In the UK, there are over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests annually, but the survival rate is less than 1 in 10 (around 8.6% to 9.5%). Early CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival. The Resuscitation Council UK and British Heart Foundation are working to improve these statistics through initiatives like the OHCAO registry to better understand variations in survival rates and promote broader CPR training

With the recent data issued and advancement in technology surround the ability to offer improved CPR training, the Watkins Academy has started to purchases new CPR mannequins installed with the innovative QCPR technology. This works by using advanced wireless sensors embedded in a CPR training manikin to measure the performance of chest compressions and rescue ventilations, providing objective, real-time feedback to the learner and instructor

How QCPR Tech Works

Annual cardiac arrests: Over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the UK each year.

Survival rate: Less than one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest

Impact of early CPR: Early CPR combined with defibrillation can more than double a person's chances of survival.

Home-based arrests: Approximately 8 in 10 out-ofhospital cardiac arrests happen at home

Sensors: The manikin contains internal sensors that monitor key metrics of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) performance, including compression depth, rate, complete release, and ventilation volume.

Connectivity: This data is transmitted wirelessly, typically via Bluetooth Low Energy, to a connected device such as a smartphone, tablet, or a dedicated feedback device called the SkillGuide.

Real-time Feedback: An accompanying app (like the QCPR Learner or Instructor App) processes the data and provides immediate audio and visual feedback. This allows the learner to make instant adjustments to their technique during the training session.

Performance Metrics: The system offers detailed insights into the quality of CPR, allowing users to see areas for improvement. Specific feedback points include:

Compression Rate and Depth: Ensuring compressions are within the recommended 100-120 per minute at an adequate depth (approx. 2 inches for adults).

Full Chest Recoil: Highlighting if the chest is not allowed to fully re-expand after each compression.

Ventilation Volume: Measuring the amount of air delivered during rescue breaths.

By providing objective measurement and specific guidance, QCPR technology takes the guesswork out of instruction and helps learners improve the quality of their CPR performance, which is a critical factor in improving survival rates from cardiac arrest.

Every second counts in an emergency. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one of the most critical interventions a bystander can perform, yet it remains a skill that many people lack confidence in

One of the greatest benefits of the Laerdal CPR manikin is its realism. Designed to mimic the human body’s resistance, chest rise, and airway, it helps learners understand what effective compressions and ventilations actually feel like This tactile realism builds muscle memory - ensuring that when the pressure is on, trained responders can deliver high-quality CPR without hesitation.

Comments from our Academy TrainersRoy Lovelock & Mark Ferrett

Although our previous manikin were certainly useful practical tools, with visual oversight and advice from an instructor, we felt there was more we could do to give our first aiders accurate feedback that their technique was correct

What about the depth of compressions, allowing the chest to rise enough allowing the heart to refill with blood. How long were they off the chest whilst delivering breaths and were they delivering enough air to the lungs?

The integrated feedback technology in the Laerdal models we use allows us to connect the mannequins to an app, providing real time digital scoring. The app offers precise data on compression depth, rate, hand placement, and recoil It measures volume of breaths and time off the chest, providing scores in each area as well as tips for improvement Trainees can self-correct instantly, and instructors can track progress with objective metrics instead of guesswork.

We wanted them to leave the course with the knowledge, skill and importantly the confidence that if they ever need to put it into practice they are equipped to give their patient the best chance of recovery and survival

Investing in this training tool has transformed the CPR experience in our courses Its lifelike design and smart feedback systems are making a real difference for attendees

Watkins Academy are committed to helping reduce statistics for annual fatalities resulting from cardiac arrest.

We will be offering Saturday ½ day sessions throughout 2026 to Watkins employees and their family members, at no cost, to attend

The Level 3 Basic Life Saving CPR & AED Training - for adult learners, provides the knowledge and skills needed to carry out CPR and AED use on adults and children

NEW HAVS MONITORING WATCHES

Protecting You from Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome

HAVS is a group of conditions caused by prolonged exposure to vibration from hand-held tools such as grinders, sanders, impact wrenches, or chainsaws Over time, this exposure can damage nerves, blood vessels, muscles, and joints in the hand and arm.

The result?

Tingling or numb fingers

Loss of grip strength

“White finger” episodes where circulation shuts down Permanent disability if left unmanaged

What makes HAVS particularly insidious is that once damage sets in, it’s often irreversible.

Vibration intensive tools revolutionised construction, manufacturing, and maintenance, but early enthusiasm overshadowed long-term health consequences Today, HAVS is still one of the most commonly reported occupational ill health conditions, costing industries millions each year

In 2026, we will begin introducing HAVS monitoring watches for operatives who may be at risk of hand–arm vibration exposure

We will phase this in by issuing the watches to a selected group of operatives and sites This controlled rollout will allow us to gather feedback, understand how the devices perform in real working environments, and collect accurate data to shape the wider implementation

WHAT DO THE WATCHES DO?

Monitor your vibration exposure in real time

Warn you when you’re nearing safe limits

Help supervisors plan safer work schedules

Support better task rotation and rest breaks WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

Always wear your HAVS watch when using vibrating tools

Follow safe working practices and take breaks as advised

• Report any symptoms (tingling, numbness, pain, reduced strength) immediately

REMEMBER

HAVS can be prevented

These watches are here to keep you safe, healthy, and working comfortably

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

TRANSITIONINGFROM FFP3TOABEK1P3 RESPIRATORS

In many industrial and hazardous environments, respiratory protection is a vital component of workplace safety

Recently, a shift has been implemented in several workplaces and safety procedures the transition from FFP3 respirators to ABEK1P3 respirators While both offer high levels of protection, the switch reflects a strategic response to evolving exposure risks and regulatory requirements

This article explains the differences between the two types of respirators, the reasons behind the change, and what workersneedtoknowtoadapteffectively.

THEDIFFERENCES

FFP3

KeyFeatures

(Filtering Face Piece, class 3) respirators are part of the EN 149 standard used primarily in Europe They offer the highest level of filtrationamongdisposablemasksinthisclassification

Filtersatleast99%ofairborneparticles

Protects against solid and liquid aerosols

Commonly used in environments with fine dusts, such as construction, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare (eg, protectionagainstairborneviruses)

Limitations

Noprotectionagainstgasesorvapours

Primarily designed for particulate hazards

Usually disposable, though reusable versionsexist

ABEK1P3 a combined filter respirator that conforms to the EN 14387 standard for gas and combined filters. It offers both gas/vaporandparticulateprotection

KeyAdvantages

Provides comprehensive protection against a wide range of hazards: particulates, gases, andvapours

Reusablewithreplaceablefilters

Ideal for chemical handling, waste management, industrial manufacturing, andhazardousmaterial cleanups

BreakdownofABEK1P3:

A: Organic gases and vapoUrs (boiling point>65°C)

B: Inorganic gases and vapors (eg, chlorine, hydrogensulfide)

E: Acid gases and vapors (e.g., sulfur dioxide)

K: Ammonia and organic ammonia derivatives

1:Gasfilterclass1(lowcapacity)

P3:Highestlevelofparticulatefiltration (similartoFFP3 9995%)

WHY THE CHANGE?

Evolving Exposure Risks

Many modern workplaces face mixed hazards, not just dust or biological particles. Chemicals, solvent vapours, and acid gases may also be present risks that FFP3 masks are not designed to handle.

Regulatory Compliance

Safety audits and occupational health standards increasingly require protection based on actual exposure risks, which often extend beyond particulates alone. ABEK1P3 filters meet broader regulatory requirements for mixed exposures.

Increased Durability

Although ABEK1P3 respirators have a higher upfront cost, they are reusable and offer longer-term value in environments with frequent exposure to both particles and vapours.

Improved Worker Comfort

Many ABEK1P3 respirators come with enhanced face seals, adjustable straps, and better breathability under heavy load, which improves user compliance and protection.

CONCLUSION

CONSIDERATIONS

Training

Workers must be trained on: Proper donning and doffing

Filter replacement schedules

Storage and maintenance of reusable masks

Fit Testing

Proper fit is crucial. Fit testing ensures the respirator forms an effective seal on the user's face essential for both FFP3 and ABEK1P3 masks.

Hazard Assessment

A comprehensive review of the workplace environment should guide the switch. If gases or vapours are present, ABEK1P3 is often the more appropriate choice.

The move from FFP3 to ABEK1P3 respirators reflects a broader commitment to holistic worker protection in environments where multi-hazard exposure is present. While FFP3 masks remain appropriate in settings focused on particulate control (e.g., healthcare), ABEK1P3 respirators provide the added safeguard of gas and vapor filtration, making them the preferred choice in chemical or industrial workplaces

Employers should ensure a smooth transition by offering appropriate training, updating risk assessments, and ensuring all equipment meets the latest regulatory standards.

SOCIAL VALUE & CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Watkins continues to partner with EBP Kent, an organisation focused on involving employers in shaping the next generation of talent

In July, apprentices Kairo Anthony and Reece Da Costa visited Swanlea School in Whitechapel to speak with Year 11 students about their experiences Their session was very well received, with CYT sharing glowing feedback: “You were brilliant with the young people, and it was wonderful to see such a positive response from them. Thank you for encouraging our shyer students to network too – it is much appreciated.”

Later in October, Helen and Kairo took part in an apprentice Q&A session at Bishop Challoner Catholic School in Shadwell, giving students an honest look at what an apprenticeship involves and answering questions from Year 12s exploring their next steps and considering a future in construction.

Watkins continue to strengthen our community engagement and are proud long standing supporters of local rugby team Thanet Wanderers, serving as principal sponsors of their Mini and Junior Teams.

In 2025 alone, 1,038 children benefited from coaching across seven schools, three of which cater to pupils with special educational needs with girls making up a quarter of all participants

Since the start of our partnership, an impressive 2,904 young people have received rugby coaching in eleven schools throughout Thanet thanks to the Community Programme

HSE Reported Accidents 2024/2025

The Heinrich Safety Triangle above highlights the link between unsafe acts, minor incidents and major accidents, suggesting that for every 1 serious injury, there are 29 minor incidents and 300 near misses or unsafe acts This model shows that by tackling the high number of lower-level events, organisations can greatly reduce the chance of a major incident.

36 near miss reports have been made in 2025 via Watkins PowerApps.

Although an increase from the previous year, we aim to improve upon this in 2026, as this helps us reduce overall accidents and improve control measures
