The Gift of Support

AS THE HOLIDAY season comes around, many individual decide to give the gift of support to charity organizations. However, with many reputable and not-so-reputable organizations, it can be difficult to decide where your contribution can do the most good.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate your holiday giving this year.

• Choose a specific cause. While you may have a place in your heart for many causes, choose one specific cause to help narrow down your search. Perhaps a rescue group helped you find the perfect pet; maybe a recent diagnosis has you hoping to support health foundations who are researching cures for that canine disease. A specific goal can help you narrow down to a few organizations you can look at in depth.

• Be sure your ideals and goals align. For example, many “animal rights” groups do not support any type of domestic animal ownership. Providing them with financial support that will be used to help end dog ownership while enjoying your Havanese in your lap is counter-productive. Research the true goals of the organization, not just the appealing advertisements.

• See where your money goes. While administration, fundraising, and competitive employee pay is a necessary part of any successful organization, you want to see that money does go to the cause, not just to more and more TV ads. Sites like CharityNavigator.org, CharityWatch.org, or Guidestar.org can help with the transparancy of larger organizations.

• Double check the credibility of the organization. Unfortunately, scams happen, so don’t immediately agree to provide your money to any mail or phone call. Checking for a 503(c) non-profit status or going back to the websites in step 3 can help you make sure they are who they say they are.

• Remember that money isn’t the only donation. Depending on your chosen cause, donating items such as blankets or dog food, or donating your professional skills or good old fashioned hard work, can be appreciated as much or even more than any check you write.

With these tips in mind, you should feel confident that regardless of what you give this holiday season, it is doing great things for a cause close to your heart.

BOOK REVIEW:

HCNC Recipes for Four-Legged and Two-Legged Souls Reviewed by Linda Strike THE HAVANESE Club of Northern California recently released their club cookbook and it is quite an outstanding contribution to our world of Havanese.

Three club members, Joe Chen, Rafe Schindler and Pattie Zielke were the primary contributors of recipes for the nicely designed tome, but there was good participation from other club members and others that are not club members from around the country. It’s nice to see a group working together so well to produce a quality product.

The recipes are generally speaking broken into the usual categories (Breakfast, Appetizers & Beverages, Entrees (American and International) and Desserts. A final filip is the addition of a section on Canine Specialties (more on that later).

Some of the recipes are quite simple and easy to prepare, others take more skill and time. One note, although the Table of Contents notes that Quick and Easy Recipes are designated as such, we were able to find very few that were so designated even though recipes such as “Simple Easy Chili” are included.

The differentiation between American and International Entrees is a bit confusing, with Oeste’s Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas included in the American section and Quick and Easy Green Chile Chicken Enchilada Casserole included in the International section. Anyone looking for an American Entrée or an International Entrée should peruse both sections before settling on a recipe to cook for dinner!!

The International section brings the most interesting and challenging recipes, with offerings such as Narsai’s Rack of Lamb, Assyrian (contributed by noted chef Narsai David) and Hainan Chicken and Rice (contributed by Joe Chen) which, by the time you get through with the six sauces/condiments, consumes nearly three and one-half pages!! Sounds delicious!!!

The Desserts section provides quite a variety of choices and there is even a gluten-free recipe to make it so au courant.

Canine Specialties is a real treat (had to get that in there). There are recipes for dog foods (raw and cooked), and treats such as jerky and peanut butter treats.

An important part of the Canine Specialties section is the inclusion of breeding and whelping recipes such as Post-Whelping Pudding and Myra Savant Harris’s Puppy Formula as well as two other Puppy Formula recipes. While many have these recipes available somewhere, the real joy of this cookbook is having the recipes that are needed at critical times all assembled in one place. We recommend that every breeder tuck a copy of this cookbook into their whelping supply materials so that the recipes are at your fingertips when you need them.

OUR HOLIDAY ISSUE starts off with a very, very unsettling note.

Very recently a recognized Havanese breeder and a member of the Havanese Club of America lost possession of her dogs to county authorities and was charged with more than 150 misdemeanor counts relating to animal neglect and lack of proper care. Facts are still being determined, however it brings attention to the fact that it is important for all of us to focus on the care of our wonderful Havanese.

Many of us came into this breed between 1999 and 2003, acquiring our first Havanese in that time frame. Those dogs that are still with us now range in age from 11 years to 15 years of age or more.

For several months now, the editorial staff at the HOTLINE has been planning a special issue for Spring of 2015. Our next issue of the HavaneseHOTLINE will focus on senior dogs – their care, things to watch for, grooming the senior dog and the contingency planning that we should all have in place.

We’ll be offering special advertising rates on color half-page and quarter-page ads (camera-ready, please, or there will be an additional charge). DYK? Researchers looking for a Gum Disease Vaccine PERIODONTAL (GUM) DISEASE Is the most common clinical condition in adult dogs. By only three years of age, most dogs show some signs of disease, which can lead to pain, gum damage, and lost teeth. In a recent health survey, many Havanese owners expressed concern about the mouth and dental health of their dogs.

To address this common concern, the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation (CHF) recently awarded two research grants to improve the oral health of dogs.

Dr. Paola Massari, PhD, of Boston Medical Center aims to develop an effective canine periodontal disease vaccine.

Dr. Django Martel, DVM, and his colleagues at the Animal Medical Center will establish whether the use of antibiotic gel therapy reduces periodontal disease.

Important note to judges: The six critical elements of breed type listed here are in judging order, not in order of importance. All should be given equal weight in judging, regardless of whether they are visible on the go around or only on the table.

THE JUDGE’S CORNER:

Talking Tails IN EACH EDITION of the HavaneseHOTLINE we pose a question to several judges on a topic of Havanese interest. We appreciate the prompt, thoughtful responses of the three participating judges, Johnny Shoemaker, Lani McKennon and Howard Yost, especially to enable us to meet our holiday issue deadline. Questions submitted by Tina Hicks.

Our standard states, “The tail is high-set and arches forward up over the back. It is plumed with long, silky hair. The tail plume may fall straight forward or to either side of the body. While standing, a dropped tail is permissible.”

Do you feel you usually see correct tails? Do you see many that either lack sufficient arch and flag in the air or are tightly curled? How much do faulty tails affect your assessment of the dog, standing and moving? Does a tail that falls off show-side impact your assessment?

And finally: Does a cute wag of that tail have any influence on your judging?

Judge Johnny Shoemaker, NV : I do think the tails are getting better in Havanese. They are much better than when the breed was first recognized. I think the desired outline is altered if you have a curled/double curled tail or a snap tail. They will all lie flat on the back. I also believe that if you do not have the topline rising slightly from the withers to the rump you will not have the desired outline and it will also affect the high-set of the tail.

I do not see as many tails that lack sufficient arch and flag as I did when I first starting judging Havanese. The tail is the finishing touch on the Havanese and when you do not have the proper tail set and carriage, which should be high-set and plumed with long, silky hair, you do not have a finished body. I do not care what side the tail falls, as it is allowed to fall on either side. As long as the rest of the body is quality, it is no concern to me.

Although cute is not in the breed standard of any breed that I know of, I would say that a cute wagging tail is always welcome in my ring. That indicates to me good temperament and attitude.

As Jean Fournier used to say to me, not having the correct tail is like leaving the frosting off the birthday cake…I agree with Jean.

Judge Lani McKennon, CA: Incorrect tail carriage affects the overall outline of the breed. It is the arch that matters. Snap tails don’t “fit” the picture. Where the plume falls is less important than THAT it arches and falls.

Tail SET is anatomical; tail CARRIAGE is attitude.

It should look like a Havanese, move like a Havanese, and behave like a Havanese. The Havanese is a happy, playful breed and should behave like it. A wagging tail is a good indicator.

Judge Howard Yost, NC: No, I do not usually see correct tails. The most common fault is lack of arch. The high tail set and proper arch is critical to the straight topline with a slight rise. I like to think of the tail and tail set balancing with the head and neck to create this unique outline.

A cute wagging tail has a positive influence on my judging because the word “friendly” is in the current standard as one of the temperament qualities. The wagging tail is an outward expression of an inwardly happy dog.

Top Facts You Aren’t Told About Vaccines

by W. Jean Dodds, DVM A RETROSPECTIVE cohort study1 of 1.25 million dogs vaccinated at 360 veterinary hospitals found: • Vaccines prescribed on a one-dose-fits-all basis, rather than by body weight.

• 38 adverse events per 10,000 dogs vaccinated.

• A genetic predisposition to adverse events.

Risk for adverse events: • Were inversely related to dog weight.

• Increased for dogs up to two years of age, then declined.

• Were greater for neutered versus sexually intact dogs.

• Increased as number of vaccines given together increased.

• Increased after the third or fourth vaccination.

Now that we’ve had more than a decade of scientificallybased national guidelines and policy about companion animal vaccines, why are certain veterinarians reluctant to embrace this knowledge?

The national policies of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and American Academy of Feline Physicians (AAFP) are based on scientific facts and challenge study data. Do vaccine industry representatives inform veterinarians about the duration of immunity and true regional and local needs for some types of vaccines?

Older vaccine guidelines encourage a system that: • Fails to offer options (such as titers) to clients.

• Does not address pet owner awareness and concerns.

• Puts public trust of veterinarians in jeopardy.

• Does not counter the perceived conflict of interest (vet revenue versus client options).

• Fails to recognize or denies adverse events.

• Needs a science-based legal standard for rabies vaccination.

• Is at odds with medical goals in the face of present knowledge, and breaches the principle to “do no harm.”

Reasons for resistance to current guidelines: • Still controversial.

• Complacency, denial and avoidance (previous training ingrained, too busy to fit in more learning).

• Failure to obtain client informed consent.

• Still vaccinate animals with illness, chronic diseases, and prior adverse events, despite label indications for use in healthy animals, they may think disease prevention more important than risk of adverse effects.

• Erroneously believe rabies boosters are needed legally even with pets at high risk for reactions.

Serum titers for some disease agents must reach a certain level to indicate immunity. For those that produce so-called sterile immunity (i.e. canine distemper virus, canine parvovirus, and canine adenovirus-2 virus), the presence of any measurable antibody means protection.

What does more than a decade of experience with vaccine titer testing reveal?

Published studies in refereed journals show that 90-98% of dogs and cats that have been properly vaccinated develop good, measurable antibody titers to the infectious agent measured. In general, serum antibody titers to the “core” vaccines, along with any natural exposures, last a minimum of 7-9 years, and likely are present for life.

Practical Solutions: Education, Education, Education!

• Understand duration of vaccinal immunity.

• Accept potential for adverse events.

• Recognize adverse events rather than dismiss or deny them.

• Inform clients of issues and encourage options.

• Offer titers for core vaccines triennially or more often.

• Explain optional vaccines may not be needed.

• Educate about breed and other predispositions.

Alternatives to older vaccine practices: • Avoid unnecessary vaccines or over-vaccinating.

• Caution in vaccinating sick or febrile animals.

• Tailor specific minimal vaccine protocol for dogs/cats breeds or families at risk for adverse reactions.

• Start vaccination series later, despite breeder and pet owner concern for infectious disease risk, especially for parvovirus.

• Alert caregiver to watch animal behavior and health after boosters.

• Avoid revaccination of those with prior adverse events.

Vaccine Conclusions for Canines2: • Factors that increase risk of adverse events 3 days after vaccination: • Young adult age • Small-breed size • Neutering/spaying • Multiple vaccines given per visit These risks should be communicated to clients.

The Hips Don’t Lie An Interview about Hip Dysplasia Screenings with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Interview by Kat Smith

BREEDING HAPPY, HEALTHY dogs is paramount to any responsible breeder. Part of that includes routine health testing for genetic conditions that would have a negative impact on the dog’s health or quality of life.

One of these conditions common in almost dogs of any breed or mix is hip dysplasia, which is the term for a poorly formed ball-and-socket joint. While a well made hip joint ensures a lifetime of easy motion, a poorly made joint can lead to degenerative joint disease, arthritis, pain, and even require surgical correction.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) offers evaluations of hip x-rays for hip dysplasia. A “normal” hip is rated Fair, Good, or Excellent, and these are the dogs who would be under continued consideration for a breeding program.

To answer a few of our questions about hip dysplasia and screenings, we spoke with Greg Keller, DVM, MS, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR). Dr. Keller has worked for the OFA since 1987 and has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services for the past 17 years.

HOTLINE: Can you explain what process and criteria are used to evaluate the hips? When an image (radiograph or digital) arrives at the OFA the image is checked against the information on the application. I then screen every submission issuing a hip/elbow grade while accessing for diagnostic quality.

If the quality is not suitable (poor positioning, too light or too dark or lack of detail) the referring veterinarian is notified that a repeat study is requested.

If the dog is less than 24 months of age I am the only radiologist that gives a preliminary hip and/or elbow evaluation.

On animals 24 months of age or older they are independently evaluated by three randomly selected, Board Certified Radiologist, from a pool of 20-25 consulting radiologists. These consulting radiologists are in private practice or academia and located throughout the United States. Each radiologist evaluates the animal’s status concerning the age, sex and breed and independently reports the findings to OFA. The radiologists is concerned with deviation from normal for the breed in questions, congruency and confluence of the hip joint (degree of fit) are considered which dictates the conformational differences within normal; i.e., excellent good and fair. If the radiologists note incongruency or subluxation with or without secondary degenerative joint disease/ osteoarthritis then the grades can range from borderline through dysplastic which included; mild moderate and severe, 12

depending on the extent of degenerative changes present.

The final grade is based on the general agreement of the three outside consulting radiologists, i.e. two goods and an excellent will result in a final grade of good; two fairs and a good will result in final grade of fair.

Some members have expressed concern that multiple x-rays of the same dog can yield different ratings. Is it possible for dysplastic hips be made to look normal (Fair, Good, or Excellent), or for normal hips to look dysplastic, with the right positioning? What does the OFA do to try to minimize the risk of inaccurate readings? Patient positioning can be an issue and that is the reason all images are initially screened by myself prior to their release to the outside consulting radiologists. If I feel that there is a positioning/ technique issue than the veterinary is notified that a retake is required. In addition the outside consulting radiologists also have the option of declining to evaluate an image based on the positioning or technique.

Can an owner request a re-read of x-rays by different OFA vets? If a second set of films is submitted, do the initial set come into play at all? Once the consensus evaluation is issued on a given radiograph the OFA does not allow re-evaluation of that particular image; however, the OFA does allow the owner to have the patient re-radiograph and resubmit for a second evaluation. At this time the prior image is available for comparison by the consulting radiologists but they are unaware of what grade the dog received on the first evaluation. The resubmit essentially goes through as a new blind study.

Are ratings based only on comparison to members of the same breed? If so, within what timeframe (all time, annual, quarterly, per batch evaluated)? Some of our membership feel that if submitted along several dysplastic x-rays, a dog will end up with an unfairly high rating, simply due to the context in which it was evaluated. Each dog is compared to other members of the same breed and approximate age based on all images evaluated by OFA over time. Each dog is evaluated independently based on the dog’s merit and is no way influenced by immediately prior submissions of other members of the same breed.

How should preliminary evaluations play into breeding decisions for a small/toy breed? If a dog is rated normal (Excellent, Good, or Fair) how necessary is an adult rating?

OFA preliminary evaluations are generally reliable especially if the preliminary evaluation is issued at approximately 12 months of age and the dog has received either an excellent, good or moderate or severe hip rating. However, this prelim data is based on a 95% reliability of correctly identifying dysplastic dogs at 24 months of age and therefore prelims should be reevaluated after 24 months of age especially if the dog received an initial fair or mildly dysplastic evaluation.

Currently, Havanese are ranked #102 for Hip Dysplasia in OFA’s databased, with 3,419 evaluations, 10% dysplastic overall and 6.0% dysplastic for those born 2006-2010. Are abnormal results that are not released publicly included in this ranking? The 3419 evaluations performed by OFA are for all Havanese submitted including abnormal results that were not released to the public.

Do you feel it is important to continue to include hip dysplasia screenings in Havanese “core” health testing?

The vast majority of Havanese hip evaluations have been performed since the year 2000 (2667). For birth years 20012005 there were 1365 hip evaluations with 8.8% excellent and 7.3% dysplastic. For birth years 2006-2010 there were 1302 hip evaluations with 10.4% excellent and 6% dysplastic. There is a general trend here of not only the reduction in prevalence of hip dysplasia but also an increase in the best hip phenotype which is excellent. Personally I see no reason to discontinue the hip dysplasia screening as part of the core health testing for the Havanese.

Holiday Hazards & Havanese

By Tina Hicks THIS TIME OF year most people are scurrying around, getting ready for the holidays. You may be planning an out of town trip, or expecting guests unfamiliar to your Havanese. Whether home or away, your dog’s routine may be changed, and he may not receive the attention he is accustomed to. Boredom and stress may make even well behaved dogs do things out of character.

At home, make sure to remind guests that pets may get into their luggage, gift boxes, etc., especially if they smell food. Offer safe, out of reach places to stow them, or ask that they be sure 14

luggage is zipped and door to room is shut.

Havanese may bolt outside in a strange place or when guests are visiting. Be sure everyone is aware of your pets.

Carol Croop offered some wonderful tips in the Summer 2014 HavaneseHOTLINE, addressing avoiding the loss of pets while traveling. She suggests attaching paper key tags to your dog’s collar, writing local contact information (hotel or visiting address, your cell phone number, other local info) on it, even if they’re microchipped. Your dog may have a metal ID tag with your HavaneseHOTLINE Issue 4: Winter 2014

home address, but that doesn’t do much good if you’re miles away and want your dog returned quickly. She also suggests keeping a digital lost dog poster stored on your phone or ipad, including photos, description, reward information, and space to include where the dog was lost and phone numbers to call. Digital copies of your dog’s vaccination records and other pertinent documents should also be kept on your digital device, in case they’re needed. Be sure to read Carol’s article, “It’s a Trip” in its entirety in the Summer 2014 HOTLINE. Pets are often displaced to a bedroom, hotel room or other areas they are not used to, causing stress, boredom and fear.

They may bark, soil carpets, chew or find other mischievous and inventive ways to express their displeasure in the unfamiliar territory. Their crate with familiar odors should make them feel more secure. Keep your dog busy with chew toys, Kongs filled with goodies, etc. Make use of pee pads and possibly a citronella bark collar. If you are concerned you may not be able to keep your pet out of trouble when company visits or when traveling, consider boarding.

Our clever Havanese are pros at finding other ways to get in trouble during the holidays. Although sap from the Christmas tree (which should be anchored if you have pets or small children) and holiday plants can cause toxicity, severe sickness is more often caused by ingesting chocolate, Xylitol from sugarfree candy or table scraps. Be sure to insist others respect your wishes not to offer your dog foods other than their standard dog foods/treats.

Amarylis plants and lilies have significant toxicities, so be sure to keep them out of reach. Other holiday plants that produce toxicity in dogs are Christmas cacti, mistletoe, poinsettias and holly, but usually to a lesser degree. It is recommended to keep the Animal Poison Control phone number on hand.

Their toll-free number is 1-888-426-4435. If you think your dog has ingested a toxic substance, they can advise you on toxin potentials and how severe they may be. Or call your veterinarian for advice for other emergencies. If after hours, call your local emergency clinic. When it comes to toxicities, time is of the essence!

Dogs like to explore with their mouths. Small pieces from toys, decorations, ribbon, tinsel and just about anything new can be attractive to your pup to ingest, sometimes causing severe stomach upset, or gastrointestinal blockage which could require surgery. Beware of silica gel packs found in electronics, shoe boxes, medication bottles, etc. Be sure all medications are out of reach for the dangers of the silica and the medications themselves.

New Years fireworks are terrifying for some dogs. Keep those pets indoors when they are expected. Crate your dogs if you think they may breach doors, and leash them for potty outings.

Consider Thundershirts; or medical calming treatments well in advance of the noise-making.

Although not all potential hazards are included, maybe these precautions will help keep your beloved Havanese safe during the holidays.

DYK? Dry Air = Matted Hair WITH WINTER UPON us, the rain, snow, or slush can make it a challenge to keep your Havanese looking their best. Many of us have developed a good skill set to manage our region’s winter weather.

But what about inside? With warm, dry air circulating, your Havanese may not only experience dry skin, but can also tangle and mat more than usual. Dry air can cause more static electricity build up, and as your Hav’s hair strands lift and move with static, they can tangle into each other, too.

What can you do to help this? For one, never brush a dry coat. Coat the bottom of a spray bottle with your favorite conditioner, add warm water, and shake to mix. A light misting before you brush will help prevent static build-up. Two, you may want to switch to a slightly heavier conditioner for the winter baths. And finally, running a humidifier in the room or rooms you and your Hav spend the most time in will help keep the air moist and the static at bay.

Our Va-Stay with Connor in Germany Travel Fun with your Havanese by Cathy Abel

WHAT AN ADVENTURE! Travel to Europe with our new Havanese pup.

The idea was great, though several weeks before going we started to realize just what sort of preparation would be involved. Glad to have the advantage of time on our hands, our friendly wise and generous breeder, one small, easy-going Havanese, and a European family and country who would embrace our new family member. Our German family was looking forward to seeing their grandson interact with our new dog, and embraced having the dog in the house, even though they live in a village where their own dogs were, in the past, only outside. We all laughed to see Connor bark at sparrows swerving impossibly high overhead and drink their ground-level water on a hot day: it was huge fun simply to watch the fluff of our young Connor chase a far-flung ball down the drive. There was so much garden, green, and space around us, without fencing. It was puppy heaven.

Connor tended not to stray far, thankfully, and our idyllic summer holiday at the family home place passed without mishap. Once Connor came back with an unknown cyclist he’d decided to follow down the road: at least twice we found Connor had crossed a wooden canal bridge and was frolicking happily in a neighbor’s field. Connor became, very quickly, very close with our German family and brought us all

together as we remarked what a good, happy dog he is, what he could do, how much he ate, if he liked our trip to the neighboring city…

BARN HUNT The New Event Taking Dog Sports

BARN HUNT with Havanese? Who would ever think this breed could do it? I can only speak from my experience. I guess this would not be a sport that would come to mind as a Havanese owner, but I have learned to never count them out of anything! They may not be the best, but they are always willing to give it a go.

In Barn Hunt, they really seem to have fun, blasting around the course, those little faces digging through the hay. My Havanese have won the Small Dog class over a bunch of terriers more than once.

Just recently, my Lacey was second in Open Small Dog, and Blaze was first in Novice Small Dog, completing the course and finding the rat in 48 seconds to earn his Rat Novice (RATN) title.

The American Kennel Club does not hold or oversee Barn Hunt competitions, but does accept it as part of their Title Recognition Program. This means AKC will add Barn Hunt titles to your dog’s official record for an administration fee.

As part of the official record, the title will appear on pedigrees or in catalogs like an AKC conformation championship, rally, obedience, or agility title.

Like most sports, Barn Hunt has different levels, and each class is also divided by small, medium and large dogs: Instinct level: There are three tubes that are not hidden. One contains a rat, one has bedding, and one is empty.

On the judge’s GO you go to the tubes and watch for your dog’s reaction. You are looking for your dog to somehow alert you that there is a rat in the correct tube. You must call out “RAT!”, once you see your dog alert. You have 1 minute 30 seconds to do this. If you are correct, your dog earns its Instinct title RATI. You only need one PASS (qualifying run), but you can enter Instinct and Novice until you earn the RATN (Novice) title.

Novice level: The judge will build a course that contains one or more tunnels out of hay. The dog must go through the tunnels. Hay bales will be stacked, and your dog must do a climb.

All four feet must go up on the hay bale. There will be three tubes hidden: one with a rat, one with bedding, and HavaneseHOTLINE Issue 4: Winter 2014

one that is empty. You enter the course, wait in the start box, remove the leash and collar, then start on the judge’s GO. You have two minutes to do the tunnel, climb, and find the rat. You need 3 PASS legs to earn the RATN title.

You are allowed to encourage the dog to search, but cannot touch the dog or bales of hay. If you call “RAT” and are wrong, you fail. My Havanese do not have a strong alert. They are very subtle, and I have to watch them very closely.

Some Barn Hunts are outdoors, and some are actually in barns. There are lots of smells, and the barns are particularly challenging.

Open level: Both of my Havanese are in Open now. The course is much larger, and there are more hiding places. The tunnel is “L” shaped, and the bales are stacked higher. There are two rats, two empty tubes, and one with bedding.

Dogs must find two rats…one or both may be up in the stacked hay. You have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to do it all. It is a big difference from Novice to Open, and many dogs take a long time to complete this level. It takes 3 PASS legs to earn the RATO title.

Senior level: There’s one empty tube, three litter tubes, and four rat tubes. At least two rat tubes must be elevated.You

have 3 minutes and 30 seconds to find all the rats. The tunnel must include two to three turns. One place on the course must have bales stacked four high, but may have more places. There can be more than one official tunnel on the course. 3 PASS legs are needed to earn the RATS title.

Master level: In this level there are ten tubes- one to five tubes will contain rats.

All tubes without rats will contain litter.

The number of rat tubes will change with every competitor. Any/all live tubes may either be on the floor, be elevated, or a mix of both. The tunnel must have at least two turns, and may have as many as the judge wishes. The tunnel may have more than one exit, as long as the first exit is after the execution of the two turns. More than one place on the course must have bales stacked higher than four high. You have 4 minutes and 30 seconds for this level, and need 5 PASS legs for the RATM title.

I got to watch a couple of Masters runs at the last trial. They were amazing!

There are also Barn Hunt RATCH (Champion) and RATCHX levels, but I have not seen any competitors at this level.

I actually don’t train at all for Barn Hunt. There are several fun tests and seminars offered in our area. I have

Introduction to Barn Hunt BARN HUNT is based on the skills historically used by itinerant “ratcatchers” in traveling the countryside, ridding farms of vermin, thus helping conserve and preserve food grains and cutting down on disease.

The purpose of Barn Hunt is to demonstrate a dog’s vermin hunting ability in finding and marking rats in a “barn like” setting, using straw/hay bales to introduce climbing and tunneling obstacles in the dog’s path.

Barn Hunt is for any breed or mix of dog who loves to hunt and can fit through an 18” wide gap between two hay bales. It is a sporting event, and as such there will be levels of difficulty, titles and championships to be attained. Teamwork will win the game.

At all times, the safety of the dogs, handlers, and rats is to be of paramount importance. Rats will be humanely handled and safely confined in aerated PVC tubes; Barn Hunt is not intended to harm or kill rats.

attended a couple. I do feel that training more would be beneficial, but just don’t have the time.

About the rats: I do not own a rat.

The rats used in trials I’ve been to are owned by someone who is a competitor. There are LOTS of rules about rat handling; they can be found on the Barn Hunt web site.

I can only speak for what I’ve seen, but the rats are handled very carefully and never put in danger. They are frequently changed out and rested. The tubes are handled carefully and it is up to the rat wrangler to make sure they are removed from the course. The rats are kept safe and comfortable in their cages until it’s their turn to hide.

I was talking to the rat owner from the last trial I attended. The rats were all male and had names. They all live in his home. I have never seen anything to make me feel uncomfortable about the rats’ well being.

Of course, it is the owner’s responsibility to restrain their dog when the rat wrangler is removing rats the dog has located. Like any dog sport, it is our responsibility to know our dogs.

Aggressive behavior is an instant NQ (non-qualifying score).

I don’t get to do Barn Hunts very often with my dogs, but I really enjoy it. I feel any dog breed can do it. There are more fun tests and practice trials popping up all the time. It’s getting very popular. People should not be afraid to try it - young, old, physically fit or not, anyone can do it. Just trust your dog. They all have some sort of hunting instinct. I did not have a lot of training for this. I went to one class and a couple of run-thrus. I really don’t expect to reach Master level, but will have fun trying.

Like I said before, Havanese are game for anything. That’s why we all love our breed!

Holiday Dog Recipes HERE ARE two simple recipes to share the holiday goodness with your favorite Havanese.

SHINY RED BOX DOG TREATS (AKA Turkey and Sweet potato)

2 cups turkey, cooked 1 cup water 1 cup sweet potato 1 tablespoon molasses 1-1/2 cups oatmeal, dry/uncooked Cranberries 1. Shred turkey into small pieces. Put turkey and water in food processor until it makes a thick paste. Add sweet potato and molasses then puree.

2. Pour mixture into large bowl and mix well with oatmeal. The dough should not be runny or too wet. If so, add more oatmeal.

3. Spoon dough by teaspoonfuls onto dehydrator racks or baking sheets. Place a cranberry on each treat pressing it slightly. Dehydrate 4 to 5 hours, or bake in a low-heat oven, until they are dry, crunchy, or your desired consistency.

Because all ingredients are pre-cooked, there is no harm to a soft center. I made these very small - bite size for small dogs. It yields quite a bit! As they are preservative-free, be sure to store them in the refrigerator.

YOGURT DROPLETS Easy, simple and healthy dog treats!

Low Fat High Quality Yogurt (not flavored) 1. Using either a food grade squeeze bottle (which works the best) or a pastry sleeve with a fine to medium tip, or a plastic bag (of the Ziploc variety) with a corner cut off…

2. Simply make small droplets (about 1 inch in diameter) on a baking sheet that fits in your freezer.

3. After the tray is filled with droplets place the tray in the freezer for an hour.

4. Then transfer the droplets to the storage container of your choice and keep frozen.

Easy to make and the Havanese love them (let them warm for a minute or two before sharing with the Havs). They are also good because of the probiotics in the yogurt. So these are healthy and easy to make. Give them a try!

Delaware Valley Havanese Club

held another successful health clinic.

The clinic, which was held on September 21 at Radnor Veterinary Hospital, Wayne, PA, welcomed all breeds. We offered numerous tests administered on-site by specialists, including OFA cardiac (auscultation and Doppler), CERF, patellas, microchips and radiology (for hips and elbows). The club hosted a total of 144 dogs representing a myriad of different breeds (44 of which were havanese), with 175 tests total. The club thanks all who participated!

Greater New York Havanese Club has had a busy year and a good one. Last month,

we selected a winner for our “Clone Your Dog” raffle that was announced at the Suffolk County Kennel Open Show on July 27, and ran through the Suffolk County Dog Show on September 27.

Now we’re waiting for the winner to submit a variety of pictures of her dog so that the stuffed “clone” can be made to order.

Our latest event – our Havaween party, was a huge success.

Held on Oct. 25 at Ruby & Jacks Doggy Shack on Second Avenue in NYC. The room was beautifully done up in Halloween décor and more than 25 dogs - most decked out in costume, attended with approximately 35 humans. For two hours there were happy frolicking dogs running around, playing with each other. All well behaved, and believe it or not……no barking. It was a joy to watch. Our gracious hosts provided staff to help, along with “Cuban music” playing over their sound system. As if that wasn’t enough, we also had a play tunnel and dogs took turns running through it.

Meanwhile their humans were having a good time too, munching on donuts and drinks while watching the antics of their pets and entering into raffles to benefit them and their pet. Three themed baskets were raffled off. “The NY Luxury” – included some wine (for the human), a hand knitted tuxedo sweater, a stuffed lobster toy and much more. “The Sports One” included floating toys, tug toys, boots, a neoprene safety vest and more. “The All In One” basket included frames and toys galore.

Finally there were two $50 gift cards donated by Pet Central and a goody bag for everyone to take home. Of course one little guy got very curious by the smell of new toys in the bag and…. you know it – got his head stuck in the bag handles.

A typical Havanese, he neither barked nor panicked, just pranced and waited patiently to be relieved of his burden.

To top everything off there was a professional photographer taking pictures throughout the day. All in all a perfect Havaween Event.

Entries were high all four days of the cluster, with 44 entries on Saturday. We were all in a whirl with the weekend’s activities, including our awards luncheon, annual meeting, and fundraising raffle.

A special thanks goes to Harry Bennett and Chip Rowan who provided a beautifully decorated table full of trophies for Saturday’s show. Peggy Shafferman organized the trophy donations for Thursday, Friday and Sunday, along with coordinating and managing Saturday’s successful fundraiser.

Dedicated Magnolias Susan Hines and Nancy Case once again put together a fabulous luncheon in the show barn.

Our special guest and sweepstakes judge was Amri Aquilera.

Amri, a University of Havana Geodesy and Hydrography Engineering graduate, currently lives in Miami, Florida with his three Havanese. He was born and raised in Havana, Cuba where the Bichon Habanero was his family companion.

Amri became involved in showing and breeding the Havanese under the mentorship of Alfredo Sanz Peraza – the

owner and breeder of the famous CH Puppy. He continues to study Havanese conformation and standards in other countries, and he also breeds occasionally under the FCI kennel name of Don Habanero.

Amri presented a thoughtful and informative history of the Havanese in Cuba at our Annual Awards Luncheon. We are hoping that our video of his presentation will be acceptable for publication--We will let you all know!!

The SMHC members garnered many awards for their champions, grand champions and performance events. We are especially proud of the number of performance awards our club members receive each year.

We all enjoyed the many dinners and lunches with our new and old friends and appreciate their support. The Southern Magnolia Havanese Club looks forward to this event every year and we thank everyone that helped make this a success--please join us next year for a rollicking good time!

First let me say as the holiday season is upon us, Happy Holidays from our homes to yours and a blessed New Year. For those of you heading to Eukanuba this year, be safe and good luck and congratulations on a wonderful year, especially the ownerhandlers! Connie Banitt, we are so proud of you and Tattoo [for finishing #1 Havanese in the National Owner Handler Series and #12 among all breeds]!

For those who followed Winnie’s misadventure, we are so happy for Anna’s beautiful girl Winnie to be back safe and overall sound after such an ordeal!

CCHC is excited to report that there will be a concurrent Regional Specialty along with Sweepstakes at the new Fayetteville/Salisbury Kennel Club show in Concord, North Carolina, the weekend of May 29-31, 2015. Our specialty will be on May 30, 2015. Frank Washabaugh will be judging the specialty and Jennifer Paeltz Clevenger will be judging sweeps. The word is that the other toy judges for the rest of the weekend are awesome, and a Havanese Judges education seminar will be graciously presented by Jennifer. We will also have our always spectacular basket raffle. Lorrilee DeMeo Slaybaugh is our trophy chair if anyone wants to sponsor their favorite class.

So plan on coming to North Carolina in May/June as it is full of possibilities from Fletcher’s 4-day show before our specialty followed by two other 2-day shows in the beautiful WNC mountains in Fletcher and Waynesville!

Orlando, Florida. There will be three all breed shows on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Specialty day will be on Friday, and the AKC Eukanuba shows will be on Saturday and Sunday, with Havanese on Saturday.

The Mid Florida Havanese Club will be holding a match, fun day, and meeting on Saturday, November 22, in Zephyrhills, Florida. Jan Naigus will be doing a demonstration on rally, and she will be setting up a rally course for anyone who would like to try it.

The Mid Florida Havanese Club will be holding a concurrent specialty in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday, June 13, 2015, in conjunction with the Sunshine State Cluster, which will include shows by the St. Petersburg Dog Fanciers Association and the Greater Venice Florida Dog Club. There will be five chances for you to show your Havanese.

dangling, eyes happy, cycling to the beer garden and back with the whole family. Connor, on leash, also trotted alongside our bicycles for very short bits. He had happiness with a huge bone, offered at an outdoor beer garden, while we sat under spreading walnut trees on benches with beer steins and pretzels, with kids and folks from neighboring tables wanting to pet and get to know our dog—a memorable vignette. We strolled the Isar in Munich with friends in the summer rain, waiting while Connor, and our son, found the perfect stick.

And our preparations to get there? We looked first into airline travel requirements, each airline having different restrictions on international flights. The cost of travel to Germany with United/Lufthansa would be approximately $100 each way. As with most Havanese, Connor is under 20 pounds, and would fit in an airline approved on-board carry-on mesh travel kennel fitting specific dimensions, to be stowed in front of our feet. Our dog was also lucky, in the sense that some airlines restrict the number of on-board pets to two per flight: there are further restrictions for seating with your companion depending on how the plane is designed.

Next came the restrictions particular to the country. We looked at the country-specific import and travel restrictions and certifications on the official diplomatic mission website for Germany. The German Annex II certification was about 6 pages, to be filled out in either English or German, dated and signed by our accredited vet, and stamped with an official seal.

While putting the documentation together, we worked with our vet.

Connor would be required to be healthy, have had a rabies shot that was un-expired and given after his microchip implant but not prior to 21 days before departure, and have a working microchip. Not all vets will offer to do the required paperwork, and, although we were with a terrific doc, we ultimately shifted to a local one who was recommended by our original vet as one who was not adverse to paperwork and internet searches, and also had some expertise with travel forms.

Connor was brought in for a well-puppy check, when the vet also recommended practicing travel with Connor in the mesh carrier bag and even testing the anti-anxiety drug she would prescribe for adverse effects. While the vet agreed to research necessary certification and check in with us, we set the plan in motion with the vet’s agreement so that we could return to this same vet within 10 days of our travel, and

have the final German Annex II and US paperwork signed and dated by the vet (which has to be signed and dated within 10 days of travel).

Then, it would be off to ASPHIS, the USDA regulator of live imports, for final stamping and dating of the forms, also to be completed within 10 days of travel. The local USDA-APHIS office happens to be near. An appointment was scheduled within the 10 days, but you must plan for either a long trip to your nearest USDA- APHIS office in, say, your State capital, or you must send an expedited/express mail package to them with the forms and a pre-paid return express envelope.

When we got to the airport for our travel, which is SFO, an approved port of embarkation, we had Connor’s medical history and certificates, all the German and USDA paperwork, Connor’s place on the plane, and our plans for doggy comfort in order. We didn’t, in the end, need to show any of the paperwork to embark, simply showed the airline check-in crew the dog in his mesh kennel when we went through security and the gate. I was carrying a handheld microchip scanner, which could read all brands including the one in Connor, as Connor’s chip was not ISO compliant. When we got to Germany, we didn’t need to show any of the paperwork at German immigration and customs, didn’t use the scanner, nor did they even glance at our dog! After our stay in Germany, upon returning to the States, again immigration and customs officials didn’t bat an eye at us, nor the dog, nor did they ask for any paperwork!

Were we glad we had it all? YES! If you are planning to travel for any length of time, it will be worth the effort and time to follow through on all paperwork.

We happily carried our dog off the plane, and as soon as we could after customs, took him to potty on a pee-pad we’d prepared in the restroom and also gave him water with the small travel bottle we had brought along. We had brought treats, and vet-approved medications for several events such as anti-anxiety; I had thought we might give him ice cubes. We didn’t need any of these on the flight. I had slid in a small toy, and had lined the soft-sided crate on the bottom with a flat-board absorbent pad, which he didn’t soil, but did chew the tag.

In the end, he didn’t bark or whine, slept almost the entire time but for a bit of shifting, and it appeared as if he had simply passed a normal night with us. Iam sure he was happy to smell us, and to draw comfort to know his tribe was right next to him the whole flight. We breathed a sigh of relief when we got out of the airport: Connor happily found and sniffed the nearest curb post, as in any neighborhood at home.
