Despiteapoorendtotheseasonwithnowinsfromthe final4,Llantwitstronglybeattheirexpectaonstofinishin7thplace.

CymruSouth2023–24

StevieMcCarthy-Campbellwasdismissedearlyintheseason,replacedbyincomingmanagerBen Stait.TheMajorwereintheboomthreewhenStaittookover,butheboughtaroundahugeimprovementonthepreviousmanager,andwasabletosecuresafetyonthefinaldayoftheseason witha3–0victoryawaytoCarmarthenTown.Llantwithadthebestdefenceintheleagueoverthe secondhalfoftheseason,andwillbeopmiscaboutthenewcampaignastheBenStaiteracan trulybegin.

FenixTrophy

In2023,LlantwitbecamethefirstWelshsidetoplayinthegroupstagesofaUEFAcompeon,by beinginvitedtotheFENIXTrophy.TheyweredrawnagainstsidesfromEnglandandDenmarkinthe groupstages.Llantwitperformedwellthroughoutthecompeon,finishingin2ndplaceinGroupA, includingahistoric1–0victoryoverreigningchampionsBKSkjold.ThismadeLlantwitthefirstteamin WelshfootballhistorytowinaUEFAgroupstagematch.

CwmbranCelc’sdefeatatCelcParktoBaglanDragonshasplacedthemina perilousposionintheCymruSouthrelegaonbalewith2gamestogo.Celchad moreterritorialpossessionthanthevisitorsbuttheysuccumbedtotwogoalswhich, withghterdefendingtheycouldhaveprevented.Thefirstgoalinthe29thminute camefromahopefulpuntforwarddownthelewingbyDylanThomastoThomas DavieswhohadroomtoturninandfashionashotwhichbeatkeeperLewisWatkins atthenearpost.Baglan’s2ndgoalon78minuteswasscoredbyDylanThomaswho reactedquickestontheedgeofthepenaltyareatopounceonaCelchalfclearance todrivetheballlowintothenet.Celc’sbestchancefelltoIsaacPowellinthe2nd halfwhenheworkedhiswaydowntheleintoashoongposion,butkeeper MahewStantonstoodfirmtocomfortablysavetheshot.
